The man who shot four people over five hours in Langley before being shot by police Monday has been identified as Jordan Daniel Goggin, a 28-yearold Surrey man.

Goggin was known to police but had “non-criminal contact” with them, said Sgt. David Lee of IHIT. Goggin was killed shortly after he encountered Langley RCMP and Emergency Response Team members near the corner of 200 Street and the Langley Bypass at about 5:45 a.m. on July 25. The City of Surrey officially opened its new artificial turf field and rubberized walking track at Newton Athletic Park.

Members of city council, staff and KidsPlay Foundation children held an official ribbon-cutting to celebrate the opening July 21.

The turf, according to a release from the city, is a Surrey’s “17th full-sized FIFA regulation artificial turf field.” The field also includes “tournament-level LED field lighting and lines and markings for soccer, mini soccer and lacrosse.”

Construction is scheduled to start next spring, with completion in 2024. Parts of the existing rec centre will also be renovated to include a new childcare centre on the second floor, and the existing preschool will remain.

IHIT is asking to speak with anyone who may have had contact with Goggin or know of his activities.

On Tuesday, police released images of Goggin and the vehicle he was driving.

Goggin is described as six-footone, about 150 lbs, with light brown hair and a “slight” goatee.

He was initially wearing a black T-shirt and board shorts before changing into brown overalls and a camouflage shortsleeved shirt.

IHIT said investigators are “aware of one additional witness who has since been identified and (are) determining if there are others.”

A second-quarter financial report to Surrey council forecasts a $10.7 million budget shortfall on account of “higher than budgeted” expenditures for policing.

“In light of this forecast, each department, including Surrey Police Services and the RCMP will be challenged with managing their respective budgets in a manner to minimize or eliminate the forecasted shortfall by end of year,” Kam Grewal, Surrey’s general manager of finance, advises council in the corporate report.

The report updates the City

of Surrey’s financial activity for the second quarter of 2022 and compares it to the 2022 Financial Plan and the same period for 2021. The report was received by council Monday night with councillors Steven Pettigrew and Linda Annis opposed.

Earlier this month, the Surrey Police Board reported that the Surrey Police Service has “underspent” nearly $7 million of its operational budget. The board reported on the fledgling police force’s year-to-date expenditures to May 31 at its last board meeting, on July 6.

Grewal noted in his report, related to the second-quarter budget for policing operations, that City Police Support Service currently has a “favourable variance” of $1.4 million and that’s forecast to be $1.56 million by year’s end.

Construction of a new Bear Creek Athletics Centre grandstand is set to begin in September, with work completed by December 2023.

Richmond-based Heatherbrae Builders pitched the lowest bid to build the 2,200-seat grandstand. Surrey city council approved the construction contract to the company on Monday (July 25).

The bid was $23,294,250 – a few million dollars lower than the initial $27.5-million project budget.

“The scope of work related to this contract consists of the demolition of the existing washroom building, announcer’s booth, and bleachers, and the construction of a grandstand with 2,200 seats, including team changerooms, public washrooms, and associated site servicing,” notes a report to the council.

Plans are to build a grandstand as part of a new “destination athletics centre” for Surrey, with permanent

The athletics centre “will position Surrey as a regional destination for high-level soccer and football games in addition to a full range of track and field sports,” according to city hall.

Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum said Monday it’s “going to be a

real exciting stadium for all sorts of sports, but especially for track and field and so forth.

“It will provide a good cover for people to watch,” he added.

“It will also give us the opportunity again to attract international meets or international events down to Bear Creek. With that comes a huge area which I think Surrey has a great future and that’s sport tourism.”

The Surrey Sport & Leisure Complex at 16555 Fraser Highway is getting some work done.

Surrey council awarded more than $1 million in contracts Monday night.

The first was for a HVAC unit replacement, with council awarding $521,325 to Modern Niagara Vancouver Inc. for the work, with an expenditure limit set at $575,000.

The second contract awarded $505,575 to Mack Kirk Roofing and Sheet Metal Ltd. for roof replacement, with the expenditure limit set at $550,000.

The new roof is expected to be finished

by December.

Be a ‘long weekend hero’

D

id you know that even though every second Canadian is eligible to give blood, only one in 81 donates?

That’s according to Canadian Blood Services, which is looking for August “Long weekend heroes” in Surrey to donate blood, plasma and platelets.

The CBS says it needs more than 100,000 new donors each year to meet the demand. But in June, it reported that during the COVID-19 pandemic the number of regular donors dropped by roughly 31,000, the lowest turnout in a decade.

The CBS says summer months always present a challenge to get blood donations, but we all need to remember that the need doesn’t disappear with good weather.

“When some are enjoying cottage fun, cancer patients, accident victims and people with blood disorders are in need of lifesaving blood products,”

a recent CBS press release states.

Truly, none of us know when we might rely on the gift of life provided by selfless donors.

Surrey’s donation centre is located at Unit C2 15285-101 Avenue, where there are more than 400 appointments to fill at donation events slated for the following dates and times: Friday, July 29 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; Saturday, July 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; Monday, Aug. 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; Wednesday, Aug. 3 from 1 to 7 p.m.; Thursday, Aug. 4 from 12 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday, Aug. 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; and Saturday, Aug. 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Don’t back your horse and buggy into a parking spot – and other old no-nos Guest Column Monique Tamminga

A number of years ago I got a ticket for backing into a parking spot in New Westminster.

It turns out a bylaw dating back to the 1800s prohibits backing up your horse and buggy into a parking spot. I discovered this outdated law when I went down to the courthouse to find out why I got a ticket.

The overzealous bylaw officer who gave me the ticket knew full well that I was not driving a horse and buggy and this was not the

1800s. I fought the ticket in court and the judge couldn’t believe the law was still in the books.

There are all sorts of hilarious laws on the books in B.C. According to British Columbia Magazine, a law in Kelowna established in 1906 prohibited nude bathing but only in Okanagan Lake, and only between the hours of 6 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Non-compliant sunbathers risked 30 days in jail. This law has since been repealed.

In Nanaimo, drunken singing was illegal until a few weeks ago.

I wish I would have known that when I lived in a highrise at the Quay in New Westminster. Every Friday night, around 1 a.m., a man would happily zigzag down our

road singing opera, not very well, at the top of his lungs.

His voice would echo between the highrises, creating a booming impact.

Also in Nanaimo, a bylaw passed in 1896 that set the maximum speed one could ride a bicycle at eight miles per hour on streets and lanes and six miles per hour through intersections.

No mention of bike lane speed though!

It is still against the law to own a tiger in B.C. That’s probably a good law to keep.

In Esquimalt, it was prohibited to throw snowballs within city limits. To the joy of every child, this law is long gone.

It’s illegal to use a dog sled on a sidewalk in the town of Hay River in the Northwest Territories.

That one just makes sense.

One that is still on the books in Alberta is painting a wooden ladder actually goes against the province’s Occupational Health and Safety Code. The reason being is that the paint hides the age and condition of the ladder.

Be careful how you act when meeting the Queen. It’s against the law to frighten or alarm the Queen and that law has been in the books since 1842.

A jump scare of the Queen could land you 14 years in jail.

parks. Recently, B.C. created a rule that there is no smoking at beaches. Sadly, that one is being ignored, at least in the Okanagan.

I wish there was a law that would see loud muffler motorcycles being seized if they go through city limits and past restaurant patios.

I also wish there was a law that forced people to use their blinkers or not drive under the speed limit in the passing lane.

The best law of all would be to fine rude people to work 200 hours of customer service. Now that would be a great law.

14 in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver. The petition was launched by Surrey residents Annie Kaps, Debra Johnstone, Colin Pronger, Ivan Scott, Merle Scott and Linda Ypenburg, all members of Keep the RCMP in Surrey.

Lawyer Kevin Smith, representing the residents, argued at trial in Vancouver that the bylaw as amended on Oct. 18, 2021 presented an infringement on their freedom of expression under Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Kent concluded that the 2021 amendments gave rise to “an ambiguity in the bylaw that arguably prohibits the posting of political signage on private property except during limited specified periods of time, and that such a restriction would infringe s. 2(b) of the Charter which guarantees the petitioners’ constitutional protection for freedom of, among other things, their political expression.”

Rob Costanzo, Surrey’s general manager of corporate services, told council in a corporate report that the amendments “will not technically apply to signs for the upcoming municipal election by virtue of Section 56 of the Local Government Act, which effectively provides that any sign bylaw adopted after July 4, 2022, does not apply to the election.”

“Nevertheless,” Costanzo reported, “as the proposed amendments are simply intended to remove the ambiguity in the Sign By-law as identified by the Court, for the purposes of enforcement until the October 2022 municipal election, there is no difference between the current Sign By-law and the proposed amendments.”

Constanzo also stated the amendments before council are “consistent with the Court’s reasons for judgment.”

“In summary, outside of the election periods listed in Section 7.1(4), generally one political sign will be allowed

on a single-family residential lot without a permit, subject to some restrictions,” he reported to council.

“A person may apply for a permit to erect more than one sign or for a sign that otherwise does not comply with the requirements set out in Section 7(21). During the election periods listed in Section 7.1(4), there will be no limit on the number of political signs, subject to some requirements.”

Ivan Scott, one of the petitioners in the court case, expressed concern with Costanzo’s report.

“This is another ambiguity, is it not? In actual fact whatever comes out now doesn’t apply to our signs.

That’s what I see it as, and so therefore nothing changes. If that’s the clarification of the ambiguity, there’s no ambiguity any more as far as I see that we have carte blanche to say we can have as many of those signs on our lawns as possible. I mean, people are not going to put 10 or 15 or 20 signs on their lawn, that would be crazy.”

Smith, the petitioner’s lawyer, echoed Scott’s concern that the bylaw amendments continue to be ambiguous.

“My question would be why are they rushing this through? The issue with the bylaw the first time around was that they didn’t take time to read it through and identify the inconsistencies.”

Smith noted that the city was given three months to fix the bylaw.

“The concern would be that in trying to move with haste they are creating new ambiguities when they’re trying to resolve ambiguities.”

Locke raised similar concerns before the bylaw amendments were voted on.

She said the “rush to do the amendments” has resulted in “more ambiguity than there was previously.”

“I’m unclear why the political signs, that language was not removed,” she added.

“I think the court was pretty clear about what they wanted to see but I don’t think that the amendments captured the changes the court was looking at and I think in the end the amendments have actually made it more ambiguous than it was even before.”

Costanzo told council Monday the petitioners alleged the sign bylaw was adopted in bad faith and for an improper purpose and the city was attempting to ban political signs “outside of an election event.”

“The city argued against the allegations and stated that the sign bylaw amendments were not intended to be interpreted as banning political signs, so ultimately, and it’s in the reasons for judgment, it’s in black and white, the judge accepted the city’s arguments and concluded in his reasons for judgment that the petition to quash the amendments to the Surrey sign bylaw on grounds of bad faith or improper purpose be dismissed,” Constanzo told council.

Kent noted in his reasons for judgment that “these particular petitioners have been directly targeted by certain members of Surrey city council for special treatment; they were the subject matter of a (quickly and appropriately rescinded) bylaw prohibiting their attendance at council meetings and an injunction lawsuit seeking to enforce that bylaw. Their organization (KTRIS) has even been accused, wrongly it appears, of inflicting physical injury on the mayor.”

The July 25 council meeting was the last before council’s summer break.

Council’s next meeting is set for Sept. 19. After that, there will be one more meeting prior to the Oct. 15 civic election, set for Oct. 3.

Two Surrey men have been charged with first-degree murder in the July 24 double homicide of Satindera Gill and Meninder Dhaliwal in Whistler. Charged are Gursimran Sahota, 24, and 20-yearold Tanvir Khakh.

Sgt. David Lee, spokesman for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said three other people were arrested along with Khakh and Sahota and “the extent of their involvement is still being determined.”

The Sea-to-Sky Whistler RCMP, at about 12:19 p.m. on July 24, responded to shots fired at the Sundial Boutique Hotel in Whistler.

Gill and Dhaliwal were found dead.

Lee said Dhaliwal was from Langley and Gill was from Richmond, “but they could’ve moved elsewhere since last documented police contact.”

“Both men were known to police.

Two people were injured in a stabbing at a residence in Whalley last week.

Surrey RCMP Const. Gurvinder Ghag said it happened at about 3 a.m. Friday (July 22), in the 13000-block of 101B Avenue.

She said police found a man and woman with injuries consistent with stab wounds.

“First aid was rendered on scene, and both victims were transported to hospital, and are currently in stable condition,” Ghag said Friday.

“Early indications are that this incident stemmed from an altercation that preceded the stabbing.”

She said police canvassed the area, looking for CCTV and dash cam footage. A suspect had not yet been identified as of presstime.

Police ask anyone with information to contact the Surrey RCMP General Investigation Unit at 604-599-0502.

Mounties are looking for two thieves who swiped a bronze statue from a Surrey church.

The statue of St. Andrew Kim was taken from St. Andrew Kim Parish outside the Education Centre Building at

10222 161 Street in Guildford at 4:31 a.m. July 13. Const.

Sarbjit Sangha said a dolly was used to load it into a camper van.

The statue is two metres tall.

“It is difficult to make out a suspect description based on the current evidence. The investigation is ongoing and police are actively working to

identify the suspects,” Sangha said. “A theft of this nature goes beyond the monetary value, the statue has sentimental significance to the St Andrew Kim Parish. Investigators are actively working to locate the statue so that it can be returned to the Parish.

If anyone recognizes the suspects, suspect vehicle or knows

that whereabouts of the statue, we encourage you to contact police.”

For the first time in three years, Surrey Fusion Festival attracted thousands of people to Holland Park over the weekend, July 23 and 24.

It was the festival’s largest turnout in 15 years, according to the City of Surrey, although exact attendance is not recorded at the free-admission event.

The pandemic paused in-person versions of the festival in both 2020 and 2021.

The annual two-day event features music, food and culture from nations around the world, on multiple stages.

The festival’s 2022 theme “CommUNITY” was displayed at more than 40 cultural pavilions at the park. The pavilions, separated alphabetically by Argentina and Zimbabwe, are run by cultural groups and organizations from across Surrey and Metro Vancouver.

This year’s headliners included Surrey-raised R&B duo Manila Grey, plus Canadian hip-hop artist Shad, Indian-Punjabi singer Sharry Mann, Surrey’s Zora Randhawa and others.

Festival stages included World Music, Celebration, Unity, Siam, Cultural Cooking Arena, Community Dance, Global Beer and Wine Tasting, Family Fun, Storyville and Mindful Movement Space.

Presented by Coast Capital and produced by the City of Surrey, Fusion Festival is planned with the financial support of several corporate sponsors and media partners.

Cloverdale’s Gone Country concert raised a record amount of money on Saturday, July 23.

Close to $842,000 was collected during this year’s sold-out benefit concert, held at Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre for the first time since 2019.

“We don’t know how to put into words how good it felt to be back on the field this week,” event organizers posted to the Twins Cancer Fundraising page on Facebook.

“We will be back next year without a doubt.”

Langley twins Chris and Jamie Ruscheinski lead-organize the event, which has raised money for cancer-related causes over the past eight years with the help of an army of volunteers.

Changes were made to Vancouver’s PEAK radio station Monday (July 25).

The alt-rock station has moved to HD radio (HD2), and can still be heard on thepeak.fm and on streaming platforms.

On the FM dial, 102.7 has become a new station, NOW!radio, which offers a mix of conversation of pop music, new and old.

Owned by Pattison Media, The PEAK has been playing alternative rock for more than a decade, and was recently joined in that genre of music by SONIC, at 104.9.

Some PEAK hosts will remain, including Early Show voices Charis and Jeremy,

along with music director Jason Manning in afternoons.

“The music has always been what defines us and that is not changing,” stated a news release Friday.

“In fact, moving away from traditional FM means we have more freedom with our playlist and can get away with stuff others can’t. Hear your favourite Alt bands as well as discover new ones that you won’t hear on most stations. New Skybender spins in from Italy

Monsoon stage for Punjabi love story

In Vancouver, amusement park-goers lined up in throngs under the hot sun last Thursday (July 21) morning to be the first to try out Playland’s latest attraction: the Skybender.

Playland commissioned the $2.7-million stomach-dropping ride from a renowned Italian ride construction and design company known as Zamperla.

At 65 km/h, the Skybender is the fastest single-rider ride in Canada.

Playland spokesperson Laura Ballance said the attraction requires riders to be at least four feet tall, but that it appeals to all different age groups.

She joked that riders can always tell how serious a ride will be by whether there is a roof over the operator’s area.

Among amusement park staff, Ballance said a roof is an indication there could be some falling substances from the sky.

While most people know about Romeo and Juliet, this time it’s a story coming to Langley from across the oceans.

The heartbreaking love story of Mirza, the mightiest archer and Sahiban, a beautiful young maiden, is one of the most popular folk tales of Punjab, India.

The two who grew up together share millions of romantic moments find their love earns disapproval from their families. Rejecting the societal norms, Mirza challenges fate and rides straight to Sahiba’s house, and the couple decides to flee the village.

When death comes near, Mirza feels betrayed by Sahiban. But was that her intention for real?

The popular tale will be presented on stage as part of the seventh annual Monsoon Festival of the Performing Arts, being presented by the South Asian Arts Society. It’s offered at various Lower Mainland venues, including Langley.

The production, titled Dooja Ghar [The Other House]: A Mirza Sahiban Story, has a majority of its dialogues in English and the rest in Punjabi.

But playwrights Paneet Singh and Andy Kalirai said the context would be understandable to audiences.

“I feel like we all are storytellers, and this is a beautiful story to tell,” said Kandola, who is also part of a soon-to-be-released movie, Easter Sunday, starring Jo Koy. For Gurpreet Sian, South Asian Arts Society executive director and Monsoon Festival producer, the return of live theatre post-COVID is special.

“Our upcoming festival marks a return to live events, after what feels like an eternity. We’re sticking to our roots and presenting the premiere of a locally developed theatre piece,” he said.

With the festival kicking off with the play, the festival will also feature

free workshops, such as a Zoom writing session Aug. 10 and a session on art and business Aug. 17 in Vancouver, as well as dance lessons in Richmond on Aug. 7, 14 and 21.

The festival will wrap with an outdoor celebration in Vancouver’s historic Punjabi Market Aug. 21.

“The festival celebrates South Asian art in the world, offering a diversity of great programming options. Festival attendees will experience theatre, music and dance, a marketplace of visual art, dance classes, fascinating development workshops and more,” explained Sian.

Little League provincials in Whalley this week Admission is free to watch the games at Orest Springenatic Field Tom Zillich tom.zillich@surreynowleader.com

Whalley Little League plays host to the 2022 Major Provincials for eight days starting last Saturday (July 23).

The tournament involves three games a day at Orest Springenatic Field at Whalley Athletic Park, 106A Avenue and 133 Street, Surrey.

“We look forward to spirited competition among seven All-Star teams from six provincial districts,” says a post on Whalley Little League’s website.

In addition to host Whalley’s 12U squad, the teams represent Vancouver

West Side District 1 (Little Mountain), Fraser Valley District 3 (Langley), North Shore District 5 (Lynn Valley), Vancouver East Side District 6 (Trout Lake), Vancouver Island District 7 (Layritz) and Kootenays District 8 (Trail).

Following opening ceremonies at 10 a.m., Saturday’s first game saw Trout Lake take on Lynn Valley at noon, followed by Trail vs. Langley at 3 p.m. and then Little Mountain vs. Whalley at 6 p.m.

Whalley won that first game 3-2 over Little Mountain, but fell 9-5 to Trout Lake on Monday evening (July 25).

All this week, the host Whalley team plays games starting at 6 p.m., including matches against Langley (tonight) and Lynn Valley (Friday).

The tournament semi-final games are scheduled for Saturday, July 30, starting at noon and 3 p.m., with the championship game Sunday, July 31, starting at noon.

Scores and schedules are posted to the website whalleylittleleague.com.

Admission is free to watch the games.

Also, a full concession located at Orest Springenatic Field will be available during the tournament, which involved a “welcome BBQ” for players, coaches, umpires and family members on Sunday evening.

Last August, Whalley’s Little League baseball team won the provincial championship, but that’s where the road ended for the squad of 11- and 12-year-olds. The COVID-19 pandemic cancelled plans for the Canadian Little League championships for 2021 and, ultimately, a potential return for Whalley to the Little League World Series.

Whalley last earned a trip to Williamsport, PA, in the summer of 2018.

In August, this year’s Nationals will be played in Calgary, with the winner of that tournament earning a trip to the Little League World Series in Pennsylvania.

A team representing Surrey’s Birdies & Buckets Family Golf Centre won the Jack McLaughlin Memorial PGA of BC Pro-Junior Championship on Friday, July 22.

Played at Shuswap Lake Golf Course in Blind Bay, the tournament sees teams of one PGA of BC professional and three juniors in an 18-hole, two-net “best ball” format.

The Birdies & Buckets foursome, which included head teaching pro Jeff Hallborg and juniors Gavin Giesbrecht, Nathan Freer and Levi Hallborg, beat 12 other teams with a score of 14-under par.

After a slow start of 5-under par through their first 10 holes in the shotgun start, Birdies & Buckets found their stride on the Par 5 18th hole, where they recorded two net eagles that got their momentum going.

“It was the start of a dramatic finish, playing their final eight holes at 9-under par,” notes a news release posted to pgabc.org.

The juniors from Birdies & Buckets all had prior individual tournament experience, but had never played in a team format before.

“We ham-and-egged it perfectly,” the coach explained. “It never felt like we had a bad hole at the same time. (We) played their stroke holes very well. We had a couple of chip-ins on a stroke hole which helped.

They just teamed up well together, and they’re also good buddies, which helped.

They don’t really put much pressure on each other and had a couple of good laughs – that’s what it’s all about.”

The tourney’s team-scoring structure welcomes competitors of all ages and abilities, regardless of past playing experiences, with tee allocations and golf course setup being determined by a mix of the player’s gender, age and handicap.

For their win, the three

Birdies & Buckets juniors each received a COBRA LTDx Driver, valued at $650 each. The tournament is presented by COBRA PUMA Golf.

The tournament is held in memory of Jack McLaughlin, a former PGA of BC president and long-time head professional at Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club.

Hallborg’s career path has direct ties to the McLaughlin family. “My first employment job in the industry was underneath (Jack McLaughlin’s son) Jim McLaughlin at Westwood Plateau Golf & Country Club,” he stated, “so it’s kind of cool to have a trophy with that last name on it.”

Last played in 2019 at Highland Pacific Golf in Victoria, the tourney returned after a two-year pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Survived by brother, Gerald, sisters Elaine and Audrey, and 4 nieces, and many cousins.

In Loving Memory of Adrian Joseph Handfield June 27, 1957 – July 2, 2022 We are sad to announce the passing of Adrian after a lengthy struggle with COPD. He is survived by brother Bob (Margaret) and foster brother Scott (Darcy), nieces and nephews Laura, Tomas, Robert and Bethany, and cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Ada and Wilfrid, brother Don and foster brother Paul.

Adrian was adopted by Ada and Wilf Handfield at a very early age and welcomed into the family home in east Vancouver. Big brothers Bob and Don were in high school so Adrian was truly the baby in the family. Later the family moved to Surrey where Adrian was to spend most of his life except for a period in Williams Lake where he enjoyed many good days fishing with Don. Adrian had a real talent for music – he played drums for brother Don’s band. He also played guitar and could listen to a tune on the radio and then play it on the piano or organ that Ada and Wilf always had at home.

Adrian spent twenty years working for CN Railway but was forced into early retirement by disabilities. His favorite pastime was making dill pickles, faithfully following Ada’s pickle recipe. When illness made it difficult for him, friend Debbie came to his assistance, once helping him make a record fifty-seven quarts of dills. In his difficult last years, friend Rob, who he had known since high school, was also there to help with grocery shopping and such.

The later years of Adrian’s life were a struggle but his friends and family will remember his musical talent, his love of fishing and his joy at making and giving away really great dill pickles. Please visit www.

VISIT THE ‘FAIRY FOREST’ Redwood Park (17900 20th Ave., South Surrey) is home to the largest stand of Redwood trees north of the 49th parallel. It’s also home to thousands of tiny “fairy” houses placed in a clearing, not far from a replica of a treehouse once home to Peter and David Brown, twin brothers born to one of Surrey’s earliest pioneering families. In 1893, their father gifted them this large plot of land, logged and ripe for farming. However, the brothers instead filled the land with their favourite trees from around the world. The duo built a treehouse where they lived in solitude until their deaths in 1949 and 1958.

STROLL A RIVER’S SANDY BEACH Explore Brownsville Bar Park, which boasts one of the only sandy beaches on the Fraser River. Have a picnic on the green space next to the beach with views of New Westminster and the Fraser River. On the beach, kids can make sandcastles on sand, collect rocks or even play a game of soccer as trains roll by, SkyTrain cars zip overhead, and vehicles motor over the old Pattullo Bridge, to be replaced soon. Festivals celebrating the cultures and traditions of India and Jamaica will be held at Surrey’s Holland Park on the final weekend of July, on different days.

First up is the Festival of India, a free daylong event Saturday, July 30, from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

“The objective of the festival is to create awareness about Asian art, food, heritage, dresses, festivals and lifestyle,” explained Sanjeev Sharma, festival co-ordinator.

“This spectacular multi-generational presentation will connect today’s world with the wonders of 1,000 years of civilization, its ancient traditions and modern influences.”

The following day, on

Sunday, July 31, the Jamaica Day Festival will take place from noon to 7 p.m. at Holland Park, 13428 Old Yale Rd. “Come for a taste of all things Jamaica – food, games, music, craft and entertainment!” notes a Facebook event post. “Bring your picnic blankets, coolers, and concert chairs.”

The event is hosted by Jamaican Canadian Cultural Association of British Columbia.

In 2017, reggae music pumped during the 16th annual Jamaica Day Festival, which featured live and DJ-played music, games of dominoes, sack races, soccer, a bouncy slide and more.

Details about the Festival of India are posted to humarisanskriti.ca, the website of Sanskriti Cultural

Awareness Society of BC, and also on the City of Surrey’s website.

The annual festival aims to offer “a spectacular display of culture” including

In a fourth annual Battle of the Brews, an afternoon of beer tasting, food trucks and music is set for Sunday, Aug. 20 at Surrey Civic Plaza.

The charity event benefits Athletics 4 Kids and Surrey Fire Fighters’ Charitable Society youth initiatives.

From 1 to 5 p.m., attendees vote on their favourite beers to help decide Battle Of The Brews trophy winners, with sampling from souvenir glasses, games and raffle prizes.

The participating breweries this year include White Rock Beach Beer, Studio Brewing, Fernie, Four Winds, Steamworks, Driftwood, Moody Ales, Russell Brewing, KPU Brewing, Strathcona Brewing, Smuggler’s Trail Caskwork, Five Roads Brewing, Farm Country Brewing and
