‘We are that constant support’: A Trail nurse talks life in the pandemic Sarah Lord Living Here

Thea Whelan is a very busy professional in the healthcare field.

Thea moved to Rossland this September from Victoria, where she worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Since starting her new job in November as an LPN in the surgical department of Trail’s Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital, Thea juggles school as well studying as a first-year student in Selkirk College’s nursing program. There is no bridging between being a LPN and a Registered Nurse, so she must complete four years of training to get her registration.

Thea went through the pandemic onset transition while working in Victoria. It was a rather stressful time for her.

“There was a lot of changing information, a lot of changing ideas coming between the World Health Organization and the health authority,” she says. “We really changed. Personal protective equipment needed to be used, and we worried about running out, so there was a lot of scarcity. It was a huge transition.

It was a scary time.”

Things improved for Thea somewhat when she started working in Trail.

“Coming to the Trail hospital, all those things had been worked out. I felt a lot more relaxed working there.”

The hardest thing about nursing during COVID-19 for Thea is witnessing the extra hardships her patients face.

“People are still ‘normal’ sick. They are still dealing with life-altering surgeries and diag-

are lacking so much emotional support.”

Even people who are palliative (requiring end-of-life care) struggle more than usual, which is challenging for Thea to witness.

“It’s really hard for their families. Everyone is struggling without that support. If someone is palliating, they are able to have one family member, but that means that family member doesn’t have their support system. It’s a huge strain on individuals and their relationships.”

Thea notices that patients face loneliness, boredom and long periods of isolation without the social connections usually present during trying times in the hospital. Thea and the other nurses are doing their best to provide extra support, but it can be tricky because they have their duties to fulfill.

“As nurses, we are that constant support while in hospital. We are stretched so thin.

Nurses are having to see three to four patients and be that support system as well as getting all of the medical/clinical side of things done.

It’s pretty difficult.”

She notices that amongst her coworkers burnout is high. She has a sense of why.

“Nursing has always and will always be an emotionally draining job, and so having things like socializing, like a yoga class, helps us recover. Those are kind of absent right now.

The things outside of work that we fill up our cup. So it is something that I definitely see.”

Filling their cup to keep caring for patients Thea is concerned about some of the larger issues affecting our communities. She sees a connection between climate change and health, but she finds this connection does not

come up often in conversations with patients.

“When we’re going through a crisis, it’s hard to look outside of ourselves.”

Thea is concerned about the future of our isolated Kootenay communities, especially for people who require the support of mental health and addiction services.

“As climate change progresses, so too will the economy have to adapt. And I worry about this area and the socio-economic issues that are going to come if jobs leave the area. We really need to have more social support in the area to be able to move through the coming challenges.”

Thea believes that nurses can make a real difference in their patients’ lives, even now when their time is even tighter.

“I really love nursing. It feels good, even though sometimes it feels like you’re failing to be that person for people. You were the person there at 3 a.m., even before COVID happened. When things felt scary, when things felt lonely, you were able to be that support.

That’s something that I’ve always loved: feeling useful.”

Thea has ways of filling her cup.

“I have a really supportive partner and a pretty good social network, even distanced. So those things probably help, but I think what I’m struggling with when I’m really struggling is finding the task I can do, and the thing I can do to feel useful and to feel helpful to others is for me the thing that helps the most kind of get through it.”

Dr. Kyle Merritt works in the emergency department at Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson, where he is the current department head.

He also has a group practice.

That means looking after patients in clinic, hospital, and long-term care settings. On the side, he teaches University of British Columbia residents and students. Not to mention spending time with his wife Courtney and three children, Brynn, Leah, and Caleb.

Merritt is family oriented, born and raised in Castlegar.

His mom was a teacher, and his dad a family doctor who still practises in Castlegar today. Merritt grew up going to the United Church in Castlegar and still occasionally attends with his parents, who are active members. Their church is a vibrant, engaged community.

“That was definitely a big part of my experience growing up, going to church on Sundays and being part of that community.”

Health care workers needed to adapt to the ever-changing protocols and procedures over the last year, bringing mental and emotional challenges. The early pandemic was especially trying.

“In the early days, it was a ‘going off to war’ mentality that many of us had. Thinking about having to leave our families and what kind of personal risk we might be taking. There were significant stressors.”

For many health care professionals, fear and worst-case scenario thinking has posed challenges to mental well-being. For Merritt, this state of being is the new normal.

“Depending on people’s age and health, the health of their families, they perceive the threat of COVID differently. Overall, we’ve been quite lucky and haven’t had to deal with high numbers of cases.”

Although rural Kootenay communities are faring better than many regions of the province in terms of COVID case numbers, it has been a highly emotional time.

Small town professional, big picture COVID-19 caused Merritt to consider human health and its connection to where we live.

Deep into the pandemic, the smoke from wildfires was quite severe. He realized that wildfires are becoming a reality of life here in the Kootenays.

“This hit home for me.

Working in the emergency department in the fall and it was one of the days you really didn’t want to be breathing heavily outside, and then I was inside wearing a mask, and it struck me that as human beings we ruined the air outside and then we’ve ruined the air inside. During the COVID19 pandemic, it wasn’t safe to breathe the air inside.”

Since moving back to the Kootenays seven years ago after some years away, Merritt notices that life in the Kootenays is changing.

“I don’t have any recollection growing up of having my summers affected by wildfire smoke. Since I’ve moved back, probably half the summers at least have been quite severely affected by wildfires. It’s quite obvious to me that things are changing.”

Merritt worries about the health of Kootenay residents.

“Working in emergency, my anecdotal impression is that I’m seeing more people that are affected mentally by the smoke than people who are affected through their lungs.

The mental health component is just as big if not bigger.”

Patients with pre-existing mental health conditions can be significantly affected.

“People who are anxious do feel trapped and restricted, so that brings up people’s anxiety in general. For people that don’t have underlying mental health conditions, having the wildfire smoke impacting the daily ability to exercise or do things they like to do outdoors starts to have a major effect on their health. Just like we see with COVID, where people have become more isolated.”

Merritt is making a difference by talking about climate change to his colleagues, students, and medical residents.

He is hopeful that we can come together to take care of each other.

Procter’s delicious community asset is reborn Submitted by Columbia Basin Trust

At the Procter Village Café, the swirly cinnamon buns are topped with sweet, gooey icing — and are in very high demand.

When the café opened in August 2020, almost two years after Procter’s previous bakery had shut down, the excitement was immediate, with a socially distanced lineup stretching outside. Lisa Norris says, “The cinnamon bun craziness, it was insane!”

Norris is vice-president of the Procter Community Society, which spearheaded the effort to bring a bakery back to the community.

Located in the century-old Procter Schoolhouse — which the society has owned, on behalf of the community, for as far back as Norris can remember — the bakery had run under several owners for about 20 years but closed in September 2018.

Right away, the community knew what it wanted done with the space.

“It was unanimous that we wanted it to be a bakery again,” says Norris.

It wasn’t just that people couldn’t live without cinnamon buns. Rather, the bakery “really is an important part of our community,” Norris says, and served as a community hub in non-pandemic times.

This program supports good business opportunities that can’t obtain conventional financing; the organization must have a business plan that shows credible revenue, expense and budget estimates, and must be able to repay the loan. The opportunity must also demonstrate significant positive and measurable impacts in the community.

The society also benefited from financial and hands-on support from volunteers, local businesses, the Regional District of Central Kootenay and others. As a result, it brought the space up to modern standards, made it accessible, and equipped it with everything a café could need, right down to utensils.

What society members didn’t want to do, though, was be responsible for the cinnamon buns, and all the other goodies and tasks, themselves. “We’re just a small, volunteer organization,” Norris says, and the daily running of a café would have been too much extra work. Their goal was to own and lease the renovated space, not operate the café itself.

Luckily, Balfour-based bakers Amber and Andrew Estlin were keen on leasing the Procter locale and moving their business into it.

This business, called BAKE at the

Village, runs the Procter Village Café, from baking the goods to serving the customers. A small percentage of monthly sales will come back to the society; down the road, it will invest some of these proceeds into community initiatives.

“The society and community benefit directly,” says Norris, “and it allowed a new budding business to step in and have a go without all of the daunting financial commitments that can go along with a start-up.”

While the pandemic slowed down the renovations, the café was able to open on Aug. 1. The reception was “unbelievable,” Norris says. Beyond cinnamon buns, the café also sells treats like carrot cake cheesecake, meals like varying types of specialty pizzas and loafs like rosemary bread.

To attend to the influx of customers, it hired two summer staff.

Last summer outdoor seating proved popular. During chillier times, takeout has been the biggest draw. But, Norris says, “with the warmer months and outdoor seating just weeks away, this summer will no doubt be even busier than last summer.”

Overall, the café has “been a success story all the way around,” she says.

The people with cinnamon buns in hand will undoubtedly agree.

‘Selfish, arrogant’: Industry association blasts B.C. restaurants defying public health orders

An industry association says that restaurants defying the most recent round of public health orders should be fined and shut down immediately.

In a statement Sunday, the British Columbia Restaurant and Foodservices Association also gave kudos to restaurants that had adapted to the new orders, which shut down indoor dining for a three-week “circuit breaker” as COVID cases have reached all-time highs recently.

Two Vancouver restaurants, Gusto A Taste of Italy in Olympic Village and Corduroy in Kitsilano, remained open in defiance of public health orders, even after Vancouver Coastal Health issued closure notices on April 1 and April 3, respectively.

A video posted to Twitter appeared to show guests at Corduroy shouting “get out” at authorities attempting to enforce public health orders.

In an Instagram post, the owners of Corduroy said early Sunday that they would close.

“We have sold out of food and decided to close tonight and tomorrow to celebrate Easter with our little fam,” the restaurant said in the post.

History

McCallum Hill & Co. took out half-page ads in the Nelson Daily News in April 1911 in a bid to sell the former Durban Ranch. It worked.

The Durban ranch, later sold to the Doukhobors and renamed Skalistoye, is seen in J.T. Bealby’s 1909 book, Fruit Ranching in British Columbia. The original caption read “A successful orchard amongst the stones, near Nelson.”

Second in a series on the history of Grohman Narrows Park In April 1911, the former Durban Ranch west of Nelson changed hands for $10,000 after the realtors who owned the property took out huge ads pressing for a swift sale.

The purchaser was Russian revolutionary-turned-Nelson real estate agent Konstantine Popoff via the local firm of McQuarrie and Robertson. Only four days earlier, Popoff had sold his 30acre ranch two miles downriver at Taghum to Doukhobor leader Peter V. Verigin on behalf of the Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood (CCUB) for $15,000.

Evidently Popoff used the sale proceeds to finance the purchase of the Durban Ranch.

Popoff immediately put some men to work pruning the 2,200 fruit trees on the ranch in preparation for the season’s operations.

However, he had no intention of keeping the property for long. Four days later, Popoff resold it to a second buyer, none other than Peter V. Verigin, again via McQuarrie and Robertson.

Verigin assumed Popoff’s interest under the agreement for sale with the Regina firm of McCallum Hill & Co., whereby the Durban Ranch would be paid for in $1,000 annual installments over a 10-year period.

In addition, Verigin paid Popoff a $3,000 “commission” for his troubles, with the Nelson Daily News aptly reporting that, Popoff had

Verigin forthwith “arranged to put a large staff of men at work on the ranch” to manage the orchard and develop the remaining arable land. Within two years, the Daily News reported the Doukhobors had made “extensive improvements” in clearing and planting the property into orchard and small fruit.

The Doukhobors named the ranch Skalistoye (Скалистое), meaning “rocky” or “craggy” in Russian. The name reflected the fact that despite its rich, fruit-growing soil in places, a large portion of the ranch was barren and unusable for agricultural purposes.

In 1917, Verigin transferred his interest under the agreement for sale to the newly-incorporated CCUB with $3,000 remaining owing. In the interim, McCallum and Hill assigned their own interest under the agreement for sale to John Allen Wetmore, former accountant of the Imperial Bank at Nelson, now Imperial Bank manager at Regina. In 1920, after completing the remaining payments to Wetmore, the CCUB finally received legal title to the Skalistoye property.

Vaccine selfies are the new trend, but also a reminder of unequal access

In the old influencer economy, sun-kissed vacation pictures and glossy group shots were among the most valuable forms of social media currency. Now, these pan-

demic-flouting posts would be cause for public derision.

But a new type of photo has taken their place to induce FOMO — fear of missing out — across the online sphere: the

vaccine selfie.

Photos of Canadians smiling beneath their masks as they roll up their sleeves to show off their bandages are increasingly cropping up on social media feeds as

the country’s immunization campaign expands to new segments of the population.

Experts say these selfies can encourage others to overcome their vaccine hesitan-

cy, but may also incite jealousy among those who aren’t eligible to book their appointments.

“I wanted everybody to know that I was doing well and it’s safe to take,” said Yeremian. “Being able to be part of the solution makes me really happy.”

Ryan Quintal, a registered practical nurse in London, Ont., said he felt it was his “duty” as a healthcare professional to post his selfie as a way of showing his online followers that COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective.

The 34-year-old said the photo even prompted some friends to reach out and ask questions about getting vaccinated.

“The photo kind of represented that your turn could be coming up next,” said Quintal.

“There is a light at the end of the tunnel.”

While Yeremian and Quintal say the reactions to their vaccine selfies were overwhelmingly positive, other social media users have prodding questions from commenters about how they qualified for their vaccines.

Dr. Karim Ali, director of infectious diseases for Niagara Health in Ontario, said post-injection selfies run the risk of fomenting a digital divide between the “have nots” and “have lots”

of Canada’s piecemeal vaccine rollout.

Ali felt this frustration in January as he saw Toronto healthcare administrators posting about getting vaccinated, while his front-line colleagues fighting an outbreak in Niagara had yet to receive their first shipment of doses.

“Vaccine envy was a real thing,” he said.

“You can’t help but feel dejected. You can’t help feeling that you are left out.”

Ali doesn’t judge people who want to celebrate their injections with their online followers, and believes influencers have a role to play in spreading the word about vaccine safety.

But stoking social media envy isn’t an effective public health strategy, he said, particularly when most Canadians are still patiently waiting their turn to be vaccinated.

“Think twice before you post anything,” said Ali. “There are so many people who are suffering and will continue to suffer until we get out of this.”

Krishana Sankar, science communication lead for the online platform COVID-19 Resources Canada, said vaccine selfies can be a powerful tool to combat online misinformation spreading unfounded fears about the COVID-19 vaccine.

Personal testimonials such as selfies can carry more weight than the word of

health authorities, said Sankar, particularly for members of marginalized communities who may have trouble trusting the institutions that have oppressed them.

“People tend to trust people they know,” she said. “A lot of the conversations around hesitancy actually starts within that bubble of family and friends talking about their concerns about it.”

“If one person gets the vaccine, and several other people are seeing that, it causes a trickle effect.”

Sankar also cautioned social media users against prodding selfie sharers about how they qualified for their vaccinations.

While she understands that people are curious about how to secure their own place in line, Sankar said it’s wrong to question someone’s eligibility based on assumptions about their lifestyle and medical history.

Many people who may appear young and healthy could be suffering from autoimmune conditions that put them at high risk for severe COVID-19 outcomes, she noted.

“A lot of people are very quick to judge and criticize others without actually having any idea of the backstory of what’s actually going on,” she said.

“A little bit of kindness can take us a far longer way.”
