Surrey Schools Superintendent Jordan Tinney says the district has been given approval to work with Fraser Health to provide vaccinations to its K-12 education staff.

Tinney tweeted on Tuesday that vaccinations would start March 24, with dozens of schools included in the district’s priority areas. He said the hope is all school-based staff would have their first dose by April 1.

When Hurricane Freda blew through Surrey nearly 60 years ago, photographers W. W. Hastings and Stan McKinnon were quick to document the destruction caused by the strongest storm ever recorded to hit the Pacific Northwest.

On that Friday, Oct. 12, 1962, Freda knocked down power lines, smashed some buildings and claimed the life of at least one Surrey resident.

Highways worker Bill Sands was killed when a log was flipped into the air by the sudden release of wires, near Highway 10 and 192nd Street (Latimer Road), according to a Surrey Leader news story at the time.

“Telephone, Hydro, road crews and volunteer firemen worked through the night and all day Sunday, answering calls and getting a start on the stupendous job of getting essential services rolling again,” the newspaper reported.

“The miracle was that no one has been injured trying to handle power lines.”

For many residents, power was cut for up to a week, and schools were closed due to structural damage and a lack of electricity.

Author K. Jane Watt’s 2017 book Surrey: A City of Stories includes memories of some who remember Freda’s destruction.

“I remember that they closed the school and, I believe, I was at Johnston Heights Junior Secondary at the time,” recalled Joanne Clayton. “And we had to walk home in that hurricane. To me, as a child, it did not seem as severe as people were talking about on the news and things like that. The newspaper later gave a more descriptive idea of it. But, it was windy and it was wet and we had to walk home because everybody’s parent was at work and there was no other way for us to get home than walk in the driving rain. And so we did. A group of us got together and sort of faced the wind and walked home in it.”

Another Freda memory, from Yvonne Abernethy: “We had two children at the time and we were without power for, gosh, I guess, a week. And, of course, without power our fridge wouldn’t run, we had no electricity, we had no heat, there were so many trees and things down over the roads and the power lines and things. They took, gosh, weeks for them to get everybody back.”

“People talk about how COVID stops them from doing things,” he added, “but for me it was helpful, because I could do online school and the show, and after the filming I attended a pastry school in Las Vegas.… I just returned from there last week. My business degree ends next month, and now I am a pastry chef as well. My dreams are becoming a reality.”

Those dreams now include expanding his business and doing more TV shows – maybe doing his own one day, too.

Dr. Claudine Storness-Bliss estimates chronic pelvic pain affects about 20 per cent of women worldwide, and of those, about 50 per cent will develop endometriosis.

March is Endometriosis Awareness Month, and there’s still a lot of “under-reporting” when it comes to endometriosis, said Storness-Bliss, an obstetrician-gynecologist and pelvic pain specialist at the Surrey Chronic Pain Clinic at Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre.

“So many women will talk to their physicians and are told, ‘It’s OK, it’s just your period.’ That’s not quite true when it’s a chronic pain situation that keeps you at home,” she explained.

“Chronic pain is an issue that affects a high percentage of the population, and is unfortunately not well-managed,” Storness-Bliss said.

“It can involve many different organ systems and it’s often difficult to pinpoint what the causes it. You can imagine that proper diagnosis of any actual pathological issue is important and that’s where technology comes in.”

Surrey Hospitals Foundation has invested $128,000 to help purchase a new 3D-ultrasound machine for the clinic, which is now the only one

(Photo: Surrey Hospitals Foundation) in the Fraser Health region “with a specialty in treating pelvic pain and endometriosis,” according to a release from SHF. “Prior to having a 3D ultrasound, I had a 2D machine, which can help diagnose big masses and big problems, but the pelvic adhesions and the smaller pathologies are missed on 2D ultrasounds are now being able to be seen.”

Storness-Bliss said the technology has been around for about a decade, but it is “constantly improving every year.” She added the resolution is

clearer and she’s able to see the finer details.

“Now it’s become very precise.”

Jennifer Marchbank, a 56-year-old patient of Storness-Bliss, had been dealing with endometriosis for most of her adult life.

“For some women, it causes absolute extreme pain … For me, it was a combination of irregular bleeding, heavy bleeding and a lot of pain,” said Marchbank, a Surrey resident.

With the help of the 3D ultrasound, she said Storness-Bliss was able to properly diagnose her and she underwent minimally invasive surgery.

“She was able to get a good 3D-image, just scanning over my uterus and my belly,” she noted. “In the past, one of the treatments for endometriosis was a hysterectomy and that’s severe surgery.”

It also helps that Surrey now has a chronic pain clinic.

“Can you imagine? I would not have been comfortable travelling in a pandemic to go all the way downtown, nor would it be comfortable to come out for day surgery.”

Small businesses are ‘ready to adapt’

Businesses opening up during the pandemic has been a surprising trend This is the third in a fourpart series looking at how people in the community are rebuilding a year after the World Health Organization declared COVID19 a global pandemic on March 11, 2020.

hen Tony Kubek opened Truckin’ BBQ, a restaurant in Cloverdale, it was several months into the COVID-19 pandemic, but he didn’t expect a year later to be working in similar conditions.

“If you were to tell me back then that a year later we’re going to be standing in – not the same situation – but a very similar situation, I would’ve been like, ‘What are you talking about?’ It seemed shortterm in my view,” said Kubek, who also owns a location in Abbotsford.

Truckin’ BBQ started as a food truck business in the summer of 2018.

“I would just do all the big food-truck events, like the fireworks at English Bay, Canada Days, all the ones that travel through the cities,” Kubek noted.

“Then this, you know, stuff happened, and we had to completely change our business for the most part because there were no events for a year.”

Kubek said he participated in a bunch of drive-thru food-truck events early on

in the pandemic, but then an opportunity “fell into our laps” and he took over the Cloverdale location July 1, 2020.

The location had already been a restaurant, so Kubek said he closed for 30 days for some renovations but parked the food truck outside for business during that time.

Elizabeth Model, CEO of the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association, said she’s noticed several new businesses open in the downtown core during the pandemic.

“It did surprise me to see so many new businesses opening, and even in our specific area, when I drive around, if something has closed, something is reopening in the area,” she said. “I think people, they’re creative and innovative and they’re looking at new ways of doing things.”

Philip Aguirre, the executive director of the Newton Business Improvement Association, said small businesses are “resilient.”

“We will always find ways to be successful.

We’re always ready to adapt to the environment.”

Aguirre said businesses such as Sub Garden, Veneto’s Cakes and Pastries and Greco’s Specialty Foods “have all weathered the storm because the owners worked there themselves.”

Then there’s Espresso Café, he said, which was closed for seven months during the pandemic and has since reopened with fresh renovations and new owners.

“That has been a trend of new ownership, with businesses changing hands over the pandemic.”

Kubek said the biggest concern was safety.

“Just because dealing with food, dealing with staff, dealing with customers, there’s a lot of moving parts in the restaurant — in any industry, though, to be honest.”

When Truckin’ BBQ first opened, Kubek said the rules at restaurants were as “black and white as they are now,” adding there are now mask mandates.

The business model also changed in the last year.

“For the most part, everything was on your dine-in and people coming into your restaurant and serving drinks, coming for an experience and the atmosphere. But now most of your business is online, take-out, delivery and all that type of stuff.”

Meantime, Kubek said he’s “ready to get back to

normal, that’s for sure.”

“We’re struggling. Everyone’s struggling through this all together, right? To be completely honest with you, the only reason my doors are still open right now is because of this local community around me who have supported me through this,” he said.

“We have a decent amount of regulars and those who are still doing their best to support us.

We really appreciate everyone who is picking up takeout orders, rather than using the delivery apps because those apps are really tough because they charge us a large fee.”

With a small business, Aguirre said it’s about being resilient, but also a loyal customer base.

“Recovery is still slow,” he noted. “However, the business community is definitely optimistic that consumer confidence is increasing.

Model said there’s a “wave of people wanting to get back to going shopping with friends, going out for meals with friends, so that pent-up demand is all there.”

From what she’s been hearing and seeing, there could be a “huge shift to the other side” of people wanting to be in public spaces.

“I think it brings a great deal of hope and joy that the vaccine’s on the horizon and businesses, although different, will come to a level that is obviously advised by our provincial health officer in tandem with the government.”

Five mass COVID-19 vaccination centres – including ones in South Surrey, Cloverdale and North Delta – are being opened by Fraser Health, and are to be available to book appointments by the end of the month.

Vaccination centres at the South Surrey Recreation Centre (14601 20 Ave.) and Cloverdale Recreation Centre (6188 176 St.) will be accepting appointments on March 29, while the North Delta Recreation Centre (11415 84 Ave.) begian its booking process Tuesday.

A testing and immunization centre at the South Surrey Park and Ride – with vaccinations done by drive-thru appointment only – is already open.

This comes as provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry confirmed B.C. is entering its third wave of the pandemic.“We ask about whether we’re in the third wave, it really is,” Henry said. “We’ve come down from the peak of our second wave, but we have levelled out for many weeks now and it’s a slow and steady increase.”

B.C. currently has just over 10 per cent of its population vaccinated with the first dose, not nearly enough for herd immunity.

Henry added there has been a “concerning” increase in the number of younger people ending up in hospital or intensive care due to the virus.

“What we’re seeing is that people in our community, younger age groups, requiring hospitalization and needing to be hospitalized for longer periods of time.”

She noted while the risk is still much higher for seniors and other older people, the younger people who are ending up in hospital are requiring more time in the ICU. “We have seen several young people in their 30s and 40s who’ve unfortunately, tragically been severely affected by COVID.” Nick Greenizan, Katya Slepian, Tom Fletcher

SSC petition is pointless

E

ver since we began rocking on our teeter horses we’ve been honing our skills at persuading higher authority.

“Dad, Billy’s not sharing his toys!”

“Mom, Suzie keeps wearing my blouses.”

Supertramp – that’s a monster progressive rock band from the 1970s, for those youngins out there – even got a hit tune out of it, instructing us to “Write your problems down in detail, and take ’em to a higher place.”

In the adult world, it’s the petition that’s replaced tantrums as the chosen vehicle

whereby most people attempt to sway the opinion of decision makers.

Sometimes this works, such as the campaign that led to the defeat of the harmonized sales tax.

More often than not, though, it seems petitions typically fall on deaf ears because the decision makers have already decided where they land on the topic.

Take, for instance, the Safe Surrey Coalition’s council majority stance on extending 84th Avenue from King George Boulevard to 140th Street.

Mayor Doug McCallum’s

slate has already, by way of a five-to-four vote, decided to make this project so.

And yet, oddly enough, the SCC in social media is also encouraging people to sign its petition to “Support the New 84th Road Connector.”

Seeing as the decision has already been made, by the SSC, what’s the point of the petition? Persuade us that we’re right?

It’s like putting the wagon in front of the horse.

And if you think that’s kind of strange, well, you would be “Bloody Well Right.”

Rising taxes a curious thing, considering reduced services Frankly Speaking Frank Bucholtz

It’s a curious thing that, at a time when municipal services are significantly curtailed, taxes keep going up.

Surrey has already passed its 2021 budget, with a 2.9 per cent tax increase. Council also boosted the capital parcel tax from $100 to $300 per property, so some councillors say the effective tax increase is actually between 11 and 14 per cent.

Delta is considering a 2.9 tax increase, while White Rock is considering a 4.28 per cent tax increase.

Meanwhile, most municipal recreation facilities remain closed,

or open in a very limited fashion.

Hundreds of staff members have been laid off, and access to services – even at city halls – is limited.

One White Rock couple found this out the hard way. They had called city hall, trying to make an appointment to get parking passes. Their call was not returned after several days, so they went to city hall – but could not get in, and could not even make an appointment for a future date while talking to a city employee over an intercom.

The Surrey budget has come in for a lot of attention, largely due to the continuing controversy over the new Surrey Police Service. Other areas of the city’s budget have been cut, which some say is to help pay for the new police force.

yet there is no set date for the new police service to take over.

Chief Norm Lipiniski has been hired and will receive an annual salary of $285,000, plus potential bonuses. Also hired are three deputy chiefs, three superintendents and six inspectors. How and when the rest of the police force will be hired has yet to be properly explained.

Some will certainly come from the current ranks of Surrey RCMP and other local RCMP detachments, and some from municipal forces in the Lower Mainland – but will that be enough?

There certainly is not enough time for the rest of the force to receive training at the Justice Institute, which is required for new municipal police officers. Nor should the new police force be mainly made up of new recruits. A large police force needs to have a good

mix of experienced and newer officers.

The lack of transparency about the total cost and make-up of the new police service has fuelled a lot of suspicions and rumours among Surrey taxpayers. While the police board has released some information, a lot of the details remain unknown.

The parcel tax increase in Surrey, which was approved by council in a 5-4 vote, is supposed to fund a new sports complex in the city centre area to replace North Surrey Recreation Centre.

It is also supposed to fund some park improvements. City parks are among the few city services that have been completely open this past year – and they are being more utilized than ever.

high. Given the lack of services available this past year, this is an accurate criticism. However, city costs – particularly wages – go up every year, pandemic or not. Other services also cost more, just as they do for everyone else.

It is questionable whether the vast majority of taxpayers – property owners, businesses or renters – pay much attention to tax increases. Few compare their tax bills from one year to another. Property owners pay far more attention to their annual assessments (mainly to see how much their property value has gone up) than they do to their tax bills.

That’s a big reason why cities can, and do, boost taxes each year.

Gracie loves my Jeep.

She loves any vehicle, really – especially ones that deliver her black-and-tan self to the Clayton off-leash park or the Cloverdale McDonald’s for a cup of vanilla soft serve. Gracie also loves the front seat, and she’s stubborn, as most one-year-old mini-dachshunds would be.

And I love to spoil my Gracie.

All of this is a terrible combination, especially for someone who is about to espouse to you the dangers of distracted driving.

And I will have to admit, there has been a time or two I have driven the few blocks from doggie daycare (which I now call school since that she is eight in people years) with my little princess on my lap, her snout either hanging out the door or smearing up my newly cleaned window.

Bad idea – I know, I know. Gracie is small but it doesn’t matter.

It’s not safe for anyone – me, her or other people on the road. And, to think, before I became a dog person, I used to silently cuss out drivers for doing the same thing.

As drivers, we display some curious habits, don’t we? Some are gross. Some are potentially distracting. Many are downright dangerous.

Today, it’s become alarmingly easy for our attention to sway while behind the wheel. We have smart phones, pets, $10 lattes, GPS screens and more. And when I say more, boy do I mean more.

Just ask Constable Alex Berube, an RCMP media relations offi-

cer with Greater Victoria’s West Shore detachment.

“We see, more often than you would think, people eating full-on meals, lunch or breakfast, with cutlery and everything,” Berube told Black Press Media’s Dawn Gibson. “It’s scary because you will see them steering with their knee, holding a cereal bowl in one hand and a spoon in the other.”

I’ve seen a woman do this too, a few months ago on 64th Avenue.

But wait. It gets worse.

On March 15, Gibson reported, West Shore RCMP tweeted that they stopped a vehicle that was being driven erratically, and the driver explained it was because she was removing her bra.

Berube told Black Press he’s often seen men shaving their faces, women doing their makeup, and people reading books while driving.

“It’s not just a brochure or a magazine either, it’s been full-on novels.”

While some may find these stories somewhat amusing, it’s important to remember how dangerous these behaviours are.

On Sunday, three people, inclcuding a five-year-old girl, were sent to hospital in what police say may be a tragic case of distracted driving.

Surrey RCMP said an SUV drove up onto the sidewalk in Strawberry Hill and hit three people in front of a bus stop.

Police said the driver of the vehicle is a Class 7 (learner) who was under supervision at the time of the crash. (See story on A21.)

Distracted driving is one of the largest causes of collisions, injuries, and deaths on Canada’s roads. The Canadian Automobile Association says people who drive distracted are eight times

more likely to be in a crash or near crash event compared with non-distracted drivers.

And stats suggest distracted driving is responsible for 22 per cent of fatal car accidents involving people between 16 and 21, or one in five youth killed in crashes every year.

Of course, the most common reason for people taking their eyes off the road is due to cellphones.

Canadians say that texting while driving is one of the biggest threats to their personal safety on the road, CAA reported in 2020.

And the National Safety Council said in 2019, mobile phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes every year.

We should all know by now that phones are a distraction to drivers. But back to our pets – what exactly are the rules about having them in the car?

Police say that having pets, objects and passengers obstruct a driver’s view out the front or side windows is considered a distraction.

Having a large dog in the passenger seat blocking the window could lead to a ticket for driving while the view is obstructed – an infraction that brings a $109 fine and three penalty points. And a driver trying to control a pet running around in the vehicle may receive a $368 ticket for driving without due care and attention.

That would buy a whole lot of kibble and kong treats.

Sorry Gracie, from now on, you’re buckled up in the back seat. Don’t worry, Dad will still get you your ice cream.

Provincial Agriculture Minister Lana Popham has strong words for Surrey council for dissolving the city’s “longstanding and well-respected” Agriculture and Food Policy Advisory Committee.

“I am disappointed that the city leadership did not seek dialogue nor public input prior to the planned committee re-assignment,” Popham wrote in a letter to Surrey council on Feb. 23. “It was brought to my attention than not even the members of the AFPAC were aware of the imminent dissolution of the committee.

“Please be reminded that municipalities with the intention to restrict or prohibit agriculture within a farming area may need to become ‘regulated’ under Section 553 of the Local Government Act,” she wrote.

Popham said committees such as the AFPAC provide “invaluable” input to civic governments to make sure planning and decisions are consistent with local government’s obligation to support agriculture in accordance with the Agricultural Land Commission Act and Local Government Act. On Dec. 7, the Safe Surrey Coalition majority on council voted to dissolve the AFPAC and fold it, along with the Environment Advisory Committee, into a new Agricultural, Environment and Investment Committee with Councillor Allison Patton as its chairwoman, Councillor Mandeep Nagra as its vice-chairman, and also Councillor Jack Hundial plus three community members.

The agriculture minister called the new joint committee “concerning” and noted that ministry staff advise her having only three experts between the two disciplines

“will not likely provide adequate representation for Surrey’s diverse agricultural community.”

Patton in reply said it’s hard to comment “at the moment” because she hadn’t spoken to city staff yet about Popham’s concerns.

“I may have skimmed the letter but I’m not sure it was brought to my attention, no, not yet.”

The new committee has met twice, Patton said.

“The good news is this committee doesn’t want to do anything to restrict agriculture, so I think that in time perhaps she can observe the committee and perhaps adjust her viewpoint over time if she feels that’s warranted for her,” Patton said. “A lot of the farmers want improved productivity, and local farm-to-table and produce and other products, so we’re looking at how can we help these farmers to do that.”

I mean the city is a product of the province and I think people sometimes tend to forget that.

“So for the minister to come out and issue really such a stern letter should be a clear indication that I don’t think she’s too happy with the decision made by the mayor, and secondly, there will be oversight provided,” Hundial said.

“Once she invokes those powers, under the Act,” he said, it’s “more complicated and laborious” for applications coming out of the city to deal with agriculture “and also the decision-making process around when you start looking at land and the uses, or ALR land.”

The BC Prosecution Service announced the charges earlier this month against Surrey RCMP Constable John Tsonos and RCMP

More than two months has been set aside for the trial in B.C. Supreme Court of three people charged in connection with the 2017 killing of Bhavkiran Dhesi.

The 19-year-old’s body was found just after midnight on Aug. 2, 2017, when police responded to a report of a burned SUV in the 18700-block of 24th Avenue in South Surrey.

In May 2019, police began a series of announcements of arrests

and charges associated with the case, all involving members of the same family – Harjot Singh Deo, Gurvinder Singh Deo, Talwinder Khun Khun, Manjit Kaur Deo and Inderdeep Kaur Deo. Court officials on March 17 confirmed that Harjot Deo, Gurvinder Deo and Khun Khun are scheduled for trial beginning Jan. 24, 2022, in New Westminster, and that they elected during a March 11 appearance to be tried by judge alone.

New owners Pali and Pammi Gill have restored the vibe of coffee culture in Newton with a completely renovated and restored Espresso Cafe. They are welcoming you back to enjoy a cup, delicious freshly made panini or sweet, and share a smile.

It might have been unusual timing to buy a coffee shop just before Covid hit. And the Kaur Gill’s might have been encouraged by people not to do it.

But a dream is a dream. Over the years, Pali was a regular patron. When the opportunity to buy the store came up, Pammi had some great ideas on how she thought the Espresso Cafe could reopen to serve the Newton Community better that they are growing to love. And Pali, her husband said, “I’ve learned that when Pammi has a good idea, I may not agree at first, but I generally learn, she’s right,” he said with a smile.

They’ve received many compliments from people about the new look. “They tell me it’s got a Vancouver coffee shop vibe,” Pali said. The bright white wainscoting and black and grey decor is fresh and modern.

They are still offering the much-loved brew that the returning regulars loved, who appreciated the select organic Arabia fair trade beans, South American shade-grown from small coffee producers. The small-batch coffee provides a fruity, rich coffee that is smooth and enjoyable, whether you’re a cream or no cream kind of drinker.

A close second favourite is their Chai Tea Latte, which

sets them apart from other places that offer chai tea. It’s got Pammi’s special touch which Pali promises, that once you’ve tried it, you’ll be back for more. It may even change you from a coffee drinker to a chai lover.

Wendy Scott was a former patron who was the inspiration the delicious frappe, tweaked by a few suggestions, which became a real favourite. Even in the cold days of spring, we’re selling quite a few “Wendy’s Frappes.” he added.

The coffee shop also offers baked goods and in-house freshly made paninis. Some of the offerings are gluten-free, and there are lactose intolerant options available for their drinks. Pali is on the hunt for even more gluten-free options.

Their panini list is very extensive, with many vegetarian choices available.

“We’re loving getting to know our customers. It’s important to us to know what they like, and when they come in, if we can remember their order from last time. “People may forget what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel.”

Pali said.

Like most Newton businesses, Espresso Cafe is looking forward to the day when groups of friends can meet safely.

“We miss the groups of people who made our place their own but recognize the importance of following Dr. Henry’s mandate. We follow to the letter all of the current Covid-19 regulations for businesses.”

It’s essential to keep in touch, so Pali is updating their Facebook and Instagram page every day with Espresso Cafe’s “Positive Thoughts” which has an inspirational message every day in the shop and is posted online. Police in Surrey say distracted driving may to be blame after an SUV drove up on a sidewalk and hit three people, including a five-

year-old girl in Newton on Sunday afternoon.

A Black Press freelancer at the scene said a four-door Honda SUV with “L” and “N” magnets ended up on the sidewalk at a bus stop at 122nd Street and 72nd Avenue in Strawberry Hill.

RCMP said the driver of the vehicle is a Class 7 (learner) who was under supervision at the time of the crash.

Police said one of the three people sustained multiple fractures

Former Surrey council candidate Brian Young has lost a bid to have a judge toss out a defamation claim filed by developer Bob Cheema, who has close political ties to Mayor Doug McCallum.

Madam Justice Heather MacNaughton made the ruling Wednesday (March 17) in B.C. Supreme Court.

The decision, published on bccourts.ca, clears the path for the case to proceed to trial.

The lawsuit centres on six tweets by Young that Cheema

claims to be false and defamatory. Young denies this.

Young had sought dismissal of Cheema’s defamation claim on the basis that it is an action commenced to limit his participation in public debate on a matter of public interest.

Justice MacNaughton has ruled otherwise.

“In the context of the record before me, and the stage of the proceedings, I am satisfied that Mr. Cheema has established, on a balance of probabilities, that the harm he has suffered or is likely to suffer as a result of Mr. Young’s expression is sufficiently serious that the public interest

in permitting his defamation action to continue outweighs the public interest in protecting Mr. Young’s expression,” MacNaughton ruled.

In an earlier court filing, Young alleged that Cheema had told him “on or about August 2018” he had already picked the police chief for Surrey’s new police force – a deputy police chief of the Vancouver Police Department.

In a statement emailed to media, Cheema said he was pleased that the Supreme Court of British Columbia recognizes his right to protect his “legacy.”

Police in Surrey are looking for the driver of a dark hatchback that they say hit a 70-year-old man in Newton Sunday night.

Surrey RCMP say the man was hit at about 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of 144th Street and 76th Avenue. Police say the driver of the car did not remain at the scene or stop to help the pedestrian, who was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

RCMP say the driver is described as a South Asian man in his 20s, with a beard.

Concert-focused book emerges from a year of Facebook posts

Kevin Statham’s pandemic project has involved sorting through negatives and digital images of the more than 4,000 concerts and other shows he’s photographed.

On Facebook for a full year, with the hashtag #ForTheLoveOfLIVE, the former Surrey Now graphic artist has posted a series of “On This Day” photos and memories of musicians, comedians and other entertainers he’s captured with a camera since the 1980s.

Now, it’s all turned into a book project for Statham, an Abbotsford resident who manages Chief Sepass Theatre at Langley Fine Arts School, in Fort Langley.

As a freelance photographer, his work has appeared in newspapers and magazines near and far, mostly in Vancouver’s Georgia Straight.

The forthcoming book, iWitness, is a vehicle for Statham’s photos, stories and anecdotes from him and others – fans, musicians and industry peeps – in attendance at landmark Vancouver-area concerts both big-venue and small, featuring Nirvana, KISS, Metallica and many more.

His daily Facebook posts, which began March 19, 2020, with a look back at Bryan Adams’ 1994 concert at the Pacific Coliseum, have been cathartic for Statham and friends who deeply miss live concerts in the COVID era.

“I’ve had a lot of great feedback from people, musicians and others, who were at these shows, who appreciate what I’m doing, just for the memories,” Statham said. “Without concerts, a lot of people are just struggling with all of this, not doing what they love to do, going to see concerts. It’s been a way for them to cope with everything, I think.”

1987 at Harpo’s bar in Victoria and, most recently, in December for a virtual broadcast from Vancouver’s Commodore Ballroom.

There was a time when Statham shot 200 concerts a year, sometimes more, but he’s no longer that active in local venues.

“As I got older, it slowed down – you have children, your time gets busier, you know,” he said. “Plus, Canada’s media environment sucks. There are no entertainment magazines anymore, really, and none in Western Canada. It’s horrible, and it’s never been great for that.

“At this point in my career,” Statham added, “I mainly shoot shows that I want to – when they happen, and hopefully that’s soon. In terms of making money at this, it’s so difficult

now. The internet has crushed the ability to make any kind of living out of this, concert photography. There just aren’t enough outlets for it.”

Along with work on his daily Facebook posts, Statham has slowly pulled together the book in recent months, using his graphic-design skills. “It works pretty well for me,” he said, “because I can basically create a book that’s ready to go to a printer. It’s the approach I’m taking, but I don’t have a publisher yet. That’s what I’m looking for, and I’ve been using my time during COVID to put this together.”

As a template, Statham said he’s based iWitness on Gord Downie, the 2018 book written by former Straight colleague Steve Newton, who lives in North Delta.

“It’s the perfect size for what I want to do,” Statham said, “but I’ve also been told that it’s going to be an expensive book to produce – just the full colour of it, full bleed, and I also need really good printing because there’ll be a lot of two-page images. That may all have to change depending on who I find to publish it.… I’ve sent out a couple letters of inquiry, and you just sit and wait, and I keep working on the book.”

More than 200 pages are done, with more to come.

“I’m just going to keep going until I either run out of material or someone tells me to stop,” Statham said with a laugh. “I guess I could make it a 600-page book if I really got into it, but I think I could make something interesting no more than 400 pages.

“Hopefully it gets published

by Christmas,” he added, “but I’m not sure that’s possible. “I also want to do a gallery show of some kind.”

Four of Surrey’s annual “major events” will be held virtually this year, and one is cancelled for 2021.

The city’s International Children’s Festival is postponed until 2022, according to a post on the website for the springtime event, and it’s still too early to determine whether a physical event will be planned for November’s Surrey Tree Lighting Festival.

For now, online-only events are planned for Party for the Planet, Canada Day and Fusion Festival, according to Tanya Wenngatz, Surrey’s special events marketing co-ordinator.

“For the time-being, as of right now, our events will be held virtually only,” Wenngatz told the Now-Leader.

“With the tree lighting festival, that’s still be determined, exactly how it will be done,” she added.

“We will have a virtual component to tree lighting, and honestly we’re hoping for some sort of physical event for that one, but it’s just too early to say at this time.”

Last April, the Earth Day celebration Party for the Planet was cancelled only a few weeks after COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic.

This year, the event will be held virtually for the first time, on Thursday, April 22, starting at 5 p.m. on Facebook and YouTube.

Details about the event, presented by TD Bank Group, were announced on Thursday morning (March 18).

The broadcast will feature “environmental education for all ages through virtual workshops, informational videos about Surrey’s sustainable initiatives, music, dance, children’s performances, and Indigenous programming,” says a news release.

Music-making DJ Goddess charmed a snake and also the staff of Surrey’s Urban Safari Rescue Society during a recent video shoot.

The Vancouver-based Bollywood/EDM DJ spent several hours at the animal sanctuary on March 9.

“Bollywood came to Urban Safari!” the facility posted in an online newsletter. “We all had great fun

wrangling our animals and getting know the Goddess. It was great stimulation for the animals too. She did video and stills with snakes, lizards and more. If you are a photographer or film person working on a project and need a cool animal, let us know. We can help.”

DJ Goddess, born Jessica Dhillon in Prince Rupert and raised in the Surrey area, posted photos of the adventure on her Facebook and Instagram pages, which have a

combined 180,000 followers.

A boa constrictor named Maya was a star of the video shoot, which involved a decorated classroom and some photography, too.

“Can’t wait to show you what we shot,” the UBCschooled DJ/model posted.

She also posted a link for donations to Urban Safari, located in South Surrey at 1395 176th St. Some photos are also posted to the facility’s Facebook page.

PLAY Eagles’ 20-game ‘pod’ hockey season starts April 2 Surrey Eagles and other BC Hockey League teams start their abbreviated fiveweek season on Friday, April 2, with all 160 games scheduled to wrap up May 9.

Each of the 16 teams will play 20 games this spring, including an opening-night battle for the Eagles against the 2019-20 regular-season champs Coquitlam Express.

BCHL teams participating in the season have each been assigned one of five pod locations where they will

play the other members of that pod, with games played in Port Alberni, Chilliwack, Coquitlam (in Burnaby), Penticton and Vernon.

The Eagles will play in a three-team pod with the Express and Powell River Kings at Scotia Barn in Burnaby.

Food Bank on Wheels gets some help from SurreyCares for mobile hamper delivery

Over the past few years, volunteers and staff with Food Bank on Wheels have been on a mission to deliver food hampers to single-parent families and households of individuals living with disabilities.

Now, they’re getting some financial help from SurreyCares to hire a part-time driver for the group’s charity van, and also buy food for additional hampers destined for Surrey-area clients.

The $7,279 grant is the latest announced by SurreyCares Community Foundation, tasked with distributing the federal government’s $350-million Emergency Community Support Fund to local organizations during the COVID19 pandemic.

Based in Port Coquitlam,

Food Bank on Wheels launched its home-delivery service in the summer of 2018 as a way to help people who aren’t able to visit food banks, due to illness, disability or transportation issues.

“COVID-19 has reaffirmed the need for this type of urgent service,” James Silcox, director and vice-president of Food Bank on Wheels, said in a SurreyCares news release Friday (March 19).

B.C. pharmacists are readying to assist the province in its mass immunization plan by administering COVID-19 vaccines when the time comes.

On March 18, health officials added pharmacies to its list of approved vaccination sites – as

distribution ramps up to include 300,000 of B.C.’s essential workers including teachers, grocery store workers and police.

The decision to include pharmacists happened after “many weeks of discussions with the government,” said the B.C. Pharmacy Association in a March 18 news release.

“Next steps will be working with

the health ministry, health authorities and our members to determine logistics, the vaccines and their supply in a manner that, ensures the most efficient and effective delivery of vaccines to the most patients in the shortest time possible.”

The survey results were released March 11, marking one year since the World Health Organization labelled the COVID-19 crisis a global pandemic on March 11, 2020.

Sixty-two per cent of respondents said concerns about Canada’s vaccine rollout were contributing negatively to their mental health, while increased time with social restrictions (64 per cent) and continued uncertainty about the future (63 per cent) were the other top concerns.

For Martin and others in social work, the job is to connect clients to resources and help them navigate systems in order for them to receive the help they need.

“Even more, we helped people navigate through systems,” Martin said, “to figure out how we’re going to help people get food, how we can help them get lab work done, how will they get banking done when the banks are closed and they don’t have a computer to do that. So we navigated through those systems to look at ways to work in new ways, to not only keep ourselves safe but keep our clients safe as well.”

Social work must be done with

compassionate empathy, Martin underlined.

“We’ve been doing that in a disaster – and that’s what this (pandemic) was, or is, it’s a disaster,” she added. “It’s really about giving hope. I think at the beginning, that was a big question for many of us: Is hope ever going to come through all of this? And here we are, still trying to get through this and it’s going to be OK, we’re in this together, let’s be kind, let’s be calm – and yes, we’re really using what Bonnie Henry says,” she said with a laugh.

“In that way, it’s been about finding ground for clients who just felt like their life was, like, nothing – people losing their jobs, people having anxiety and depression.

They just needed some comfort and compassion to say, how are we going to get through, how to apply for EI, CERB and the different supports that helped them. A lot of them just didn’t know what to do, and that’s how we have helped.”

The City of Surrey’s transition to a municipal police service continues, although there is still no agreed-upon timeline at this point.

In the meantime, we continue to make improvements to our police service and increase our focus on diversity. Recently, we launched a pilot project to provide a better response to lower priority calls for service such as noise complaints, alarms and abandoned 911 calls.

We recognize that these calls have an impact on residents’ quality of life and, as such, we want to respond accordingly. We have also implemented a quarterly review of police complaint files to look for potential issues of bias, and we are

When the pandemic struck last year, technical institutes, colleges and universities across B.C. were forced to find new ways to deliver learning.

But for two Surrey trades training schools, whose students are sheet-metal workers, glaziers, painter decorators, wall and ceiling installers, drywall finishers and hazmat workers, it wasn’t as easy as just pivoting everything to Zoom.

“It was a very trying time,” recalled Jud Martell, training co-ordinator for the Sheet Metal Workers Training Centre (smwtcs.ca), in Port Kells. “We were caught in

the middle of the March shutdown with three classes in session.

“There was a lot of uncertainty, but we managed to limp our way through that, and everybody was safe,” he added.

Between online learning and reconfigured classrooms limited to just eight students, the school continued to move apprentices forward. Although an intake of 50 training spots was cancelled, a class of Level 4 students completed their Interprovincial (IP) Red Seal exam, which is the final exam in a typical four-year trades training program. Students who successfully write their IP become qualified journeypersons and can work in any jurisdiction in Canada.

“We got a stellar result where all 24 passed the IP,” said Martell.

“I’m not sure that’s ever happened, COVID, or no COVID.” The centre introduced a blended system in September, in which students worked onsite for a week and

at home for a week.

The centre also revised the programming so students didn’t need drafting boards when they went home, and it created AutoCAD platforms for theory.

Meanwhile, at the Finishing Trades Institute of BC (ftibc.ca) in Bridgeview, training director Paddy Byrne said the Industry Training Authority allowed them to shorten the Level 3 painting program, running in March, by one week so apprentices could write their IP exams sooner. One introductory course was cancelled altogether.

“After that was done, we pretty much shut everything down here for about two months,” said Byrne.

“We were like everybody else wondering what the heck was going to happen.”

Once things started opening up again, the FTI reduced the number of apprentices per class by 50 per cent and implemented now-familiar COVID-19 protocols including

“We redesigned our classroom to maintain distance between students. We reconfigured some of our mock-ups so everybody had an individual project to work on. It was important for us to ensure we maintained hands-on learning. Numerous classes have been run since that time and there hasn’t been a single exposure or transfer of COVID-19 at the facility,” he said.

“When we got to the end of De-

cember, we all collectively breathed a sigh of relief.

“We think we’ve kind of found our COVID-19 groove and it’s all hands on deck for 2021 with a full schedule of classes. I do have to comment on how adaptive the students have been and how willing to abide the protocols.

“They’ve all been terrific.”

Members of Sikh Motorcycle Club aim to distribute 60,000 face masks to B.C.’s frontline workers as part of Sikh new-year celebrations this month.

On March 17, nine boxes filled with nearly 5,000 face masks were dropped off at TransLink’s HandyDART facility in Cloverdale.

“Sikh Motorcycle Club celebrated the New Sikh Year in a different way this year,” says an email from the club.

“Sikh Motorcycle Club is delighted to team up with United Sikhs to distribute masks across Canada, (including) 60,000 masks here in B.C., which will be distributed to all essential frontline workers who are in constant need of masks during this
