Locke has on occasion complained that Farnworth isn’t contacting her personally. She said she last received a letter from him in mid-September. “He’s finally admitting he doesn’t have a plan so fair enough, but somehow he wants us to create the plan and that’s difficult,” Locke said Oct. 10.

Surrey 11-year-old Jade Lof is the only Canadian among 28 student-journalists picked for this year’s Scholastic Kids Press program.

It’s big news for Jade, a Grade 6 student who lives in the Cloverdale area, and other budding journalists from around the world.

Each year these “Kid Reporters,” aged 10 to 14, interview newsmakers and cover the topics that interest them and their peers. The hope is they receive “invaluable real-world experience as they develop critical thinking, researching and reporting skills,” according to a news release on scholastic.com, a website where this year’s kids were named Sept. 27.

The student journalists represent 17 U.S. states and eight other countries including Canada, Australia, China, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and South Korea.

Jade applied for the program last spring, as her Grade 5 year was drawing to a close.

“There were a number of documents she had to include in there, including a questionnaire, personal essay, some story ideas, a story sample,” explained her mother, Janis, who says her daughter has been a storyteller ever since she could hold a pencil.

“I was very excited,” Jade reported.

“I really love writing because you can get lost in the world, just away from real life, and you can write your own world out,” she added.

A bio says Jade’s other hobbies include dance, sports and baking.

In the future Jade wants to be an author, and a short novel of hers, “Bliss,” will be published by Austin Macauley sometime next year.

“I love the sound of my pencil scratching as I transfer my thoughts to paper,” Jade notes. “Whether I’m writing fiction or news, I always try to write with enough details so the reader

can feel as though they are there, experiencing the moment.”

Reportedly, writing runs in the family blood. Jade says she has an older brother, Jacob, who is “very good at speaking and giving speeches and debate,” she says. “He’s a pretty good writer, too.”

As a Kid Reporter, Jade’s stories will be published on a Scholastic website and featured in select issues of Scholastic Magazines+, which reach more than 13 million students in U.S. classrooms. The young writers will pitch stories to editor Suzanne McCabe.

“Since I am the only Kid Reporter in Canada, I plan on reporting on important events in Canada that might spark an interest in other people of other countries,” Jade said. “But more locally, I would like to report on organizations that help people in need. There is one called Cloverdale Community Kitchen, which feeds people who are yet to have a home.”

During the 2022-2023 program year, Scholastic Kid Reporters covered the G7 summit in Japan, San Diego Comic-Con, National History Day and hotly-contested runoff elections in the U.S., among other topics.

Over the years they’ve interviewed some notable figures including Nobel Peace Prize recipient Malala Yousafzai, CNN news anchor Anderson Cooper, conservationist Jane Goodall and the Obamas (Barack and Michelle).

Huberman stated in a subsequent press release that the Surrey Board of Trade is “very concerned about how a new police force, or two police forces in the interim, will impact business taxation.”

Surrey’s snapshot captures a devastating picture, with an estimated 1,060 people in the city who do not have a home. This marks a 65 per cent increase from 2020’s count, in which 644 individuals were identified.

Neufeld said they have seen a huge increase in the number of unhoused individuals in Surrey, along with an increase in the refugee population.

“We never had refugees coming to shelters, and we have a huge influx of people who are coming to Canada for a better life and have nowhere to go,” Neufeld said.

Things like more supportive housing units are desperately needed, she added. The 200 shelter beds that Surrey Urban Mission has across the city are full every night.

T

his year’s homeless count in Metro Vancouver should serve to remind Canadians who donate exclusively to help people in need in other countries that there are plenty of people in need right here at home.

According to figures released Oct. 5, volunteers in March counted 1,060 people in Surrey who don’t have a home, making for a 65 per cent increase over the 2020 count of 644 people. (See story page 12).

Surrey’s increase is roughly twice that of the regional average of 32 per cent across Metro Vancouver, where all told 4,821 people were identified as homeless.

That’s not to say homelessness is specific to Surrey, though.

Vancouver recorded 2,420 people experiencing homelessness and in Delta, according to this latest count, homelessness is up a whopping 159 per cent over 2020 with volunteers counting 44 people as opposed to 17 in 2020.

Sadly, count organizers say

the reality is much bleaker than reported. Lorraine Copas, chairwoman of a community advisory board that co-ordinates federal “Reaching Home” funding in Greater Vancouver, advised that the actual number of people experiencing homelessness is “at the very minimum” three to four times higher than what’s been reported.

Undoubtedly some people were missed in the count, given the fact that participating in the survey is on a voluntary basis and individuals will fall through the cracks, figuratively speaking.

Given the rising price of groceries, rent and pretty much everything else here in Canada, and that the number of homeless people is certain to grow, it’s important that fortunate Canadians who generously help people across the seas also remember their neighbours not so far away, who are also in desperate need of support.

Boosting housing in B.C. cities will have its challenges Frankly Speaking Frank Bucholtz

Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon will be one of the busiest members of Premier David Eby’s cabinet over the next year.

The Delta North MLA is in charge of doing all he can to boost the number of housing units in the province.

The province decided that one of the biggest ways to boost housing starts is to prod municipalities.The first 10 municipal targets include

The idea of setting targets and reducing red tape and zoning restrictions has been floated by numerous politicians in both federal and provincial parliaments.

California has set up a similar program, pressuring municipalities to create many more housing units.

There are many obstacles along the way. One of the biggest is the high cost of land, which shows no signs of decreasing in any meaningful way. Another is the built-in delays at the municipal approval level – these bureaucratic systems will not change easily.

do not just affect people with mortgages. They also have a significant effect on developers and builders, who often pay well above prime rate to borrow money to shepherd a project from concept to completion.

There is no doubt that the housing shortage is the number one problem in B.C., and indeed in much of North America. High interest rates and high selling prices make things much worse.

The Greater Vancouver area, which from a housing perspective includes areas as far away as Pemberton and Hope, has very high prices, many restrictions on land use (notably the Agricultural Land

Delta is being asked to approve 3,607 housing units over the next five years (including this year). The province set targets based on the past rate of approvals, and are asking the 10 municipalities on its first list to boost starts by an average of 38 per cent, based on recent trends.

Delta Mayor George Harvie, who is the former chief administrator of the city, says that the target is achievable. Most other mayors of cities on the list (which includes Vancouver) say the same thing.

Members of the public are asking all levels of government to make housing a higher priority. High rents, homelessness and short-term vacation rentals are among some of their biggest concerns.

The current provincial government is trying to make some major changes, in the hope that they will lead to significantly more housing.

Expect to see and hear a lot from Kahlon in the coming months.

The Editor, Re: “I hate to say it but,” the Now-Leader, Oct. 5 .

I really appreciated Tom Zytaruk’s column on the word hate being thrown around like confetti. It was published in our local Black Press newspaper in Parksville.

I definitely agree that the word has been weaponized and is applied to anybody that has a differing opinion or belief (especially when it does not line up with mainstream media).

I am going to assume that you will ironically receive some “hate” mail for the column so I just wanted to write in and hope you would be encouraged that there are others who agree with your sentiments.

Our culture is sorely lacking the ability to discuss hot-button issues in a rational and respectful way. Social media is an echo chamber, for both sides, as the algorithms only feed material you interact with, and so when people go out into real life and discover there are differing opinions, they are not prepared to engage in those conversations.

Why would they put themselves through the discomfort (or inconvenience) of considering a differing view when one can just return to the safety of their screen, where ev-

eryone lives and breathes the same ideology?

It’s easier to just label the person as hateful.

I was happy to read that a teacher, Annie Ohana, was chosen as a finalist for the GlobalTeacherPrize.

I particularly appreciated reporter Sobia Moman’s decision to highlight that Ohana specializes in Palestinian rights campaigning and that she has developed a curriculum on Israel and Palestine that is being used in classrooms worldwide.

Although I would’ve liked to have more information on this curriculum, I think including this aspect of her work is important in contributing to a more balanced media environment in Canada regarding these types of issues. Too often, journalists steer away from even touching on these topics.

So Surrey was very late at even passing a climate emergency plan, and so we were very late in getting that climate change action strategy.

In terms of the specific policy of the climate change action strategy, I can tell you as someone who’s looked at a lot of these strategies across the Lower Mainland – the City of Surrey is pretty similar to the rest. There’s nothing radically different.

It’s a lot of the same stuff of making sure that buildings are more efficient, encouraging noncar transportation, changing the way we do city planning so that everything’s closer, so you don’t have to travel that much. All of these things are similar across the Lower Mainland, but it takes a staff – a lot of work – to implement them here in Surrey.

In terms of the big change I want to see is that I definitely want to see that strategy implemented fully.

My big worry though is about costs. Right now, with the SPS (Surrey Police Service) situation and the expanding costs there, it seems hard to see where we’re gonna have the money to make big changes on the environment, right?

So sort of what I want to see happen is just have that strategy implemented as strongly as possible.

said, we got that emergency declaration passed, but they never got to actually pushing through an actual plan, and what it seems like from the discussions at the Climate Change Committee, it sounds like it wasn’t a priority of the council.

It didn’t move forward.

But you can sort of see [the] night-and-day in terms of the reception that environmentalists and climate activists have had in the city at the last council [compared to] this one.

Q: If you had one message to say to the people of Surrey regarding environmental sustainability, what statement would that be and why?

A: For me, I come from this activist NGO world and I would say that if you care about the environment and climate in the city of Surrey, get involved.

We have a local group called Syria for a Future where we do climate activism with the city. [You can] apply to be on a committee or come to council or come to the committees and watch them keep up with what’s going on.

For me, it’s more about that political involvement than any specific one thing that somebody can do, right? You might be able to change your own life to make a small impact on the environment.

But I think that if you become politically active and sort of join Q: Why or why not do you believe forces with other people, you can make a much bigger impact than that Surrey’s general outlook tojust anything you can do on your wards sustainability is effective?

However, organizers of the homeless count are urging the public to look at the numbers with a critical eye.

“The limitations of this methodology have to do with the time-frame the count is conducted, and the nature of the process being a voluntary survey,” reads a portion of the report.

“It is important to understand that this methodology will create a result that is an absolute minimum number of people who are experiencing homelessness on the specific day of the count, and this methodology means that those who are not currently accessing services or are easily found will most likely be excluded.”

The City of Surrey’s “Empower Surrey Parent Workshops” are back for another year.

The workshops provide parents and caregivers with a road map from experts to help keep their children out of gangs.

“New to this round of workshops is information surrounding online exploitation and grooming in response to the RCMP’s BC Integrated Child Exploitation Unit revealing that the number of online child exploitation reports has significantly increased since the start of 2023,” reads a news release from the City of Surrey.

The free, two-hour workshop will run at different locations throughout the city from October to November.

Surrey’s “Empower Surrey Parent Workshops” cover a wide variety of topics, from identifying and addressing risk factors to recognizing the signs of online sexual exploitation and grooming to understanding youth slang that might indicate the potential for risk. The city says it is important that parents and caregivers are informed and start conversations about gang prevention with their children at a

young age. These workshops will help ensure parents and caregivers are well-equipped to have these conversations.

The workshops cover a wide variety of topics, from identifying and addressing risk factors to recognizing the signs of

online sexual exploitation and grooming, to understanding youth slang that might indicate the potential for risk, and some of the difficulties that Surrey youth face.

The workshops will also provide tools on how to build “protective factors” for children and youth and where to get help if a youth is at risk or involved in negative behaviours.

“So for this year we’ve made sure to rotate the locations and neighbourhoods these workshops are offered in to provide opportunities for new families to attend,” stated Jaclyn Blaney, acting assistant manager with Safe Schools.

“What’s new for this year is that some of them will also be held at community centres or libraries, which are good community gathering

spaces.”

Three men have been charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the November 2022 shooting of Surrey man Pawandeep Chopra, 24.

Chopra was taken to Surrey Memorial Hospital on Nov. 3 and died two days later.

A motorcyclist is dead after a crash in Newton last Thursday evening (Oct 5).

The male motorcyclist was travelling south on Hall Road around 6:30 p.m. when it collided with a Hyundai Sonata travelling north.

The female driver of the

“Alcohol and drugs are not considered to be contributing factors in this collision,” Staff Sgt. Brad Essex stated in an RCMP release late last Thursday.

Delta-raised rocker recalls getting shot, then using Dave Grohl’s famous throne MusicNotes Tom Zillich

F

or the rest of his life, North Delta-raised musician Darin Wall has a crazy story to tell about the night he was shot at a gig and then got to use Dave Grohl’s legendary “throne of rock” on stage while nursing his leg injury.

These days Wall lives in Seattle and plays bass in Greyhawk. On a September night in 2021, the metal band was in Boise, Idaho, where Wall took a stray bullet in his upper thigh after tackling a would-be shooter. Later, he was hailed as a hero for stopping what might have been a mass murder at the nightclub.

News headlines and Twitter posts caught the attention of Foo Fighters’ band management and singer/guitarist Grohl, who famously used a custom chair on a 2015 tour after breaking a leg during a show in Sweden.

With Greyhawk gigs on the calendar just weeks after Wall was shot, the hobbled bass player was loaned Grohl’s throne for a few shows including a triumphant one at Seattle’s El Corazon club, where King 5 news cameras showed up.

“It was a hot-button topic for a minute there,” Wall told me on the phone. “It’s still a big thing with people here wanting to ask me about it, and that’s fine. It’s a wacky story. It’s definitely become part of the lore of the band and part of my story, for sure. But I don’t know that it really helped our career that much as a band.”

Two years later the bullet is still lodged in Wall’s thigh, but he’s relatively OK other than some phantom pains.

“Doctors told me that I got really lucky,” Wall said. “I mean, no one who gets shot is lucky, but if you’re gonna get shot in the area where I got shot, it was lucky that I moved to my right pretty quickly when he pulled the trigger, and it didn’t hit anything vital. But it just missed everything – like, it’s less than half an inch for my femoral artery, and if he hit that I would have bled out in about 15 seconds.”

The shooter is now doing time for his crime, Wall said, and Greyhawk plays on.

Hands-on Family Art Party Saturday afternoon at SAG Another free-admission “Family Art Party” is planned at Surrey Art Gallery, this time Saturday (Oct. 14) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

It’s a chance for kids and parents to sculpt palaces, print patterns and play with percussion with the theme of “Mapping Stories, Home and Away.”

Everyone is welcome at the free drop-in event, where children must be with an adult.

The party is inspired by SAG’s three fall exhibits, which are “Swapnaa Tamhane: No Surface is Neutral,” “all roses sleep (inviolate light)” and “Kampala to Canada.”

Hands-on artmaking activities include collaborative block printing, mixed-media sculpting and games that lead young viewers through the gallery, at Bear Creek Park.

Kids can connect with the threads of textile history by contributing to a collaborative block print on fabric, inspired by Swapnaa Tamhane’s colourful work.

Also, through drawing, connect floral patterns that echo a bee’s journey across the Alberta prairies in search of wild roses to pollinate.

The event will also feature Mohamed Assani Trio’s performance of classical music of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Meantime, today (Oct. 12), the curator of “Swapnaa Tamhane: No Surface is Neutral,” Dr. Deepali Dewan, will lead

a two-hour tour and talk about the exhibit starting at 6:30 p.m.

Admission is free.

On view at SAG until Nov. 26, Tamhane’s work explores the impact of cotton on India’s history and decolonial themes through textile art.

Also at the gallery this fall, Taslim Samji’s “Kampala to Canada” commemorates the travels and experiences of several Ugandan Asian Canadians at a time when thousands of such refugees arrived in Canada penniless and uncertain of their future.

Highlighted are the stories of 12 Ugandan South Asian Canadians whose journeys crossed continents, starting in India, before arriving in Canada.

Samji’s exhibit debuted last October at the Roundhouse arts centre in Vancouver, and she’s since written a 108-page book about the subject, “Kampala to Canada: Untold Immigration Stories of Ugandan Asians.”

Another SAG-connected event is an online one 7 p.m.

Thursday, Oct. 19, when people can learn about the importance of local bee species with exhibiting artists Alana Bartol and Bryce Krynski, along with Lori Weidenhammer of Native Bee Society of British Columbia.

Films by and about women are featured in Surrey at this weekend’s Shakti Film Festival, a twonight event Friday and Saturday (Oct. 13-14) at Central City’s SFU theatre, from 6 to 10 p.m.

The annual festival is held in honour of the International Day of the Girl Child with a goal to feature two nights of “thought-provoking films that will inspire and change your worldview to create a better world, for girls and women.”

‘The Shawshank Redemption’ stars Surrey actors in prison tale

Many people list the film as their all-time favourite, and now “The Shawshank Redemption” is on a stage in Langley this month.

Two Surrey-based actors, Dann Wilhelm and Murray Schindel, are featured in Theatre in the Country’s production of the prison tale, based on Stephen King’s novella.

The powerful script is staged from Oct. 11 to 28 at the dinner-theatre venue, 5708 Glover Rd. The 14-man cast features Wilhelm as main protagonist Andy Dufresne, convicted of murder and sentenced to life in the notorious Shawshank prison. In the 1994 movie Andy is played by Tim Robbins, opposite Morgan Freeman as Ellis “Red” Redding, a character played by Kuup Peters in Langley.

Director Reg Parks says audiences will be transported to the gritty world of Shawshank State Penitentiary for a memorable story that explores the resilience of the human spirit and enduring quest for freedom.

“Everyone who loves the movie will love this performance,” Parks promises.

“The thing people remember about the film is the hope personified at the end, but the journey to earn that hope is hard and sometimes devastating to watch. It’s a powerful experience and the rawest theatre production we have ever mounted at Theatre In The Country.”

Thankfully, after a long pandemic pause, Vancouver’s long-established Arts Club Theatre Company is back touring plays to theatres across Metro Vancouver, Vancouver Island and the Okanagan.

This week and next (Oct. 11-21), Surrey Arts Centre’s Main Stage is a tour stop for Mark Crawford’s sex farce “The Birds and the Bees,” which had audiences buzzing when it played the Arts Club’s Granville Island stage in 2019.

The show was supposed to tour the following year but, well, you can guess why those plans were cancelled.

Now, Lauren Taylor is back directing the farmhouse-set comedy, about beekeeper Gail (played by Nancy Kerr), her turkey-farmer daughter Sarah (Agnes Tong), flirty neighbour Earl (Gerry Mackay) and a nerdy grad student named Ben (Riley Hardwick).

The cast is entirely new for the 2023 production, set in adjoining bedrooms of Gail’s home. When daughter Sarah moves in after splitting with her husband, the pair of men add to the hilarity, including awkward conversations about the artificial insemination of turkeys and a “gobble, gobble” mating ritual borrowed by humans at an annual dance.

“Audiences are in for a real treat because this is just such a big, lovely, joyful comedy and exactly the kind of thing that we all could do with right now, a bit of a laugh,” Taylor raved, and rightly so.

There are some guaranteed giggles in the play, which is more of a romp-com than rom-com with some naughty moments meant for adult eyes only.

The four characters are caught up in this hapless situation just trying to figure it out.”

It’s not all laughs, though. A thread of environmental alarm runs through Crawford’s script, which also involves a medical emergency.

With an annual Turkey Days dance planned, Gail is distracted by the reality of her bees dying and why pesticides used by corn farmer Earl might be to blame.

Ultimately, the funny moments greatly outnumber the dramatic ones.

“People end up getting caught in their underwear, and it’s huge fun,” the Australian-born director confirmed with a laugh. “There’s no nudity other than one moment where we see a very quick splash of a bare backside, a quick reveal before blackout. But there’s lots of covering up and slamming of doors.”

Ashlie Corcoran, the White Rockraised artistic director of Arts Club Theatre Company, calls “The Birds and The Bees” a big-hearted, silly, modern and progressive sex farce, where the older characters get to have as much fun, or more, than their younger counterparts.

“But, this piece is also much more than frolicking fun,” she stated. “It also plays with generational differences and the way those differences are revealed in issues of environmentalism, economics, sexuality, and ‘good morals’.”

Later in its 2023-24 season, ACT will send two other shows on tour including Beau Dixon’s music-filled “Beneath Springhill: The Maurice Ruddick Story” (Jan. 9-20 at Surrey Arts Centre) and Farren Timoteo’s hilarious “Made In Italy,” a coming-of-age musical about family, food and the life of Italian immigrants in rural Jasper, Alberta (Feb. 27 to March 9).

The Arts Club’s flagship Stanley stage in Vancouver will present five shows during the company’s 60th-anniversary “diamond” season, starting with “Little Shop of Horrors” (which closed Sunday, Oct. 8) and the holiday show “Elf: The Musical” (opens Nov. 2).

‘Love Bomb’ sparks conversation about sex trafficking James Smith Black Press Media

A play that blends a rock concert with a tense mystery about sex trafficking in B.C. is coming to North Delta for two shows this weekend.

“Love Bomb,” an award-winning original drama from Vancouver-based Shameless Hussy Productions, tells the story of Lillian, a mother searching for her missing daughter, and up-and-coming singer/ songwriter Justine, whose music may hold the answers Lillian is looking for.

The play is set at a bar in Prince George, where Justine is booked to perform.

Lillian, convinced that a song of Justine’s she heard on YouTube contains her daughter’s words, tracks down the singer and forces her to perform the rest of her set, determined to learn the truth.

“Through the music,

through the lyrics, you learn what happened to her daughter,” director Reneé Iaci said.

The play delves into the sex trafficking industry in Canada, based partially on the case of Reza Moazami, who in 2014 became the first person in B.C. to be found guilty of human trafficking and was sentenced to 23

years in prison. His 11 victims ranged in age from 14 to 19 years old.

“We met with the Crown counsel, we met with the lead investigator, we read the 11 testimonies of the girls — we used a lot of facts from that case,” Iaci said. “Nothing is verbatim in terms of the victims, the story is fictitious, but it’s based on a lot of those facts.”

But the genesis of the play was an experience Iaci had 20-odd years ago, when a student she was directing in a production at Vancouver’s Templeton Secondary School was being “love bombed” — a tactic used by pimps and gang members to control their victims with gifts, attention and affection.

“I didn’t know this (at the time), but this guy who was posing as her boyfriend and was buying her all sorts of gifts and showering her with love and attention, he was grooming her for the sex

take theatre in school, but of course that’s not allowed.

Then she was gone, that was it.

“That haunted me because it happened right under my nose and I didn’t know. I didn’t recognize what was going on until afterwards.

A park in Newton is where Canada’s men’s national field hockey team is now preparing for the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, starting later this month.

Tamanawis is considered home turf for the team’s many Metro Vancouver-area players, especially Balraj Panesar, the lone Surrey-raised athlete on the 16-man roster, announced Sept. 26 by Field Hockey Canada.

Panesar, 27, is a veteran midfielder with 85 caps (games) to his credit with Team Canada, which would earn a trip to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games with a gold medal in Santiago.

This fall Panesar is in Birmingham, England, studying for a law degree and playing with the Beeston club team in nearby Nottingham.

“It’s quite a strong league here, one of the strongest in the world,” Panesar reported in a WhatsApp call. “Hockey is quite significant here, and it’s normal to see people walking around with hockey sticks and their hockey bags on the street here.”

Of course that’s field hockey, not the game on ice.

No stranger to travel, Panesar will soon fly home from the U.K. to train with the national team for a few days before jetting off to Chile to play at the Pan Am Games.

The men’s national team, aka Red Caribou, looks to upgrade their silver medal from Lima 2019 into gold, as they have come second to Argentina at the last three Pan American Games. The squad includes seven players from Lima 2019 and 10 who competed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Panesar was left off the team that played in Japan during the COVID-delayed Summer Olympics in 2021.

“Brandon (Pereira, fellow Surreyite) was listed as an alternate for Tokyo, a travelling reserve, and my brother (Sukhi) made the team,” Panesar recalled. “I was full-

on cut, which was tough, a tough week. I got hit in the face with a ball and then I got cut (from the team) a few days later, so that was a double-whammy, with a fractured jaw.”

His older sibling Sukhi, a veteran of the national team since 2010, won’t be travelling to Santiago.

“I think unofficially he’s moved on with his life and is busy trying to develop his career outside of hockey now,” Panesar said. “He’s been taking a break for about a year and a half now, since he’s last touched a stick.”

In 2014 the younger Panesar made his senior-team debut in New Zealand and now plays for a Canadian squad currently ranked second in the Pan

American region, 16th in the world.

In Santiago, field hockey games will be played for 10 days starting Oct. 25. The eight men’s teams are split into two pools, with Team Canada in with the U.S., Brazil and Trinidad & Tobago. The other pool includes host Chile, Argentina, Mexico and Peru.

“This is a big (tournament) for all teams involved, including the lower-ranked ones, and they’re meaningful games,” Panesar noted.

“If we don’t win gold we can still qualify for the Olympics later, in January, but obviously our goal is to win at the Pan American Games,” he added. “It’s not going to be easy, and I feel this is our best chance.

Certainly getting past the U.S. in the pool will be a big one and they’re definitely a very strong team. They beat us in the last Pan Am Cup so we’ll be looking for some payback. Then later we’d have to face Chile or Argentina from the other pool, I’d assume. We’re just taking it one game at a time.”

Back on June 30, Panesar was among event planners when Canada’s two national teams hosted a golf tournament and dinner at Tsawwassen Springs Golf Course, to raise funds for their possible trips to the Paris Olympics in 2024. The programs are “significantly underfunded,” Panesar wrote to potential donors in an email leading up to the fundraiser.

This week, he said the event was a success in more ways than one.

“It was fantastic, a great turnout and nice weather,” Panesar recalled. “I think we had around 120 golfers, maybe more, and a lot of people just came in the evening as well, for the dinner and banquet.

“In the end I think the profit was around $17,000 or 18,000, split 50/50 with the women, and it was our first year doing it,” he added. “Above all, it wasn’t even about the fundraising, it was about connecting with the community. We have so many athletes on the men’s and women’s teams who go to UBC and UVIC. We’re looking forward to doing it again because that’s something we want to do every year.”

Newton’s BB5 United and Cloverdale-based Surrey United represented B.C. in the men’s Challenge Trophy and women’s Jubilee Trophy tournaments, respectively, involving 20 teams from across Canada.

Starting Oct. 4 the Surrey teams had a mix of wins and losses in daily games to land them both in fifthplace consolation finals Monday, when BB5 beat Edmonton Scottish SC 3-2 and Surrey United topped Ontario’s Caledon United 1-0.

The two adult club tournaments are considered Canada Soccer’s premier amateur competitions.

BB5 United (then known as Central City Breakers) won the 2019 men’s national title, and Surrey United women are two-time winners.

Surrey United’s roster included six former tournament champions, five of whom were on the club’s 2011 title-winning squad. The team had the two oldest players in the Jubilee competition, Brenda Stratton and Kate Qually, both former champs, according to a pre-tournament post on canadasoccer.com.

“Qually is a two-time champion who is taking part in her 14th national championships, all with Surrey United SC,” the post notes.

“Stratton is a new addition to the Surrey United lineup and she holds the distinction of having gone 27 years in between National Championships – she last competed in the finals in 1996 with champions Vancouver UBC Alumni.”

The BB5 United team is named for fallen teammate Brandon Bassi, 19, who was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Newton in May 2019, just a couple weeks after the team won the provincial title and a berth at nationals. That year’s CCB team rallied to win the national title for “BB5,” and celebrated by holding up his #5 jersey during the trophy presentation in Newfoundland and Labrador.
