Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum’s first date in Surrey provincial court Tuesday on a charge of public mischief lasted all of three minutes, with no plea taken.

Special Crown prosecutor Richard Fowler told courtroom 101 he plans to proceed summarily and asked that the matter be put over to Feb. 22, at 9:30 a.m.

“We have no intention today of taking a plea,” Fowler said.

Defence lawyer Lee Vandergust appeared on behalf of McCallum’s counsel, Richard Peck, QC. Fowler said disclosure was provided to defence counsel on Jan. 21.

“There may be some public interest in this case so I’ve moved it into the biggest courtroom we’ve got here in Surrey that has a seating capacity of 16,” Hamilton explained.

McCallum is charged with one count of public mischief contrary to Section 140(2) of the Criminal Code.

The information, sworn on Friday, Dec. 10, stems from a bizarre encounter last September between McCallum and campaigners who were gathering petition signatures outside the South Point Save-On-Foods store in South Surrey for a referendum on the policing transition that resulted in the mayor claiming a car ran over his foot.

Hot on the heels of the charge being laid came demands for McCallum’s resignation as mayor and chairman of the Surrey Police Board. Many Surrey residents have expressed outrage that Surrey taxpayers are on the hook for his legal bills.

Surrey Police Vote, which campaigned unsuccessfully for a referendum on Surrey’s policing transition to the Surrey Police Service from the Surrey RCMP – a transition which McCallum has championed – are calling on the mayor to publicly disclose his legal bills related to this mischief charge.

“This is huge matter of public interest and concern,” said Surrey Police Vote campaign strategist Bill Tieleman. “Legal fees in general are not cheap and the

In 1995, a charge of theft under $5,000 was stayed by the Crown against former Surrey mayor Don Ross, who at age 64 was arrested by a security guard for allegedly pocketing a rubber washer from a Surrey Lumberland Store on Fraser Highway.

He pleaded not guilty. Ross was Surrey’s mayor from 1979 to 1987. He died in 2001.

Also in 1995, a provincial court judge fined former Surrey mayor Ed McKitka $23,000 for dumping Blue Box recyclables on farm fields in Cloverdale. In 1977, a judge ordered McKitka to pay $5,000 in damages and legal costs for “wanton and irresponsible slander,” and in 1980 he was convicted of breach of trust and was sentenced to three years in prison.

McKitka served for nine years on Surrey municipal council and was mayor for one term before being defeated by Bill Vogel, in November 1977, for the mayor’s chair. McKitka died in 2014 at age 79, when his Jeep went off Highway 1 near the Vedder Canal in a single-vehicle crash.

Surrey woman, 102, featured on new Canada Post stamp Surrey’s Eleanor Collins, Canada’s ‘first lady of jazz,’ was among first Black artists in North America to host national TV series

Collins made her last concert appearance in Vancouver when she was in her mid-90s.

In 2017, the last time the Now-Leader caught up with Collins, she was aged 98 and living in the Guildford area.

“I have a beautiful view of the mountains,” she said a phone interview. “It’s spectacular.”

When Collins received a Member of the Order of Canada in 2014, it took some convincing for her to attend the ceremony in Ottawa.

Surrey man wins $1M After Eric Emery won $1 million in a Lotto 6/49 draw on Christmas Day, his wife couldn’t quite believe it.

The Surrey resident bought the winning ticket in Langley, at a 7-Eleven store on 200 Street, and he later checked it at a nearby Shoppers Drug Mart.

“Every Monday, my wife asks me, ‘Did you make me a millionaire?’ I knew she would ask me again when I got home and…I told her that I won a million dollars,” Emery said in a release.

It took a few minutes for Emery’s wife to believe him, and she even told him to quit joking around.

“When she realized I was serious, she started crying.”

“You know, they were giving me an award for something that happened quite some time ago in my life,” Collins said in 2017. “I’m not a singer anymore, I’m not on TV anymore, I’m not this and I’m not that. But my family said to me, ‘Mom, it’s something special, you should go,’ and I did.… In the end I was glad I went, and it was magnificent.”

Collins’ story is told in the book “They Desire a Better Country: The Order of Canada in 50 Stories,” written by Lawrence Scanlan for Figure 1, a Vancouver-based publisher.

Time to put sick notes to rest

S

hould you really need to get a sick note for your boss, especially these days?

We don’t think so. And neither do the Doctors of BC, which is once again asking employers across the province to stop asking for sick notes.

The plea, coming from an association of 14,000 physicians, residents and medical students, echoes similar asks from the province’s top health officials.

Doctors of BC has been advocating for the end to sick notes for eight years.

And for good reason.

“Sick notes place an unnecessary burden on the health-care system particularly during the

Omicron surge,” said president Dr. Ramneek Dosanjh.

We agree with Dr. Dosanjh when he says that with critical staffing shortages, we should ensure that physicians and their teams spend their time with patients who need medical care and attention, not writing sick notes.

The missive from the organization, mirrored by one from BC Family Doctors, has added weight in 2022, when all fulltime, part-time and casual employees are eligible for five paid sick days.

“BC Family Doctors believes sick notes place an unnecessary burden on the health-care system at a time when physicians are ad-

dressing the biggest public health challenge of our time,” the organization, which represents family doctors in B.C., stated.

Not only is it a burden on the health-care system, what about the person who is sick? Many of us have been there – sick in bed for days, struggling to even have a shower, let alone drive ourselves to the clinic, simply to get a doctor’s note.

The provision of a sick note is not a medically necessary service – that’s why patients are often charged a fee for one.

Our province’s doctors are asking us to stop bothering them with sick notes. We should listen.

A series of skirmishes over heights was underway at the time the report went to Surrey council, and the end result is that buildings are now restricted to 12 storeys and a height of 40 metres in White Rock.

Semiahmoo Residents Association has a number of concerns about the proposed plan, with high rises and higher densities being the most significant. The plan also calls for a “transition zone” next to the highrises, with heights up to 12 storeys. SRA would also like to see lower buildings with more of a green focus.

The association is also concerned about traffic and makes the logical point that rapid transit along 152 Street in South Surrey and White

Rock is highly unlikely. Increased density in the area, with no transit beyond rapid buses, will mean much more congestion and increased parking challenges.

The future of Semiahmoo Mall is an open question which the plan does not really address. Obviously, the property owner has a lot to say about that, and an application for three towers on the mall property is already a possibility. With most of the property zoned for highrises, where will the current shops and offices go? Some will certainly relocate to the lower floors of highrises, which will become commercial space, but the future of retail in the area is murky.

A statistic from the 2020 corporate report is significant. At that time, 35 per cent of the population of the area was over 65 – almost three times more than the Surrey average of 14 per cent. Thirty-seven per cent were single-person

households. Many of these people, particularly as they get older, don’t drive or do very little driving. They walk to shops, medical offices and other service-oriented businesses.

Right now that is pretty easy, with a one-storey mall and moderate traffic (away from 152 Street) making pedestrian travel fairly safe. Increased densities, high-rises and the scattering of existing businesses will make that more difficult.

One good recommendation of the plan is to increase medical-oriented development in the area north of 16 Avenue, adjacent to Peace Arch Hospital.

The plan raises a lot of questions, and council may want to be sure it has answers to them before endorsing it wholeheartedly.

Since IHIT took over investigating homicides from the Surrey RCMP’s serious crimes section in June 2003 it has to date cleared 144 of the total 257 homicide cases it has investigated in Surrey.

That is a clearance rate of 56 per cent.

These cases, IHIT told the Now-Leader, “have been cleared by charge, recommended charge, or cleared otherwise.”

Surrey has recorded one homicide to date in 2022, on Jan. 9.

The city had 10 homicides in 2021 and 12 in 2020. In 2019 there were 21. In 2018 there were 15 homicides and the most Surrey recorded in any given year was 25 in 2013, breaking the previous record of 21 in 2005.

Surrey Mounties are seeking witnesses to the assault of a woman and her one-year-old child in Newton on Dec. 15. People with info are asked to contact police at 604599-0502.

Const. Sarbjit Sangha said at 11:17 a.m. that day, the woman and child were assaulted by a man as they waited to cross the street near 7474 120 St. “The man, who is unknown to both victims, allegedly uttered threats and then assaulted the mother and child. Bystanders held the man until police arrived and arrested him,” Sangha said.

She added that while the mother and child didn’t sustain serious physical injuries both were “very emotionally distressed by the incident.”

The suspect was held in custody and a report has been submitted to the BC Prosecution Service.

Great things are happening in the downtown Newton core area.

CSP works in collaboration with RCMP, Surrey By-Law, and Surrey Crime Prevention to achieve the goal of creating a safer Newton Town Centre for all.

Some concerts, plays, comedy and other shows in Surrey have been cancelled or postponed due to health concerns and also B.C.’s current pandemic restrictions that cut theatre capacities in half.

by Canadian comedian/social activist Mary Walsh, who was set to perform at Surrey Arts Centre’s Main Stage on Feb. 12.

Another of Surrey Civic Theatres’ “Winter Shows,” a concert by the French-Canadian band The Lost Fingers on Feb. 9, has also been cancelled at the Main Stage.

“What we’re running into is, very simply, artists who have some very grave and legitimate concerns about travelling at this time,” said Kent Gallie, Surrey’s manager of performing arts.

“The Lost Fingers have cancelled their western tour, as has Mary Walsh,” Gallie added. “There were some concerns for her safety while touring, obviously. Coming out from Newfoundland and having to tour around the West Coast was, I think, making her feel quite nervous. I get it, not wanting to travel around on airplanes and being around so many people.”

On Tuesday (Jan. 18), the B.C. government extended to Feb. 16 a health order limiting capacity in theatres and stadiums to 50 per cent, among other measures to battle infection from the Omicron

Burnaby-based artist Kalyani Phadke will speak at the Bear Creek-area gallery on Feb. 3, starting at 7:30 p.m., in a talk titled “Mandala— The Art of Mindfulness.”

“The magic of mandala art lies in the process of creating it,” Phadke explained.

“Mandala became my best friend during the pandemic.

Its intricate nature might seem strenuous and difficult in the beginning, but it is quite the opposite. You get

into the flow easily by following a rhythm, repeating patterns, and extrapolating your imagination.”

‘Community Treasures’ wanted The Museum of Surrey is looking for more Community Treasures collaborative exhibits, which offer “a space for community partners to tell their own stories,” according to a post on surrey.ca.

The museum partners with community groups and cultural organizations in Surrey and the surrounding areas to “showcase their treasures and share their stories with a wider audience.”

Proposals are now accepted for 2023.

“Whether your community is united by ancestral heritage or by video games, your idea is welcome,” the webpost says. “Community Treasures is a space dedicated to the diverse and talented curators that live within all of us.”

There is no cost for groups to have their exhibit run. The museum also helps each group through the process by outlining what the museum and the community group is responsible for and by coming up with a timeline.

She is predeceased by her grandparents Fabian Javier and Fausta Austria; her parents Fernando and Teodora Elepano; and her siblings Lydia, Romeo and Antonio.

While the most challenging days of COVID-19 are predicted to be ahead for British Columbia’s health-care system, representatives for doctors and nurses say their members are on the verge of a possible collapse.

Doctors of BC president Dr. Ramneek Dosanjh said it has been an overwhelming three years for her members.

“I am hearing from some doctors who are just ready to quit,” she said in an interview.

The organization represents 16,000 physicians in the province.

“People have shared their honest feelings with me and they’re feeling so consumed.

They’re emotionally exhausted. They’re feeling depleted,” she said.

“They’re seeing their patients suffer.

They’re also under such constraints.”

Aman Grewal, president of the BC Nurses Union, said nurses are under “incredible pressure” to balance family and work responsibilities, which doesn’t leave them with enough downtime to take care of themselves.

“They are facing verbal and physical harassment from some members of the public who are becoming increasingly frustrated with this ongoing public health crisis,” she said. The organization represents 48,000 nurses.

“This, you know, has been an ongoing issue – violence toward nurses and it’s very morally distressing to know that our members are having to face that all while they are trying to care for their patients.”

“A lot of people are seeing patients from 8 a.m. till 8 at night and then doing the paperwork.

The days are usually very long for most physicians.”

BC Emergency Health Services said the number of staff absences last year on Jan. 4 was 38, Jan. 5 was 39, Jan. 6 and 7 was 33, Jan. 8 was 36 and Jan. 9 was 32. This year on Jan. 4 it was 69, Jan. 5 was

52, Jan. 6 was 70, Jan. 7 was 49, Jan. 8 was 53 and Jan. 9 was 41.

The emergency health services, which employs 4,000 paramedics and dispatchers in B.C., said there were 33 people off sick on Jan. 6 last year, while 70 people were ill this year.

Vancouver Coastal Health said in a statement its hospitals mirror what’s happening in the communities, which means they are still seeing COVID-19 cases.

Fraser Health said all emergency departments are fully operational, and while they are seeing an increased number of sick calls due to COVID-19, operational teams have a plan in place to mitigate against impact on staff and access to care.

No staff who have knowingly tested positive for COVID-19 have been called into work, said a statement from the health authority.

Grewal said there are not enough resources to help nurses deal with their own mental well-being amid the increasing fatigue, anxiety and relentless slog starting to take its

toll.

A nurse working four shifts in a row might have seen one death before the pandemic, she said.

“And here these nurses are seeing several deaths and several deaths of patients who are their age.

They’re not elderly who are always the ones who are dying,” she said.

“You know, our nurses are humans as well.”

It is important for everyone to pay attention to this burnout, Dosanjh said because if more health-care workers are lost to it then patients suffer.

Her father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in May 2020 and died last April.

“He was alone and then had to undergo his chemotherapy alone.

And then he had surgery alone and was in the hospital alone,” she said.

“There’s so many factors that affect our burnout.”

Health care is a calling where doctors and nurses are seen as invincible and stoic figures, Dosanjh said.

“We have feelings. We’re real people. We share our patients’ pain, we really do,” she said.

“The world needs to recognize that we’re humans, you know.”

That happens more sporadically now so today all the trucks are staffed and yesterday they were all staffed but on one of the night shifts someone would phone in sick just before the start of shift and there’s nobody left to fill in, they already have nine people doing back-fill shifts to cover so it’s too late to get someone.”

Thomas noted that all essential services are “running into this,” including police, paramedics, ambulance, nursing staff, hospital employees, technical support people. “They’re all facing this crisis right now.”

“Thank goodness our city had purchased rapid testing in advance of this wave coming,” Thomas said. “It didn’t happen all at once, so the key was having it stretched out over this month so that it didn’t on any given one day impact service too negatively.”

While the grocers offered a mix of bonuses, gift cards or other benefits during subsequent waves of the pandemic, none appeared to be offering any additional pay as a result of the Omicron surge.

Sobeys has committed to reinstating its “hero pay” if and when regions or provinces go back into lockdowns that close all non-essential retail.

Yet while many provinces have curtailed capacity limits – and in some cases are even urging people to use contactless curbside pickup whenever possible – none has reinstated full-scale lockdowns.

Paul Meinema, UFCW Canada national president, said the pandemic has highlighted the crucial role of grocery workers in the economy. The union has been calling for significant and permanent wage increases for grocery store workers, he said in an email.

Other retailers, such as Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd. and Home Depot Canada, replaced temporary pandemic bonuses with permanent wage increases.

UFCW Canada members have shown courage during the continuing pandemic Paul R. Meinema

The pandemic continued to dominate our lives in 2021, but instead of complaining about a virus that seemingly refuses to go away, UFCW members rolled up their sleeves and showed courage and resolve on the front lines of Canada’s most important industries.

From coast to coast, UFCW Canada members worked diligently to care for our loved ones and keep food on the tables of Canadian families, and thousands of members in the hotel and hospitality sectors went back to work for the first time since early 2020.

Encouragingly, the rapid development and deployment of vac-

cines, and the broad embrace of vaccination among Canadians, allowed workers and their families to return to a sense of normalcy for much of the year, and enabled the fully vaccinated to avoid serious illness from the coronavirus.

However, the arrival of the Omicron variant, and a recent surge in COVID-19 cases across the country, indicate that the virus hasn’t been defeated yet. To get there, public health experts agree widescale vaccination – including booster shots for the fully vaccinated and vaccinating children – will be essential.

Recognizing that vaccination is key to protecting everyone against COVID-19, UFCW Canada partnered with the “ This is Our Shot” campaign through 2021 to remind Canadians that we can only be #TogetherAgain if we all get vaccinated. As well, our union

supported frontline workers who lack paid sick leave by calling on Prime Minister Trudeau and Canada’s Premiers to provide “Paid Sick Days Now!” to all workers.

UFCW also advocated for a just and inclusive rebound from the pandemic by encouraging the federal government to “Support an Anti-Racist COVID-19 Recovery.”

Elsewhere on the campaign front, UFCW Canada won important victories on toxic receipts and conversion therapy, convincing major retailers such as Loblaws, Metro, and Costco to phase out receipts containing BPA and BPS chemicals, and helping to secure a federal ban on conversion practices that harm the LGBTQI2S community.

In addition, UFCW Canada helped to elect UFCW Local 832 activist Beatrice Bruske as President of the Canadian Labour Congress at the CLC’s 29th Con-

“So I had some experience in my personal life, and it wasn’t the mother’s first baby either,” he said.

“She was in good spirits and talking to the baby right after she was born. Everybody was very happy.”

Deputy fire chief Norm MacLeod said he was happy to be able to share the outcome.

“In a sea of bad news, it’s nice to be able to pass on something that’s a little lighter,” he said. “So many

BC Seniors Guide now available in Tagalog and Hindi

After 30 years supporting society’s most vulnerable people, John Block named Surrey Good Citizen of the Year

W

henever there’s a major charitable effort taking place on the Semiahmoo Peninsula, particularly if it benefits society’s most vulnerable people, one wouldn’t have to look hard to find the name John Block.

Either standing at the front and organizing a fundraiser, or observing quietly from the back as a contributor, Block and his wife Rose, who are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, have been household names to social service providers for the past 30 years.

And while the couple, who have lived in the area since 1983, do philanthropy work simply because they enjoy it, they were treated with some well-deserved recognition last week.

At the regular council meeting on Jan. 17, the City of Surrey named John Block the Surrey Good Citizen of the Year. And while it’s John’s name on the award, Rose’s contribution is worth equal recognition, John said.

Block said he was humbled and honoured by the award, although he was quite surprised when Mayor Doug McCallum phoned him to share the news.

“When I first got the call from Doug McCallum I thought somebody was playing a trick on me,” Block said. “Is this some kind of joke?”

“I thought, why is a politician calling me? We don’t normally contribute to political campaigns and that kind of thing, so I thought what is this all about? And then he said, ‘Oh, by the way, you’ve been selected for the Citizen of the Year,’” Block said. “I was just absolutely blown away.”

The list of projects that the Blocks have been part of is extensive, but recent efforts include work with the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society, Rotary Save-On Foods gift card program, Sources Community Resource Centre and White Rock Rotary’s Feed My City program.

“We are thrilled to see John being recognized as Surrey’s Good Citizen of the Year,” said Sources CEO David Young.

Block, with support from SaveOn Foods president and South Surrey resident Darrell Jones, founded the Rotary Save-On Foods Gift Card program.

As part of the program, Block explained, the Rotary club purchases Save-On Food cards at an eight-per-cent discount. Rotary then resells the gift cards for their face value and the difference goes to the food bank.

In addition to the discount, Block said, various sponsors in the community contribute a donation to the food bank equal to one per cent of the value of the cards that are sold every 90 days.

“So approximately 20 per cent of the value of every food card we sell goes to the food bank. In the last five years, we’ve sold approximately $2.4 million worth of food cards raising about $480,000 for our local food bank,” Block said.

Block is also involved in the Sources Coldest Night of the Year event and Sources mental health

programs for youth and young adults.

George Garrett, who co-founded the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society, described Block as a “fixture in the community.”

The society takes people to and from their cancer treatment appointments, for free, throughout the Lower Mainland.

“Not only did he give us money through the John Block Foundation but he gave me a lot of encouragement and good advice at the time,” Garrett said. “That was back in 2016, and he was one of our first very strong supporters.”

Block said he was inspired to give back to the community by his parents at a very early age. His earliest memory, he said, was listening to his father talk about supporting the Union Gospel Mission and the food bank.

“At a very early stage in my life, our parents were very community involved,” Block said. “They always encouraged my sisters and I that it was important to give back to those that were less fortunate than us.”

Block, who is a member of White Rock Baptist Church, said

he’s constantly reminded that “the second most important commandment is love your neighbour as yourself.”

“In our world, that means you find a need and you meet it. You go out there and contribute to those that are struggling that have a need,” Block said.

“We are people that are privileged, we live in nice homes, we have enough to eat. There are so many out there, particularly in recent years with COVID, that are really struggling. It brings us a lot of joy to be in a position where we can give our time as well as our resources.”

The Good Citizen of the Year is awarded to a Surrey resident or business owner who has given outstanding service for the last 15 years and whose volunteer contributions have made a positive impact on the city and the people.

Block said his family hopes that the award is an encouragement to others to contribute.

“I realize that there are many heroes out there that nobody knows about, but they know who they are and they are so much appreciated,” Block said.

The BC Seniors Guide is now available in Tagalog and Hindi, in addition to seven other languages.

In July 2021, the province released the “enhanced” 12th edition of the guide, published in seven languages including English, Chinese, French, Punjabi, Farsi, Korean and Vietnamese.

The province announced the two new additional language translations earlier this month.

“The BC Seniors’ Guide is a valuable resource as it links older adults to information they need to help make important decisions as they age. B.C. is also a diverse and multilingual province, and our government recognizes the need to ensure that all residents can access support and services in the language they are the most comfortable using,” said Mable Elmore, B.C.’s Parliamentary Secretary for Seniors’ Services and Long-Term Care.

The guide can be accessed online in PDF format at gov.bc.ca/seniorsguide. People can also order free print copies through the Office of the Seniors Advocate at 1-877-952-3181.

According to the province, the guide includes information to programs such as: • Fair PharmaCare • Medical Services Plan • The Home Adaptations for Independence program, which provides financial assistance for low-income seniors to modify their homes • Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters, which helps make rents affordable for low- to moderate-income seniors.

Going through old paperwork and mementoes offers window into past Adventures Ursula Maxwell-Lewis

Since COVID-19 continues to curtail travel plans, I’d run out of excuses for tackling the storage room.

To that end I hauled out boxes of family memorabilia. Perhaps, I reflected, my daughters will be saved from the trouble of trashing it after I’ve shuffled off this mortal coil.

Bear with me as I explain the ensuing conundrum, then judge for yourself if you sympathize with my reluctance to dispense with at least some of it.

Buried among a plethora of global weekly travel epistles faithfully mailed weekly to my mother are bunches of envelopes tightly packed into a red plastic Western Airlines flight bag. Digging deep, I unearth a variety of blasts from the past, including my Central African Airways and Air Canada contracts.

my employment as an air hostess is, I note, based on the understanding that I complete my training, or give one month’s written notice if I change my mind. CAA, however, can give me “one week’s written notice, on medical grounds, or if it is considered that you will not make a suitable air hostess.”

Attached to the letter is a contract offering a salary of £601.19 per annum. I did rate 47 holiday days a year and various bonuses, though. The contract also states that I had to resign if I married and (e) It is pointed out that the maximum flying age for an air hostess is 32 years. Since I had to be 21 to fly and my weight (105 lbs) and height ( 5’3”) were verified at the initial interview this was a career with limitations. None of that occurred to me at the time. I’d have wings in more ways than one.

I never regretted a minute of it.

Three years later, with war looming in central Africa, I headed for a London newspaper job—which to my surprise morphed into a Heathrow Airport Air Canada Passenger Relations job, and a few years later a transfer to Customer Relations

at Place Ville Marie in Montreal.

Proof of that I find in an AC envelope marked: Miss U.C.M Conway - Personal and Confidential.

The enclosed inter-office correspondence reminds me of another rash decision (the story of my life).

In this epistle Air Canada granted my request for a four month leave of absence. Reading it, I can still feel my supervisor’s disapproval (and concern). “Ursula, don’t do this. Think of your pension!”, Pat Hare had cautioned me. I should have listened to her! Anyway, I’d been studying German for no particular reason, which had inspired me to sign up for the Goethe Institute in Rothenburg op der Tauber German immersion during what turned out to be one of their most frigid winters.

Digging deeper into the boxes, I unearth the Shaw Saville Line First Class Passage Ticket issued for mother and I to sail from Southampton, England, to Cape Town, South Africa (via Las Palmas, Canary Islands – I have the postcards from the bazaar!) onboard the QSMV Dominion Monarch. Our total fare was £218! Even the insur-

The list of mementoes, newspaper clippings and other memorabilia continues to surface. Good grief!

Here’s the cardboard cocktail brochure from The Bailie’s Bar at The Bailie Nicol Jarvie Hotel in Aberfoyle, Scotland, saved from my parents’ 1940 honeymoon! Mother probably had a Gin Fizz, but I’m intrigued to know what would be in the Leave-It-To-Me. According to Pinterest pictures, the hotel was named after a character in Sir Walter Scott’s novel, Rob Roy. The tartan cocktail brochure tells me the establishment had “a wide peat-burning fireplace, flag floors, walls of whinstone from the local quarries and wood-

work of dark bog oak”. I’m picturing my parents … och, just keep it.

Perhaps being grounded by threats of COVID has advantages.

At least I can refile all this stuff in some semblance of order and let the kids do what they wish with it when the time comes.

Meantime, blimey! My South African driver’s licence! Well, one never knows. One day it might come in handy….

We can take steps to age like Betty Peninsula Zoomer April Lewis

I was sad to read that our ‘golden girl’ Betty White, has left this world at age 99.

I want to age well, just like her.

As does Dr. Grace Park, a local physician who is the Regional Medical Director of Home Health, Specialized Community Health Services – Complex Medical/Frail.

As a practising family physician in White Rock, Dr. Park provides care and supports clients to live independently at home for as long as possible.

She promotes healthy aging while avoiding health decline and frailty.

We Canadians are lucky in so many ways. Our life expectancy has been increasing over the years and we can expect to live well into our 80s and even longer. In fact, centenarians represent the fastest growing age group in Canada, with their numbers expected to increase

from 8,000 in 2016 to nearly 40,000 by 2050.

However, many of us spend the last eight to 10 years living with frailty. Frailty is often used to describe age-related decline in our health and function but there is research showing frailty does not have to occur as we age.

In fact, the medical use of the word frailty is now measurable through a geriatric assessment and is defined as an accumulation of health deficits. The health deficits are things like hearing loss, memory problems, weak muscles, etc.

If it can be measured, it can be prevented and medical intervention, as well as our lifestyle choices, can actually prevent or at least reduce the progression of frailty as we age.

The Canadian Frailty Network (CFN) is promoting the AVOID frailty strategy.

A: Activity – exercise at any age is helpful; V: Vaccination – think hepatitis, shingles, flu, pneumonia and, of course, COVID-19; O: Optimize medication – ensure

you need the medication and that the doses are optimal; I: Interaction – social engagement is critical to healthy aging and social isolation correlates with frailty progression; D: Diet – As you get older food is medicine in order to ensure adequate protein, calcium etc.

The AVOID strategy can be reviewed with your family doctor and a social prescription can be provided to help you connect with community social resources in order to improve your health and wellbeing.

Getting older does not have to mean a decline in activity or function. Community organizations and volunteers can help seniors to stay connected and better supported in their homes.

In Surrey and White Rock, we have Seniors Come Share where a seniors’ community connector can provide you with a social prescription to help overcome barriers to accessing community programs such as transportation for exercise classes, language or financial barriers and food security. Or if there is

a psychological barrier such as lack of confidence, the seniors’ community connector can partner you with volunteers to help set goals and follow up to ensure success.

United Way has been providing Better At Home for help with housekeeping, snow shoveling etc. We also have BC211 for other community services. The community-based senior services organizations also have friendly visitors, walking groups, cooking classes etc. During the pandemic, many programs are being provided online. There is even help to set up technology for seniors who wish to join online groups.

Speaking with your GP is a great start to addressing healthy

aging and to AVOID frailty. Now through social prescribing, Seniors Come Share can support community connections. The link can be found at whiterock-southsurrey. pathwaysbc.ca.

The CFN website also has a lot of information on how seniors can take charge of their own health through preventive strategies to avoid living their golden years with frailty, on cfn-nce.ca/frailty-matters/avoid-frailty.
