BRIDGING THE GAP: CONNECTING AGRICULTURE TO CONSUMERS

Want to have some fun? Next time you are in grocery store, stand quietly beside the egg section and watch as people make decisions on how they “feel” about eggs. Some will walk up, go lower left and buy the eggs priced as $.25 each. Others will start to scan upwards to the left where various packages, stories and marketing tools will drive the price up to as high as $.64 per egg making the delta on a dozen of eggs $4.70. That’s a big difference. And if you want to pay the $7.69 or $2.99 per dozen … well that’s your choice. Until it isn’t. In today’s modern society, consumers often find themselves disconnected from the process of food production. The food on their plates seems to magically appear without a clear understanding of how it was grown or raised. This disconnection can be attributed to several factors, including urbanization, complex supply chains, and convenience culture. Additionally, rules and regulations in the agricultural industry, while aiming to ensure safety and sustainability, can inadvertently create challenges for farmers, leading to negative consequences such as increased costs and reduced competitiveness.

One example that I am following, exemplifies the challenges farmers face due to regulations is Proposition 12 in California. This legislation establishes new minimum space requirements for breeding pigs, veal calves, and egg-laying hens sold in the state, with the goal of improving animal welfare. However, its implementation has created difficulties for hog and chicken farmers. Meeting the new space requirements has proven to be challenging for farmers in California, resulting in many of them choosing to outsource their production to other states or countries with more favorable regulations. Unfortunately, this outsourcing not only leads to a loss of local farming operations but also increases the carbon footprint associated with transporting food long distances.

The negative implications of rules and regulations on farmers’ ability to grow food or raise livestock extend beyond Proposition 12. Excessive regulations often require additional resources, such as upgraded infrastructure, enhanced sanitation measures, and specialized equipment. Compliance with these regulations can significantly increase operational costs, particularly for small-scale operations.

The burden of these costs is often passed on to consumers through higher prices, making locally produced food less accessible and less competitive compared to products from regions with more lenient standards.

“Here’s how to raise chickens, California Farmers”, says Hollywood.

“But I cannot raise chickens that way and stay in business”, says California Farmers.

“We don’t care”, says Hollywood.

“I quit” says California Farmers.

“No problem, we’ll get eggs and chickens from growers outside California”, says Hollywood.

“We cannot send you our eggs and chickens because your standards don’t make sense to us.” Say other State farmers.

“No problem, we don’t believe people should have access to eggs or chicken anyway.” Says Hollywood, “Mission accomplished.”
