PROLOGUE

"The objective-subjective distinction was helpful to frame the definition of architecture." But architectural creation should not be a confrontation between objective and subjective. Architecture serves a purpose, that is useful in life. Conducting on-site research and observation of urban lives are always beneficial in exploring the sociality and interdisciplinary nature of architecture. Imagination is crucial if we want to maintain this idea of usefulness, rather than a dull, functional idea. The city is a tool for working and living, but the experience of being in the city is also like a novel - a novel about our own lives. That's what architects do.

STEPPING STONE Renovation and Expansion of Campus Building Type: Individual Academic Work Date: 2018 Spring Location: Nanjing,China Instructor: Prof.Chuanfei Yu The staircase is not only a series of elevation changes, but also a good display space, breaking the barriers of the room, rich in layers and open enough to exaggerate interaction. In an unconventional, open and active space, students can relax and communicate with each other, inspiring their inspiration and passion for design and creation.

The Stepping Stone Complex is a hybrid space that combines formal and informal functions. The step-shaped atrium becomes a transitional space, from public to private, from lively to quiet, from old to new. This transformation redefines the identity of the back building as a space attached to the campus, with the old structure becoming a receptacle for cultural events and an active hall.

ONION CITY Urban renewal of high-density blocks Type: Individual Academic Work Date: 2019 Autumn Location: Nanjing,China Instructor: Prof.Zheng Wang There are a large number of large blocks with high functional mixing degree and construction density in the old city of Nanjing. The space environment is rich and dynamic, but there are also some problems such as disorderly space environment and low quality. Based on the reality, the work studies the hierarchical division of function-space, and discusses the possibility of the material space form of the hierarchical functional blocks and the way of intensive development through the redesign of the existing old blocks.

Layers of Streets

Commercial Corridor

Adhere to the development concept of high density and in the city center, develop the commercial functions as a single line, and create the street life under the ideal state. Connecting community streets and open Spaces, the settlement will become a seamless, barrier-free and integrated extension of the urban business community. The elevated plaza connects the event center with the surrounding neighborhood, creating a welcoming space for people from all walks of life. Nearby residents will find employment opportunities, as well as recreational and cultural facilities. The plan will create a typical environment for the idealized city blocks of the future.

ETERNAL LIFE PSEPHURUS GLADIUS The Memorial Hall of the extincted Yangtze River Type: Individual Academic Work Date: 2020 Spring Location: Nanjing,China Instructor: Prof.Hao Deng Psephurus gladius was a victim of overfishing and dam construction. Just entered 2020, a regrettable and sad news came: the Yangtze River unique species, known as the "king of China's freshwater fish". The last Yangtze River white sturgeon appeared on the yanji stone bank. In front of the shogunate mountain, the building site is located here, the arc emphasizes the clear and beautiful waterline, integrated into the landscape, reconnecting nature and the human world. Yesterday is gone, and it is hoped that people will always remember this ancient creature when they stand at the top of the building and look at the river.

SUPER DIMENSION Large Urban Commercial Complex Type: Individual Academic Work Date: 2021 Spring Location: Nanjing,China Instructor: Prof.Yimin Guo Japanese artists announce that art and commerce will be blended; and in fact, they are surprised by the rigid hierarchy of "high art". As applied to architecture, "superflatness"derives from a mixture of eastern and western traditions. The idea of superflat implies a way of perceiving space and dimensionality that is distinctive to contemporary architects. The world of the future might be like the topic — super dimension.

Axonometric Projection Diagram

The picture on the left is a small lottery kiosk next to the entrance hall of the mall, which witnesses the same people, activities, time and space as a large urban commercial complex. Crowded shopping malls and busy streets are very common pictures of modern urban life, blurring the boundaries between high and low cultures, we live closely with each other in the same material space, depicting a 2.5-dimensional space between two and three dimensions, emphasizing inner flatness rather than pure depth.
