‘The Shack’ takes award Story by Glenise Dreaver Last Friday night The Cloudy Bay Shack, Cloudy Bay winery's private guest house, received a New Zealand Architecture Award at the 2013 awards presentation ceremony in Auckland.

Ian Morden, Cloudy Bay Estate Director said that while The Cloudy Bay Shack had won the Commercial award "... in a way the star of the show is the world-class Marlborough landscape".

The building, which hosts both winery guests and showcase industry events, is on the site of the original winemaker's house, with a superb view. "And there's always been a tradition of hospitality here too. It's our way of continuing that."

The materials reflect the local landscape, with the use of pre-rusted steel and bare concrete, drawing on the tradition of the Kiwi bach he said.

Clifford Bay report delayed Transport Minister Ger ry Brownlee’s office has confirmed that there is a delay with the latest report on the viability of the proposed Clifford Bay ferry terminal replacement.

The report was due before the end of May, but a spokesman for his office said yesterday that a team from the Transport Ministry was still working on it, with

the help of independent experts.

“They are working through the complexities of it and under some pressure,” said Press Secretary Nick Bryant.

“They know we would like it to be sooner, but we would rather have it done thoroughly than quickly.”

He could give no new timeline at this stage.

Both Tim and Paul were born in New Zealand and so had an innate sensitivity to the local landscape and how the building should sit within it, said Ian. The final costs were "a lot less than you'd think," Ian said, adding that the

judges were very complimentary about the value for money achieved.

They were also complimentary about what they described as "an exquisitely sited and thoughtfully planned building” that complemented the high standards of an iconic New Zealand winery.

Singing debut for dancer

Nina McCollum will be performing in ‘Stars in Your Eyes’ as Kate Bush.

Story and photo by Kat Duggan Blenheim dance teacher, Nina McCollum, will be swapping her dancing shoes for a microphone next week, to make her singing debut.

Nina went to the Spring Creek Lions and Districts ‘Stars In Your Eyes’ show last year, and thought it would be a good way to kick off her own singing career.

“I’ve always been a dancer in other musical productions, and singing is something I’d like to get into.

“I went to watch the show last year and thought ‘Oh I’d really like to do that,’ a friend of mine said I’d make a great Kate Bush, so I’ve decided to perform as her.”

Kate Bush is an English singer-songwriter, musician and record producer, and one of the United Kingdom’s most successful solo female

performers of the past 35 years.

Nina, who teaches ballet at Marlborough Dance Centre, will be competing against nine other acts in the show, which will be held next Thursday and Friday nights.

Any prize money had to be donated to a charity of the singer’s choice, and Nina has chosen Riding for the Disabled Marlborough.

The Spring Creek Lions and Districts Stars In Your Eyes show will be held at the Marlborough Convention Centre and will be the show’s sixth year.

To date it has raised around $25,000 for the community, said co-ordinator Robyn Simmons.

“It’s a competition but more of a charity event. Contestants always have fun while representing their chosen charities.”

Judging the show are judges Duncan McKenzie, Kevin Moseley and guest judge Jackie Clarke.

Tickets for ‘Stars In Your Eyes’ can be purchased from Harcourts and cost $40 for the preview night on June 6 and $110 for the awards dinner on June 7.

Pile driving begins for the ASB Civic Theatre The new ASB Civic Theatre project is moving ahead with the green light given for work to begin on the theatre foundations.

The results of three test piles installed last week have cleared the way for workers to begin putting down the 91 steel screw piles which will secure the theatre site.

Project manager Tim Smit said Smithcrane and Construction Ltd, working with Robinson Construction, would install the hollow steel piles, varying in diameter between 219mm and 340mm.

The screws will be screwed down 17m below ground level, a minimum of two metres into the gravel layer encountered at that depth.

Mr Smit said the piles would then be filled with concrete and tied with reinforcing bars into the building’s foundation beams.

Weather permitting; the job should be finished in four to five weeks.

“We are thrilled to have reached this milestone. The public has been patiently watching the activity all around the site but from now on they will be able to see some real progress and, over the next two years, the theatre literally growing out of the ground,” Mr Smit said.

Once the piles are in, the next stage of the project will be the theatre basement.

Before the last of the piles are installed, the basement excavation will be completed to allow the basement construction to begin straight away.

Mr Smit said the basement would go down approximately two and a half metres below the existing ground level, and would house the trap floor under the stage, the orchestra pit lift and the dressing rooms and toilets.

Fall from truck A forty-year-old Canterbury man was admitted to Wairau Hospital yesterday with serious hip and leg injuries after he fell from the top deck of a car haulage truck on the Waitohi wharf.

The call came to St John at 5.30pm and two ambulances and three paramedics attended.

By Kat Duggan Last Friday, Mary handed over 29 kits to CYF site manager, Kaye MacDonald, after being down to one pack at the start of this month (The Sun, May 1 pg 3).

The Sun Office has had a container for the public to donate basic necessities for foster kids, for the past month, which will now be passed on to Marlborough’s foster children.

“For us we just want to say a big thank you to all of the people who have supported and donated to the cause, and a big thank you to Mary for all the time and effort she puts in.

“She’s a grandmother, and she’s caring for three foster children, and going over and above that to care for other children,” Ms MacDonald said.

Mary has been collecting new items including pyjamas, underwear, socks, toiletries, toys, and books for foster kids aged 0-18,and said the kits could not have been put together without the help of people in the community.

“I didn’t realise how generous the people in Marlborough could be.

“Thank you to all of the people who have donated, and a special thank you

to Pams second hand shop, who took me shopping with $300 for the kits.”

Ms MacDonald said the kits, which would go quickly to Marlborough families who are in desperate need of the necessities.

“They will be gone in the next fortnight, we will be getting them out to children coming into care, but also families who are really vulnerable,” she said.

Innovation to protect the Sounds

New Zealand King Salmon has recently invested over a million dollars in eco-friendly equipment to clean the outer netting which keeps predators out of its salmon farms.

The new net cleaning technology uses high pressure water jets to remove any weed, shellfish, and other organisms from the nets.

Previously the company followed the practice of keeping predator nets clean with a copper-based product, and monitored copper levels on the seabed using Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC) guidelines.

The inner fish production nets have always been maintained using eco-friendly methods.

Woodbourne pig and deer hunt Story by Kat Duggan The Woodbourne Tavern is hosting its Pig and Deer Hunt for 2013 this Weekend.

This is the first time in four years this event has been run and is back by popular demand from locals.

The hunt will run from Friday until Sunday, and is open to all ages, with each age group having different hunting categories.

Kids’ entry is free, and prizes will be given to the first, second and third heaviest entries of hare, rabbit, and possum; teenagers aged 13-15 have a $30 entry fee, with prizes given to first, second and third heaviest pig and goat.

The open 16 years and over age group have a $40 entry fee, and prizes go to the first, second and third

heaviest pig and deer entries.

The weigh in will run from 2pm until 3.30pm on Sunday June 2, which will be a great family day out, with the prize giving starting at 4.30pm, and live music from local band the Chilli Dogs from 7pm.

The Renwick Marching Club will have a food stall on site, while the Department of Conservation will be available to give hunters information on pest eradication.

There will be heaps of cash prizes and giveaways and the first 50 entries will receive a ‘Woody Hunting T Shirt.’

Children must fill in an entry form, which will get them a good bag upon weigh-in.

The local Renwick Volunteer Fire Brigade will be there to help with crowd control and parking.

Chlorine in Witherlea water Residents of Witherlea may have noticed chlorine in their water during the last couple of days.

Council maintenance staff cleaned out the Wither Reservoir last Friday, including a thorough wash of its floor and lower wall surfaces.

A chlorine-based disinfectant was left on the surfaces for a couple of hours before a rinsing with water that was then flushed out to waste, not reticulated into the water supply.

The reservoir was refilled with fresh water but some people have reported a faint chlorine odour.

Council operations and maintenance engineer Steve Rooney is surprised that there is any residual odour but it won’t last long.

He said the chlorination was a precaution because staff had been moving around inside the reservoir.

“We can’t take any risk of accidentally transferring bacteria into the tanks.”

Mr Rooney said any chlorine traces would be barely detectable by Tuesday.

Only properties south of Hospital Road get their water from the Wither Reservoir.

Dear Ed, I read a story in Wednesday's paper (The Sun, May 22, p8), commenting on minimum hourly pay rates in New Zealand.

Australia was quoted as $20.00 an hour.

Sorry, minimum rate is $15.96 an hour for adults in Australia.

Of course casual rates are higher.

Dependent on whether one is doing a trainee ship or not rates for 16-20 year-olds are a lot lower.

However, my wife is an R.N.Midwife Australian, works at John Flynn Private Hospital, 320 beds on the Gold Coast.

She has been saying New Zealand qualified midwives have been coming to Australia in droves, and a fair few have started at John Flynn working with her.

"Are there any left over in New Zealand?" She asks me.

In the past i have looked at N.Z. hourly rates for nurses and there is a fair difference, 20 per cent actual, plus exchange rate, which is a lot of money

if you are a Single Mum working, whom nurses a lot of the time are.

Ex hubbies probably cannot stand the hours nurses do, my wife works nine nights, plus one afternoon a fortnight, mainly nine hour shifts, but can get called in as happened last Wednesday, 13 hr shift, 8pm start, got home 9am next day.

Happens a few times a year.

I am a diesel fitter, retired, came over here for six months, finished up in the coal fields for 11 years.

Big money can be made if you get into the right areas, tradesman working for sub contractors on major sites $80,000-$110,000 a year, four days on, four off, 12 hour shifts, working directly for BHP, as I did many years ago. $120,000-$130,000 a year these days, plus subsidized accommodation on fly in fly out.

Free buses, and in some instances free flights to the job.

Fantastic opportunities if employees can get on to them and can handle the isolation.

We owe it to our grandchildren Dear Ed, Much has been made recently re climate change in "letters to the Editor" and while you may not be 100 per cent swayed by either argument, the concensus of both sides seems that the climate is changing, but is it man made (for) or just a blip of nature (against).

But one thing that is being positively overlooked is that we inherit the Earth from the next generation - I would prefer to say our grandchildren - and it is up to us to return it in either better condition or at least the same condition as when they lent it to us.

Now the cost of doing this is marginal to say the least. Current estimates are around $180/person/ annum. Now for that small amount, around about one latte a week, I'm happy to pay the insurance. If the (against) are right well so be it, but if the (for) are right then wow. I don't think anyone would want to have to answer to their grandchildren, who will be the ones to suffer the consequences of our inaction, and have to say well I didn't really believe it was a problem, so for the sake of a latte a week I did nothing. Do you?

National Govt Worse!

Dear Ed I read, with a wry smile, Tim Leslie's letter defending the government. I assume Tim is a paid up member of National although he no longer holds a position. It shows.

This National Government is arrogant, ignorant of constituents, dictatorial and ruthless. The sale of assets is a good example. They don't belong to Key, Joyce or any other cabinet member. They belong to the public. Why didn't government hold a referendum and ask the owners, i.e. public?

On the ETS, smacking and other issues, government has been deaf. Referendums? No not interested in public's view! It's latest RMA Reform Bill is a fast track for its big business friends. So was the EPA process that allowed King Salmon to trample over council's community-led planning scheme.

As for money deficits, since 1984 and Rogernomics, successive National and Labour governments have put NZ further in debt with trading deficits year after year under the free market ideology.

Music and diesel: two life passions Ross Akerblom has two life passions; music and diesel. “Let’s face it; life would be pretty dull without music,” he told Sun reporter, Kat Duggan on Friday.

“Music, and diesel, I can’t get away from that either. Once it’s in your blood you can’t get away from it, driving trucks and machinery is what life’s all about for me.”

I guess this is why neither Gill’s Construction nor the Blenheim Country Music Club can get rid of him.

You could call Ross a life member of both organisations, having been at the music club for 32 years, and with Gills not many less, coming up 28 years.

“I retired from Gill’s Construction four years ago after 26 years of driving for them, and had 18 months off, then they were short of workers, so I went back, and have been back two years.”

Ross’ job at Gill’s Construction is now part time however, giving him more time to focus on his musical passion.

A life member of the Blenheim Country Music Club for 17 years, Ross was also president for three years, and will be standing for the role again this year.

He is a self-taught bass guitar and keyboard player, as well as a vocalist.

“I was taught the bagpipes when I was only six or seven, and at that stage I was the youngest bagpipe player in the Blenheim Pipe Band.

“I still remember playing at the A&P show in 1952, with the marching band amongst all these adults, which was pretty special. I’ll never forget that.”

“I suppose really that taught me the basic things about music and what to listen for, to know where you were with your music, I can’t sight read it,” he said.

Ross and his wife Pam, who is also a life member of the club, have always been heavily involved with music, only stopping for a short time while their two sons were growing up.

‘I don’t know what we would’ve done without our music; it’s been our life for so long,” Pam said, “I might have had to take up sport or something stupid,” Ross added with a laugh.

Ross’ music has seen him star in a number of bands, including Southbound, of which he is still a member, and has also seen him move into mixing and recording music.

His sound work saw the pair own a sound business for nine years, where Ross would provide and set up sound equipment for acts coming through town,

including that of Terry Smith, an American singer/ songwriter who has written songs for global country singing success, Johnny Cash.

Ross will be 70 next year, and while he is slowing down with his diesel passion, he has no plans to give up his music anytime soon.

“Life’s been pretty good to us really.

“I’ll keep doing it for as long as I can, physically.

As long as the fingers don’t seize up and stuff up and my ears still work, so I can hear what’s going on,” he said.

Local attitudes to alcohol being examined The Marlborough District Council today closed an anonymous survey designed to help the council to develop local alcohol policies.

A law change late last year enabled local authorities to develop their own alcohol policies.

Councillor John Leggett said this was an opportune time for Marlborough to consider whether the region has the balance right on alcohol availability and consumption.

The Council conducted a random survey of 2000 residents to get their views on the availability of alcohol here, which was to be completed by today.

Councillor Leggett, who chairs the local liquor licensing sub-committee, said the

feedback would help the council consider the approach it should take in planning terms.

“For example, do we as a council decide to try and encourage bars, restaurants and cafes to establish within a single precinct as a good way to help manage drinking behaviour?” he asked.

The Marlborough Alcohol Advisory Committee, made up of representatives from Council, the health sector, police, ACC, Hospitality NZ and district councillors, commissioned a report on the current situation in Marlborough which will help it to prepare the local alcohol policy as well as an alcohol harm reduction strategy.

Consultation with the hospitality sector

and those in the liquor industry as well as health and social services will be held in the coming weeks.

“Licensed premises make a significant contribution to our local economy. For example, pubs and bars alone provide just over two hundred jobs – and that doesn’t count the restaurants and wineries. But we need to know whether any alcohol problems here can be related to the operation of these venues or whether the cause is elsewhere,” Mr Leggett said.

Information from the surveys would help guide the drafting of a local alcohol policy, and there would be a chance for public submissions on the policy before it is finalised.

Mid-Winter swim On Sunday June 23, the annual More FM Mid-Winter Swim with Cuddon will be held on the Picton foreshore at 1pm, with the prizegiving to follow.

The event always attacts a big crowd of participants in fancy dress and equally keen spectators.

Once again, the major prize of a Heat Pump from Cuddon is “up for grabs” plus many spot prizes from Marlborough businesses.

Picton Primary School will be fundraising with hot food and drinks and the Rarangi Surf Life Savers and St John’s Ambulance will be on site to ensure everyone’s safety.

Brancott Estate will supply hot water to be sprayed by the Rural Fire Service for swimmers after their chilly dip.

Registrations start at noon and close at 12.55pm.

Training run A Marlborough Harriers pack training run or walk will leave from the clubrooms at Oliver Park on the corner of Weld and Cleghorn streets at 6.pm on Thursday May 30. Reflector gear is compulsory.

Joggers and walkers, regardless of ability, are welcome.

Young sailor one to watch Story and photo by Kat Duggan Young Queen Charlotte Yacht Club sailor, Oliver Cowley is one to watch after he recently took out the optimist class of the All Japan International Friendship Regatta.

The 12-year-old has been sailing for just two years, but won the competition, sailing against about 30 other sailors, from Japan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand and New Zealand.

Oliver said he was excited about his achievement, which he had not expected, as he was competing against some tough competition.

“The other sailor I went with [Tom FyfeAuckland], was third best in New Zealand and fourth overall in the Nationals this year and I came 37th,” Oliver said.

After Tom bet Oliver by 33 places at the nationals, the pair were neck and neck at the Japan regatta, with Oliver just beating him at the finish.

Not only did he take the Japan Regatta title from Tom, who came second, he also bet Japan’s best optimist sailor, who, like Tom will be competing in the Optimist World Championships at Lake Garda, Italy, in July.

The New Zealand team of three dominated the competition, with Oliver and Tom coming first and second in the optimist class respectively, and Wellington’s George Gautrey taking out the Laser 4.7 class, after winning all of his races.

The team also took home a trophy for second rank in the team race.

Oliver’s 37th placing in the nationals, the 26th New Zealander, also won him the title of ‘best sailor for their first nationals’.

He said he hoped to continue sailing, and possibly make it a profession one day.

Smashed ‘Em Bro smashes through Last Thursday evening the popular Triples Tournament was held to end the season of Marlborough Volleyball’s Fairweathers’ Senior League at Stadium 2000.

Thirty six teams competed in six grades.

With three players each side, the play was fast and furious.

Isolate Recipients of the Most Valuable Player awards were: President’s Grade; Woody Flyers’ Joel Wiapo for his ability to combine well with other teammembers and for his consistent and great hard hitting at the net.

C Grade; Smashed ‘Em Bro’s Tu Daunivavana for all round great play. Tu was told he has had a fantastic term with great serving and consistent setting, blocking and hitting.

Mixed Grade; The A-Team’s Georgia Walker for great serving, setting and supporting her team.

Social Grade; Motley Crew’s Rick Alderlieste for consistent all round great play and a particularly good karate kick hit.

The Fair Play Team of the Week was awarded to Social Grade’s The Newbies.

Players now take a four-week break and the winter season commences on June 20.

Teams are reminded to register for the new season prior to Friday June 14.

Picton Dam run On Saturday June 1 at 2pm, Marlborough Harriers will be doing the Dam run, in the first instance the 45-minute run to the Reservoir dam from Nelson Square in Picton.

There is also a run to both dams and return, taking approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Further distances are available on the day. Everyone is welcome to participate and there is also a children’s run.

Don’t forget to bring a plate to share for afternoon tea.

MBC First XV The Marlborough Boys College First XV had another successful game on the weekend, taking down Timaru Boys High School 35-21.

The win was a good achievement for MBC, with coach Gray Cornelius previously telling The Sun that Timaru Boys would be a challenge for the home team. MBC’s next challenge will be tomorrow when, they face Nelson College in Nelson.

Shield again stays Marlborough Harriers Club retained the interclub Brooklyn Shield for the eleventh consecutive year last Saturday.Twenty five members lined up in the competition at Taylor Dam, along with visiting Waimea athletes Craig Harford, Fran Kerse, Maren Harford and Heather Eades.

Of the 12 grades, contested Marlborough won nine and Waimea three.

Marlborough also won the Brooklyn Trophy awarded for the Senior Men’s team competition and the teams competition Charlie Sturrock Cup for Boys 12 and under.

Waimea, however, deservedly won Don Pederson Cup for the top Senior Womens team. In a closely fought race, Waimea’s Fran Kerse took line honours from local runner Kiri Johnson.

Fran’s Waimea team-mate Maren Harford finished third and secured the silverware last won by the visitors in 2008.

On Saturday the Blenheim Pigeon Club held its second to last race of the 2013 young bird season. Eighty five birds were released at Timaru into clear calm conditions at 8.30am.

The first bird arrived home at 1.43.34pm.

Flock Race results were: 1. A. Cooper 1.43.34pm Velocity 1193.923mpm, and 2013 Young Bird Champ, 2.

Morrins Hollow 1116.712mpm, 3.

S. Morrison 1116.599mpm,4 C. Kirkwood 1115.707mpm, 5. Dredge Family 1110.450mpm, 6. Tumbledown 1002.409mpm.

This race was the third leg of the Triple Crown race which was won by Morrins Hollow. There were no other flyers with eligible birds.
