welcome enjoy the planning!

E

verything you need to create your perfect wedding soiree can be found right here in Langley. The scenery most definitely holds it own from the stunning Golden Ears in the distance to the beaches of the Bedford Channel. Choose from four distinct seasons each offering a fresh, new backdrop for photos. The venues range from grand to charming. Fashion has arrived in full force in recent years… have you popped into a Langley boutique lately? Many of your favourite local eateries cater. The quality of local cuisine can hold a candle to any metropolitan affair. And one last thing: the vendors… the quality of talent, vision and creativity is supreme. So here is a challenge, although not much of one. Stay local. Hire local talent. Use a local venue. Use local fields as your photo backdrop. Buy local produce for the feast. Use local flora and fauna for the greenery. Use Fort Langley for almost anything, from ceremony to photographs and the reception. Why not even try the new Golden Ears bridge for photos? Choices abound, and you don’t need to drive far to find them. Everything is right here in your backyard. Take a look around town. You might just find the one thing you’ve been searching far and wide for. Established 1972 The Langley Times. H

ow does stress creep into what should be a day of romance? The fact that you are feeding and entertaining every loved one and dear friend you’ve ever had might have something to do with it. So many duties taking you away from the reason you are doing all of this (yes, your husband to be), so little leftover time to enjoy the un-wed days. Take time to connect, time to relax, time to reflect, dream and daze. Do away with anxiety and replace it with romance. Your wedding only happens once, and as many brides

will recall, you may look back on this time and feel a pang of memory, that you’ve had your day. You’ve spent so many hours, from childhood to present, dreaming of this day… how it should look, sound, taste and feel, and once it is planned, played out and gone, the dreaming stops. Known as ‘Wedding nostalgia’, it is not a feeling that pre-wed brides often anticipate. Many a bride will tell you from experience… enjoy this stage, make your dreams happen and make sure to bring him with you every step of the way.

WEDDING • BABY • EVERY GIFT OCCASION This is just the beginning of a marvelous journey.

n recent years, somewhere in the planning stages, amongst all the flowers and fabric, china, gifts, showers, photos and cake, we’ve forgotten how to really receive guests. That’s what it is, after all, a reception. It need not be lavish, just sincere. A few ideas follow on how to bring back the love and show your guests their company is appreciated:  make sure a clear map of the route to the venue is included with your invitations, with parking instructions.  it may be old fashioned, but a receiving line gives you a chance to look each guest in the eye and thank them for coming. It also gives the guests the opportunity congratulate you. Most guests would

love to speak with you, but might not feel important enough to take some of your time at the reception. Don’t leave them feeling as if they’ve been rude by not chatting: give them this opportunity, and make it voluntary.  the sign in table should not be rushed. For those guests who choose to leave a note for you, provide multiple pens and stationery. Too often, the line-up of people waiting for the book and the pen hurries guests into writing one quick blurb when they really have a few sincere thoughts to convey. Rather than one book or photo frame to write on, provide sheets of stationery and a box to deposit them in.  at the sign in table, make it obvious where the gifts can be left and where the coats can be hung. If necessary, have a family member or wedding attendant there to assist. No guest likes to wander in not knowing where to go or what to do.  if not already listed in the invitation, post or provide a program of events. Let guests know when to expect dinner, cake, speeches, bouquet toss, and any other times they might not want to miss.  provide a box for cards, and label it. Make sure it is secured.  post a seating plan. Include last names, so guests can figure out relations.  make sure your guests are comfortable. Water should be available on the tables, and mark access to outdoor smoking areas.  wait until all your guests have arrived before making your entrance. Have your best man or emcee co-ordinate this.  no-one likes a long list of lengthy speeches. If you have more than two speeches planned, space them out after dinner.

if it’s in your budget:  provide small toys for children at their place settings. Parents will thank you.  provide trivia cards or a small icebreaker at each table. Guests who aren’t acquainted will have an excuse to chat.  provide light blankets for outdoor receptions if it’s chilly. If it’s hot, rent a few fans for the area.  have the bar open.  light appetizers before the reception kicks into full gear will keep people satisfied enough to enjoy the speeches and pre-dinner chat  inform the caterer or servers of any special dietary needs of individual guests ahead of time.

local

fare Langley and the Fraser valley are ripe with locally grown produce. When planning your meal for your guests, opting to go local is easy. Many local caterers already support local producers. Simply expressing your preferences to your venue or chef can ensure your ingredients are fresh and local. Langley has local beef, turkey, chicken, pork, salmon, berries, nuts, wine, flowers, chocolate, fruit and more. A great way to discover local farmers and Langley’s bounty is to head to the farmers’ market held at Kwantlen college. It runs May 26 until Oct 6, 2010 on Wednesdays from 3-7pm. In theme with staying local, make sure to visit Langley’s Bridal fairs to visit your friendly Langley wedding vendors. Three shows to note are:  Fraser Valley Wedding Festival on Sunday, March 7, 2010 from 11am to 3pm at The Coast Hotel & Convention Centre, located at 20393 Fraser Highway. Admission is free.  Welcome Wagon Langley’s Bridal Showcase, Monday February 15, 2010, at 6:30 at the Langley Events Centre, located at 7888-200th Street. Admission is free.  Langley Bridal Show. Three dates: April 6, July 6 and October 7, 2010. Admission is free. Times and locations vary. Go to www.langleybridalshow.com for details.

bare bones budget –

posh feel

W

hen a big budget is not in the cards, small luxuries can lend a posh feel to an otherwise bare bones event.  consider inquiring about a deal on accommodations for your guests at an upscale hotel. Many hotels offer special rates when multiple guests book at the same hotel, or offer a Wedding package. Include these details in your invitation envelopes.  ask your local Langley limousine driver if they’ll provide a valet service for your guests. The valet is at no cost to you... he’ll be performing the service for the tips received from guests. The trade-off here is that you’ll need to arrive before all of your guests, so the driver is free to valet as guests arrive.  as guests enter, have a family member or friend on hand to check their coats. You can rent a coat rack for a small fee if your venue doesn’t provide one.  for atmosphere, skimp on expensive flowers, and add extra candles. Especially placed close to mirrored or reflective surfaces, 10 large candles will have more impact than flowers will, especially in the evening.  a small courtesy tray in the restroom is always welcomed. Items to include are: hairspray, bobby pins, perfume/ cologne, breath mints, pain reliever, a Tide pen, a sewing kit and tissues.  if your ceremony is outdoors in warm weather, have a carafe of ice water and glasses, with lemon wedges and cucumber available for guests. Paper fans for the ladies can also lend a nice touch.  handkerchiefs for Mothers of the Bride and Groom can be placed on their chairs before the ceremony.  if you are renting cutlery and glassware, take the time to wrap each set in a napkin ( you can easily create and print “monogrammed” napkin rings on paper). Place all cutlery and glassware at the place settings rather than having guests pick them out of a tray at the buffet line.  have decorative bowls of candy placed at the ceremony and then moved to the reception. In-season fruit displays can also add colour and are a healthy option.

angley hosts some of the largest (and smallest) and best spas and salons around, with famous Canadian colorists, industry pioneers and skilled technicians to cater to your every need. Doctorrun laser beauty-med clinics, full retreat day spas, and of-the-moment colors and cuts are all here. Don’t leave town to get prepped. Stress less, and drive less. Precious hours on the morning of your wedding are not to be wasted in the car. Use them instead to relax while your local beauty magician works their magic. Most salons and spas not only have packages to cater to wedding parties, but will also accommodate individual requests- Last year, a Langley bride had identical custom hairpieces made for each bridesmaid. On the big day, the pieces were simply attached to the girls’ ponytails. Less time and less stress! Langley’s top stylists tend to book up rather quickly

he idea of inviting many young children to their wedding can be something of a worry, even more so when all the children get together on the big day. With all the excitement, the situation can quickly get out of control, but there are plenty of fun and practical solutions to keep them occupied. This situation can be tackled in two different ways. On the one hand you could choose the option of organizing a ‘kid’s corner’ for the younger generations, with a different menu and special entertainment and activities. This option calls for a good deal of planning, a generous budget and a certain amount of preparation. You’ll need to ensure you appoint an adult to be present who doesn’t mind missing the ‘adult’ function. If this scenario appeals to you, why not ask someone you have confidence in to become the designated baby sitter for the occasion? If you decide to go this route it would be preferable to reserve

an area dedicated to all the children and provide toys or art supplies. This surprise is a guaranteed success with children. Alternately, you can integrate the children into the celebrations. Children need to feel they are useful, to feel they are part of the grown-up world. To do this, they could give a helping hand when it’s time to serve the hors d’oeuvres. Once the dancing has started, they could be given the task of going around the tables asking the guests to write down their favourite songs on a piece of paper which the children would then give to the DJ. In other words, it doesn’t need much imagination for them to be very helpful. Some small quiet games, or bubbles and coloring books at their place setting can also help them to enjoy the event as much as the adults.

iving in the beautiful Wet Coast, there is always a chance of rain, even in the dog days of summer. (Especially, as legend has it, if your wedding date corresponds with the opening weekend of the PNE). Here are a few hints and tips on staying drip-free:  Rule number one: Waterproof mascara and makeup. Consider having airbrushed makeup, which comes in waterproof consistency. This will also guard against drops that may fall from your eyes...  Large umbrellas for every wedding party member. Provide matching umbrellas (great in photos) or request each member bring their own.  Plan for a covered ceremony. Most local venues can switch over a ceremony site to their covered option very quickly. Set up in the uncovered site, and let the venue staff know ahead of time that they have permission to move it inside if it starts to rain. A second option is to rent a tent. If it does happen to sprinkle prior to the ceremony, make sure the ushers have towels to wipe off wet chairs for the guests prior to seating.  If you forego a tent or an indoor option, make sure you provide a large clear tarp for any sound equipment you have set up. Don’t

risk losing your damage deposit on rented sound equipment. If you’ve hired a DJ, he is responsible for covering his own equipment.  Plan for a covered area for photos. The storefronts in Fort Langley make a charming covered backdrop.  Bring a towel to place on wet benches/chairs during your photo shoot.  Even if you don’t usually use it, go heavy on the hairspray.  Bring plastic cling wrap and pins. Use this to pin to the hem of your dress at the train. Tall grasses and car door sills can easily soil the train during the photo shoot. No bride likes a dirty train during her first dance.  Bring shoeshine cloths for the men, to wipe spots and mud off of shoes.  Provide a covered area for gifts and the sign-in table. If you’ve assembled a good team of wedding professionals for your day, rain shouldn’t be a big problem. Langley wedding vendors have done it all before in the rain, and know how to make it work. Don’t let it get you down, but do plan for it to happen.

ou’ve got the ring on your finger and you’ve started planning your perfect wedding day. When booking the venue, you’ve walked through the space; you’ve tasted the caterer’s cuisine and smelled the scents of the flowers for your bouquet. Now how do you check out your photographer? Sure you’ve met, booked and looked at his/her work, but how well do you gel? How do you make sure your images are everything you ever hoped for? The latest trend for many couples is Engagement Shoots. This is a great way to get to know your photographer and get a feel for what you can expect on your special day. Whether it be in the same spot that he proposed, a deeply meaningful place to the both of you or a crazy idea you’ve been dying to capture in print. What better way to “try out” your photographer? Getting to know what you like and don’t like ahead of time can be a real time saver on a day when time really matters. What are your most flattering angles? Learn tricks and tips to getting your desired results. Form that bond between you and your photographer and watch how comfortable and easy it all comes together when you really need it to. Use these images on your thank you cards or in the ever popular “Bride and Groom Slideshow” during the reception. How about on your “Save the Dates” or enlarged and framed near your guest book table? The possibilities are as endless as the shoots themselves. You’ve taken the time to research, touch, taste and smell. How wonderfully gratifying it would be to have peace of mind knowing that you can scratch that little question mark off beside “photographer” on your long list of wants and wishes. When booking your photographer be sure to ask about engagement shoots. If they aren’t offered as part of their packages inquire about the cost of having one done. As well, the Engagement Album has also become quite popular. Ask about the choices they might have. Why not have the best of both worlds - beautiful images and peace of mind? Can you really put a price on that? ~ Submitted by Hollie George of imaging1 photography, langley
