The

Comox Valley Record

Comox Valley has spoken! 98,806 Votes

It was a tight race, but there can only be three finalists per category.

Congratulations to all the Winners & Finalists!

Thank You

ell, Comox Valley, you’ve done it again. It’s another record-setting year for the community’s favourite popularity poll. The consumer-driven Comox Valley Readers’ Choice awards have been determined, after organizers plowed through an incredible 98,806 votes nearly 25,000 more than in 2020. The response could have had something to do with the fantastic grand prize. The Kingfisher Oceanside Resort and Spa sponsored the contest and supplied the grand prize of a $1,000 staycation at the popular Comox Valley resort. Lori Yarrow’s name was randomly selected from all the entries received. Incidentally, the Kingfisher and its restaurant, Ocean7 Restaurant | AQUA Bistro & Wine Bar, combined for 10 top-three finishes, with six top placements, including the prestigious “Best Place To Work” award. We had a total of 138 different businesses, people and places nominated by readers of the Comox Valley Record, in six different ballots, and once again, food and drink appears to be foremost in the minds of Comox Valley consumers. The Food and Drink ballot was the most popular, with doughnuts being

the most popular category of them all. Other categories in the Food & Drink ballot that drew a lot of votes were Chocoholic Experience, Local Winery, and Local Distillery. As this is a fluid process, there are new categories listed every year, based upon input from readers. One such category for 2021 (which, based on votes, should have been added long ago) is Best Place to Walk Your Dog. Clearly, there are a lot of dog walkers in the Comox Valley, and the majority of them picked Seal Bay as their favourite dog-walking area. Other new categories included Best Lunch Spot (Atlas Café), Youth Activist (Zara Nybo), and Best Community-Minded Business (Uplifters). Some Readers’ Choice dynasties continued, with Roland St. Pierre of Locals winning Best Local Chef for a seventh straight year, and Butcher’s Block once again finishing on top for Best Sandwich. And there were also some first-time winners, including Ace Brewing Co. which climbed to the top of the Best Brewery category. It finished third overall in its first year. Did your favourite restaurant, hiking trail or swimming hole rank in the top three? Flip the pages to find out…

Gilakas’la (thank you) Comox Valley for voting I-Hos Gallery one of the top 3 Jewelry locations. I-Hos Gallery staff and artisans, we hold our hands up high to you all, honored and proud to show case and share our culture.

Candice Robillard believes everyone deserves to dance. Robillard and her new business, Valley Girls Heels Training & Performance Programs, is taking top spot in Arts and Entertainment Dance School category for a reason her goal is to ensure every body, no matter the size or type, has an opportunity to strap on a pair of shoes and dance. “It’s not about what you look like, or your age, or your size, or even how well you dance. It’s just about feeling confident and powerful and destroying industry stereotypes,” she said. “This is more about stepping out of your comfort zone and forgetting about your insecurities. I want to create (a space) where people look around and go: ‘I look like her.’ “ With a background in dance and cheerleading, Robillard opened the program about one year ago and noted no experience is necessary for her classes, which teach the basic choreography of heels dance, with new steps introduced as the sessions progress. There are six-, eight-, and 10-week sessions available, depending on the day of the week. The ‘heels’ style combines elements of hip hop and street jazz with movement. “Nobody in the room cares about how you look, or how good you dance,” Robillard explained. “We are all there to cheer each other on… just come out and have a great time. Even if you’re scared - we’re all scared.” She had counted herself out as a nominee for Readers’ Choice as she didn’t believe Valley Girls had been in operation long enough to be nominated. “I got the email and couldn’t believe it,” she noted with a smile. For more information on Valley Girls Heels Training & Performance Programs, check out the Facebook page (www.facebook.com/valleygirlsdance) the Instagram page, @valleygirlsdance or valleygirlsdance.com.

Food & Drink Category

Fluid Bar & Grill - Winner in the Best Caesar and Martini category and top three finalist in Local Takeout and Cocktail category

Wednesday, October 27, 2021 Z9

If the Comox Valley is the land of plenty, Fluid Bar and Grill will meet that standard with plenty of options for great food and drink. Whether it’s a beverage on the patio, a family dinner or craft cocktails with friends, Fluid satisfies a variety of cravings with its upscale casual dining in a metropolitan environment. Readers agree, as Fluid won four awards in the Food & Drink ballot this year. The Courtenay restaurant was deemed to have the Best Caesar and Best Martini, and also was a finalist for Best Cocktail and Best Take-out. The restaurant, located at 1175 Cliffe Ave. in Courtenay, welcomes palates of all types: children are welcomed in the main restaurant area and patio and their options with their all-day, fast lunch or happy hour menus can meet all needs. Their award-winning Caesars are topped with a pepperoni stick, crunch bean, chilled prawn, pepperoncini and olive - dinner in a glass! Their aim is to be the local neighbourhood hangout, even bringing their specialty cocktails - the bellini - to homes in their ‘to go’ kits. Open until midnight, seven days a week, Fluid Bar and Grill has been recognized for satisfying the needs of diners in the Valley, winning the Reader’s Choice in the Food and Drink category. Manager Guan-Carlo Bevenuti (Benny) is grateful for the support for the restaurant and appreciates the customers who considers themselves regulars or are visiting Fluid for the first time. “Thank you for all of the support from our local community; we could not do this without you,” he added. To find their menu or for more information, visit fluidbarandgrill.com.

Gord Johns once again took top honours as the favourite elected official in the area. Perhaps it’s no surprise then the repeat winner came out on top in the polls in the most recent federal election. Once again, in his third election. he will continue to represent many Comox Valley residents as the MP for the Courtenay-Alberni riding. He first ran for a seat in Ottawa in 2015. However, he gained experience in politics at the local level in Tofino, and he knows he’s just one of many seasoned political figures in the region. “We are deep and rich in leadership at all levels of government,” he says. He has deep roots in the region, as his grandparents married in Cumberland, and he was born and raised on Vancouver Island. For Johns, there is plenty of work to do in the riding and in the House of Commons, as he points to a number of issues such as the climate crisis, opioid addiction, the pandemic, Reconciliation with First Nations and housing affordability, to name only a few. He says his job is to “corral” these and make these social, environmental and economic ideas, concerns and voices of the people in the community a priority. “I think it’s a reflection of the people in our communities,” he says. “We have strong voices. We have good ideas.” He is happy to have made a connection with readers, but he stresses the work he does really represents their efforts. “I’m just honoured and privileged to serve the people,” he says. “It’s humbling to get nominated, it’s humbling to get recognized. The true champions are the people in our communities doing the hard work.”

The line of plaques on the wall inside the shop attests to the feelings customers have for Apollo Tattoo. You see them right inside the door. Again and again, there are reminders of Readers’ Choice awards dating back to the early years for the tattoo business. “I think we’ve won every year,” says Ryan Walz, who operates the tattoo shop with his wife Amanda. They work with another artist, Rob Thebert, to produce designs that keep people coming back for more. It’s been more than a decade since the couple came to set up shop. They arrived from Saskatoon in 2010, and they have been at the current location on Cliffe Avenue since 2015. Thebert is originally from Montréal. One thing that can change is demand for certain kinds of images. While there might be old favourites, others tend to pop up on social media that people see online at places like Pinterest. There are definite trends, says Ryan, but many customized ideas too. A quick look at social media shows some of their recent creations, such as a couple’s matching arm tattoos of half a sunflower with the words, “You are my Sunshine” on one arm and “My only Sunshine” on the other. With the awards adding up, the level of support from the public is no surprise, as Ryan estimates about 80 per cent of their clients are repeat customers. “They definitely seem to come back every time,” he says. Apollo Tattoo is located at #200-2270 Cliffe Ave., in the upstairs section of the building, though customers should contact them by email for an appointment.

Origin Health: Meganne Calabrigo, Brittany Filipetti, Alea Bell, Eryn Freeman and Kim Jaccard - Winner in the Chiropractor, Naturopathic Physician, Physiotherapist and Registered Massage Therapist Categories

Wednesday, October 27, 2021 Z29

Origin Integrated Health in Comox is a team of professionals who collaborate and combine therapies to hasten the healing process. Doctors Brittany Filipetti (owner) and Kyle Salloum, who are both chiropractors, collaborate with athletic therapists, kinesiologists, acupuncturists, medical doctors, physiotherapists, massage therapists and naturopaths to determine the best plan for patients. They find tissues that are dysfunctional, and/or hypoxic and tight (lack oxygen due to poor circulation), and then use various techniques to hasten recovery. “We make treatment plans,” said Filipetti, who started the business in 2017. “It involves at least two to three practitioners. It’s almost like we’re contractors for the body, and we all have these specific things we do to help someone get better. “We see a lot of chronic injuries, from muscle imbalances. We find those imbalances, we treat the tissues that are dysfunctional and imbalanced, and then we send them for exercise rehab to work on strength…We exist for a lot of people who have tried many other things. Some people can just go for massage or have a few physio treatments. We exist for the people who don’t fall into that category, and they have something chronic. Probably the hardest part of the job here is seeing people spend so much money treating their injury.” The team includes acupuncturist Matt O’Meara, athletic therapist Eryn Freeman, kinesiologist Kim Jaccard, massage therapists Meganne Calabrigo and Tessa Rowan, and naturopathic doctor Alea Bell. “We have a good vibe in the office,” Filipetti said. “No one’s on power trips. We’re a pretty good team.” As evidenced by Readers’ Choice voting: five team members reached the top three in different categories. Origin Integrated Health is located at Unit 2, 1261 Noel Ave. The building contains a rehab space, where the team is starting classes such as ‘Mobility for Men,’ which had a waitlist. Despite the challenges of COVID, Filipetti said the team hopes to become more involved in the community, by way of offering services at race events, as an example. Before COVID, she had been offering voluntary chiropractic services with the Care-A-Van mobile health-care clinic — something Filipetti hopes to resume.

Run to Beer - Winner in the Sports Team category

A little exercise and a wee pint. This is what Run to Beer Comox Valley is all about. The idea took shape a few years ago, in the middle of winter, when Derek Kaufman and a few buddies gathered and decided, literally, to run along the streets of Comox until they were ready to have a beer at one of the town’s drinking establishments. Since that cold, snowy night, the underground exercise group has been meeting every Tuesday at 7 p.m. at either the Land & Sea Brewing Company, Church St. Taphouse, New Tradition Brewing Company or the Comox Legion. Before the tightening of COVID restrictions, Tuesday runs would regularly attract 30-50 runners of all ages and abilities. “We’re getting there again, getting back to numbers,” said Kaufman, who is the race director for the annual Perseverance Trail Run. “I think it’s more like 20 to 30 right now. I think that’s going to start picking up as the weather turns.” The group had organized Wednesday runs in Courtenay, but Kaufman said those were “hit and miss” in turns of numbers. “Comox is just a lot more consistent.” Run to Beer’s Facebook group has grown to 855 members, but Kaufman notes the organization does not have memberships. Along with running and socializing, the group raises funds for the food bank, LUSH Valley and the Indian Residential School Survivors Society, among other organizations. “We did a fundraiser for the Kus-kus-sum project this year, and raised about $3,500 for them. Everything that we sell, our hats and shirts, is always a fundraiser.” To date, runners have raised about $9,200 and counting, through sales of shirts, hats and toques. Besides the regular runs, the group schedules many “Special Editions” that feature events such as racecourse previews, with a social to follow. Tuesday’s run was followed by a Halloween party at the Comox Legion. For more information, all runs are posted in the Facebook Group: Run to Beer Comox Valley.

We would like to thank everyone that nominated us, it means a lot. Thanks ! We have afternoon spots for our off leash hikes and a few spots left at the daycare
