A LIKE NO OTHER

THE ALTHORP LITERARY FESTIVAL IS A UNIQUE CELEBRATION OF THE WRITTEN WORD THAT TAKES PLACE AGAINST THE BACKDROP OF ONE OF ENGLAND’S MOST BEAUTIFUL, PRIVATE, HISTORIC HOUSES. Indeed, it’s hard to think of a more perfect or authentic venue for one of the English summer’s most enjoyable events - for literature is central to the story of Althorp.

George John, the 2nd Earl Spencer, amassed one of the greatest private libraries in Europe. By the time of his death in 1834, 43,000 volumes of the rarest first editions sprawled through Althorp’s ground floor rooms. Today, Althorp’s strong connection with literature remains very much alive for the current Earl, Charles Spencer, is a best-selling historian.

In its first twelve years, the Festival has been privileged to host over 300 novelists, historians, comedians, actors, politicians, sportsmen and television personalities, including Boris Johnson, Alastair Campbell, Jung Chang, Julian Fellowes, Clare Balding, Sebastian Faulks, Helen Fielding, Michael Palin, Darcey Bussell, Sir Tom Stoppard, Julian Barnes, and Twiggy.

This year’s Festival continues to build on this success.

ALTHORP HOUSE WAS BUILT IN 1508, BY THE SPENCERS, FOR THE SPENCERS, AND THAT IS HOW IT HAS REMAINED FOR OVER 500 YEARS. It is set in the tranquillity of its walled, 550-acre parkland – part of the wider 13,000-acre Estate – in the heart of beautiful, unspoilt, Northamptonshire countryside.

Harry Parker

ANATOMY OF A SOLDIER

2.30PM - 3.30PM Anatomy of a Soldier is a moving, enlightening and dramatic tale of one man’s journey of survival, and the experiences of those around him.

Growing up in Wiltshire, Harry Parker joined the British Army when he was twenty-three and served in Iraq and Afghanistan, where he sustained lifechanging injuries. Anatomy of a Soldier is his debut novel.

It has been acclaimed as the best work of military fiction of its generation, but harks back down the years of Britain’s military sacrifice: Harry’s talk takes place on the 100th anniversary of the first day of the Somme.

Sir Richard Evans ART AND ARCHITECTURE IN HITLER’S THIRD REICH 11.30AM - 12.30PM Sir Richard Evans, recently described by the Daily Telegraph as ‘the greatest living historian of the Third Reich’, is Regius Professor Emeritus of History and President of Wolfson College at Cambridge University.

He has written many books including a three-volume history of Nazi Germany and, most recently, The Third Reich in History and Memory.

Evans joins the Althorp Literary Festival to present an illustrated lecture, demonstrating the contradictory nature of Nazism’s artistic policies and preferences, and to show that they went far beyond simple hostility to Modernism.

Christine L. Corton LONDON FOG: THE BIOGRAPHY 11.30AM - 12.30PM This is the brilliantly original tale of the classic London fogs, thick yellow “pea-soupers”, from the industrial age of the 19th century to the clean air legislation that ended them.

The Rape of Europa is one of Titian’s great masterpieces, a work charged with eroticism and classical mystique, behind which lies a tale as compelling as the painting itself. The story ranges from the court of King Philip II of Spain, through French revolution, to its final move to America, by the brilliant art historian Bernard Berenson. PARKING All visitors are required to park in the car park, by Althorp’s West Gate. This is located on Chinkwell Lane, on the road to Great Brington - postcode: NN7 4HQ. For further information on how to find us, please visit our website www.spencerofalthorp.com There will be a courtesy shuttlebus running from the West Gate entrance to the Stables Courtyard for festival-goers to use. Alternatively, we advise guests to allow 15 minutes to walk from the car park to the House.

VENUES Talks will be held in two venues: the main auditorium is a marquee situated on the front lawns in front of Althorp; with the more intimate State Dining Room, inside the House. Blackboards will be present on the day, stating where your chosen talk(s) will be taking place.

Althorp House OPENING 2016 ALTHORP, THE HISTORIC HOME OF THE SPENCER FAMILY SINCE 1508, IS DELIGHTED TO WELCOME VISITORS THIS SUMMER BY GUIDED TOUR. Visitors can enjoy a guided tour of the House in the company of one of Althorp’s expert tour guides, discovering the fascinating history of one of England’s most beautiful, private and historic houses.

Admire the magnificent interiors and one of Europe’s finest private collections of paintings, furniture and ceramics. Take a wander around the Gardens, the Exhibition, the Stables Gift Shop, and enjoy delicious refreshments in the Stables Café.

Althorp will be open from 11am to 5pm, with last admission to the House at 3pm, and to the Stables and Grounds at 4pm.

2016 OPENING DATES OPEN DAILY JULY: Monday 4th to Sunday 31st July, from 11am to 5pm.

OPEN DAILY AUGUST: Monday 1st to Wednesday 31st August, from 11am to 5pm.
