Council listens to the people The $24 million Blenheim cultural precinct with a new library and art gallery will be shelved for three years.

Mayor Alistair Sowman said council agreed to push back the Taylor River development after earmarking more than $23 million for water schemes in Seddon, Renwick and Havelock.

Focusing on core water infrastructure meant something had to give, Sowman said.

The big winner has been the CBD which will receive a $2m revitalise budget.

Council acts on submissions Continued from page 1 Foot traffic had fallen by more than 30 per cent and many businesses were vacating their premises to work from home.

There were nearly 20 empty shops around the Blenheim CBD. Council will decide soon how the $2m will be spent in the town centre.

Businesses have been asking council for more signage from state highway one and tidying up the forum area and more grass areas.

Tim Thomas of Thomas’ Department Store says this is a fantastic opportunity for both the council and the private sector to turn this space into a local attraction. “[The spending] should bring

some much needed vibrancy to the CBD. Hopefully it will increase foot traffic and bring life back to the town centre” he says.

Mayor Alistair Sowman says “I am committed to the development of a new cultural precinct in Blenheim but for the future, not now.

“I don’t want to give the impression that we should abandon the library project.

I think it’s right for Blenheim but we may need to be patient.”

Councillors have also approved $1m to be spent on landscaping number 2 High St, the site council bought as part of the riverside precinct project.

Expo bigger and better at new venue

By Alice Peacock The young and the old flooded into the Marlborough Lines Stadium last Sunday for a fun and informative day at the annual Parent and Child Expo.

Marlborough Parents Centre President Rebecca Toms says the day was a success. A range of exhibitors provided valuable information for adult attendees, while fun and games kept the kids entertained.

“The money raised will help contribute to new childcare education courses and the costs to get these up and running from the centre’s premises on Alana Place”.

The new, spacious location allowed room for a new ‘Kid’s Zone’, enticing youngsters in with a Bunnings DIY craft area and a bungee trampoline, along with other fun-filled activities.

The yearly event offers an array of information from childcare options to financial advice, creative products, and leisure activities. The event also had the MPC Child Birth Education teachers on hand, to answer any additional questions.

More than 700 people attended, and Rebecca says the new venue allows growing room for the event in years to come.

Work under way to solve draught at pool ‘We want to keep everybody happy,’ says manager.

By Adam Poulopoulos Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 Trust chief executive Paul Tredinnick has acknowledged the stadium pool has a draught problem, and work is under way to remedy it.

A door will be placed in the changing room hallway by the end of the month to separate the pool from the other spaces.

Work is being undertaken to change air circulation rates in and out of the pool area, the cause of the draught.

An air curtain was purchased about two years ago to alleviate the problem in the reception area.

Paul compares the issue to a bathroom steaming up without the fan on, and says a balancing act needs to be found.

“We don’t want it to be too humid – it’s uncomfortable and affects the fabric of the building.

A lot of buildings are moist, humid and smell of chlorine… this is some of the best air in New Zealand.”

He says he does not want to lose

sight of how good the facility is.

“We want to keep as many punters as happy as possible. We’ve got 100,000 people creating 100,000 slightly different needs.

“At any time we could have a 90-year-old and a six-month-old and all ages in between in the pools.

“One of our great strengths is we have eight pools and eight different temperatures to choose from, and one advantage for people feeling the cold is for your entry fee, you get free access to the spa, which in many pools in new Zealand you don’t.”

The Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 Trust is also discussing other expansions.

Plans for a rock climbing wall, mini golf course and a zero-depth aquatic play area for preschoolers have been discussed.

All the facilities will be located on-site.

Paul says the three developments, as well as development for sporting community groups, were all large investment areas the trust was considering.

Kaipupu Point beaten to award The Kaipupu Point Wildlife Sanctuary was nominated for a Green Ribbon environment award, but lost out to the Project Crimson Trust.

Kaipupu Point was nominated in the ‘Protecting our Biodiversity’ category.

The awards were announced at a ceremony at Parliament on Thursday evening.

Netballers not moving yet

By Adam Poulopoulos It is still uncertain whether Marlborough Netball will remain at Horton Park or move to Lansdowne Park as part of the proposed sporting hub development.

Marlborough District Council assets and services manager Mark Wheeler says council had been hopeful of pushing the decision through, but there is no strong preference either way within Marlborough Netball yet.

“There’s not a clear mandate for a decision to be made tomorrow. Over the next year I

hope they get the momentum to go and the momentum to stay.”

He says council will continue to investigate the logistics of the Lansdowne Park option in the meantime.

Council hope a final decision will be made next year.

Plans are in place to undertake a minor upgrade of Horton Park to ensure player safety in the interim.

The funds for the upgrade will be taken from the $295,000 put aside for a netball upgrade.

A feasibility study has proved a move to Lansdowne Park is viable, and Marlborough Netball president Beth Tester recently presented the findings of a 109-person survey to council, which showed a slight majority in favour of a Lansdowne Park move.

Marlborough Netball is holding a meeting with representatives of clubs and schools on June 22.

Tester says she wants clubs to discuss the issues of concern and inform their representatives before the meeting.

Book fair The Cancer Society Marlborough is holding its annual book fair fundraiser this week.

The fair begins tomorrow and runs until Sunday at 2 Alfred Street.

The fair is open from 10am-5pm on all four days.

The Cancer Society is continuing to take donations of pre-loved books up until the 14th.

They can be dropped off at 2 Alfred St.

Small people make a big clean up

By Alice Peacock Renwick School students are setting an example for other Marlborough schools, with Blenheim, Witherlea, Seddon, and Waikawa schools planning to mirror the school’s annual “Big Renwick Clean-up”.

Volunteers joined students from Renwick School in the Big Renwick Clean up on Monday, after weather pushed the event back from its original date last Wednesday.

Renwick School’s senior conservation group “The Green Ferns” was a driving force behind the day and its lead-up.

Saxon Ferris, who leads the group, says he has been spreading the word about the importance of cleaning up the environment.

Eleri James-Sitters, a keen member of the environmental unit, says “one of the best things is seeing the improvements in Renwick’s cleanliness each year”. To Eleri, the day is a chance for the small people of Renwick to make a big difference.

“What we do and learn today could help generations in years to come”.

Students from Renwick’s junior school took on rubbish in Renwick’s residential streets. The senior schools followed up on this effort, heading into the township and tackling Boyce Street and High Street along with neighbouring sports fields and houses.

Principal Simon Heath says the significantly smaller amount of rubbish was a sign that the day is successfully working towards a cleaner, greener Marlborough.

Simon says “the occasion always brings out some very strong conservationists in the mix, who loved getting out and cleaning up Renwick”.

By Adam Poulopoulos St John Marlborough is elated that a better-than-expected fundraising effort has allowed them to provide the region with top-of-the-line monitor/ defibrillators.

St Joh n h a s p u r ch a s e d four LIFEPAK 15 monitor/ defibrillators for use in the region.

Two will be based in Blenheim, one in Picton and one in Havelock.

St John raised $100,000 in just over a year to purchase the machines, with donors including the Pelorus and Redwood Trusts and several individual contributions.

Fundraising was also aided by the St John Community Shop, which opened on Boyce Street

in September last year.

The machines act as defibrillators, but also automatically track a patient’s vital signs, alert paramedics to changes as they happen and keep patient records.

The LIFEPAK 15 has been made standard across St John branches in New Zealand.

St John Marlborough territory manager Murray Neal says the initial aim was to buy two of the machines, but the fundraising allowed them to purchase four and complete the district-wide project.

He says having four means all Marlburians can be treated the same.

The machines are currently in use.

All it would take is a door at the start by the reception. Easy fix.

From the barracks to Blenheim

Marlborough Osteopathic Services co-owner Paul Sell and his family have taken a circuitous route to arriving in Marlborough.

Paul spoke to Adam Poulopoulos about his career, which included travel around the world with the British Army.

It was on a three-week holiday in 2005 when Paul Sell and wife Emma decided immigrating to New Zealand was a possibility.

In February 2013, with two more trips behind them and daughter Chloe in tow, they made the move to Marlborough. In January they became business owners, purchasing Marlborough Osteopathic Services.

Paul’s family circumstances and career have made him a seasoned traveller already.

He was born in Malta, where his parents were stationed as civil servants. About 15 months later his family shifted to Cheltenham in the south of England.

Paul admits he was not a model student. He decided to join the army aged 16, but he says he hesitated about his decision.

“I decided at the 11th hour to stay at school and do my A-Levels, and

dad said ‘you must be kidding.’

“He literally came home with brochures for the army.”

Paul spent about 20 years as an administrator in the army. He says his original plan had been to stay for six years, and then leave to become an accountant. Instead, his career took him around the world. He spent time in Norway, the former Yugoslavia, Canada, Sierra Leone and the Middle East during the second Gulf War. In his mid-20s he took a massage course and considered moving on, but decided against it. He progressed up the ranks to become a major, before leaving in 2007.

“I got a bit disillusioned. While my job was always administration I always liked people contact,” he says.

“Working in a headquarters drove me round the bend,” he says.

One of Paul’s great passions is

sport, so much so he says his best man made a joke about it during his wedding speech.

“He went to the date of our first anniversary and noticed a really obscure event like the World Tiddlywinks Championships were on.

“He said ‘Emma, you know how you’ll be spending your anniversary.”

Paul tried his hand at several sports, but swum and played water polo at a representative level.

He also competed nationally in the modern pentathlon while in the army, and it was through his trainer he took an interest in osteopathy.

“It (modern pentathlon) is quite hard on the body and all the disciplines are so different.

“The guy who prepared me to compete was an osteopath who used to be a pentathlete.”

He began his course in 2007, and after a stint working in England he and his family made the move to Blenheim.

He was of fered a job at Marlborough Ostoepathic Services by friend Marcus Ferreira, who he met in the army, before subsequently purchasing the business.

“It was always the plan. We just bought it slightly earlier than we thought,” he says.

He says the New Zealand way of life was part of what attracted his family to make the move.

“Kiwis are always friendly, and they like a beer.

“They’ve got a ‘work hard, play hard ethos.”

Outside of work Paul coaches the Marlborough Boys’ College water polo team, swims and likes to bike the roads and trails around Marlborough.

Keeping our elderly SAFE Awareness Day activites On Thursday, June 18 there will be a free concert at the Forum from 12noon as part of the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The entertainer for the event is Phil Steans from Nelson, who has just won one of the sections at the Gore Gold Guitar awards.

There will be a remembrance circle also at the Band Rotunda, where people are invited to write

a happy memory about an older person in their lives.

A collection will be held on June 18 at The Forum, at the Warehouse and at Countdown Supermarkets in Springlands and Redwoodtown.

It’s time to stop elder abuse Age Concern needs help stopping elder abuse in our communities.

Age Concern Marlborough community support worker Catherine Donnelly says that although Age Concern receives 2000 referrals of elder abuse every year, including financial, psychological and physical abuse, there is still hope that we can all make a difference and improve the lives of older people.

Age Concern’s elder abuse and neglect prevention (EANP) teams work closely with older people and their families to resolve issues of abuse and ensure it does not reoccur.

Age Concern also works in the community to educate people about the signs and effects of abuse to help prevent it from happening and how to challenge disrespectful attitudes.

Catherine says that the Marlborough community can challenge disrespectful attides towards older people by promoting respect.

“Love and cherish your older relatives, respect and honour their wisdom, include them in your plans and social activities, encourage them to make their own decisions and let them set their own pace.”

She also says that we all need to keep an eye out for elder abuse in our community.

Awareness is ‘imperative’ “About half of abusers are adult children...” Age Concern Age Concern is raising awareness of elder abuse during Elder Abuse Awareness Week (June 15-22) which begins on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June 15).

Age Concern Marlborough community support worker Catherine Donnelly says that raising awareness around this issue is imperative.

EANP services receive an average of eight calls per day about older people suspected of being abused or neglected.

In three quarters of these cases, abuse or neglect is confirmed.

In New Zealand the most commonly reported types are financial abuse and psychological abuse.

“The more people understand about elder abuse and what they can do to stop it, the better.”

“They make decisions for the older person without even asking them what it is they

want.

“Or, they ridicule them about the decisions they do make. Sometimes, they pressure older people into doing things they don’t really want to do - like giving a loan, selling their house or letting a family member move in with them for free.

“Attitudes like these show a lack of respect for the older person, for their quality of life and for their needs.”

Catherine says three quarters of elder abuse and neglect in New Zealand occurs

at the hands of family members.

About half of abusers are adult children and about half of the abused elders are over 80-years-old.

“This is one of the reasons it stays hidden.

Many older people feel ashamed their own flesh and blood is treating them badly, so they won’t talk about it,” she says.

“We help people recognise that older people have a lot to contribute and are very valuable members of families and the community,” Catherine says.

Keeping our elderly SAFE

Peter’s story Peter was 92 years old, living alone and required 24 hour care.

He had terminal cancer, so was very frail and particularly vulnerable.

He did not have ‘enduring power of attorney for personal care and welfare’ in place.

With the help of his family, Peter privately employed a live-in caregiver – Samantha.

Previously, Samantha had been caring for Peter as an employee of an agency, but her employment was terminated when she was found to be stealing (unbeknown to Peter and his family).

Peter’s family contacted Age Concern with concerns about that Samantha was displaying bullying behaviour (towards family members).

The family also had concerns about the ‘grooming behaviour’ by Samantha, which resulted in Peter suddenly not wanting to see his family.

During this time, Peter received several days of inpatient medical treatment.

The hospital social worker noticed something was wrong and alerted the Age Concern Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention social worker that Samantha was acting more like a partner than a caregiver.

Don’t ignore the signs of abuse, support the family member by contacting Age Concern.

The social worker reported that the caregiver acted inappropriately in the hospital, including telling the doctors what to do, refusing to leave the room during doctor’s rounds and placing herself between Peter and his daughter at the medical consultation.

It then came to light that Samantha had displayed similar grooming behaviour a year earlier – when she had been a private caregiver for an elderly couple in another town.

She had tried to get legal documents signed over to her, including the title to the couple’s land.

With this knowledge, and consent from

Peter, the Age Concern Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention social worker negotiated with Samantha to depart immediately.

Peter’s family immediately employed another caregiver who was extremely professional and had a good knowledge of his palliative care needs.

Peter appreciated being well cared for in the peaceful environment of his own home, surrounded by his loving family, until he passed away several weeks later.

New manager ‘great asset’ Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk After over 25 years of being in business, Caltex Main Street Station owner Grant Stubbs has decided to pull back and employ a manager to take care of the day-to-day operations.

Now greeting customers as they fuel up at the station and Fix convenience store is new manager Paul Fletcher.

Paul joins Wayne, Pete, Bonnie and Wingy who have been ‘fantastic’ long serving staff members, Grant says.

‘Fletch’, as he is affectionately known, worked for Grant 18 years ago and over that time the two remained good friends.

“I went to work for Grant for what was meant to be six months but turned into five years. It’s great being back working for him; this role has the best of all the things I like

to do,” Paul says.

“There’s also been plenty of humour,” Grant adds.

“Because we look similar there’s been some confusion between us,” he laughs.

Having Paul’s friendly manner and background in admin and retail makes him a great asset to the team, Grant says.

“He loves what he does, he enjoys the interaction with customers and has a good handle on how things run here.

“Paul will be the point of contact from here on so I encourage customers to say hi, he is very friendly and approachable.”

Children, teachers and parents celebrated childhood education centre ABC Mayfield’s new playground, a project they all had input in, on Friday afternoon.

The new attractions include a bike track, seed garden and bark area for arts and crafts, and still to come are movable boxes, which centre manager Leanne Brown says “can be turned into a pirate ship.”

Leanne says the project was a team effort.

“Our playground was at the stage where it needed a revamp, and we worked with the kids on what they wanted to see in the programme.

“We worked with the parents and the teachers as well.”

As well as the new attractions the sandbox has been moved and the space made safer than before.

By Adam Poulopoulos Blenheim-based Jayda Elkington had extra reason to smile on Thursday night, as the New Zealand Youth Volleyball team defeated Australia on her home court.

The Marlborough Girls’ College Year 11 student played the full match as New Zealand recorded a straight-sets 25-12, 26-24, 25-20 victory at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000.

About 300 people turned out to watch the match, cheering loudly when Jayda was announced in the starting line-up before the match, and every time New Zealand won a point.

Jayda set the ball well throughout the match, contributing to a strong New Zealand team effort.

After losing the first three points in the first set, New Zealand established a comfortable buffer which they did not relinquish.

The second set was filled with

momentum swings and long rallies, making for engrossing viewing. A slow start by New Zealand saw Australia establish a 10-2 lead, but New Zealand staged a fightback, achieving set point at 24-20. Australia fought back to make it 24-all, before New Zealand held their nerve and secured the two points they needed to take the set.

New Zealand maintained their momentum, and held Australia at arm’s length throughout the third set to take the match.

The match was the third in a fourtest series. New Zealand won the final match in Wellington 3-2 on Saturday to draw the series. They were up 2-0 before withstanding a strong Australian fightback to win the fifth set and the match.

The result means the series was drawn two all.

Australia won the first match in straight sets in Christchurch, before Laike Baker serves. winning in five sets in Nelson.

Jack O’Leary made the move from Dunedin to Picton in November after finishing at Kavanagh College, and has since moved full-time to Blenheim.

The sculler is now affiliated with the Central Regional Performance Rowing Centre, while also being selected for the national Pathway to Podium development programme.

O’Leary says he has swapped rowing by himself in Otago Harbour, which is exposed to the elements, for the opportunity to train on the Wairau River with other rowers.

“It’s just such a blessing to have the Wairau River, where you can get water 365 days a year, and the level of coaching on so many different aspects, which help you address your weaknesses.”

O’Leary trains six days a week, and says being surrounded by other high-level rowers is helping him learn more about different rowing styles.

He gets the chance to put the training to the test with the New Zealand under-21 rowing team, which will have regattas home-andaway against Australia later in the year.

He was selected for the squad after picking up a bronze medal with the New Zealand

He says making the full New Zealand team and winning Olympic medals is his main aim.

“The Olympics in 2020 in Tokyo is the main goal for me.

“For the next couple of years I’m aiming to be in the under-23 team and for the next two or three Olympic cycles I want to be in a sculling boat with the aim of winning gold in 2024 and 2028.”

In less than two weeks O’Leary heads to Lake Karapiro to train with the under-21s.

Outside of rowing, Jack works as a cellar and bottling hand at Renaissance Brewing.

Harriers Marlborough Harriers are hosting their weekly pack run tomorrow, leaving from the clubrooms at 6pm.

On Sunday the club are holding their main annual fundraiser, the Mt Vernon Grand Traverse.

FOOTBALL The Marlborough Development team thumped Nelson FC 7-0 on Saturday afternoon, with Taine Swete scoring five goals in the second half.

In Marlborough division one football, Central Pirates and BV Development both secured wins to maintain their places at the top of the table.

BV Development leads the table by three points, but Pirates have played one less game.

Biddy Kate’s Rangers and BV Cobras drew 1-1.

The Wairau Taniwha were beaten 76-18 by the Richmond Rabbits at Oliver Park on Saturday afternoon.

Brian Stewart from the Clubs of Marlborough won the Patron’s Singles Indoor Bowls Championship at the Simcox Stadium on Sunday when he defeated Errol Fairhurst of Pastimes in an excellent final.

Leading 10 – 5 after nine of the regulation 12 ends Stewart looked set for an easy victory, but Fairhurst clawed his way back, winning two of the final three ends to narrow the winning margin.

In the Plate final, Tony Fenemor was all class, dominating the event over Julian Adams by 19 –8.
