What is CMA and why do we need one?

A comparative market analysis (CMA) is a report that estimates your home’s value by comparing it to similar properties that have recently sold.

Online home evaluations are quick and easy but they generally aren’t very accurate as they don’t take the finer details into account. It’s better to have a knowledgeable Realtor do a walkthrough so they can see your home firsthand.

The CMA report, which is usually complimentary and comes with no obligations, is essential to setting a competitive asking price. The right price is crucial to achieving a successful sale and is also helpful during negotiations as concrete facts will help justify your asking price.

In addition to homes that have recently sold in your area, your agent will research current homes on the market as well as homes that didn’t sell. It’s important to compare homes that are similar in stlye, square footage, etc. and to adjust for factors such as finished basements, double car garages and overall condition.

No, in order to be married, you must participate in a legally recognized marriage ceremony.

However, if you have lived together for two or more years in a marriage-like relationship then you are considered spouses in British Columbia. Being a Alison McMeans spouse means that you have certain rights under the Lawyer law, and also obligations towards the other person.

There are some other obligations that may arise when you live with someone for less than two years, but they are not obligations between spouses.Your change in living arrangements can affect matters between yourself and a third party, such as a government agency or a child.

The Centre for Child Development is celebrating 70 years of helping special-needs children in the Lower Mainland.

The centre was incorporated as a non-profit in 1954 but its inception actually happened a year prior.

Judith Reaugh, vice-president of communications and governance, said the organization started as a grass-roots group made up of parents in living rooms. The centre saw a need for children with cerebral palsy who needed transportation to GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre in Vancouver. From there, the Centre for Child Development was born.

The centre provides patient-focused, wrap-around services for children with disabilities in the South Fraser region. The facility’s mission statement, as stated on its website is, “helping children with special needs reach their potential.” It does this in a number of different ways. Depending on the child’s needs, the centre has access to physical and occupational therapists, nutritionists, a speech therapist and many other specialists.

Based in Surrey, the centre serves nearly 4,000 children each year through more than 30,000 sessions at more than 350 locations – including inside schools – in Surrey, White Rock, Delta, and Langley. Many of the staff have worked at the centre for decades.

While the majority of funding for the facility comes from the provincial government, it does have programs that are specifically funded by donors. The money is raised through three annual fundraisers.

Two groups of protesters clash in Surrey over SOGI in schools Anti-SOGI protest was missed opportunity to educate, local teacher says Anna Burns anna.burns@surreynowleader.com

A large crowd of protesters and counter-protestors faced off in the pouring rain in Surrey on Saturday. The two groups were in disagreement about the sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) curriculum used in B.C. schools.

Annie Ohana, an educator at L.A. Matheson Secondary, passed by the rally and said it was a missed opportunity to educate people about SOGI. Ohana feels there is a misunderstanding of what SOGI is.

As an educator with degrees in criminology, political science and education, Ohana has in-depth knowledge of the SOGI curriculum.

“I really do feel that there’s really a misunderstanding of what we are teaching in our schools,” Ohana said.

She said she is always willing to talk with parents about any concerns they may have about the curriculum. She added that all of the books they use in the SOGI curriculum are vetted and age-appropriate.

“As teachers, we’re not there to indoc-

trinate anybody. If kids and parents have values that are different we will do what we can to make sure that those kids are safe,” Ohana said. “But at the end of the day, human rights prevail, as a teacher, I have to follow the Human Rights Code and in B.C. in Canada, that includes gender identity and sexual orientation.”

She said there are lots of resources available for parents to see what the curriculum is all about.

Ohana, who is also on the board of Sher Vancouver, a non-profit that supports queer South Asians, their family and friends, empathized with the hurt the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community feels and understood the anger that was seen at Saturday’s rally.

At times the counter-protestors could be heard yelling over the other group. The dozen or so police officers that were there stepped in at these moments to separate the two groups.

Ohana felt that neither side really heard the other. Instead of a small group gathering together for respectful dialogue, “there we are standing in the rain, just screaming at each other,” Ohana added.

The counter-protests were led by the group Community Over Convoys. Steph, a representative from the group, said they showed up in support of SOGI and trans children.

“We all deserve to celebrate our differences,” Steph said, adding that education plays a huge role in that.

In Abbotsford, a provincial inspection of a waste facility found toxic chemicals being discharged into a fish-bearing creek. GFL, under contract with the City of Abbotsford, was flagged by the Ministry of Environment on March 15, 2022 for its waste discharge into a ditch network that feeds Lonzo Creek.

Seniors housing project gets $6.2M grant from province Malin Jordan Black Press Media

A new seniors’ affordable housing project will be built in Cloverdale.

Zappone Manor, named for lifelong Cloverdale resident Bruno Zappone, will be located at 5956 176A Street.

The apartment building has been in the works for several years, but because of a funding shortfall, and increases in costs for everything related to it, the project had been stalled.

Now the provincial government has stepped in to provide more than $6 million to get it going again.

“This new project will help ensure a supply of quality, affordable homes for seniors in Cloverdale so they aren’t forced to move away from the community they call home,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Housing.

Zappone Manor will replace a 50-unit residence that is several decades old and ready to be torn down. The new build will add another 39 units for a total of 89.

The five-storey building will have mostly studio apartments with a smattering of one-bedroom suites. Residents will remain in their existing homes during construction and will move into the new development when construction is complete.

Mike Garisto, president and chief operating officer Columbus Homes, the group building the new residence, said the $6.2 million was instrumental in getting the project over its final hurdle.

“This project has been one of the most challenging projects to date with the fluctuating interest rates and rising construction costs,” he said.

“This funding announcement today means the building can move ahead. If we didn’t get this funding, we wouldn’t be able to move it forward on our own because the rents just don’t support this kind of project.”

He said the overall project is being done in a partnership between the Seniors Citizens Housing of South Surrey Society (SCHSSS)

and Columbus Homes, an organization sponsored by the Knights of Columbus councils of greater Vancouver and the Fraser Valley in an effort to provide affordable seniors’ housing.

The total cost of the project is about $35 million, including the value of the land (about $11 million), which is being provided by SCHSSS, with Columbus Homes kicking in about $4.7 million.

The rest of the money will be provided through a mortgage.

Garisto added the rents will run about 30 to 50 per cent below market rates.

Mike Starchuk, MLA for Surrey-Cloverdale, said the money for the project is part of B.C.’s 10-year, $7-billion housing plan.

“When I first heard about this project, last Remembrance Day, Mike (Garisto) told me there was a funding shortfall,” said Starchuk.

“Then, about a month ago, when we started looking at the budget surplus, this became a no-brainer. There is such a need here.”

Starchuk said the new units represent a significant increase in affordable housing spaces for seniors in Cloverdale.

“The hope is that not only do we add spaces into what this building is, but that with the other structures that are back behind there, as those residents move into the new structure, we can work on permits to demolish and build new structures to provide even more housing,” said Starchuk. “So, we have the ability to almost triple the amount of spaces that are here.”

Brenda McCormick, Bruno Zappone’s daughter, said she was thrilled to know her dad was going to be honoured in this way. She said when she walked in and saw the poster boards with the building’s design and her dad’s name down in the corner, it brought tears to her eyes.

“It warmed my heart,” said McCormick. “I’m very honoured. I’m so proud of my dad and what he did over the years. Ninety-five years, he lived his whole life in Cloverdale.”

Zappone passed away in 2021. He was a longtime volunteer, past Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce president, volunteer firefighter, heritage supporter and champion of all things Cloverdale.

Construction of the project is now awaiting permit approval from the City of Surrey. Garisto said, if permits come through on time, they’ll get shovels in the ground in early fall, 2023.

If there is a delay in permit approval, they’ll have to wait until spring, 2024, to start the project.

People-pets sleepover at shelter’s ‘Pawty’

Humans and animals shared sleeping quarters during a Surrey-first overnight fundraiser last weekend.

The “Shelter Slumber Pawty” at Surrey Animal Resource Centre (SARC) has raised close to $18,000 and counting, with donations collected on canadahelps.org until Monday, April 3.

For 24 hours starting noon Saturday (March 25), the facility on Colebrook Road welcomed people to eat, sleep and play with the pets there.

Activities included a whipped-cream pie eating contest, paintings created by the humans and their animal pals for auction, a hot dog toss, bedtime stories and more.

The facility’s Facebook page streamed video of the activities.

The Slumber Pawty was a chance for two teams and 15 participants “to get to know some of the animals in the shelter and see what it’s like to live here,” said SARC manager Shelley Joaquin four weeks ago, when the fundraiser was launched by the City of Surrey’s municipal shelter for surrendered and lost animals.

SARC was the first shelter in B.C. to participate in the international “Slumber Pawty” event.

Work to build a new Pattullo Bridge will mean a full closure of the crossing during six days in April, “to ensure safety of crews and bridge users,” TransLink said Tuesday (March 28).

Lanes in both directions will be blocked leading up to Easter weekend and beyond, from Thursday, April 6 at 10 p.m. until Tuesday, April 11 at 5 a.m.

During that time, the Surrey-New Westminster connector will remain open to pedestrians, cyclists and first responders.

TransLink says the closure is necessary to complete work including soil densification activities, paving and relocation of the seismic warning system. “The warning system will be temporarily

Pile installation is complete for the two in-river foundations, the website says. Construction continues on the main tower of the new bridge and the in-river foundation near the New Westminster shoreline.

In Surrey, construction is underway on all bridge foundations and pile installation is underway for the Highway 17 off-ramp foundations. Upcoming activities include continued construction of the main bridge foundations and ongoing site preparation and road work along 112 Avenue and Highway 17.

More than 100 people lined up in the pouring rain Saturday to be the first through the doors for the grand opening of Dasio, a Japanese variety discount store new to Surrey.

The Strawberry Hill Mall location is the fourth store in Canada and 95th in North America.

The 6,901-square-foot store carries every trinket you can think of, from an egg de-sheller to home organization, decor, novelty items, Asian snacks and more. The first 100 customers on the opening weekend who spent over $40 received a Goodie Bag. Guildford residents Wilf Moeller and Claudia Pang were first in line for the grand opening. They often travelled to Daiso’s Richmond location, so they were excited to see the store in their community. Moeller said that the store has excellent Japanese products.

Daiso was founded in Japan in 1977 and opened its first store in Canada in 2021. It has over 5,500 stores across the globe.

A 21-year-old man is dead after being ejected from his car when it struck a centre median and tree in Newton on March 23.

Police say that around midnight a black Jaguar sedan was travelling west on 72 Avenue at high speeds

when the crash happened.

Police say the driver lost control and smashed into a tree in the centre median. Surrey RCMP says it appears speed was a factor. No other vehicles were involved.

A Black Press freelancer at the scene said the force of the crash ejected the driver and caused the sedan to roll over. The engine block

was lodged against another tree.

Police closed 72nd Avenue from 132nd Street to 130th Street.

Unprecedented construction needed to offset record immigration: Report Home construction in B.C. will need to rise to unprecedented levels to offset the impact of record immigration on the housing market, the B.C. Real Estate Association said in a new report on Tuesday.

The province must build 25 per cent more new homes than usual for the next five years to address deteriorating housing affordability, the association said in the report.

Construction needs to be ramped up to a record 43,000 housing completions a year for the next five years to counteract rapid population growth, up from an average of

around 30,000 between 2000 and 2022, it said.

“While this pace of completions is close to that achieved from 2020 and 2021, higher interest rates and weaker market conditions make that rate of completion less likely,” the association said.

Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland’s 2023 federal budget promises “transformative investments” in Canada’s green economy as the country tries to maintain its place in the global clean tech revolution and realign its supply chains toward allies who won’t use energy as a political weapon.

The budget promises to add more than $8 billion in new program spending in the coming fiscal year with a deficit of $40 billion.

Over the next five years the government expects to spend $60 billion more than before, almost half of it to increase health transfers to the provinces and territories and further expand the national dental-care program the Liberals are creating as part of their deal with the New Democrats.

Dental care is expected to cost more than $13 billion over the next five years, about a $7-billion increase from what the government said it would cost when it was introduced in last year’s budget. Dental care was one of the NDP’s key asks from the Liberals when the opposition party entered into a confidence-and-supply agreement in March 2022 to back the minority government on key confidence votes, through to 2025.

More than one-third of new spending is for investments in clean-tech industries, mostly investment tax credits to drive the private sector in clean electricity, hydrogen production, critical minerals, and the electric-vehicle supply chain.

Freeland’s budget also gives a nod to the anxiety many families are feeling from inflation, adding another top-up to GST rebate cheques for lower-income families this spring.

“We all know that our most vulnerable friends and neighbours are still feeling the bite of higher prices,” Freeland said in her speech.

The Surrey Board of Trade said it was hoping to see more tax help for businesses – and something specifically for Surrey.

“The Surrey Board of Trade is pleased to hear about investments in hydrogen, supply chain, skills and labour, infrastructure, and transportation,” said Anita Huberman, board president & CEO. “We needed to hear more support for business, including a commitment to a comprehensive tax review.

“We are disappointed that no Surrey specific projects were mentioned in this budget. Surrey is going to be the largest city in British Columbia and is starved of infrastructure and transportation investments. We also have the greatest number of manufacturers in B.C. and would be a prime location for battery manufacturers and recyclers.”

Members of the Surrey RCMP and Surrey Police Service, as well as heavily armed Emergency Response Team police, surrounded a house in Whalley at 8:11 a.m. on March 23 responding to a weapons call.

They arrested multiple people but later released them, and did not find a weapon.

It happened in the 12900-block of 104 Avenue, near Old Yale Road, involving a heavy police presence.

A Surrey RCMP spokesperson said the matter was “resolved” by 12:13 p.m.

“We didn’t have any reports of injuries,” the Now-Leader was told. “Everybody was released and no weapons were located.”

But a freelancer on the scene said paramedics provided medical treatment to someone on the scene, for reasons unknown.

“I do not have the exact number of persons that were taken into custody at this time, but I can tell you that there were approximately 14 people inside the residence,”

A man was arrested in Delta Monday after allegedly crashing a stolen vehicle he was driving while impaired.

According to a news release, Delta police were called at around 12:45 p.m. on March 27 regarding an unknown person passed out behind the wheel of a pickup truck in the 4900 block of Westminster Avenue in Ladner.

Police say a concerned citizen checked on the man to ensure his welfare, and once the man was awake, he drove away.

About four blocks later, the driver crashed the truck into two parked cars.

“When the dispatchers queried the licence plate, [they] learned the truck had been stolen from Tsawwassen that same morning,” the release states.

“Following the crash, the suspect driver attempted to flee the scene but was detained by witnesses and Delta firefighters until the arrival of the responding police officers.”

According to police, there were no “significant injuries” stemming from the incident.

The suspect’s name will not be released until charges are formally sworn.

One person is dead after a train hit a car near the 200th Street crossing in Langley City Sunday.

Langley RCMP Staff Sgt. Roger Green said officers were called after a report

came in at 7:20 a.m. about a car on the tracks.

By the time they arrived, the car, a small four-door sedan, had been hit by a westbound freight train and dragged down the tracks

toward the Fraser Highway crossing.

Fire crews managed to extricate the lone male occupant of the car, but he died of his injuries.

Federal drug unit action in Surrey part of ‘major’ synthetic-opioid bust Tracy Holmes Black Press Media

A search warrant that brought the Mounties’ Federal Clandestine Laboratory Team to Surrey earlier this month was part of a major organized-crime investigation that spanned national boundaries.

On March 16, officials with the Federal Serious and Organized Crime announced four arrests and the seizure of millions of doses of potentially toxic drugs and precursor chemicals, in connection with warrants executed in five Lower Mainland cities.

Clark confirmed that police activity at a home near 134 Street and 26 Avenue in South Surrey on March 1 was part of that investigation.

While a news tip sent to Black Press Media reported that one person was seen arrested at the targeted Surrey home, Clark would not disclose where any of the four arrests – one of which was described as a “Provincial Targeting Enforcement Priority” for his alleged involvement in the ongoing violent gang conflict in Metro Vancouver – took place, nor would he share what police found at the scene.

According to a news release, a total of 11 search warrants were

executed simultaneously across Vancouver, North Vancouver, Delta, Richmond and Surrey in connection with the investigation.

The seizures resulted in “significant seizures of various types of finished pills and pressed tablets, three firearms, cash, electronic devices, significant quantities of precursor chemicals, and multi-kilograms of other illicit substances,” the release states.

“Located at one of the sites was a significantly advanced pill pressing operation capable of producing approximately 60,000 pills per hour when in full operation. Although a large number of additional seized

exhibits are still being processed, current estimates put the total quantity of pills seized to be in excess of one million tablets.”

The operation began in September 2022 and “quickly revealed that several individuals” were involved in the ongoing B.C. gang conflict.

Other agencies involved in the operation included FSOC’s Major Projects and Border Integrity teams; the BC RCMP Lower Mainland District Emergency Response Team; Surrey, North Vancouver, and Richmond RCMP; Vancouver Police Department (VPD) Emergency Response Team; VPD; and the BC RCMP Legal

Applications Support Team.

“The indisputable timeliness of this enforcement action comes in the midst of a continuing public health emergency, which is in large part precipitated by the toxic supply of fentanyl that fuels the ongoing opioids crisis,” FSOC Major Projects’ acting Supt. Jillian Wellard said in the release.

“The significant amount of illicit drugs seized, as well as the dismantling of this criminal network and their sophisticated pill-pressing operation has prevented millions of potentially lethal doses of toxic drugs from entering our communities.”

White Rock comedian Ryan Lachance quips that he can’t afford a bad show.

“That’s one thing about being in a wheelchair – as a white, middle-aged guy I might be able to blend into the background, but a white, middle-aged guy in a wheelchair who sucked? They’re going to remember that guy!”

Fortunately that isn’t the case with Lachance, who has managed to build a successful career as a comic, with a finely-honed sense of the ridiculous – even while daily facing the realities of quad-spastic cerebral palsy.

Lachance recently recorded a set at the Vancouver event venue Beaumont Studios, for a new audio-only compilation of comedians presented by major Canadian comedy producer Just For Laughs.

The show, Just For Laughs Vancouver Originals, features some 10 comedians, and will be available on SiriusXM, Spotify, Apple and other streaming platforms that carry Just For Laughs content.

Good things seem to be happening all around for Lachance, who learned that Yuk Yuks is presenting a showcase event for him April 6 at Elements Casino in Cloverdale, a fundraiser for his GoFundMe page, which has been set up to raise the cash for a new van to take him wherever he needs to get.

And, closer to home, the White Rock BIA-presented White Rock Buskers and Comedy Festival (returning May 25-28) has also offered him his own showcase, Ryan Lachance and Friends.

A Surrey church will be filled with voices of Vancouver Orpheus Male Choir during a spring-tour kickoff this Sunday afternoon (April 2).

A thematic “Coast to Coast” concert at Fleetwood’s Northwood United Church is planned ahead of the choir’s two other dates in this region and a tour of the Maritimes later this spring.

The concert is co-sponsored by the “Go-Go Grannies” in support of their aid to under-served communities in sub-Saharan Africa. Partial proceeds go to the “Grannies” to support their work with Ubuntu Ogogo.

The choir is also booked to sing Sunday, April 16 at St. Mark’s Anglican Church in South Surrey and Saturday, May 6 at Kerrisdale Presbyterian Church in Vancouver.

“Starting in B.C., we hop on The Royal Hudson to join King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in celebrating their 1939 cross-Canada tour by rail. We make a quick detour to Vancouver Island to honour iconic Canadian painter Emily Carr (Klee Wyck) before touching down on the coast with the Fisherman’s Son. “Leaving B.C.,” the advisory continues, “Orpheus lands briefly in the Kootenay’s Chasing Visions before heading east. Over the prairies the choir pays tribute to the recently deceased Ian Tyson singing Four Strong Winds. Then, while passing over Toronto, the

choir lets our Ontario cousins know what Maritimers really think of them when they kick back Watching the Apples Grow.

“When Orpheus finally reaches Nova Scotia and PEI, they let loose with a Newfoundland folk song about Sarah and the frustrated tryst with her intended. Surrey-based artist Alex Sandvoss is back with another show, this one focused on feminism, climate change, wealth and power.

The title: “I want to think about feminism, but I have to think about climate change,” which opens Friday, March 31 at Coquitlam’s Place Des Arts, in the Leonore Peyton Salon.

In 2020, her exhibit there took aim at social-media “influencers” and the “toxic” levels of consumption they encourage.

“This show goes for the jugular,” insisted Sandvoss, who has no formal art training and is self-taught. In a family of artists and musicians, she discovered painting while studying for a music degree at McGill University in Montreal, as a release from pressures of school.

She paints in oil using small brushes, with photograph-like results, and challenges the status quo and issues

Ultimately, she hopes her exhibition will spark conversations and inspire people to take action. Something she finds really messed up is how money and status grants people in power a free pass to do whatever they want.

“I feel good about this show,” Sandvoss said. “It’s really a collection of work that is on its own journey. What’s interesting is how the work evolved as I painted. It started out so focused on feminism, but as I continued creating, the work transitioned into questioning roles that wealth and power play. They evolved into pretty intense criticisms of how the world works.”

The curtain has risen again on Surrey Little Theatre, in a different capacity this time.

The rich history of Clayton’s former Surrey Little Theatre (SLT) is now playing at the Museum of Surrey, as a Community Treasures exhibit that showcases the 62year history of the defunct theatre and group.

Ellie Parento, former SLT board member and one of the exhibit committee members, said she was happy to help put the show together.

“It was an honour to work on putting together the material for the exhibit,” said Parento. “It really showed how much work the many volunteers did to keep the theatre running for so long and how incredibly important the support they received from the community and patrons was.”

Parento said the committee ran through a whole range of emotions while prepping the exhibit.

“It was sad to think that the theatre, as it was, had run its time.”

She added the committee was beset with frustration at times as they had little info for some periods of the theatre’s history.

“But (it was) also fascinating to discover some interesting things that none of us had known about the theatre previously.”

She said the biggest thing visitors will take away from the exhibit is both the enormous successes the theatre had achieved and huge challenges the theatre overcame in its 60-plus years.

The exhibition has plenty of items to colour the theatre’s unique history, including props, programs, trophies and photos.

Parento said the endearing old theatre building where the thespian troupe once performed on 184 Street, the former Clayton United Church, was recently sold to a developer and is being rented out as a residence.

“Surrey Little Theatre has a colourful, decades-long history in the cultural landscape of Surrey,” reads an exhibit-introduction banner.

“It was founded in 1958 by Betty Baines as a place for her daughter to learn theatre arts.”

SLT held its initial meetings in the basement of the Dell Hotel. At the time, they called themselves the North Surrey Thespians. Incorporated in 1959, the group officially became Surrey Little Theatre in 1964.

Initial productions were held in halls or schools: Queen Elizabeth High School, Cloverdale Junior High, and Princess Margaret Sr. Secondary were a few of several locations.

In December of 1958, the North Surrey Thespians held their first show, “Wanted: A Housekeeper.”

To finance productions, the fledgling theatre group held rummage sales, hosted fundraising parties and put on cabarets. In 1967, SLT was able to buy Clayton United Church after it closed down.

The group performed its first production there in 1968

(“Dirty Work at the Crossroads”) but were shut down soon after, as the church was old and wasn’t up to building code. Major renovations were done and the petite stage opened again in 1973 with a production of “A Compulsory Option.”

The troupe hosted numerous plays each year, and the success of the 1970s allowed SLT to pay off their mortgage in 1979.

The theatre achieved “festival successes” in the early 2000s, winning several awards. Later in the decade, SLT started a “50-Hour Film Challenge” contest.

Participants had from Friday evening to Sunday night to write, shoot, edit, and enter a five-minute film for a chance to win prizes and get their name on a cool trophy.

As the 2010s wore on, it was clear to all that SLT would need to move to a different venue. The building was just too small, was in need of constant repair, and major development in the area was looming.

Members from SLT approached Langley Players Drama Club in 2020 and the two merged to form Langley Little Theatre in 2021, for shows at Langley Playhouse.

The exhibit runs until May 1 at the Museum of Surrey, 17710 56A Ave. Admission is free.

NCAA final heartbreak for Gardiner, who’ll shoot for 2nd title in 5th season

It wasn’t the medal haul of last year at provincial playoffs, but Surrey Falcons were still a winning organization last weekend.

The female hockey association’s U15 rep team won the B.C. championship banner with a 4-2 victory over Tri-Cities on Sunday (March 26) at McArthur Island Sport and Event Centre in Kamloops.

The Surrey squad was powered by four first-period goals from Emily Preston, Alexa Garden, Haley Waugh and Cameryn Sheils.

In five tournament wins, Sheils led the way with 12 points, followed by Gabriella Lee with nine and Waugh and Finley Elliott with six each.

Goaltenders Claire Lee and Ryan Assaly shared the net and allowed just three goals combined.

Also at BC Hockey-hosted provincials last weekend, the Falcons’ U18 team fell out of medal contention in Williams Lake. Led by Fiona Sirovyak’s five points, the team had one win, two losses and a tie in four games.

It was a great hockey season for Surrey’s Jennifer Gardiner and the powerhouse Ohio State Buckeyes, save for that heartbreaking final game.

With a chance to win back-to-back NCAA women’s hockey championships, the Buckeyes couldn’t score a goal and fell 1-0 to Wisconsin Badgers.

This season Ohio State set a school record for wins (33), and Gardiner led the team with 57 points, third most in the league, but none of those stats mattered at Amsoil Arena in Duluth, Minn., on Sunday (March 19).

“It wasn’t an ending anyone would want to have, but it was a successful season for us and there’s still lots to celebrate,” Gardiner said in a phone call three days after the big game.

“It was the first game of the year where we didn’t score a goal, got shut out. It was bizarre,” added the five-foot-six forward, a Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary graduate and former Greater Vancouver Comets standout.

Gardiner says the loss gives her motivation to win another NCAA title next season, as a fifth-year player.

She’ll graduate as a senior in May, and will continue with sports management studies at the university.

“Because of COVID we have an extra year of eligibility, so I’ll come back here in the fall,” Gardiner explained.

“Right after the (championship) game, there were a lot of emotions but I was already thinking about what we need to work on, how can we win the national championship next season, how we get back here.

“It is heartbreaking, especially knowing the feeling of winning and how we did it last year, as the first OSU team to win it all.

And this year, we worked so hard for eight months to get back there and were ranked number one every week for most of the season. It’s so disappointing.”

This year, as a veteran on the team, she finished sixth in the league with 21 goals, three behind teammate Sophie Jacques, a defender.

Both were in the running for the USA Hockey Foundation’s Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, given annually to the top player in NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey, and Jacques won it.

Gardiner admits to struggling with confidence in her early days at Ohio State, but definitely not during the season just ended, when she had 18 multi-point games, led the team with a plus-36 and was a second-team All-American.

“By the time you’re a senior you just know how things work and have a different level of confidence, you’re familiar with teammates and leadership roles, that kind of stuff,” Gardiner said.

“Believing in myself was a factor this year, and also the addition of assistant coach Peter Elander, who brought so much

knowledge to our team and helped me work on some things, and (head coach) Nadine Muzerall, she’s amazing.”

With added experience and hockey IQ, Gardiner aims to return to train and play with Canada’s national women’s team this summer, following a spring trip to Europe with a few of her fellow Buckeyes.

“I personally can’t imagine a life without hockey so I’ll be playing it as long as I can, with a goal of making the Olympic team,” Gardiner emphasized.

“I’ll definitely go wherever pro hockey takes me, depending what the professional leagues look like after next year,” she added.

“The PWHPA (Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association) is going to transform a little bit and hopefully have better salaries similar to the PHF (Premier Hockey Federation). I won’t be back home (in Surrey) playing hockey, but I likely won’t be here in Columbus either, because there’s no pro hockey here, so eventually maybe Toronto or Montreal, that kind of thing.”

“It was a helluva run, but South Delta (U18 A1) is a quality hockey club,” said Jon Silcox, head coach of Cloverdale’s U18 A2 team. “We knew it was a David and Goliath story, but unfortunately we didn’t get a Cinderella ending.”

Surrey’s annual All-Star Classic high school basketball games will be played with heavy hearts Friday night (March 31) at the Enver Creek Secondary gym.

A longtime backer of basketball in Surrey, Kevin De Boice was a co-founder and guiding light of the annual Surrey RCMP Classic tournament for boys teams. He died March 18 after a battle with cancer.

Superintendent/ CEO Mark Pearmain described De Boice as “a valuable and longtime member of our Surrey School District family” who began his teaching career there in 1985. Over the years he worked at many schools in the district, and served as principal at Elgin Park, Panorama Ridge and Tamanawis, where he worked until his death.

“Kevin was a strong advocate for staff and students, and he was a huge supporter of community events, extracurricular activities, fine arts and athletics,” Pearmain wrote in a memo to district staff.

“He had been on medical leave in recent months, but even during this time, he continued to attend and support district and school events,” including the RCMP tournament and also the provincial wrestling meet where Tamanawis won a fourth consecutive B.C. championship.

De Boice and Rick Inrig were co-directors of the RCMP Classic for 32 years, since the tournament’s launch in the fall of 1991. The two first met on the court in mid-1970s, when De Boice was playing in Kelowna and Inrig coached in Vernon.

“Friday will be a difficult night, but we’ll get through it,” Inrig said Monday (March 27). “It’s not something we want to be doing right now. The games will be played.”

In January at Enver Creek, De Boice and Inrig were given special “police boot” trophies at the RCMP Classic’s kickoff banquet, attended by hundreds of Surrey players, coaches, tournament officials and other

guests.

Friday’s All-Star Classic will see “last hurrah” games for high school girls (6 p.m.) and boys (7:30) at the gym on 84 Avenue, with scholarships announced for deserving student-athletes.

The BCHL playoff games will come fast and furious for Surrey Eagles and Powell River Kings during their firstround series, which gets going Friday (March 31) at South Surrey Arena and continues there the following night.

The Coastal Conference foes split their season series two games apiece in favour of the home teams, including a 6-2 Eagles win over the Kings last Friday (March 24).

The Eagles finished second in the conference with 73 points, 25 ahead of the Kings in the nineteam conference.

Surrey head coach Cam Keith expects a competitive seven-game series that could go the distance, given the tight schedule of games (four games in five nights to start) and ferry travel to and from the Sunshine Coast.

“They’re a team that started slow this season and really improved as they year went along, so their record isn’t a full indicator of their strength as a team right now,” Keith said of the Kings.

“We struggled against Powell River on the road there (at Hap Parker Arena), losing two in December, so we know these first two home games are very important for us. It’s going to be a fun series, one I expect to be a long one.”

With Pulver and his MVP-level stats out of the lineup, the Eagles will rely on first-year netminder Michael Sochan the rest of the way.

Last Friday against Kings, Sochan earned Fortis Energy Player of the Game honours for stopping 22 of 24 shots.

Sunday, in a 7-4 win over Cowichan Capitals, Sochan was given the game off in favour of Ben Montgomery and Jaiden Sharma, who shared the minutes. Sharma stopped all 24 shots he faced.

“Montgomery and Sharma will be there if we need them but Sochan is our guy, and we’re going to live and die with him in the playoffs,” Keith said. “He’s done well this year and had some highs and lows in his first year in the league, but has really found his game of late. I think he’s feeling comfortable going

into this playoff series.

“We’re healthy, knock on wood,” the coach added. “We have all of our skaters available heading in, and we’re happy with that starting point.”

The Eagles finished the regular season with 350 penalty minutes, lowest in the league by quite a margin, and allowed the third fewest goals. Heading north, Surrey scored 200 goals in 54 games, fourth best in the BCHL. “We have a pretty good penalty kill but in playoffs your special teams become so important,” Keith said. “We will have to elevate our physicality, and we are one of the smaller teams in the league.

We’re built for the Olympic ice – our strength this season has been playing at home, where we’re very comfortable on the big ice. We’re not big and heavy and built for that grinding game, but we’re going to have to find a little bit of that if we’re going to

be successful in the playoffs.”

Last week the Eagles announced their annual player awards, with Pulver and forward Jake Bongo sharing the Kris Wilson Team MVP award. Captain Brody Gagno won the Athletic Courage and John Short Leadership awards, Tate Taylor earned Devon Teows Top Defensive Man honours, Ryden Evers was named Most Sportsmanlike and Jacob Bonkowski was given the Paul Macmillan Top Forward award.

Other awards went to Ty Brassington (Chuck Westgard Community Service), Ewan Rennie (Fan Favourite), Ante Zlomislic (Unsung Hero), Aaron Schwartz (Scott Gomez Rookie of the Year), Ross Roloson (Matt Earhart Top Academic Athlete) and Cole Galata (Jeff Nabseth Heart & Soul), while Savek Brar and Rylan Bonkowski shared the Mark Holick Most Improved Award.
