Notes Round for Three Muses was inspired by a poem by David Wagoner "Round for the Muses" quoting Picasso, "to draw you must close your eyes and sing", the poem "Heartbeat" by Rainer Maria Rilke and the ancient Greek Muses. The piece is a cross between a concert work and a performance art piece, where the performers play their instruments and also speak, sing and move. There are possibilities for structured improvisation, staging, visual projection and creative lighting. There are 3 sections loosely associated with the three ancient Muses: I. MELETE (muse of meditation), II. AOIDE (muse of voice and song) and III. MNEME (muse of memory). This work was commissioned by a consortium of percussionists, organized by Yun Ju Pan. The musical materials were initially informed by recordings of Yun Ju Pan and ensemble members improvising on various instruments and recordings of Yun Ju Pan singing. With gratitude to the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts for providing invaluable time and space to create this work, and to Manfred Fischbeck for his translation of the Rilke poem. Andrea Clearfield Performers' Notes Maintain the indicated tempo markings so that the live playing will line up with the electronic tracks as much as possible. Different colored lights may be designated for each section and or projected images. Creative staging is encouraged.
Duration: ca. 15 minutes

There are possibilities for structured improvisation, staging, visual projection and creative lighting. . There are 3 sections loosely associated with three ancient Muses: I. I. MELETE (muse of meditation), II. AOIDE (muse of voice and song) and III. MNEME (muse of memory). This work was commissioned by a consortium of percussionists, organized by Yun Ju Pan. The musical materials were initially informed by recordings of ensemble members improvising on various instruments and recordings of Yun Ju Pan singing. With gratitude to the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts for providing invaluable time and space to create this work, and to Manfred Fischbeck for his translation of the Rilke poem.
