Everybody Deserves A Smile campaign up and running for 2023 Olivier Laurin Record staff

The Everybody Deserves A Smile (EDAS) campaign is up and running for another season, and the committee is putting the call out for community help.

2023 marks the 20th year for the campaign - and 16th in the Comox Valley.

EDAS originally started in Edmonton when Chantal Stefan, now a Grade 1 teacher at École Puntledge School, and three friends distributed handmade bags full of socks, cookies, and Christmas cards throughout Edmonton’s back alleys to spread a little Christmas cheer. “(20 years ago), I saw a man rummaging through a garbage bin and I had this really strong feeling of love to help them,” said Stefan.

“I gathered three friends at that time, (and we made some bags in which we put) some sugar cookies, a pair of socks and a little written note made out of construction paper.

“We made a total of 88 little bags and hung them on garbage bins with the intent of making somebody smile and they disappeared overnight.”

Stefan baptized the gifts ‘bags of hope.’

What started as a one-off idea to send out positive vibes to those who needed them has turned into a multi-school, multi-city initiative, impacting the vulnerable across Western Canada.

Present in six cities including Comox Valley, Campbell River, Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Powell River, and Red Deer, Alta., this ever-growing initiative is set to help more than 3,000 people in need this year.

for catering to half of this population. “(Out of the) 1,500 people, 1,050 of those care packages will be (handed out locally),” said Stefan. “We will take just over 200 bags to Victoria and over 200 to East Hastings (Downtown Eastside, Vancouver).”

This year’s EDAS campaign, based at Puntledge School, will receive support from more than 1,000 students across 22 schools in the Valley, distributed among 88 classes.

Led by Stefan and a dedicated team of Grade 7 student ambassadors - Pi, Magnolia, Lily, and Mya - the team is working tirelessly to ensure everything is completed on time.

“We make posters that we’re handing out so that more people know about what we do and can donate (to our cause),” said Pi. “We also help younger students (assemble) the bags during our packaging days,” added Lily.

“It really breaks my heart looking at people on the streets and realizing they don’t have

a home to go to at the end of the day,” said Mya. “I can’t imagine what it would be to be hungry and cold.”

“I hope that they are happy (to receive those bags) and feel joy in their heart,” said Lily.

Stefan urges the Comox Valley community to donate woollen socks, toques, mitts/gloves, and scarves, before the last day for collecting donations on Dec. 5.

“Our greatest focus at the moment is men’s toques and then scarves for women, men, and non-binary people,” said Stefan. “Anything that’s coming second-hand, we definitely welcome it, but it has to be in perfect condition.”

The organizers are requesting XL sizes for men and non-binary people, and medium sizes for women.

Once all donations are received and packaged, students will take the streets from Dec. 9-12 to hand out their ‘bags of hope.’

Donations drop boxes are present at the following schools: Ecole Puntledge Park, Courte-

nay Elementary, Valley View Elementary, Lake Trail Middle School, Huband Elementary, Queneesh Elementary, Miracle Beach Elementary, Cumberland Community School, NIDES School, Ecole Robb Road, Arden Elementary, Aspen Elementary, Hornby Community School, G.P. Vanier, Mark. R. Isfeld, Highland Secondary, as well as Phil and Jennie Gaglardi Academy Other community donation drop box locations are situated at the Comox Community Centre, Comox Library, Courtenay Library, Starbucks (near Boston Pizza), Uptown Yarns, Coastal Community Credit Union (near Superstore), Evergreen Club (Florence Filberg Centre), RE/MAX Realty in Courtenay, Studio IPF: Inner Pursuit Fitness, and Cumberland Library.

For those who prefer financial contributions, EDAS offers e-transfers at donate2ComoxValley@edas.ca Cheques, made payable to ‘EDAS’ or ‘Everybody Deserves A Smile,’ are also accepted. “(It’s fantastic) watching students so eagerly wanting to step into this work, give up recess, grow compassion, and explore their leadership skills,” said Stefan. “It’s also super inspiring to see our staff and students lean into this work and make a difference.”

Stefan notes that a small act of compassion can make a big difference in someone’s life.

“A lady last year pulled me into her apartment and showed me all the EDAS cards that she had gotten over the years and she was just so thrilled to share this,” said Stefan. “It meant so much to her.

“Our hope (is to make) people feel like they matter and that they’re seen.”

Three takeaways from the Nov. 22 Courtenay council meeting — council adopted a garbage enforcement policy, approved a third reading on the Lannan Road zoning bylaw, and adopted a new building code bylaw.

Garbage enforcement policy As Courtenay shifts into its new automated pick up program, the government plans to enforce rules. The rules surround how citizens sort their recyclables, garbage and organics.

The change to automated garbage trucks may bring increased “contamination” in city garbage — defined as garbage in recycling, or recycling

in garbage and so on. This is a problem as the city wants waste streams to be more efficient, rather than less efficient. Staff or contractors will be investigating citizens’ garbage cans to enforce better habits to reduce contamination.

Starting in January, an enhanced program will send staff out to wander neighbourhoods and inspect carts. Also in the coming year, new garbage trucks will be equipped with tracking technology that allows the city to track which households are not following the rules.

The tracking system will feed citizens’ info into a system of escalating enforcement from the government. The system, according to Courtenay’s policy, starts with stickers that say “OOPS!” and can end with daily $200 fines and revoking garbage services to the citizens’ houses while

still charging taxes for the service.

Council voted to adopt the policy, in anticipation of it supporting the new bylaw, which is yet to be voted into effect. As the new collection service will start in January, the bylaw that makes the system official will likely appear on the only council meeting in December, on Dec. 6.

Lannan Road rezoning passes third reading The bylaw aiming to rezone a large property for development at Lannan Road was given third reading.

The project is seeking to rezone the area to allow for urban residential development near Crown Isle. Further review will be necessary before the bylaw is final.

Council voted unanimously, while Coun. Evan Jolicouer did not vote after declaring a conflict of interest. Jolicouer announced he was an advisor to the board of Dawn to Dawn, which would receive support from Courtenay if the zoning bylaw passes.

Building code bylaw adopted Council voted unanimously to pass Building Bylaw No. 3114.

Inside the bylaw are new regulations for construction, raising the level of energy-efficiency required in new buildings. Multi-use-residential buildings such as apartments, and houses both jumped up one step on the BC Energy Step Code, meaning developers will need to invest more into eco-friendly builds going forward.

Comox Valley mayors react to speculation tax expansion announcement

The Comox Valley is among the targets as the provincial government announced it is expanding the speculation vacancy tax to 13 municipalities, including tourism-friendly Courtenay, Comox and Cumberland.

The tax effective Jan. 1, 2025, Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon and Finance Minister Katrine Conroy announced on Friday, Nov. 24.

“The speculation and vacancy tax is working. We’ve seen thousands of empty condos return to the rental market in Metro Vancouver alone,” said Conroy. “While some would cancel the speculation tax altogether and let speculators back into our housing market, we will be expanding it to additional communities next year, and we’ll continue to strengthen it to help provide much-needed homes for people and families.”

Exemption eligibility is based on how owners use their property during the year. For example, if a property owner uses their unit as a principal home, rents it out for more than six months

The income raised through the tax is spent on affordable housing in the regional districts where the tax is applied, which aligns with the goals of council to build our affordable housing reserve.”

Throughout the Comox Valley (again, according to the 2021 census) there were 2,473 vacant homes in the region in 2021.

The provincial government introduced the speculation and vacancy tax in 2018 as an annual tax paid by some owners of residential properties in certain parts of B.C. It aims to discourage housing speculation and people from leaving homes vacant.

The tax currently sits at two per cent of the property’s assessed for people who do not pay the majority of their taxes in Canada or 0.5 per cent for Canadian citizens or permanent residents who pay the majority of their taxes in Canada. Monies raised through the tax support affordable housing and 99 per cent of homes in B.C. are exempt.

According to the provincial government, the tax has raised more than $313 million for affordable housing in regional districts where it applies since 2018. Citing an independent review, the tax has created more than 20,000 homes in Metro Vancouver alone.

Salmon surveying provides DFO with invaluable information Olivier Laurin Record staff

On the cold and misty morning of Nov. 24, Mikala Wheeler woke up in the wee hours while most of the Valley was still asleep. She packed her lunch and stuffed her dry suit and snorkelling equipment into the back of her SUV. At 6 a.m., she boarded the Powell River ferry en route to the Theodosia River for the last time this season. For almost every week since August, the woman led a crew of three other members to survey the salmon population of this remote watershed.

For Wheeler, a registered professional biological technician at Courtenay’s Current Environmental, these weekly assignments meant embarking on a 14-hour journey, travelling more than 160 kilometres on highway, water, and logging roads.

On her way to the survey site, she stopped at the Tla’amin Salmon Hatchery. There, she transferred all her gear into a boat to continue her long trek with three other members of the Nation - Simon George, Richard Hackett, and Johnson Adams.

After a 20-minute boat ride, the crew of four tied the boat to a frost-covered pier giving access to an active logging road.

Jumping in a truck that was already parked there, Wheeler, George, Hackett, and Adams, slowly made their way to the starting point of their survey on one of the many arms of the Theodosia River.

At 10 a.m. sharp, the team of four got out of the truck and eventually divided into two teams: one swimming and one walking.

As for Hackett and Adams, they started their 10-kilometre river walk a little further down the road.

“Essentially, (the snorkelling crew swims for) an approximately 2.5-kilometre stretch of the Theodosia River during which they basically enumerate and identify the species of salmon (present in the river),” explained Wheeler. “We also try to notice if there are any kind of things that are noteworthy.

“The walking crew is very much the same thing. They count the (salmon) while keeping an eye on things.”

That day, both teams cumulatively counted 600 salmon - most of which were cohos. This

number is but a fraction of the 3,000 salmon the four counted at the peak of the season in August.

Contracted by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Wheeler has to provide these weekly numbers to the ministry for two main reasons.

With this hard data, DFO issues a public weekly bulletin, informing the public about the state of salmon in the region and providing general notes to inform different stakeholders about commercial and recreational fisheries.

Wheeler further explained that this same data provides the information needed by DFO to conceive the regional salmon stock assessment for the upcoming year.

Despite it being her first year on this specific

project, the technician observed a trend that alarmed experts who had previously surveyed the river.

“The first survey we did, we had two people from DFO, who have been long-term crew leads on this project, come out with us, and they were both flabbergasted at how low the flow (was),” said Wheeler. “I remember just standing and saying: ‘I’ve never ever seen the Theodosia this low.’”

Besides this one glaring detail, the crew lead mentioned that everything went ‘smoothly’ adding that “it was a pleasure to work with the Tla’amin Nation,” which provided the team lead with invaluable help.

“Logistically speaking, it is so difficult to mobilize this kind of survey on a weekly basis,” added Wheeler. (Fortunately for us), the Tla’amin Nation is already set up (to go out there) because of the Guardian program.

“They also have a ton of local knowledge, a really unique perspective, and know the area very well.”

In retrospect, despite the exhausting nature of these 14-hour-long shifts, the crew lead regarded herself as fortunate to have been part of such a unique work experience and looked forward to continuing it for years to come.

“I really enjoyed this type of work. It’s such a pleasure to be able to see such a faraway area and have kind of an intimate knowledge of this place that I have no business being otherwise,” said Wheeler.

“It was also a pleasure to work with the (Tla’amin) First Nation in general. I find them very grounding and they’re generally just a happy crew that really cares about their environment.”

ou might have heard about the new trash cans, but did you hear about the staff searching through your new trash cans?

Yes, it’s the city’s way of saving the planet – one garbage audit at a time. Starting January, “contamination management staff aAmbassadors) will be out in the community on a daily basis monitoring recycling bins for contamination.”

The city is launching programs to find out if you’re chucking recycling in the trash, or trash in the recycling, or organics in the trash, or trash in the organics, et cetera.

Anything that does not belong is called “contamination.” The ambassador program will focus on your recycling.

“The inspection efforts will range from proactively lifting lids… to a complete emptying of a recycling bin,” reads the report.

Also proposed for the new garbage system: if citizens are found with contamination at garbage day, they will be placed in a tracking system. The city will have the right to search your carts, and can fine you for obstructing them.

As the garbage system is planned to roll out in January, the vote to finalize Bylaw 3113, 2023 will likely take place at the next, and only scheduled council meeting on Dec. 6. Show up! You’ll only have yourselves to blame if you don’t.

Tax hikes will turn Royston into ‘Richton’ in the next decade Dear editor, One will have to be pretty wealthy to reside in Royston in the next 10 years.

The Comox Valley Regional District announced that water rates and parcel tax will increase starting in 2024 and continue through 2036, with construction in 20262027.

So, this project will be concurrent with the

sewer extension, which is also slated to be built in 2026-2027.

With the projected water cost increase of $809 over the current year, and the potential cost of up to $2,350 for the sewer tax and maintenance, in 2027 some households could be looking at a $3,159 surcharge for these services on top of the regular property tax.

This doesn’t even factor in the projected one-time cost of between $2,500-$8,500 each household must pay for sewer hook-up and septic decommission — never mind what mortgage rates will look like at that time.

Responding to a question posted on the CVRD’s engagement website manager of liquid waste planning Darry Monteith says “The CVRD understands that any rate in-

crease is difficult for ratepayers.”

If that’s true, could they not have planned the timeline of these projects better? How are already-struggling households going to manage an almost double tax increase?

And this from a self-described homeless person as well!

There is an empty building at this location which I assume has all the necessary utilities already in place to provide a warm shelter in winter and plenty of room for a dorm. I don’t see why it couldn’t include space for some counselling by health professionals for

those who seek it out.

There is also a fenced-off area for those who prefer to camp. Security would be required similar to that at the Connect Centre presently. Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular returns to the Sid Back in 2006, Katy Bowen-Roberts of Comox found herself sitting in an old country pub in England, dreaming.

With numerous years of experience performing as a singer on stages both in Canada and Europe, she decided it was time to look behind the scenes. This is where her Yellowpoint journey began.

Bowen-Roberts moved back to Canada from England in 2007 ready to begin building this popular show for her home community. It started in a small cozy community hall in the heart of beautiful countryside near the Crow & Gate Pub in Yellowpoint. Patrons travelled from surrounding communities to take in this unique holiday experience. The show can now be found in three larger cities across Vancouver Island.

On Dec. 3 of this year the cast and crew of 18 singers, dancers, musicians, and the creative team will move into the Sid Williams Theatre in Courtenay. They finish their three-week rehearsal process with a final invited dress rehearsal performed to 450 elementary school children from the Comox Valley. This will be followed by four performances at this venue from Dec 4 - 6.

Bowen-Roberts has been working to create this year’s show since February. She begins her process by listening to a great variety of music from classical to rock ’n’ roll, jazz and Broadway.

“There is always so much music to choose from and never enough time in the show,” she said. “I spend many hours selecting a mix of musical genres where the cast can perform different dance and vocal styles. The show is designed to invoke a range of emotions in our audiences and we love putting it together with many dazzling costumes.

“I feel so lucky to be able to bring live music and dance to our island community.”

This year’s singing and dancing extravaganza includes musical medleys of well-known songs by the Rolling Stones, Cat Stevens, George Gershwin and the Beach Boys, songs from the musical Chicago, a collection of sea shanties, Hot Chocolate from the Polar Express, Bing Crosby’s classic White Christmas, as well as many more classical hits and Christmas favourites.

Tap dance professional Lindsay Sterk and owner of Pantuso Dance Studio in Courtenay is back to choreograph and co-direct again this season. The creative team was in Vancouver in June where they auditioned more than 100 singers and dancers.

“It is always such an honour and pleasure to hear and watch so many talented young professional performers,” said Bowen-Roberts.

“The decision-making is always a challenge but we are excited to welcome this year’s cast.

“The majority of our team is based on Vancouver Island this year but we are also excited to welcome performers from Toronto, Edmonton, Vancouver and Wells. The cast will come together three weeks before opening night to rehearse the show in Nanaimo.”

The Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island will sell 50/50 tickets at this year’s show.

Get ready to be swept off your feet this holiday season as the Strathcona Symphony Orchestra (SSO) presents an enchanting December concert that celebrates the magic of Broadway musicals.

Invited Vancouver Island guests, Michelle Johnson, Mathew Baker, Alexander Nicoll, and Finley Catania, will be part of a trip down memory lane, performing well-known holiday classics such as Let it Snow and the Christmas Song, alongside favorite musical selections from traditional to new classics.

Concertgoers will remember Bing Crosby singing White Christmas, Gene Kelly performing in Singing in the Rain, or Grizabella’s bittersweet ballad, Memories, from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, Cats.

“I’ve chosen the theme, Broadway musicals, for this year’s December concert because they are a perfect fit for the festive season,” said Helena Jung, the SSO’s music director. “Broadway musicals are known for their timeless songs, heartwarming stories, and ability to evoke a wide range of emotions. These classic pieces resonate deeply with the holiday spirit and I’m sure that audience goers will be humming or singing their favourite tunes after the performance.”

Audiences will be delighted to also enjoy four singers who call Vancouver Island home.

Johnson is a long-time soprano and mother of five girls who grew up on a farm in Black

Creek. She has performed operatic works and been a soloist with the North Island Choral Society. She is also an Island Voices member and conductor of the Black Creek Children’s Choir.

Nicoll grew up in the Comox Valley and he has worked in theatres across Western Canada as well as in performing in the Comox Valley.

His most recent work includes donning the director’s and choreographer’s hat of Three Legged Dog Production’s Into the Woods.

Baker has performed across North America for the past 20 years, both on the mainland and in the Comox Valley. A Campbell River resident, he recently performed the baker in the local production of Into the Woods as well as being a band member in Elm Street Shakedown and the Strathcona Brass Jazz band.

Catania is just starting her musical theatre career by performing with the Rainbow Youth Theatre, Triple Heat Dance, and the feature role in Comox Valley’s School District Musical, Matilda, The Musical.

Georgia Straight Jazz Society keeps it local for next Comox concert

Catch the rhythmic and electric jazz trio sounds of Ultraviolet on Thursday, Nov. 30 at the Little Red Church.

Ultraviolet is a groovy experimental music project that employs acoustic drums, electric bass, electric guitars (including the tap-style touch guitar), and pretty much a spaceship-worth of effects pedals and gadgets.

Drinking from an ever-flowing, far-reaching, and constantly shifting range of influences, Ultraviolet’s sound has been “hard to pigeonhole.”

Their collective interest in spontaneous composition presents a palette of ever-evolving musical ideas unique to each performance.

Ultraviolet Trio consists of Oscar Robles Diaz (guitars), Brittany Bowman (bass and vocals), and Beau Stocker (drums). These three come from widely different backgrounds both geographically and musically speaking, and their respective paths have taken them to diverse corners of the world and allowed them to share their original music with international audiences. As a result, their combined touring curriculum boasts performance experience in Latin America, Asia, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Canada.

CVHF and partners fundraising for medical imaging equipment With more than half of all health-care encounters at the Comox Valley Hospital requiring medical imaging and the vital role these scans play in informing medical care, the Comox Valley Healthcare Foundation (CVHF) is raising funds for medical imaging equipment during this giving season.

Enhancements to the medical imaging department at the hospital will offer quicker diagnoses, help physicians develop effective treatment plans, and improve the overall care that patients receive.

CVHF is working with other foundations and corporate funding agencies to further their campaign goals. They hope support from the community can provide what is required to ensure the hospital is equipped with the top-of-line diagnostic technology needed at this time.

••• Lataisha Maynard is one of the most powerful women in the Comox Valley.

She has her daughter to thank for that.

Maynard owns Feral Strength Training in Comox.

Had it not been for the birth of her daughter, she may have never reached the successes she now enjoys.

“I got into weight training shortly after my kiddo was born,” said Maynard. “About a year went by and I got postpartum depression really bad. So I ended up just putting her in the basket and going for a walk one day. The next day we went a little farther, and then a little farther again. Then one day we went past a gym and I took a peek inside and there were a bunch of people having a lot of fun. So I thought ‘What about joining?’ I just joined.

That was around 2015.

“I didn’t do any serious weight training for the first two years. I was just doing cardio and working my way through the machines.”

What started as a therapeutic process quickly became more than that.

She eventually was hired at the gym - VI Fitness, in Campbell River. She worked there until the time the company went bankrupt.

“All the locations on the Island shut down, and I was out of a job, and I really missed fitness, the environment, seeing everyone every day… so I thought ‘Why don’t I become a trainer?’ I decided to become a certified personal trainer, and that way I can work in any gym that I want. I will have job security and I will be able to help people at the same time.”

Photo by Ali Roddam Maynard acquired her personal certified trainer accreditation through ACE (American Council on Exercise), then continued her education by acquiring a sports fitness nutrition certification, as well as an orthopedic exercise certificate.

“It just kind of spiralled,” she said, adding that she is not done with the education process.

“There is always learning to be done in this industry. There are so many different strength sports out there, and I want to learn it all.”

Maynard moved to the Comox Valley five years ago, and has since opened Feral Strength Training.

She said she wants to share the joy and empowerment she feels by helping others do the same.

“It’s amazing how strong and powerful it makes you feel. I want others to maximize their potential as well. I want people to be able to look at me as an example and say ‘Wow, she got herself off the couch, from postpartum depression - I can do that too.’

“Fitness is for every age. There is a category for everybody, and I want to make it more accessible for everybody. There are a lot of cool competitions around here and it would be sweet to see some more athletes on the Island.”

Her facility in Comox has everything a person needs for strongman training.

“I’ve got a keg, I’ve got a couple of strongman logs I made myself. I have a yoke, some Atlas stones, so yeah - I just have my clients over here and we practise with all these awkward

heavy things.”

When Maynard is not training at her own facility, she works as a group trainer at BodyNetix.

“Mondays and Thursday I teach the total strength there, which is a fusion of strongman and powerlifting,” she said In addition to learning and teaching, Maynard finds the time to compete.

She is among B.C.’s strongest women, having recently won strongman competitions in Kelowna and Kamloops.

Maynard also holds a Canadian record.

“I hit a national record in deadlift in December of 2022 at a competition in Duncan - 419 pounds,” she said. “My dream is to be a strongman pro one day and get to compete at nationals, or at OSG, which is Official Strongman Games. But I am definitely going to be Canada’s strongest woman.”

Maynard said she would not be able to afford the time away from work to compete if not for her sponsor, Resolute Strength Wear.

“They are a huge help and very active in the community.”

She is encouraged by the number of women she sees getting involved in the sport.

“Strongman is seen as a male-dominated sport, and slowly a few girls have joined and we have seen success… it seems like every year we see more people.”

Maynard said the best is yet to come.

ecently, I’ve been thinking about our local marine supply stores.

I thought about staffing shortages and supply chain issues and interest rates and the competitive monolithic Amazon jungle. We have four dedicated marine businesses in the Comox Valley: collectively, they offer a vast repository of knowledge for the mere asking across the counter. Individually, they are entrepreneurs whose goal is to earn a living by meeting the needs of boaters.

Stuart MacKenzie has owned Comox Marine since 2011.

“We specialize in marine and RV electrical components, and lithium upgrades, and we’re also a Victron distributor, both wholesale and retail,” he said.

Why shop locally?

“I can answer that,” says MacKenzie. “We provide expertise and support that Amazon can’t offer.”

Comox Marine also supports smaller local “business to business” independent tradespeople. Customers can be assisted via an online consult; if necessary, the store may pre-make and ship a product, and then use FaceTime to show the customer how to install it. MacKenzie currently employs two recent Ukraine immigrants to Canada: shopping locally “supports the families who live here.”

“We’re the first stop up the hill,” says Jennifer Martin, describing the distance from Comox Harbour to Desolation Sound Yacht Charters, Services & Marine Supply.

This year, Martin and her husband Merion Martin added the marine supply store to Desolation Sound Yacht Charters, a business they’ve owned since 2012.

described their business as “not just a store,” but as an extensive network of resources, knowledge, and seasonal events available to the community of boaters.

Ed Broughton and Wayne Wyant have owned CV Marine for 14 years. They specialize in power boats up to 35 feet, inboard and outboard. The shop is a full-service repair and parts Mercury Marine and MerCruiser dealer, including a chandlery that also offers shrink-wrapping for boats, the only one in the area.

Broughton spoke about the effects of COVID-19, and how as “people learned to shop differently,” they adapted by balancing an e-commerce website against the cost of stock on the shelves. It’s a transition they’ve made by offering assisted online shopping combined with the CV Marine in-person expertise and in-stock marine products.

Curtis Parker is the general manager of Parker Marine, a business that originally

began as a Qualicum hardware store opened by his grandfather in the 1950s. Today, the business caters to all types of boaters, while specializing in sports fishing, is also recognized as an “elite level” Yamaha dealer.

“We’re big on customer service,” said Parker, who went on to describe his team of qualified staff – parts, technicians, service – with decades of experience and employment with Parker Marine. Again, blending the brick-and-mortar with the cyber-shopper, Parker also offers a “hotline” text feature where customers can send in photos and ask questions.

My teeth are abysmal. I’ve hated them all my life, and I’m almost 60 years old. My marital status is in ‘start over’ stage, and my sister is onto me to do something. She recommends different everything, including my hairdo and my crooked teeth. She thinks a dating site is in my future. What is a ‘Million Dollar Smile’ and what does it cost?

Answer: If we could answer this in less space than this entire page, we would be magicians. The term ‘Million Dollar Smile’ is a phrase used to describe someone with a particularly captivating beautiful smile. Typically it includes straight white teeth and a genuine radiant expression exuding warmth and confidence.

Dental makeovers aren’t the ‘be all and end all’. We’ve witnessed some truly wonderful changes in people following such work, and improving their appearance is often the beginning of a personality transformation, not a sole cause. People who are self-conscious about their teeth tend to not show them off. They often put their hands over their mouth, or try to smile with mouths closed. As they gain confidence after a makeover, they smile and laugh more, and literally walk with more spring in their step (one patient’s words to us, not ours)!

Adult teeth can often be straightened with clear retainers which are well-tolerated and can be removed for eating.

Once straight, any imperfections in finish, colour, and chipping can be modified with fillings or veneers (often called ‘caps’) on one or more teeth. Often, only a few teeth need to be corrected in this manner to make a significant difference. Teeth may be bleached with takehome trays, or an in-office procedure. Costs are all over the map, but often less than expected. Often, quite modest improvements by your dentist can yield a surprising new level of confidence.

We spoke with someone very familiar with these online dating sites, and were told that there are several truisms. #1 is that men scroll through the photos ignoring most profiles. Secondly, for the ‘over 55’ crowd, women outnumber men by 5:1 because women are more organized than men about changing their status. Finally, women outlive men! Straight teeth are preferred by 68% of viewers, male and female.

The smile you refer to is just one aspect of your personality.

It gives onlookers a positive impression of you as a potential ‘match’. Other personal aspects such as apparel and levels of personal fitness are equally as important, and build confidence and images of self-worth.

St. George’s Cookie Walk to support Habitat’s Courtenay build On Sunday, Dec. 10, 2-4 p.m., St. George’s United Church is hosting a Christmas “Cookie Walk” to benefit Habitat for Humanity North Island’s 1375 Piercy Avenue project.

Attendees will pay just $15 cash for a box to fill with a baker’s dozen of cookies— mixing and matching—along the “walk” among tables filled with homemade goodies in the fellowship hall. The fundraiser is only able to accept cash.

Cookies are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Also in the fellowship hall that day, there will be a dozen crafters and/or individuals who make homemade treats (other than cookies). This will make for some easy holiday shopping for those who attend.

BUSINESS Comox Valley public speaker presents on TEDx stage Long-time Comox Valley resident, Monica Parkin, has recently achieved a remarkable milestone by landing a TEDx talk in Denver Colorado.

“It’s a huge honour to be chosen,” says Parkin, “People try for years to get a place on the TEDx stage and this particular event received hundreds of nominations. I’m really humbled.”

Her talk, titled “The Secret Shame of Introverts,” dives into the introverted brain, exploring the neurological differences between introverts and extroverts, and shedding light on the alltoo-common phenomenon of introverts concealing their true selves to conform to societal expectations that favour extroversion.

Parkin is also the author of Overcoming Awkward: The Introvert’s Guide to Networking, Marketing, and Sales, and host of the popular podcast, Juggling Without Balls, where she hosts conversations with women about a diverse range of topics.

Previously, she enjoyed a successful career as a mortgage broker, but has since shifted to a full-time professional speaker and speaking coach. Her TEDx talk, which took place in August, has just been released on the TEDx YouTube channel, making it accessible to a worldwide audience.

Parkin got her start in speaking at the local 60 Minutes Toastmasters Club and is still an active member. She remembers the first meeting she went to.

It took me a few months to get brave enough to go back but I’m glad I did because it’s been an amazing journey.” She still attends weekly and said she probably always will.

“There is always room for improvement and Toastmasters is a great place to try out new speeches.”

In the coming months, Parkin is launching her

own six-week online speaking course designed to fast forward the learning curve and empower anyone with the skills and confidence to speak in public.

“I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to help people bring their ideas to the world.”

Comox Valley Amnesty hosting annual letter-writing campaign Every year Amnesty International supporters around the world mark International Human Rights Day by sending millions of letters and cards.

Comox Valley Amnesty will be at the Courtenay Library on Saturday, Dec. 9, between 1 and 3 p.m. Community members are encouraged to write letters in support of people around the world whose rights are being violated.

These letters put pressure on governments, leaders and decision-makers to take action to protect people’s rights and to bring to justice those who abuse human rights. Every year real change happens because of these letters. People wrongfully jailed are released, abusers are brought to justice and people in prison are treated more humanely. More information about Write for Rights is available at Amnesty.ca.

This year the Comox Valley group will write on behalf of five cases. In Australia, Indigenous community leaders, Uncle Pabai and Uncle Paul (Uncle is a sign of respect in their communities) are advocating for urgent action to protect their homelands in the Torres Strait.

Their homelands and sacred cultural sites are threatened by erosion from rising sea level due to climate change.

In Myanmar, Maung Sawyeddollah, is seeking justice for the suffering and discrimination the Rohingya experienced in the ethnic cleansing by the Myanmar military. He is campaigning for Meta, Facebook’s owner, to take responsibility for algorithms that amplified anti Rohingya incitement on Facebook, fuelling the violence.

He and his community, now in refugee camps in Bangladesh have lost everything and are calling on Meta to pay reparations for its role in the atrocities.

In Poland, Justyna Wydrzynska, is being prosecuted for defending safe abortion. Justyna’s conviction to eight months of community service for “helping with an abortion” sets a dangerous precedent, where activists will not be able to provide information about safe abortions.

In Tunisia, Chaima Issa, is facing years in prison for speaking our against the President when he suspended the parliament and took executive control of the government.

In Canada, people are being encouraged to write to the ask the government of British Columbia to drop the charges against Wet’suwet’en land defenders, listen to Indigenous voices and respect their rights.

Courtenay-raised hockey player wins bronze at national championship Morgan Jackson heading to Boston to play at Northeastern University in 2024 Olivier Laurin Record staff

On Nov. 11, Morgan Jackson proudly returned home, adorned with the bronze medal she earned with her team at the 2023 Nationals Women’s U18 Hockey Championship held in Dawson Creek.

Achieving the second-highest score with 10 points, Jackson was recognized as the tournament’s top forward.

The 20-member squad kicked off the eight-team tournament, which took place from Nov. 5-11, with victories against the Ontario Blue (4-2) and Manitoba (4-2). Although they faced a setback in their third game against the Ontario Red (6-4), the team rebounded with a win against Saskatchewan (5-3) in their fourth match. Despite a loss in the semifinal against Quebec (7-3), Jackson and her team secured a bronze medal by defeating Alberta, 3-1 in the third-place game.

More than a week after the championship, the forward looks back on her participation in the tournament, emphasizing the enjoyable team experience.

“I was super excited to play with this team and everyone was super friendly,” said Jackson. “I think winning bronze made it even better because our team was so close that it (strengthened our) bond.

“It was so fun playing with this team that I really played to the best I could and played with a lot of confidence.”

Back to the Island, the Grade 12 student at Shawnigan Lake School now focuses on completing her senior year before taking off to the prestigious Northeastern University, located in Boston, to which she committed earlier this month.

After receiving numerous invitations since June, Jackson said she settled for Northeastern because of its strong sports legacy and for being home to one of the best Division 1 female hockey clubs in the nation.

“We set up a call with the (university) and I really like talking to the coach,” said Jackson. “(Following this meeting) we set up an official visit to Northeastern. I chose this university because of the campus and how great its hockey program is.”

I played on Canada’s ❝ U18 team last year and I’m hoping to play on it this year in January for the world championships in Switzerland. But my longterm goal would definitely be to make the U22 national team and then the national team.

Unsure of what she wants to study at this point, whether it’s business or sciences, the 17-year-old captain has grand goals in mind for the upcoming years.

“I played on Canada’s U18 team last year and I’m hoping to play on it this year in January for the world championships in Switzerland,” said Jackson.

“But my long-term goal would definitely be to make the U22 national team and then the national team.”

The Comox Valley Raiders won the bantam football provincial championship Saturday in Langley, scoring the game’s final 14 points to beat the Nanaimo Seahawks 22-16.

The Raiders fought through adversity in true championship style.

The Seahawks opened the scoring with the only points of the opening quarter - a 21-yard reception by Everly Knudson for the major 10 minutes into the game. A two-point conversion attempt failed.

The Raiders came within a yard of tying the game with just under five minutes to play in the second, when disaster struck. A secondand-goal from Nanaimo one-yard-line resulted in a fumble on the goal line, recovered by the

Seahawks.

The Raiders’ defence then did its part, forcing a two-and-out. The Comox Valley offence got the ball back at the Nanaimo 31. From there, Jayden Garcha faked an end-around hand-off and ran the other way for the major. Joshua Stanyar ran in a two-point convert, giving the Raiders an 8-6 lead.

Nanaimo regained the lead with 14 seconds remaining in the half, kicking a field goal for a 9-8 lead.

The Seahawks added to their lead with their first offensive possession of the second half, capitalizing on a botched Raiders punt.

Nanaimo got the ball at the Comox Valley 30-yard-line and ran it into the end zone three plays later for a 16-8 lead.

Queue the comeback.

Comox Valley Road Runners’ annual Jingle Bell Run upcoming Run is a fundraiser for the The event starts at 10 a.m.

The annual event raises funds for the Comox Valley Food Bank, and is always a resounding success.

The run is open to members and non-members, runners and walkers. There are two courses this year; the 7.3-kilometre Forest Loop and 3.5-kilometre combined Copland/Seal Loop.

Participants are encouraged to dress up, and Santa will be on hand to visit with the kids.

Comox Valley Kickers fall to Richmond in 2023 rugby championship rematch

The Comox Valley Kickers men’s team travelled to the mainland this weekend for a highly anticipated showdown against Richmond RFC, rekindling the rivalry from the 2023 BCRU Division 3 final.

The showdown occurred at King George Park and the atmosphere crackled with anticipation. Last year’s final saw the Kickers emerge victorious in a nail-biting finish, but fate took an unforeseen turn this time, with the Kickers falling 10-42. Tries were scored by Kai Mills and Will Perry.

From the outset, it was evident that this Richmond team was a different force altogether.

They came into the match with renewed vigour and scored two quick tries back-to-back. They had a strategic game plan that kept the defending champions on the back foot.

As the game progressed, the Kickers tried to mount a comeback but had to play shorthanded due to a yellow card, forcing the team to play with only 14 players for 10 minutes.

Having to focus more on defence didn’t allow for many offensive opportunities. Momentum never seemed to be

Captain Justin Thomson expressed disappointment but remained optimistic.

“It’s a tough loss, but we’ll regroup, learn from this defeat, and come back stronger,” he said. “We will work on the things we need to. This setback will only fuel our determination for the next game and for

the spring season.”

The Kickers currently sit third out of 18 teams in the BCRU Men’s Division 3 league. The Kickers are back in action on Saturday, Dec. 2 at Cumberland Village Park to face off against Castaway Wanderers with a 11:15 a.m. kick-off.

Since the murders in 1989, male violence in Canada and around the world has increased. This violence is so widespread that all women and girls in Canada are affected, and Indigenous women and women with disabilities are disproportionately targeted.

“Please join us at the film and vigil to remember the women and children we have lost, to support those at risk now, and to press for action to ensure a safer world for future generations,” said Heather Ney, executive director of Comox Valley Transition Society.

The film is presented by the World Community Film Festival, the Comox Valley Transition Society, the Comox Valley Art Gallery, and the Women’s Monument Committee.

On Dec. 6, the Transition Society will host a vigil on the plaza of the Comox Valley Art Gallery from noon to 1 p.m. to mark the anniversary of the Montréal massacre and remember all women who have been killed by male violence.

Local groups will honour this year’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women with a Dec. 2 film screening and a Dec. 6 vigil.

Three local groups are co-presenting the documentary Marker of Change: The Story of the Women’s Monument on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2:30 p.m., at the Stan Hagen Theatre of North Island College.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with director Moira Simpson, the film’s producers, and members of the Women’s Monument Committee.

Everyone is welcome and admission is free, with donations to the Comox Valley Transition Society gratefully accepted.

The film tells the story of the seven-year struggle to create “something loving, something permanent” to honour the 14 young women at Montréal’s École Polytechnique who were systematically murdered on Dec. 6, 1989, in what became known as the Montréal Massacre.

Comox Valley Citizens on Patrol Society helps keep community roads safe For more than 25 years, the Comox Valley Citizens on Patrol Society (COPS) has been watching the community’s streets and neighborhoods, as well as acting as the extra eyes and ears for the RCMP, to help deter crime in the Comox Valley.

Statistic show that drivers are 3.6 times more likely to crash if talking on the phone or texting while driving.

“Despite increased awareness and enforcement efforts, many drivers still aren’t getting the message about the dangers of distracted driving,” said chief superintendent Holly Turton, BC Highway Patrol.

“Every time a driver takes their eyes off the road, they put themselves and others on the road in danger.” From 2017 to 2021, nearly 40 per cent of police-reported crashes resulting in injury involve distracted driving as a factor. At least one out of three B.C. drivers admit to using their cell phones upon occasion while driving. Studies have shown that drivers who are talking on their cell phone lose about 50 per cent of what is visually going on around them. Drivers are five times

Members of the Comox Valley Citizens on Patrol Society do a variety of different things to keep crime down in the area.

The COPS van can often be seen along the roadsides monitoring speed, documenting distracted drivers, and observing activities in local parks or high accident-prone sites. COPS has been asked to monitor several streets with suspected speeding, including school zones.

Preparations ongoing for Earl Naswell Community Christmas Dinner SUBMITTED Black Press

The Earl Naswell Community Christmas Dinner is now less than four weeks away, and committee members are hard at work reaching out to potential sponsors and collecting donations.

The dinner, which will be celebrating its 41st anniversary in 2023, offers a full turkey dinner with all the trimmings to anyone who wants one, particularly those who may not otherwise have a warm meal on Christmas Day. More than 100 volunteers will take time out of their own Christmas festivities to prepare, cook, package and deliver 800 meals throughout the Comox Valley on Christmas Day. Who can register?

As the name implies, this is a community dinner; anyone who is in need of a Christmas dinner is welcome to call the Salvation Army Cornerstone Community and Family Services, at 250-338-5133, and register - no questions asked.

“Some community members have been asking what the vetting process is - how do we ensure the meals are all going to those in need?” said Earl Naswell Community Christmas Society (ENCCS) president, Justin White. “But there are no real restrictions - it is a community dinner. It’s an honour system, but we believe in our hearts that very few people would ask for the service if they didn’t need it. It’s not up to us to judge whether people are in need or not.”

Howard, Julia Clare of Comox, passed away at North Island Hospital Courtenay on Thursday November 16th, 2023. She is survived and will be dearly missed by Michael and Chris; daughters Patricia and Penelope; sister Margaret (Barry) Herod and many nieces and nephews. Julia was predeceased by her loving husband Bill, infant son Anthony, sisters Patricia and Noreen, and her parents George and Nora Stack. She was a well-known member of the Comox Valley War Brides Association, spent many years as a cashier at Woodwards and in her leisure, enjoyed knitting, gardening, artwork, particularly painting. Her family knew her affectionally as ‘Sheila’. She will be laid to rest with her husband Bill with a private family graveside service at Courtenay Civic Cemetery in the New Year.

The Greig family is saddened to announce the passing of its beloved mother and granny, Jean Dunlop Greig (nee Guthrie) on November 13, 2023, in Victoria, B.C., following a long (approaching 102 years!) and happy life.

Jean was much loved by her family. She was a caring, helpful and non-judgmental person, who would generally look to the positive and who was always quick to remind one that there was two sides to every story!

Jean was born in Comox BC on February 27th, 1922. She was the youngest and last-surviving child of Ella and Patrick Hugh (“Captain”) Guthrie. She was predeceased by her siblings David, Effie, Patrick (“Pakky”) and Nancy, and by her husband, James Walter Greig (“Jim”).

She is survived by her children Jane Drown (Garry, deceased), Christine Southwick, Nancy Sly (Michael), and Charles (Bernice), numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren - even a great great grandchild! – and many nieces and nephews, all of whom were treasured.

Jean grew up on the family farm in Comox during lean times in the ‘20’s and ‘30’s but had a happy childhood with her siblings. Her tales of exploring the lovely woodlands on and around the farm and her relationships with the family’s various animals, particularly their much-loved milk cow “Sophie Sunbeam” entranced several generations of children. She was an animal and plant lover (particularly rhododendrons) for life - and was always up for a picnic!

Following high school, Jean worked for a time locally before entering nursing at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, obtaining her RN in 1944. It was at the Jubilee where Jean met Jim, who had been invalided home from the UK after serving in the Canadian Artillery during WWII. Upon graduation she began work at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox, memorably recognizing the onset of the great central Island earthquake of 1946 and rushing outside to see the massive Douglas Firs swaying wildly on the hospital grounds. Jean and Jim, both proud products of the Comox Valley, were married in May of 1947.

They began their family in Nanaimo, where Jim was articling for his CA and where their daughters Jane and Christine were born.

In 1954, the family moved to Ocean Falls. It was there that many fond family memories and life-long friendships were made, and Nancy and Charlie were born. As Jim rose through the ranks of Crown Zellerbach Pulp and Paper Company, Jean and Jim raised their children and moved the family between two stays at each of Ocean Falls, Campbell River and Vancouver, where they eventually settled in West Point Grey. In Vancouver, Jean enjoyed volunteering as a docent at the Vancouver Aquarium and VanDusen Gardens and walking her somewhat recalcitrant Scottish terriers in the woods of the University Endowment Lands across the street from the family home. During the 1960’s, the family spent many very happy and shoeless times at their summer cabin at Vaucroft, on

sandy North Thormanby Island, on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, where more close and life-long friendships were made.

In 1986 Jean and Jim realized their dream of retiring on the Gulf of Georgia. They built their final home at Dorcas Point, between Nanaimo and Parksville, and the years both during and after construction were satisfying and productive ones for these two hard workers.

In 2009, they returned full circle, moving to a lovely condominium on Cameron “Island” in Nanaimo, where together they enjoyed watching the comings and goings in the busy harbour until Jim’s passing in 2014. Finally, in 2019, Jean moved southward to Victoria, where she resided in both Atria “The Victorian,” and latterly, in Amica Douglas House, where she received exceptional daily care from the wonderful staff, her dutiful daughters, and Drs. Priya and Ted Rosenberg.

Jean was an avid and skilled gardener and she and Jim were long-time supporters of a number of causes, including Milner Gardens and Woodland, Operation Smile, and SeedChange (formerly Unitarian Services Committee), which they donated to for over 70 years.

In loving memory of Leonard Eastman Chambers January 3rd, 1927 ~November 14th, 2023 Born to Sophie and Edward Chambers, the second of four children, Leonard was delivered at home. They told him later that the Doctor brought him to the house in his black bag. He was raised in Vancouver during the thirties and forties, at a time when it was partly wilderness and farmland. He graduated from Vancouver Tech High School.

Len met Lois at the Cedar Cottage United Young People’s Union social gathering. He was 18 and Lois was 15. Their romance blossomed quickly.

They remained a couple for over 75 years.

Leonard loved the outdoors and he spent many weekends, hiking up to his cabin on Seymour Mtn. From these hikes came many stories of encounters with bears and trees falling during storms. No one would give him a second glance boarding a bus to North Vancouver with his loaded 22 rifle. His passion for the ocean was also evident early in his life. While a teenager he built a kayak and paddled from Vancouver to the Gulf Islands. His love of the outdoors led him to a job as a licensed timber scaler and introduced him to camp life in Squamish and Woss. But a life away from Lois was not in the cards. Taking a job as an apprentice Plasterer, Len had found his trade and passion.

Not being afraid of work, Len and Lois bought a vacant lot on Douglas Rd. in Burnaby. They embarked upon building their home with no mortgage and no loans. Money left over from the weekly paycheque bought the materials needed to build. With the passage of several years and the help of many friends and family, Len and Lois, moved into the house that would be home for over 60 years.

It was a work place accident that broke Len’s ankle. His rehabilitation included swimming and this led to scuba diving. Len’s enthusiasm for diving resulted in him becoming a Scuba Instructor at the downtown YMCA. With the help of a partner, they started Burnaby Divers.

The next project was the construction of a 40 foot Trimaran. If Leonard had anything approaching a fault, it was his overly strong affection for his boat the Triad. His career as a tradesman, included a spell as an Instructor at BCIT. Perhaps the highlight of his career was

It is with deep sadness that we bid farewell to our father.

Roy (dad) was predeceased by his loving wife, Pauline Lundquist, 2 sisters and 1 brother.

He is survived by his 3 children: Daniel (Daliah), Lucie (Richard), Robert (Audrey) and 7 beautiful grandchildren: Darren, Ryan, Colin, Amy, Brady, Abby & Chloe. He is also survived and remembered by his many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and friends.

Dad was best known in the valley as the owner of Comox Ornamental Iron for many years, which stood below the Anchorage Garage in Comox.

Many will also remember how much he looked like Santa Claus in his later years and how he enjoyed dressing up for the kids at family gatherings and even the Driftwood Mall on occasion.

As a military veteran, he served our country proudly in far off lands that took him away from his family for extended periods.

The Celebration of Life will be announced in the New Year.

He will be missed and fondly remembered by his son Steven, daughter Lenore, daughter-in law Sandra, grandchildren Alena, Matthew, Darren and Timothy and their spouses (Sean, Val, Jordan and Shannon) and great-grandchildren, Ashley, Ciara, Dash, Quinn, Maxwell, Tristan, Ellis, Evelyn and Dante.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Piercy’s – Mt Washington Funeral Home, December 1st at 2 pm.

In loving memory of Doug Jamieson April 5, 1939 – November 20, 2023 Doug Jamieson passed away on Monday November 20, 2023, at North Island Comox Valley Hospital at the age of 84. Born in Midland, Ontario on 5 April 1939. Predeceased by his parents Orville Jamieson, and Cordis Jean (Marcellus); Sister Helen (Arensburg); brothers Harold, William, Lorne, Earl, George, Walter. He leaves behind his wife Patricia (Clairmont) Jamieson of 41 years. Survived also by his sons Mark (Susan Carter); Todd (Darlene Boudreau) Daughters Beverley (Greg Gillcash); Jami Gillingham-Bruneau (Mike) And Stepdaughter Caroline Chretien (Yan). He also leaves behind nieces and nephews. And from a previous marriage 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. As well from current marriage he leaves behind 2 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He proudly served in the Canadian Armed Forces (Navy) from 1956 to 1989. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for which he was proud of the Legion’s commitment to the community and veterans. Also, a member of the Royal Canadian Naval Association for many years. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and Health care Aids that provided Compassionate and professional care while Doug was hospitalized. In loving memory of Kayes, Carole Corrine (nee Cosman) Kayes, Carole Corrine (nee Cosman). Peacefully passed away at the Comox Valley Hospital, after a short illness, on Friday November 17th, 2023, in her 84th year.

Born Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. She is predeceased by her parents William and Mabel Cosman and her siblings Ronald, Jeanette Pulley, Gordon (at birth), Leslie, and Kenneth. Survived by her sister Victorine Clairmont as well as her many nieces and nephews.

Carole was a member of the Comox Legion, 888 Wing and the Elks. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and Jack who was in her care for many years.

We would like to thank the staff at the Comox Valley Hospital for the excellent care they gave to Carole.

As per Carole’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private celebration of her life will be held.

If you wish, donations in Carole’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.

In loving memory of Karen Mary Nagel January 29, 1948 ~ November 16, 2023 It is with so much sadness that we announce the passing away of Karen at the age of 75 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer over the past year. Karen also battled for more than 2 years with a bad hip due for replacement and persistent back pain. She passed away on November 16, 2023 peacefully in her sleep at the Comox Valley Hospital. While in hospital Karen was under the constant and attentive support of family and friends.

She will be lovingly missed by her beloved husband of 48 years Raymond, her beloved son, Ryan (Monica) Nagel, grandchildren Murphy Nagel, Mete & Arda Gurbuz.

She will also be missed by her sister Connie Inness, niece Lesley (Steve & Evan) Plant, niece Kerry (Lukas) Inness, niece Trudy (Mitch & Family) McDonald, sister-in-law Brenda (Richard) Ressler, niece-in-law Tammy (Rob & Family) Belau.

Karen was predeceased by her parents Helen & James Callaghan, brother Bill Callaghan, sister Sylvia Mazur, brother-in-law Stanley Mazur, nephew Jerry Mazur, and brother-inlaw Greg Inness.

Karen graduated as an LPN in 1971 beginning a career in healthcare that included both hospital and homecare. She was eager to help people.

Her career also included secretarial positions, and she enjoyed working at the Village Square Library in Calgary.

Karen was a very kind and loving person who put others before herself. She enjoyed travelling, reading, coffee, shopping, and above all else spending time with family and close friends.

Cardmaking was a passion and highlight in her life that brought out her creativity.

Karen also loved music; she sang in the Second Chance concert at the Martha Cohen Theater in Calgary. She was a very social person who connected with a lot of people through the years with her amazing smile, laugh, wit, and warming spirit.

At this time we would like to thank the staff at the Comox Valley Hospital. Our family is very grateful and would like to thank Dr.Matous for his hard work, kindness, and compassionate care of Karen every step of the way.

No formal service will be held immediately; a Celebration of Life will be held in the new year to honour and remember Karen.

In loving memory of Clinton Craig Burnell Clinton Craig Burnell, born December 27th, 1949, died peacefully November 22nd. He leaves behind his loving wife of 47 years, Elaine, as well as Elaine’s siblings and their families. He is survived by his brother Garth (Linda), Randy and Brad as well as his children, Scott, Cara, Maria and their partners, children, and grandchildren. He looked forward to meeting up with his parents and brother Ken. Clint loved his life here in Comox Valley and it gave him great satisfaction to volunteer with various groups in the area.

I wish to thank the hospital and all the medical staff for the wonderful care in Clint’s final days.

A Celebration of Life will be held December 11th, 2:00 pm at Comox United Church, 250 Beach Drive, Comox BC, reception to follow. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to Comox Valley Senior Support in Clint’s memory.

Mavis enjoyed her many years in the Comox Valley, playing bingo, cards with friends, and walking at the Airpark. In her earlier years Mavis worked at Eatons and banks while raising her three children. She is survived by her daughter Linda Welch, son Dennis (Kelly) Strachan, and daughter Sherri Knodel, as well as 3 grandchildren Darren, Larry and RJ, and 3 great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband Malcom, and brother Cal Livingston. Mavis was kind, strong and independent and will be missed.
