Composer’s Note

Clarinets, math, and experimentation. Pink noise, the golden ratio, focusing your articulation and phrasing to be as gentle as an early-morning, Gilmore-Girls-Worthy, snow. That’s what this piece is all about. When my friend Grayson was graduating from college during the COVID-19 Lockdowns and we held out hope he’d get to have a chamber piece on his recital, he wanted something that took the parts of Music Theory IV that he loved but embodied the gentleness we all needed that winter. The hugs we tried to send eachother through the hills of snow when our music school community hadn’t been able to hug eachother in 10 months. It’s a simple piece from a time when life was too simple because the world was too complicated.
