More than 1500 people grooved, relaxed, and indulged their way through the seventh annual Classic Hits Winery Tour at Villa Maria Estate on Sunday evening.

One of them was Joan Blackmore, who, with 87 years under her belt, knows a good opportunity for enjoyment when she sees one.

A spot in the sunshine, with a rug, seat and picnic in tow, the Blenheim grandmother enjoyed watching the line up of Clara van Wel, The Adults, AnikaBoh&Hollie and Fat Freddy’s Drop.

‘There really is a lot of talent here,” she said, particularly enjoying Clara van Wel’s performance.

Classic cars for a good cause Chris Tobin The Hospice Vehicle Display in Blenheim was such a success last year, it’s being repeated.

The show will be held on Sunday.

A total of 300 vehicles turned up for the event in 2012, of which 250 were from Marlborough, and $5000 was raised for Hospice Marlborough.

“It wasn’t the intention to run it every year but the show had been such a success it was decided to run it again this year,” organiser Pat Pascoe said.

Anyone who has a classic car is welcome to include their vehicles.

“There’s no limit. If you think it’s a classic, we’ll accept it. It’s an opportunity to get the car out of the shed.

“We’ve got to get people to come and display and show what we’ve got in this area.”

The oldest vehicle expected in the show is a 1916 Swift which has just been restored and is believed to one of only two in the world.

“Also we hope to have a Mini that was built in Nelson and raced on the Bonneville Salt Flats in the United States.

The show will be held at the Waterlea racecourse from 11am to 3pm on Sunday.

Entry is by a gold coin donation. People wanting to display their cars can pay $5 on the day.

Immigration New Zealand is encouraging former Marlborough vineyard contractor Prubhjit Singh to leave the country of his own accord and avoid deportation. Mr Singh, who was convicted in 2010 for encouraging Indonesian sailors to work illegally, has been battling with Immigration New Zealand to gain a new visa since his work visa expired in 2008. However, it appears Mr Singh's bid to remain in the country with his wife and two sons, aged 23 months and 3 months, has been unsuccessful.

Call for river guardians to be established

By Chris Tobin If anyone knows what's being thrown into Blenheim's Taylor River, Shon Wyd should.

Twice a day the Blenheim man walks the walkway alongside the river for health reasons.

He was in a major car accident three years ago and he said, “to keep mobile I have to walk.”

As a result of these twice daily excursions he has witnesssed what is happening to the Taylor River and has not been impressed.

“Sometimes it's like a cesspool,” he said. “Bottles, glass, plastic, tyres.

“People need to take responsibility. If farmers are fined for polluting waterways, so should townie polluters.”

Many walkers, like himself, remove rubbish, as does the Marlborough District Council but Mr Wyd would like to see more being done such as a Guardians of Taylor River being established.

He envisaged this would include input from local iwi, uers of the Taylor River, someone from the Department of Conservation or similar organisation to advise on the best planting and maintenance of the river as well as a member from council “so we have democratic access to council.”

He believed also there were insufficient rubbish bins along the walkways next to the Taylor River.

“If council is to erect seating around Taylor River Reserve, then they also need rubbish bins at each station. Generally, there are not enough.”

Marlborough District Council reserves and amenities manager Rosie Bartlett said it was a matter of getting a balance and she thought the balance was right.

There was, however, a problem of the public using some of the bins as "dump stations."

Joan admitted she would not be doing any dancing, but with much practice at events like this, she knew how to have fun.

“I’m going to sit back and enjoy it all. I go to all the music festivals like Wine and Foods, and concerts at Pollard Park.”

John remembered his family trio at last year’s event, watching Clara as opening act.

“We were enjoying her as a newbie, and now we’re watching her as a star.”

Rhys, who goes to Renwick School, said he liked the concert because lots of people get together.

“Clara is who I was looking forward to the most.”

The 14th in a series of 17 shows nationwide, the tour concludes in Hamilton on March 3.

Clara van Wel graced the stage as the opening act of the Classic Hits Winery Tour on Sunday evening at Villa Maria Estate.

The look on her face proved 15 year-old Clara was thrilled to be in front of her home crowd, before she spoke a word.

“I have been really looking forward to this evening,” she smiled to the crowd as she took her first strum.

Her music career has flourished since she performed the opening act at the tour 12 months ago.

But Clara said it all felt just the same playing on stage on Sunday.

“I’m still the same person, doing what I love.”

Clara played six solo acoustic songs, making her last song Where do You Find Love; a number well known from her winning success with New Zealand’s Got Talent last year.

“I want to say thank you to them for

continually over and over again for showing their support for me. I speak truly when I say I couldn’t have done it without them. They have been there the whole way through.”

She also played a seventh bonus song on Sunday evening, per for m ing Happy Birthday to her best friend Abigail, with the crowd accompanying her.

“It was great, it was really fun being able to perform in front of the home crowd. They were really supportive.”

Time to catch up with friends and family was great, while spending a few days at home.

She has loved the last month traveling with the tour bands, as she has learned a lot about the music industry and had lots of fun.

Clara will travel back to the North Island later this week to play the final three concerts in Tauranga, Auckland, and the final gig at Hamilton’s Mystery Creek next Sunday, March 3.

The digital release of her debut single ‘Beautiful’ is this Friday, March 1.

A 21-year-old Blenheim man who tried to attack police officers at Rarangi on Sunday threatened to stab one in the face with a bottle, the Blenheim District Council heard on Monday. Petaia Samasoni, a vineyard worker of Redwoodtown, admitted charges of assaulting police, resisting police and disorderly behaviour, when he appeared in the court. He was remanded for sentencing on April 8.

Mayor predicts low rate increase This year should have one of the lowest rates movements in a decade, says Marlborough District Council Mayor Alistair Sowman.

district’s top priorities – and I believe that right at the top is the essential infrastructure to deliver better water quality across Marlborough.”

He said the biggest components in the spending programme directly related to the on-going costs of the big capital projects to raise water quality standards through sewerage and water upgrades that the council had been delivering to Blenheim and Picton.

“I can’t stress too much the importance of this work; we’re stopping the overflow of sewage into Picton harbour in bad weather, we’re getting sewage out of the Opawa River and we’re ensuring the drinking water in Blenheim and Picton meets national standards.”

Without these projects, the rates rise would have been even lower, he said.

The council meets tomorrow to consider the budget for 2013-14.

Rodeo a raging success Story and photo by Annabelle Latz It was yet another cracker day for the The Junction Hotel Tua Marina Rodeo and Vintage Machinery Field Day last Sunday.

Rodeo club president Grant Sheridan said they were blessed with great Marlborough weather, and he could not fault the stock, the crowd, or the quality of vintage machinery.

Spectator numbers were slightly down on last year, but with about 3500 people enjoying the rodeo and machinery action, Grant was not complaining.

“The local people is what makes it. And it was great to see the little kids out there dressing up in the best dressed competition.”

He is already looking forward to next year’s rodeo, and wanted to thank everyone who volunteered their time.

Peter Tester, secretary of the Tua Marina Vintage Traction and Machinery Club, said the 38 stationary engines were admired by many, and the 1934 McCormick-Deering Tin Mill, thrashing barley, was also a highlight.

There were about 30 tractors on display too.

“All the field days are good for us, there is always good interest shown. We love putting it on for the general public,” said Peter.

By Annabelle Latz A group of vineyard workers from Vanuatu will be returning to their country in a few months with more than just a harvest under their belt.

Jarred Kidwell is duty manager at Jaycar Electronics in Blenheim, and is very happy with the success of the education evenings he has been holding with them about the benefits of

solar panels.

Last Sunday 44 workers turned up at St Christopher’s Hall.

“We were teaching them how to use the solar panels. We had displays, and gave them hands on experience. It was a bit of a social time for them too.

Those over here from Vanuatu will be offered solar panels at reduced prices, to send back home to their villages and towns.

“We have had such demand for solar panels there in the past,” said Jarred.

He said having group education evenings breaks down language barriers, because those with limited English language have help from their peers.

‘When they come out here they work really hard.”

So far, 10 solar panels have been confirmed for Vanuatu.

Bear hug for Plunket How many of us have received the invaluable services of Plunket?

Plunket’s annual appeal is being held from March 4 to 10 and is titled ‘Bear Hug Appeal’.

Marlborough co-ordinator Heather Sorensen is encouraging people to give Plunket a hug by donating money, time or sharing their skills and experience.

“While Plunket’s free home and clinic visits are government funded, the many other services we provide are delivered by volunteers from funds raised in the community,” she says.

All money collected here in Marlborough is used for local Plunket services such as parent support groups, playgroups, car seat services, parenting education programmes and toy libraries.

According to Heather Plunket Marlborough is also aiming to extend its services to Picton in the future.

You can give Plunket a big hug by visiting plunket.org.nz or BNZ, giving to collectors during the appeal.

The Blenheim and Picton street appeals will be held on Friday, March 1 and collectors will be visiting homes during the appeal week.

By Celeste Lodewyk Two people living with serious lung conditions, Bridget Nolan and Martin Kenny are inviting the community to dine with them as part of a fundraising dinner next month.

This comes after a story published last month in the Sun about Martin’s everyday struggles living with his condition, Primary Pulmonary Hypertension and his wait for a double lung transplant.

After reading it local woman Erica Sprosen began organising a fundraising dinner titled the ‘Martin Kenny Appeal’, while Bridget met with Martin and began talks to set up a support group for people in similar situations.

Bridget has been publicly open about living with serious lung conditions Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and Antisynthetase Syndrome since her diagnosis.

Together with Martin, Bridget wants to make it known that there are people living in our

community with these conditions, and that they are there for support.

“When I was diagnosed there was a lack of support and I found I had no one to talk to who was in a similar situation,” she says.

Martin adds; “Although I have my own support network of family and friends, the closest person going through something similar is Nelson. It would be nice to have people close by to chat with,” he says.

The fundraising dinner and silent auction will be held at Bamboo Garden Restaurant on March 26 at 6pm, and guest speaking will be Mayor Alistair Sowman during an informal question and answer session.

Time running out to go digital Time is fast running out for Marlborough households who are still to go digital. With less than 100 days to go, almost 1600 homes in Marlborough are yet to make the move.

New research by the public information campaign Going Digital shows that an estimated 1584 Marlborough homes have televisions that won’t work once analogue TV is switched off on a regional basis on 28 April 2013.

After April 28, everyone in Marlborough who wants to watch TV will need to have Freeview or SKY, along with a satellite dish and satellite set top box.

“I’m recommending people take action now to go digital. When Hawke’s Bay went digital last year there were people who waited until the last minute and then had to go without TV for a time because installers were fully booked,”

said Greg Harford, national manager.

Right up until April 28, Going Digital staff will be out and about in Marlborough talking with people and discussing what needs to be done to make sure everyone can keep watching TV. “You don’t need a new TV to go digital but everyone will need a satellite dish and satellite set-top box,” said Mr Harford.

Red Cross store to open A new Red Cross recycling store will open at 13 Charles St in central Blenheim next month but volunteers are needed.

“The shop will be staffed by volunteers so we’re looking for a team of about 30 people,” Jill Lyne, Red Cross’ regional retail manager, South Island, said.

“We have a fantastic training programme that covers all aspects of operating the shop so people shouldn’t worry if they haven’t worked in a shop

before.”

She said money raised from the store would be used for local services and programmes such as disaster preparedness and response, the No Limited Youth Programme, Meals on Wheels and other services.

Red Cross has three recycling stores in Nelson.

Trading hours will be 9.30am to 5pm weekdays and 10am, to 2pm Saturday.

Wonderful prompt service Dear Ed, Through your column I would like to express our appreciation of the prompt and wonderful service we received from St John Ambulance and the casualty department of the Wairau Hospital.

On the morning of June 10 I slipped and fell.

I did not believe a woman in her eighties could get herself in such a tangle lying on the floor.

The immediate response from the medical alert button resulted in the quick arrival of the ambulance with the very efficient and well trained crew.

June of course had taken her fall very close to the storage area in the house with spare pillow and

blankets.

I had hardly got her untangled, taking care that she had not broken bones but concerned that she may have done damaged to her hip replacement, when the ambulance arrived.

What a difference the years have made to the ambulance service in the past 50 odd years.

Gone are the days in a country area of a volunteer driver with a First Aid Certificate and any nurse from the local hospital who happened to be available when the driver arrived to collect the ambulance.

Now we have a bright efficient well trained crew who with their confident and friendly approach

carried out the examination and removal of June to the hospital.

The prompt efficient and dedicated team at the casualty department moved quietly into action and the attitude alone must give confident to any patient they attend.

Rocks near bay Dear Ed, With regards to the on-going controversy over the proposal to shift the shipping from Picton to Clifford Bay. I would like to point out that against this shift, there is a very serious down side.

At Clifford Bay some miles out from the shore, there are at least two rocky reefs.

In adverse conditions they could be inviting an environmental disaster like the Rena in Tauranga.

Toilets out of bounds?

Dear Ed, I would like to bring to the notice of the proprietors of Countdown Springlands the fact that their toilet facilities are intentionally out of bounds to their clients.

The notice says “get a key from the checkout supervisor”.

Well try this!

First find the supervisor.

If you are lucky to do this then by the time he or she trots around waving the magic card to approve the sale of liquor to a 90 year old you are getting to the stage of “sorry, too late”.

It is time for the council to step in

and make these shops look after their clients instead of just fleecing them.

It is useless to say that using the hidden away toilet is aiding shoplifting.

Not only is this facility denied the elderly but what about pregnant mums or their little children.

The only toilet for public use in the whole complex is in the garden centre and there is usually a waiting queue.

Has no one heard of security cameras. I say roll on Pak n Save .

They might be more customer friendly.

Mayor’s interview Dear Ed, The interview with Mayor Sowman was quite interesting (Sun, Five Minutes With, February 8) .

He hates “uninformed letter writers.”

Prosser’s article Dear Ed, Don Coyote’s letter was on the right track about the Richard Prosser Muslim comment. Prosser’s article (“Investigate” magazine) was poorly balanced but it would have expressed the concerns of many Kiwis about immigration.

The funny thing is Prosser’s article was published three weeks before the criticism.

For three weeks everyone seemed

Removal of Ear Wax using Microscope & Suction

This is the message from registered nurse Mary Tolan at Ear Health on Francis St in Blenheim.

Together with her staff she operates clinics in Nelson, Richmond, Motueka and Takaka.

Ear Health was first established in Tauranga and now has 61 clinics nationwide.

Mary commenced the business in Blenheim in 2005 and, together with registered nurse Debbie Dalzell, is now operating the clinic three to four days a week.

She said a lot of people build up wax, and she has regular clients who enjoy the safe experience at Ear Health.

To assist with the removal of wax and other debris, Mary uses micro-suction.

“It’s the best alternative to syringing.”

Her services also assist with the management of ear infections and removal of foreign bodies. “Like insects, paper and chewing gum.”

Mary and Debbie are trained Ear Nurse Specialists and really enjoy their work.

“I enjoy all the lovely people we meet.

People are always happy after the procedure which is very satisfying. Everybody’s ears are different so there are challenges and its very interesting.”

Mary also does clinics in rest-homes, which has proved very popular and increased her workload.

To help with this, registered nurse Debbie Dalzell has recently joined her staff and works in the Blenheim clinic. Debbie also agreed her job is very satisfying.

“I like the clinic environment and the one on one.”

Mr Athletics It was the end of an era in Marlborough athletics when Ian Columbus stepped down as race starter at the Marlborough Athletics Club several weeks ago after over 50 years in the position.

Chris Tobin caught up with the man who could be called Marlborough’s Mr Athletics.

It says something for Ian Columbus’ tenacity that after undergoing heart surgery in the 1990s and suffering a serious leg injury in an accident he started running again.

And running well enough to win a national veterans 10,000m running title in his age group about five years ago.

That seemed to epitomise the intensity of a man who has become a bit of a legend in Marlborough athletic and harrier circles.

Check out his list of achievements: Former president of Athletics New Zealand, patron of the Tasman Athletics Centre, patron and life member of the Marlborough Athletic Club, ditto that for the Marlborough Harrier Club. Patron of Marlborough IHC until October last year.

Quite a list.

But in recent times for a man who ran thousands of miles as a runner and gave a lot to his sport as an official and administrator in this region and further afield, it has been frustrating for him to be slowed down by ill health and that badly damaged leg injury sustained in a tractor accident.

Giving up race starting after over 50 years must have been hard too although he was proud of what he achieved last year.

“We had the Marr Cup (an inter-club competition) here with Nelson and the Coast with 61 events over various grades and we didn’t have a break in any of them; I was proud of that.”

Ian, 81, came to Blenheim from Christchurch in the late 1950s to work as accountant for Thomas’ department store.

At Christchurch Boys’ High School he had played at halfback in the first XV but running was his chosen sport and he represented Canterbury at national championships over middle distance events.

After settling in Blenheim he and wife Audrey raised six children. The family has now grown to include 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

At the athletics club he became a timekeeper and took over from Bob Forbes as race starter. This latter position was a varied role too since for many years the club was the Marlborough Athletic and Cycling

Club, until cycling went its separate way.

Once a high profile sport, athletics has faded in the last 20 years due to changes in society and the emergence of touch, triathlon, mountainbiking and other activities.

Ian has seen the changes.

He could remember up to 50 to 60 athletes competing in various grades at weekly meetings back in the 1970s.

“The children’s club remains very strong but these days too much else is going on especially with touch, it’s enjoyable and an easy game to play.”

Ian has seen fine athletes over the years – in Marlborough he recalled the Patchett family and Celia Faircloth, an accomplished hurdler who died in an airplane crash while flying to England.

Olympic champions Peter Snell and John Walker, the Dixons, Rod and John, Commonwealth champion Dick Tayler, who lived in Blenheim for a period, the ‘Iron Man’ Bill Baillie, Avis Gardner, all competed in invitation meetings in Blenheim.

Ian played a part in organising these meetings and attracting the top athletes here.

“Bill Baillie came several times. Air NZ gave flight tickets for nothing and the retailers’ association raised money.”

Ian was secretary of the retailers’ association.

In the days before the Tasman centre existed, Marlborough was part of the Wellington centre which meant the trip had to be made to Wellington to compete in provincial championships.

“We had very strong teams and regularly went to the children’s championships and centre championships in harriers and athletics. We fundraised to fly over there.”

One highlight of Ian’s involvement in athletics and harriers, he said, was getting to know the famous

coach Arthur Lydiard who became a friend.

“Arthur used to come here and do some coaching; he’d give me a call and I’d arrange accommodation.

“He called a spade a spade which didn’t endear him to some members of Athletics New Zealand; he didn’t suffer fools lightly.”

Community Open Day

Excitement builds for grand opening This Friday is set to be a very special day for the staff, students, friends and whanau of Blenheim’s Koru Institute of Training and Education facility.

After months of building and renovations the Institute’s newly refurbished building at 5 Sutherland Terrace is ready to be unveiled to the public.

KITE previously utilised one portion of the building but has now extended to occupy the whole space.

CEO Monique Gemmell is proud of the new facilities and is eagerly looking forward to the opening which takes place at 5am with a blessing of the building,

followed by a champagne breakfast and then a Community Open Day from 11am - 1pm.

“The building is now looking fantastic and we have three new classrooms, two furbished classrooms, a smaller employment room and a classroom and garage space for our new Cable Logging programme.

“With all the hard work which has been put in, I can’t wait to see what it looks like finished,” she smiles.

KITE - history behind this success story KITE was established by Te Atiawa Manawhenua Ki Te Tau Ihu Trust in 1998 to provide educational opportunities for Te Atiawa, but in 2003 was bought out by charitable company Te Rau o Te Aroha Ltd and set up for the community at large.

The Blenheim-based Koru Institute of Training and Education Ltd (KITE) offers free tertiary courses to students wanting to upskill or transition to new work, while also using its charitable status to provide funding and support for countless community groups, chief executive Monique Gemmell said.

KITE is proud to say it has over 300 students studying full and part-time courses such as computing, business administration, te reo, social services

and Treaty of Waitangi training.

In July of last year, KITE also opened its sister campus in Nelson and is NZQA registered to deliver its range of programmes, one of Monique’s goals for the Institute.

With 11 staff members, half of whom are teachers, it has a turnover of half a million dollars and steadily increasing .

Its predominant student group is middle-aged European women training to re-enter the workforce.

Mrs Gemmell said the Maori values governing the institute created an effective working dynamic, where students and teachers were treated like family, which made continuing education less daunting for many students.

KITE CEO Monique Gemmell is proud to announce their recent win at the Te Wananga O Aotearoa Awards two weeks ago.

On February 13 KITE won the Te Hapai O category, adding to the Institute’s growing list of awards.

This award now stands alongside previous awards such as the the Trustpower Customer choice award for 2006, the Mana Maori South Island Best Business Award for 2007, Bronze in Business Excellence for 2008, and third place in the Powerhouse of NZ Business Award for 2011.

Considerations when choosing a builder Key qualities Hiring the right builder is crucial to the whole building experience. Those who have renovated or built in the past will agree that a happy experience is based on a good builder and subcontractors.

Positive experiences have included: • Honesty • Integrity (someone who tells the truth, keeps promises and accepts responsibility when it is due) • Knowledge of housing industry • Patience • Sympathy for customer’s goals and budgets Builder selection criteria When the tenders come in don’t automatically choose the cheapest.

Use the following criteria to decide.

• Price: If a tender is way above or below the others you should question it. Some builders tender low on the initial bid just to get the job, but they’ll probably be forced to cut corners, or rely on expensive variations along the way to make the job pay.

They may even put their own busi-

ness into jeopardy and be unable to finish the job. Expect to pay a fair price for the job as you get what you pay for.

• Examples of their work: Ask them if you can talk to someone who has used them to build or renovate, and look at examples of their work.

• Qualifications: Find out if they are qualified.

• Licensing: Check the Register of licensed practitioners to see if they are licensed. A licensed practitioner has shown they have the skills, knowledge and experience to meet government-backed national standards.

• Membership of trade organizations: Find out if they are members of New Zealand Certified Builders Association (CBANZ) or Registered Master Builders Federation (RMBF).

• Guarantees: Whether any are offered and what is covered.

Be confident in your choice: You need to be comfortable with them, believe communication channels will be open and confident of their standard of work.

Group housing company builders Group housing companies offer a range of standard designs and usually take care of the entire building process, including in some cases, the landscaping.

If you have chosen to build your home through a group housing company, the builders and subcontractors will often be part of the package.

Unless you have objections to any of the people employed or

contracted to the company, you won’t need to worry about finding and selecting your builder and subcontractors.

Many companies provide project management, guidance and advice.

Cricket boost for Springlands Chris Tobin The first match on a new cricket wicket at Springlands School was held on Friday.

The all weather $10,000 artificial wicket is the result of considerable work by the school and Marlborough Cricket over the past 18 months in a bid to encourage cricket, not just at the school, but in the Springlands area also.

“It will be a great asset for the school and we’ll have Saturday morning cricket here too,” Springlands teacher Michael Stringer said.

“The kids here play for the Wairau club but the goal is to have our own Springlands club.”

Marlborough Cricket operations manager Ed Gilhooly said they were trying to boost cricket in the area.

“There are a lot of houses in this area and it’ll be nice to have a venue in this part of town. It gives us an option.

“We were short of junior cricket grounds as well.”

Funding for the wicket came from Marlborough Cricket, NZ Cricket, the Jellyman Trust, Air Rescue and the Friends of Springlands School. Andrew Pope Homes provided labour free to establish the base for the wicket.

Paralympics, army style Nick Marfell, from Seddon, has just arrived in San Diego for the US Marine Corps Trials.

He is one of three NZ Defence Force members taking competing in this week-long sports competition; the military equivalent of the Paralympics.

student will compete in track and field events, basketball and volleyball.

The NZ Defence Force team all received injuries while serving on operational missions.

Young swimmers excel Two young Blenheim swimmers were among the winners at the State Oceankids 200m swim in Akaroa at the weekend.

Lily Bond and Kees Brady were the top for their age from a large contingent of swimmers.

in Auckland in April for a weekend training camp with a number of Olympians.

State NZ Ocean Swim series event director Scott Rice said, “It is fantastic to see the increasing numbers of children and families swimming together in our six nationwide events.

“We always get wonder-

ful feedback on the State OceanKids events (6-10 year olds) so we jumped at the chance to offer Kiwi kids the opportunity to train with their Olympc heroes.”

The OceanKids swim was held in conjunction with the State La Grande ocean swim. A toal of 850 competitors participated in the event.

A luncheon could be held in Seymour Square to coincide with the Saint Clair Vineyard half marathon, if it gains final approval Scenic Hotel Group sought the permission of the Marlborough District Council's assets and services committee recently to book a section of Seymour Square to hold a long lunch on the Friday before the half marathon.

The lunch would be ticket only serving a two course meal with wine available and a section of the square fenced off to prevent public access.

The committee recommended to council to approve the request with the charge for using the park set at $75. Council staff had recommended the fee be $200 due to the lunch being an exclusive event on a high profile site.

Scenic Hotel Group has to obtain also consents and a liquor licence for the event. The half marathon will be on May 11.

Big medal haul at Special Olympics Story and photos by Annabelle Latz Marlborough was well represented at the Upper South Island Regional Games on Saturday.

Organised by the Nelson Branch, 34 athletes, totalling a squad of 48 in total including caregivers and volunteers, attended the event.

They took part in swimming, athletics, tenpin bowling, bocce and golf, and medals were brought home from each discipline.

Levi Heather was busy on the athletics track, competing in the 50 metre and 100 metre walk events.

Although he put up a good race, he was unfortunately disqualified on technical grounds.

However, he made up for his technical glitch, showing the crowd at the closing ceremony a flawless 400 metre loop of the track at Saxton Fields, at a strong race walk pace.

Levi, 23, trains hard, and is a regular face amongst the Marlborough sporting scene.

He walked the New World Marlborough Marathon last year, representing IHC. He was very pleased with the achievement.

“I did get very tired,” he said.

When he’s not walking or training at the gym, Levi, who lives in Blenheim, is busy biking on the Taylor River, and visiting his Down Syndrome friend at Redwood Lifestyle Care and Village, Ian Sampson.

He works at the Pav n’ Pie Shop in Blenheim, taking nails out of pallets.

“I like seeing people at work,” said Levi.

Derek Quigley is deputy chairman and sports coordinator for Special Olympics Marlborough.

He was managing the tenpin bowling team on Saturday in Nelson, and was very pleased with the efforts of the 14 competitors, who picked up many medals amongst them.

“It was fun, it was such a buzz,” he said.

He said the competitors learned a lot at the weekend, both on a social level and sporting level.

Last Friday afternoon Marlborough Volleyball’s Subway Spikers’ & Premiers’ School’s Competition met and competed in the first round for this year which sees 28 teams spread throughout three grades.

The year 5/6 grade playing in the usual time-slot at 4pm is divided into two sections. Section 1 has six teams competing and saw some good play from these teams as most of the players are absolute beginners.

Last Thursday evening saw round 2 get underway of Marlborough Volleyball’s Fairweathers’ Senior Summer League at Stadium 2000.

First game up at 6pm in the Presidents Grade saw a very sharp looking MBC Seniors team compete against a more complete team from last week of Kinoaths. First set and MBC were always in control throughout the set.

Some great hitting from MBC student Cameron Steele saw his side charge away to win the first set 25-18.

Second set and MBC coach Chris Phelan made some changes and MBC still proved too strong for the Kinoaths taking the second set easily 25-16.

Kinoaths finally starting to gel in the final set and work as a team, they took an early lead of 17-7, managing once again to hold on in the final set and have a deserved set win.

Next up in the Presidents Grade was new team Woody flyers her took on Treefellas. Woody Flyers had their ‘A Team’ on court last Thursday and fed on Treefellas early mistakes taking the first set 2513. Treefellas fought back hard and finding some combinations almost took the second set.

However, Woody flyers weren’t having any of that and took the second set into extra points 27-25.

A good even third set pushed both teams but saw Treefellas come out on top 25-23 and take home at least a point for their competitive effort.
