International Sauvignon Blanc day

By Kat Duggan Being one of the first wine regions in the world to see in the day, Marlborough will be kicking off International Sauvignon Blanc Day today.

Wine Marlborough Ltd. is hosting an informal tasting for local wine producers, to celebrate the variety, and get the ball rolling on the global social media wine tasting.

“It’s just a really informal tasting, a chance to get local wineries together, to bring their own wine and to have a taste,” said marketing and communications coordinator, Emily Hope.

Today marks the fourth annual International Sauvignon Blanc Day, an online initiative which started in California, at St Supery Winery.

The day acts to promote Sauvignon Blanc locally, nationally and internationally.

School offers $50K prize Grovetown School is holding a fishing and hunting competition this weekend, with a chance for somebody to win $50,000.

Competition organiser, Sandy Large, said any adult entered in the hunting or fishing section of competition, ‘Does it Weigh $50k?’, has the opportunity to win the big prize.

“One person is drawn out of all the adult entries, and the weight of their catch will generate the number of the envelope they open. The envelope will either say yes you’ve won $50K, or no, you’ve won the consolation prize.”

The consolation prize is a Ridge Air helicopter flight, worth $1300.

The weigh-in will take place on Sunday, May 19, from 1pm until 3pm, and the main prize giving will be at 4pm.

While waiting for the prize-giving, the public can participate in a range of activities hosted at the school, including snail races, chocolate wheel, obstacle courses, and tugo-war, as well as food and spot prizes.

The MC for the day will be Geoff Thomas, from “TV3’s Outdoors with Geoff,” who is flying down from Auckland for the event.

All entries must be caught between 6am Friday May 17, and 3pm Sunday May 19.

Looking forward to the competition this weekend is: (back L-R), Connor Bruce, Josh Fuller, Sam Neal, Emma Fuller, Maddie Large, front left, Finn Bruce, Millie Large and Jacob Large.

Entry will be free for children under 5, $5 for ages 6-9 years, $10 for ages 10-17 years, and $30 per adult 18 years and over.

All proceeds made in the competition will

be going towards repairs of the school pool, which has been on the site since the 1940’s, and is where the kids do their swimming lessons.

Paying it forward in coffee

This is what local barista, Josh McKay is hoping to make happen from his coffee cart in the Forum.

Owner of the Boost Coffee Kart, Josh is hoping to introduce Blenheim to the idea of the suspended coffee, a concept which includes paying for a coffee, but not taking it, which can then be given to somebody who may not be able to afford their own.

Josh, who heard about the concept taking off in Wellington, thought the idea was a good way of looking after the wider community.

“Sometimes there are people that maybe would like a coffee, but they just don’t have it in their budget to afford one. It would be nice for them to have something that we just take for granted,” he said.

The onset of winter spurred Josh into action, and he sold his first suspended coffee on Monday this week to local man Adam Jasinski.

“I heard about it, it’s quite popular in some of the countries in Europe and I hadn’t heard of it happening much here so I thought it would be a good idea to start it with Josh,” Mr Jasinski said.

Since the first Suspended Coffee was sold, the concept has already lifted off in Blenheim, with Ritual Cafe also adopting the idea.

Josh was positive that Marlburians would take to the idea of paying it forward, saying it was a small thing people could do to help others out, especially in the cold winter months, adding that you never know when you might need a free hot drink yourself.

"I just think it’s cool, and it’s different, and makes me feel like a part of the wider community, like you’re doing something. It’s hard, especially when you’ve got a young family, to get involved, and I feel bad that I should be doing more, but I just think this is one of those little easy things that you can do which Josh McKay makes us all whanau.”

Johnny Cash to ‘star’ in your eyes Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk More FM host Glenn Kirby said he had three goals to achieve this year.

One of them was to perform onstage in the Spring Creek Lions and Districts Stars In Your Eyes show June 6 and 7.

L a st yea r Glen n helped to MC the show but this year he will be taking to the stage as music legend Johnny Cash.

Performing is nothing out of his comfort zone as Glenn has been playing guitar, singing and writing songs for several years.

He has performed live in London and is currently in a band.

When impersonating a musician some people might wear similar clothing and even wear a wig, but in Glenn’s case he is growing his hair and even colouring it black to appear as close to character as possible.

Each of the contestants are asked to nominate a local charity who will receive any prize money that is won.

Glenn’s chosen charity is the Marlborough Parents Centre.

“My wife and I found the Parent Centre really helpful when we had our first child. They provide really important information about birth and what to do when the baby is born, because let’s face it, first time parents don’t really know what’s going on,” he laughed.

Tickets for the Stars In Your Eyes show being held at the Marlborough Convention Centre are on sale at Harcourts and cost $40 for the preview night on June 6 and $110 for the awards dinner on June 7.

Shellfish ban lifted The Queen Charlotte Sound and Tory Channel shellfish ban has been lifted. Two consecutive shellfish tests taken in the areas have shown the levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) toxin in shellfish has returned to a safe level.

The shellfish ban in the area had been in place since March 25, 2013.

Bail denied The man charged with breaking into a house and sexually assaulting two 16-year-old Picton girls on March 31 has been named as Penisimani Taakimoeaka.

Taakimoeaka appeared in the Blenheim District Court on Monday, where his application for electronically monitored bail was denied, and he has been remanded in custody to reappear on May 29.

He has denied the charges.

New Zealand’s Ora King salmon has been judged as ‘remarkable’ at the iTQi Superior Taste Awards in Belgium. The brand has been developed specifically for fine dining by New Zealand King Salmon and was launched last year. Ora King Fresh Whole Salmon achieved two stars in the awards and an overall mark of 83.1 per cent.

Parents gain skills to help kids learn

Kalara Vika Ragasau, Emele Ragasau and Sela Manoa just graduated from the Computers in Homes course.

By Kat Duggan Twenty four families graduated from a ‘Computers in Homes’ programme on Wednesday, hosted by Bohally Intermediate School.

The course was run by Bohally librarian, Cathy-Ann Scoon, and tagata Pasifika cultural and programme advisor, Lapu Oliver, and was a chance for parents of school-aged children to learn how to use computers, and keep up with their child’s learning.

“It has been proven that Pasifika children are under achieving, this is our endeavour to break that cycle, by teaching and learning together with our children online,” said Mrs Lapu.

Mrs Scoon said the 10 week course taught the families basic skills, starting at how to turn the computer on, through to using tools like Google Maps.

The course also provides families with a recycled computer to have at home, which is checked

and set up by a technical support person, as well as six months internet connection where possible, providing the tools needed by families to keep learning.

Kalara Vika Ragasau, who graduated the course on Wednesday night, said the skills she learnt had been very helpful, and she would definitely use them at home.

“It’s a privilege to get all this equipment and learning. Back at home, we think when you’re old that’s it, but here we learn that the education and learning continues.”

Mrs Oliver said the course also helped the families to interact with the community.

“Computers help them to join in the community, they need to grow with their children online, and mentor and monitor them online,” she said.

In order to graduate from the course, the students had to pass at least 80% of the course work.

Visit re-unites old friends

By Belinda Jackson Imagine your surprise if a car you had bought and sold several decades ago in a different part of the country, suddenly turned up on your doorstep here in Blenheim.

That’s exactly what happened to William Roundhill.

William took his grandson to Omaka Classic Cars one day and while admiring the extensive range of Jaguars, spotted a familiar number plate – AW1204 on a 1960 Mark IX. He did a bit of a double-take as the car had clearly been lovingly restored and was also no longer the pale grey it once was, but a darker, two-tone grey.

William knew there was only way to tell.

Many years prior, a young lad working in a garage had unfortunately stuck a jack under the sump to lift the two-tonne car.

Needless to say this crushed the sump and though William had tried to beat it back into shape, he knew that if this was the same vehicle, it would likely still have the dented sump.

He checked and it did.

The car was originally brought to New Zealand by an immigrant farmer who had settled in Northland in 1964.

It travelled as deck cargo and as a consequence got quite a bit of rust.

William bought the car in early 1965 from Farmers Co-Op Car Dealers in Whangerei. He had wanted to by a new Valiant, but didn’t have the overseas funds required.

He spotted the Jaguar which was on offer for the same amount of money, but as it second-hand, he didn’t need overseas funds to purchase it.

The family took it for a test drive and immediately fell in love – the kids particularly admired the tray tables that folded down in the back!

After driving it home, William bumped into his mate who unbeknown to him, had been looking at the car and wanted to purchase it himself – he was none too pleased to see William with it!

William had always wanted to be a farmer, so the family relocated to Inangahua on the West Coast to take advantage of the affordable land prices.

The earthquake that struck the area in1968 saw the car buried up to the axels in the shingle floor of the garage and it had to be pulled out with a tractor.

Another mishap with the car was during a drive through the recently opened Haast Pass.

Workers flagged William through even though they were clearly working on a recent slip.

Rocks were tumbling down and a large one hit the bonnet, only just in front of the windscreen. William was not happy but got little sympathy from the road workers!

In the late 1970’s with rather a long list of things that needed attending to and the associated expense, the car was ‘put out to pasture’ quite literally, sitting in a field on the farm for some years.

In the early ‘80s it was bought by someone in Christchurch who intended to fully restore it before it was bought by Ron Stewart and joined the collection at Omaka Classic Cars.

So taking the story full circle, William retired to Blenheim in 2000 and then a few months ago, visited Omaka Classic Cars. William said, “I called out to my wife, “I think I’ve found our old car!” and sure enough it was. I am delighted to see it looking so beautiful and we’re looking forward to using it for my Grandson’s wedding in October”.

Mighty mandarin A vitamin rich fruit favoured by children for its easy peeling skin, the mandarin is ripe in New Zealand from around May to July, and imported all year round.

This juicy little fruit is called both a tangerine and mandarin, a reflection of its interesting past.

Belonging to the citrus family, it grew in China a very long time ago and was so highly regarded that it was named after the officials of the Imperial Court,

the mandarins.

Its popularity was so great that it was eventually imported into Europe. It was there the mandarin was called by its second name, tangerine.

The mandarin skin is a soft and glossy orange colour and is easily peeled from its flesh. Mandarins are available both seeded and seedless.

Interesting Facts • Two small mandarins will supply 35% of the daily recommended allowance of Vitamin C • Low in kilojoules • Eaten raw mandarins are one of the important cleansing fruits • Mandarins are sometimes crossed with grapefruit to produce tangelos.

• They have about 8g of natural sugars per 100g, making it sweetly delicious

Tips

May gardening tips • Trees, flowers and roses need preparation ahead of winter • Prepare new beds for roses by adding compost and Organic Palletised Fertiliser.

Choose an open area away from trees and shrubs that receive at least five hours of full sun a day. A north or north-west facing position is ideal. If you would like peace of mind, place your rose order in advance.

How mandarins are grown and harvested

• Cut back Geraniums, Michaelmas, Daisies, Phlox and other Perennials that have finished flowering.

If ever there was a generous tree, it is the Mandarin. Even when it is still quite small, it smothers itself in fruit and is therefore well worth growing.

Like all citrus varieties, it likes a well-drained, friable, slightly acid soil and full sun. Initial protection from wind in the summer months will help it to become established.† Mandarins can be harvested in late autumn and winter by carefully picking them to avoid bruising and damage to their skins.

Next time you pick or purchase mandarins, choose ones which are glossy and heavy for their size. This is a good indication they have a good juice content.

The HOB Boar Slaying super comp For the past three years organizers of the HOB Boar Slaying Super Comp have said the annual event had grown in numbers each year.

Now with a new location and an exciting new format, this competition looks set to be the biggest yet.

Hunters will set out in search of their prized boar on Friday, July 19, Saturday will be a 70’s and 80’s fancy dress cabaret night and

on Sunday hunters will bring their pigs in for weighing at the Giesen Sports and Events Centre.

The large grounds has enabled Sunday to become much more than a weigh-in, it will be a winter festival for the whole family with entertainment, food, a bouncy castle and stalls showcasing everything from jewellery and art through to all things hunting.

“Previous competitions have been hugely successful but this year we wanted to make it a win-

ter festival with something for everyone,” says organizers Matt and Lisa Willis.

“By hosting it at the Giesen Centre we are hoping to triple the number of people attending,” Lisa says.

From its beginnings the event took the title of being New Zealand’s largest pig hunting competition, something Matt and Lisa are extremely proud of.

But the anticipation is only just starting to build as the couple begin to finalise details including the popular ‘major spot prize’ of a truck which is given away on

Marlborough students put together Te Papa exhibition

By Kat Duggan Te Papa came to Blenheim this week, to teach primary school students the ins and outs of putting together an exhibition.

Students from Springlands, Witherlea, and Linkwater Schools had the opportunity to put together their very own exhibition, as part of the ‘Wonder Box’ programme.

Dash, travelled to Blenheim for the week, working with all three schools on the Nature Space Discovery Outreach programme, which is based on the various planning stages needed to build an exhibition and share the stories behind them.

“The idea is teaching them what it takes to put an exhibition together,” Mrs Dash said.

The students spent the week collecting items, and putting together their mini exhibitions,

and would be presenting them today.

The top ten exhibitions from each school would then be displayed at Te Papa for three months, a way of engaging communities which don’t have regular access to the museum.

Mrs Dash said the Wonder Boxes which were not selected for display at Te Papa, would also have a place at the museum, in a folder which would accompany the others.

Event organisers would like to invite the public to come along and enjoy the event, to experience ploughing through the decades, with a vintage section also taking place, consisting of both vintage tractors and ploughs.

The competition will be held on both Saturday May 18, and Sunday May 19 from 11am until 3pm Entry will be by gold coin donation.

The hosts, the Jordan family property, is located on Jacksons Road, Woodbourne, between Middle and Old Renwick Roads.

Two training camps are planned for the squad in Mt Maunganui this month which has drawn comment that it will be disruptive to the Super rugby franchises most affected.

What would those who criticise the squad and its disruption of Super rugby prefer?

The Blues to have a win, or for the All Blacks to prepare well and beat France?

I would much prefer the latter and I expect most in this country are of the same opinion.

Fortunately, test rugby is what matters still in New Zealand, not

the requirements of franchises.

Who would want the situation developing, as has happened occasionally in the northern hemisphere, where clubs dictate to the national body whether their players are available for test duties or not.

On June 2 the All Blacks squad will be pruned back to 30 players who will prepare for a three test series against France which begins on June 8 at Eden Park.

Of greater concern for New Zealand rugby at the moment, if you believe Chiefs coach, Dave Rennie, is the exodus of second tier players overseas.

The Chiefs have been struggling to plug the gap left by the injured Richard Kahui.

Money is the issue here – there’s not enough to keep the players in the country and realistically it is a situation that will continue, bar some sort of divine intervention.

The former All Black halfback Justin Marshall made some interesting comments in a column this week in which he said the skills levels of modern players have risen significantly and are far above players of the past.

He praised the giant Chiefs lock Brodie Retallick for his back-like artistry. If my memory serves me right I think a guy named Colin Meads used to be rather adept in this department in dim, dark days long ago.

have fitness and skill levels in most areas that are well above those of the amateur era.

Yet if you watch a match these days, how many backs do you see who can drop kick and punt strongly with either foot?

And there still appears to be a lot of basic errors being made and non-sensical kicking going on in Super rugby.

America's Cup to go ahead The America's Cup will go on as planned after the death of a sailor during a training run last week on San Francisco Bay, officials have said.

America's Cup officials made the announcement at a news conference in San Francisco. The officials also said they expected all four entrants to compete, including Artemis Racing.

Howlett retires The All Blacks’ record try scorer Doug Howlett has announced his retirement from professional rugby with immediate effect. Howlett, who scored an impressive 49 tries in 62 tests for New Zealand, had been struggling with a shoulder injury since March after injuring it in action for Irish giants Munster in a domestic game against Glasgow.

MBC tackling pool one

By Kat Duggan NZ King Salmon Marlborough Boys’ College first XV (MBC) is starting with one goal for the season, which is to make the top four teams of pool one.

Coach Gray Cornelius said the 2013 team was strong, and was working on consistency to tackle their first goal for the Press Cup Crusaders secondary

schools competition.

“We have got a strong team, we’ve got quite a few returning from last year,” Cornelius said.

“The big thing for us is consistency, the game against Ashburton wasn’t so good, whereas the one against Roncalli was good, so we’ve sort of gotta string two or three good games together.”

Rugby League here in Marlbrough Marlborough’s only rugby league team, playing in the Tasman Rugby League competition, Wairau Taniwha, will be playing against the Richmond Rabbits at Oliver Park tomorrow at 2.30pm. Head down and support the boys.

Of the two games already played, MBC has won both games, beating Ashburton College 31-20 in their first game on May 4, and last weekend taking down Timaru’s Roncalli College 41-20, gaining a bonus point in each game.

With another five teams to face during pool one, Cornelius thought the real tester would

come when the boys play both Nelson Boys, and Timaru Boys.

“I think after those two games we’ll have a good indicator of where we’re at, cause they’re known to be good sides.”

MBC would be playing Lincoln High School in Lincoln this weekend, with Timaru next week, and Nelson College the following week.
