MEDIA KIT

ABOUT US

Seen is a journal of film, art, and visual culture, dedicated to platforming nuanced and rigorous writing by and about Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities globally. We are published in print twice per year by BlackStar Projects, home of the annual BlackStar Film Festival.

Each issue blends the intellectual rigor of scholarly journals with the slick, creative aesthetics of magazine culture. Now in our fifth year of publication, Seen provides a consistent platform to uplift creative, challenging, and innovative storytelling from both emerging and established voices. With the number of outlets for cultural criticism rapidly declining, we play a vital role in building and maintaining an archive of compelling analysis and commentary on visual media across the globe.

“It’s important that Seen is beautiful. Part of what makes people archive things is because they find them precious. For the people who get them into their hands, we want them to hold onto them. We hope they’re here 200 years from now.”
— MAORI KARMAEL HOLMES, FOUNDING EDITOR

“We really want people to enjoy reading – to have it on their co ee table or have it at their o ce so they can flip through the pages – and that means the pages have to feel good.”

— MAORI KARMAEL HOLMES, FOUNDING EDITOR
