When Blenheim woman Chloe Rarity was 29 she received the shock diagnosis of breast cancer.

After chemotherapy, radiation treatment and a mastectomy she had beaten the cancer and remained free of it until July last year, when doctors discovered the cancer had returned and was found in her lungs and bones.

Chloe, now aged 33, has Stage 4 cancer which means this time it’s terminal.

Fundraising supports mum faced with terminal cancer Continued from page 1.

It has been a huge blow for the wife and mother of two children, Dakota (9) and Hunter (7). Chloe and husband Daniel have also fostered more than 50 children for both emergency and long term placements, something Chloe can no longer do.

An outpouring of support from friends, family and members of the public has been “overwhelming” for the family as they continue to build memories together while Chloe is still strong enough to do so.

One way has been monetary donations via a Givealittle page which will help to support their day-to-day living, and to take the pressure off whilst they face the unthinkable.

It’s something they’ve put off until now, but acknowledge that the financial support will help them to function and provide much needed memories for their children.

After coming across Chloe’s

Givealittle page, local catering business owners Jodie and John Eaton decided to step up and help where they can by creating an online auction event for this Friday.

The couple began contacting local businesses last Saturday and by yesterday (Tuesday) they already had thousands of dollars’ worth of products and services donated to be auctioned off.

These include flights, gift packs, restaurant vouchers, a BBQ package, canvas printing, artwork, professional photography, fuel vouchers, hairdressing products and services, DJ and event packages to name a few.

And the list continues to grow by the day, Jodie says.

“I can’t believe the response so far,” she says.

Asked where the idea began to create a fundraising auction, Jodie says it was after seeing Chloe’s Givealittle page.

“Her Givealittle page happened to

show up on my Facebook newsfeed, so I opened it and read her story.

“Then I remembered I’d followed a page a few years ago about this local woman who battled breast cancer, and I realised that this was the same woman.

“I can’t believe the response so far” “I lost my mum to cancer last year and I know how unpredictable it is and time is really of the essence. Chloe has young children and her life should only just be starting, but unfortunately she now has terminal cancer.

“So I messaged Chloe and asked if she’d mind if I tried to raise her some more money. I then asked her what were some of the things she really wanted to do with her family while

she could, and I thought if we could at least achieve one of those things then it’s a win,” she says.

One of Chloe’s wishes was take her family to Hanmer Springs.

“Her children have never been to the North Island either so she said she really wanted to take them to Rainbow’s End,” Jodie adds.

“So that’s my goal. I want to get them to both and I want her kids to have some cool memories for later in life.”

Jodie and John, who own JJs Food Truck and Eaton Grazing, have begun tagging the supporting businesses that have made donations via the JJs Facebook page.

This page will be where the auctions will start this Friday, February 5 at 6pm.

Face mask raises ire One Picton resident was very disgruntled to see the face mask which was this week placed on the statue of a soldier atop Picton’s war memorial gate.

Some agile member of the public had placed the mask at a time unknown to the Citizens of Picton, and while some may have seen it merely as a tongue-in-cheek gesture, local Maurice Burgess took action.

Rather than looking at it as a timely reminder of the times in which we live, he made several complaints.

Responses were muted, with his level of outrage not necessarily shared by everybody.

His first two calls were to the Picton RSA, which has no responsibility for the

memorial, saying he was angry about the lack of respect the action showed.

He then tried the council, but no action followed.

So, says Maurice in his Facebook post: ”Money cannot buy the love and respect of the Picton Fire Brigade. They were the only ones to help in taking down the facemask...”

The challenge was accepted and the mask was removed.

(Though given the percentage of returned service people who died in the great pandemic called the Spanish flu in the years following World War I, it could equally well be argued that the symbol could be seen a powerful one.)

Good neighbours, good friends

Whatever your culture, wherever you live, whatever your age, whatever you grow or like to eat, you are invited to come together and celebrate three events at one central location.

The events are on March 20, Neighbours Day Aotearoa, March 21 Race Relations Day and the gardener’s autumn equinox also on March 21.

It’s come about because Charlotte Wood, coordinator of Top-of-the South Neighbourhood Support in Marlborough and Deborah Dalliessi, manager of the Marlborough Multicultural Centre, are neighbours.

They meet together at the Marlborough Multicultural Centre, housed at the gracious white two-storied house at 21 Henry Street which provides space for a number of support groups.

It’s proving to be the ideal site for a Good Idea that the two co-ordinators have dreamed up to celebrate those three important days.

On Saturday March 20, between 12.30-3pm, there will be a garden party, complete with a complimentary dainty sandwich, cupcake or fruit with a refreshing traditional tea from several cultures or maybe a cold mocktail available.

There will be prizes for best teacup or cocktail glass if you bring your own, or just want to chat to someone who has, and vote for them.

“It’s an opportunity to make new friends and to mix and connect with people from different

cultures, and maybe they already live in your neighbourhood,” says Charlotte.

While Deborah says: “Being together, talking together, helps us learn and grow more comfortable with each other in the communities in which we live and achieve a sense of belonging, “It will be ver y informal though.

As well, Crop Swap Marlborough will host their monthly event there, so you can bring vegies or flowers or plants to swap, and enjoy other people’s produce at no cost.

Knitters, those who can and those who just want to try - will be able to sit down on the friendship benches and “sit and yarn”.

To help get the event off the ground, Charlotte and Deborah are looking for volunteers to assist with prizes, spreading the word and set up for the day.

Total fire ban All of Marlborough, urban and rural, moved to a prohibited fire season on Wednesday January 27.

This means a total ban on outdoor fires and previously granted fire permits are no longer valid.

A Rural Fire spokesperson says that the hot and dry weather means fires will start and spread out of control very easily.

“Avoid any activity that will generate heat and produce sparks in dry areas - such as welding and grinding metal, fireworks and lawnmowers.

“Barbecues, hangi and umu are still allowed but make sure you have a hose or bucket of water nearby.”

He asks that you check on any old burn sites for heat and smoke, rake the area out and apply water.

Pollard Park shade destroyed by vandals Knife-wielding vandals have left a popular Blenheim playground without sun protection during a run of hot weather. Shade sails in Pollard Park were cut with a knife, repaired, then “slashed again, this time completely destroying them” in what the Marlborough District Council is calling “mindless vandalism”.

Replacing the sails cost $10,000 and left visitors to face the hot summer temperatures, which climbed to 36.5 degrees Celsius last week. A council spokesman said the poles holding up the new sails would be made taller in the hopes of discouraging further vandalism.

The council was unsure if the vandal was working alone, or in a group, the spokesman said.

Freedom campers should install smoke alarms says a fire investigator, after a van caught fire at a Marlborough camp site.

Emergency services responded to a fire at the Wairau Diversion, north of Blenheim, about 8.30pm last Monday after noticing smoke during a training session at a nearby river.

But despite their efforts, the fire devastated a freedom camping van belonging to a couple from the United Kingdom, who were on their first night in the South Island.

The couple had been living in New Zealand since February last year, but moved into the self-contained vehicle about five months ago. They had converted it themselves.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand senior fire investigator John Foley said last Wednesday morning firefighters were still attempting to piece together what caused the van fire.

He said freedom camping vehicles had a “huge” fire loading, or a large amount of combustible material per square metre, as most had a small floor space but were filled with belongings.

They often also contained equipment that cooked food.

To reduce the fire risk, he recommended freedom campers kept their cooking area free from flammable items, like tea towels, and place cookers on non-flammable surfaces.

“Cookers can radiate heat at over 600 degrees [Celsius] if they’re running flat out. That’s enough to set fire to timber.”

He also suggested campers thought about the camp environment before parking their vehicle.

“There was no dry grass there this time, but there were fuels.”

on Tuesday it was lucky the van had not been parked under one of the site’s low-hanging pine trees, like other vehicles, as the fire could have spread.

Some threw water on the grass to stop the fire breaking out.

The area around the vehicle was covered in dry pine needles.

A smoke alarm could have alerted the couple to the fire before it had taken hold, Foley said while suggesting campers alarm their vehicles. The couple were metres away eating dinner with other campers when they saw smoke coming from their van.

“The big thing is if this incident

had happened later that night, when the couple were asleep, then they may not have woken up ...

People’s sense of smell isn’t there when they’re asleep.

“They’re cheap enough and could save your life on the road.”

Fire extinguishers could also be kept on hand, although Foley said in the couple’s case, their van was likely too far gone.

The fire happened at a freedom camping site run by the Marlborough District Council. The council was considering improving the site’s layout to enhance its health and safety.

A Local Democracy reporter

asked on Wednesday if the site’s redevelopment was taking fire safety into account, but the council declined to comment further on the incident.

A council spokeswoman said on Tuesday afternoon the council believed a camping gas canister had exploded. “[The] council will work with the individuals involved and insurers to undertake [the] removal of the van,” she said.

Police did not respond to the fire.

Yes to a by-pass I would like to endorse the letter from M. Whitmee in last week’s paper (January 27, 2021 p. 6) which mentions the benefit that a by-pass would bring to Blenheim.

You only need to look at Taupo and the difference a by-pass has made to that city. Freight vehicles as well as the general public using the ferries more often than not want to transit Blenheim as quickly as possible and a by-pass

would facilitate that as well as reduce the congestion along Grove Rd and south on Highway 1.

I would encourage the council to promote this exercise and work with the appropriate Government departments to get the ball rolling.

The new bridge is great and well overdue but will do nothing to alleviate the road congestion.

Let’s do it.

Over the past year or so, quads have been accused of desecration towards dotterels, katipo, the foreshore and the likes, which have all been proved baseless duds, but now it’s “the reef needs to recover”.

I rode to Cape Campbell recently 7km past the lighthouse, all on sand and below the high tide zone easily. To be accused of degrading the reef on my ride down there is bordering on pathetic.

I went fishing at Ward Beach last week and it became obvious to me through the lack of bird life and tracks in the sand that a cat was living there.

It’s a reserve and is extensively trapped by someone trying to make a difference, but their trap systems are poor at catching cats.

I took five traps down there the next night and caught a three-year-old wild tomcat.

It would be dumb and visionless to ban the very people with outdoor skills who know the reef system and environment better than most and with the gear to get down there.

My hobby is gathering the very best of wild foods that I can and it keeps me fit and

healthy, so don’t lock me out of my backyard as a lot of people like me use this resource too.

I think an easy and workable solution would be to let the quads on the beaches three hours either side of low tide, strictly forbidden above high tide zone and on the reefs, and signage stating the simple rules and penalties.

Children flock to libraries for holiday fun

The new section of stopbank in the Taylor River Reserve

Work on the Taylor River stopbank upgrade at Nelson Street is progressing well. It’s all part of the Council’s ongoing flood protection maintenance and improvements across the Wairau Plain.

The 80m length of stopbank between 31A Nelson Street and the Beaver Road entrance to the Taylor River Reserve is part way through reconstruction. Once completed it will help ensure Blenheim continues to be protected to a ‘one in 100 year’ flood standard.

Marlborough District Libraries have been full of children these school holidays.

There have been lots of stories and craft sessions, movies at Picton Library and a special trivia quiz. There was also a special performance at each library from Kiwi Jam with lots of music, fun storytelling and enthusiastic participation from the children.

More than 350 children have participated in the annual summer reading programme, reading a minimum of four books and chatting with the staff about what they’ve read and receiving prizes for their hard work.

Special end-of-life model for Sounds residents Sarah Carberry of Mahau Sound, says Compassionate Community is a growing worldwide movement, bringing new and deeply reflective approaches to palliative care, as reporter Glenise Dreaver finds out.

The Fare-well Trust, based in the Marlborough Sounds is, she says, one of the first of its kind in the world to work with the dying and their whanau in a uniquely challenging environment.

Sarah set up The Fare-well Trust in 2016. She arrived from the UK with her two sons and her mother, who suffers from dementia.

A Kiwi, Sarah says she spent many years in the caregiving environment in the UK. “However, I realised that comi ng back to my homela nd wit h my family was the right choice.”

Sarah started to make the magic happen when she purchased land in at Mahau and began to build her home and a granny flat for her ailing mother.

This was later to become the base for the Fare- well Trust and the storage place for all their equipment.

Early on, Sarah met up with Jann Hook, a local.

Jann was a funeral celebrant and knew many Sounds residents.

Sarah says she saw her vision for those in need in the Sound’s community in their end-of-life phase and happily came on board as the chair of the Trust and a Companion to the Dying, working alongside Sarah.

Now, Sarah says she has been “blown away” by the community in the Sounds and the skill sets that some of her neighbours have.

For example, just ten minutes down the road she met another soon-to-be co-worker Jenny Garing. Jenny was the administrator for Pelorus Area Health Trust who very generously took on the administrator’s role, among other things, for the Fare-well Trust.

“Another close neighbour includes a chartered accountant specialising in charity work,” says Sarah.

As the work the trust undertook grew, Sarah and the team soon realised that, although they worked very closely with

the Hospice Marlborough Medical Team, it would be wonderful to have a palliative care nurse in the Sounds.

Sarah comments: “I was hoping to find a nurse nearby … I found two, Deb and Sari.”

The vision was always to support those in the Sounds who are dying but don’t wish to travel into town for their end-of-life care.

Sarah, who calls herself a ‘Companion to the Dying’ also known as

a ‘Soul Midwife’ or ‘Death Doula’ says: “Once I started working to help people die well, in their place of choice and in their chosen way, I realised that was what I am here for.

Sarah and Jenny both commented on their “wonderful, compassionate community”, saying it can be as simple as baking, gardening, shopping, or sitting with someone.

“And we are always keen to take new volunteers on board.

“Other wonderful contributors are the Havelock Menzshed, which makes coffins and the family can decorate them,” says Sarah.

Jann’s son Jarrod, of ‘Hooked on Engineering’ has designed and manufactured cooling plates so the families can keep their loved ones at home instead of being embalmed before being cremated or buried.

“The Trust has been very fortunate to have been gifted equipment from local businesses and received

grants enabling the purchase of a four-wheel-drive van to enable them to transport the team and equipment to other places in the Sounds,” says Sarah.

As she has done considerable training in the concept of compassionate communities, she is now being asked to speak about what is being called the Sounds model.

“She’s just so very passionate,” says Jenny. “That’s why this work has got worldwide attention.”

Tracks close as Wither Hills’ fire danger escalates All upper tracks in the Wither Hills Farm Park are now closed.

With the recent warm, windy weather, the grass cover and vegetation has become tinder dry. The Mountain Bike Park and all of the Wither Hills Farm Park, except for the lower tracks, are now closed in the interests of public safety.

Marlborough District Council strongly advises users not to enter the closed areas and use only the Lower Farm Track, Mapp Track, the town boundary or Taylor River Reserve tracks.

‘Upper Track Closed’ signs have been installed at numerous entry points in the Farm Park to reinforce the message.

Over the summer months, Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) reviews the fire danger status daily. Once the fire risk reaches ‘Very High’ and grass curing indices exceed 70, closure of at risk areas of the farm park takes place. These access restriction trigger points are defined in the Wither Hills Farm Park Fire Management Plan.

“Given the mixture of dry fuels, slope, warm temperatures and windy

conditions, a fire would spread quickly, placing people at extreme risk,” said Robin Dunn, Council’s Parks and Open Spaces Officer. “We encourage all visitors to the Farm Park to be fire-wise and keep safe,” he said.

Principal Rural Fire Officer for the Marlborough Kaikoura Rural Fire District Chris Hayles says; “With little rain in the forecast and higher temperatures expected, along with the current windy conditions, we would estimate the indices could push to ‘Extreme’ in the next week or so.”

The heaviest fish overall weighed in at last year’s Renwick Arms Country Club Fishing Competition was an 11.85kg kingfish, so who will beat that weight this year?

This competition has become a regular feature on the calendar for the country club and attracts hundreds of competitors from all over the region.

Last year saw 230 competing in the adults Open Section, and 66 children.

An incredible number of prizes and cash have been donated by around 50 local businesses which enables organisers to put together an impressive prize pool worth an incredible $15,000 for category winners and spot prizes.

One very exciting prize is a fishing charter.

This year’s competition is set to run over the weekend of March 5-7 and features 10 categories in the adults’ sections, and seven categories in the kids’ section.

There are both sea and freshwater fish included in the categories.

Entries close at 9pm on Thursday, March 4 and are available at outlets displaying posters, or at the Renwick Arms Country Club at 92 High Street.

For more than 30-years, the Renwick Post Office and Newman Graphics embroidery and screen printing services on High Street have served the local community well.

It is a place where locals stop for their postal, printing and embroidery needs; and a friendly chat with staff.

The New Zealand Graphic Design & Services Ltd purchased this business from Allan Newman in September 2019, who is now enjoying a well-earned retirement in the Marlborough Sounds.

The Post Shop front entrance has had a makeover and the New Zealand Post Office services continue along with availability of PO Boxes, but no longer offers NZTA services.

‘Dangerous’ Weld Pass overlooked for upgrades

Roading bosses are “horrified” that a dangerous stretch of Marlborough highway has again been overlooked for funding, after they first requested the safety upgrades six years ago.

Over the last 20 years, there have been two fatal crashes and 15 serious crashes along Weld Pass, south of Blenheim.

But instead of putting the notorious stretch forward for its next round of funding, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) proposed the already completed Opaoa River Bridge, its “surprise” State Highway 6 and State Highway 62 roundabout, and improvements by Picton’s new ferry terminal.

Marlborough District Council regional transport committee chairman Francis Maher said its members were “quite shocked”.

Marlborough, Nelson and Tasman’s councils had been pushing for upgrades to the Weld Pass since 2015, estimated to cost $16 million, and dubbed it their “most significant project”.

Vehicles had a “high probability” of plummeting off Weld Pass in a

crash, made even more possible by the road’s tight bends.

“We have become a victim of the Government Policy Statement [on land transport]. The Government is prioritising other things, like improving cycleways and walkways,” Francis said.

“If something is not done to that piece of road in the next 20 years, it will be like we’re stepping back into the Dark Ages.”

The committee signed a letter asking for NZTA to include Weld Pass in its next National Land Transport Programme, which set out what projects the Government should fund.

NZTA director of regional relationships Emma Speight said the agency had received feedback from several councils, which it had “carefully considered” and was responding to.

She did not explain why Weld Pass was left off the list.

“Once we have shared our response [with the] Marlborough District Council and had an opportunity to discuss [this] with them, we will be able to share updates on specific projects.”

In 2015, NZTA announced a $221m package for the Top-of-the South under its programme, which included an amount for “Weld Pass improvements” to better travel times

and safety.

But a change in Government and a new road policy meant by 2018, improvements to Weld Pass had fallen by the wayside. This was despite NZTA having already carried out public consultation on proposed solutions for the “high-risk” road.

Marlborough’s committee pointed out danger zones along the road to an NZTA boss last February in a renewed bid for upgrades, which it doubled down on after a string of deaths.

Last week, Marlborough, Nelson and Tasman’s regional transport committees widened their scope and named the entire road between Blenheim and Ward a priority under the top of the south’s proposed new regional land transport plan.

Eighteen fatal crashes had occurred on the twisting road separating the two towns in the last 20 years, including four deaths last year. Ward man Damian Pollock, Seddon men Ross Wallace and Geoffrey Hough, and a person who had yet to be named died on the road within the space of a month.

“It was agreed by members of the other two councils, particularly those in Tasman, that this project is important to this region,” Francis said. “It’s about connectivity, as well as safety. It’s not just for Marlborough, it’s for the whole of

the country.”

But the project fell from the Top-of the-South’s highest priority to its 14th, of 14 projects. Replacing it in first place was the multimillion-dollar redevelopment of Picton’s ferry terminal.

Currently, NZTA wanted to give itself until 2024 to draw up a business case on improving road access to the terminal, then implementing the case findings over the following three years.

But Marlborough’s transport committee wanted this moved forward, so the region’s roads were equipped for KiwiRail’s newer, larger ferries, set to be on the water from late 2024.

In its letter, the committee also

asked for a review of Blenheim’s traffic network to be included on NZTA’s shortlist, explaining it was “critical for Marlborough’s future planning”.

“Marlborough is experiencing significant growth and the effects are really being felt, particularly on State Highway 1.”

It had already petitioned NZTA to fund the review last year, after a traffic study found Blenheim was not busy enough for a bypass, but it was busy enough for another roundabout.

The study would be re-run once the council received the predicted traffic impacts from KiwiRail’s two new ferries.

Bee hotel workshop for kids The Life Education Trust Marlborough is encouraging locals to give nature a home in their garden through some fun bee workshops aimed at children aged four to 12 years next month.

The workshops will be held at Jackson Estate on Sunday, February 21 where children will

be able to build a ‘bee hotel’ out of recyclable materials.

Trust fundraiser, Charnay Van Rooyen says the workshop will be run in conjunction with J. Bush & Sons Ltd who will educate the children on the importance of bees and their role in nature.

“It’s a great community event for

us,” she says.

There will be two sessions held on the day as well as a scavenger hunt for the children to enjoy.

managed by council, again Following a significant tenure managing the Marlborough Convention Centre, Scenic Hotel Group’s lease agreement has come to an end, effective today, and the management of the centre is being handed back to Marlborough District Council, who will take over day-to-day operations.

Council Support Services manager Dean Heiford says Scenic’s decision, after running the venue for 13 years, provides an opportunity to consolidate management of the venue with the neighbouring ASB Theatre.

“I’d like to thank Scenic for their contribution and the high standard they set in running the venue. All the feedback we’ve received over the

years has been very positive, both about the venue itself and also the excellent staff and services provided

by Scenic.

“In recent years the Convention Centre, ASB Theatre and Destination Marlborough have worked closely together to attract and manage conferences, trade shows, meetings and business functions, so it’s a natural fit for the ASB Theatre to merge its operation with the Convention Centre’s.”

“I believe it’s a win-win and will result in efficiencies for both the council, which owns the Convention Centre, and the ASB Theatre.

Sensible policies needed to combat climate change

The Government must test every climate policy it intends to proceed with to make sure they are both effective and rational, National’s Climate Change spokesperson Stuart Smith says.

“National supports New Zealand playing its part to combat climate change and we acknowledge the hard work of the Climate Change Commission in producing the comprehensive analysis released today.

“The task before us is monumental. Reaching net zero emissions in 30 years is hugely ambitious for a country that earns half of its export income from the primary sector.

“New Zealand needs an effective plan that is based on practical, sensible solutions. We can’t afford to waste money on policies that won’t

make a genuine dent in emissions “The Government must have a reliable idea of how many tonnes of greenhouse gases a policy will remove from the atmosphere before deciding whether or not to fund it.

“New Zealanders will want to know whether the proposals released today are cost-effective and fair, and what the implications will be for people’s jobs and livelihoods.

“We support the approach the commission has taken by making its draft advice available for public consultation.”

Byrnebuilt takes on Braun dealership

The concept of mechanical weed control and organic soil cultivation is taking hold in New Zealand, which has a growing number of wine consumers challenging growers to move away from chemicals.

One company which goes by its slogan ‘clean around the vine without chemicals’ is Braun Maschinebau which designs and makes machinery specifically for organic soil cultivation in vineyards and orchards.

This German company is known for its premium equipment and has been around since the late 50s.

Here in Marlborough Renwick company Byrnebuilt Engineering has been doing the maintenance, repairs and fitting of Braun equipment to tractors for the past decade.

Now, owner Adrian Byrne has picked up the Australasian dealership for Braun and plans to soon start construction on a brand new showroom to display a range of equipment.

“We’ve been in the background

working with this equipment before so it’s been a good progression,” Adrian says.

“Braun exists to push away from the use of chemicals using mechanical means.”

Adrian points out the Braun Rollhacke finger weeder as an example.

“At the back is a fingerhacke which works in combination with the rollhacke. It uses these tools; one to cultivate the soil and the other to level and dress it up, and does around the stem of the vine,” he says.

“Braun also has a range of mowers which are variable. Normal traditional mowers are fixed but these work with hydraulics, so you can tell it what width you need and it can mow to the edge of the posts of vines.

“The range can go from 1.3metres up to 2.5metres in width,” he adds.

On Monday Adrian received eight tonnes of equipment from Germany, much of which was pre-sold, but is available for people to view.

gardening this week Wallys Neem Products: By Wally Richards With lockdowns all over the world we have finally received the very sought-after Neem Oil, Neem Granules and Neem Powder, not only back in NZ but after delays in the ports back in our warehouse and started distributing to all the gardeners and garden shops that have also been waiting for the return.

Like many importers, we have all been in the same boat (figuratively speaking) with many months of costly delays on receiving orders.

Good news, it is back and the Wallys Neem Granules are now a more uniform size and far better and easier to use and work with.

The writer has a very long history of association with Neem products.

I was the first writer to publish the benefits of Neem, on how it is not a poison but controls insect pests through its anti-feeding aspect and a deterrent from its smell, which is to confuse insect pests from finding their host plants.

At the same time it is not hurting beneficial predictor insects that eat the pest insects.

It was about 20 years ago I introduced the first readily available Neem Oil with the Trade Name

Suntec along with Neem granules and pellets.

As Neem Oil became popular with gardeners and retailers, other players in the market with their chemical controls for insect pests tried to (with what is now known as ‘Fake News’) make out that the oil was dangerous to the point of saying it can cause cancer and birth defects.

The main company making these claims I hear is soon to release their own brand of Neem Oil? Maybe a case of ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’.

I found also the following on the Internet: The natural insecticides, fungicides and bio-pesticides made out of Neem have many advantages.

Research studies indicate that they are not harmful to humans or animals. The pests will not develop resistance over generations while the beneficial insects like butterflies, ladybugs, etc are spared.

The soil is enriched, and Neem extracts leave no residue in the environment. Insecticide - Neem extracts have been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for use on food crops.

It is non-toxic to birds, animals,

beneficial insects or man and protects crops from over 200 of the most costly pests. As a fungicide, Neem oil is mainly used as a preventative and when disease is just starting to show.

It coats the leaf surface which in turn prevents the germination of the fungal spores. Neem oil is effective against rots, mildews, rusts, scab, leaf spot and blights.

Neem Cake, the by-product obtained in the process of cold pressing of Neem fruits and kernels is used as organic manure. It has adequate quantity of NPK in organic form for plant growth.

Neem cake typically contains about 6% neem oil and min. 4% nitrogen, 0.5 % phosphorus and 0.5% potassium.

Being a totally botanical product it contains 100% natural NPK content and other essential micro nutrients.

It is rich in both sulphur compounds and bitter limonoids.

According to research calculations, Neem cake seems to make soil more fertile due to an ingredient that blocks soil bacteria from converting nitrogenous compounds into nitrogen gas.

It is a nitrification inhibitor and

prolongs the availability of nitrogen to both short duration and long duration crops. It also acts as a natural fertilizer with pesticidal properties.

Neem cake organic manure protects plant roots from nematodes, soil grubs and white ants probably due to its content of the residual limonoids.

Neem cake is widely used in India to fertilize paddy, cotton and sugarcane.

It is harmless to earthworms - in fact earthworm populations are known to proliferate in plots treated with Neem cake.

All I can think of is that some

chemical insecticide distributors to the home garden market would prefer gardeners to buy their products rather than use a effective natural alternative.

I believe that there is sufficient documented evidence to say that Neem products are safe to use and are a great natural asset for the home gardener to combat a wide range of insect pests and plant diseases without harming themselves or the environment.

Well it nearly is, so the eight-weekend-long season of the Omaka Maize Maze attraction on Dog Point Road has begun.

On January 24, the first adventurous souls ventured in and on Sunday, a team

from the Blenheim Sun tried its luck.

The maize has multiple tracks winding though the growing corn, with two levels of difficulty and signposts with general knowledge questions on.

(These change from week to week, so you can’t cheat on your second visit.)

Up your skills It is amazing the number of people who think we need traffic lights in Blenheim. We don’t need traffic lights, roundabout are great, the traffic flows well through them. Imagine how the traffic would build up if we had traffic lights especially down Middle Renwick Rd/Nelson St. People who find roundabouts difficult need to up their driving skills. Give way to all traffic on your right and indicate which way you are leaving the roundabout. It’s not rocket science.

Ukelele time It was Natural History Week at Marlborough Museum last week and the museum’s Chief Executive Steve Austin, historian, classical musician, steam punk enthusiast and long-time lover of the ukulele, made an appearance on Sunday afternoon as his alter ego Hugo del Mar. Hugo took a ukelele workshop, working in

some percussion highlights as well.

The songs had an animal theme – the Octopus’s Garden and Wonky Donkey just two of the popular children’s songs those attending quickly picked up.

“It’s just about repetition!” he assured the group of enthusiastic – and fast – learners.

Picnic Race Day at Waterlea Looking for something a little different to enjoy on Waitangi Day Monday?

The Marlborough Racing Club is trying something a little different this long weekend by hosting the first ever Picnic Day at Waterlea Racecourse on February 8.

The incentive to run this Picnic Race Day was a request from Kevin Myers who was disappointed to learn Marlborough Racing Club did not get allocated a racing date this year.

He suggested the club run a picnic meeting and he would bring down a truck load of horses.

The meeting is designed to entertain and involve the community.

There will be four thoroughbred races and one or two harness races. Most entries will be coming from the top end of the Awatere.

The gymkhana events; walk, trot and canter, bending race are

to cater for those with a horse or pony that want to be involved and have some fun.

There will be no entry fee for any event and prizes for the winners.

The novelty relay for the sports clubs requires four runners to each in turn run 100m with a rugby ball as the baton, with the last runner pulling a sulky to the finish line with the first runner sitting in the sulky.

There will be a winner take all $200 prize.

Children can also get involved with a mini horse display, by brushing and attending to them under the guidance of Rose Butt.

Bronwyn Kerr and her team will put on a side saddle display, and Mellisa Galloway will put on a musical dressage display.

Other events for the children include a Tug of War, Golf Ball and Spoon, Sack, 3 legged races

RTS makes bold, smart move As a Crusaders fan, could Roger Tuivasa-Sheck come to the mainland, please?

The 27-year-old has announced one of the worst kept secrets in New Zealand sport - that he would like to be an All Black and will depart the New Zealand Warriors at the end of the 2021 season.

It’s a massive blow for the Warriors who not only lose their captain but also their marquee and best player.

The electric fullback owes the

Warriors nothing.

While the club has struggled to turn potential into meaningful campaigns, the fullback has been a constant shining light.

He’s a threat on attack and a respected last line of defence.

To the club’s credit, the Warriors have not stood in his way.

Will he be an All Black and where will he play will be the biggest question marks going forward.

Certainly, on the few times I

watched him play first XV rugby he was a prodigious talent. It will be interesting to see if he can replicate that at the highest level after 10 years of rugby league.

His signing is a boost to rugby in New Zealand.

Tuivasa-Sheck is in the prime of his sporting life and could be an x-factor for the All Blacks if he can make the transition. There is early talk of him shifting to centre, potentially for the Blues initially in

Super Rugby.

It would certainly help add depth to a spot where New Zealand rugby does not have a lot of depth looking towards the 2023 Rugby World Cup. It’s an exciting win-win scenario for both the player and the game, it’s another big hit for rugby league in this country.
