s there any type of celebration that can truly recognize the resiliency that the business community has shown over the past three years or even in 2022?

The hurdles – the Byron humps, bumps and Hackett lumps they’ve battled with are unimaginable for most of us who don’t spend a lot of time thinking about how the food gets to our table at a restaurant or how the clothes end up on the rack at your favourite store.

It has been an extreme lesson in patience and perseverance for business owners and this year’s Best of Red Deer section is just a small way to show how much we appreciate all the effort they have put in to make this community a thriving one.

They’ve paused, they’ve adapted and in some instances, they’ve grown and that is just remarkable when you stop and think about the trials and tribulations over the past year.

The Best of Red Deer is a careful reminder to shop local and support local businesses, as they are the life-

blood of the community.

They support charities and local sports teams. They create employment opportunities across all aspects of the community and are often there to lend a helping hand when you need it.

This list is a wonderful opportunity for Central Albertans to expand their experiences in Red Deer. Maybe there is a brunch spot you’ve never heard of or a garden centre that can help freshen up your yard for the summer.

In addition to those businesses, we must extend our thanks to our dedicated readers, who voted fervently for businesses they would like to see celebrated and honoured in this section. Without you, this section doesn’t happen.

As we move forward in 2022 and people begin more and more to come together, we hope this section can be a jumping-off point for those experiences and unite the community that’s maybe been lost over the COVID-19 pandemic.

Red Deer proclaims 2022 the Year of the Garden of Red Deer

ime to break out the gardening gloves and spade — 2022 is the Year of the Garden in Red Deer.

The city is celebrating community gardening efforts in partnership with the Canadian Garden Council, and is working with local groups to give Red Deerians opportunities to learn about gardening, food production, landscaping, green spaces and more.

Mayor Ken Johnston, who put forward the idea to city council last year, said the benefit of gardening is that everyone can participate.

“I was just so happy we got behind it. This really has the potential to engage virtually everyone. You don’t need a big backyard to garden. You can get some planters for your condo or apartment. People don’t need to invest a lot,” Johnston said.

He said that just walking through city neighbourhoods, it is clear to see that many Red Deerians already take pride in their yards. Some come from farm families who have maintained their connection to the soil, and others are new who will find that gardening will find it’s a good way to get some exercise as well as reduce stress levels.

“There’s joy in gardening I don’t think you can find anywhere else,” Johnston said.

A calendar of Year of the Garden activities and events is available at reddeer.ca, along with information on rebate programs. Information on the website will be updated regularly so people are encouraged to visit the site often.

Phil Boehme, community development co-ordinator for environmental initiatives with the city, said the City of Red Deer and Red Deer County were the first municipalities in Alberta to join the Year of the Garden campaign.

In addition to planting their gardens, watering, weeding and harvesting, residents are encouraged to get out and visit the many parks and green spaces in the city this year.

“They don’t have to go too far to really enjoy some great outdoor spaces. In Red Deer, we’re blessed with so many of these beautiful areas. (Year of the Garden) was an opportunity to recognize those and just celebrate them,” Boehme said.

He said local groups have really gotten on board to promote the Year of the Garden, collaborate, celebrate the city’s natural resources, and build on what exists.

“This is kind of taking on a life of its own that will likely go beyond this year.”

Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery was first conceived 50 years ago

alf a century ago, a group of community-minded Red Deerians started a society to plan a museum and help preserve the area’s history.

The Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery (formerly the Red Deer and District Museum) would soon open its doors — and become more than a place to exhibit curios from the past.

Over the years, the structure first conceived in 1972 and built after a $206,000 fundraising campaign in 1978, has evolved into a true community hub, with mom and tots programs, community art classes, walking tours, summer day camps and more.

The museum’s staff and volunteers are now planning to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the museum society’s vision through a special exhibition that will kick off this fall as well as various activities throughout 2023.

Exhibits coordinator Kim Verrier feels the museum was established out of a sense of community pride.

The society’s founders — including indomitable volunteer Molly Banister — wanted to display local artifacts to be able to tell stories of the area’s history.

Among the farm implements, Victorian china and other surviving articles of pioneer life on the Prairies are some surprises: The Red Deer museum has among the largest textile collections in Western Canada, for example, as well as an array of Inuit art that was bequeathed by local resident Kathleen Anderson Swallow, a former doctor at Michener Centre.

Visitors, as well as newcomers to central Alberta, routinely come to the

Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery to get a feel for where this community came from, said Verrier.

“It gives us a sense of history, a sense of place…. It gives voice to people, to experiences and we want to make sure we have more of those stories as we go forward.”

Part of the museum’s mandate is also to provide a display space for artists, both local and from further afield.

Two current exhibits are examples of both: In Adoration of the Precarious Bee is an exhibit of ceramics by Red Deer artist Dawn Detarando that runs to Aug. 20; In a gallery next door are sculptural collages made by Edmonton-based artist Lyndal Osborne out of collected materials found on the shores of Newfoundland and New

South Wales, Australia.

Verrier feels both artists make statements about the perils of environmental degradation and need to preserve nature.

Summer is coming — and it’s the busiest time at the museum. While Mini MAG drop-in activities program for tots under age 5 will wrap up on June 29, MAG Saturdays will continue to offer family arts programs from 1 to 4 p.m. weekly. “It’s for people from two to 102,” said Verrier.

Kid’s day camps will start up, as will Sunday afternoon adult art programs, including a June 12 encaustic collages demonstration.

The museum is also starting Downtown Walking Tours of historic places and Ghost sculptures on Wednesdays and Saturdays from June 4 and 8.

Red Deer woman joins federal Page Program of Red Deer

A

Red Deer woman will be working in the House of Commons through the federal government’s Page Program.

Elena Bakker, who will graduate from Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School in June, will be studying psychology at the University of Ottawa this upcoming year.

While studying, she is also participating in the Page Program, which takes 40 first-year students registered at eligible post-secondary institutions in the national capital region.

The students work on a part-time basis for one year and support members of Parliament by providing a range of services.

“We help them out however we can with a bunch of tasks. It can be things like bringing them briefcases or bringing them water, as well as support outside of the chamber,” Bakker explained.

The 18-year-old Red Deerian learned about the program through Lindsay Thurber principal Chris Good.

“Mr. Good recommended it to me in Grade 11 and I’ve been interested ever since. I’ve always had a big interest in politics so this seemed like a really cool opportunity to me,” said Bakker.

Bakker said she was “so excited” to be accepted into the program.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9 “I’m also a little scared. It’s a big move and Ottawa’s vastly different from Alberta I’m sure. But I’m still really excited about it and I can’t wait to go,” she said.

Pages begin their training in August. Bakker said depending on how much she learns from the program, she could see herself changing her major from psychology to something like political science.

Bakker currently serves as student council president for Lindsay Thurber.

“Having spent so much time as student body president, working extra curricular (events) and whatnot, it’s been really helpful because I’ll be working as a full-time student, along with a part-time job in a really fast-paced environment,” she said.

“Having that ability to multitask, manage my life and balance things will be really helpful for me.”

Project Linus delivering comfort one blanket at a time

indalu Forseth has seen how much a simple handmade blanket can mean to those whose world has been turned upside down.

When a Didsbury family lost their home to a fire recently, the Central Alberta Chapter co-ordinator for Project Linus Canada made sure three children, aged 12, 10 and 18 months were comforted with gifted blankets. “(The children’s mother) sent me

“Those are the stories that make it worthwhile,” said Forseth, a longtime quilt maker herself.

those from infants to age 18. Some may have experienced a loss in their life, or are fighting health battles or other challenges in life. Children moving to a new foster care home, or who are fleeing another country, such as Ukraine, can also find a source of support through the organization.

Project Linus is named after the beloved Peanuts character, who was

never seen without his trusty blue security blanket.

The Central Alberta chapter of Project Linus was started up only a few weeks ago. It is the sixth Alberta chapter and covers an area from Red Deer to Carstairs, as far west as Water Valley and as far east as Delburne and Three Hills.

Dozens of blankets have already been donated. A widower, whose late wife had been an accomplished quilt maker, donated 30 examples of her handiwork.

Blankets will be going to the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre and Chinook’s Edge Victim’s Services in the next few days.

Handmade blankets of all styles are welcomed, including quilts, fleece blankets, crocheted or knitted afghans and receiving blankets. Blankets must be new, handmade and washable and made from new fabric and acrylic yarns. Wool is not accepted because so many people have allergies to it.

The local chapters could especially use smallto medium-sized blankets.

That each blanket is handmade is important because each recipient knows that someone who cares was out there with their knitting or crochet needles, sewing machine, or needles and thread creating something designed to bring comfort.

Besides donations and volunteer “blanketeers”, Forseth is also looking for more sponsors. She has been able to use her skills as a former commercial leasing salesperson to line up a number of sponsors already but can always use more.

“I’m not afraid to cold call,” she says with a laugh.

Volunteers willing to act as drop-off centres would also be welcomed. She is also organizing a raffle so people can win some of the quilts or blankets that are a little big for their needs, such as large queen- or king-size versions.

No donated blankets go unused. Those that cannot be used by Project Linus are donated to animal shelters to comfort their furry residents.

Forseth is also looking to open up another chapter that serve the region north of Red Deer as far as Edmonton.

City Hall bathed in colour for celebration, recognition

G

reen lights shined across Canada on June 3 — including outside Red Deer City Hall — in recognition of Boys and Girls Clubs on national BGC Day. Local Youth HQ executive director Rob Lewis said city hall, as well as two downtown alleys, glowed in green light starting at sunset, just like the CN Tower in Toronto and other landmark structures across the country.

The new LED lights directed at the city building were installed on the edge of City Hall Park during recent renovations. Since 2021 the new lights have been used to support local, national and international events and campaigns.

Lewis said almost 800 youth are involved in Boys and Girls Club programs and camps in Red Deer and the surrounding area. Programs were run virtually during the pandemic but are now held in-person.

“The staff are happy to be doing their jobs the way their jobs are designed to be done again, getting out to clubs and having fun with kids,” said Lewis who was grateful for the city’s support to light up City Hall and the alleys on BGC Day.

Charities, non-profit organizations and city departments can request the lighting of City Hall.

Those groups, as well as local businesses, can also make requests to light up 49.5 and 50.5 Alleys, two downtown alleys that run parallel to Ross Street.

“It’s a great opportunity to support events, whether they be national or local, and use it to build community,” said acting city clerk Jackie Kurylo.

“The lights are quite visible when you’re driving or walking downtown at night.”

During 2021 the city received 22 applications for the lighting program, and 19 so far in 2022.

The lights shine from sundown to sunrise. Up to three solid colours can be requested, or a rainbow pattern.

Bard on Bower continues outdoor theatre tradition

S

ince 2010, the show has pretty much always gone on at Red Deer’s Bard on Bower outdoor Shakespearean festival.

Although pleasantly warm summer evenings have been occasionally interrupted by showers, the actors have valiantly carried forth, and audience members (unfurling umbrellas) have stayed to watch the stage action unfold on the Bower Ponds outdoor stage.

Only flashes of lightning, COVID-19, and a health advisory about excess smoke from last summer’s wildfires have managed to temporarily halt the theatrical proceedings.

Mosquitoes worries?

Forget about it. Prime Stock Theatre’s artistic director Richard Beaune said central Alberta’s mozzies have nothing on the hordes of flying bloodsuckers he’s had to ensure while putting on Summer Stock Shake-

speare in Prescott, Ont., near the St. Lawrence River.

“They are so plentiful over there,” he added, that it doesn’t do to dwell on our smaller swarms.

This summer, Prime Stock Theatre’s Bard on Bower will be back — hopefully with plenty of sun and very few mosquitoes — to present the comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream as well as the tragedy Richard II. The ever-popular comedy that kicks off on July 9 will tell the story of meddling fairies who wrongly pair up four Athenian lovers.

Beaune said A Midsummer Night’s Dream is set in a fantasy world where an Athenian duke is preparing to marry an Amazonian queen, while another couple’s love story is thrown off course by a fairy named Puck, who applies magic to play a trick on the fairy queen.

More intrigue — but this time of the political variety — will be seen when Richard II comes to the outdoor stage on July 15.

Beaune said it was the parallels that can be drawn from Alberta’s and Canada’s political scenes these days that made this play, about a king who ticks off his nobles and falls from grace, a timely choice.

Real-life connections with the Richard II plot “were one of the reasons the play was pitched to me,” admitted Beaune, with a chuckle ”The story is very current in Alberta and right across Canada… (Discussion about) what makes a good leader is very current.”

In years to come, Beaune said he would like to expand Bard on Bower’s audience beyond Red Deer, or even central Alberta.

He envisions a day when people from Calgary will decide to meet up with their friends from Edmonton to jointly enjoy Red Deer’s cultural offerings.

Red Deer is a community of great character

A

s we emerge from our pandemic inflicted retreat from a normal world it is natural that our institutions, communities and businesses spend time reflecting on what Scott has changed and what Robinson these last two years mean for the future.

Almost 100 years ago a major worldwide pandemic changed a generation forever. If you read about the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1919-20 in history books you will see the uncanny similarities of how society responded, endured, and conquered.

As was the case in the early 1900s, we entered the COVID-19 pandemic really unprepared and unaware of the impacts and disruption on a global scale we would experience. It took several years to emerge out of the Spanish Flu Pandemic, and we are seeing the same for COVID-19. So, what did we learn this time around?

Many lessons and areas we can improve our institutions, health care systems and policies of course. But we also learned something about ourselves as a community.

Throughout the pandemic, we saw acts of great courage, compassion, community and care of our neighbors, our families, and our friends. It is this spirit in times of difficulty and uncer-

tainty that we get to see the real character of a community.

Red Deer is a community of great character, and it is in this character that will shape our future, recover and renew. It reminds me of the book A Beautiful Constraint, How to transform your limitations into Advantages written by Adam Morgan and Mark Barden.

In this intriguing book, Morgan and Barden write about how challenges actually create greater opportunity and those challenges are a form of constraint that actually help us to drive innovation, common effort and collaboration. In times of struggle and hardship is sown the seeds of great character, resolve and reflection. COVID-19 has been a period of constraint and character-revealing for sure. Red Deer has stood out as one of those places where the constraints placed upon it by the pandemic are simply the platform for us to demonstrate our great character as a community.

So what are the character traits of our community? What has the pandemic revealed as our greatest and most common traits for us to build upon for our future. Here is my list: Red Deerians are optimistic. There is an energy and hopefulness for our

future. More people see the future of Red Deer as limitless and up to our own control. Though there is much that can be improved in our community from a policy and direction point of view, most feel that we have endless opportunity. Through a positive approach and persistent reflection, we can get done what we need and ensure that our community is delivering great value for all citizens.

Red Deerians are kind and welcoming. Is there any better example of this than how our frontline workers have performed over the last two years? Through the most challenging of circumstances, in crisis and even times of danger our frontline workers, as part of their role and in order to serve the public were nothing short of kind, compassionate and empathic towards each other. If this has not defined us as a community, I am not sure who or what does.

Red Deerians are resilient. Adaptation and rethinking are the hallmarks of resiliency. Red Deerians are not afraid of change. They realize the world is changing around us and are driven to be apart of that new future.

This requires great leadership and a collaborative spirit. Today we have fresh and emerging leadership that will help us be ready for our future.

Red Deerians are forward-thinking. We are at a time of renewal. Coming out of any crisis or world event things have changed. Throughout history, whether it has been following a pandemic or world wars the ground shifts and there becomes new light and different patterns and products that communities must now adapt to.

This is of course overwhelmingly is a good thing. The challenges we face today whether it be employment, supply chain, inflation or world events are damaging and foster a process of renewal, reflection and ultimately drive innovation or collective collaboration. It is through these processes that we evolve and renew.

As we reemerge into our community and attend events and meeting “in person” we can see the elements of our community character in plain view.

COVID-19 is a terrible and deadly pandemic that has made our lives, our businesses, and our social structures struggle and in some cases crumble.

We have endured a lot in the last twoplus years and many have suffered.

Today, we look at that struggle considering other world events and realize that as bad as it has been we remain one of the most fortunate places on earth here in Red Deer. It is the character of our community that gives us this perspective and it is also our character that will lead us towards and even brighter future.

The theme of the competition was Back to the 80s and when Andrea Tucker-Hutch decided to focus on the mega-hit movie, she poured liquid resin into a mold made from spray foam to make a frame that looked like the ectoplasm ooze that splattered the heroes.

“It’s my crazy one,” said Tucker-Hutch about the lit frame that glows green and features a Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man. “I like messing with new materials.

It’s such a different way of making a frame and many people were very interested in the process,” said the owner of Curiosity Art & Framing.

She said some people look at it and say it’s not a frame, but it’s just not a traditional frame, and that’s what many like most about it.

“Specialty ones like this allow me to try something new. It allows me to work with a different medium. It allows me to experiment, and if it turns

She said wooden frames have been around for centuries, and new materials are being developed all the time.

Unusual frames also draw people in and can start a conversation, she said.

“Especially coming out of COVID, you want people to start talking to each other.”

Tucker-Hutch actually shipped her frame to Britain back in February 2020 and intended to be at awards ceremony that spring when COVID-19 struck.

The competition finally went forward this year, and last month she received an email that her frame was chosen one of the top five, and she attended the lavish gala ceremony on May 14.

While Tucker-Hutch did not win the guild’s framing challenge, she is likely the first North American to become a finalist.

“There are very few organizations that have been around as long as the Fine Art Trade Guild and it’s nice to be recognized by them in any way, shape or form.”

Next year the theme for the competition is Casino Royale, and Tucker-Hutch already has some ideas.

“My brain going a thousand miles a minute.

“Now my goal is not to just be a finalist. My goal is to turn around and become the winner.”

Food truck owners enjoying tasty career change

T

he oilpatch’s loss has become Red Deer foodies’ gains.

“I spent 25 years in the oilfield,” said Rod Wild, who owns Roly Guacamole with his wife Heidi. “And I was very grateful for the work and grateful for the paycheque and having a job to support my family, whereas cooking didn’t.

“Now, I really like doing this. I mean nobody goes, ‘Man, I can’t wait to serve up some heavy oil’ — right? It just doesn’t happen,” says Wild with a laugh.

“But I’m really proud of the product we serve here.”

That product is hand-crafted corn tortilla pork carnitas, ancho cumin chicken or black bean tacos, and quesadillas.

“Last year was our first season and we learned a lot. We’ve been getting our footing and it’s been fun,” he said.

He also has another non-mobile pizza takeout business called Tomato Static Pizza at 524 Laura Ave. in Gasoline Alley, where he offers hand-tossed thin crust pizzas.

“So, I do pizzas out of there in the wintertime and tacos out of the truck in the summer.

We shut the pizza side down in the summer.”

Both businesses are family operations, with son Jackson and daughter Chloe pitching in when they can.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 30 Wild said all of their tacos and quesadillas have gone over well with customers. On a recent Friday at Capstone, where the food trucks are setting up this year after two years at Westerner Park, he was sold out of pretty much everything by the time the lunch rush was over.

His personal favourite? He admits he has a soft spot for his pork carnitas, which means “little meats” in Spanish, and is made from pork simmered for hours and seasoned until it is melt-in-your-mouth tender.

“The pork is near and dear to me. I ordered up a hand-hammered queso, which is a traditional copper cooking vessel they use in Michoacán, which is sort of the epi-centre of canitas. It’s as traditional as I can make it.”

Parked just down the road from Wild was another longtime energy industry worker who has reinvented themself.

Rhonda Klaus has been running 3 Pink Flamingoes for four years after spending many years in oil industry sales.

When the oil downturn hit, she left and took stock of what her next career move would be.

“I stayed home for about six months and I really thought I need to do something fun, something that I can do during the summer and head to Mexico during the winter.”

So, 3 Pink Flamingoes was born,

“We have perogies with a twist.

We have a basic cheese and potato perogie, but it’s our toppings that are really unique.

For instance, The Ukrainian comes with Ukrainian sausage, on-

ions, bacon, sour cream and sauerkraut. The Greek comes with tzatziki sauce, Greek salad and dressing, and feta cheese. The Mexican comes with chorizo salsa, sour cream, quacamole, cheese, French dressing, black olives and jalapenos.

The menu also includes perogies topped with homemade dill sauce, a

perogie skewer, grilled chicken wrap, and a breakfast burrito.

“It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it at the end of the summer,” she said.

“This year, we are booked solid for the season so I think it’s going to be a fantastic year. All of the events are opening back up again.”

Cam Moon living his dream calling Oilers games

or more than 20 years, Cam Moon was the voice of the Red Deer Rebels.

The long-time play-byplay man began announcing for the city’s WHL club in 1998, after three seasons with the Nanaimo Clippers of the BCHL. The Edmonton native has since taken his commentating skills to the big leagues by becoming the Edmonton Oilers radio announcer. He got the job at the beginning of the 20202021 season.

“Honestly it’s a dream come true. I know it’s a cliché, but it’s the absolute truth,” Moon said.

“As someone who grew up in Edmonton and watched the Oilers, … having the opportunity to come back here and work at this capacity is amazing. My expectation level was pretty high and it’s definitely exceeded that.”

In just two seasons, Moon said he has already experienced many highlights.

“Mostly this season because we had actual fans (in the building) and we were able to travel,” Moon said.

His first season was shortened, Canadian teams were only able to play

each other and rinks weren’t full of fans due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I feel like this season gave me more of a true NHL experience. Last season was just bizarre for everybody: players, fans, support staff, broadcasters. It was all pretty weird,” he said with a laugh.

Moon isn’t calling Oilers games during the playoffs, but he is staying busy.

“I’ve been doing some stuff on the radio’s pre-game show, stuff on Oilers TV and some things in-house during the intermission,” he said, adding it’s been fun to be part of the second-round series between the Oilers and Calgary Flames.

While Moon lives in Edmonton during the season, his wife still works and lives in Red Deer. His daughter teaches as well and his son plays baseball in Europe. Moon said it’s exciting to be able to call professional hockey while being so close to home.

The time he spent with the Rebels organization flew by, he added.

“It was 22 seasons and it felt like 20 minutes,” he said.

“When I first went there, I was hired by Wayne and Terry Simpson. They sold the team to Brent and Connie Sutter, who were so good to me. They made me feel like part of the family which made it so fun to work there,” he said.

Watching the team evolve was fun as well, said Moon.

“You have the ups and downs.

There are some good seasons and some not-so good seasons. But that’s all the ebb and flow of the WHL. You’re going to have ups and downs,” he said.

“Great fans, some memorable evenings at the rink. It really was outstanding.”

Moon was in Red Deer recently to watch the Rebels host the Edmonton Oil Kings in Game 4 of their WHL Playoff series at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

“That was the first time I’ve seen a game there and not worked it. That was the first time I ever came to the rink where I’m watching a playoff game just to watch a playoff game. It was a very bizarre feeling.”

As examples, Red Deer Polytechnic supports Alberta’s vibrant creative arts and culture sector by offering programs such as film and animation degrees. We create opportunities for graduates in technology and business sectors by offering diverse programming, including new programs focused on computer programming and machine learning analysis. RDP’s various health programs position our institution’s graduates to meet the demand for healthcare workers today, and to meet the anticipated increased demand for more healthcare professionals with the $1.8 billion dollar hospital expansion planned for Red Deer. Learners can enroll in many other diverse subject areas, including arts, education, sciences and skilled apprenticeship training.

For 57 years, our post-secondary institution was proudly known as Red Deer College. We remain true to our roots by celebrating our relationships and integration in the city and central Alberta, while embracing a bold and exciting future as Red Deer Polytechnic. This journey to our new post-secondary model took many years, and we are extremely grateful for the support from central Albertans. Our mission remains steadfast as a post-secondary institution of choice supporting everyone in our region.

The Class of 2022 represents the first graduates since we became Red Deer Polytechnic. They will join an esteemed list of more than 80,000 alumni, of whom we are very proud, and who make a profound impact as leaders and innovators.
