Surrey residents and businesses have seen a steep rise in their property taxes this year, despite Mayor Doug McCallum insisting they have been held at 2.9 per cent.

“There’s is going to be a lot of noise about this,” said Anita Huberman, CEO of the Surrey Board of Trade, during a Zoom meeting held by the board on Monday.

“In Surrey we’re facing some significant increases and it really relates to the mounting cost of doing business.”

“I’m very excited to be involved in this campaign because I think it is what is democracy at its best – it’s local citizens, in this case in Surrey and also in other parts of the province, saying that they want to have a say, they want to have a voice in who polices them in Surrey,” Tieleman said. “This is a very expensive decision, a very controversial decision, and it’s only right that the voters of Surrey have the final say, not politicians, not bureaucrats.”

Tieleman said they will be focusing on Surrey’s nine provincial ridings because “this is a Surrey issue, it’s not a provincial issue. And that’s one of the flaws in the Initiative Act, it doesn’t allow for a regional referendum in a regional initiative.”

However, he noted, the BC Referendum Act allows cabinet to designate a regional referendum and it could decide “at any point in time” that Surrey deserves to have a referendum.

“I think what we’re attempting to show here is that there is strong support in Surrey for a actual referendum on the policing issue and we believe and hope that when citizens come out and show their support for this initiative that the government will have to listen.”

Stephenson, the campaign manager, said he hopes to set up booths to collect petition signatures at banquet halls, outside grocery stores, and at gurdwaras and churches, “things like that.”

“We’ll absolutely do our best to be in every neighbourhood of Surrey over the three month campaign.”

Some volunteers get paid. The directors on the Surrey Police Board, for example, are paid an honorarium for their time.

Executive Director Melissa Granum was expected to deliver a Surrey Police Board per diem quarterly update at the board’s meeting on Tuesday (after the Now-Leader’s press time), concerning the status of the directors’ per diems related to board and committee meetings, training sessions and “other commitments” from January to March of this year.

Granum notes in her report that the SPB directors’ compensation is aligned with that of the Vancouver Police Board and the Delta Police Board.

“The per diem is not to be considered ‘payment’ for board work, rather it is a recognition that Board members’ commitments may take away from professional and personal time,” she explains in her report.

All together, the eight directors received a total of $38,738 between them for the first three months of 2021. Meena Brisard received $7,673, James Carwana received $7,029, Harley Chappell, $2,880, Cheny Cloke, $4,395, Manav Gill, $3,426, Elizabeth Model, $3,699, Bob Rolls, $2,607 and Jessie Sunner, $7,029.

There were 35 meetings in that time – three board meetings, two “special” board meetings, 14 human resources and compensation committee meetings, four governance committee meetings, three finance committee meetings, two communications committee meetings, social media training and five meetings identified as “other.”

The frequency of board meetings has declined and is anticipated to reduce further once SPS reaches “steady state.”

The City of Surrey launched its year-long Surrey Slow Streets pilot campaign on June 17 to better understand how reduced speed limits impact residential neighbourhoods.

Speed limits have been reduced in six Surrey neighbourhood zones for the project’s duration.

Three now have 30 km/hr posted speed limits and the other three, 40 km/h limits, with signs indicating the new speed limits in accordance with B.C. Motor Vehicle Act legislation.

“During the one-year pilot, vehicle speeds, crashes and perception of safety among residents will be monitored,” Mayor Doug McCallum said. “If the research shows an improvement, consideration will be given to expand the Slow Streets program to other residential neighbourhoods in Surrey.”

Council approved the project last December.

“The pilot project has been carefully designed to test the impacts of reduced speed limits such that staff can make informed recommendations with regards to residential area speed limits city-wide,” Scott Neuman, Surrey’s general manager of engineering, told council in a corporate report in December 2020.

The city identified eight stretches of road included in the study, but two of them will be control sites and keep the present posted limited of 50 km/h.

Neuman also told council in February that city staff are comparing what other cities are doing about speed limits as part of the Vision Zero Surrey plan.

Shabnem Afzal, Surrey’s road safety manager, noted that the faster people drive, the less time they have to react.

Dr. Emily Newhouse, Fraser Health’s medical health officer, noted speeding vehicles are “consistently” a top factor in deterring Surrey residents from being more active near home.

“Reducing speeds can help reduce the risk of serious and preventable injuries, while also improving longer-term health by providing residents with safe opportunities to be physically active,” she said.

The fledgling Uplift Canada Foundation is coming to Surrey to collect unused clothing from households on Saturday, June 26, as part of the non-profit’s mission to relocate such goods to local shelters.

The student-led upcycling effort is a first in Surrey for the environment-minded organization, launched in January with monthly pickups on the last Saturday.

“So far we have collected from Tsawwassen, Ladner, Coquitlam, New Westminster, and Burnaby,” noted Zoey Purvis, media rep.

Not long ago, someone asked Tammy Bourelle if she worked.

“No, I’m a stay-at-home mom,” the South Surrey resident replied.

“But mom,” Bourelle’s eightyear-old daughter, Morgan, piped up, “you do work. You’re a fundraiser, you’re fundraising for Options.”

The moment was emotional for Bourelle, who is among 50 Surrey-area women each tasked with raising $25,000 to build and furnish an affordable housing project in Newton.

“It really resonated with me because I do feel like just a stayat-home mom and you know, I want my kids to know that I did something and made a difference,” Bourelle said.

“It’s been very empowering.

And when my daughter said that, I almost cried because I thought, ‘Yeah, I do work, and I am working on something important.’”

Bourelle’s work with the “Women of Options” project (womenofoptions.ca) helps Options Community Services raise $1.5 million in support of a new 100-unit housing project at 81st Avenue and King George Boulevard, in celebration of the organization’s 50th anniversary.

Launched in February, the campaign harnesses the fundraising power of 50 “influential South Fraser women,” and the fundraising is now in the final stretch, ending Wednesday (June 30).

The women are raising money in diverse ways, including personal donations, gift cards, silent auctions, painting classes, doughnut sales and even “Surrey Nostalgia” shirts and other merchandise.

All 50 of the fundraising women are profiled on womenofoptions.ca, along with project details.

Inspired, Bourelle asked a group of friends to help her raise $25,000.

“I gathered seven ladies and said, ‘Let’s work together and raise some money for this important project.’

We did an online auction from donations we’d gathered, and that raised $3,300. Then my personal trainer and life coach, Sandra Sherbaty, she did a walk that raised $1,600. She really inspired and motivated me to do this project.”

Now 75, Daulat says he’s “kinda semi-retired,” along with his wife, Camla.

Hard work should lead to truth

ho says you can’t fight city hall?

Surrey’s Darlene Bennett is experiencing a particularly emotional week. Her husband Paul was shot dead in their driveway in Cloverdale on June 23, 2018 in what police believe to be a case of mistaken identity.

She is also absorbing the work that’s cut out for her after Elections BC approved her application last week to conduct an initiative petition to learn once and for all what kind of support – and opposition – there is to the City of Surrey’s plan to swap out the Surrey RCMP for the Surrey

Police Service. It’s a milestone achievement in what’s been a raging debate since the current city council took power in 2018.

Bennett’s campaign is catching fire. And it needs to, if she is to collect the required number of signatures within 90 days after the petition is issued on Aug. 16.

It’s purpose is to have the provincial government hold a binding referendum in Surrey, featuring a single question on whether people want the Surrey RCMP to stay or be replaced.

Bennett and her supporters have a herculean – but not impossible – task ahead of them.

In her corner is Bill Tieleman, who helped former Social Credit premier Bill Vander Zalm mount a successful referendum campaign that led to the defeat of the Harmonized Sales Tax in 2011.

Tieleman and Bennett are definitely not alone in their conviction that Surrey residents need to be canvassed on this controversial issue, despite Mayor Doug McCallum’s position that this was already accomplished through his election win in 2018.

Bennett’s campaign, after much hard work, should finally shed light on the truth of the matter.

The Editor, Mayor Doug McCallum and his cadre on Surrey council are gambling with public money.

They want to deposit $50 million on a wildcat scheme to extend 84th Avenue across the south end of Bear Creek park. This would increase total traffic volume and spawn a string of new accident hotspots at intersections stretching through residential Fleetwood to Fraser Highway.

Along the way, it will destroy a natural jewel in the centre of Surrey. The Surrey Transportation Plan, with a public engagement process which is still ongoing, was supposed to inform transportation policy across the entire city.

The plan does not mention 84th Avenue.

Instead of wasting gazillions on a controversial gamble, Surrey should invest a few hundred thousand dollars to preserve beautiful Bear Creek park for future generations and save the big money for democratic implementation of proven, properly structured strategic transportation plans.

Surrey RCMP asking for video after shots fired at Jeep in Newton Aaron Hinks Black Press Media

Police are investigating after shots were fired at a Jeep in Newton last Saturday evening.

Surrey RCMP said the occupants of a silver SUV shot at the occupants of a white Jeep at approximately 8:40 p.m. on the 7300-block of 128th Street.

“Both vehicles sped away and the Jeep crashed near the intersection of 128 Street and 76 Avenue,” Surrey RCMP said in a news release. “Upon arrival and further investigation, the occupants of the Jeep were located uninjured.”

Police said the motive of the shooting is still under investigation.

“Based on the initial investigation, it is believed that the shooting is targeted.”

On Sunday morning, RCMP issued another news release asking the public for any available video of the

incident.

Surrey awards $7.3-million street-paving contract to Lafarge Canada Surrey city council has awarded Lafarge Canada Inc. $7,326,667.95 for major road network arterial road paving mostly in the north end of the city. The work is expect-

ed to begin in July and be completed by next spring.

Of the 16 projects, only one is in South Surrey – arterial paving on 152nd Street, from the 3100-block

to the 3000-block.

Scott Neuman, Surrey’s general manager of engineering, said the contract permits construction from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through

Friday, abiding by the Surrey Noise Control Bylaw.

“The contract does not include an option for contractors to work 24 hours a day, seven days a week,

as based on input from contractors, there were no financial savings or time savings expected,” Neuman notes in his report.

Surrey city council aims to cut back on parking available to Surrey motorists along major rapid-transit lines in an effort to wean drivers off their cars and get more people using public transit.

Council endorsed a corporate report to that end at its June 14 council meeting, with city staff recommending reducing parking minimums in rapid transit areas as well as reducing parking requirements for rental housing developments and extending inlieu of parking options to rapid transit areas at $20,000 per stall.

“I think with encouragement of using rapid transit, with our SkyTrain going to be built very soon which will go through the centre of our city, the need for parking stalls isn’t there,” Mayor Doug McCallum said.

The mayor noted that land developers have been telling city hall that by not doing so many parking stalls they can lower the cost of building in Surrey.

“That’s s huge factor,” McCallum said. “Parking stalls are very expensive, thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars per stall and for them not to have to do so much literally lowers their costs, therefore it lowers the cost of the housing, so it’s at least one measure that has huge advantage I think to try to start to try to control the cost of housing.”

Councillor Mandeep Nagra, chair of the city’s development advisory committee, said studies have revealed that in parts of Surrey closer to rapid transit areas “only” 45 per cent of the parking lots are being used.

“This is a great step forward in reducing those requirements,” Nagra said of the recommenda-

“We’re going to be seeing less applications for parking reduction variances and all that and at the same time I think we’re promoting more people to use public transport. This is going to reduce the cars on our streets.”

The report, by Scott Neuman, Surrey’s general manager of engineering, and Jean Lamontagne, Surrey’s general manager of planning and development, called on council to endorse staff recommendations that define Rapid Transit Areas as containing the existing Expo SkyTrain line as well as corridors planned for the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain expansion and Surrey-Newton-Guildford.

It also recommended reducing multi-family residential parking requirements in these areas, setting new market rental housing parking requirements and expanding “alternative” parking provisions in these areas such as car sharing, cycling and walking.

Neuman and Lamontagne noted that as Surrey grows, transit service improves, and transportation choices increase, supply and management of off-street parking need to be reviewed, “both in terms of its day-to-day impact on the public and its role in helping to shape the future development of the city.”

Fifteen in-person events are featured in a “Summer POP!” series planned by Surrey Civic Theatres.

Tickets are now on sale for the “Performances Outdoors in Parks” concerts, theatre productions, kid-friendly gatherings and more, from July 9 to Sept. 12 – public health orders permitting.

The events will be staged at Glades Garden, Bear Creek Park and Darts Hill Gardens. Ticket prices range from $5 to $25, with a limited number available.

“This series of outdoor performances and experiences is designed to help people reconnect with the performing arts, and also enjoy a chance to gather safely,” a news release says.

“In the advent that audiences are unable to gather for these events safely under public health guidelines, Civic Theatres will move select programming to virtual events.”

Earlier this year, an artist call was made for performances in the three POP! categories of “Main Stage at the Glades” events, Summer Strolls and self-directed activities at various parks.

Surrey’s virtual Canada Day celebration will this year feature Buffy Sainte-Marie, Walk off the Earth and Jim Cuddy.

Presented by KPU, Virtual Surrey Canada Day will take place on July 1, with a Family Show from 10:30 a.m. to noon and the Evening Show from 6 to 9 p.m.

In May, she won a fan-vote contest over fellow top-three finalists Trev Conkey and the duo Velavox.

The contest winner, a Fraser Heights Secondary grad, receives a performance slot during the evening showcase, plus a $500 honorarium and $250 gift card to Central City Shopping Centre.

“I’m very excited to be back on the City of Surrey Canada Day stage for my

third year in a row,” Pater told the Now-Leader.

“I’m very thankful for all my fans who continuously show their support and especially during the voting round hosted this year. I found this experience eye-opening and heartwarming as I saw the numbers growing beside my name. I am truly grateful for all the love and support I’ve received. The Canada Day celebration will be one for the books, you won’t be let down!”

Pater was recently featured in the Music City Surrey Showcase, a 10-episode look at Surrey-based artists and educators with videos co-produced by FUSIONpresents and Face the Music Entertainment.

Four of Surrey’s annual “major events” will be held virtually this year, and one is cancelled for 2021. The city’s International Children’s Festival is postponed until 2022.

Looking ahead, online-only events are planned for Canada Day, Fusion Festival and also the Nov. 21 Surrey Tree Lighting Festival. The city’s Party for the Planet was held as a virtual event on Earth Day.

Surrey’s movie theatres have reopened after one long winter/spring in the dark.

The lights are on again at the family-operated Hollywood 3 in Newton and Caprice in South Surrey, as well as Cineplex Cinemas Strawberry Hill and Landmark Cinemas Guildford, in line with B.C.’s relaxed pandemic restrictions Tuesday, June 15.

All movies theatres in the province were ordered closed last November, meaning many months of no business for both independent operators and chains.

“Very little was available to us movie theatre operators, as grants, and we have been one of the hardest-hit industries – more than most,” said Rahim Manji, whose family operates the Hollywood 3 chain.

“We’re open, we’re back and we’re safe,” he added.

“We just need to get the word out there.”

Manji’s Hollywood 3 Cinema in Newton screens second-run movies, while his Caprice shows first-run titles such as the new Cruella, Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway and A Quiet Place Part II. Such new movies and others are screened at the Landmark and Cineplex theatres in Surrey.

Mike Ens has general-managed the Strawberry Hill cinema since February 2020.

“I had about about a month of normalcy here before COVID,” Ens said with a laugh. “We closed mid-March 2020, then had a few months of complete closure, reopened in early July, then closed again at the end of November, due to restrictions. So it’s about seven months closed during the recent one, and the first closure was about three months.”

Ens said patrons will notice new safety protocols and procedures at Strawberry Hill, in order to make people “feel as safe and comfortable as possible,” including en-

“You’ll see a lot of staff members cleaning and wiping things down more than you would before, touch points and areas like that, and contact tracing for those who enter the building,” Ens said. “It will look different for patrons than it would two years ago, for sure.”

With theatre auditoriums capped at 50 people per movie, a new ticket system is in place.

“No groups of unfamiliar people will be able to be seated next to each other, and that’s done through ticketing,” Ens explained. “When you purchase a ticket there’s an implementation in the system where all the surrounding seats around the one you purchased now become unavailable to future ticket-buyers. We’ve had assigned seating at this location even pre-pandemic, back when we installed our recliner seats, so for us that’s not new, but this blocking off is.”

At the Hollywood 3, Manji said the 50-max capacity won’t be profitable.

“But we need to get open and remind people that we’re here,” he underlined. “It’s still restricted because of the government regulations, but we have bills that will probably take us two years to pay. The landlords have been helping us here, and in South Surrey (at the Caprice). Unfortunately the Rialto wasn’t the same situation so we ended up closing there (last September).”

Out of the gate on June 15,

the Hollywood 3 screened Croods: A New Age, Tom & Jerry, Nobody and Wonder Woman 1984.

“With our second-runs it’s hard, it’s tough, because we’re still in the same zone as Cineplex, but with all the streaming stuff going on and just 50 people allowed, movies will actually come a lot quicker,” Manji said. “Within two weeks of release, they’ll probably be here, it just depends on how big the movie is and how many screens it’s playing. Something like Fast and Furious that’s coming out next, that’ll probably play on eight screens (in first-run theatres), to get the numbers through the door.”

Last summer, Manji said people were “afraid” of coming to see a movie, but the mood seems to have changed.

“We were having days of just two or three people in the theatre, and three or four staff,” he recalled. “So, movie theatres that did open last summer lost money. It would have been better had we stayed closed, but last June we were the first theatre to reopen in Canada and we wanted to show movies. We want to be open and have movies, give people something to do.

“I think right now it feels different than last June, it just does,” Manji added. “I’m a lot more optimistic, with more people calling, more people out and getting vaccinated, so I think the comfort level is a lot better. We will still keep all the safety precautions, exactly the same.”

Before she returns to the Olympic Games this summer, Surrey-raised gymnast Shallon Olsen entered the Coquitlam Sports Hall of Fame.

This week she was named to the organization’s “Wall of Fame” during a virtual ceremony, video of which is posted to YouTube.

Olsen, 20, grew up in the Fraser Heights area but trained in Coquitlam and attended Centennial Secondary in the city across the river. Upon graduation, she left to compete with the gymnastics team at the University Alabama.

Olsen was the youngest member of Team Canada when she made her Olympic debut at Rio 2016 in her first year of senior eligibility, notes a

bio posted to olympic. ca. She is now aiming to compete at the 2020 Games in Tokyo this summer, in artistic gymnastics. “(Olsen) achieved a career highlight by qualifying for the eight-woman vault final, a feat she repeated in her world championship debut in

2017 in Montreal,” the bio says.

“She qualified for her third straight vault final at the world championships in 2019 when she just missed the podium, finishing fourth. It was also at those worlds that she helped Canada qualify in the team event for Tokyo 2020. Earlier in 2019, Olsen helped Canada win team silver and earned an individual bronze in vault at the Pan Am Games in Lima.”

Coquitlam Sports Hall of Fame was established in 2020. No such hall exists in Surrey, although the idea has been floated in recent years.

The Coquitlam hall this year inducted new members Dave McKay (Olympic wrestler), Brit-

tany Timko Baxter (2004 FIFA world under-19 women’s Golden Boot recipient), 1987 Coquitlam Metro Ford United (national women’s soccer champion) and Sohen Gill (lacrosse legend).

In addition to Olsen, Wall of Fame inductees this year are Robert Church (lacrosse), Ella Finding (wrestling, rugby, track and field, soccer), Emma si yuDong (tennis), Matthew Shanley (baseball), Jade Lee (taekwondo), Kierra Scott (soccer), Emiliano Brienza (soccer), Matteo Polisi (soccer), Jaya Rampuri, Coquitlam Little League All Stars (baseball), Urith Hayley (track and field), Larry Moro (soccer) and Kiyo Breiting (tennis).

Ultramarathoner raises over $2.8K for COVID relief in India North Delta’s Kaushal Parikh achieved all of his goals after a 90-kilometre ultramarathon on June 13, raising more than $2,800 for pandemic relief in India.

Parikh competed virtually in the 2021 Comrades Marathon, an annual race held in South Africa dubbed “The Ultimate Human Race.”

Parikh was set to travel there in 2020 to compete but the COVID-19 pandemic forced the event’s cancellation. When the in-person event was again cancelled this year, Parikh Parikh made the decision to compete virtually.

Parikh ran the race’s entire 90-kilometre distance on North Delta Secondary’s new 400-metre track – that’s 225 laps – in eight hours, 50 minutes. As well, he achieved two other goals he had set for himself: running 600,000 kilometres between May 1 and June 15 (he ultimately ran 684,000), and raising $1,500 for Save the Children’s India COVID19 Crisis Fund, a goal he nearly doubled by raising $2,840.

For Cloverdale Minor Hockey Association, a “grads versus grads” game was the first real on-ice competition since November.

The fun scrimmage took place Tuesday, June 15, on a rink at Surrey Sport & Leisure Complex.

FRY, Hilda Helen June 26, 1921 - June 2, 2021 Hilda passed away peacefully at Langley Lodge the morning of June 2. She leaves behind her two daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Hilda was born in Wolsely, Sask. and was the last of a family of 11.

Hilda loved her town of Cloverdale where she attended Cloverdale United Church and bowled twice a week into her nineties. She will be missed by old neighbours, friends and her family.

Another outstanding group of Surrey School District elementary students impresses businesses in annual Surrey Picasso Art Project Students from Bonaccord Elementary school participated in the Surrey Picasso Art Project this year. I had the pleasure of speaking to the students and teachers via Zoom, guiding them through the process of creating artwork for local businesses. The students patiently learned about how the single most important thing a business needs to survive is customers – and how they can acquire these customers.

One of the ways was through catching the attention of prospective customers with eye-catching artwork that meets the business-owner’s criteria and has a call to action in it.

Each of the businesses in this feature were impressed by the quality and detail of the artwork they received and they say they had a very tough time choosing just one.

1 SPY A DEER (AND MORE) Deer, salmon, eagles, ducks and other animals can be spotted at Surrey Lake Park, a natural area that features a human-made lake, a 1.5-kilometre nature trail and more. Opened in 2002 at 7500 152nd St., the lake park is a haven for many animals, but dogs aren’t allowed. The lake was created to help control flooding, and varies in size depending on the time of year and the amount of rainfall. For bird watching, download a free Merlin Bird ID app for your smart phone to help with identification.

3 MAKE A RACKET Surrey boasts 65 public outdoor tennis courts and 54 pickleball courts, at 27 parks across the city. They’re all listed on surrey.ca/ tennis-pickleball. For indoor play, check out Surrey Tennis Centre, where a 42,000-squarefoot “bubble” includes six indoor courts for games and lessons, on 144th Street, near the old Surrey city hall.

Located on Blackie Spit at Crescent Beach, Surrey Sailing Club has promoted the sport of sailing since 1970 and offers a Sail Canada training program for people who want to get out on the water. “Our members enjoy excellent sailing, kayaking and paddleboarding, all within a friendly atmosphere,” notes a post on surreysailingclub.bc.ca. “With the exception of our sailing school boats, all of the boats and watercraft at the club are member-owned.”

6 GO GEOCACHING Tynehead Regional Park (16689 96 Ave.) is a great place for geocaching, a kind of digital “treasure hunt” with the goal of finding hidden containers known as “caches” or “geocaches” using a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver.

In Surrey, approval by civic authorities is required to place a geocache in parks and other public areas, according to information at surrey.ca.

7 7 WALK ‘SEASONS IN THE PARK’ Artist John Webber and Epic Productions created “Seasons in the Park,” a light-based artwork on the pedestrian and bicycle overpass that crosses Highway 1 from Tynehead Park to 168th Street. Part of Surrey’s Greenway Network, the bridge changes colours with the season and different events.

8 PICNIC AT SURREY BEND Three picnic shelters – named Hawk, Warbler and Wren – are built at Surrey Bend Regional Park, and reservations can be made by phone (604-432-6352) during office hours Monday to Friday. The park is a great place to view wildlife and Fraser River activity, at 17775 104 Ave. The site is one of the few remaining large, un-dyked sections of the lower Fraser.

13 Opened in 2020, a four-lane walking track at Bear Creek Park is used by active people during all hours of the day. The lit facility, off 88th Avenue, is designed to separate those who like to walk from athletes in training on the older oval track nearby.

10 CATCH A FISH Surrey offers a few great spots for recreational fishing and hosts educational programs for those who are new to the sport.

11 VISIT EXOTIC ANIMALS South Surrey’s Urban Safari Rescue Society is home to a range of exotic animals surrendered to the caretakers, and the number of critters is always growing. Frogs, snakes, spiders, birds, lizards, fish – you name it, it’s there, for tours, camps, courses and more. Some of the animals have been seen in feature films and TV shows, too. 12 SIP SOME WHISKY Located in the business park at Campbell Heights, Mainland Whiskey boasts a cocktail lounge, a shop and, on select days, an outdoor dining area/lounge with live music. Influenced

by American “moonshine” recipes, their smallbatch corn whisky and whisky liqueurs are made with organic ingredients. The colourful names include Time Machine, “aged in an electric box, wired with time-altering devices.”

13 ENJOY A SUNSET Crescent Beach is a go-to spot for sunset watchers, along with nearby Blackie Spit. Grab an ice cream cone or bowl from a place on Beecher Street (Martino’s or the Red Baron), stroll to one of the beached logs, gaze west and enjoy the evening show. The history of Crescent Beach dates back to 1909 when development of the Great Northern Railway first made the beach easily accessible to the public. By 1913, permanent dikes were built, and now form a pathway that traverses the waterfront.

18 PLAY AT ‘JUMPSTART’ 15 SOUND A SIREN One Newton-area firehall is home to “Call of the Siren,” an “interactive tribute to firefighters” where people can turn the crank on the outside of an arch to create a soft and subtle siren sound. Artist Luke Blackstone created the attraction at Firehall No. 10 (7278 132nd St.) back in 2007. “While the audio and visual siren references remind the community that firefighters are always on duty in the event of an emergency, the shape of the arch also suggests protection – again, a tribute to the public-safety role that firefighters play,” says a post on the city’s website (surrey.ca).

16 CLIMB WALLS Surrey boasts several indoor climbing centres, including Coastal Climbing in Newton, Project in Cloverdale and The Hive in Bridgeview. During the pandemic, the gyms have restricted capacity and offer time-specific bookings; call for the latest updates.

Newton’s Unwin Park (13313 68th Ave.) is home to Jumpstart, an award-winning inclusive playground for kids of all abilities. Opened in 2019, the 12,000-square-foot playground sits atop a giant Canadian Tire logo and features double-wide ramps, sensory play centre, a “WeGo-Round,” slides with transfer benches, an OmniSpin spinner and more.

22 GET ROLLING Billed as Metro Vancouver’s largest indoor amusement park, the year-old Central City Fun Park features a roller rink with stringed lights overhead. Surrey offers a number of spray parks and water playgrounds for kids of all ages, from late May until late September, daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. “During open hours, you can activate the water system in a spray park by push buttons if it is warmer than 20°C outside,” says a post on surrey.ca. Facilities are located at Bear Creek Park, Bridgeview Park, Cloverdale Athletic Park, Erma Stephenson Park, Fleetwood Park, Goldstone Park, Hawthorne Rotary Park, Hazelgrove Park, Newton Athletic Park, South Surrey Athletic Park and Unwin Park.

Redwood Park (17900 20th Ave.) is home to the largest stand of Redwood trees north of the 49th parallel. It’s also home to thousands of tiny “fairy” houses placed in a clearing, not far from a replica of a treehouse once home to Peter and David Brown, twin brothers born to one of Surrey’s earliest pioneering families. In 1893, their father gifted them this large plot of land, logged and ripe for farming. However, the brothers instead filled the land with their favourite trees from around the world. The duo built a treehouse where they lived in solitude until their deaths, in 1949 and 1958.

Mud Bay Park’s waterfront is a place to see shorebirds in what’s considered “Canada’s #1 Important Bird Area.” The nature trail is nearly three kilometres long and takes about 1.5 hours to walk.

The park’s most spectacular feature is its view of Boundary Bay, which transforms drastically at different times of day. At high tide, seals and loons can be seen in the waves. At low tide, the table is set for a shorebird’s favourite feast when mudflats and eelgrass meadows are exposed to the air.

28 STOP TO SMELL ROSES

At Bear Creek Park, a poem is engraved on a large piece of granite, in English and Korean. The words of Rev. Dr. Byung Sub Van’s “Mere Water am I” address the universal theme of water “in its many forms, from raindrops to rivers to oceans, and through its many uses, from slaking thirst to producing power for factories. At the same time, the work uses the metaphor of water to celebrate social unity and cultural diversity.”

Rare plants, shrubs and trees can be found at Darts Hill Garden Park (1633 170th St.), a 7.5-acre paradise gifted to Surrey by Francisca and Edwin Darts in 1994 as “a showcase of 70 years of devotion, hard work and a pure love of horticulture.” With ticketed, pre-registered entry ($5), visitors can explore the site during public garden strolls, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on most Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until July 31. Highway 10. “A joint endeavour of the Surrey Columbian and its readers,” says a plaque, “this totem pole was erected in 1967 in observance of Canada’s centennial and to preserve the art and legends of the Salish Indians.” While you’re there, grab breakfast or soup at Occasions at The Pond.

31 MEET ‘BETTY’ AT RED RACER Central City Brewers + Distillers (11411 Bridgeview Dr.) is known for its beer and spirits, with tastings available in the area where branded merchandise (hats, clothing, glasses and more) is sold. Another attraction is the brewery’s Red Racer Roadside Diner, a permanent fixture at the Bridgeview-area landmark, and a nod to its most popular beer. On the patio, squeeze lime juice over the rockin’ chicken taco, or dip your Brew Fries into the house-made Betty Sauce, a yummy mix of mustard, ketchup, mayo and pickle juice.

32 SEE A TOTEM POLE Carver John Edward Neel’s “Surrey Columbian Centennial Totem” is located on a path near Surrey Provincial Court (14340 57 Ave.) and the old city hall, not far from the roar of vehicles on

Cloverdale Athletic Park, or CAP, is a popular draw for Surrey-area families. “The proximity to home is great,” Shaheed Devji wrote on Twitter, “but it’s mostly the variety that the park offers which we love. Bike park, playgrounds, water park, sports fields, courts, picnic areas, and washrooms! It’s a one-stop shop, which is nice for parents trying to keep kids busy.”

34 WALK A LABYRINTH At Fleetwood Gardens (15802 80th Ave.), a seven-circuit labyrinth offers an opportunity to quiet the mind and relax the body. In 2018, a special event marked the 10th-anniversary of the labyrinth, created in 2008 with the help of Diana Ng and others. Fleetwood Gardens is a popular place for wedding and graduation photos, too.

35 GET BOARD Surrey is home to eight skate parks, each designed to offer a variety of tracks and trails to suit all abilities. From the street and plaza terrain at Cloverdale Youth Park to the flow bowl at Chuck Bailey/Tom Binnie Park, skaters have some choices while attempting backside heelflips and other tricks. In Whalley, the One Love indoor skatepark is due open in August.

36 LEARN ABOUT REFORESTATION Explore B.C.’s birthplace of reforestation at Green Timbers Urban Forest, one of Surrey’s largest parks. It’s home to more than 10 kilometres of nature trails, a stocked fishing lake, picnic areas and Surrey Nature Centre. The land was completely logged by 1929, but the trees were soon replanted. After a long run as a forestry school and nursery, the land became a park in 1974.

Enter at Green Timbers Access Rd., in the 14500-block of 100th Ave., Surrey. A detailed history of the land is on greentimbers.ca, the online home of Green Timbers Heritage Society.

37 PLAY ‘500 UP’ Baseball fields dot all areas of Surrey, so pick a diamond and pack a glove, bat and ball. Newton’s Unwin Park is home to several ball diamonds and also a couple of open fields, making it a popular place for baseball. In South Surrey, Softball City is a big draw for leagues and large-scale tournaments.

38 SAY HI TO ‘THE SEA CAPTAIN’ At Surrey Central SkyTrain Station, “The Sea Captain” is a large wooden sculpture created by Marianne Nicolson and John Livingston. It’s inspired by a pipe from the early 19th century, carved by an unnamed master from Haida Gwaii. Hung from the ceiling, the sculpture “considers the history of travel and immigration to the coast.” It’s featured on City Centre Artwalk, a chance to discover public art along parks, pathways, SkyTrain pillars and civic buildings on University Drive in Surrey’s City Centre. This route is flat and wheelchair accessible with three SkyTrain stations along the way.

40 WATCH GLASS MELT Award-winning glass blower Robert Gary Parkes welcomes appointments to watch him work at his Loafing Shed studio. In 2009, the artist converted a portion of his Port Kells-area barn into a glass studio and installed state-ofthe-art equipment. Parkes and his wife Jeanette have since hosted a number of events there, when they can, including tours and workshops.

41 STROLL A RIVER’S SANDY BEACH Explore Brownsville Bar Park, which boasts

one of the only sandy beaches on the Fraser River. Have a picnic on the green space next to the beach, with views of New Westminster and the Fraser River. On the beach, kids can make sandcastles, collect rocks or even play a game of soccer as trains roll by, SkyTrain cars zip overhead, and cars motor over the old Pattullo Bridge, to be replaced soon.

44 PEDAL IN A PARK One of the region’s largest downhill mountain bike parks is located at Invergarry Park, accessed from Wallace Drive and Surrey Road. The “local treasure” offers a range of trails to suit various skill levels and ages, including some of Surrey’s most expert terrain – up to 25 metres of vertical, all flowing through the forest. Invergarry Park dates back to 1913, when the municipality began consolidating land for the conservation of the Bon Accord ravine and creek system.

47 GO BOWLING Roll a strike at one of several Surreyarea bowling alleys, including Dell Lanes, Scottsdale Lanes and Sandscastle Bowl Bar & Grill. Bowling is also an attraction at Central City Fun Park, a year-old entertainment centre located near Pattullo Bridge.

64 CHECK OUT MOUND FARM In Cloverdale off 168th Street, Mound Farm is a glacial feature raised above the surrounding floodplain and farming area.

The drumlin is covered by a stand of about 1,000 mature trees, the concentration of which is unique and rare in the area. Two wood-frame houses on site once belonged to George Snow and Bion Smith.

The tallest listed on surrey.ca is a 134-metre Douglas fir found at Bell Park, 18th Avenue at 136th Street. Other notable trees are featured in a Heritage Trees Brochure, also posted on the city’s website.
