Liquor store stung

Teen beer buy nets big fine

A Langley liquor store has been ordered to pay a $7,000 fine after one of its clerks sold alcohol to a minor in a sting operation.

The Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch (LCRB) fined the Langley Liquor Store, at 20821 Fraser Hwy., in an April 12 ruling.

On Dec. 9, 2022, the liquor store, owned by Langley Holdings, was the target of a routine check by the Minors as Agents Program (MAP), which uses teenagers to make sure stores aren’t selling alcohol to underage kids.

Last November, the LCRB sent out notices to liquor stores across B.C. telling them that the MAP was taking place.

workers take to picket lines

Dozens of union members off the job as strike continues in Langley, and across Canada

Dozens of Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) workers were on the picket line starting Wednesday, April 19, as one of the largest federal strikes in Canadian history continued.

The striking federal workers in Langley were lined up on the sidewalks on 88th Avenue at 204th in Walnut Grove, as well as south on 204th and in front of the Service Canada Office located there.

“We love our jobs,” said Langley’s strike captain, Susie Blyth. “We love to help people in need of the services we provide.”

Blyth works for Services Canada, but many of those on the Langley picket line work in other government departments, including as civilian RCMP staffers and Corrections Canada. They work processing income taxes, EI, passports, and in the immigration process.

For the local pickets, all the workers who live in the nearby area were coming to Langley’s Service Canada office to picket. Other pickets were set up in Surrey, New Westminster, and Abbotsford, Blyth said.

She said there had been a big turnout on Friday despite the torrential rain in the morning.

“We are getting out there and getting our message out to the public,” said Blyth.

Some drivers were giving supportive honks to the PSAC members who were waving flags and picket signs.

Some of the signs had

hand-written slogans such as “2% is for milk,” a reference to the union’s fight for higher wages from the federal government.

“Our goal is to have this strike resolved,” she said.

In the meantime, Blyth said morale was good, despite the weather.

About 155,000 unionized

federal workers are unionized through PSAC, but approximately 46,000 are essential workers and remain at their jobs.

Wages are major bone of contention, with PSAC asking for a 13.5 per cent raise over the next three years, citing inflation and increases in the cost of living, while the

federal government is offering nine per cent over three years.

The striking workers are also asking to continue to be allowed to work remotely in many cases.

As of press deadlines on Tuesday afternoon, the PSAC members remained on the picket lines.

Job titles spark Township council argument

Langley Township council saw a heated exchange last week over positions that allegedly report directly to Mayor Eric Woodward, an idea he called “a conspiracy theory.”

Councillor Kim Richter, one of three councillors who are not members of Woodward’s Contract with Langley (CWL) majority on the nine-member council, presented a notice of motion on April 17 that questioned the creation of “four new administrative positions,” which Richter said “report primarily to the mayor.”

Richter named four positions, at least two of which are senior director-level jobs, in human resources, bylaws, community initiatives and legal advice, and media relations.

Richter’s motion questioned why there had not been a council resolution “to create an expanded mayor’s office administration staff” and asked for all reports generated by any of the “new positions” to be shared with all of council immediately.

Woodward rejected the idea that the positions were under his direct authority or that most of them were new positions at all.

He said that on taking office last year, there was a lot of work to be done – the CWL won a majority with a large and detailed list of new programs and reforms –and that staff are needed to work for a growing municipality with about 150,000 people.

“To me, this amounts to a conspiracy theory, and I can’t really believe it was put on the agenda,” Woodward said.

“Perhaps I could get some clarification on this, because I really don’t appreciate being called a liar in a public meeting,” Richter replied.

Township administrator Mark Bakken, who heads up

the Township’s staff, said that the “new” positions include posts that have been filled after retirements of longtime senior staff, such as manager of engineering and community development Ramin Seifi. Bakken said that jobs and titles have been changed as part of a re-organization, with duties tweaked.

Although some of the positions have different responsibilities, and two of the positions make $185,000 or $200,000, the actual cost of staffing is down by $1.5 million, Woodward noted.

That’s partly because people are leaving after years of service and being replaced by newer hires who are paid less, Bakken said.

Richter asked about whether or not all Township employees report to Bakken, or if some of them are reporting directly to the mayor.

Bakken gave a qualified response. Technically, all employees report to him as the head of the Township’s administration, he said.

But it’s possible for employees to work more directly

with the mayor on some projects, Bakken noted. That approach exists in other communities, he noted, and it did exist in the Township in the 1990s.

After some tense back and forth exchanges between Richter and Woodward, Coun. Steve Ferguson called for decorum.

“We do have a code of conduct and respect that we need to refer to,” he said, noting that the L-word – liar – was off-limits for the Township council.

“I don’t call staff names, and I don’t call my colleagues names,” said Ferguson. “It’s not appropriate.”

Richter wrapped up by re-iterating that all councillors needed equal access to information from staff, and that she didn’t feel like she had equal access.

“My concern is that this corporation is run by a body of nine [the council], it’s not run by one person,” said Richter.

Woodward said he thought her motion was insulting and incorrect, and was asking for reports that simply don’t exist.

“This has been brought to the council table for pure theatre, in my opinion,” he said. Richter’s motion was defeated 7-2, with her and Coun. Margaret Kunst the only votes in favour.

Repairs will take weeks, says manager

Vandals have trashed washrooms in three Langley City parks, forcing their shutdown “until further notice,” a notification from the City said Monday, April 24.

Penzer Park, Rotary Centennial Park, and Portage Park washrooms were damaged.

A picture posted online by the City showed metal stalls were knocked down inside the Penzer Park washrooms.

Kyle Simpson, Langley City manager of engineering, parks and operations said the damage was inflicted in mid-March and early April.

Vandals managed to get past new tamper-resistant doors at the Penzer and Rotary park washrooms on April 17. That followed an incident at Portage on March 13, where someone set fire to a soap dispenser, causing “significant smoke and soot damage,” Simpson told the Langley Advance Times.

He estimated cost of repairs to all three washrooms will likely be in the “tens of thousands” of dollars.

“We’re hoping to have them open in a few weeks.”

Simpson said the City spends about $100,000 a year on vandalism-related repairs.

There were two other recent incidents of vandalism in the Langley area, one between Good

Friday, April 7, and Saturday, April 8, when someone cut locks off two gates to gain access to the westernmost baseball diamonds at Langley’s Noel Booth Park, and used a vehicle to tear up the field, leaving deep ruts and rendering the facilities unusable for weeks.

A few days earlier, sometime between Saturday night, March 25 and Sunday morning, March 26 graffiti declaring “Hitler rules” and anti-Jewish comments – some of them obscene – were spray-painted on the exterior on the Langley Baseball clubhouse and concession.

It took the mural’s creator, artist Judy Pohl, about three hours to repair the damage.

In 2020, following repeated incidents where doors to the Penzer Park washrooms were kicked in and the interior vandalized, staff won approval from council to spend $15,000 on force-resistant metal-reinforced doors.

In a report to City council at the time, Rick Bomhof, the director of engineering, parks, and environment, said the parks department was also planning on installing vandal-resistant doors at Rotary Centennial Park, adding surveillance cameras were considered a last resort, something that would be installed only after exhausting less privacy-invasive alternatives like the doors.

Simpson said the City is looking at different deterrent options in the wake of the latest incidents, and has not ruled out video cameras.

He added any resident who sees suspicious activity is asked to report it to the RCMP non-emergency line at 604-532-3200.

Where is the new office?

One of the big sticking points preventing a deal between the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) workers and the federal government is how much work has to be done within the confines of a traditional office.

The COVID-19 pandemic upended our work norms.

Some jobs, you obviously can’t do from home. It’s hard to pound nails or pour concrete from the comfort of your couch, and countless jobs, from manufacturing to firefighting to just about everything in health care, require in-person work.

But there is a large and growing cohort of jobs that involves the manipulation of data – words, numbers, code, video – and is done entirely on a computer.

We have long had the ability to work from home, but the old norms weren’t broken up until the pandemic made it necessary.

Now there’s a concerted effort by many employers to get their workers back in the office.

There are some solid reasons for this, including the ease of face-to-face meetings – who among us actually enjoys Zoom? – and there are some reasons that are more subjective, such as the idea of having a “workplace culture.”

And on the other side of the ledger, there’s the advantages that accrue, mostly to the employees. Commuting less frequently saves time and money, and the ability to spend more time with family is a big plus.

And employees who came to enjoy those benefits of the work-from-home lifestyle aren’t going to give them up without a fight. For those who are unionized, like PSAC, that means this issue will keep coming up, contract after contract. And for those who aren’t in a union, it means some will vote with their feet. In a tight labour market, the employers who allow partial work-from-home schedules will have an advantage in hiring.

Libraries still unloved

This week I was going through the annual financial statement of the Fraser Valley Regional Library (we all have our hobbies) and one line item really jumped out at me.

The FVRL, which serves more than a dozen municipalities, from large suburban communities like Langley, Maple Ridge, and Abbotsford, to small Fraser Valley hamlets like Boston Bar, runs a tight ship, fiscally speaking. They had a decent surplus this year. They’re putting money into their reserves.

One thing they’re not doing is raking in donations.

In 2022, the FVRL received exactly $41,279.

If you worked from home during the pandemic, did you prefer that to going into the office every day?

Answer online at www.langleyadvancetimes.com

Its total revenues – contributions from member municipalities, provincial government transfers, fees – were $30.5 million. Donations were 0.13 per cent of total revenues. Not much.

Worse, the report notes it’s been trending downwards in recent years.

Let’s compare that to the second-largest library system in the province – the Van-

couver Public Library.

The VPL – which gets far more civic funding per capita than the FVRL, despite serving fewer people – saw its foundation raise $3 million in the fiscal year ending in June 2022.

It received multiple donations of over $100,000, including corporate donations from the Dilawri Group, BMO, Sun Life, and Prospera Credit Union.

How is it that the largest library system in the province has no foundation, no major corporate donors, no high-profile millionaires eager to donate?

I have a couple of theories.

One, and I suspect this is the biggest problem, is the fact that when people think of the Lower Mainland, they think of Vancouver. Want to benefit a library? Give money to VPL’s foundation!

Forget the FVRL, or the Surrey Public Library, or the libraries of Richmond, Burnaby, or Coquitlam. Collectively, those libraries serve more than three times as

MEET OUR TEAM

Circulation: Brian Yip

many people as the VPL does, but they don’t have “Vancouver” in their name.

Second, the FVRL in particular lacks a unified voice.

There are 14 separate municipal governments involved in the FVRL. The libraries in our communities – the physical buildings – belong to or are leased by those local governments. But because the system isn’t owned by any one community, municipal governments don’t consider it a showpiece. It’s just some regional service, like sewer and water.

Our local leaders need to have a change of heart on this.

They need to understand that our library system does great things, on a pretty stingy budget. Its librarians work hard to offer traditional library services like book and DVD lending, children’s storytimes, and student help, along with innovative projects like lending out robots, musical instruments, even radon detectors.

That understanding, in turn, needs to turn into real financial support. You can measure a community’s real wealth in its libraries, and right now, we don’t measure up.

Racism unreal

Dear Editor, [Re: Racist graffiti defaces mural, Langley Advance Times, March 30]

I am writing with regard to the headline from the March 30 issue of your newspaper.

The sciences of biology and anthropology have ascertained that humanity is one race, one species, one family.

The 16th century invention of the concept of human races is groundless indeed.

As humans we are actually confronted by misinformation, prejudice, bigotry, and xenophobia.

The words racism, racist, etc., are meaningless fiction.

Our children and grandchildren deserve the truth.

Trash pickup is for the birds

Dear Editor, Another garbage pickup day, another windy day, and once again the recycling has been blown around our town in record amounts.

Even without the wind, the crows manage to do a good job of strewing the contents around.

I do not understand why we cannot have recycling containers with lids on them.

I realize that there is an onus on the homeowners to ensure the recycling is not overflowing and that contents are clean, but even if those rules are followed, the wind and the crows still manage to empty the containers.

I have written to the Township and posed this question, but they did not have the decency to respond.

We all have a responsibility to the environment. This issue needs

to be addressed immediately. Surrey and Abbotsford do not seem to have this problem, per-

a selection of feedback from our Online Readers

Washrooms in three City parks trashed by vandals.

Gloria Hall-Proehl: Nothing better to do. What a shame and such a lack of respect. They need to crack down on these losers. So angry to see this and I sure hope when they know who did this that they do not only get a slap on the hands and they make them pay for it. Way out of control.

Rick Nibbler: Wonder if it’s the same people that smashed out like four bus stops up here in Brookswood?

Letter writer irked by waste pickup in Aldergrove (see letter to the left).

haps the Township should adopt their methods.

Darren Pennington: I agree. The rollable recycling bins with lids like they have in Abbotsford, Surrey, Coquitlam, etc., are very nice.

Banned books are often the best ones to explore

I devoured a most captivating story over a recent rainy weekend.

I ordered it from the public library system and when I got the email that it was set aside for me, I ran through the raindrops to snatch it up. I’d heard about this title all of my life. Now, at 46, I could finally carve out the time required to connect with it and work through the eventual feelings that society has promised — even threatened — it would elicit within me.

A weekend with a frequently banned book? Be still, my heart.

These are the books of the highest order, almost as a rule. Reading them has been a particular thrill of mine dating back to my literary crush on Judy Blume in the 1980s, and speaks sweetly to my oh-so-contrary heart.

“What don’t they want me to know? That’s what I want to know!”

That night I curled up and entered

the world within The Bluest Eye, Toni Morrison’s first published novel.

I encountered the difficulty of the book on the very first sentence. I simply didn’t understand the context. It was a vernacular very distant from my own. It was a Black voice written by a Black author in the 1960s, in a time and space, politically and socially, that I’ve never walked in.

I didn’t know what she meant, and I knew I was missing a nuance. Blessedly, Morrison explains that first sentence at length in an epilogue, but it was the first stumbling block on a marathon filled with despair for the children in the book, but mostly anger and contempt for the adults who befuddled, ignored and dam-

aged them.

This book is not even close to my lived experience. And that’s exactly why it’s important for me to read it.

The Bluest Eye recently had wouldbe censors running to the RCMP in Chilliwack for removal from high schools there. That’s what drew me to it, along with dozens of my friends.

PETERS COLUMN GUEST

I found it has moments that perfectly capture the faults of humans in a certain time in America, specifically. But it also exposes the most repugnant corners of the psyche that can exist anywhere. Child molesters, perverts and psychopaths run amok through 1940s Ohio, and the writer goes inside their minds as they carry out their dirty deeds,

exposing their terrible souls to the reader in first person.

It’s like nothing I’ve ever read, and yet, something is familiar.

I have seen some of these passages. The most likely explanation is that this is not my first time reading The Bluest Eye

There are bits and pieces, phrases, literary devices, that are so specific to this story there is no way my déja vu could otherwise be explained.

And that would mean that as a child or a teenager I picked it up, tried to read it, and put it down again. It would mean that the first time I encountered the book I couldn’t finish it. It either perplexed or bored or scared me. Maybe I ran out of time, or lost it.

It’s hard to say.

But one thing is for sure. It was available for me to read as a child, as a teenager and a young person. And

it’s comforting to know it was also there for those who would know what to do with the author’s words.

I grew up in a home filled with books and was encouraged to read, write and explore ideas in all art forms. I was exposed to so much as a child, through the written word and the arts. So I was only 45 pages in when I put it down for the first break and said out loud, to nobody: “I can see why people foam at the mouth over this one.”

The book is bound in chaos on its pages, and for five decades, has been defined as both a triumph and a piece of filth.

Love it, hate it, despise it, speak badly about it, praise it.

But leave it be. Let it live on, let Pecola Breedlove and the horrible cast of characters around her remain on the library shelves for the right eyes to see.

Firefighter rescue dog, 2 men from RV

One hospitalized after motorhome flips on side

Glen Valley resident Melissa Carson and her family had just returned home from swimming at the Walnut Grove pool when a motorhome – with two men and a dog inside – flipped over and crashed into her driveway, trapping the occupants.

It happened around 7 p.m. last Thursday, April 20.

“We heard a noise and then our dog started barking,” Carson described.

Langley firefighters first extracted the two men from the vehicle, then went to work to get the frightened dog out.

It’s a moment Carson photographed, her picture later shared on social media by the Township firefighters with a note of appreci-

ation.

“They were really good, especially with the dog,” Carson recalled.

She was impressed with the care the firefighters took in removing the obviously frightened pet, with one firefighter carrying the canine down the ladder in his arms while three other firefighters assisted by stabilizing the ladder.

One of the two men rescued from the motorhome was transported to hospital, but was up and walking when he got in the ambulance, Carson said.

Once the dog was out of the motorhome and on the ground, it was obviously uninjured, and delighted to be free.

“He was excited.”

Carson was told the pet was only 18 months old.

Their neighbourhood is all too familiar with crashes, Carson told the Langley Advance Times.

“We see a lot of accidents,” she remarked.

“With them, it was just bad luck.”

Teenager able to buy beer

…continued from page 1

Minor agents are teens between 16 and 18 years old who simply go into liquor stores, monitored by LCRB inspectors who are on site at the same time, and try to buy alcohol.

If they’re asked for ID, they simply say they don’t have any on them, and leave.

Since liquor store clerks are supposed to ask for ID from anyone who appears under the age of 30, that should make them easy to catch.

Langley Liquor Store was fined $7,000 after a minor bought alcohol there in an LCRB sting.

In this case, however, the minor bought and paid for a six pack of beer without being challenged. It was the fifth of 10 random MAP inspections in the area that day.

During the March hearing, the store’s manager testified that they regularly

get minors coming into the store trying to buy alcohol, but that all employees have had a Serving It Right course, and know to ask for ID before service.

He also testified that they have even used mystery shoppers who appeared to be under 30 and checked to make sure staff were asking

for ID.

The clerk who sold the six pack to the teenager had been working at Langley Liquor Store for just three weeks.

Because there had been no previous infractions for the Langley store, it faces a lower-end penalty, a $7,000 fine.

The fines can rise to $11,000, and the LCRB can also impose a shutdown of seven to 11 days for stores that have breached the rules.

Langley Township’s budget and 5.37 per cent property tax increase got final approval on April 17 with an 8-1 vote. With Surrey, Langley City, and Vancouver passing budgets that have double-digit tax increases, the Township’s was on the low side. However, it was higher than the four per cent or less goal the Township had set in January.

In a statement issued after the vote, Mayor Eric Woodward emphasized the services and new hires for public safety

“This council has found ways to fund new services and amenities people want and need, aside from using large property tax increases that other municipalities are putting in place,” he said. “We will continue our work to minimize the financial burden on people while providing more services, amenities, and other supports to meet the needs of this fast-growing community.”

The budget includes funding to increase the number of firefighters by 11

this year, to add five RCMP officers, and to hire three new bylaw officers. More firefighter and RCMP hires are planned over the next several years to cover increased call volumes.

In addition, there are more staff to speed up development application processing, where Woodward has said he wants to reduce wait times to months from years. Finance and tree protection are also seeing increased staffing. Councillor Kim Richter cast the lone vote against the budget.

Accused killers in court

Murder cases moving slowly in system

Two men charged in separate Langley murders last year do not have trial dates yet, but both are appearing in court in the coming months.

Justin Bos will be back in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster for a pre-trial appearance on May 26.

Bos faces a charge of second-degree murder in the death of Cody Mostat, who was found unconscious at the Highway Hotel in Walnut Grove just before 9 p.m. on

March 25, 2022. Mostat later died.

In an unrelated murder case, Jason Robert William Griffiths will be back in Surrey Provincial Court on June 2 for a preliminary inquiry.

Griffiths is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Nicholas Ball, 29. Ball was killed in a vacant lot in the 7400-block of 208th Street. His body was discovered on March 29, 2022.

Persons charged with a criminal offence are considered not guilty until the charges are proven in court.

Knifing still a mystery

Langley RCMP are trying to sort out the mystery of how a car crash connects to two men who turned up at the hospital with knife wounds on Saturday, April 15.

Mounties were first called out around 10:15 p.m. that night, when two men arrived at Langley Memorial Hospital with what appeared to be knife wounds. Neither man suffered life threatening injuries, said Langley RCMP Cpl. Craig Van Herk. However, while officers were on scene at the

hospital, reports began coming in of a two-vehicle crash at 233rd Street and 70A Avenue. A white sedan and black SUV were involved. It quickly became apparent that the crash and the stabbing incident were connected, although their injuries are not thought to be linked to the crash. The wounded men had been involved in the crash, but had somehow, with a third, unknown vehicle, made their way to the hospital.

“How they got there is still part of the investigation,” said Van Herk. Police are still investigating. No charges have been laid.

Trial set to start in death of Carson Crimeni

Manslaughter charge faces young man who was under 18 at time of incident

The manslaughter trial for a young man accused of causing the death of Langley’s Carson Crimeni is scheduled to take place this summer.

The trial is scheduled to begin June 19 in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster, and is currently scheduled to run for a full month.

The accused cannot be identified by name, as he was a minor when Carson died.

Carson was 14 when he died on Aug. 14, 2019, of an apparent drug overdose, in a park near the Walnut Grove Community Centre.

After his family learned of his sudden death, video of Carson emerged on social media, showing him at the Walnut Grove skate park earlier in the day, so intoxicated he

could barely speak. Other youths could be heard laughing on the videos.

Carson’s family believes the boy was given a large amount of drugs by someone at the skate park.

The death caused an outpouring of public grief and support.

Flowers and chalked messages of support were left at the skate park where Carson was last seen before his death. There was also a vigil.

The message “Pray for justice” was spraypainted on the concrete.

Due to the public interest, the informal memorial was allowed to remain in place for several weeks, until Labour Day of 2019.

Carson’s family was also present when a permanent memorial plaque and lightbox containing his hockey jersey were installed at the Langley Sportsplex.

A lengthy Langley RCMP inves-

tigation was launched, with dozens of witnesses interviewed about Carson’s last hours. Numerous tips were received from the public.

In September 2021, charges were laid against a single young man, who was then 20 years old.

It had been more than two years since Carson’s death, and his family members, including Carson’s father, Aron, and his grandfather, Darrel, had been worried that charges would never be laid.

Youths charged with manslaughter can be sentenced as adults –judges are legally required to give consideration to such a sentence.

In adult sentencing for manslaughter not involving a firearm, there is no minimum sentence, but the maximum sentence is life in prison with no possibility of parole for up to seven years. Sentencing is based on legal precedent.

The event was held at the Gapyeong Stone memorial in Derek Doubleday Arboretum. Gapyeong County had the stone sent to Langley in 2019 to commemorate the battle and Canada’s connection to South Korea.

“This monument will teach us and our next generations about the Korean War,” said Tae Young Kim, 93, the president of the Korean War Veterans Association.

A number of Canadian Forces veterans, as well as several Korean-Canadian veterans of the Korean War, were present at the ceremony.

Shaun Francis of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry described the battle, and the role the PPCLI played in 1951.

A mixed UN force of Canadians, Australians, and New Zealanders, backed up by an American unit of Sherman tanks, put up a hasty defence to the spring offensive launched by the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army (PVA), which was backing North Korea.

The Australians took the brunt of the first attack, after which the Princess Pats were encircled on a hill.

“The Patricias were told to make a last stand,” said Francis.

They fought off a nighttime attack and the PVA was unable to dislodge them, suffering heavy casualties.

The PVA withdrew the next day.

The battle was one of several engagements that blunted the spring offensive and prevented Seoul, the capital of modern South Korea,

from being captured. Federal, provincial, and local politicians all took part in Friday’s event, as did local high school students.

Members of the 20th century world history class from Langley Secondary pinned poppies to the jackets of Canadian and Korean veterans present at the event.

Doug Hadley, past president of the Aldergrove legion, read the honour roll, listing the Canadians who lost their lives in the Battle of Kapyong.

The event also marked the official unveiling of the Korean War Memorial Garden, including a small ornamental pond, which was added to the stone starting last year.

The event was organized and MCed by Michael Chang, a Langley businessman who was instrumental in establishing the memorial as well as the new ornamental garden.

Swing dance raising coin for jazz fest

Annual arts and music festival is revisits big band era May 12 with the Dal Richards Orchestra

Step back in time and experience an evening of big band music, swing dancing, and a silent auction at the Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival fundraiser set for Friday, May 12.

The event will feature the Dal Richards Orchestra playing music from the big band era. Richards and his band had a long history of performing at popular venues in Vancouver since the 1980s, such as the PNE bandstand and annual New Year’s Eve celebration at the Bayshore Hotel.

Dave Quinn, co-founder and artistic director of jazz fest, said Richards was a mainstay of the big band orchestra era.

“His legacy continues today with the Dal Richards Orchestra playing the popular music of the big band era. This is such a great opportunity for people to dance to big band music at a spectacular venue.”

Karen Zukas, co-founder and execu-

tive director of the jazz fest, said it’s an opportunity to bring live music to Fort Langley and provide a local experience.

“It’s wonderful for people to come out and dance to that kind of music locally, just walk to the community hall and enjoy it,” she said.

The Fort Langley Community Hall was designed for music of that era, which makes it the perfect venue for the big band sound, and its ballroom floor is the only remaining horsehair dance floor in B.C., Zukas elaborated.

“It will really recreate that time period for people.”

Free swing dance lessons will be given by Suburban Swing when doors open at 7 p.m. The band will start at 8 p.m.

“They’ll dance the original swing dance of that era, and dance with people attending who want to dance with professional swing dancers,” Zukas said.

Those interested in attending can purchase tickets online at https://www. fortlangleyjazzfest.com/big-band-swingdance-fundraiser.

Violinist excited to share quartet’s music

Rose Gellert String Quartet wraps up the season on Friday, May 5 with hometown performance

Langley Community Music School (LCMS) is inviting the public for the final performance of the Transcending Genres concert series performed by the school’s own Rose Gellert String Quartet.

On Friday, May 5 at 7 p.m., the quartet will take the stage for the third and final time to conclude this concert season with Dmitri Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 3 in F Major, composed in 1946.

Established in 2016, the Rose Gellert String Quartet is the ensemble-in-residence at LCMS, and is comprised of violinists Llowyn Ball and Will Chen, cellist Ben Goheen, and violist Peter Ing.

“Part of the goal of the quartet is to provide musical outreach to the community. So, getting to play with these three guys is wonderful, but it’s also the opportunity to share this music,” violinist Ball said.

Ball regularly performs with the

Kamloops Symphony Orchestra, Okanagan Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver New Music, and Vancouver Island Symphony Orchestra. After studying at the UBC School of Music, he completed his masters degree in violin performance at the San

Francisco Conservatory of Music.

He is the newest member of the Rose Gellert String Quartet having joined three years ago.

Violinist Chen has performed across Canada, Europe, and the United Kingdom as a soloist and

chamber musician with the rising group Mainzer Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra.

He holds a bachelor of music from the University of Victoria, and a masters degree from Hochschule fur Musik Mainz, Germany.

Cellist and conductor Goheen has performed in symphonies across the Lower Mainland including BC Chamber Orchestra, Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra, and Canada West Chamber Orchestra.

He’s performed solo and in small chamber ensembles, and is the conductor of the Surrey Symphony Society’s Intermediate Strings. Goheen holds a masters degree in cello performance from the University of British Columbia.

Toronto-born Vancouver resident Ing freelances with various orchestras in the Lower Mainland and Thompson-Okanagan region. Since completing his masters degree at UBC, he has performed in music festivals across North America and Europe including Kent Blossom Music Fes-

tival, Colorado String Quartet Festival, the Casalmaggiore International Music Festival in Italy.

“Playing challenging and compelling repertoire at a high level with three of the best musicians I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with is professionally, and spiritually, rewarding,” Ball shared.

In addition to seasonal concerts, the Rose Gellert String Quartet teaches in the music school’s program and perform at seniors homes.

“That’s the other real privilege is getting to share this with the community. Part of the reason for the quartet to exist is to foster the next generation of chamber musicians and bring music into the community,” he said.

Tickets for the final Transcending Genres concert are $22 for adults, $20 for seniors, $10 for students, and free for LCMS students.

Artist’s new mural brightens McBurney

Judy Pohl finished her latest large-scale painting within five days

Langley artist Judy Pohl had a tight timeline for her latest mural, completing it within five days.

The vibrant mural of flowers, birds, piano keys, and a fluffy cat covers a once drab wall with an isolated sign box.

“I do a lot of murals on odd shapes and walls, and trying to incorporate stuff, like the sign, to hide it so nobody knows what was there,” she said. Her latest mural is located in McBurney Plaza, off Fraser Highway, in downtown Langley City.

“We were trying to bring some energy into the square with that wall,” she said.

Pohl, of Judy’s Custom Art Services, specializes in painting murals, chalkboards, storefront windows, and signs. She has several murals in downtown Langley through the years. Her fun cartoon window displays and chalkboard art can be seen at breweries, pubs, restaurants, and even as wooden signs with face cutouts for agri-tourism farms.

Her goal was to incorporate the summer spirit of McBurney Plaza into her mural, Pohl explained.

“When I started painting murals in downtown Langley, there was only one in McBurney Plaza, so it’s really grown and come a long ways.”

As a Langley City resident, Pohl said she takes pride in the public’s ability to enjoy her artwork.

“I love working with the business association, and I love how enthusiastic they are about the murals and having murals downtown.”

The Downtown Langley Business Association created the Mural Walk to guide people to the many mural in the city. Mural Walk is online.

Senior of the Year nominations welcomed

Seniors Centre accepting suggestions for annual award

The public can help choose the Langley Se-

niors of the Year.

The award is overseen by the Langley Seniors Resource Society Centre and it’s time to nominate deserving local seniors. The deadline to submit nominations is May 15.

“Local seniors aged 65 and over are nominated for the honour for their notable contributions to the community,” said Smitty Miller, the seniors centre manager of programs.

There’s some criteria to follow, such as residency requirements.

The people being nominated must live in either the City or Township, and must have lived in Langley for at least five years.

In the past, a woman and a man have been selected as Langley Seniors of the Year. Typically they

are a couple but that is not always the case. The judges selected two local people who have done a great deal for the community.

“The nominees do not have to be a couple, but we like having both a man and woman – not absolutely necessary, though,” Miller noted.

Bill and Arlene Pike are the current Seniors of the Year. They were first named to the position in 2021 but with COVID shutdowns, there was little for them to do, and they ended up staying in the role for a few years.

The judges want to know what the

nominees have done to contribute to the community, what organizations they’ve been with or helped, the length of service, and comments on just what their efforts have meant.

The winners are announced for Seniors Week in early June, and represent the

seniors community at local events during the year.

The person being nominated must accept having their names put forward.

The forms can be submitted at the seniors centre, 20605 51B Ave. and can be downloaded through the centre website lsrc.ca.

The annual The Sky’s No Limit – Girls Fly Too event that was cancelled last October returns Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30 to Abbotsford International Airport.

The event, hosted by the Langley-based Achieve Anything Foundation, runs from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day and includes free helicopter flights for female first-time fliers of all ages.

Langley pilot Kirsten Brazier founded the event in 2012.

Girls Fly Too is described as “the world’s largest gender diversity outreach event of its kind in aviation, aerospace, marine and defence.”

The event includes numerous displays and hand-on activities that are open – and free of charge – to everyone.

Visitors can expect to see aircraft and tactical assets from the Canadian Coast Guard,

RCMP and municipal police, cadets, search and rescue organizations, and Canadian and U.S. armed forces.

Among the VIPs on hand will be Heide Stefanyshyn-Piper, who spent 13 years as an astronaut with NASA, logging more then 27 days and 15 hours in space.

She flew on Mission STS115 on space shuttle Atlantis with Canadian astronaut

Steven MacLean in 2006 and Mission STS-126 on space shuttle Endeavour in 2008.

She completed five spacewalks totalling 33 hours and 42 minutes of extra-vehicular activity time.

Organizers said those conditions were “impossible to meet within the time frame remaining,” and they postponed the event. In late November, they announced that Girls Fly Too had been rescheduled for April 2023.

How to make $1,800, a loonie at a time

Shortreed Elementary’s PAC holds sales in the spring and fall

Shoppers loved the math.

Everything – whether it was a sequined backpack or a bread maker – was $1 at the Shortreed Dollar Sale on Friday, April 21.

The sale is run by the parent advisory council as one of its key fundraisers, and the money from Friday’s sale is earmarked for sound equipment.

“This year, we are fundraising for our sound system for our gym,” organizer Cashmere Roder explained. “So we have been hosting events throughout the year, and this is kind of one of our last big fundraisers to get the rest of the money.”

The twice yearly sale has been a winning formula for the PAC, allowing it to help out the school in various ways, includ-

ing providing food.

“Over the years we have paid for our playground. We have bought sports equipment,” she added. “We have helped the kids being able to go on field trips, and have performers and entertainment come into the school.”

The school borrowed the idea from Parkside Elementary which held a dollar sale several years ago. It started with a Shortreed dollar sale one Christmas and was adopted in the twice yearly sales which occur in April and November.

The pricing gives the customers predictability and makes it a bit easier on organizers since they don’t have to attach price tags to each item.

“The sale went well. We raised just over $1,800 for the students,” she said the next day.

Rollover footage sought Crash Saturday shut down 192nd Street

A rollover car crash on 192nd Street Saturday night, April 22, caused the road to be closed for a few hours so police could investigate.

Shortly before 11 p.m. on Saturday, Surrey RCMP responded to a single-vehicle rollover collision on 192nd Street, north of 82A Av-

enue.

The vehicle involved was travelling northbound on 192nd Street, and went off road right, striking a ditch, causing the vehicle to flip, according to an RCMP release.

Surrey RCMP and firefighters arrived on scene, and the driver was transported to a local hospital for medical assessment.

At the time of the collision, it is unknown whether speed or alcohol were a factor in this incident.

Anyone with more information, including dash cam footage around the area, is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.

Repurposing, recycling, winning

Popsicle sticks and elements of a blouse and earrings morphed in top City ‘up-cycle’ challenge entries

Two Langley City residents won an upcycling challenge for Earth Day in Langley City with two very different entries on Saturday.

Byron Murray, 11, won in his age category for his recycled wood vehicle, while Sandra Reams, 82, won for what she described as a “funky purse.”

Murray, who said he enjoys woodworking with his father, explained his entry was “kind of like a boat and a car together.”

“A lot of it’s Popsicle sticks and [parts from] this boat I made,” Murray told the Langley Advance Times His dad, Mike, who took third in the adult category with his staircase sculpture design, said Byron particularly enjoyed consuming the Popsicles that were used in the recycled design.

Reams assembled her win-

ning purse design from a variety of sources.

“So I love to go to the thrift store, and then I found an old grocery bag,” Reams said.

“Then I had this fun blouse, and I thought okay, I love the colours and the drape, so I sewed the blouse onto the bag, and then to decorate, I added earrings to give it a little personality.”

Both winners were awarded $50 worth of “downtown dollars” from the Downtown Langley Business Association. It marked the second time Earth Day has been held in Langley City.

Organized by the City environmental sustainability committee, with Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS), it included workshops on container gardening, making do-it-yourself cleaners, Earth Day bingo, kids games, and a plant and compost giveaway.

Langley will be one of more than 1,000 Canadian communities to take part in World Day of Prayer on Friday, April 28.

World Day of Prayer is a global ecumenical movement led by Christian women who invite people in their community to join in prayer and action for peace and justice.

The Langley event takes place next Friday starting at 1 p.m. in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church hall and is open to everyone. While it takes place in the hall at the Catholic church, the service involves women from multiple local churches of various denominations.

Offerings made at the service provide project grants that help women and children in Canada and around the world.

The Women’s Inter-Church Council of Canada, one of the founding organizations of this event, co-ordinates with local communities. An international committee based in New York oversees efforts internationally.

The theme I Have Heard about Your Faith is based on Ephesians 1:15-19.

“I have heard of your faith

in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power.”

Each year the program is prepared by women in a different country. This year Christians in Taiwan wrote the service. The most recent featured

countries were England, Wales and Northern Ireland (2022), Vanuatu (2021), Zimbabwe (2020), Slovenia (2019), Suriname (2018), the Philippines (2017), and Cuba (2016).

Taiwan is located in the Western Pacific region and in the center of the East and Southeast Asia Island Arcs.

With an approximate population of 23.6 million people, Taiwan is a densely populated multi-ethnic country. The characteristic of Taiwan as a society of immigrants is also reflected in its language, with the 16 officially recognized indigenous languages.

The earliest record of Taiwan church women’s participation in the World Day of Prayer dates back to March 1935 in the Taiwan Church Press. Since then, WDP has become an ecumenical prayer worship service that is familiar to the ears of Taiwanese Christian women. Each year, the worship handbook is translated into 13 languages including Mandarin-Chinese, Taiwanese, and indigenous languages that are used during worship services.

World Day of Prayer started about 100 years ago.

Museum’s Earth Day event takes off

Interactive displays explore how aviation is evolving to become a more eco-friendly form of travel

Canadian Museum of Flight in Langley hosted their first-ever Earth Day event on Saturday. Families were invited to explore the interactive exhibit and learn how aviation is evolving to become a more eco-friendly form of travel.

Volunteer Paulina Johnson said the event was a collective idea among staff and volunteers.

“We wanted to bring awareness to the kind of initiatives around aviation that people might not be aware of,” she said.

More online

The event featured planes, some still operable, that visitors could go in, and a scavenger hunt. If all the small Earths were found, a prize was won. Volunteers also had arts and crafts to make to remember the day.

“We’re celebrating all the new initiatives and technology that’s coming out about how the aviation industry can become more green,” said David McIntosh, flight opera-

tions training pilot and volunteer.

McIntosh started volunteering at the museum when he was 10 years old. Now, he teaches new pilots to fly the museum’s operable airplanes.

“It has sort of become like a second home for me, I’m very attached to this place.”

He said three or four airplanes will be flying this year.

Every third Saturday of the month, the museum hosts a drop-in Volunteer Day starting at 9:30 a.m. Anyone can attend to learn about aviation and help the museum look

after its aircraft.

“You don’t need to know anything about airplanes. Just come on in,” Johnson added.

The museum is also planning a Mother’s Day and Father’s Day event.

Anyone interested in volunteering at the museum or looking for upcoming event details can call 604-532-0035 or email info@canadianflight.org or visit http://www. canadianflight.org/.

Housing moves forward

371-unit complex passes first hurdles

Langley Township is likely moving forward with a major housing project just across the street from the Langley Events Centre.

The project, proposed for two properties at 199th Street and 78B Avenue, consists of 371 apartment units and more than 32,700 square feet of ground-floor commercial space, spread across four six-storey buildings. Nearby 78B Avenue will be transformed into a pedestrian greenway, closing the small, dead-end road to vehicle traffic.

Between the site and 200th Street is another property zoned for office park uses. Similar mixed-use residential and commercial projects are planned for many of the nearby properties.

The project is expected to generate $2.88 million in community amenity contributions (CACs) for the Township. CACs are used to build local amenities such as parks and rec centres.

The site is in the Jericho Sub-Neighbourhood Plan and is designated for high density mixed-use development. Projects of up to 20-storey are allowed in that area.

Council did not debate prior to voting in favour of three readings of the rezoning. Coun. Kim Richter was opposed.

If the project passes fourth reading at a future council meeting, it will be approved.

Get crafty for mom

Kids can make a card with plant items and a treat

Kids can create colourful or tasty gifts for Mother’s Day.

Im-press mom

Check around the yard, with family or friends for flowers and leaves to press. Press flowers and leaves between the sheets of a telephone book (yes, they still exist) or the newspaper and put additional weight on top (more books, for instance). The fleshier the flower, the longer it takes to dry.

After several days, the leaves and flowers have dried and are ready to make a card, poster or other art work for mom.

Mug cake

Make mom a chocolately treat. Depending on the child’s age, an adult may want to help.

2 tbsp. melted butter, margarin or oil

2 tbsp. milk, chocolate milk, or plant-based ‘milk’

1/4 tsp. vanilla extract

2 tbsp. white sugar

2 tbsp. unsweetended cocoa powder

4 tbsp. flour

dash of salt

Mix together the milk, butter/oil, salt, and vanilla in a microwave safe coffee mug. Mix the cocoa power, sugar and flour in a small bowl and

whisk into the mug mixture. Microwave for 60 seconds (check at about 45 seconds, depending on the power of the microwave).

Be careful not to overcookthe mug cake.

Garnish with a marshmallow while hot.

Serve with a spoon.

Mag showcases agri talent

Harvest launches in May online and on newsstands

Many of us – either in our childhood or later years – remember the feeling of the cool soil between our fingertips as we plunged our hands into the earth, planting our first gardens.

Months later, strawberries, carrots, tomatoes, herbs, and green bean vines abounded.

The beautiful thing about food and agriculture is the way it brings people together. You might think of memories such as a meal cooked with vegetables entirely from the garden, hand-churned butter melting on a freshly baked loaf of bread or colourful eggs fetched from the chickens out back as children run around and play.

This is what HARVEST is about, a new monthly magazine published from May to October, highlighting and showcasing B.C.’s hardworking and creative individuals who bring us food, gastronomy, agriculture, and agri-tourism, travel, and the many talented artisans influenced by these industries.

In a fast-paced society, the moments of togetherness remind us to slow down and appreciate what’s around us.

It’s the dedication of those tending to tiny seeds, patiently waiting for them to blossom into something bigger that can be shared with others.

It’s the farmer raising livestock, seeing them grow strong, harvesting fields and finding sustainable ways to produce food and other products.

It’s combining the art of tradition with new technologies and allowing that ancient wisdom to guide our future decisions.

HARVEST is available on community newsstands and

online through our newspapers across the province.

We hope you’ll tuck this magazine in your bag and enjoy it over a leisurely lunch in the sun, inspiring you to start your own garden or try a new recipe, explore a farm in your area, or think up new ways to give back to the earth and your community.

Black Press Media is proud to present HARVEST. To read the first edition, you can visit your local Black Press Media news site and check out the e-edition or stop by the local office the first week of May.

Saran family hosts

fifth annual event for autism group

A Murrayville family is stepping forward once again to mark Autism Awareness Month by helping others.

Hosting their annual bottle drive on Saturday, April 29 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Saran family has promised to support the non-profit Canucks Autism Network (CAN) for the fifth time in a row. Their goal is to raise a record $10,000.

The family has partnered with Ralph’s Farm Market, owned by Meridian Farm Market, to join its annual barbeque and silent auction.

The cause is close to the Saran family, as their 12-year-old son, Ethan, was diagnosed with autism at age five. Brody McDearmid, owner of Meridian Farm Market, has a son who was diagnosed with autism and raises awareness at his stories every year as well.

CAN’s goal is to provide support for children.

“They helped us out so much, not just with activities but also providing insight on how we can

get further assistance for Ethan,” Sherry said.

The annual bottle drive draws great community support.

“Our Langley community has such a big heart and the support they give us every year, we can’t thank them enough,” she said.

All the proceeds are donated to CAN, and the Saran family will match what donations are raised from the bottle drive.

For those unable to attend the bottle drive can bring their bottles to the nearest Return-It Depot and enter Saran’s number 778-322-7696 to receive a tag to place on the bag of bottles. The depot staff will sort out the bottles and credit the Canucks Autism account.

Each year Saran hears from parents and grandparents about their kids being diagnosed.

“If anybody needs that support or direction, if there’s anything I can do to help them, my number is the best way to reach me,” she noted.

During, Ralph’s Farm Market has certain items available for purchase and part of the proceeds go towards CAN.

The Sarans’ event takes place in the parking lot of Ralph’s Farm Market, 22728 Fraser Hwy. There will be a prize wheel to spin and a chance to draw a $100 gift card to Ralph’s. Township fire trucks will be on site for kids to view.

British car enthusiasts roar into village

Langley Area Mostly British club 19th annual car show features classic and modern vehicles

More than 40 British-made cars, and one Volkswagen Beetle, occupied the front and side lawns of the historic Fort Langley Community Hall on Glover Road on Sunday, April 23, for the 19th annual St. George’s Day Car Show held by the Langley Area Mostly British (LAMB) car club.

LAMB president Linda Spouler explained the VW was covered by the “mostly” part of the car club’s name.

Spouler and her husband, Harry, who live in Ladner, brought their beautifully restored 1950 Triumph Mayflower, rescued from a shop where it was being used for paint and bodywork practice.

with classic sports cars sharing space with sleek modern rides.

Aldergrove’s Ian and Doreen Davidson-Newby brought their classic double-decker 1951 Leyland RTL bus, a perennial favourite at the event.

Doreen, in a period-accurate uniform with a “conductoress” badge, was greeting visitors.

Ian explained the bus was used in the film To Sir, With Love, then converted to a fully self-contained tourist office on wheels and shipped to Canada, where it was driven from coast to coast, before eventually ending up south of the border.

More online

Sometimes referred to as the “baby Bentley” for its resemblance to the legendary car brand, the Mayflower was far slower.

“It was made for three years, until they discovered that it was so slow, it couldn’t keep up with driving,” Spouler said.

“It was only for English country roads.”

This particular Mayflower has been modified with an engine from a Triumph sports car, “so that it can at least go to 60 miles an hour now.”

The show had a range of new and old,

“It was sitting covered with moss in a yard in Edmonds, Wash.,” Ian recalled.

“And the lady that owned it had, fortunately, run out of money before she had a chance to take the top deck [off], gut it and turn it into a boutique. Luckily, she never been able to get it running. We were, and we drove it home, and it’s been at every Saint George’s Day in Langley for about the last 15 years as a British icon.”

St. George is the patron saint of England. LAMB tries to hold its annual car show as close as possible to April 23, the day that pays tribute to him. To find out more about LAMB visit lambcarclub.org.

Lawn bowlers kick off season with sale

Langley Lawn Bowling Club is credited with reuniting two estranged relaties, who haven’t seen each other for 20-plus years.

In an effort to engage with and welcome in the community for its next season, the lawn bowling club held a garage sale on Saturday, April 15.

The event brought people of all ages together to browse and buy items ranging from puzzles to dishware – and even a Foosball table – all donated by club members.

Well, the garage sale achieved that and more.

It also reunited 90-year-old Andy Anderson with his niece, Linda Schiefke, whom he hadn’t seen in more than two decades.

They came to the garage sale on a whim, hearing about it from neighbours. Schiefke moved to Walnut Grove two years ago from Port Co-

quitlam, where she lived for 30 years.

“We’ve been apart for a long time, and it’s so sad that it happened. But my love has always been there with the family, and I’m so happy that we crashed into each other,” Anderson said of their reunion.

When they caught up, it was like nothing had changed, Schiefke said.

“I’m so blessed.”

The lawn bowling club is located on 54th Avenue at Douglas Park in Langley City.

Penny Wellar, a new coach, said the club is open to people of all ages.

“We’ve had members who have been here for many years, and we found after COVID that we were dwindling in our membership. So, we wanted to re-introduce the community to the fact we have a lawn bowling club here,” she said.

Alan Gregson, president of the club, said it’s one of the cheapest sports to play.

“All you really need for the first

couple years is a good pair of shoes,” he said. “We have balls in the club people can use, available for rent after the first year for $25 per year.”

Whereas many sports can be expen-

sive up front, lawn bowling doesn’t cost more to play more, Wellar said.

The club offers drop-in sessions on Wednesdays and Fridays at 6:30 p.m. starting May 3.

Its official opening day comes complete with an open house Saturday, April 29, at 1 p.m. Visitors and new bowlers are welcome.

Hurst plays for Canada

Langley’s Brendon Hurst has been named to Canada’s national para hockey development team for a three-game series against the United States, April 27 to 30 at the Aréna Howie-Morenz in Montreal.

He is one of four defensemen named to the team.

Hurst, who has been playing para hockey for six years, will be making his international debut.

His addition to the team comes after Hurst attended a Para Hockey Team NextGen development camp in Montreal in February.

Chen wins Classic

Langley golden Rose Zhiyan Chen, 14, opened the MJT G&G Brands Classic at GreenTee Country Club in Langley April 22 and 23, with a blazing six-under-66 and never looked back on her way to claiming Low Overall and MJT Girls U15 Champion.

“I feel really accomplished, especially with my six under on the first day,” said Chen.  “My approach shots were consistent on the first day, and my putting was pretty good.”

Other Langley golfers did well, with Ryan LePrieur taking second in bantam boys, while Ethan Langston was third in junior boys, and Soohan Park won closest to the pin in juvenile boys.

McGynn ties record

Langley’s Abby McGlynn tied the SFU and GNAC records for most doubles in a single softball game during a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader Monday at Beedie Field.

McGlynn, a sophomore left fielder, recorded three doubles in the opener, in what turned out to be a losing cause, as the SFU Red Leafs fell to the Wildcats 11-6 and 10-4.

“When I talk about hitters mashing the ball, Abby is in the conversation every single day. It is very cool to see her tie the SFU and GNAC records,” said Stacy Fournier, interim head coach of the Red Leafs.

Fournier described McGynn as one of the players “who always put their best effort forward, and we can appreciate that even if we do end up on the losing side of things.”

More than 400 gymnasts from across B.C. competed in the 2023 Compulsory Gymnastics BC Championships, hosted by the Langley Gymnastics Foundation (LGF) at their home base, the Langley Events Centre, from Friday, April 21, to Sunday, April 23.

Seen as an event for younger, up-andcoming gymnasts who compete in women’s artistic gymnastics (WAG) at Canadian Competitive Program (CCP) levels 1 to 5, it ended with all-around wins by three LGF athletes; Lyla Slade, Amberly Maslanka and Ryleigh McMartin, along with other club members who recorded multiple topthree finishes in individual events (vault, bars, beam and floor).

LGF WAG head coach Paulo Pena Silva was pleased with their performance, describing the championships as “a really successful event” for the club.

“All the athletes left everything they had inside the competition arena, making us very proud to be part of LGF,” Pena Silva told the Langley Advance Times.

Langley Gymnastics Foundation athletes Aria Armstrong, 8, and Nyah Hayes, 7, (above) competed Saturday, April 22, in the 2023 Compulsory Gymnastics BC Championships, hosted by LGF at the Langley Events Centre, from Friday, to Sunday.

Blake, 8, from Langley’s Flip City Gymnastics (below centre, in orange, yellow and red), waited her turn. (Dan Ferguson/Langley Advance Times)

Martinoff wins Open

nine-year-old Calloway.

Langley’s Ayla Martinoff wore many hats in winning the Emily Sandhack Open Classic 1.35m at Thunderbird Show Park on Saturday. With two mounts in the class, she was not just the rider, trainer, and owner. She also bred both horses, including her winning mount,

In Calloway’s first show since October, the small-butmighty 16-hand grey Holsteiner gelding showed little rust in besting a five-horse jump-off.

Their winning time was 39.8 seconds. Sarah Lottis and Zaza Z finished second (39.91 seconds), with Jaehee Jeon and Bless You BFE third (42.51 seconds).

“I didn’t take him to California [this winter], so it was

nice to bring him out and get going like that!” Martinoff said.

“I went first in the jumpoff, and my friend, Sarah [Lottis], was just behind me,” she added.

“I knew I had to go fast with her in the class!”

Calloway’s full sister, sevenyear-old A Crown Royale, also jumped the class, with just a single rail down in the mare’s first ever 1.35m competition.

Keith takes Maui Jim

Aldergrove rider returns to tbird

The last time Aldergrove’s Kassidy Keith showed at Thunderbird Show Park, she brought the 2022 show season to a close with a win in the CSIU25-A MarBill Hill U25 Grand Prix.

As the 2023 April season opener kicked off tbird’s 50th anniversary show season, Keith wasted no time returning to the front of a featured victory lap. She and longtime partner Havana topped the $10,000 Maui Jim Grand Prix 1.40m on Sunday, April 23, besting a five-horse jumpoff.

“She was jumping very well today, so she was spending more time in the air than normal,” Keith explained. “She was jumping so well, [but she was also] really quick across the ground and turned well.”

The lead repeatedly changed hands through the first three riders, all of whom jumped clear and would ultimately make up the podium. But it was Keith who would hold on to the lead.

Keith enters the season at tbird with a new set of “firsts” under her belt. The 25-year-old young professional spent a month in Europe over the winter, riding for well-known horse dealer Desiree Johnson. She jumped her first World Cup qualifier in the fall with Havana, whom she’s developed since the mare was four years

old, and over the winter, they were fifth in a four-star ranking class at Desert International Horse Park in Thermal, Calif.

“In the fall, she and I jumped the World Cup together [in Sacramento], and after that, I felt like she could do almost anything,” Keith said. “She has a heart of gold and always tries her hardest.”

Victory history making

Langley-based expansion team records its first win

Vancouver Football Club (VFC) recorded a historic win, the first in the history of the newly formed soccer team, by downing York United 2-1 at York Lions Stadium on Saturday, April 22.

After going scoreless in their first two games as a club, VFC wasted no time in making history on Saturday afternoon, when Shaan Hundal got the first-ever goal for the Langley-based expansion team just six minutes in, stealing the ball off Mo Babouli and finishing for 1-0.

Vancouver doubled their lead quickly when Gabriel Bitar was brought down in the box, and Gael Sandoval buried the penalty from the spot.

York got one back off the foot of youngster Markiyan Voytsekhovskyy, who smashed in his first professional goal from distance later in the first half, but that was as far as they got.

“I think the players were very motivated,” said Vancouver coach Afshin Ghotbi postmatch.

“They felt a little bit cheated from Wednesday night [when they lost to York], and then they came into this game wanting to make a statement and show the right reaction. I think the reaction was firm, and we played quite well in the first 15 to 20 minutes.”

Vancouver FC’s Gabriel Bitar was named CanPL.ca

player of the match.

Bitar created four chances, and it was his run into the box that won the penalty for Vancouver’s winning goal.

A team-high 18 of Bitar’s 20 total passes were in the final third.

Ghotbi called Bitar the most valuable player of the match in his postgame comments, lauding his creativity in particular.

On Saturday, April 29, Vancouver will head to Nova Scotia to play Halifax Wanderers.

Vancouver is scheduled to host its inaugural home match on Sunday, May 7, against Cavalry FC in what has been described as the first soccer-specific stadium in the Lower Mainland, built recently next to the Langley Events Centre.

In loving memory of Perry, Walter Gerald

September 5, 1948 – April 12, 2023

Walter (74) passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Joan of 53 years, two loving daughters, Jillian (Marnie) and Melisa (Daniel) and his two wonderful grandsons, Finn (10) and Shea (7) who could always brighten his day.

Walter was born and raised in Langley and ran a successful Water Well Drilling business for 25 years. You could find Walter at local car shows with his 1953 Studebaker or drinking coffee at Timmies with his friends.

A celebration of Life will be held on May 7 at 2:00 at Adrian’s At The Airport, 5385 216 Street, Langley.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

In loving memory of Irma Elizabeth Cockett

Born 1922-December-23 – Grand Valley, Ont.

Passed 2023-April-04 – Langley, BC

Irma passed away peacefully in her sleep in her 100th year. She and her husband, Ron, were long-time residents of Murrayville, where they lived on OldYale Road, just up from PY Porter’s general store. In 1989 they moved to Parkway

Two, beside Douglas Park, where she remained after Ron passed away in 1991. Her greatest moments of late have been sitting by the patio doors and listening to children laughing and playing in the schoolyard next door. Our many thanks go out to the care workers who assisted our mother, which allowed her to stay in her home, as well as the many residents of Parkway Two that went out of their way to make sure she was comfortable in her condo.

Irma is survived by a daughter, Pat (Norm), son Ted (Irene), grandchildren Shari (Sean), Dean (Luzelle), Tasha, Shanda and Danica (Jesse), great-grandchildren Colton, Madison, Chase, Bowen, Winston and Irie, and many nieces and nephews including Marie, Irene and Byron who maintained constant visits to help fill her days. We miss her already and are grateful we had her for as long as we did.

Peace be with you, Mom...

As Long as Hearts Remember

Mom passed away peacefully with family by her side at Cedar Hill Care Center in Langley. Claudette was born in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan. Creston, BC is where she met our Dad, Donald, and they got married on January 22, 1955. They raised our family in Riondel, BC, a small mining community in the Kootenays, until the mine shut down in 1972 and they moved to “the coast”, settling in New Westminster.

She is survived by her 4 children - Kim (Glenn), Donna (Allan), Greg (Susan) and Diana (Israel); 8 grandchildren - Lynda, Jason (Nicole), Cheryl (Matt), Ashley (Uche), Adam, Diego, Alexis and Jesse; 6 great-grandchildren - Rosie, Elijah, Nevaeh, Jacob, Samantha and Chinelo; and 3 grand-puppies - Cali, Chloe and Wilbur. She is predeceased by our Dad (in 2005), her loving husband and high school sweetheart, Donald (Don), with whom she celebrated 50 years of marriage; her parents, brother Starleigh and infant sister.

Mom (Granny) was a sweet little lady with spunk and a fire inside that took everyone who knew her by surprise. She was happiest when she was with her family. Everywhere she went she made wonderful friendships. Together, with our Dad, she gave us a happy, fun and memorable childhood and supported and encouraged us throughout our lives. It was our pleasure and honor to return the favor, spending time with her, loving her and caring for her after our Dad passed away and as she grew older.

We would like to extend our sincere thank you and appreciation to the caring and compassionate staff at Cedar Hill Center. She also received excellent care from the kind staff at Chartwell Langley Gardens in Langley and Chartwell Willow in Maple Ridge.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Mom requested any donations to go to the Children’s Hospital.

Rest in peace Mom! We love you!

Student artists learn to create on deadline

In this year’s Design An Ad program, Grade 4 kids were excited to develop creative advertisements for Langley businesses

Marlene Nelson’s Grade 4 class is anxiously awaiting the arrival of today’s Langley Advance Times weekly newspaper on their doorsteps. It will reveal which of her division 4 students’ ads were selected to be in this annual Design An Ad special section.

Nelson’s class was among a dozen from around Langley picked to participate in this year’s Design An Ad program, where students are invited to demonstrate their artistic prowess by creating dynamic advertising messages for select Langley businesses.

Nelson, currently a teacher at Donna Gabriel Robins Elementary, has been involved in the program for several years running.

“I have worked at several schools and have been blessed to access it for many years now. Design An Ad is always a highlight of our year,” the teacher shared.

“I can testify to the success of the program on many levels,” Nelson added.

“So many curricular areas were addressed. Presenters are always friendly and were able to share their need with children at a level they could understand. And, students were free to ask questions, given choice of companies to create for, and given freedom artistically with how they were going to share their message,” she explained.

Nelson was anxious to be part of this yearly initiative because it offers so many learning and growing opportunities for her students.

“Having a real-world reason to think about advertising helped to develop their critical thinking skills,” she said.

“The quality of the work students produced was greater because of this. I have had some excellent artists. But what catches attention and matters to consumers can be different.”

While some kids like James-

on, nine, were thrilled to participate, other kids felt the pressure of having several ads to finish on deadline, Nelson said.

“It was exciting to know that one of my ads might be in the newspaper,” said Jameson. Whereas Reid, also nine, said: “It was scary if you actually got it into the paper –what if I mess up?”

Likewise, Pippa enjoyed it, but got a true taste of working in the advertising industry.

“I love art and it was a chance to draw all week long,” the youngster said. But, “it was challenging to get all the ads finished in time.”

It gave the Grade 4 students a chance to experience what someone working in the profession of ad development might feel, said Nelson.

When her class was all finished their pieces, and before the artwork was gathered up for delivery to the advertisers for selection, Keira looked over her classmate’s work and was impressed by the quality.

“There was lots of competition as we have so many good

artists in our class alone,” she said. These nine-year-olds were among more than 300 students who participated in

this year’s program.

“As an old girl, who grew up in the age of newspapers… it made me feel happy to share
