TODD McINTOSH

DIRECTOR, MAKE-UP DEPARTMENT Success in the Make-up Industry depends upon the right combination of three special qualities: Aptitude, Attitude and Adaptability. This is the career philosophy of Todd McIntosh, self-taught veteran Make-up Artist and Director of the Blanche Macdonald Make-up Department. Todd was born in California and grew up in Victoria, BC. He started creating monster make-ups at the age of 12, inspired by the TV series Dark Shadows. These make-ups expanded to include costumes, props and acting and led to his discovery by the President of Victoria’s Langham Court Theatre. This gave Todd his first opportunity to work with actors, assisting cast members with their theatrical make-ups. His first show, Kurt Weill’s A Threepenny Opera, would be followed by over 30 more. While studying drama in High School, Todd continued to polish his make-up skills; he also began teaching make-up for the first time. By 17 he had replaced his early eye pencil and cardboard fang techniques with professional products and his first foamed latex masks. These new-found skillls in special make-up f/x were developed through reading and study, and by careful observation of TV and film. Industry stars such as Dick Smith (The Exorcist), Rick Baker (An American Werewolf In London) and Michael Westmore (Star Trek: The Next Generation) were Todd’s idols at an early age. He moved to Vancouver in 1979 and was hired by the CBC where he began working on variety shows including The Raes and TV series such as The Beachcombers. It was at the CBC that he upgraded his skills in beauty and glamour make-ups, thus opening doors that often remain closed to make-up artists who specialize in only one area. In subsequent years, Todd’s list of credits became lengthy and impressive. His reputation and experience grew as he worked on all manner of projects in Vancouver’s rapidly expanding film industry. TV series such as Wiseguy and Neon Rider complimented film projects such as Look Who’s Talking I and II. As he continued to gain experience in all aspects of the make-up field, he found time to write the curriculum for Blanche Macdonald’s ever-expanding Make-up Division and taught at the school whenever his busy schedule allowed. After years as a motivator in the Vancouver film scene, including establishing the Make-up Department of I.A.T.S.E. Local 891, Todd decided to try his hand at the centre of the film business - Hollywood - and moved to Los Angeles in 1990. To date, his outstanding credentials include Billy Crystal’s Mr. Saturday Night, City Slickers I and II, Robin Hood: Men In Tights, The Brady Bunch Movie and Brady Bunch II (both with Shelley Long and RuPaul). In 1993 he returned to Vancouver to work on Hideaway with Jeff Goldblum. He designed the make-up and headed the department for Mel Brooks’ Dracula: Dead and Loving It. TV credits have included special make-ups on the first season of Seaquest DSV, working on series such as Who’s The Boss?, Get A Life and many others. In 1995, he was part of the Emmy-nominated make-up team for the TV movie, Buffalo Girls. A very important addition to Todd’s TV credits is mega-hit series Buffy The Vampire Slayer which he headed for 6 years. He and his team received three Emmy nominations for their amazing work on what is now a cult favourite and won in 1999 for the Surprise/Innocence episode. On Saturday, August 29 1999 Todd made his first acceptance speech at the Technical Emmy Awards in Los Angeles. He is currently working on the new, critically acclaimed ABC series Pushing Daisies. True to form, Todd remains active as an educator through the Hollywood film local and in a variety of Los Angeles training facilities. As Director of the Blanche Macdonald Make-up Department, he oversees the various levels of the course on a consulting basis and is continuously involved in writing and upgrading the programs. When in Vancouver, Todd teaches specialty classes and monitors our curriculum. He believes that the art of make-up is very complex. A make-up artist must be a technician, a politician, an artist and a psychiatrist ...part chemist ...part administrator. It is really a career that requires skills from all areas of life. “Your product is people. The Make-up Diploma Program is a Full-time program. Classes are scheduled for 20 hours per week: Monday/ Tuesday and Wednesday or Wednesday/Thursday and Friday. A student must successfully complete ALL levels of the course, including Cosmetic Retailing and Hairstyling, in order to obtain a Diploma. Each section of the course includes both theoretical and practical study with a stronger emphasis on the practical. Exams – both written and practical are given at the end of each section. Students receive a transcript at the end of each section. To help the students create a working portfolio, numerous professional photo shoots are scheduled throughout the program. Students are also encouraged to bring their own digital camera to keep a record of their practical work and will be required to bring a digital camera to the Introduction to Art & Technology. Please note that it is necessary to bring models (female and sometimes male) for practical exercises and exams. Students must provide their own models.

COURSE OUTLINES

LEVEL 1

MAKE-UP FUNDAMENTALS This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of make-up application for Daytime and Evening Make-up, classic looks and current fashion looks. The student is introduced to the various styles of make-up from natural to glamorous. COURSE OBJECTIVES • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Learning about commercial and professional equipment, tools, materials and products used in make-up application Understanding the basics of skin structure, skin care and make-up subject preparation Analyzing bone structure and face shapes correctly Correcting various facial shapes with contouring, shading and highlighting Selecting make-up products based on proper analysis of skin tones and undertones Understanding colour theory, seasons and tonality Labeling the colour wheel correctly Knowing and demonstrating the sequence of basic make-up application Reviewing the purpose, selection and application of foundation, correction, concealer and powder for different ethnic groups, ages, skin tones and skin types Applying cheek colour application for day and evening looks correctly Correctly shaping eyebrows, and selecting appropriate eyebrow make-up for application Analyzing eye shapes correctly and applying make-up for correction Assessing lip shapes and making necessary corrections Selecting appropriate lip colours and applying various products and textures to meet clients’ individual needs Understanding the basic rules of light and make-up Applying practical application of daytime and evening make-up, classic looks, fashion looks, natural styles, subtle styles, glamourous and dramatic styles Discussing make-up for mature women Learning the practical application of wedding make-up

LEVEL 2

COSMETIC RETAILING This course is pertinent to students and beauty professionals involved in make-up techniques and applications. It will provide students with practical information on all aspects of using these skills in a cosmetics retail environment. Students will become familiar with the retail cosmetic industry, selling skills, and customer service. COURSE OBJECTIVES • • • • • • • •

Becoming familiar with the cosmetic industry structure and retail classifications Reviewing the essentials of various cosmetic retailing merchandising techniques and inventory control systems Being introduced to the cosmetic marketing concepts and the marketing cycle Understanding consumer behaviour, identifying customer types, and analyzing customer and client needs are explored Developing effective selling skills and presentation techniques through cosmetic consultations Learning to provide excellent customer service and developing a clientele. Role playing exercises are an essential part of this course. Understanding the seasonal fashion trends for cosmetics and fragrances Using cosmetic retailing terminology correctly

LEVEL 3

INTRODUCTION TO ART & TECHNOLOGY Digital Photography: This section is delivered after the students have completed their first make-up module, which includes a professional photo-shoot by a professional photographer, selected by the college. • • • • •

Show and tell by an industry professional about the important features of a good portfolio Explanation and demonstration of a typical photo-shoot setup given by a professional photographer. This also covers the basic principles of portrait photography. Students learn the features and settings needed to take good photos with their own digital cameras Students also learn how to choose a suitable backdrop and how to use available lighting and simple reflectors to document make-up Using their own cameras, a tripod and a standard lighting setup, students photograph a model without make-up and again with make-up. At the end of the class, the student photos are projected onto a screen and critiqued. A screen demonstration of what Photoshop can and cannot do is reviewed




LEVEL 4

HAIR FOR BRIDAL AND FASHION This module covers basic knowledge of hair styling in relation to make-up and how to create the total look. Students develop essential basic skills in Hairstyling that will allow them to better market themselves as professional make-up artists for weddings and the fashion industry. COURSE OBJECTIVES • • • •

Understanding the basic procedures of hair styling Becoming familiar and comfortable with a wide variety of styling tools and products Developing competency in basic styling techniques including roller sets, blow drying, backcombing and finishing Gaining skills and confidence with simple updo’s including the French twist, French roll, back bun, Spanish bun and knot tying

LEVEL 5

HAIR FOR STAGE, TV & FILM This course provides an introduction to hairstyling for television and film environments expected of make up artists. Students will be learning various techniques to develop character hairstyles. They will also be learning the proper etiquette of the hair department on set and meeting the demands of set work. COURSE OBJECTIVES • • • • •

Wrapping hair for bald cap application Demonstrating the application of wigs, facial pieces and accessories Reviewing and discussing the cleaning and blocking of wigs and pieces Understanding the importance of maintaining continuity of work Learning the responsibilities of a stylist on set

LEVEL 6

Make-up FOR FASHION This level of the Make-up Program involves a building of the basics learned in the Fundamentals of the first level. Students will learn about the fashion trends in make-up past and present, lighting for photography in black & white and colour as well as make-up for fashion shows. Students will practice make-up application with the objective of increasing their speed and accuracy. COURSE OBJECTIVES • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Increasing speed in make-up application Identifying make-up fashions of specific decades of the 20th century with accuracy Recognizing and identifying current make-up fashions Gaining awareness of the continual changes in make-up, its trends and alternative looks Acquiring skills to create a make-up croquis of face charts for fashion Applying make-up with corrective and camouflage techniques Leaning to coordinate the make-up look with the hairstylist’s, fashion stylist’s and photographer’s artistic visions Working effectively with models, stylists and photographers Learning the proper etiquette when working with a production team Understanding the various positions and the respective responsibilities within a photo studio Having a working knowledge of fashion photography with regards to make-up application Using the appropriate etiquette and understanding various comfort levels with body make-up application Discussing various career opportunities in fashion and photography make-up

LEVEL 7

RESUMÉ PREPARATION & JOB SEARCH SKILLS This course is designed to help enrich the student’s professional image by upgrading their skills to an accomplished level in business communications, career awareness, job search, assertiveness and public speaking. To achieve the course objectives and to maximize the benefits from this course, active class participation is necessary. COURSE OBJECTIVES • • • • • • • • • • • •

Gaining an overview of the Make-up Industry Examining the hidden job market and learning how to access different career opportunities Discussing the” Do’s and Don’ts” of a portfolio / website (virtual portfolio) Taking an inventory of individual employment skills Taking an inventory of individual transferable skills Taking an inventory of individual occupational skills Learning how to perform informational interviews as a networking tool Creating and outlining a job search process Learning how to prepare a professional and effective resumé & business card Presenting a professional resume and business card Preparing and practicing how to effectively and successfully handle interviews, various interview questions etc. Reviewing proper business etiquette

LEVEL 8

FILM ORIENTATION & W.H.M.I.S. SEMINARS This course provides the student with information required to work on set. Students will learn the trades involved for on set production, union and guild jurisdictions, the nature of the workplace as well as set etiquette and protocol. The course includes information about safety and hazardous products in their workplaces. Students will learn about the basic health and safety measures needed to work safely on set. Upon successful completion, students will receive certification through the B.C. Institute of Film Professionals. COURSE OBJECTIVES • • • • • • • •

Learning on set job classifications and descriptions Knowing set terminology and language Understanding and practicing the etiquette and protocol expected on set Understanding the importance of interpersonal skills Having awareness of the demands and challenges of working in film Identifying the WHMIS symbols and knowing their meaning Learning the labels on products Learning the information to be included on a Material Safety Data Sheet

LEVEL 9

MAKE-UP FOR STAGE, T.V. & FILM This level of the Make-up Program continues to build on the skills learned in the previous two levels of Make-up Fundamentals and Fashions in Make-up/Photographic Make-up. Students will learn about different makeup applications for the T.V. and the film industry. Stage and Body Make-up will also be introduced in this level. Lighting aspects for each medium will also be discussed. Students will continue to practice make-up application with the objective of increasing their application speed from the previous level. COURSE OBJECTIVES • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • 12

Increasing speed in make-up application Analyzing and comparing commercial and professional products Knowing the current standards of Make-up Unions with regards to make-up kits and their minimum care requirements Knowing the minimum standard of expertise for union application Discussing the lighting for Stage, T.V. and Film and their effect on make-up Learning and understanding the make-up artist’s role on the production set Gaining knowledge of what is expected of the make-up artist with regards to personal presentation and professionalism Following and reading a call sheet correctly Following a script, breakdown and list the make-up requirements for various characters Developing and applying the appropriate make-up for a scripted character Preparing and executing a continuity chart Understanding budget and time limitations for make-up application on a set Having a working knowledge of the procedures for basic, corrective and concealing make-up for various styles of T.V. characters and personalities which include the newscaster and character make-ups Acquiring a working knowledge of the different make-up applications when applying make-up for video, T.V., film and stage Applying a structural make-up using crèmes, highlights and shadows to depict aging of the face and hands Applying a structural make-up using highlights and shadows to depict beard shadow and beard growth Applying a structural make-up to depict wrinkles, veins, liver spots and broken capillaries Creating and applying make-up which depicts a character’s breakdown by creating effects such as dirt, tears and perspiration. MAKE-UP FOR SPECIAL MAKE-UP EFFECTS This level of the Make-up Program continues to build on the skills learned in the previous level of Stage, Body, TV & Film Make-up. In Special Make-up Effects, students will learn how to create illusions through the use of make-up and professional products such as latex, variety of waxes and gel. Students will also learn hair laying techniques and application and colouring procedures with regards to bald caps. COURSE OBJECTIVES • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Refining the application of structural make-up cremes, highlights and shadows to depict aging of the face and hands Analyzing and comparing professional products and their uses Testing products for allergic reactions on human skin Knowing the current standards of I.A.T.S.E. LEVEL 11

ADVANCED RESUMÉ PREPARATION & JOB SEARCH SKILLS This advanced section focuses on enhancing the students’ interview skills, personal presentation, and effectiveness in answering and asking interview questions with competency and confidence. To achieve the course objectives and to maximize the benefits from this course, active class participation is necessary. COURSE OBJECTIVES • • • • •

Presenting a professional appearance Understanding appropriate business etiquette Preparing and practicing how to effectively and successfully handle different types of interviews (i.e. Informational, one on one interviews or group interviews) Learning how to confidently ask and answer various interview questions Practicing interview role playing exercises

LEVEL 12

AIRBRUSHING This course is an introduction to airbrushing where the student will learn the technical details of using an airbrush, as well as learning the differences with various airbrushes and compressors. The practical application of beauty make-up, fantasy and body make-up will also be reviewed, applied and practiced. The course is designed within a lab environment similar to that in the make-up industry. This allows students the practical hours to refine their airbrushing skills. The daily format is designed to give students the opportunity to practice their time management skills. COURSE OBJECTIVES • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Becoming familiar with the history of airbrushing Learning about the mechanics of airbrushing Understanding the properties of the different types of airbrushing equipment Being able to breakdown, clean and reassemble an airbrush correctly Learning the skills required in the application of make-up with an airbrush Having an awareness of the products available for beauty make-up and body make-up Understanding the concept of masks, shields, templates and fiskets Acquiring the practical skills in airbrushing to do a complete beauty make-up Acquiring the practical skills necessary to apply glamour and fashion make-up Acquiring the practical skills necessary to apply fantasy make-up and body make-up Utilizing the airbrush as a tool for covering tatoos and discolourations Experimenting with patterns, textures and tatoos Applying airbrush applications on hair using the correct procedures Designing and creating a character chart for airbrush application Developing time management skills



LEVEL 13

MAKE-UP FOR PROSTHETICS This course is designed to introduce the student to the procedures of life casting, mold making techniques, sculpting, creating gelatin appliances and gelatin prosthetic application. Students will acquire valuable theory and will actively participate in conception, creation and completion of a gelatin appliance for make-up purposes. The student will create a flesh-toned character for their portfolio. COURSE OBJECTIVES • • • • • • • • • • • •

Learning about the materials and tools required for life casting and prosthetic application Understanding the anatomy of the human face for character design Having knowledge of the safety and health factors when working with prosthetics Doing a comprehensive life cast of the face to the neck Correctly preparing the model for prosthetic application Preparing detailed character charts Learning and applying the techniques used in pouring the gelatin molds Making gelatin prosthetics correctly Applying gelatin appliances to the model correctly Properly painting the appliance once it is attached to the model to create a flesh tone character Removing the appliance with proper techniques Preparing and executing a final character for a photo shoot



LEVEL 14

FINAL PROJECTS This course is designed to give students the opportunity to work on portions of the program they need practice with, to further refine their professional make-up skills and to explore their creativity. This make-up module has been structured to accommodate all areas of the curriculum with a comprehensive breakdown of each. The student will choose an independent final project. The goal of this final project is to execute a make-up from beginning to end including concepts, sketches, character charts, script excerpts, design, references, products/ materials and procedures. COURSE OBJECTIVES • • •

Reviewing make-up applications from each module within the Make-up Diploma Program Creating, executing and documenting a make-up concept of a specific industry discipline for a photo shoot Including reference material, visuals and make-up breakdown of the independent final project

LEVEL 15

ART & TECHNOLOGY PORTFOLIO PRESENTATIONS Students learn how to combine their creative talents with technology. Students develop their skills and creativity by learning how to visually communicate their make-up looks using digital graphic design tools. Learn how to acquire digital camera images and scan photos to optimally match the visual medium for print and web. Students will be able to create their own digital portfolio presentations with Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft PowerPoint. They will be able to produce or print various finished images for their portfolio for professional presentation and for marketing their talents and developing industry connections. COURSE OBJECTIVES • • • • • • • • • • • •

Understanding the planning process to design a successful digital portfolio Gaining knowledge of the use of the Macintosh computer using the Mac operating system Learning how to acquire digital content & images from various sources (camera or CDROM) Learning how to scan printed images Gaining a knowledge of how to optimize images for different media (print, Web, CD) Having a working knowledge of image handling using Photoshop Understanding how to perform various photo retouching techniques Creating and producing a personalized business card Producing 6 (or more) retouched images using Photoshop skills Producing a dynamic PowerPoint slide presentation using finished images and music Formatting digital files for CD backup and prepare for professional outputting to print Printing a finished business card design and 2 retouched images

GRADUATION •

Upon successful completion of all Make-up levels, satisfactory attendance and conclusion of all financial requirements, students will graduate with a Diploma in Make-up Artistry
