U

n magazine patinato, lussuoso, discreto... in un’ epoca veloce, superficiale, diciamo così (falsamente) democratica del web e dei social? Partiamo da una parola, eleganza, e prendiamo in prestito le parole di un grande regista, Alberto Lattuada: “Forse, come l’arte non si dovrebbe spiegare... la vera eleganza dovrebbe essere inconscia, naturale e ignorare le mode, anzi dovrebbe essere sottilmente “demodée”. Insomma un distillato di stile, equilibrio, sublime semplicità... Ed è semplicità la stessa definizione che ne dà la Treccani: semplicità che rivela cura e buon gusto... Ed è questo che vorremmo raccontare in queste pagine: un mondo dove uomini e donne che hanno fatto qualcosa di speciale si raccontino, come in una serata a tu per tu, dove tutti i momenti gratificanti della vita trovino un loro spazio, dal cibo alla cultura, dal cinema allo sport, al vino, ai motori, ai viaggi, raccontati però dai protagonisti più originali e attendibili. Insomma un piccolo grande mondo che si potrà incontrare in un albergo ma in tanti altri luoghi fisici e dell’anima. Primo fra tutti il mondo del Charity, che per la NERO hotel costituisce una missione irrinunciabile. Ecco perché partiamo da qualcosa che resta, che si gusta, si risfoglia, con l’idea che rimanga un pò di spazio nei giorni convulsi. Tempo e cultura sono il vero lusso della contemporaneità.

THE ESSENcE OF SUBLIME SIMPLICITY Where does an opulent, understated, glossy magazine fit into such a (allegedly) democratic fast-moving and superficial age where the web and social networks are the keywords? Let’s start from a word - elegance - as we borrow the words of the great film director, Alberto Lattuada: “Elegance, like art perhaps, needs not be explained... true elegance should be unconscious and natural, ignoring fads, even a bit old-fashioned”. In short, the essence of style, composure, sublime simplicity… And the Treccani dictionary also defines elegance as simplicity: that speaks of care and good taste. This is what we want to present through these pages: a world in which men and women who have accomplished something special talk about themselves, as if in an intimate tête-à-tête, where all of life’s most gratifying moments find space, from food to culture, up to cinema, sports, wine, cars and travel as experienced by the most original and reliable sources. A small yet vast world that we might find in a hotel, as well as in many other places, both physical and spiritual. First and foremost, the world of Charity, which represents a fundamental mission for NERO Hotels.

This is why our starting point is something that can last, that can be enjoyed, that we look at again and again, with the idea that even in the most frenetic of days…there is a little space for this, as well. Time and culture are the true luxuries of the contemporary world.

H

o il piacere e l’onore di presentare il primo numero di “Nero Lifestyle Magazine”, pensato quale speciale strumento di comunicazione del nostro NERO HOTELS, che è per me e per il Gruppo Blastness un progetto innovativo e sperimentale ideato e realizzato per dare visibilità alle strutture aderenti presso la loro clientela potenziale.

Le “keywords” su cui si basa questo progetto sono, infatti, target e relazioni.

Perché la strategia consiste nel fare sistema insieme a partner che condividono lo stesso target e che operano nell’alta e altissima gamma, un mercatotarget all’interno del quale sappiamo di poter trovare, e anche di poter sollecitare, condivisioni e affinità non solo per il prodotto ma anche per sensibilità, cultura, esperienze, gusti, interessi... per Lifestyle.

L’altro obiettivo su cui si è focalizzato Nero Hotels è lo sviluppo di un network di relazioni ad alto livello, sia nazionali che internazionali, non limitate al settore e al business alberghieri ma aperto ed esteso a tutte le realtà consimili della società nelle quali l’interesse è incentrato sul valore delle stesse relazioni e delle persone.

L’idea è quella di un network costantemente alimentato e sviluppato attraverso eventi e manifestazioni di genere diverso e in diversi contesti.

La via è così tracciata. “Nero Lifestyle Magazine” nasce, dunque, per raccontare non solo le nostre strutture ma anche il nostro mondo e i mondi che sentiamo più vicini a noi, che ci interessano, che ci incuriosiscono, che ci stupiscono e che ci attraggono.

A matter of style I have the pleasure and honor of presenting the first issue of “Nero Lifestyle Magazine”, a special communications tool for our NERO HOTELS. An innovative and experimental project for the Blastness Group and myself, designed to give visibility to participating hotels in the eyes of their potential clientele.

The “keywords” at the base of this project are, in fact, target and relations.

Because our strategy lies in creating a system with partners who share the same target and who work at the high, luxury end of a target market in which we know we will find, and even encourage, support and affinity - not only for the product but also in terms of sensitivity, culture, experience, taste, interest… in short, Lifestyle.

The other objective of Nero Hotels is the development of a network of high level relations - both national and international - which are not limited to the hospitality industry and business, but which are open and extended to any and all realities and companies whose interest is centered on the values of relationships and people. A network that is constantly fueled and developed through different types of events and meetings held in a variety of situations.

And so the die has been cast. “Nero Lifestyle Magazine” - a tool that not only talks about our hotels, but also our world and the worlds we feel closest to, that interest us, that spark our curiosity, that amaze us and attract us.

Dal 2013, Chopard sovvenziona il rinnovo dei mitici studi cinematografici di Cinecittà e patrocina il restauro di numerosi film italiani. In onore della leggenda del cinema italiano Marcello Mastroianni, Chopard ha collaborato con Cinecittà al restauro del film «Oci ciornie», del regista russo Nikita Mikhalkov, interpretato da Marcello Mastroianni e Marthe Keller. Dopo la proiezione che ha avuto luogo al Lido alla presenza della figlia, l’attrice francese Chiara Mastroianni, gli ospiti hanno partecipato ad una esclusiva cena glamour sulla terrazza del Palazzo San Clemente. In questa location veneziana da sogno, gli ospiti hanno consumato una cena italiana a lume di candela deliziati da una performance musicale che ha riproposto i brani musicali più famosi del film.

Chopard’s love story with the Seventh Art debuted in 1998, when Chopard became Official Partner of the Cannes Film Festival. Since then, Chopard has been linked with all major events of the cinema world. Since 2013, Chopard has been supporting the legendary film studios of Cinecittà in their renovation process and by supporting the restauration of great Italian movies.

In honour of Italian film legend Marcello Mastroianni, Chopard has collaborated with Cinecittà to restore the movie “Dark Eyes”, by Russian Director Nikita Mikhalkov, starring Marcello Mastroianni and Marthe Keller.

After the projection which took place at the Lido in the presence of Marcello Mastroianni’s daughter, french actress Chiara Mastroianni, the guests attended an intimate and glamorous dinner on the terrace of the San Clemente Palace.

In this dreamlike Venetian setting, the guests enjoyed a candlelit Italian dinner and a musical performance featuring the most famous film music.

Longtime friends of the House, french actresses Juliette Binoche and Ludivine Sagnier honoured the dinner with their presence along with guest of honour, Chiara Mastroianni.

L’alta orologeria nel cuore di Venezia

U

n albergo dedicato interamente al mondo degli orologi da collezione situato in posizione privilegiata, affacciato sul Canal Grande, vicino al famoso Ponte di Rialto, a 5 minuti a piedi dalla splendida Piazza San Marco.

L’Hotel presenta materiali, colori e finiture tipiche della città di Venezia, come la Pietra d’Istria e il Cocciopesto, e li sposa con l’estetica dell’alta orologeria da polso. Al piano terra un grande open space uniformato da una pavimentazione in cemento al quarzo di un caldo colore rosso accoglie reception, bar e area lounge.

Le pareti mantengono le tessiture murarie originali valorizzate dall’intervento di restauro con la stesura di calce rossa, così come sono stati recuperati e mantenuti gli originali soffitti in legno. Il tema dell’orologio viene declinato tramite interpretazioni uniche: meccanismi interni originali in eleganti boiserie nella reception; grandi lancette nell’area bar e fedeli riproduzioni di importanti orologi da collezione funzionanti.

I riferimenti al tema dell’Orologio proseguono ai piani superiori e si esprimono in elementi quali lettori badge, maniglie porte e riproduzioni fedeli di orologi posti sopra gli accessi alle camere e nei punti focali dei corridoi stessi.

Le camere dell’Hotel L’Orologio, molte delle quali si affacciano sul Canal Grande, si presentano con un

carattere decisamente moderno e minimalista ma con grande attenzione ai dettagli.

the world of haute horlogerie in the hearth of venice A hotel entirely dedicated to the world of haute horlogerie or fine watchmaking, situated in a wonderful location on the Grand Canal, close to the famous Rialto bridge and a five- minutes walk from St Mark’s Square. The hotel features typically Venetian materials, colours and finishes, such as Istrian stone and cocciopesto, and combines these with haute horlogerie aesthetics. On the ground floor the large space containing the reception, bar and lounge areas is unified by quartz concrete flooring in a warm red tone. The walls feature original wall tapestries restored and modernised with a red lime wash and the original wooden ceilings have been restored and maintained. The haute horlogerie theme is further developed by means of unique interpretations: original internal mechanisms in elegant boiseries in the reception area; large watch hands displayed in the bar area and faithful, working, reproductions of important collectors’ watches. References to the haute horlogerie theme continue on the upper floors and are manifested by elements such as the key card readers, door handles and the faithful reproductions of watches placed above the entrances to the rooms and in the focal points of the corridors. The rooms of the Hotel L’Orologio, many of which overlook the Grand Canal, are decidedly modern and minimalist in style, yet demonstrate great attention to detail.

li inizi e il rapporto con la fotografia

Da quando ho iniziato a fotografare fino ad oggi ho vissuto una vita di grandi isolamenti perchè purtoppo, o per fortuna, la fotografia è un’ossessione e quindi mi sono sempre dedicato a lei. È una specie di malattia.

Non potevo stare in camera oscura perchè da quando ero piccolo avevo paura del buio, così ho scoperto la Polaroid, una macchina che sembrava un giocattolo, ma che per me si è trasformata nel prolungamento del mio sguardo. Vivo di fotografia 24 ore su 24 ma mio nipote, i figli e il rapporto con mia mamma, chiacchierare con lei o con una persona a cui voglio bene sono il mio rifugio. Fondamentalmente però sono rifugi veloci perchè ho sempre bisogno di fotografare; è un bisogno fisico.

Processo per realizzare i mosaici e musicalità della fotografia

Prima vedo qual è il soggetto da fotografare e mi metto di fronte, decido il punto di vista e il formato, anche se il formato viene poi a pelle perchè so quando inizio ma non quando finisco. Mi metto davanti e poi dall’alto in basso, da sinistra a destra, realizzo il lavoro e la cosa importante è che non cambio nessuno

scatto, non ne tolgo nessuno e tutto è così come è stato scattato. C’è una sorta di attesa ma poi parto e faccio il mosaico. È un lavoro virtuale e istintivo legato alla musica è come se dividessi lo spazio in particelle musicali, è come essere un musicista.

Il ritratto di Johnny Depp mi ha dato visibilità internazionale e grande soddisfazione personale, facendomi capire la forza di miei ritratti nel panorama della fotografia, una foto fondamentale per me!

Il ritratto a Robert De Niro

L’aneddoto più bello è sicuramente quando ho fotografato Robert De Niro a New York al Tribeca Film Festival nel 2010. Aveva questo contratto con la Polaroid in cui era previsto che io gli facessi un ritratto. L’avrebbero usato per la comunicazione del rilancio della Polaroid prima della decisione di dedicarsi solo al digitale. All’inizio De Niro era quasi infastidito da questa cosa di appoggiare il Collector Polaroid al volto. Mi diceva che cos’è questo? Poi quando gliel’ho fatto è rimasto sbalordito, continuava ad abbracciarmi ed ha voluto assolutamente che fotografassi tutta la sua famiglia, a casa sua oltretutto.

Beginnings and relationship with photography My life since I started taking photographs has been very lonely because unfortunately, or luckily, photography is an obsession, and so it has always dominated my life. It’s a kind of illness. I couldn’t use a dark room because when I was young I was afraid of the dark, so I discovered the Polaroid camera, a device that looked like a toy, but which was transformed for me by its ability to extend my vision. I live photography 24 hours a day, but my grandson, my children and my relationship with my mother, chatting to her or someone I love, are my refuge. But essentially these are quick intervals of human contact because I need to take photographs all the time: it’s a physical necessity.

Making mosaics and the musicality of photography First, I look at the subject to be photographed and I face directly, I decide the point of view and the format, although the format is a matter of instinct, because I know when I’ll start but not when I’ll finish. I face the subject and then from top to bottom, left to right, I take the photographs; the important thing is that I don’t

change a single shot, I don’t take a single one out, and everything is just the way I shot it. There’s a kind of a wait then I start to make the mosaic. It’s a virtual, instinctive process, linked to music; it’s as if I were dividing space into musical particles, it’s like being a musician.

Portrait of Johnny Depp The portrait of Johnny Depp brought me international visibility and great personal satisfaction, showing me the strength of my portraits on the photography scene, a photo of fundamental importance for me!

Portrait of Robert De Niro The best anecdote is definitely when I photographed Robert De Niro at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York in 2010. He had this contract with Polaroid, which stated that I had to produce a portrait of him. They were going to use it for advertising in the relaunch of the Polaroid camera, before they decided to switch to only digital.

Initially, De Niro wasn’t very happy about me having to place the Polaroid Collector against his face. He said, what is this? Then when I finished it he was stunned, he kept hugging me and he insisted I had to photograph his whole family, and in his own home, too.

Galimberti nasce a Como nel 1956. Si trasferisce a Milano dove oggi vive e lavora. Negli anni ’90 diviene testimonial di Polaroid Italia e ideatore della Polaroid Collection Italiana. Continua la sua ricerca con Polaroid reinventando la tecnica del “Mosaico Fotografico” che diviene, ben presto, la tecnica per ritrarre non solo volti, ma anche paesaggi, architetture e città. Nel corso degli anni Maurizio Galimberti ha esposto in tutto il mondo, ha ricevuto numerosi premi e riconoscimenti, ha ritratto artisti ed esponenti della cultura internazionale contemporanea. Le sue opere fanno parte delle più importanti collezioni di fotografia.

Galimberti was born in Como in 1956. He moved to Milan, where he now lives and works. In the 1990s he became ambassador for Polaroid Italy and creator of the Italian Polaroid Collection. He continued his work with Polaroid by inventing the “Photographic Mosaic” technique, which soon became his method of portraying not just faces but also landscapes, architecture and cities. Over the years Maurizio Galimberti has exhibited all over the world, has received a large number of prizes and awards, and has portrayed artists and leading contemporary cultural figures. His works are included in the most important photography collections.

li italo-americani negli Stati Uniti sono attualmente 23 milioni, e sono l’etnia più numerosa all’interno del Congresso.

Molti di loro hanno contribuito a scriverne la storia, nella scienza, nella politica, nell’arte, integrando perfettamente la creatività, il gusto, e lo spirito di adattamento tutto nostrano e il pragmatismo e il dinamismo made in Usa. È proprio a tutela del patrimonio culturale italiano e per favorire le interazioni e gli scambi tra Italia ed America che nasce, nel 1975, la National Italian American Foundation (Niaf), fondazione nazionale avente sede legale a Washington D.C..

L’obiettivo principale è far sì che gli italo-americani continuino a mantenere sempre vivi i valori e le proprie tradizioni culturali. Ma non solo.

Quest’organizzazione finanzia conferenze e congressi nazionali dalle tematiche legate alla lingua e alla cultura

italiana, ed assegna inoltre borse di studio a studenti americani che andranno a studiare nel Belpaese.

Oggi la Niaf è impegnata anche in una raccolta fondi a favore delle vittime del terremoto dello scorso 24 agosto, un’iniziativa solidale fortemente voluta, proprio perché la comunità italo-americana ha l’Italia nel cuore.

Per celebrare il grande retaggio di questa numerosa community e gli obiettivi raggiunti, ogni anno nel mese di ottobre la Niaf organizza a Washington D.C, una serata di gala alla quale intervengono importanti esponenti del mondo politico, della cultura e della finanza, illustri italo-americani, e circa 3.000 persone provenienti dagli Stati Uniti e dall’Italia.

Durante questa speciale serata vengono assegnate delle onorificenze ad eminenti personalità italiane ed italo-americane che si sono particolarmente distinte nel loro ruolo professionale e civico.

Paolo Catalfamo (Presidente Niaf Italia) Lei siede nel Board americano di Niaf ed è Presidente di Niaf Italia, quanto si sente italiano, quanto americano e quanto italo-americano?

Io sono e mi sento italiano ma, avendo trascorso una buona parte della mia vita negli Stati Uniti sono profondamente legato a quel paese, a quello che ha rappresentato per la storia d’Italia e, ovviamente, ai miei amici italo-americani.

Come vede l’Italia da americano?

L’Italia da americano è il paese più bello del mondo. È il luogo che tutti vorrebbero visitare e dove vorrebbero vivere. Da americano, inoltre, si sente ancora di più l’orgoglio di essere italiano: ogni americano vorrebbe esserlo. Purtroppo al grande trasporto emotivo non si accompagna un’eguale spinta economica.

Ancora c’è molto sospetto e diffidenza sul sistema Italia da parte degli investitori americani. Penso che dovremmo farci aiutare di più dai nostri cugini italo-americani ad abbattere queste barriere e loro sarebbero ben contenti di farlo.

Quali sono gli obiettivi di Niaf Italia? Niaf Italia come favorisce questo scambio interculturale?

Niaf Italia è nata con gli obiettivi di promuovere i rapporti culturali, economici e politici fra Italia e Stati Uniti. Anche se indipendente, l’Associazione italiana è profondamente legata alla Fondazione americana e ne condivide programmi e iniziative.

La Niaf Italia vuole essere una piattaforma di eccellenze dell’Italia contemporanea da far conoscere alle giovani generazioni italo-americane.

In concreto, Niaf Italia promuove le opportunità di sviluppo economico dei propri soci negli USA e finanzia borse di studio in selezionate università americane per giovani meritevoli.

Negli ultimi anni anche Niaf Italia organizza un Gala in cui vengono assegnati degli importanti riconoscimenti.

A chi e perchè?

La prima edizione del Niaf Italia Awards si è tenuta lo scorso anno a Roma.

I premiati sono stati: il Ministro degli Interni, Angelino Alfano, il Presidente di Sace, Amb. Giovanni Castellaneta, il Presidente di Conde Nast Italia, Giampaolo Grandi, la Presidente di ENI, Emma Marcegaglia ed il Guru dell’enterpreneurship, Karl Schramm. Tutti i premiati, nei loro rispettivi ambiti, hanno svolto un ruolo fondamentale nel promuovere la vicinanza fra Italia e USA. La stessa motivazione accomunerà anche i premiati di quest’anno che sono: il Ministro dello Sviluppo Economico, Carlo Calenda, il Presidente dell’Associazione Nazionale Magistrati, Piercamillo Davigo, il Presidente di Finmeccanica/ Leonardo, Giovanni De Gennaro, il Presidente della Camera Nazionale della Moda, Carlo Capasa, l’attrice Valeria Golino e l’imprenditore Francesco Panella.

Joseph Del Raso (Chairman Niaf USA) Italiani in America. Cosa rappresentano dal punto di vista economico, politico e culturale per gli Stati Uniti?

Essendo una realtà di 23 milioni di persone gli italoamericani rappresentano un gruppo molto influente, sia dal punto di vista economico che politico.

La cultura italiana è venerata negli Stati Uniti forse più che in qualsiasi altra parte del mondo.

Inoltre la cultura ed il pensiero italiano e degli italiani sono stati fondamentali nella costruzione dello Stato e del modello sociale americani.

Quanto è importante il made in Italy per la cultura americana?

Il made in Italy è ormai sinonimo di lusso e di

lifestyle. Sempre di più la cultura americana è permeata dal made in Italy, dal cibo, alla moda, alle automobili. Senza dubbio il made in Italy in America oggi rappresenta lo stile di vita sano, intelligente e di lusso.

Quanto forte è il desiderio di viaggiare in Italia per conoscere ed esplorare la terra e la cultura dei propri avi?

Fortissimo. È una sorta di pellegrinaggio che ogni italo-americano vuole compiere, non solo per rendere onore agli sforzi dei loro avi e alle fatiche dell’emigrazione, ma anche per riscoprire l’orgoglio di far parte del paese più bello del mondo.

Andrea Delfini (Vice-Presidente Niaf Italia e Presidente NERO Hotels) Un Vice-Presidente di Niaf Italia che si occupa di turismo, perchè?

Mi sono avvicinato a Niaf, grazie al Presidente di Niaf Italia, Prof. Paolo Catalfamo, che per primo è convinto del potenziale turistico del nostro Paese nei confronti degli americani e ancora di più di coloro che lo hanno nel cuore per le loro origini.

Lavorando nel settore alberghiero noi scopriamo ogni giorno delle strutture davvero uniche, ricche di storia, di tradizioni, di cultura; strutture dove non solo si soggiorna ma dove di vive una esperienza autentica. love for italy There are currently 23 million Italian-Americans in the United States, and they are the best-represented ethnic group in the Congress. Many of them have helped to write the country’s history, in science, politics and the arts, perfectly integrating their uniquely Italian creativity, taste and spirit of adaptation with the USA’s trademark pragmatism and dynamism.

The National Italian American Foundation (Niaf), based in Washington, D.C., was founded in 1975 to protect the Italian cultural heritage and promote interaction and exchanges between Italy and America. The main aim is to ensure that Italian-Americans continue to keep their own cultural traditions and values alive. But its mission does not stop there.

This organisation finances national conferences and congresses on topics related to Italian language and culture, and also awards scholarships to American students who will be studying in Italy. The Niaf is currently engaged in fundraising for the victims of the earthquake of 24 August, a mission that is undertaking with great commitment because of the Italian-American community’s strong love of Italy. To celebrate this large community’s impressive heritage and the objectives achieved, in October every year the Niaf organises a gala evening in Washington, D.C. attended by leading personalities from the worlds of politics, culture and finance, famous Italian-Americans and about 3,000 people from the United States and Italy.

During this special evening, awards are presented to eminent Italian and Italian-American personalities who have been particularly outstanding in their professional and civic roles. In the past, the Niaf has honoured personalities including Antonin Scalia, the first Italian-American Judge of the United States Supreme Court, Frank Sinatra, Joe Di Maggio, Lee Iacocca, Liza Minnelli, Luciano Pavarotti and Sofia Loren. The gala, headed

by Niaf Chairman Joseph Del Raso and Niaf President John Viola, also features a charitable auction in which Nero Hotels and its holidays play a leading role. Italia; how much do you feel Italian, how much American and how much Italian-American?

I am and feel Italian, but since I’ve spent a large proportion of my life in the United States I have a deep bond with the country, with it has meant for the history of Italy and, obviously, with my Italian-American friends.

As an American, what is your view of Italy?

Americans see Italy as the most beautiful country in the world.

It’s the place they’d all like to visit and where they’d all like to live. What’s more, as an American you are even prouder to be Italian: it’s something every American would like to be.

Unfortunately, this emotional bond is not reflected in business relations. The Italian system is still viewed with a great deal of suspicion and mistrust by many American investors. I think we need to get our Italian-American cousins to do more to help us to break down these barriers, and they’d be very happy to do so.

What are the aims of Niaf Italia? How does Niaf Italia promote this intercultural exchange?

Niaf Italia was founded with the aim of promoting cultural, economic and political relations between Italy and the United States. Although it’s independent, the Italian Association has very close ties to the American foundation and shares the same programmes and projects. Niaf Italia sets out to be a platform for the excellences of contemporary Italy, with which the younger generations of Italian-Americans should be familiar.

In concrete terms, Niaf Italia promotes opportunities for economic growth for its members in the USA and finances scholarships at selected American universities for deserving young people.

In the last few years, Niaf Italia has also organised a Gala during which major awards have been presented. To whom and why?

The first edition of the Niaf Italia Awards was held in Rome last year. The award-winners were the Ministry of the Interior, Angelino Alfano, the Chairman of Sace, Amb. Since there are 23 million of them, Italian-Americans are a very influential group, both economically and politically.

Italian culture is greatly venerated in the United States, perhaps more than anywhere else in the world. What’s more, Italian culture and thought and Italian people were fundamental in constructing the American state and social model.

How important are Italian products to American culture?

Italian goods have made themselves synonymous with luxury and a high-class lifestyle. American culture is increasingly permeated with Italian inputs, from food to fashion and cars.

Without a doubt, in America today Italian products stand for a healthy, intelligent, exclusive lifestyle.

How strong is people’s desire to visit Italy to get to know and explore the land and culture of their ancestors?

Very strong. It’s a kind of pilgrimage every Italian-American wants to make, not just to pay their respects to their ancestors’ hard work and the challenges they faced when emigrating, but even more to enjoy the pride that comes from belonging to the most beautiful country in the world.

Sede del Casinò di Venezia, il casinò più antico al mondo che occupa l’ultimo piano dell’edificio, il Palazzo apre le sue impareggiabili sale del piano nobile per l’organizzazione di cene, meeting, convegni e feste.

na bellezza disarmante le ha permesso di essere scoperta, a 16 anni, da un’agenzia di Bucarest, in Romania, il suo paese natale, ma è la bravura di Catrinel Marlon, ad averla condotta dove si trova ora, in piena ascesa tra le attrici italiane nell’olimpo del cinema.

Catrinel, classe 1985, padre italiano e madre romena, aveva il futuro segnato. Come il papà, campione nei 400 metri ad ostacoli, stava diventando atleta olimpica nella stessa disciplina, finché una gita scolastica a Bucarest, quando era sedicenne, le cambiò la vita e i sogni, ed iniziò così a lavorare nel mondo della moda. “ Cercare di migliorare il mondo e' un obbligo di tutti Venezia: come è stata la tua prima volta?

Sono stata a Venezia la prima volta, al Festival del Cinema, quattro anni fa, con il mio primo film “La città ideale” ed è stata un’esperienza unica.

Ricordo ancora l’emozione travolgente che mi faceva battere forte il cuore. Riuscivo a malapena a camminare sul red carpet.

Cosa si prova a ricevere un premio così importante?

Il Premio Kineo è un riconoscimento che scaturisce da un giudizio formulato dal pubblico insieme alla giuria. Ricevere un apprezzamento così importante mi rende felice, ma soprattutto grata per la fiducia che hanno riposto in me.

Quando ti sei accorta che volevi fare l’attrice?

Non ho mai desiderato fare questo mestiere, perché da piccola sognavo di fare la fotografa. Poi, il successo nell’atletica, seguendo le orme di famiglia, e poi, per caso, è iniziata la mia carriera come modella.

Cinque anni fa, in un periodo in cui ero molto giù, il regista Federico Brugia è stato colpito dal mio particolare stato d’animo. Cercava una ragazza per il suo primo lungometraggio, ‘Tutti i rumori del mare’, per il ruolo di una giovane bipolare.

Mi ha detto che dovevo essere me stessa, perché in quella fase della mia vita ero perfetta per quella parte.

Mi è piaciuto moltissimo, e l’aiuto che lui mi ha dato mi ha portato a quello che sono diventata oggi.

L’amore che ho trovato in questo mestiere non solo mi ha fatto superare il problema di allora ma, soprattutto, mi ha regalato una dimensione diversa.

Una nuova vita insomma.

Qual era la tua passione?

Ho sempre avuto una forte passione per l’arte in generale. L’ho approfondita negli studi, con la pittura e la fotografia. Ma mai avrei immaginato di fare l’attrice. Ora che lo sono, ho la consapevolezza di essere alle prime armi e di avere ancora molto da imparare. Mi piace tantissimo lavorare sul set, ma anche fare la spettatrice.

Ammetto che le mie serate ideali sono quelle passate a casa, guardando vecchi film mentre sono a letto.

Finora, tra i ruoli che hai interpretato, quale ti è rimasto nel cuore?

Ho avuto parti molto diverse tra loro, ed ogni volta mi sono divertita ad entrare nella pelle del personaggio, nel suo vissuto. Quello che mi ha toccata di più è senza dubbio il ruolo di Giulietta nel film di Leone Pompucci, perché lei era una giovane madre senza tetto, “un angelo ribelle”, come mi definiva il regista sul set.

Preferisci il cinema italiano o statunitense?

Sono diversi tra loro. Il cinema italiano ha fatto la storia, e per me è quello più emozionante, vero.

Prima ancora di quello americano amo tantissimo il cinema francese. Oggi, con l’evoluzione cinematografica che è in atto, il concetto di cinema è più globale: ci sono bellissimi film stranieri e registi giovani di grande talento.

Hai preso parte anche a ‘Donne’, la serie ispirata al testo di Camilleri. Conoscevi questo scrittore?

Ho comprato il primo libro di Camilleri 16 anni fa quando sono arrivata in Italia per la prima volta.

Devo dire che per uno straniero la scrittura, ma soprattutto il dialetto, non sono facili anche se conosci la lingua. Sono davvero felice di aver avuto l’opportunità di prendere parte ad un progetto così importante come quello di “Donne”. Ringrazio ancora la produzione e il regista Emanuele Imbucci per avermi scelta.

Se dovessi esprimere un desiderio, quale sarebbe?

Meno cattiverie nel mondo e che il futuro ci riservi più serenità e pace. Cercare di migliorare il mondo è un obbligo di tutti. Io nel mio piccolo mi occupo di bambini orfani e collaboro con la Onlus ‘The Children for Peace’. Tra qualche mese andrò in Uganda per un loro progetto. Sono allo stesso tempo emozionata e felice.

What does that mean for you?

Venice: what was your first time like?

I came to the Venice Film Festival for the first time four years ago, with my first film, “The Ideal City”, and it was a unique experience. I can still remember how excited I was, and how my heart raced. I only just managed to walk along the red carpet.

What is it like to receive such a major award?

The Kineo Award is assigned by the audience and jury together.

It makes me very happy to receive such an important award, but above all grateful for the trust they have shown in me.

When did you realise you wanted to be an actress?

I’ve never wanted this to be my career, because when I was a little girl I dreamed of being a photographer. Then came success in athletics, in the family tradition, and then, by chance, my modelling career began. Five years ago, at a time when I was very unhappy, the director Federico Brugia was struck by my specific mental state. He was looking for a girl for his first full-length feature film, ‘ Tutti i rumori del mare’ (‘All the Sounds of the sea’), for the role of a young girl with bipolar disorder. He told me I only had to be myself, because at that time of my life I was perfect for the part. I really enjoyed it, and the help he gave me brought me to what I am today. Not only did the love I’ve found for this profession get me through my difficulties at that time but, above all, has opened out a new dimension for me. A new life, in fact.

What was your guiding passion?

I’ve always had a strong passion for art in general. I pursued it at school, and through painting and photography. But I never imagined I might become an actress. Now that I am one, I know I’m just a beginner and I’ve still got a lot to learn. I love working on set, but I adore watching films, too. I admit that my ideal evenings are the ones I spend at home, watching old films in bed.

So far, of the roles you’ve played, which has stayed with you the most?

The parts I’ve played have been very different, and every time I’ve enjoyed getting under the character’s skin, into her experience. The one that touched me the most was definitely the role of Giulietta in Leone Pompucci’s film, because she was a homeless young mother, a “rebel angel”, as the director described me on the set.

Do you prefer Italian or American films?

They’re very different. Italian films have shaped history, and for me they’re more moving, more true. I like French films even more than US ones. Today, with the changes taking place in the world of film, the whole concept has become more global: there are some fantastic foreign films and very talented young directors.

You also took part in ‘Donne’ [‘Women’], the series inspired by Camilleri’s book. Did you already know this author’s work?

I bought Camilleri’s first book 16 years ago when I came to Italy for the first time. I must say that for a foreigner the writing, and especially the dialect, is not easy, even if your Italian is good.

I’m really delighted to have had the opportunity to take part in a big project like “Donne”. I’d like to thank the producers and the director Emanuele Imbucci again for choosing me.

If you had to make a wish, what would it be?

Less evil in the world and more serenity and peace for the future. We all have a duty to try to make the world a better place. In my small way, I support orphan children and I help the charity ‘The Children for Peace’. I’ll be going to Uganda for one of their projects in a few months’ time. I’m both excited and happy about it.

i genitori bolognesi ma nata e cresciuta a Roma, Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini non proviene da una famiglia produttrice di vino, e per anni ha lavorato nel mondo del cinema, come produttrice, e nel settore farmaceutico.

Affascinata dal mondo della campagna e del vino, si appassiona talmente tanto a questa attività da dedicarvisi completamente con successive acquisizioni di Cantine e Tenute: Caparzo e Altesino a Montalcino, Borgo Scopeto nel Chianti Classico, Doga delle Clavule in Maremma.

In pochi anni il suo rapporto con il vino è diventato avvincente, passionale, e il completo coinvolgimento nella sua attività la innamora al punto tale da emozionarsi a ogni vendemmia, a ogni degustazione.

E la passione porta al successo con prodotti di eccellenza: molti i premi ed i riconoscimenti, basti citare che nel 2014 il Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli 2008 di Altesino è stato annoverato da Wine Spectator, la “Bibbia del vino”, fra i 100 top wine del mondo aggiudicandosi il punteggio di 95/100.

Abbiamo chiesto ad Elisabetta cosa significa essere una donna imprenditrice nel settore del vino: “è una grande soddisfazione - ci confessa - anche perché fino a vent’anni fa era un settore complicato, prevalentemente maschile e quindi un po’ “ostile” al gentil sesso. Ora è di certo più semplice.

Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini: a wine-maker’s success story “Women have helped to improve the quality and image of Italian wine worldwide, with their sensitive, creative approach” Born and raised in Rome but with parents originally from Bologna, Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini does not come from a winemaking family, and for years she worked in film, as a producer, and in the pharmaceutical industry. Fascinated by the rural and wine production world, she fell so much in love with the business that she decided to turn to it full-time, purchasing a series of Wineries and Estates: Caparzo and Altesino at Montalcino, Borgo Scopeto in the Chianti Classico area and Doga delle Clavule in the Maremma country. In just a few years her relationship with wine became passionate and all-consuming, and she threw herself heart and soul into the business, feeling an irresistible excitement at every vintage and every tasting.

And her passion brought her success, with outstanding pro82

ducts: she has received many prizes and awards - for example, in 2014 Wine Spectator, the “Wine Bible”, named her Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli 2008 from the Altesino estate amongst the world’s 100 top wines, with a score of 95/100.

We asked Elisabetta what it means to be a woman in charge in the wine industry. “It brings me great satisfaction,” she confesses to us, “especially since until twenty years ago this was a complicated business, mainly run by men and therefore with some hostility towards women. ratello Country Resort si trova al centro di un tenuta faunistico-venatoria di 320 ettari, ricca di boschi, olivi e panorami unici e suggestivi. In un Atto dell’8 novembre 1044, reperito presso l’Archivio di Stato di Pisa, già si fa cenno al territorio di Pratello.

Da allora, famiglie illustri, che hanno contribuito a fare grande la Toscana, hanno posseduto questa tenuta. La villa è stata realizzata intorno al 1650, lo splendido giardino rinascimentale è stato riportato ai fasti iniziali da un sapiente lavoro di ristrutturazione. Pittura Analitica: la rinascita di un’arte

N

ata con l’uomo, come l’uomo anche la pittura deve continuamente lottare per la propria sopravvivenza, minacciata da nuovi linguaggi, nuove forme di cultura e di intrattenimento.

Oggi la sfida che la pittura affronta è la diffusione del digitale, ma alla fine degli anni Sessanta la situazione era molto più critica. In quel decennio rivoluzionario, nacquero movimenti che facevano apparire la pittura come un linguaggio non più adatto a leggere i tempi: il Cinetismo, l’Arte Povera, il Concettuale. Eppure in Italia, Francia e Germania, lavoravano nel silenzio moltissimi pittori.

Il loro scopo era studiare la pittura come linguaggio, analizzarlo nei suoi elementi base (il colore,

la tela, il telaio, la pennellata eccetera) e ridargli dignità e autonomia: era nata la Pittura Analitica.

Quegli artisti furono ospitati nei principali musei europei, alla “Biennale” di Venezia, ai “documenta” di Kassel, ma solo negli ultimi dieci anni la loro importanza è stata rivalutata dagli storici dell’arte e dal mercato.

In queste pagine potete notare le opere di alcuni di questi pittori. È pittura che non rappresenta nient’altro che se stessa, gesti minimali e al contempo raffinati, opere che sfidano la percezione e che si presentano per quello che sono, non rimandi a oggetti o volti o paesaggi, non provocazioni che stancano, bensì superfici dipinte, elaboratissime e al contempo semplicissime.

Analytic Painting: the Rebirth of an Art Born with humankind, just like humankind painting constantly has to struggle for its own survival, threatened by new languages, new forms of culture and entertainment.

Digitalization is the challenge that painting has to face today, but at the end of 1960s the situation was much more critical. In that revolutionary decade, new movements arose and made painting seem like a language no longer able to look through those times: Kinetic Art, Arte Povera and Conceptual Art. Nevertheless, in Italy, France and Germany many painters were still working in silence. Their aim was to study painting as a language, analyze it in its basic elements (color, canvas, frame, brush stroke) and give its dignity and 104

independence back: Analytic Painting was born.

Those artists were hosted in the biggest European museum, at the Venice Biennale, at the “documenta” in Kassel, but only in the last decade their importance has been revalued by art historians as well as the art market. In these pages, you’ll find some of these authors’ works. This paintings do not represent anything but themselves, both minimal and extremely refined actions, works that challenge perception and stand for what they are, without reminding of other objects, faces or landscapes, avoiding the boredom of provocation, being nothing more than painted surfaces, elaborate and simple at once.

iutare i bambini che soffrono, in zone della Terra altrimenti dimenticate.

Restituire loro la speranza di un futuro e la voglia di sognare, attraverso progetti concreti volti al miglioramento della scolarizzazione e della salute dei più piccoli ma anche delle loro famiglie. Questi piccoli miracoli, e molto altro, è opera di Children for Peace, ONG italiana fondata con lo scopo di portare una luce di speranza ai bambini orfani e malati di Hiv attraverso l’istruzione e la sensibilizzazione su argomenti come l’Hiv, la droga.

“L’idea di dar vita a questa Onlus è nata 11 anni fa, durante una colazione con Debbie Mace, Lamia Biancolini e Liuba Rizzoli, in cui è stata espressa la volontà comune di aiutare, di cercare di fare qualcosa, piccolo ma efficace”, ha spiegato Massimo Leonardelli, membro della Presidenza e tra i co-fondatori, con Debbie Mace. Children for Peace attualmente opera in Mali, Ethiopia, Uganda, Colombia, sul territorio palestinese, e in aiuto dei rifugiati siriani in Libano.

A tal proposito vengono organizzati ogni anno eventi di beneficienza, veri e propri gala in cui la solidarietà incontra il glamour, a livello internazionale.

Molti i testimonial famosi che hanno prestato il volto a Children: da Anastasia lo scorso anno, a Linda Evangelista, fino a Michael Bolton.

Quanto raccolto durante questi eventi, insieme alle donazioni di privati ed aziende, spesso messe in moto grazie ad attrici e cantanti che, condividendo lo scopo creano tam tam sui social network, contribuisce a costruire scuole e strutture sanitarie, che vengono costantemente monitorate dalla presidenza. “Prima di fondare questa Onlus ero ben consapevole della situazione critica che vivono i bambini di queste aree del mondo - ha dichiarato il Presidente Debbie Mace - ed è così difficile essere lontani e non poter far nulla per migliorare la loro vita. I bambini sono il futuro.

E il loro futuro deve interessare tutti, nel bene e nel male”. “Ogni volta che mi reco in Etiopia ci lascio un pezzo di cuore”, racconta Massimo Leonardelli.

“Un giorno stavamo giocando con i bimbi dell’orfanotrofio con una palla fatta di stoffa.

Ho chiesto un piccolo break ed abbiamo fatto il giro di Addis Abeba per cercare un pallone vero.

Una volta trovato, tornati all’orfanotrofio i bambini hanno avuto una reazione inaspettata e bella: toccavano la palla come fosse un oggetto strano, così strano che è stato conservato ed abbiamo continuato con la palla di stoffa”.

La prossima sfida è attuare campagne a largo raggio a cui si può partecipare con un click, e con piccole donazioni, ma soprattutto agire anche in Uganda, con le suore comboniane, e in Italia, aiutando le famiglie del Belpaese che chiedono aiuto ai vari enti religiosi.

the CHILDREN’S FUTURE IS IN OUR HANDS

Helping suffering children, in parts of the Earth that are otherwise forgotten. Giving them back the hope of a future and the strength to dream, through small projects intended to improve the educational opportunities and the health of the children and their families too. These minor miracles, and much more, are the work of Children for Peace, an Italian NGO founded to bring a ray of hope to orphaned and HIV-positive children through education and awareness-raising on topics such as HIV and drug abuse. “I had the idea of founding this charity 11 years ago, during a lunch with Debbie Mace, Lamia Biancolini and Liuba Rizzoli, where we found we all wanted to help, to do something small but effective,” explained Massimo Leonardelli, member of the Board and a co-founder with Debbie Mace. Children for Peace currently operates in Mali, Ethiopia, Uganda and Colombia, in the Palestinian territory and helping Syrian refugees in Lebanon. To support its operations, every year it organises charitable events, real galas where glamour and solidarity meet, at the international level.

Many famous spokespeople have given their faces to Children, from Anastasia last year to Linda Evangelista and Michael Bolton. The sums raised by these events, together with donations from private and corporate givers, often inspired by

actors and singers who work for the common aim of creating a buzz on social media, help to build schools and health facilities, constantly monitored by the Board. “Before I founded this Charity I was well aware of the critical situations in which children in these parts of the world live,” Chairwoman Debbie Mace states, “and it is so difficult to be a long way away and not be able to do anything to improve their lives. Children are the future. And their future must concern us all, in good times and bad.” “Whenever I go to Ethiopia I leave a piece of my heart there,” Massimo Leonardelli tells us. “One day, we were playing with the children at the orphanage with a ball made of rags. I asked for a short break and we went and looked all over Addis Abeba for a real football. When we found one and got back to the orphanage, the children reacted in a way we didn’t expect: they touched the football as if it were a strange object, so strange that it was carefully conserved and we kept on playing with the rag ball.” The next challenge is to activate far-reaching campaigns that people can take part in with a click, and with small donations, but above all to extend our operations in Uganda, with the Comboni Missionary Sisters, and in Italy, helping the families here who turn to the various religious organisations for assistance.

Che significato ha per te la moda?

Per me, sin da bambina, la moda è stata una via di fuga. Un mondo immaginario senza confini.

Oggi, invece la moda è qualcosa che mi dà forza in tutto quello che faccio.

Quando hai deciso di diventare stilista e di creare un tuo marchio?

La passione per la moda c’è sempre stata, fin da che ho ricordi. Vivere a Milano, la capitale della moda, mi ha dato lo slancio finale per riuscire a realizzare il mio sogno di bambina: quello di diventare una fashion designer.

Qual è la tua idea di eleganza?

L’eleganza è porsi in un modo che permette di rimanere veri e di mostrare realmente chi si è.

Qualcosa che va oltre l’abito o un gioiello prezioso.

Che tipo di donna è quella che veste Winonah?

Una donna con una mentalità internazionale, che riesce ad apprezzare la qualità, e investe in capi che potrà indossare anche nelle stagioni a venire.

Quali sono i must have per questo autunno - inverno?

Per la FW16, il velluto è la strada da percorrere.

In assoluto un must di questo inverno è lo shearling coat come quello presente nella mia collezione.

A livello cromatico, il burgundy sarà il protagonista.

What does fashion mean to you?

Ever since I was a little girl, fashion has always been a way of escaping for me. An imaginary world, without frontiers.

However, fashion is now something that reinforces me and gives me strength in everything I do.

When did you decide to become a designer and create your own brand?

I’ve always had a passion for fashion, as long as I can remember.

Living in Milan, the fashion capital, finally persuaded me to make my childhood dream of becoming a fashion designer come true.

What is your idea of elegance?

Elegance means presenting yourself in a way that lets you remain authentic and show who you really are. Something that goes beyond clothes or valuable jewels.

What kind of woman wears Winonah?

A woman with an international mentality, who appreciates quality and invests in clothes she’ll be able to wear for years to come.

What are the must haves for this autumn-winter?

For FW16, velvet is the mainstream fabric. One absolute must for this winter is the shearling coat, like the one in my collection. In terms of colour, burgundy will predominate.

AUDEMARS PIGUET GOLF TROPHY, SPORT AND GLAMOUR ON TOUR IN ITALY The crystal-clear sea and glamorous appeal of Porto Cervo provided the backdrop for a particularly important event for golflovers: the Audemars Piguet Golf Trophy, which the Nero Hotel Group has been sponsoring for several years by offering exclusive holidays at the group’s hotels as prizes for competition winners.

Consisting of four tournaments on different courses beginning at Golf Club Trieste on 5 June, the event moved on 23 and 24 July to the Pevero Golf Club in Sardinia, for a weekend of enjoyment.

On Saturday, Audemars Piguet presented the new Royal Oak Offshore Diver Chronographs, entertaining its guests at the Billionaire Club in Porto Cervo for a dinner provided by the exclusive Assunta Madre restaurant. The evening’s dress code was elegant but with a touch of colour, in honour of the bright hues featured on the new Royal Oak models presented, in blue, yellow and orange and the musical accompaniment was remixed by Amber Le Bon, daughter of Duran Duran’s lead singer and special guest of the evening. On Sunday, the focus was on the Pevero course for the golf competition, to which international customers from the United Kingdom and Spain were invited.

The surprise of the day was the participation of Italian pro Renato Paratore, the nation’s only representative amongst the

group chosen by Audemar Piguet as ambassadors for the famous Swiss watch brand, which includes champions of the calibre of Danny Willett, Enrik Stenson, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Lee Westwood, Louis Oosthuizen and many others.

All participants also had the opportunity to challenge Paratore in a nearest to the pin competition at 156 metre, par-3 tenth hole. In the end, the best ball was that of the Italian master himself, with a distance of 45 centimetres. Out of the 132 players only 12 had the good luck to claim a better net score than Paratore, and to win an autographed ball and the right to take part in the draw for a Magnum bottle of Campari. NERO Hotels presented the winner of the first category, Nicola Pierini, with a holiday at Rome’s Hotel Capo d’Africa.

Quando è iniziata la tua passione per la musica?

Ho iniziato a cantare non appena ho imparato a parlare; a livello professionale la mia carriera nella musica è cominciata che avevo circa 16 anni.

A chi ti sei ispirato all’inizio?

Ci sono così tanti artisti, o meglio, così tante canzoni che mi hanno ispirato. Michael Jackson ha avuto una grande influenza su di me. Ricordo che ascoltavo senza tregua le sue canzoni.

Nutro grande ammirazione, però, per Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles.

Chi è il tuo artista di riferimento ora? È davvero difficile scegliere, perché oggigiorno ci sono così tanti artisti dotati, mi piacciono molto Bruno Mars, Kelly Clarckson, Lana del Rey, Pink, Rihanna.

Quale cantante italiano ti piace?

Giorgia. La sua tecnica è assolutamente pazzesca.

When did your passion for music start?

I started to sing as soon as I learnt to talk, but at the professional level my musical career began when I was about 16.

Who were your initial inspirations?

There are so many singers, or rather so many songs, that have inspired me. Michael Jackson was a major influence.

I remember that I used to listen to his songs non-stop. But I also greatly admire Etta James, Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles.

Who’s the artist you respect the most today?

It’s really difficult to choose, because nowadays there are so many gifted artists, but I love Bruno Mars, Kelly Clarkson, Lana del Rey, Pink and Rihanna.

Are there any Italian singers you like?

Giorgia. Her technique is just amazing. I’ve always been attracted to deep, powerful voices.

e è vero che siamo noi a dare valore alle cose, è anche vero che, da un naufragio, solo quello che vale torna davvero a galla.

Lo ha scritto Giorgio Faletti, mentre, al di là della sublimazione (esigenze di copione), il film Titanic ha mostrato quanto sia complessa e difficile la sfida del recupero dei relitti nelle profondità dei mari, siano l’Atlantico o il Tirreno. Sul quale facciamo rotta verso l’Elba per fare rivivere la storia dell’affondamento del piroscafo a vapore Polluce e dei cacciatori di tesori.

Costruito nel 1839 a Le Havre per la compagnia De Luchi-Rubattino di Genova insieme all’immancabile gemello Castore (potenza della mitologia), il Polluce entrò in servizio tra Napoli e Marsiglia il 21 aprile 1841 ma neppure due mesi dopo, alle 23.45 del 17 giugno affondò in soli 15 minuti, dopo essere stato speronato, in un inspiegabile incidente, dal piroscafo

napoletano Mongibello, a 2,9 km da Capo Calvo, 4 miglia dalla costa fra Capoliveri e Porto Azzurro.

Sul Polluce viaggiavano nobili con ingenti somme di denaro e preziosi, per cui si fece anche l’ipotesi di simpatizzanti mazziniani, - che tuttavia non sembra avere fondamento - a caccia di quell’oro per finanziare la causa. L’armatore Raffaele Rubattino tentò di recuperare il relitto. Lo fece legare con catene agganciate a quattro rimorchiatori, ma il tentativo fallì, e con esso la società si trovò in gravi difficoltà finanziarie.

Dopo 150 anni di oblìo il relitto fu localizzato a 103 metri di profondità dalla Comex di Marsiglia (nel 1995 ) ma fini lì. Andò meglio quando cacciatori inglesi di tesori (loro sì bene informati) furono scoperti all’opera dai Carabinieri del Nucleo Tutela Patrimonio Culturale di Firenze che appurarone il furto di preziosi e i danni al relitto, squassato da una benna calata sullo scafo, quasi tutto di legno.

Galeotta fu la truffa che scambiò il relitto del britannico Glenlogan (trasporto di alluminio) affondato nel 1916 (ma in Sicilia), con il Polluce, del quale si era persa memoria. I Carabinieri recuperarono nel 2002 gioielli, monete d’argento e d’oro (di Spagna, Francia e Regni d’Italia) prima che fossero battuti all’asta a Londra.

Da allora è stato un susseguirsi di campagne per il recupero - come raccontano Pamela Gambogi della Soprintendenza Archeologia della Toscana e Sergio Bargagliotti, dello Studio Archeologico Tethys -

eseguito grazie al primo intervento al mondo con le tecnologie dell’immersione in saturazione.

Alle costose operazioni hanno partecipato la Marina Militare con Nave Anteo e i suoi palombari e con il Gruppo Subacquei (Comsubin) “Teseo Tesei” con Pegaso, sistema robotico che lavora fino a 2mila metri di profondità.

Gli oggetti recuperati ci raccontano ora la storia della nave (testimone della fase di transizione dalla propulsione da vela a motore), del suo equipaggio e dei passeggeri.

Favoloso, come nelle migliori tradizioni, il tesoro: 10.000 monete d’argento, 78 d’oro, 35 pezzi d’oreficeria, da aggiungere al bottino restituito dalle Autorità britanniche: 1500 monete d’argento, 72 d’oro e 80 pezzi d’oreficeria.

Si auspica che negli anni futuri la Soprintendenza Archeologia della Toscana possa far concludere la campagna di ricerca su quello che resta del relitto.

THE TREASURE SHIP THE STORY OF A FORGOTTEN WRECK It may be true that it is we who decide the value of things, but it is equally true that the only things to resurface after a shipwreck are the things of value.

I am quoting Giorgio Faletti on this, while, leaving sublimation (demanded by the script) aside, the film Titanic proved the complexity and difficulty of raising wrecks from the depth of the sea, whether it be the Atlantic or the Tyrrhenian.

On this premise, let us set sail for Elba to recount the tale of the sinking of the steamer Polluce and the treasure hunters.

Built in 1839 at Le Havre for the shipping company De LuchiRubattino of Genoa together with its inseparable twin Castore (the two names are the Italian versions of Castor and Pollux, mythological patrons of sailors), the Polluce went into service between Naples and Marseilles on 21 April 1841 but not even two months later, at a quarter to midnight on 17 June, she sank in just 15 minutes, after being rammed in an inexplicable accident by the Neapolitan steamer Mongibello, 2.9 km from Capo Calvo, 4 miles from the coast, between Capoliveri and Porto Azzurro. The Polluce was carrying aristocrats with huge sums of money and gems, so the apparently unfounded hypothesis was 152

put forward that supporters of Italian independence, supporters of Mazzini, had sunk her in the quest for gold to finance their cause.

Her owner Raffaele Rubattini attempted to raise the wreck.

He attached chains from her to four tugs, but the attempt failed, leaving the company in serious financial difficulties. Forgotten for 150 years, the wreck was located at a depth of 103 metres

by Comex of Marseilles (in 1995), but nothing else was done.

Events took a different turn when British treasure-hunters (always well informed) were discovered at work by Carabinieri from the Florence Heritage Protection Corps, who found that gems had been stolen and the wreck had been damaged, shattered by a grab lowered onto the hull, made almost entirely of wood. The affair involved the fraudulent attempt to pass the wreck off as that of the British ship Glenlogan (a freighter carrying aluminium) which went down in 1916 (in Sicily), instead of the long-forgotten Polluce.

In 2002 the Carabinieri recovered jewellery and silver and gold coins (from Spain, France and the Kingdoms of Italy) before they went to auction in London. Since then there have been a succession of campaigns to recover the vessel’s contents - as

Pamela Gambogi of the Tuscany Archaeology Commission and Sergio Bargagliotti of the Tethys Archaeology firm told us - a feat achieved through the world’s first ever project to use saturation diving.

The Italian Navy also contributed to the expensive operation with the Anteo and her divers and the “Teseo Tesei” Diving Team (Comsubin) with Pegaso, a robotic system which operates at depths of up to 2 thousand metres.

The objects recovered are now able to tell us the story of the ship (which dates from the transition from sail to steam), its crew and the passengers. As in the very best tradition, the treasure is fabulous: 10,000 silver and 78 gold coins and 35 pieces of jewellery, not to mention the booty returned by the British authorities: 1500 silver and 72 gold coins and 80 items of jewellery. a Capoliveri che si può ammirare lo splendido tesoro del Polluce, i reperti recuperati dal fondo del mare e conoscerne tutta la storia, nell’accogliente museo del Mare ricavato in antichi locali in pietra, sotto la piazza principale del paese.

Capoliveri è uno splendido borgo frequentato da artisti di tutto il mondo, affollato in estate, affascinante in inverno; sorge arroccato sulla sommità di un piccolo colle. Di origini etrusche, in epoca medievale si è raccolto intorno alla piazza e a via Roma, dalla quale si diramano strette viuzze, stradine, piazzette e spiazzi, tra archi, archetti, sottopassi. Ormeggiando alla Marina di Porto Azzurro, si raggiunge Capoliveri in 10 minuti d’auto. Interessante la visita alle miniere del Monte Calamita, e al Ginevro, l’unica in galleria di tutta l’Isola, in un panorama forte, aspro, coinvolgente.

The recovered treasure It is at Capoliveri that we can marvel at the splendid treasure from the Polluce, the finds recovered from the bottom of the sea, and learn its full history, at the attractive Museum of the Sea created in old local stone premises underneath the town’s main square.

Capoliveri is a splendid little town that attracts artists from all over the world; crowded in summer and lovely in winter, it is built around the summit of a small hill. Founded by the Etruscans, in Medieval times it stood around the square and via Roma, from which narrow alleys, small streets, squares and yards lead off, with arches, archways and underpasses. For those moored at the Porto Azzuro Marina, Capoliveri is 10 minutes away by car. Also worth a visit are the mines at Monte Calamita and Ginevro, the island’s only underground mine, in a harsh, thrilling landscape.

Hotel Désirée, fondato nel 1957 e recentemente ristrutturato, è situato nell’incantevole e raccolta baia di Spartaia con un accesso diretto alla spiaggia privata di sabbia fine, ed offre grandi spazi all’aperto.

Per la sua posizione è l’ideale per chi ama la tranquillità e la sicurezza per i propri bambini.

La struttura è costituita da un corpo centrale dove sono dislocati il ristorante, un bar, la reception e le camere, e da due strutture che ospitano suites e appartamenti per famiglie.

La leggerezza dell’atmosfera marina pervade l’intera struttura, che sembra avere attinto ai colori e all’equilibrio formale della natura anche nella qualità degli interni di camere e appartamenti, recentemente ristrutturati e improntati a un’estetica sobria ed elegante.

Concentrati in un parco di 7 ettari di macchia mediterranea, offre spiaggia privata, piscina con acqua di mare, campi da tennis, fitness room, campo bocce, biciclette, massage parlour, parco giochi per bambini e molte altre attività sportive (vela, immersioni, windsurf, trekking, mountain bike) ed escursioni possono essere prenotate.

Al ristorante “Don Carlos” lo Chef e la sua equipe prepara piatti tipici della cucina italiana e toscana.

Its position makes it an ideal choice for those who like peace and want a quiet and a safe place for children.

The hotel consists of a central unit with the restaurant, one bar, reception and rooms and two buildings with suites and family rooms. The marine atmosphere lightness pervades the whole structure, which seems to have drawn from the colors and the formal balance of nature for the quality of rooms and apartments interiors, recently renovated with a sober and elegant taste.

In a seven-hectare Mediterranean-scrub park you will find a private beach, sea-water swimming pool, tennis courts, fitness room, bowling, bicycles, massage parlour, playground and other sports like sailing, diving, windsurfing, trekking and mountain biking.

The Chef and his team in the “Don Carlos” restaurant will delight you with typical Italian and Tuscan specialities.

Some of them have been chosen for their low-cal content and others are suitable for vegetarians and gluten-free diets.
