The city continues to work with geotechnical engineers to further investigate the slide, and the State of Local Emergency (SOLE) remains in place while the investigation is underway. Under BC’s Emergency Program Act, a declared SOLE gives the city the authority to cause the evacuation of persons from the area and enter the impacted area.

“Thank you to the residents of the affected buildings for their patience and cooperation as the city completed the necessary work to ensure it was safe to return to the site. We are extremely glad that residents were able to return to their homes over the weekend,” says Drew Hadfield, Director of Operations. “I’d also like to thank the supporting agencies, staff and volunteers for their incredible efforts to make the return happen as efficiently

Meanwhile, Slade, who suffers from health issues, lives in fear of the hillside because it could ultimately force him and others into homelessness. If the hill comes down again, residents in the area may have to find new housing. Right now, Slade lives in a barely affordable rental

unit that he’s been in for a number of years. Other units in the building rent for over double what he is paying.

He feels he couldn’t afford to rent anywhere else on his small WCB pension.

“The stress of my current health combined with COVID and now having to live with constant fear of a large landslide with no means of finding an affordable place to live elsewhere is wearing me thin,” he said.

Federal NDP leader visits Campbell River to discuss affordability, housing and food security MARC KITTERINGHAM Campbell River Mirror

Clients of the Campbell River Food Bank were served by a special guest on Monday, as food bank volunteers put federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh to work stocking food bags.

Singh was in Campbell River as part of a visit to the North Island-Powell River riding. The goal of the trip was to learn from local non-profit and social services just what difficulties people in smaller centres, rural and remote areas are facing in relation to the housing, food security and affordability crises.

Singh met with Stefanie Hendrickson of the Campbell River and District Coalition to End Homelessness, Michaela Arruda of the Campbell River Community Foundation, Ian Baikie from Hama?Elas Community Kitchen, Tanille Johnston from the City of Campbell

River and Jo Watson from the Campbell River Food Bank. North Island-Powell River MP Rachel Blaney was also part of the discussion.

The roundtable focused on the areas of concern for these groups, particularly with the goal of bringing these stories to Ottawa to help advocate for smaller communities.

“How things are done in Ottawa doesn’t always reflect how they’re done in our communities,” Blaney said.

The discussion included access to funding for non-profits, a feeling of disconnect between realities on the ground in these communities and how the federal government sees the situation — definitions of “affordability” was a main topic of discussion — and the fact that smaller communities do not have the same resources as bigger centres.

Hendrickson identified gaps in the funding provided by the Canada Mortgage

Singh also visited Comox and Courtenay on Monday, touring the Canadian Forces Base with Blaney, meeting Comox mayor Nicole Minions and later with MP Gord Johns in Courtenay.

Building the best birthday ever MARC KITTERINGHAM Campbell River Mirror

A Campbell River construction crew made sure a local youngster’s birthday was one to remember this year.

To celebrate her son Phil’s third birthday, Nicole Hillier reached out on Facebook to any local construction crews who would be willing to sing him happy birthday.

“He loves construction and all things mechanical,” Hillier said.

The family has a habit of going riding around either by car or bike to where ever there’s work being done so Phil can take a look.

“Why not ask?” Hillier thought.

The crew in question from Akers Property Solutions was working on a site on Evergreen Road.

Hillier said the crew member who responded to her post, Ryan Clark, had kids of his own and understood how much it would mean for Phil.

The Hillier family met the crew on site on Wednesday afternoon.

The crew came out to meet Phil and give him a high five. They then showed off an excavator, and even let Phil and his dad Chris sit inside and check out all the buttons.

The announcement was made on social media to retire the lovable Lab. The Jan. 18 post on Facebook announcing Pickle’s retirement has reached nearly 300 reactions, with most being positive.

“I’m kind of blown away at the response about Pickle retiring,” said Fairbank. “I think he’s got quite a few fans out there!”

Can we create more jobs while cutting fewer trees?

It was meant to be a moment to bid a fond farewell, a cherished adieu but, in the end, the old Queen ignominiously hobbled her way into retirement having died, unable to complete her last voyage.

As the Powell River Queen limped into Quathiaski Cove ferry terminal on Quadra Island Jan. 17, a retirement celebration was already underway for the 58-year-old car ferry. Cake had been served, coffee cups were being filled and community members had dropped by to say their goodbyes to the faithful old vessel.

The plan was for the Powell River Queen to pull into the “Q Cove” terminal on its regular 3:30 p.m. trip from Campbell River. Then after two more back-and-forth sailings to and from the

Campbell River terminal the old vessel was to be motored off to Buckley Bay to await a final move into the hands of whoever bought the surplus old gal and whatever was planned for its final years.

But after a while, the 4 p.m. trip – a dangerous cargo sailing not open to the public – still hadn’t left Q Cove and drivers hoping to catch the 5 p.m. sailing started lining up.

Eventually, ferry customers were told about a mechanical issue with the Powell River Queen and

that ferry service had been interrupted and wouldn’t be restored until initially, 8 p.m. but that was revised to 7 p.m. later.

Meanwhile, BC Ferries quickly pressed into service the Island K’ulut’a, one of the two Island Class hybrid vessels BC Ferries had commissioned to replace the Powell River Queen.

The K’ulut’a was to be joined by her sister ship, the Island Nagalis and both were on hand awaiting the launch of their careers.

Powell River Queen limps into retirement A LIMB

At some point, we have to cut down some trees.

The forest industry in B.C. supplies building materials for homes and businesses, furniture, and the fast-growing mass timber construction industry, not to mention pulp for paper.

The good thing about trees is that they grow back. Unlike oil or coal or metals dug up out of the ground, we can ensure a fresh supply of timber pretty much in perpetuity, if we manage our forests in the right way.

Unfortunately, we haven’t always done that, and now we’re faced with an ecosystem that’s under stress, with too few stands of old growth left, and an industry that is used to having access to more wood than is actually sustainable.

Premier David Eby warned recently of “exhausted forests,” but he could have spoken of an exhausted forest industry just as well.

There are still people in many communities in B.C. making a living from forestry, but it’s a far cry from what it once was.

Many workers have been eliminated by automation and technology, while few new jobs have been created in processing timber, as raw log exports continue to reign supreme in this province.

Eby’s most recent announcement this week aims to change that. A new $90 million fund over the next three years is meant to inject money into industrial and manufacturing projects.

There are plenty of places for B.C. wood, big and small.

With Canada and other jurisdictions phasing out single-use plastics, paper and wood are set to make a comeback in everything from takeout containers to disposable cutlery.

On the exact opposite end of the scale, technology now allows wood to act as a building material that can compete with steel and concrete.

The government of B.C. has been encouraging mass timber construction, using vast manufactured wood beams.

The goal for forestry in B.C. has to be to cut fewer trees, while turning what we do cut into useful products that we can export across Canada and the world. It’s been a dream of multiple B.C. governments, and no one has managed to make it work. But if we want to have good jobs in the forest sector, as well as healthy forests that will last for hundreds and thousands of years yet to come, we’re going to have to work to get that balance right.

Both vessels took over the route, as planned, the next day, providing two-ship service with 11 more round trips and reducing weather-related cancellations, wait times and congestion on local roads as well as providing more dependable operation. The replacement vessels are an improvement in service residents of Quadra and Cortes islands have been demanding for years.

The Powell River Queen’s final day provided the kind of randomly-occurring delay island residents have learned to live with. It’s a tenet of island life that you just have to accept ferry delays – part of that quintessential laissez-faire attitude bucolic island life engenders.

Continued from A10 BC Ferries spokesperson Deborah Marshall said it was a coupling failure that resulted in suspension of the Powell River Queen’s service.

Normally, the vessel can operate on three of its four engines in favourable conditions but on Tuesday afternoon the winds were quite high so for safety reasons BC Ferries had to suspend operation with that ship.

“We certainly apologize to our customers for any inconvenience this situation may have caused,” she said.

“The new two-ship operation started yesterday (Jan. 18) and we are pleased to provide our customers with greater capacity and more frequent service.”

Meanwhile, the old Queen limped into retirement with her reputation a little tarnished but undiminished after a long career on B.C. waters. And besides, the love and affection demonstrated by the community and her past crew members at her farewell party will sustain her in her retirement years and easily eclipse her hapless final day.

BC Hydro’s operational and climate change resiliency

By Stephen Watson, This past fall was the driest fall season on record for the Campbell River system. Then the tap abruptly turned on in full force for one of the wettest starts to the winter season.

With big weather fluctuations and ongoing climate change we often get questions about how or what BC Hydro is doing to prepare.

We’ve been thinking and acting on it for years. I would like to cover off some of those actions related to our Campbell River hydroelectric operations and water storage. This includes modelling, capital projects, in the moment versatility and the benefits of an integrated power system.

For modelling, our records go back about 60 years and we have daily traces for each of those years on how much water entered the watershed.

Every year we learn about another weather scenario of very dry or very wet. In all of our years of record for the fall season, there has always been a shift to wet weather by around the end of October. We didn’t get any large rain events over

We are always looking at the near-term and long-term weather forecasts, current snowpack conditions, hydrologic forecasts, and are conservative in our decisions for environmental and social considerations while generating clean power. Upon reflection, we managed through this past fall as well as possible. Salmon were able to spawn and we tried to keep those salmon eggs covered with water.

Since 2007, we’ve been partnering with the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium and others on modelling climate change projections of what the future may look like for rain, snowpack and dry weather across B.C. The results from those ongoing models for our Campbell

River watershed show a trend towards wetter and milder conditions in the fall and winter, and drier spring and summers. The annual precipitation looks to be the same, just dispersed differently.

For our capital projects, we are preparing to undertake major upgrades to the Strathcona, Ladore and John Hart dams. These projects rightly get a lot of attention for maintaining downstream public safety. While the projects are mainly focused on seismic upgrades, a significant component will be improvements to the water discharge reliability and water management flexibility of these dams that were built in the 1940s and 1950s.

For reliability, all the spillway gates at the three dams are planned to be replaced, including new hoist systems and back-up power supply.

No matter how dry or wet the conditions may be, they will be dependable – even after a major earthquake.

For flexibility, the best example is the Strathcona Dam Water Discharge Upgrade Project where we are

planning to build a channel in rock that will curve around the right bank of the dam with a low-level outlet gate used to control water discharge.

While the channel is mainly designed to allow for reservoir water level lowering after a seismic event, there is another benefit in years of very low water like this past fall. The Upper Campbell Reservoir/Buttle Lake water level moved well below the sill of the existing spillway gates. When that happens the only way to pass water downstream is through the powerhouse.

This past fall we had one of those two generators go off-line. It made providing downstream flows tenuous.

With the proposed channel, we will have security in being able to provide downstream water flows no matter what the reservoir level is or how the powerhouse is performing. You can learn more about the project at majorprojects.ca.

For in-the-moment versatility, sometimes the best planning and capital improvements may not be able to accommodate a certain

weather event. This year at the Upper Quinsam Lake, the record dry weather led to very low water storage conditions and the risk of running out of water. We quickly responded, voluntarily, to temporarily install pumps to help supplement water flows to benefit downstream fish habitat. This quick action is an example of being agile to very challenging weather situations.

For our integrated power system, while we did have low water conditions and power generation this fall in Campbell River, we are connected to the wider BC Hydro system and could supply our customers with electricity from off Vancouver Island. Since late December, the wet weather has recovered the water storage within the system and we are now at normal water storage levels and river flows. We will be ready for whatever nature provides us in 2023, and continue to prepare and plan for our hydroelectric facilities to meet future weather events.

A Look Back INTO

THE HISTORY OF THE CAMPBELL RIVER AREA The wreck of the steamer Cottage City

Y

ou never know what artifacts might be found along the shores of the Discovery Passage and the stories that go along with them.

It was over 100 years ago on Jan. 26, 1911 at approximately 3:10 in the afternoon when a blinding snowstorm, treacherous current and heavy fog caused the steamship Cottage City to be shipwrecked about 200 yards offshore on the Willow Point Reef.

The 232-foot-long wooden-hulled steamer was first launched in 1890 and served the Maine Steamship Line for seven years, carrying passengers along the U.S. east coast.

After that it was sold to the Pacific Coast Steamship Co. for service between Seattle and Alaska, carrying cargo and people eager to strike it rich in the gold rush in Alaska.

On the ill-fated voyage, she left Seattle for Alaska at 10:35 p.m. on a Wednesday night with 100 tons of freight, 59 crew, and 37 passengers, including six members of a vaudeville troupe bringing costumes, musical instruments, and equipment to entertain the legions of people eager to find their fortunes.

the Cape Mudge lighthouse and landed on the shores of Quadra Island. The lighthouse keeper at the time, a Scotsman named John Davidson, had done everything he could pumping his hand foghorn during the snowstorm, but the storm had altered the echo to make it difficult to gauge its position.

He guided the life raft to the beach with a white flag and offered a hot meal and lodging to the passengers. The other life rafts followed the shore and continued up to Campbell River with the ship’s papers and money. All the passengers and crew survived.

Most of the baggage on board was left behind, and Captain Jensen and officers remained with the ship to guard against looting and to meet any help that may arrive.

Plans were made to salvage the Cottage City, however, a more severe storm hit the coast on Feb. 3, making salvage efforts impossible and tore apart much of the ship. For the weeks that followed, heavy winds battered the exposed ship.

On Feb. 9, a radio message reported that masses of floating wreckage believed to be from the Cottage City were being carried away by the tide and found as far north as Chatham Point, 40 km away.

Captain Jensen and his officers finally abandoned her, and the remains were sold for scrap.

She was written off as a complete loss at a book value of $115,000 as listed in the Railway and Marine News of 1911.

In 1967, two divers by the names of Fred Rogers and Ed Seaton set out to find what was left of the Cottage City wreckage. They were successful in finding the exact location and a small collection of artifacts such as ornamental brass door handles, hinges, portholes, and lamp holders. The boilers, propeller and the main steam engines were nowhere to be found suggesting they had been hauled away in the salvage efforts.

Strathcona Symphony Orchestra ‘Going for Baroque’ The Strathcona Symphony Orchestra (SSO) is “Going for Baroque,” and will feature some of the most popular composers of the period, including works by G. F. Handel, Vivaldi, and J. S. Bach.

Audiences love the timeless and universal sound of the genre, characterized by ornate melodies, complex harmonies, elaborate ornamentation, and elegant nuances written by European musical masters from the early 1600s to the mid-1700s.

In addition to performing at Courtenay’s St. George’s United Church in March, the orchestra is playing in Campbell River at the Trinity Presbyterian Church.

The Strathcona Syphony will be perforing in concerts on March 11, at 7 p.m. at St. George’s United Church, in Courtenay, and March 12, at 3 p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Campbell River.

Ms. Jung. “He showcases the violin, flute, oboe, and trumpet in several solos throughout the piece, demonstrating his expressive range and versatility.”

Solo passages throughout the program will feature SSO section leads, showcasing their musical prowess and dexterity. The orchestra members are looking forward to sharing their passion

for the musical style with concertgoers.

Members from the SSO brass section will start the show with a flourish, playing George Handel’s “Music for the Royal Fireworks” fanfare. The symphony will keep the momentum going until the grand finale of the “Brandenburg Concerto No. 2.” The SSO’s Opera Night, held just before Christmas,

Audition call for Rivercity Players’ festival entry, Four Old Broads Rivercity Players, Campbell River’s community theatre group, is holding auditions for their spring production of Four Old Broads by Leslie Kimbell.

The play is Rivercity’s entry into the annual North Island Zone Festival, which the organization is hosting this May. The comedy is set in Magnolia Place Assisted Living, where retired burlesque queen Beatrice Shelton desperately needs a vacation – and NOT another trip up to Helen, Georgia to see that “precious little German village for the umpteenth time.”

Try your hand at shore angling in the month of January We had the snow in December and already a fair amount of rain has fallen locally in January.

Few anglers are fishing freshwater lakes like Echo, Fry and McCreight. Road conditions will vary in each area and getting to upper regions will depend on the amount of snow on the roads. If you see iced-over areas on a lake, don’t take the chance to walk on it if you really don’t know the ice thickness.

With the milder weather and the rain, you can easily find a shore area, park and cast out to the open water.

Stocked freshwater lakes around Campbell River will have a good number of catchable-size trout which can be caught from shore using white or pink power bait. A hook with a worm is a good way to

get a catch of trout if you are willing to wait it out and enjoy a few hours of fishing.

Last week I had a visit to the local tackle shops in Campbell River and staff members have mentioned new people moving here are starting to enquire about fishing lakes locally. It will be another month before things start to get busier for people purchasing gear and planning their next fishing experience around Campbell River.

How do you feed a world cup-level sports team?

Campbell River chef Jade Berg thought when he answered a call from the Canadian Luge Team to be their chef, that it would just be another job.

However, it turned out to be a lot more than that.

“I looked at the schedule and thought … I’ve never been to Europe. It’d be cool to go and check out the markets over there. So yeah, I jumped on board,” Berg said. “It was just kind of a gig at first … This was the first gig that I was sad to leave.”

Berg is a private chef who typically does private cooking, classes and events. His specialty is in foraged and other wild-sourced foods.

However, Berg’s job with the luge team was to change the way they looked at nutrition.

At an elite level, what an athlete eats is almost as important as how they train.

The food they’re putting in their bodies is the fuel needed to perform at a high level.

That’s where Berg comes in.

His role was to ensure that the food these athletes were consuming was actually beneficial to them. The best way to do that is through consistency.

“It’s much more physical than I would have thought they’re burning around 400 calories to 540, 550 calories per hour-long sliding session,” he said.

“In these foreign countries where the food is maybe not familiar … So a lot of the times these athletes don’t have the time to get the proper nutrition … A lot of these athletes drop weight, which in any other sport would be good.

“But for this like they need to keep their weight levels to a certain point. Weight is how they gain speed down the hill.

“Losing weight while on tour was a really big detriment to the organization prior to me coming on board.”

He said that once per week he’d host the whole team for a family-style meal with food he’d bought specifically for the occasion. That gave the team a different dynamic as well, instead of spending

“We really tried to make it fun as well. If eating isn’t fun and food isn’t tasty it makes it a lot harder to force yourself to eat,” he said.

“Once a week we would do a nice plated dinner and I would get a chance to … flex my culinary muscle a little bit … they’d have a chance to experience a whole differ-

ent side of food that they’ve ever had on the road.

“The (team’s) relationship with food has changed a lot,” he said. “Mealtime was something that would look forward to. It wasn’t something like ‘oh gosh, we’re gonna go down to the buffet and wonder what kind of meat they’re gonna be serving today.’”

This opportunity was a pilot project, and Berg said that other teams have expressed interest in doing

Athletic organizations operate on a limited budget, and Berg said that by bringing on a team chef, they’re able save money on food costs.

“They’re operating on these shoestring budgets,” he said.

“Food is so expensive…

That was a huge cost in the past; even eating out. We’re talking about ways to connect with Canadian suppliers or food producers and how

can we get these athletes some food during the off season.

“To be able to try and take a little bit of weight off their shoulders will be good.”

Though it was just a pilot project, Berg said it was successful enough for the athletes to have already seen a difference.

Berg was with the team for three stops on the world cup circuit, which he said gave them a chance to compare what it was like with him to

what it was like without him.

“They can do the first three stops of the World Cup tour with a chef and then the last two without and it gives them a little bit of contrast,” he said. “I’m already getting messages. The one athlete messaged me last night (saying) that ‘we really miss you.’

I said, ‘oh, yeah. How’s the food?’ They’re we’re unsure.

The meat that they’re serving is questionable.”

There are already plans to bring him on next year for the entire season. Though Berg himself won’t be able to feed multiple teams at once, he hopes the idea spreads and other Canadian chefs and food producers get hooked up with athletes.

Before this season, Berg was as big of a luge fan as anybody else.

Mainly he cheered for the Canadian team during the Olympics, but other years he didn’t think much of the sport.

Now, though, he’s a fan.

Berg has even gotten his family involved.

Another bonus for Berg was the ability to shop and cook in foreign markets.

Picture an Anthony Bourdain-esque venture through the food markets of Riga, Latvia and it’ll be pretty close.

“I went into Riga, the capital of Latvia one day to go walk through the Old Market there. The Central Markets in Riga are just phenomenal,” he said. “We look at food in very different ways here in North America.

“Everything is packaged and individual muscle cuts are grouped and wrapped up. There there’s like a whole pig’s head that’s sawed in half. The salmon are all hanging and there’s ducks dry-aging. It was really a cool experience.”

Normally, Berg’s gigs are one-offs. He goes and cooks for a client, has a good time and then goes home.

This time, he really feels like he was part of the team.

“They went out of their way to go buy me a nice little token of their appreciation and they all signed a bib,” he said.

“We were at the airport all hugging each other and leaving. We all had tears where… yeah, I’ve never had that with any client I’ve cooked for.”

Hilda Catherine Shilliday (Pletsch), age 93, passed away in Campbell River on January 14, 2023, after a short illness and a long life well-lived.

Hilda’s life was guided by her faith, her love of family and friends, her service to others, and a strong sense of humour and adventure!

She was predeceased by her adoring husband of fifty years, Reverend Canon Errol Shilliday, her eldest son Bryn and his infant son Marshall, her parents Herb and Annie, and her 11 siblings. She is survived and will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Mary Catherine (Joedy), son Erin (Maura), grandchildren Andria, Brenna (Bradley), Hannah (Ellis), Georgia (Eric), Henry, Rebecca and Ryan, and greatgrandchildren Tristan, Jonah, Jordyn, Shayla Bryn, Ezra, and Freya. Hilda also has many close family members whom she remained connected to including her nieces, nephews, and their families, and her dear friends here and in Uganda. Hilda’s family is profoundly grateful to the staff and residents at Berwick, who made the last seven years of her life so joyful and comfortable. She often said it was the most

wonderful place to be! She always enjoyed visits with her dear friends and family from near and far! Her Church Family at St. Peters, especially the ACW, were so caring and provided much enjoyment to her, as did the amazing Grandmother to Grandmothers whose work she greatly admired.

Thank you to Dr. Penhall for his care, and especially to the paramedics and ER team at Campbell River Hospital for their kindness and care. Nurse Camille’s kindness, professional care, and support for Hilda and her family will never be forgotten.

A Celebration of Hilda’s life will be held in February at St. Peters Anglican Church, Campbell River with an interment later that weekend at St. Stephens Anglican Church, Saanich. She will also be missed by numerous family members and friends.

Lady Violet loved her English country garden and knew all the birds by name. She enjoyed walking the Saratoga neighbourhood chatting with friends and tourists. She had many health issues over the last 28 years and faced each one with optimism and courage.

We thank all her family and friends for their visits, phone calls and support. They helped her surpass the few years she had been expected to live. With this extra time, she was able to attend graduations, weddings and meet her great-grandchildren. She spent almost 10 months in the Campbell River Hospital and the last 6 months at the Discovery Harbour Seniors Community.

A special thank you to Dr. Penhall and Dr. Veerappan for their care. We would like to thank the amazing staff at the hospital on the 3rd floor.

As well as the staff of Denman and Hornby at Discovery Harbour. We would like to say they all loved her as much as we did. A special thank you to Caroline Sloat for her continuous love and support for Violet and the family.

Please remember Violet when the Robin’s chirp in the spring, while you sip gin and tonic on a warm summer’s day, have a glass of red wine in the fall or have a smash of brandy in the winter. We will treasure her always.

To our Matriarch, Granny, Grans, GG, we will continue to spread laughter and love to all. We will continue to gather at our famous August Long to tell stories and create more memories. We hope you are dancing the polka with Earl and planting snow drops with Donna. We will miss you so, so much.

With my dogs, Holly, Oscar, and my last Tika, we met so many friends on Saratoga Beach and surrounding trails in Black Creek on our walks. We always found stories to share or treats. I thank Glenn and Barb at Pacific Playgrounds Ocean Side Resort for taking care of Tika.

For several years I worked at the Elk Falls Pulp Mill in Campbell River. Then when it decided to close, like others, I went to work at other places. We all have so many stories to share.

Life is too short to worry about what others say or think about me.

Mom was diagnosed with leukemia back in March 2022.

Predeceased by her husband Ed Swift (1999) and her 3 sisters Betty, Margaret, and Ivy. Survived by her 3 children Stephen (Kathy), Lorraine (Alan) & Mark (Karrie) as well as Ed’s children Tom (Kathy), Mary (Greg), Debbie, and Jacquie (Paul) including 13 grandchildren.

Dorothy was born on October 10th, 1943 to George and Margaret Barton in Warrington, Cheshire, England, the youngest of 5 children.

She emigrated to Canada in 1966 at 23 years of age. She worked for more than 25 years as a geriatric nurse in New Westminster.

In 1986 mom married the true love of her life, Ed Swift. They retired and moved to Campbell River in 1988 and loved the friends they met and the outdoor lifestyle they had. They loved long walks through the forests and beaches around them, fishing and hunting.

When Ed passed in 1999, mom got involved with community-minded volunteer work through her church and with the legion. She worked with amazing people as they set up the soup kitchen on weekends and worked with the ladies’ auxiliary at the legion. It kept her busy until her diagnosis.

On January 3rd at 11:02 p.m., mom passed away peacefully with grace and poise with Lorraine and Mark by her side. Whatever you believe, we know that Mom is with Ed and all those who

Paula Douglas peacefully passed surrounded by her loved ones on January 13th, 2023, at the age of 72. Paula was a well-respected elementary teacher in SD72 Campbell River for the majority of her long career, touching many lives with her deep caring and never-ending energy.

Her organizational skills were legendary, and she continued to share this gift long after retirement by volunteering with the Comox Valley Therapeutic Society and the Royal LePage Christmas Hamper Program.

Paula was generous and giving to all who were dear to her, making sure everyone was taken care of. The light of her life was her four-year-old grandson, Luca, who she spent hours reading to in Montreal over video chat or curled up with a stack of books during visits. She treasured each moment she spent with him.

Paula is survived by her loving companion of more than 10 years, Pat; her daughter, Erin (GilPhilippe); her grandson, Luca; her sisters, Beverley and Vivien; and many aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

In loving memory of Nancy Jean Holloway February 9, 1965 - January 16, 2023 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Nancy Jean Holloway of Campbell River, B.C. She was 57 years old and lost her battle with COPD. Nancy was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and moved to Vancouver Island when she was 12 years old.

She was born to parents Diane and Frank Holloway. She was always a big personality in a little package and kept her sense of humor until the end.

She is survived by her mother, Diane Holloway, sons Mike Jones, Ryan Jones, James Jones and grandchildren.

Sisters Caroline Hubelit (John Hubelit), Trish Woods (Stu Woods), and Margaret Holloway, brothers, Dan Levac and Brian Clayton.

There will not be a formal service for Nancy but a small celebration of life at some point in the spring.

We’d like to thank the staff at Campbell River Hospital and Dr. Debruin for her wonderful care.

Rest in Peace now Nancy.

We will miss you dearly.

Russell was born in Victoria to George and Kate Atkins. He was predeceased by his parents and his sisters Irene and Audrey. Russell is survived and greatly missed by his daughter Kirsten Billings, his grandchildren Claire (Errol) Schwake and Walker Billings, his intended ex-wife Jackie Atkins, his ‘always’ son-in-law Jamie Billings, his sister Bernice Phelps, as well as nieces and nephews.

Russell would’ve liked to have had 6 of the Vancouver Canucks to be his pallbearers so they could have let him down one more time.

Whether that’s the person helping bring cultural awareness and inspiration to the next generation of Kwakwaka’wakw youth, the person who travelled to Canada as a refugee and now gives back to her community as an anti-racism campaigner, or the person making a name for himself with roles as varied as Kristoff from Frozen and Sylvia St. Croix from Ruthless! in the theatre world, Campbell River is home to such a varied and diverse group of people that it’s hard to know where to start.

The thing about most of these people is that they often don’t want to talk about the things they’ve done. To them, it’s just their life. They do this day after day, thinking nothing of it because that’s the kind of people they are. They’re humble, not doing this for attention and just trying to make their world a better place.

In fact, that’s exactly why we wanted to talk to them. Without these people, our community would not be the exciting, interesting and diverse place it is. These are the people that give our community character, that bring about the kind of change that benefits all of us, that explore and showcase the wonderful natural world that is all around us, that delve deep into the culture of this part of the world that goes back for thousands of years, that ask the tough questions and ask us to learn from the past and make a better future for all, and who show us who we really are.

By themselves, these people are a few interesting folks who happen to live and work in Campbell River.

Together, they’re so much more than that. They offer a glimpse into what makes Campbell River a community.
