Veteran preserving stories of navy women A local Victoria veteran turned naval historian has spent more than a decade doing just that, ensuring the story of one particular arm of the navy is preserved, lest we forget.

Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRCNS nicknamed ‘Wrens’) was established on July 31, 1942 amid the chaos and destruction of the Second World War. It was the navy branch of the women’s service, with separate organizations established for the army and Bailey Moreton the air force, which had preceded it in 1941.

service member, coming from a navy family where his dad, uncle, cousins and other relatives also served in the armed forces. Freeman served with a number of former Wrens during his time in the navy, and during his time kept notes about and from people he met during his service.

In later years he handed those off to Mary Grant, who was working on compiling records about the Wrens into a collected history. Grant died 11-and-a-half years ago and Freeman was asked if he would continue her work.

“Someone approached me with the project and said, ‘Oh it’ll just take you three weeks.’

Now it’s been 11-and-a-half years.”

Wastewater plant woes flow through the nose of neighbours Those living nearby say CRD hasn’t kept its promise of an odour-free McLoughlin treatment facility Jake Romphf News Staff

With her windows cracked to let the summer night air in, Carole Witter is suddenly hit with an intense cloud of stink as she lies in bed. The gag-inducing odours come and go with the winds, but there have been countless times when Witter has abandoned her outdoor leisure for refuge from the foul smells.

After Greater Victoria’s long-awaited wastewater plant started up almost two years ago, she’s just one of the residents from Vic West and Esquimalt’s West Bay neighbourhood who feel a main promise of the project has so far been broken.

When the Capital Regional District approved the almost $775-million McLoughlin Point Wastewater Treatment Plant, it came with a written agreement that neighbours wouldn’t be subject to unacceptable amounts of odour. That odour has residents and stakeholders questioning if contractual requirements have been met with a final deadline looming.

For its part, the CRD is still studying whether all the smells are actually coming from the treatment plant, which can process 108 megalitres of wastewater per day that come from nine core communities. But several nearby residents who spoke with Black Press Media said they don’t need studies to know their downtime has all too often been ruined by a new stink that’s surfaced after the plant started up.

Witter has lived near West Bay marina for 36 years and represents the neighbourhood on the plant’s liaison committee. She said the new odour is real and she’s “100 per cent” sure it emerged after the plant went online in December 2020.

“There are other smells in West Bay, there’s the seaweed down in West Bay that everyone knows about, it’s not that, it is coming from the sewage treatment plant.”

That was spurred by a motion by Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins that was passed at a CRD board meeting in October.

Not a day goes by where the township doesn’t hear about the smells, she said.

“I want to remind you, odour control was one of the most important things for our community and for Vic West,” Desjardins said at the Oct. 12 core area liquid waste management committee meeting. “And we have not resolved those odour issues.”

The committee was discussing how a two-year performance period is set to close in mid-January, at which time final payments will be made to Harbour Resources Ltd. – a consortium comprised of Aecom Canada and Graham Infrastructure, contracted to construct the treatment plant. Graham Infrastructure directed Black Press Media to a statement provided by the CRD and Aecom Canada did not respond to interview requests.

The CRD told Black Press Media that the contracts are complex but once the performance period ends, the contractors could potentially receive holdback payments of $5 million for the plant’s completion, in accordance with the project agreement, along with an $800,000 performance incentive.

“We really can’t understand why the CRD would be willing to hand over the remaining money and accept the

handover when the odour deficiencies still remain,” said Rozlynne Mitchell, chair of the West Bay Residents Association and another nearby resident.

A host-community agreement with the Township of Esquimalt stated if the plant emits discernible odours beyond its property boundaries, the CRD will use “all reasonable efforts to investigate and remediate the source” in order to reduce the smell to the agreed level. It also included the requirement that the CRD will not accept the treatment plant until it incorporates odour-reducing technology intended to result in smells being unnoticeable past the plant’s site – a point reiterated in the approved motion.

The regional government said it’s committed to keeping odour confined to the property. The Township of Esquimalt also told Black Press Media it’s working diligently with the CRD to ensure all commitments are met per the project agreements.

The McLoughlin facility is equipped with several odour-treating components, state-of-the-art monitoring systems and processing tanks that are covered to trap and treat smelly air, which the CRD said results in “one of the highest levels of odour capture and treatment in the industry.”

During normal operation, the enclosed tanks scrub, capture and monitor foul air while backup equipment and generators reduce the possibility of odour escaping the facility when system failures occur.

But directors on the waste management committee have questioned why a CRD report confirmed those control systems were “fully functional and operating as per the design specifications during normal operating conditions” as of September, but residents continue to comment on the odour.

The CRD told Black Press Media that workers need to periodically access the process tanks, so some odours will escape in those times as the system is opened to the atmosphere. Another point creating concern is that a certifier has said Harbour Resources has met contractual requirements around summer and winter odour testing under the McLoughlin Point Wastewater Treatment Plant project agreement. The contract also included criteria for removing hydrogen sulphide emissions – which carry a rotten egg smell – which the CRD said have already been met. Staff added there could be other odour-causing compounds being generated that aren’t explicitly mentioned in the agreements.

“The contractor has demonstrated through acceptance testing and independent certification, that the plant has achieved compliance with the project agreement requirements,” the CRD said.

At last month’s committee meeting, staff repeatedly said in their view, the outstanding odour concerns fall outside the project agreement requirements.

Dejardins said residents need to

know the CRD has their backs going forward and that it’s going to fix the issue, while Mitchell questioned who will be on the hook for paying to stop the smells if the contract is closed.

“It’s not a whiff in the air, it’s a strong, pungent and distinctly identifiable odour,” said Mitchell. “It’s gone on and on and on and it has not gotten any better.”

Resident complaints continue to pour in, but CRD staff said the nature of those complaints means they could be from pipe cross-connection issues where sewage from Vic West homes is discharging into municipal storm drains that are dry in the summer months.

“This waste would be accumulating, likely causing significant odour in those areas,” CRD staff said.

However, the residents who spoke to Black Press Media and Desjardins took issue with that explanation as what they’ve been smelling has only been circulating since the plant started up.

“I understand there are cross connections and I’m glad we found those, but the challenge I have with those is those were there before, and so why do we think those are the ones that are causing all the odour at this point?” Desjardins asked. “I realize there’s been a lot of work done, but it’s not enough yet, residents are not able to enjoy their summer with their windows open.”

Witter noted, “I think what I find frustrating is why are citizens being asked to prove that there is a smell, it’s really up to the CRD to prove that there isn’t.”

The CRD is taking other steps to study and address the smells before the end of the year, including odour testing at different points during the day; modifying a second odour control system to treat air from tertiary treatment processes; and having Vancouver Island University fingerprint chemical odours from different sources to possibly link them to smells present in specific locations.

The report on the odour action will be presented before 2023 as CRD staff said the contract terms will need to be resolved by the end of the year.

Witter said contracts with the community stressed the plant wouldn’t produce any noticeable odours, so the CRD needs to uphold its end of the deal.

“It’s just a whole bunch of shit and it just stinks.”

A Metis sailor was recognized with a special medal on Tuesday (Nov. 8) by CFB Esquimalt’s commanding officer as part of National Indigenous Veterans Day. Petty Officer 1st Class Steve Morrison was awarded the Aboriginal Veterans Millennium Medal by navy Capt. J. Jeffrey Hutchinson. Morrison said receiving the medal was an honour, but receiving it is about far more than just himself.

“This is huge because this isn’t just me, this is for my aunts and uncles who were residential school survivors who stepped forward to serve in WWII. They were Metis and they had to hide who they were,” said Morrison. “This is for all of us – all of our ancestors who have gone before, and those who are serving now.”

Morrison said receiving the medal on National Indigenous Veterans Day made it all the more meaningful, as the day has become symbolic of the changes and reconciliation which have been occurring since it was first marked as a protest after Indigenous veterans were denied the opportunity to lay a wreath for their fallen comrades on Remembrance Day. “This started off as a protest in Winnipeg, and it has grown to this, where it is recognized

nationally and is slowly gaining recognition internationally across Turtle Island. This day is not organized by the military or the government, it is organized by us. I was down this morning by the cenotaph – there were two of us. We have not done this in Victoria before. Next year, hopefully, it will be a dozen of us, the next year, two or three dozen.”

Morrison currently serves as the elected national military co-chair of the Defence Aboriginal Advisory Group, an entity which serves as the voice of Indigenous members of the Department of National Defence at command levels up to the Minister of National Defence.

Lt.-Col. Catherine Askew, formation chaplain at CFB Esquimalt, said the medal is awarded to CAF members who have exemplified what it means to be both a member, and an Indigenous person living that life with integrity, and is also awarded in memory of Indigenous members who have served in the past.

“Petty Officer 1st Class Morrison exemplifies someone who believes in a better Canada, who lives a life of reconciliation, who believes we are all related – Indigenous, settler, new Canadians, visitors to our land – we are all related, and that is what this medal means today – that he is walking those diverse paths with integrity and with hope.”

Greater Victoria receives a failing grade in annual Vital Signs report Housing, cost-of-living top issues in report that looks at 12 indicators Jake Romphf News Staff

Locals have handed out a failing grade in Victoria’s Vital Signs report for the first time in its 17-year history, and insufficient housing is the recipient.

The Victoria Foundation’s annual report looked at 12 indicators about life on the south Island and was compiled using the more than 2,500 citizen responses to an online survey, along with other data sources. The central question guiding this year’s edition was ‘what does community mean to you?’

Residents got slightly happier with the community in 2021, giving overall quality of life in Greater Victoria a B+ compared to 2020’s B grade.

Housing and cost of living tied for respondents’ top issues facing Greater Victoria, with health care not far behind.

Seven in 10 respondents said the availability of home ownership options that would meet their needs is below average or poor, while 84 per cent said the same when it comes to affordable rentals.

The report found workers earning minimum wage would have to spend 43 per cent of their gross monthly income to rent a bachelor apartment in Greater Victoria last year – and those rents have jumped even higher in 2022. Those individuals would have to work 51 hours a

week (again based on 2021 figures) just to keep their rental payment at 30 per cent of their income – a standard commonly used to determine “affordable housing.”

Finding suitable living arrangements in Greater Victoria also got harder in 2021 as, for all unit types, rent increased and the rental vacancy rate fell to one per cent. Single-family dwellings, townhomes and condos also saw prices shoot up in 2021, when the total number of local housing starts increased but the region saw a drop in completed units from 2020.

“This issue area is one we really need to focus on in our community and it’s really drawn attention from those in the community that took part in the survey,” Sandra Richardson, CEO of Victoria Foundation, said at a Tuesday launch event for the report.

“It means that we have to work as a community to find a path forward and this really is a community that likes to get together and solve complex problems.”

At $20.46 an hour, Greater Victoria has the second-highest living wage in the province, with only Vancouver residents needing to earn more to maintain an adequate quality of life.

During a panel discussion at the launch, Emilie de Rosenroll, CEO of the South Island Prosperity Partnership, said housing was already the local private sector’s number-one issue in terms of recruiting and attracting workers before the pandemic. The market has only gotten more expensive since, she added.

The 2022 Vital Signs’ 12 focus areas include arts and culture, belonging and engagement, economy, sports and recreation, getting started, health and wellness, housing, learning, safety, environmental sustainability, standard of living and transportation.

Incoming premier faces pressing issues Being premier of B.C. these days won’t always feel like a plum job.

But we imagine David Eby knows what he’s getting into as he prepares to become premier on Nov. 18.

Eby will assume political leadership of a province dealing with a climate crisis, a housing shortage, toxic drug poisonings, a health-care system that’s unwell, and intensifying concerns about crime and public safety. With nearly a decade’s experience in the legislature, Eby knows all this well, and sought the premier’s position anyway, which says something about his resolve.

We’ll soon start seeing how he goes about balancing and prioritizing a daunting workload. Recent weeks have provided some glimpses, but British Columbians who had been hoping for a BC NDP leadership race got a little short-changed as Eby’s only challenger, Anjali Appadurai, was disqualified.

Until that point, however, there was leadership campaigning and so we have learned some platform positions of our next premier.

Of note, the former minister responsible for housing put forward an affordable housing plan with potentially significant measures including a new flipping tax and provincewide legalization of secondary suites. He’s also outlined plans regarding health care, public safety and the environment.

Eby will be challenged in being the guy who comes after Premier John Horgan. We would argue that Horgan’s personal popularity lifted the BC NDP to greater election victories than the party’s popularity might have otherwise provided. In an electoral system where relatively small changes to the popular vote have an outsize impact on seat count, Eby will have his work cut out for him, when the next election comes, against a refreshed and potentially rebranded BC Liberal Party.

Until then, it’s important to all British Columbians that Eby finds success in his new role. Addressing the challenges facing the province is critical to the future of all of us.

There will be pressure right away on B.C.’s next premier to meet those challenges headon – as there should be.

Voters can take steps to hold their council to account Your newly minted council has packed away the election signs, attended an orientation session on local government, and found their executive chair around the table.

There’s a sense of renewal in our community, never more so than after the transformative 2022 municipal election resulted in a rebooted local government. Many councillors, seven mayors and 16 CRD directors across the region are fresh faces, a substantial churn in elected representatives.

Their challenging task now is to spend hundreds of millions of dollars wisely to deliver quality services for 425,000 residents of the south Island. The mandate is also to have mercy on taxpayers in an increasingly unaffordable region during an inflationary period.

So, how do we hold our elected representatives to account to ensure they’re fulfilling their responsibility and meeting our individual needs?

It’s a very difficult job running a municipality with ever-increasing demands, costs and complexity. In recent years there’s been instances

of rude, even criminal behaviour – especially through social media – where residents have crossed the line. If your issue or beef is to be solved it simply must be approached dispassionately with as much civility as you can muster.

If you want to win your issue, build your argument. That includes collecting city hall documents, photos, media reports court documents and so on. A lot of conflicts are a result of incomplete information or misinformation.

Scraps with a council or city hall are best resolved in person over a coffee, and not over a phone or email. Many politicians in the region hold regular open houses to allow them to hear voters’ concerns. Follow it up with a letter recording the result - it’s a record of the conversation and how and when the issue will be resolved.

As a resident you have the right to address and appeal to council with your issue. It is fairly painless – you will have about five minutes – but again, bring your homework and documentation. You now have the issue on public record, which might interest the media.

If there’s no progress on your issue and you’ve reached a dead end, gather your homework and evidence and talk to a reporter. If you have a legitimate issue of interest to the public that’s newsworthy, they may bring it to light or even champion the issue. Do not underestimate writing to the editor, that letter section is one of the best-read parts of the newspaper and can be quite influential.

While abused by the public and the government, by and large, freedom of information legislation has improved the ability of the public to gain access to documents from local governments. It’s easily done and usually at little cost, but time-consuming and may come to nothing.

Potentially, it is an option to help fight city hall.

You most certainly can hold your local representative to account, but it will take the right frame of mind, documentation, patience and civility. Or, probably it will just take a sit-down coffee with your mayor or councillor.

He said they’ve already seen people pitch in to their fundraising challenge, so he urged others to give whatever they’re able to.

“It will take a whole community effort to deal with this issue over the coming winter.”

While the soaring inflation rate has come down a bit recently, grocery prices have continued to rise as Canadians paid 11.4 per cent more at the supermarket in September compared to the same month last year.

The Rainbow Kitchen in Esquimalt knew its patrons by name and used to see about one new face a month come through the doors for its various food programs, but now it’s seeing about five new users a day.

That surge in users has been consistent since the pandemic, and now high grocery prices and fewer donations have resulted in the community kitchen’s usually-stocked shelves and cupboards running bare.

Patrick Johnstone, executive director at Rainbow Kitchen, said they rely on donors, farmers and wholesalers to help them keep the shelves stocked. They provide around 180,000 meals every year, but are having to do more with less right now.

Statistics Canada said bad weather, high fertilizer and natural gas prices and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine contributed to that 40year high.

The funds from the Sovereign Order will help them offer 10,000 hot prepared meals to those who need them.

“It’s life-changing for the Rainbow Kitchen,” Johnstone said.

“They step up in times when we need it the most, they understand the impact on the community and how many meals this is going to provide and how many months of support this will make sure that the Rainbow Kitchen can stay

open for.”

The donations they get at this time of year are what gets them through winter, so the toughest part is ahead, Johnstone said.

Ivan Livingstone has been a longtime user of the kitchen, has volunteered for it and was eating breakfast there on Thursday.

“Their only mandate is to feed the hungry,” he said, praising the kitchen’s safe and welcoming atmosphere. The 76-year-old stressed it’s not just those experiencing homeless needing help with food right now, but also the working poor.

“If a bunch of people give a little, it helps a lot.”

Victoria Levesque has invited strangers to her home, which is known as The.Victoria.House, 24 times for intimate concerts.

“I’m just a citizen of Victoria who enjoys live music and was looking for a way to help support artists by providing a small space,” Levesque said. “I created my own house show venue. It’s been a really fun experience, but it does take work.”

Around 20 people have gathered for indoor shows at The.Victoria.House, and as many as 40 tickets will be sold for some outdoor concerts in Levesque’s yard and garden.

“That’s my current comfort zone, and I want people to feel comfortable.”

Levesque wishes there were more live music spaces in Victoria and believes house concerts are one way to help bridge that gap.

“Hosting a show gives you a direct connection with an artist. It makes our communities stronger and more vibrant. You can help impact the careers of artists. I’ll keep doing shows, but I can only do a certain amount. Some venues cost a lot of money to rent.”

The next concert Levesque has scheduled is on April 16 at 2 p.m. in her garden featuring Toronto-based singer-songwriter Shawna Caspi.

“She’s a folk artist,” Levesque said. “I’m really looking forward to it. I think she’s a great fit.”

Every show at The.Victoria.House has been presented via Side Door. Side Door is an online platform that connects artists with alternative venue spaces.

Laura Simpson and Dan Mangan started the company in 2017, and over 700 artists and bands have used the platform to book shows.

“We use technology to make things more efficient, transparent and accessible,” Simson said.

Side Door was featured on Thursday’s Dragons’ Den episode, and Simpson and Mangan made a deal with Arlene Dickinson. Dickinson offered them $500,000 in a convertible note.

“We were really gunning for Arlene,” Simson added. “The funding will support our push to support artists. We are really happy”

Victoria’s festival investment grant program now accepting applications Brendan Mayer News Staff

Applications are now open for the City of Victoria’s festival investment grants, which will help local community festivals and other events taking place in 2023.

The total grant budget is $400,000 and will help fund as much as 25 per cent of the operating costs of festivals.

A new funding stream of $75,000 was further added to the program this year for community-led Canada Day events.

The city is also applying for additional Canada Day funding from Canadian Heritage for the community-wide celebration. Last year, the festival investment program awarded grants to a total of 41 festivals and celebrations.

The deadline for applications is 4 p.m. on Dec. 30.

A session will be held online to provide information about the grants at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 15.

You can help seniors with a gift of food and social connection The More than Meals Program, a lifeline for so many seniors Did you know that Greater Victoria has one of the country’s highest proportions of seniors over the age of 65? Many local older adults and elders experience extreme loneliness, malnutrition, mobility issues and limited income. The last few years have amplified these challenges: social interactions with friends and family, grocery shopping, in-person doctor’s appointments, and outdoor activities have become limited. The result is increased isolation, depression and anxiety, as well as food insecurity.

Together with donors like you and with support from local businesses, United Way Southern Vancouver Island (UWSVI) has been able to help isolated seniors through the More than Meals program. Since its launch in May 2020, More Than Meals has grown from delivering 200 meals a week to 50,000 meals a year for seniors in the region. It provides not only nutritious meals to people in their own homes but also social connection. But the needs of seniors in the community remain high.

“My husband of 60 years passed away. I am on my own, and I know I am going to get a decent meal and don’t have to hit the peanut butter jar again,” says Anne, one of the seniors involved In the More Than Meals program.

For Anne, who also serves as a volunteer Board member with James Bay New Horizons, the More Than Meals program offers invaluable nutritional and emotional support to many seniors living in the James Bay neighbourhood.“I know some people are hard-pressed to find whether they are going to pay the rent, buy their meds or get a decent grocery bill this week and you shouldn’t have to make this kind of decision at our advanced years. More than 100 people charged in connection with a high-profile Vancouver Island logging protest won’t be getting a requested stay of proceedings.

And they won’t be granted an opportunity to combine their criminal contempt charges into a single court case either.

The B.C. Supreme Court has rejected both the requested stay, and an application by the Rainbow Flying Squad to merge the cases of 121 individuals charged with violating an injunction tied to blockades aimed at halting Teal Cedar Products logging in the Fairy Creek watershed.

In his decision, Justice Robin Baird said a stay is a “very rare and drastic remedy” only possible when it’s determined prosecuting the case would “offend society’s sense of justice.”

“What the applicants propose, in effect, is a wide-ranging, ad hoc, public inquiry into the RCMP enforcement operation which is beyond the institutional competence and capacities of an ordinary criminal court.”

should be joined because it would allow them to demonstrate systemic misconduct by the RCMP in enforcing the injunction.

Baird said any misconduct would still be demonstrable through separate trials and joining the 121 cases would be “wholly unmanageable by virtue of its size and complexity.”

He said the individuals could apply for a stay of proceedings individually, which “can be based, in part at least, on alleged systemic misconduct unrelated to the personal experiences of the applicant.”

“Each applicant must respond independently to the charge of criminal contempt, and each seeks the benefit of a substantial and exceptional remedy in their individual circumstances. In my view, the allegation that subjective mistreatment was part of a generalized system or campaign of police misconduct does not alter the fact that, in every case, the question is whether the individual applicant is eligible to be granted a stay of proceedings.”

Baird noted that each of the 121 individuals intends to plead guilty to the charge of criminal contempt.

The crown is planning 73 different trials, based on when individuals were arrested.

Since around mid-May, 2021, there have been more than 1,200 arrests while protesting old-growth logging in the area, in a remote section of southwest Vancouver Island near Port Renfrew.

The Crown has charged around 400 individuals with criminal contempt of court for violating the terms of the injunction.

The injunction was extended back in September to last until Sept. 26, 2023.

Remembrance Day ceremonies set to return to form Remembrance Day sees the return of full-scale events after two years of adapted ceremonies due to the pandemic. Here is a list of many of the services taking place Nov. 11 across Greater Victoria.

Victoria The provincial capital hosts a ceremony at the cenotaph on the legislature grounds starting at 10:30 a.m.

The nearby Royal B.C. Museum is also set to host a free performance by the Victoria Children’s Choir on Nov. 11 from 12:30 p.m. to 1.

Esquimalt Esquimalt residents are invited to join members of the Royal Canadian Navy, cadets, Royal Canadian Legion, Scouts Canada, and the Royal New Zealand Navy for their ceremony at Memorial Park from 10 a.m. to noon.

A parade will start at the intersection of Admirals and Esquimalt roads, and will make its way through the community, ending at the cenotaph at Memorial Park.

Oak Bay Oak Bay offers both a virtual

and in-person ceremony this year at the cenotaph on Beach Drive, starting at 10:55 a.m.

During the ceremony, the 2800-block of Beach Drive will be closed to vehicle traffic.

The ceremony can be watched via live stream at lumeraevents.com/oakbayremembers.

Central Saanich Remembrance Day ceremonies in Central Saanich start at 10:45 a.m. with a fly-past, followed by the ceremony itself at 10:50 a.m. at the cenotaph in Brentwood Bay’s Pioneer

Park.

Saanich The Saanich ceremony returns to in-person after two years as a virtual event. All are invited to attend the cenotaph, located outside Saanich Municipal Hall from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

Following a military parade, active and retired service members, police, fire and local community groups will lay wreaths.

Groups that would like to lay a wreath will have a designated time following the ceremony.

There will be no reception this year, and municipal hall will be closed to the public.

Parking and seating will be limited.

Langford The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 91 will once again host a ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park in Langford (at the corner of Veterans Memorial Parkway and Goldstream Avenue).

The ceremony gets underway at 10:30 a.m. and is expected to be larger than the events of the past two years.

The parade will march from Station Avenue to the cenotaph at the park, but will not march out of the park as in past events.

Following the service, the Legion will have a tent setup in the parking lot of the nearby Goldstream Masonic Hall where snacks and refreshments will be served, as the branch building is undergoing renovations.

All the information Freeman has accumulated over the years is being compiled into two volumes, one acting as an index of all the Wrens for which he has been able to confirm names and service numbers, and another volume focused on the stories of those Wrens he’s been able to speak with or gather more information from.

“Once I put it to bed and publish it, hopefully, that will be the end of it. However, my experience – having published

Because somebody always finds something that you haven’t found before that somebody is holding on to her mother’s stuff and didn’t know what to do with it.”

Esquimalt banner program bolsters military honours Program helps families honour loved ones lost Christine van Reeuwyk News Staff

Warning: This story mentions suicide When people walk or drive a handful of blocks in downtown Esquimalt, Megan Hiltz hopes they’ll reflect on the red, white and green banners hanging there.

Bearing the details of late Canadian Forces service members, the banners hang for a few weeks each fall, around Remembrance Day. The plan pitched by Hiltz was quickly supported by the township.

“We’re a military town and any way that we can show that – from our heart or from our lamp poles – we want to do it,” said Mayor Barb Desjardins. “You’re going down Esquimalt Road and you’re reading a bit of history,” The idea, pitched to the township

by Hiltz, offers a new way to add another layer of remembrance within the community, and has been wholly embraced, Desjardins said.

Hiltz brought the concept with her from Ontario, where a banner bearing her grandfather’s likeness graced the community of Parry Sound. She still has a small version of it in her home

Then 2020 was, well, 2020.

Last year, banners flew for the first time.

Families pay the costs associated with creating the banners and provide

the information honouring a military member. Esquimalt staff install and take down the banners each year and the township stores them between uses. After the third year, the family receives the banner as a keepsake.

While the annual display honours those who’ve gone before, it signals support for the currently serving military members and families that call

Esquimalt home, Desjardins said.

The mayor sponsored one to honour her own father, Gerald B. Wilkes, a naval seaman in the Second World War. “I get a nice reminder of my family and the role they’ve played in terms of helping to serve our country,” she said.

Hiltz maintains two banners.

She facilitates a banner for Dan Unrau in memory of his brother Cpl. John Unrau, an Afghanistan war veteran who died by suicide on Canada Day 2015.

Dan, an Ontario resident, continues to lobby for awareness around post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that his brother battled for years after his return from Afghanistan.

Her personal banner is dedicated to ‘Soldiers of Suicide’ building on the work of the late Lise Charron, founder of the non-profit Honour Our Canadian Soldiers whose work led to a plaque at the National Military Ceremony in Ottawa dedicated to remembering service members who have died by suicide as a result of their service to Canada.

“We don’t just lose men and women in battle, we lose them at home right now,” Hiltz said.

Hiltz also organizes a candlelight ceremony each fall at Esquimalt Veterans Cemetery (God’s Acre) in memory of soldiers of suicide. The

local roll call for that event has about 40 names, she said, but feels that list could be far higher.

Showing reverence with the banner program is important for her personally as both grandfathers served in the Second World War, her partner is retired navy and her ex-husband still serves.

The banners are akin to the poppy, serving as an act of remembrance and a reminder of the humans behind uniforms and statistics.

“Each Canadian veteran has a name, these are actual people,” she said.

Hiltz would love to see them hang year-round, she also notes it’s a navy town, but just sparking introspection is a start.

“Think about what that poppy means, and if you’re not sure find someone in a uniform and ask them.

I’m sure they’ll be more than happy to talk to you,” Hiltz said. “Start a conversation.”

Reverence for those who served resonates among the military veterans living at Carlton House of Oak Bay. Most of the boys they grew up alongside were members of cadets or scouts and joined up, explained Charles Etchell.

“Everyone was itching to get into service and get into war. It was just a different era,” he said.

Etchell finished high school in 1943 and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force immediately, training as a pilot in Manitoba and Calgary. “I was all set to go … and they dropped the bomb and that was the end of my air force career. But I loved flying,” he said.

He’s part of a generation that grew up with men heading off to war – many never to return, others injured physically, emotionally or both upon return.

It was all new, exciting and the travel was incredible, but there was always the work against the potential threat, agreed James (Ray) Webber, who also joined in 1955.

“It was the buildup for the Cold War, so things were moving pretty quickly in those days,” he said. “We were getting aircraft, preparing the squadrons to go to Europe so it was pretty darned exciting.”

Henderson agreed and recalled a particular time when they were among a group of Canadian ships sailing the North Sea and being tailed by a Russian vessel.

“That was scary, in those days our ships had no armour to speak of,” he said.

Another naval veteran, Jim Newby, joined the navy in Edmonton in late 1943.

In particular, he recalls a trip around North America. The war was just ending when he boarded HMCS Charlottetown (1943) and they travelled down the east coast, through the Panama Canal and back up to Victoria. The frigate was scuttled in the waters off Victoria as an artificial reef. “It was a good ship,” he said.

He served on HMCS Ontario until August 1947 when he was discharged at Naden.

It was a valuable experience with a wonderful new type of job. The world was pretty big when you grew up in small-town Manitoba, she explained.

In the comfortable meeting room with rain falling outside, Second World War veteran John Hillman sits surrounded by his fellow military veterans of a variety of generations. Hillman, 103, joined the Royal Air Force in 1937 at the age of 17.

“I joined the air force because there were no jobs for youngsters coming out of school in 1937,” he said. After failing to fulfil the pilot requirements, they put him in the tail, and he became a wireless operator.

He recalls being posted to France in August 1939.

“We lost half the squadron when the Germans broke through,” he said. With their aircraft rendered unusable, he and 60 others were told to make their way back to England as best they could “We were left with approaching

(Christine van Reeuwyk/News Staff) the western coast of France where a boat called the Lancaster would pick us up.” They finally arrived nearly four weeks later, one day late as the boat had been bombed and sunk.

They set out to find another way home. He remembers a young flying officer who rode a motorcycle scouting out for where the Germans were, then mapping a course out of France. They eventually got to Brittany where a British destroyer picked them up.

Hillman served in the RAF until 1949 and was awarded four Second World War medals and saw action in France, Britain, Africa and Italy.

He served in Burma from 1944 until Japan officially surrendered the next year.

“I had an angel on each shoulder looking after me,” Hillman said.

“I was shot at and bombed for the whole of my service and I never got a scratch. I succumbed to the hideous temperatures and things in Marie Gill joined the air force in 1951.

Wounded Warriors offers vital programs to veterans 28-year Saanich veteran speaks to the power of Wounded Warriors Canada programs Hollie Ferguson News Staff

Stephane Marcotte served in the Canadian Navy for 28 years, 18 of which took place deep below the surface of the ocean in a submarine.

For his remaining 10 years, he was above the water on ships and teaching.

In 2017, he was finally able to retire from his life of service, only to carry with him post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from various missions and the Gulf War in 2002.

For Marcotte, Remembrance Day is an opportunity to honour the lives of service people lost and express gratefulness for those that were not, including his own.

His life he said, he owes to the programs and resources provided by Wounded Warriors Canada.

As a volunteer and beneficiary of the organization, he is able to speak to the power of their programs.

“I retired in 2017, and ever since I’ve been doing some volunteer work and more and more with Wounded Warriors,” Marcotte said. “I talk about how I’m kind of living proof of what the program does. It’s helping me, my mental health and helped me to procure a service dog and so I can go out and have a quality of life. That’s what Wounded Warriors did for me - they gave me a quality of life and a life.”

The equine couples program helped him and his wife Susan learn how to communicate with each other to truly understand the other.

“We needed something to help us understand each other,” Marcotte said. “The second course we took was a five-day course. It was an in-person attendance at Bear Mountain for five days. It was a couples COPE program - Couples Overcoming PTSD Every day. During that time, she could really understand what I was going through and she could understand me more and that’s one of the reasons probably why we are still together.”

A combination of joint and solo programs specialized for spouses helped build their communication skills, giving them the ability to truly understand each other even through the challenges of PTSD. For the last nine years, the Marcottes have worked with the organization helping with the annual Wounded Warrior Run B.C., which goes the length of Vancouver Island to raise money for the same programs that saved Stephane’s life and the Marcottes’ marriage.

“We run between 600 and 700 kilometres in eight days to raise money and awareness for the veterans and first responders and their families,” he said.

Not only did Wounded Warriors give Marcotte

purpose and drive – the organization helped him get his service dog, Sarge, during one of their events at Bear Mountain.

“In that event, they had a Vancouver Island Compassion Dog Society – they are a service dog provider, they were there and I saw a dog.

His name was Hunter, I bent over and he just licked my face and I just started to cry. I was so relieved. So then I said ‘I need a dog.’ I’d never had a dog in my life. That day I put my application in and three months later I was starting the program – that changed my life, me and my family – my marriage. It saved my life personally, I’m still here because of my dog.”

From helping him overcome anxiety to alerting him when his blood sugar is low, Sarge has impacted Marcotte’s life in profound ways.

“He can get me out of the house,” he said.

“I can enjoy life outside of my house without always looking behind me to see if somebody is coming to hurt me. When I have nightmares from different events in my life and in service, he wakes me up and grounds me and that’s a great tool.”

The benefits of Wounded Warriors programs and events that Marcotte has attended far surpass just happiness and security. They’ve ensured that he is able to be around for another Remembrance Day, to celebrate his continued fight in the face of PTSD and to remember those he’s lost – both at home and abroad.

“It’s one day we can remember what sacrifice all service persons did for us to give us freedom and liberty. It’s not always overseas, we lose people here in Canada as well, so it’s something to remember them as well. A lot of people, they’re gone too soon so we have to remember that they’re gone for us and our children.”

After spending 745 hours flying, Victoria veteran Bob Miller, 97, has seen a lot.

Miller enlisted during the Second World War with his parents’ permission when he was 17 years old.

“My parents approved,” Miller said from his Saanich retirement home. “They were very familiar with serving. They didn’t have any problem with it.”

Miller was inspired to enlist after his brothers Jim and Lloyd both signed up to serve with the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Jim was a wireless air gunner and Lloyd was a fighter pilot.

“I had hoped that I would be chosen as a potential pilot, the same as most of the other fellows,” Miller said in his autobiography Flying, Forests & Family. “No decision was made as to where you would be placed or be posted until later in your training.”

Miller ended up training to be a pilot and his first flight was from Edmonton to High River, Alta. on his 18th birthday.

Following service training and elementary and service flying school, Miller was posted in England. He travelled by train from Alberta to Halifax and boarded the Aquitania on Oct. 22, 1943.

Miller graduated from the advanced flying unit in Perton and was posted to the No. 7 Flying Instructors’ School in England, formerly the Central Flying School, which is the longest-existing flying training school.

He trained pilots and flew Fairchild Cornell planes during his time at the school.

“I enjoyed my time in England.

It was very interesting.”

Miller is one of nine children and said he remembers writing letters to his family while he was in England.

Miller feels fortunate not to have any flying accidents during the war.

After the Second World War, he returned to Canada as a commissioned officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force and was also commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Edmonton Regiment.

“It was a good living when I was commissioned,” Miller said.

“We were looked after. We had our own nice accommodations. It was very nice. I didn’t spend much time in the army, since I decided to complete Grade 12 and go to the University of British Columbia to study forest engineering.”

Miller was released from the air force in 1946.

“I’m proud that I served. I don’t remember if I was ever released from the reserve army. I might still

He says he wants to ensure the stories of our veterans are not lost.

After serving, Miller worked in the forestry industry on Vancouver Island and raised three children

with his wife Gloria.

Miller moved to Veterans Memorial Lodge in September, where he supports fellow veterans and participates in the veterans association group.

Korean War no longer Canada’s Forgotten War, says UVic historian North and South remain technically at war nearly 70 years after armistice agreement Wolfgang Depner News Staff

The Korean War between 1950 and 1953 continues to shed its status as Canada’s Forgotten War as current events on the Korean Peninsula and continuous research have shifted the historical perception of that conflict.

David Zimmerman, who teaches military history at the University of Victoria, said the status of the Korean War as Canada’s Forgotten War stems from its proximity to the far-larger Second World War, which featured far more Canadian soldiers and casualties.

According to official figures, 516 Canadian soldiers died serving in Korea. That is 400 less than the number of Canadians who died on the beaches of Dieppe in a single day in August 1942. But if the Canadian contribution to the Korean conflict as measured by material, personnel and casualties pales compared to its respective contributions in the First and Second World War, the publication of several new books has cast the conflict into a new, more comprehensive light as Canada prepares to mark the 70th anniversary of the armistice on the Korean Peninsula in July 1953.

The conflict itself was also no less consequential for those who served and suffered in it.

For now, North Korea remains under Beijing’s tight leash. China’s aggressive posture toward Taiwan and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine inclusive of nuclear sabre-rattling also consumes a lot of attention, said Zimmerman.

But at the same time, “the intensity of the confrontational policies” which North Korea pursues make it clear that the public should also be paying more attention to the Korean Peninsula, he added.

This said, he also cautions against drawing any parallels between the war between Russia and Ukraine and the war between the Koreas.

They represent very different situations and it is hard to draw any direct links.

“There is always this element of chance, there is always this element of uncertainty (in war) and one of the things that historians make the mistake of, is when they are asked by people like you to predict what is going to happen, my prediction is I don’t know.” wolfgang.depner@peninsulanewsreview.com

Veteran enjoyed every moment of his 42 years with air force Brendan Mayer News Staff

After serving for 42 years with the Royal Canadian Air Force, veteran William Floyd believes times are fun when you’re flying. Floyd joined the air force in 1953.

“I learned to trust people in the Royal Canadian Air Force,” Floyd said from his Saanich retirement home.

“It was a very good service.

The best in the world as far as I’m concerned. You trusted the officers completely. It made me more trustworthy because you had to be. We were standing up as brave Canadians and making a good example of ourselves and were learning

to be friendly.”

Floyd was working as a mechanic millwright in Kitimat when he learned about the life of Geoffrey de Havilland Jr., which inspired him to be a pilot.

De Havilland was a British test pilot, who died while carrying out tests in the de Havilland DH 108 TG306 aircraft which broke up over the Thames Estuary.

“He has quite a story,” Floyd added. “It was very inspirational. The man was totally fearless. I sort of followed him and his habits.”

Floyd’s been to approximately 16 countries.

“I’ve flown all over. You learn about all the national-

Floyd says he never regretted joining the air force.

“I enjoyed every bit of it. I had a great time flying. I had a good job. I was paid well. We demanded good service. The Canadian government raised our pay quite high in 1976 and then it was all good.”

Remembrance Day continues to be important for Floyd.

“It’s about honouring those who died to save their country.

They died to preserve our way of life. We now need to treat fellow Canadians well.”

West Shore poppy fund support comes from all over, even prison Justin Samanski-Langille News Staff

Every year, Royal Canadian Legion branches across the country receive thousands of donations from people from all walks of life who want to do their part to support the country’s veterans. For more than six years, the West Shore’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch 91 has received donations from what many would consider an

unlikely source: inmates at the William Head Institution in Metchosin.

“The first time I got this donation from William Head, I thought it was from someone called William, but it wasn’t, it was the correctional institution,” said poppy fund treasurer Ervin Kobialko. “Their first was around $170, and they have continued it each year. Last year was $561, I just about flipped.”

According to a statement from the

Correctional Service of Canada, prisoners contributing to the Legion’s poppy fund is an annual tradition followed at many institutions across the country. At William Head, many of the inmates have either served in the Canadian Armed Forces or have relatives who have.

Each year, the institution’s Inmate Wellness Committee gets a poppy box from the West Shore branch, with inmates donating as they see

Kobialko said the inmates’ contributions have added up to $2,085 since 2016, a contribution he said was well worth celebrating in the community, especially when every penny contributed to the campaign helps support the work the Legion does for veterans and their families in the community.

“They probably don’t have much funds over there, but they still donate something.”

Esquimalt museum offers a look into Canadian military history The museum is open to the public, providing visitors a glimpse of military life Hollie Ferguson News Staff

The Esquimalt Naval and Military Museum remains one of Victoria’s best-kept secrets.

Just on the outskirts of the city, visitors can turn onto the Canadian Forces Base in Esquimalt, where the museum is open to the community.

There are both temporary and permanent exhibits focused on a wide range of topics from women and Indigenous Peoples in the forces to the varying types of ships and living conditions service members worked in.

“The museum has two functions: it’s to educate the public, but it’s also a great archive for researchers,” said Paul Seguana, a retired lieutenant commander who volunteers at the museum.

With so much to look at, walking through the museum can take an hour or more, despite its unimposing appearance from the outside.

The different exhibits feature various bells from ships, diving gear,

technology, and more. Many include lifesize wax figurines to help visitors visualize what it was like in those spaces.

Visitors can even take a peak at what a captain’s galley looked like as well as see how sailors lived on ships during the First and Second World wars.

With each room presenting a different theme or story, visitors can leave having a comprehensive understanding of Canadian naval and military presence at home and abroad through time.

The museum buildings themselves are a piece of history – dating back to when Esquimalt and Victoria were settled, Seguana said.

The value of the museum lies in not only its ability to connect the community to military history, but also as a resource for researchers and archivists to tell stories accurately based on the artifacts in the museum.

“It’s really important that this exists, because if it didn’t exist, would we even be able to tell this story?”

Seguana said.

The museum is also an ode to Canadian pride, with many of the exhibits showing the lives of sailors and military personnel in the world wars.

“There is something to be proud of, that in a time in the world where the forces of democracy were engaged in a life-or-death struggle with totalitarian forces, Canada played an in-

credibly important role, in the air too and on land,” Seguana said. “Often we forget that about ourselves in that history, but it is something of some pride.”

Even though the museum focuses on certain individuals out of many, the whole establishment is really the story of a collective experience. One that shaped not only Victoria, but countries across the globe.

The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and visitors are required to bring a government-issued ID, such as a driver’s licence or passport.

Coins on tombstones, a tradition that has gradually taken root in Canada Denomination of coin can show relationship to fallen soldier Have you ever wandered through a military cemetery and noticed coins on some of the gravestones? It has become a silent message of support to the fallen soldier’s family.

A penny to show you have visited. A nickel if you and the deceased trained at boot camp together. A dime if you served with the deceased in any capacity. A quarter if you were with the soldier when they were killed.

That is the most widely understood version of what each coin domination means when placed on a gravestone. The tradition, like many old tradi-

tions, has had its roots worn away over the years and the meanings seem to vary slightly depending on who you ask.

The specific practice of leaving certain denominations of coins as a message to the fallen soldier’s family can be loosely traced to the Vietnam War. When some claim political divide over the war made it uncomfortable or inappropriate to visit the family of the

deceased. So instead, the coins became a way to show the fallen soldier’s family that you had visited their grave and how you had known them before they died. At some point, it seems the ritual spread up across the border and cemetery caretakers across Canada and even locally in Victoria can confirm that they have seen coins left on gravestones around Greater Victoria.

Aside from specific singular coins being left behind, other traditions have popped up in history such as leaving coins as a symbolic gesture of buying a round for a fallen comrade.

Even as far back as ancient Greece, it seems coins have played a part in remembering and honouring the dead, though back then burying coins with the deceased or leaving coins at gravesites was

So, while not as widely practised as leaving other offerings at gravestones and memorials in honour of the deceased, the practice of leaving coins on veterans’ graves has been going on quietly for many years in North America and continues to spread.

Culture fusion proves fruitful for doctor on televised baking show Christine van Reeuwyk News Staff

Zoya Thawer is officially a star baker as she continues to keep her promise, fusing culture into her creations on The Great Canadian Baking Show.

The Victoria doctor is among the final four of the CBC television show and was named the star baker on the Nov. 6 episode on the same night fellow Islander John Fowler of Langford, was named bottom baker.

The televised competition started with 10 people making and tasting in a tent for judges – and celebrated pastry chefs – Kyla Kennaley and Bruno Feldeisen, as they whittle down to one winner.

Ahead of the season, Thawyer told Black Press Media she would share the flavour of her faith, Ismaili Muslim, and culture with East African roots and a touch of India. “I think that’s a big part of it for me. It’s always extra meaningful when that shows through. That is always where my focus is,” she said.

The bakers do three – signature, technical and showstopper – bakes each episode. For the most recent, pastry night challenged the bakers with traditional chimney cakes, mango rose tart with shortcuts and finally baklava.

“We were lucky enough to try each other’s bakes and everything was so different. It was cool to see how that concept merged into five completely different concepts,” she said.

Traditionally the desert consists of nuts, syrup and phyllo – a dough most recipes suggest purchasing.

“I thought it was super fun. I’m always one of those people who will plan out a bake over couple days and do something super complicated,” she said.

Thawer remains the lone B.C. contestant, the recently departed Fowler shone during botanicals week. Those remain his favourite bakes of the season as well – particularly the spruce tip cookies with hibiscus jelly. “I really do love those,” the University of Victoria administrator said.

The Oct. 23 episode also happened to be the night his fiance Martin Cockerill surprised him with a viewing party with friends including Thawer.

While the episodes were filmed months ago, “I was pretty emotional last night watching it and my partner was as well,” Fowler said the morning after his departure episode aired.

“You still get wrapped up into the show. It still makes me want to bake every time I watch it.”

“It’s you against the ingredients or the time or yourself really and the other bakers are there as support and sometimes helpers,” he said, noting the hosts and judges were similarly supportive. “They’re there to critique you but they’re also there to make you a better baker as well.”

Fowler said he left the tent more confident than when he arrived, something the judges also noticed.

“We’re sending home somebody who came into the tent with strong skills and he just kept growing and improving challenge after challenge. I know that John is leaving here full of inspiration and ready to keep on baking,” Kennaley said at the end of the episode.

Thawer is among the four remaining bakers as the semi-final episode airs on Nov. 13.

Royals trudge through first eastern conference road trip In their furthest venture in over two years, the Victoria Royals struggled through a six-game eastern conference road trip.

The Royals dropped five of their six games against the Alberta and Saskatchewan WHL opponents over the last two weeks, with many of the Royals playing in the prairies for the first time in their major junior careers.

Victoria rode into Alberta to begin the trip against a still-undefeated Red Deer team. It was a rough welcoming to the Central Division as the Royals fell 6-2 to the Rebels in the first game of the eastern swing.

That was followed by a 6-1 loss to Swift Current Broncos in late October before Victoria headed to Medicine Hat the next day. It was there where the Royals got their first and only win of the trip.

Royals forward Jake Poole got the overtime game-winner against the Tigers, capping his second hat trick in the same week. That helped the Royals get the 4-3 win after being down 2-0. Goaltender Tyler Palmer also earned the third star in that contest after stopping 30 of 33 pucks that came his way.

The Royals hadn’t played the eastern conference in either of the last two seasons due to pandemic travel restrictions. That means the road trip allowed some of the players who call the prairies home to see some familiar faces

in the stands.

“My uncles, aunties, and cousins never get to see me play. Them getting out to come watch me is really nice,” Palmer said in a release.

“Although I’ve never really played in these rinks, I’ve been in them, I’ve watched games in them, so it’s cool to be playing there now.”

The capital city team then received some friendly fire as Victoria product and Lethbridge defenceman Nolan Bentham led his squad with two goals when the Hurricanes hosted the Royals and took a 5-1 win.

In their penultimate road trip match, Victoria dropped a 5-2 contest in Calgary.

After being tied 1-1 to close the opening frame, Victoria got into some penalty woes and the Hitmen made them pay with two powerplay goals in the first four minutes of the second.

Calgary would get two more in the third to solidify the win.

Closing out the trip in Edmonton on Nov. 4., Victoria worked its way back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game in the third, but the Oil Kings would net the winner in overtime.

After the six-game travel stint, the Royals will be back home for two games against the Portland Winterhawks on Nov. 11 and 12. Puck drop on Friday’s game is 7:05 p.m. at the SaveOn-Foods Memorial Centre, with Saturday’s getting underway at 6:05 p.m.

Pollinator garden brings thousands of species to Victoria airport grounds the space look its best, it is also designed to help pollinator insects thrive.

More than 2,000 plants will go into the 1,100 square-metre garden, with many seeds lying dormant until spring.

According to the release, bees are the most effective pollinators with more than 450 native bee species in the province. Pollination is an essential process for most plant species to reproduce.

Without pollinators, many plant life cycles would be unsuccessful, affecting everything from food production, and local wildlife, to

overall ecosystem health.

Pollinator gardens are most impactful when they are planted with native species to support native pollinators. Native species have evolved to their landscape and climate over thousands of years which also means they required little care and maintenance to thrive.

Auxiliary aims to raise holiday cheer, funds through poinsettia campaign Deadline approaching in annual hospital fundraising campaign The holiday season is just around the corner and that means the deadline is quickly approaching for the Victoria General Hospital Auxiliary’s annual poinsettias for patients fundraiser.

Funds from this year’s campaign are earmarked for a Bilichek, which is a noninvasive tool used to read jaundice in newborns without a needle.

Along with poinsettias, new offerings featured this year include two planters. Full of greenery which can last indoors with a poinsettia, these decorative trays come in either 6.5-inch or 14-inch diameters. Poinsettias for sale range in size from four to 10-inch pots and come in a variety of colours.

The campaign also allows donors to become a ‘Santa.’

The auxiliary chooses a department and honours staff members with a personalized card and a poinsettia to thank them on behalf of the com-

munity. This year, staff in all three intensive care units – almost 200 people – will be recognized.

Community members can donate $20 to the auxiliary to help make that happen.

The poinsettias and planters are grown locally at Hilltop Greenhouses in Saanich.

Founded nearly 40 years ago, the auxiliary’s only aim is to fundraise for the hospital. Most of its revenue is generated from the hospital shop, which stocks clothing, candy, books, home decor and more.

During the pandemic, the auxiliary was unable to solicit new members, who run the all-volunteer shop, work on other campaigns and events, and support the organization.

A Greater Victoria woman plans to go see the New York Yankees play, pay down her mortgage and help her family after winning almost half a million dollars playing Lotto Max. Kerri Butterworth won $474,526.70 from the Oct. 4 draw and was at home when she checked her ticket.

“I usually look at the results first online and that’s when I saw there was a winner in Victoria,” Butterworth said in a statement. “I was in shock. I didn’t think I was reading it right.”

The first person Butterworth broke the news to was her youngest daughter.

UVic team researches injecting CO2 into ocean floor A University of Victoria-led research project may have found a place to put gigatons of extra carbon dioxide floating in the atmosphere.

The process involves injecting captured carbon into porous rock on the ocean floor in areas like the Cascadia Basin off the coast of Vancouver Island, which reacts with other minerals to solidify into carbonate rock. A new research paper from a team at the Solid Carbon Project, run

by Ocean Networks Canada (which is a UVic initiative), estimates that process can happen in as little as 25 years.

The carbon is trapped by the natural layer of sedimentary rock, made of up to 800 metres of sandstone and siltstone. Even with the variety in the ocean floor, researchers still found mineralization could be expected within 100 years.

“What we have shown in this study is that carbon dioxide can transform to rock within 25 years as opposed to cases where mineralization takes many millennia,” Adedapo Awolayo, the research paper’s principal author and a former post-doctoral fellow on the Solid Carbon research team, said in a statement.

Benjamin Tutolo, a researcher with Solid Carbon and associate professor in the Department of Geoscience at the University of Calgary, says the research team projects that 25 years post-injection, 95 per cent of the CO2 will be mineralized.

“Once it’s down there, it’s not going to go anywhere for a long time,” he said in a statement.

The 25-year timeline is currently based on modelling and simulations, but if the demonstration project goes well, a permanent equipment placement could aim to start by injecting half a million tons of CO2 per year at each sequestration site. If the technology is adopted globally, it could scale up to more than 20 gigatons per year by 2100, according to Kate Moran, Ocean Network Canada’s president

and chief executive officer.

Currently, human activity adds around 50 gigatons of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere each year.

Tutolo said the findings are good news, but not mission accomplished when it comes to tackling climate change.

“This is not a ‘get out of jail free’ card,” Tutolo says. “All pathways to remain under 1.5 degrees of global warming require the use of negative emissions technologies such as this, but we also need to decarbonize the economy to get there. We need both.”

Tutolo added that projections to keep warming under 1.5 degrees require 10 gigatons of carbon to be captured out of the atmosphere by mid-century.
