Why seamless AV networks start at the switch

Stijn Geysen, member of the Switch Working Group at the Avnu Alliance, looks at how standards are helping to extend Ethernet’s capabilities in modern networks

WHETHER IT’S A CORPORATE installation, a live event or an additional broadcast application, today’s interconnected professional audiovisual (pro AV) environments require seamless, reliable network performance. This is non-negotiable, but while the increased convergence of diverse media and control traffic has brought about greater efficiency, it has also introduced new complexities. This has made the precise delivery of time-critical data a challenge, especially considering the amount of traffic within modern networks.

Networks must now carry multiple streams of data at various levels of importance – including audio, video, lighting control, show control and monitoring traffic – over shared infrastructure. Thankfully, the increasing development and adoption of open standards developed by the IEEE 802.1 Task Group, such as those for Audio Video Bridging (AVB) and TimeSensitive Networking (TSN), has been a driving force for network evolution. These important standards are helping to extend Ethernet’s capabilities to meet the deterministic performance requirements of modern professional networks.

consoles receive much attention, it is the switches interconnecting them that ultimately determine the reliability and interoperability of the network.

Network switches are no longer passive transit points in modern AV systems. They are active participants in delivering the determinism, redundancy and prioritisation essential for pro AV applications. The performance of a switch – especially its ability to enforce QoS (Quality of Service) policies, manage multicast traffic

Switches – the key to network evolution

Critical features like precise time synchronisation, traffic shaping and bounded low-latency delivery have now been introduced, enabling time-sensitive streams to coexist alongside standard data traffic without degradation. However, while endpoints such as audio processors, cameras and lighting

hardware choices can still lead to increased latency, jitter and dropped packets, undermining even the most meticulously planned systems. As networks scale and diversify, the risks associated with inconsistent or inadequately tested switches multiply. This is where certification programmes for Ethernet switches, particularly those aligned with AVB and TSN standards, have emerged as valuable tools for

The role of certification

Certification ensures that a switch conforms to specific profiles and behaviours defined by the latest industry standards. In the case of AVB/TSN, this includes capabilities such as accurate time synchronisation, per-stream filtering and policing, scheduled traffic and frame pre-emption. Certified

networks under controlled testing conditions, reducing the burden on users to manually validate compatibility and performance, but certification is key to making them commonplace.

Recent updates to certification programmes have reflected the growing demands placed on modern networks. Testing is carried out in isolated laboratory conditions, many of which are run automatically. By certifying their products, switch

manufacturers also demonstrate a commitment to interoperability, avoiding any vendor lock-ins and giving network builders a wide variety of interchangeable certified devices to choose from for their pro AV applications.

Supporting networks across the globe

The value of robust, reliable switching has been demonstrated in several high-profile, technically demanding projects in recent years. At the Eurovision Song Contest 2024,1 one of the world’s most technically sophisticated live events, an intricate lighting control network was built around a fully redundant 10Gb fibre ring topology. The setup supported dozens of lighting consoles, hundreds of nodes and over a thousand fixtures. Multiple control protocols, video signals and monitoring data crossed the network, with precise timing and uninterrupted delivery essential to coordinating cues, effects and video playback for a global broadcast audience of over 160 million. The network’s success relied heavily on the performance and real-time management features of the switches at its core, including redundant ring management, VLAN segmentation and continuous network health monitoring.

Netgear has recently expanded its managed switch portfolio

timing systems. To meet the rigorous demands of redundancy, precision and interoperability in a space most commonly used for American football rather than swimming, engineers deployed a converged AVB/TSN network featuring certified switches to support multiple traffic classes and precise time synchronisation. The resulting performance meant all elements were successfully converged onto a shared network backbone, delivering a flawless media and data experience for all involved.

designs will only grow. Markets such as XR (Extended Reality), live esports and industrial automation are becoming increasingly dependent on AVB/ TSN-based infrastructure to achieve the low-latency, synchronised communication essential for optimal operations.

do not include crucial features that support AVB, QoS and Precision Time Protocol.

When both departments work closely from the start, selecting both networks and endpoints together, it can result in a more stable network. By selecting certified switches, these can coexist efficiently.

The ongoing evolution of AVB/ TSN standards continues to add new capabilities for prioritising, scheduling and synchronising network traffic. However, the switch remains the cornerstone of any reliable real-time AV network. Its role in enforcing determinism while maintaining interoperability is essential to ensuring high performance through rigorous, standards-based certification programmes, benefiting the entire ecosystem.

A similarly complex – but very different – application was seen at the US Olympic Swimming Trials2 last year. Held in the unique live sports environment of Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, pro AV infrastructure had to support the integration of broadcast video, LED displays, realtime scoring, audio distribution and

This example highlights the essential role of reliable, standardsbased switching infrastructure in delivering complex, time-sensitive AV experiences, regardless of scale or environment.

Future-ready networks

As pro AV networks continue to merge with enterprise IT and operational technology (OT) systems, the importance of deterministic, converged network

Certification programmes not only support this growth by ensuring products meet interoperability and performance benchmarks but also by enabling manufacturers and integrators to adopt standardised design practices. These practices facilitate easier network expansion, reduce integration time and improve long-term system reliability.

All too often, IT departments lay out network infrastructure for new buildings without consulting an AV integrator. This often means a network is mandated for specific AV applications, instead of both departments collaborating to ensure optimal network performance. This leads to switches being implemented that

As AV networks evolve to accommodate higher resolutions, immersive experiences and greater automation, the attention has switched to the switching infrastructure as a critical component of seamless performance. By focusing on certified, purpose-built switching solutions that meet that unique challenge of time-sensitive media delivery, AV professionals can build networks that are not only highperforming but also resilient and future-ready.

Creating a sustainable office

Innovative green office ideas for the pro AV industry

FOR DECADES, THE PRO AV industry has relied on power-draining projectors, high-wattage displays and energy-hungry sound systems that carry a high environmental cost. As legislative and corporate responsibility mandates call for greater sustainability in workplace environments, the AV industry is responding with innovations that are helping to create sustainable offices and protect the environment.

Understanding the sustainable office

A sustainable office is a workplace designed and operated to minimise environmental harm and maximise resource efficiency while creating a healthy and productive environment for employees. Its primary mission is to use energy-efficient technology, reduce waste, deploy eco-friendly materials and implement e-cycling protocols. In today’s world, where climate change is one of the foremost issues of our time, a commitment to environmental protection demonstrates that an organisation isn’t just talking the talk but walking the walk. Keeping up with the latest trends in sustainable equipment and ecofriendly materials for AV industry professionals and end users requires ongoing investments, research and adapting to new standards. But is it worth the effort?

Key benefits of a sustainable office

When organisations commit to ensuring sustainable office practices, it’s a win–win for everyone. From positively impacting the environment to improving the organisation’s financial well-being and enhancing employee morale, a sustainable office provides

considers ways in which innovations in the AV industry

operate only when needed. Integrate renewable energy sources: reduce reliance on traditional power grids by incorporating solar panels, battery storage and other renewable energy solutions.

Enhance thermal management: prevent overheating and improve system longevity with proper ventilation, liquid cooling and efficient rack design.

Sustainable design practices

Incorporating sustainable design practices enables organisations to not only reduce energy consumption but also create a healthier work environment that enhances productivity. Consider implementing the following protocols.

organisations with significant environmental, economic and health-focused benefits.

Environmental impact

Committing to establishing a green office involves capital investments in energy-efficient conferencing systems, digital signage and displays, and AV systems as well as implementing strategies for recycling and disposing of toxic AV components like lead and mercury. These activities decrease energy consumption, reduce carbon footprint and avoid toxic landfill burden.

Economic advantages

Green office protocols can help organisations gain a competitive edge in their industry by conforming to the preferences of businesses and consumers to partner with environmentally responsible vendors.

A 2024 study by PwC1 found that 85% of survey respondents are experiencing the disruptive effects of climate change first-hand and 46% are buying more sustainable products to reduce their impact on the environment.

Enhanced workplace environment

Sustainable offices are focused on safeguarding indoor air quality, providing access to natural daylight, using noise-reducing materials and adopting recycling strategies that create a more positive workplace. According to a study on the impact of sustainability on employee behaviour,2 50% of workers wouldn’t consider a job offer from a company that did not have a strong sustainability practice, and 65% of millennials would reject such an offer.

Green office ideas for the pro AV industry

Given its historical dependence on high power-drawing products and systems, the industry can do more to protect the environment through the design of eco-friendly technology, ergonomic floor plans and green procurement strategies.

Eco-friendly technology

Investing in eco-friendly technology helps organisations achieve their environmental protection goals without sacrificing technological performance. Here are some suggestions.

Choose energy-efficient equipment: upgrade to LED lighting, ENERGY STAR-certified AV systems and low-power devices to reduce overall energy consumption. Use smart automation systems: implement occupancy sensors, automated power management and

What are the key trends shaping the pro AV industry?

The increasing amount of microphones in spaces with no acoustic treatment is a matter we have to address now. There’s already been some research into how to make these microphones sound better using smart learning which enables the microphone to know what’s going on in the room and provide a profile for the user. The microphone then knows if it’s a sound, a voice, whether it’s a male or female voice, if it’s loud or soft, or if someone is mumbling. With this smart learning, the microphone can better focus on the sounds we want to hear. So the next thing is whether we can put this smart technology inside the microphone.

What products is Audio-Technica developing to meet these trends?

Research has already started to combat some of these acoustic issues by using firmware to increase the beam sensitivity in the microphones. With beam analytics, this enables the microphone to hear more efficiently in the room and focus just on the voices. It can identify any reflections coming off glass walls for example, giving users a more focused and enhanced sound.

What innovative solutions are you showcasing at InfoComm Asia 2025?

This year, we are focusing on lecturers, IT/AV staff and consultants who specialise in educational technology, especially in buildings with a large quantity of microphones and DSP channels. We are also integrating our LINK audio-over-network protocol into more of our products – this is essential, so we are able to offer cost-effective smart systems to projects on the ASEAN region.

Why should visitors come to your booth?

Regardless of the education establishment, everybody needs to teach in a certain way and, with the use of interactive whiteboards increasing, our all-in-one solutions can offer a great audio experience. For interacting with students on Teams or Zoom, customers can blend our wireless and ceiling microphones systems into the room. Our System 20 PRO is the second generation of our System 10 PRO and offers more channels and a simple user experience. It works on 2.4GHz and doesn’t need any special frequency management. There are four formats: handheld, bodypack, boundary and gooseneck so we can show visitors on our booth how we can build a custom solution for them.

Why is InfoComm Asia an important show for Audio-Technica?

Not everyone has the time to do research on the internet and looking at our website only gives you some information but by visiting us we can have a face-to-face conversation where they can speak to a specialist who can advise them on a solution to their needs or problems. We have seen some cases where people are overspending on a simple solution – we spend a lot of time thinking about simplifying our products because nowadays everything is so complicated and technical. These are the kinds of conversations we can have on the booth so we can find out what’s best for your organisation.

What key trends are currently shaping the pro AV market?

The lines between professional AV and IT are already blurring with corporate companies’ demands of AV continuing to evolve. Generation AV has the products to complement these trends whether they’re IoT-based or immersive audio. LEA Professional, SurgeX and TiMax all have products that complement these trends.

What can visitors see on your booth this year?

Last year was our first show and we had the new LEA half-racks that had been recently launched and a large TiMax display for which we received some great feedback. People were also showing interest in SurgeX products, and so this year we’ll be showing more new products from these brands. We’ll be showing the new LEA power amplifiers along with the Talk 8 and ZonePad 8 from Optimal Audio, along with the DM88 from NST Audio. In terms of immersive audio, we’ll be doing live demos of the new panLab from TiMax on the booth.

Why should visitors come to your booth?

We’ll be holding plenty of hands-on sessions particularly for immersive audio but also for LEA, NST and SurgeX. We also want to welcome people who just want to find out more about our products without feeling pressured into buying something – we want to educate our visitors about the products to give a better outreach. And we’re proud to be right next door to our partner Fuzion because we both offer complementary products. We want to up the ante on our booth this year and keep reaching out to the market and our customers. We had a high number of visitors last year and a good mix of nationalities so we’re looking to increase on last year’s momentum.

Reshaping in-person experiences

Pierre Gillet, vice president of international sales at BrightSign, looks at the

medium that captivates, informs and influences in real time.

Businesses that are looking at new and innovative ways to enhance audience experiences and increase engagement can unlock new levels of interactivity, personalisation and efficiency by adopting signage solutions that integrate AI applications. Digital signage solutions that are integrated with AI technologies can collect valuable information from audience engagement, customer behaviour and product interactions, enabling data-driven decision-making. This will only make future experiences more personable and engaging.

THE EVOLUTION OF DIGITAL signage has redefined how information is displayed, giving businesses greater control over content, where to display it and how to maximise its impact – whether this is at live events, visitor attractions, restaurants, shops or museums. With modern digital signage and media players, the possibilities are virtually limitless, allowing businesses to deliver dynamic content and create immersive and engaging environments that captivate audiences, foster interaction and enhance experiences.

Delivering dynamic content and interactivity

Digital signage technologies deliver personalised and interactive experiences. For example, in museums, visitors can interact with touchscreen exhibits or view highdefinition visuals that bring history, objects and art to life, making the interactions more memorable. This not only fosters deeper connections with the content, but rich visuals, audio and touchscreen interactions also stimulate the senses.

In retail, engaging customers through “lift and learn” applications can significantly enhance in-store experiences. When paired with specialist IoT sensors, digital signage players provide custom onscreen content and information based on items users pick up, potentially leading to increased sales and engagement. For example, when customers pick up clothing to try on, digital signage can instantly display information

such as price, returns information, the designer and other garments that would complement the item they have chosen. Sensors can also be used to adapt lighting, based on the proximity of the customer to a display. This creates an increasingly personal shopping experience.

Sharing real-time information

Digital signage solutions serve as an effective tool for sharing real-time

information. In attractions and public spaces, digital signage provides wayfinding, safety messages and event updates, giving visitors complete peace of mind. This is particularly pertinent in transport hubs. We take easy access to flight or train departure and arrival times for granted now, but live information, displayed clearly at check-ins and baggage claims, and simple directions to shops and QSR locations enhances efficiency, reduces congestion and improves passenger

Enhancing live sporting events

Cutting-edge digital signage solutions also play a crucial role in transforming fan engagement at live sporting events. These not only deliver an immersive and interactive experience for fans but are crucial for real-time navigation and information delivery, providing seamless wayfinding and efficient ordering at concession stands. They also help event organisers to maximise commercial relationships and brand activations through bright and engaging visuals.

AI increases engagement like never before

Digital signage solutions that integrate technologies like AI can revolutionise in-person experiences. The introduction of AI is a paradigm shift for digital signage, reshaping how businesses engage with their audiences. No longer a static broadcasting tool, digital signage has evolved into an intelligent, responsive

AI takes existing passive customer experiences and makes them deeply engaging. By enabling more meaningful interactions, signage applications are turning viewers into active participants, fostering a connection that was previously unattainable with traditional digital signage solutions. By embracing AI, IoT and real-time analytics software, businesses can maximise ROI, increase user engagement and understand their audiences like never before.

The future of in-person experiences

The future of digital signage is already here. Going forward, it will be driven by ever-evolving consumer expectations that require similarly dynamic and powerful technology. When considering digital signage solutions, it’s important to consider how to balance performance, reliability and security against the deployment’s specific requirements. Ultimately, these can be consumed across a range of form factors and technologies to deliver a costeffective solution.

For deploying dynamic digital signage solutions that deliver real-time content, and integrations with IoT sensors or social media feeds, digital signage owners should consider using a robust CMS platform. These are capable of managing complex media formats and delivering personalised content efficiently. They also need to remotely manage networks and content scheduling, live updates and performance analytics across multiple devices in multiple locations. By leveraging innovative digital signage solutions and increasing collaboration with CMS partners, we are paving the way for a future where technology and creativity converge to redefine how we encounter the world around us. But this transformation is not just about technology – it’s about creating moments that inspire, connect and resonate, helping to shape the future of in-person experiences.

Why is InfoComm Asia important to your business and the region?

Although the third largest market now, the Asia Pacific market is expected to be the fastest-growing, overtaking Europe by 2032, making it critical for all brands to invest in this region. For SEA, InfoComm Asia remains the preferred show for trade visitors, attracting distributors, systems integrators, consultants and end users. With the 2024 show having a 21% rise in visitor numbers, it will be important for us to be represented in the show to make new connections and maintain current ones, and showcase the new products and solutions from Powersoft.

Why has Powersoft decided to return this year?

InfoComm Asia has proven itself as the key gathering point for all major stakeholders in the region. Our 2024 participation delivered excellent results in both visitor quantity and quality, and highlighted an important shift: manufacturers now choose to exhibit directly, shoulder-to-shoulder with local partners, rather than relying solely on distributor-led stands. In this evolving environment, Powersoft’s direct presence is more strategic than ever, allowing us to showcase innovations such as the Nota 142 and reaffirm our commitment to the installation and integration markets. Attending is about far more than visibility; it’s about building meaningful, long-term connections across Southeast Asia.

What do you like most about Bangkok?

Believe it or not, the traffic – because it underscores the value of forethought and remote problemsolving. When the roads are gridlocked, tools such as MyUniverso shine: integrators can monitor, troubleshoot and fine-tune systems without leaving their desks. Cloud-based workflows save time, reduce costs and elevate the customer experience.

Which emerging trend do you think is the most exciting and why?

There are so many emerging trends so far in 2025: immersive experiences, AI in AV, sustainable solutions, advanced analytics, enhanced connectivity, hybrid simplification and collaborative spaces. Many of these are reflected in our portfolio. The Nota 142 addresses the accelerating IT/AV convergence in a compact, network-ready form factor; UNICA offers a scalable amplification platform with broad power ranges and extensive networking for everything from background music to highpower performance venues; and MyUniverso streamlines daily operations, opening efficient remotemaintenance workflows. Yet the most exciting trend transcends technology: the move from exclusive, closed ecosystems to inclusive, interoperable solutions. No brand – or person – is an island. Collaboration unlocks greater value than proprietary silos ever could.

What are you most looking forward to at the show?

The visitors. At Powersoft, we focus on the human audio experience and it won’t be possible without them. Therefore, we are looking forward to meeting everyone and letting our visitors understand why we focus on the humans, the audio and the experience.

What trends are you currently seeing in the pro AV industry?

We are seeing an increase in demand for compact and high-performance projection solutions, especially for immersive environments like art installations and live events in hotels, museums, temples and schools or universities. We are responding to this with our Z6000 and Z8000 projectors and also our latest ZUH6000 model with 6,000 lumens of brightness and 4K resolution. It’s a powerful ultra-short-throw projector that combines high performance and flexible installation. It’s a compact projector that comes with a unique rotating lens allowing 360° adjustment and can be used in challenging environments, for example tight spaces or projecting onto curved screens, without sacrificing image quality. Its most innovative feature is the folded two-axial rotatable lens which makes it ideal for museums, buildings and live events that require creative and space-saving solutions. This projector reflects the market need for versatility and minimal space usage and positions us at the forefront of innovation in the projection market.

What products are you showcasing at InfoComm Asia 2025?

We will be showing our ZUH6000 in a real-world setup so that visitors can see first-hand how the projector performs in tight, curved and vertical spaces and we’ll show people how the rotating lens works so that images can be projected onto walls, ceilings and floors. We hope this will inspire systems integrators, designers and AV professionals who are looking for space-saving solutions without compromising on brightness.

What’s next for Fujifilm in the projection and AV space?

We are continuing to push the boundaries in compact projections, lens innovation and installation flexibility. Moving forward we are also exploring interactive capabilities and projection mapping features to better support emerging applications in art technology, live events and hybrid spaces across Asia.

The best of Bangkok

CARLOS SALLABERRY GREW up in Puerto Rico, entering a professional recording studio for the first time aged nine with his two older brothers, original members of local boy band, Menudo. “I knew I would work in the audio industry from that young age,” he says. “I was blown away by the whole process of recording.”

Working with bands in high school led to a BSc in Recording Industry Management at Middle Tennessee State University, after which Sallaberry landed a job in New York with Sony Music International, handling A&R for the Latin division. By 2001, he was working in the live industry for dB Sound, touring with acts including Trans-Siberian Orchestra, the Rolling Stones and Incubus, then freelancing with Clair Brothers and Eighth Day Sound for tours with Bon Jovi, Maroon 5, Coldplay, Paul McCartney, Van Halen and others. Highlights of this time include mixing FOH for Pharrell Williams’ band NERD and handling monitors for Allison Krauss, Josh Groban and Erik Bennet.

In 2009, Sallaberry moved into the corporate AV world, working for Creative Technology (CT) from 2011 until the end of 2020 when Covid hit. However, despite the challenges this brought, it also ushered in the opportunity to accept an APACbased position with Adamson: “a huge change from being on the road doing gigs to working for a manufacturer”. In 2022, he moved to Phuket, Thailand, a country he’d been visiting since 2013.

“A gig for CT originally brought me to Bangkok in 2013, and I fell in love with the country,” he recalls.

street food, art and nightlife. The city offers great dining and cultural experiences and a lot of entertainment. In Phuket, I live about 100m from the beach – a perfect place to decompress after being on the road for a while. The people are so nice, friendly and always smiling, giving Thailand its reputation as ‘the country of smiles’.”

a global creative powerhouse,” he continues. “You see a lot of film, broadcast, live events and digital content coming out of this city. Its affordability and infrastructure make it a go-to destination for regional and global AV projects, with many events being held in Bangkok as it is such a great destination in Asia.”

When in Bangkok, Sallaberry likes to visit Benjakitti Park, right next to the Queen Sirikit National

Arun or a tour by traditional Thai longboats down the Chao Praya river to view the temples from the water and, of course, the Grand Palace. Although taxis in Bangkok are plentifully and relatively inexpensive, with plenty of ride-sharing apps also available, Sallaberry warns that the city’s traffic can be brutal. “Bangkok offers visitors many ways of getting around the city, with its modern and reliable mass transit

In Sallaberry’s experience, Bangkok’s position as a central, well-connected hub makes it a top choice for regional and global travel, with plenty of international flights offering diverse routes and low costs. “Bangkok is thriving as

Convention Centre, and also enjoys the bars and clubs on Soi 11 off Sukhumvit Road. Favourites include Havana Social as well as rooftop bars such as Above 11. He recommends seeing the cultural sights first: temple visits to Wat

system which is clean, fast, safe and air conditioned,” he advises.

“And, of course, tuk tuks are always an experience for newcomers to the city.”

www.infocomm-asia.com

What are the most pressing challenges currently facing the market and how are you addressing them?

With regards to wireless usage especially in the professional audio industry, we see two pressing challenges for better efficient utilisation of the spectrum band, along with flexibility for channel scalability requested by various end users.

One noticeable effect is the introduction of WMAS (Wireless Multichannel Audio Systems) regulatory framework, of which Shure is actively participating and promoting. With WMAS coming into effect, Shure announced the launch of our ADPSM (Axient Digital Personal In-Ear Monitoring system) in October 2024. ADPSM will help take live performance to the next level. Now, RF engineers don’t need to worry about complex requirements for large productions as they can have more on-air wireless audio channels with easy setup and monitoring.

In addition, Shure will continue to enhance and introduce other new innovations such as:

ANX4 Scalable Wireless Receiver: this high-tier, high-channel count wireless receiver is the first Shure wireless receiver featuring channel scalability, offering up to 16 channels of Axient Digital or 24 channels of ULX-D in a single device via channel licences.

Axient Digital Standard Transmission Mode (Point to Point Transmission): this enables ADTQ and ADTD transmitters to send wireless audio to various Axient Digital microphone receivers, extending highpower, long-distance audio transmission capabilities.

Which emerging trend do you think is the most exciting and why?

he trend towards automation, driven by AI, is improving efficiency in many workplace applications. This will include the expectation on audio conferencing solutions. At the same time, while the variety of audio solutions have evolved over the years, simplicity of use continues to dominate among end users. For example, we are seeing increasing adoption of AI-driven tools, such as Microsoft 365 Copilot, to assist with tasks such as real-time audio transcription during conference calls as well as postmeeting summaries. With that, we see the increasing need for better audio clarity. Shure has worked closely with Microsoft on developing our solution and is part of the Microsoft Device Ecosystem Platform (MDEP). This partnership ensures that our new IntelliMix Room Kits can meet the highest security standards and deliver exceptional audio quality for Microsoft Teams Rooms. With zero-touch provisioning, the audio, video and computer devices auto-configure out of the box for a streamlined setup experience.

What are they key trends that you’re currently seeing?

One of the key trends shaping the future of the pro AV industry is AI. At Cisco, AI is something we’ve been implementing in our solutions for a decade and, today, generative AI is a huge part of WebEx and the entire Cisco portfolio. We’ve been a partner with Nvidia since 2015 and we’ve just launched the third generation of our devices with Nvidia incorporated inside, so we knew that AI was going to be the future even back then.

What key products is Cisco developing to meet these trends?

We’ve recently launched our latest Ceiling Microphone Pro which is our first adaptive ceiling microphone with 64 elements built in. It provides directional voice capture through beamforming with eight adaptive beams that automatically focus on the active speakers. The microphone will pick up the voice no matter where the speaker is sitting or standing – it will understand the room, set up the space and make sure that it’s focusing on where the sound is coming from. And what’s unique about this microphone is that it works together with our cameras to only focus on the source of the sound. The microphone also has a zero-touch configuration which means that no matter where you are and no matter how the space is set up, it can self-adjust to any changes in the room within minutes instead of hours.

What are you focusing on at InfoComm 2025?

We will be showcasing our Room Bar BYOD with a single USB-C connection. Customers can instantly access high-quality video, spatial sound and AI-powered noise removal and transform any room into a professional collaboration space. Whether you’re using WebEx, Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams, meetings start instantly without the usual tech struggles or compatibility concerns. With our 4K content-sharing capability, presentations are sharper and more engaging than ever. It also integrates with our control hub and managing platform so it provides the IT team with real-time analytics of the room along with remote management and troubleshooting capabilities. This means that businesses can operate meeting spaces while ensuring a seamless experience for employees. Visitors will also be able to see our Cisco Assistant collaboration device in action on the booth and see how you can create intelligent workspaces that are equipped with everything from voice commands to AI-driven camera views and embedded IoT sensors. We can show you how to use networking, collaboration and security to create workspaces that are truly futureproofed.

The growing importance of media encryption in AV

Audinate’s audio product marketing manager Greg Kopchinski explains how platforms like Dante can help take the hassle out of important media encryption

ENCRYPTION HAS EXISTED for thousands of years, stretching back to ancient Egypt. At its most basic, encryption is the process of transforming information or data so that only the parties with the key to unscramble it can access it. Today, encryption is used in the transfer of communication over networks and the internet for security and commerce.

As encryption schemes became increasingly sophisticated, so too did the means to crack the scheme, often by brute computing force. Modern encryption standards use stronger key sizes of (at least) 128- or 256-bits, meaning there are 2128 and 2256 potential secret keys, respectively, to prevent bad actors from cracking the algorithm. The possible number of keys in a 256-bit encryption scheme is a number with 78 digits – one so large that it’s exponentially greater than the number of atoms in the observable universe.

The purpose of encrypting AV media is the same as that of other applications: ensuring the confidentiality of information as it travels across the AV network. Since data may be visible on the internet, sensitive information such as passwords and personal communication may be exposed to potential interceptors. If the information is not encoded, those interceptors can freely read, watch or listen to content not intended for them, which can have disastrous implications. However, it’s essential to recognise that robust cyber

security comprises several aspects, including user authentication, firewalls, network segmentation, transaction logging (traceability) and more. Encryption is an important piece of the security hierarchy, but all facets of network security are vital to protect private information from being exposed.

An intro to media encryption

End-to-end media encryption is a network transport method where the content is encrypted on the sending device and only decrypted on the receiving device. Media encryption is crucial for AVoIP networks that transport sensitive information, such as in finance, healthcare and government agencies, so that the content is protected from eavesdropping or unauthorised access. For example, encrypting audio captured by an AoIP conference room microphone and decrypting it at the networked loudspeaker or conference system prevents the audio from being intelligible if it is purposely or maliciously routed to another network device.

A proven and trusted encryption method is AES-256 (Advanced Encryption Standard with a 256-bit key). This key size provides a high level of security and is considered robust against brute-force attacks, where an attacker tries all possible keys until finding the correct one. It is widely used across various applications due to its strong security properties and efficiency.

Media encryption and interoperability

Interoperability and, by extension, encryption between AV equipment from different manufacturers can be very challenging. A classic fix for both interoperability and encryption challenges is the manufacturerspecific ecosystem or “walled garden” approach – a single-brand universe of products. The main advantage of this ecosystem is that the products work well together, like so many building blocks. However, the obvious downside is that the complete solution is limited to that one brand and the available options, which may not be wellsuited to every installation. Integrating secure AV equipment with encryption between two or more manufacturers can make key management exceptionally challenging. The encryption keys are critical to the process – they’re the secret decoder rings. AES-256 uses the same key for both encryption and decr yption, which must be kept secret to maintain the security of the encrypted data. In a multi-manufacturer AV system, identifying the “key master” and synchronising keys is problematic at best, with many solutions requiring manual key management and synchronisation.

problem of key management out of the hands of manufacturers.

Forecasting the future

An alternate solution for multimanufacturer interoperability and encoding is having a trusted third party develop a fully supported, end-to-end interoperability and encryption solution like Dante. Third-party solutions take the

While many companies are selfmotivated to protect their digital assets, governmental cyber regulations have recently been introduced to protect user data. Manufacturers and integrators have to adhere to these emerging regulations, so more end-to-end encrypted solutions will be required in the near future. That said, not every system needs encryption, so the most robust outcome will likely include encryption capabilities in products that can be enabled through a network management system on a device-by-device basis. Media encryption will be crucial for securing and safeguarding information shared in meeting rooms and conference spaces with the next generation of AVoIP installations.
