The Stardust sign was removed from the 18,000-square-foot building when the rink closed in 2005, after 34 years of operation in that area of Whalley.

In the years since 2005, the single-storey cinder-block building was home to a Liquidation World store, Central City Arena (for eight years, from 2010 to early 2018), Integrity Now’s headquarters during the 2018

civic election campaign and, most recently, Surrey Christmas Bureau’s seasonal toy depot.

Have no fear, expanding SkyTrain from Surrey into Langley is a “key priority” for B.C.’s NDP government.

That’s the latest word from Rob Fleming, provincial minister of transportation and infrastructure, who sang the praises of what would be the first major rail project south of the Fraser in about 30 years.

“I wish I had an announcement to make today but what I can say is we have determined a pretty healthy, high level of interest from the federal government in what this project represents in terms of being able to ship people around, to relieve some of the congestion problems,” Fleming said.

“This is tremendous opportunity for us to make an investment that will be significant in terms of its scale but also the opportunity to try and accelerate it as best we can using the COVID economic recovery period as an opportunity in that regard.”

Moreover, 52.9 per cent want 152nd Street widened to four lanes from 40th Avenue to 50th Avenue while 51.7 per cent want 64th Avenue widened to five lanes between 176th Street and Fraser Highway.

Surrey’s top three intersections needing improvement, according to the survey, are 64th Avenue and 168th Street (74.7 per cent), 104th Avenue and 156th Street (73.5 per cent), and Fraser Highway and 184th Street (71.1 per cent).

As for public transit, 79.3 per cent of respondents indicated Surrey “should have and definitely

needs” rapid transit along Fraser Highway from the city centre to Langley, 67.8 per cent say the same for rapid transit between Guildford, the city centre and Newton on King George Boulevard and 104 Avenue while 66.7 per cent say there should be new B-Line bus service to South Surrey/White Rock.

Huberman asked Fleming to make a financial commitment to expanding SkyTrain all the way into Langley in the next provincial budget.

“We’ve always had an eye on this project and viewed it as a twophase project,” Fleming replied.

“What I would say is that we’ll continue to acknowledge and work with TransLink, knowing that they have skin in the game and a previous commitment, at least to the first phase of it. We do look at this project as an opportunity to accelerate the economic recovery through as expeditious a project as we can make it, so Ottawa has been informed of our prioritization of that. There still is a little tidying up to do though.”

The Safeway store in Whalley is set to close for good.

On Thursday (Feb. 18), staff were told that the longtime retail outlet would shut its doors on Saturday, May 29.

The Sobeys-owned grocery store, located at King George Boulevard and 104th Avenue, sits on prime land, just east of the towering Civic Hotel and Surrey City Hall.

It’s not yet clear whether the store will be re-branded or if the building will be knocked down for redevelopment of the site.

A Sobeys media relations representative confirmed the pending store closure in an email to the Now-Leader.

“The decision to close a store is never taken lightly,” the unsigned email reads.

Fraser Health needs to deliver 37,500 doses each day between April and November and is planning a “soft launch” in March.

The Fraser Health Region has 1.8 million people eligible for vaccination and of those, 31 per cent live in Surrey.

Meanwhile, the province is screening 70 per cent of test samples for variants – up from 15 per cent in January.

On Monday, deputy provincial health officer Dr. Reka Gustafson and Education Minister Jennifer Whiteside fielded questions from reporters, saying there is no evidence of transmission of variants in schools.

Of the 35 teachers so far tested for the variants, all have come back negative, Whiteside said.

Rough start, to say the least

I

f you’re feeling particularly generous, you might characterize what the Surrey Police Service is currently experiencing as bonus bad luck. This also applies to the board governing it.

Let’s consider the items.

First off, there’s a considerable campaign in Surrey to keep the RCMP in Surrey and shelve this fledgling Surrey Police Service. This campaign has been in relentless pursuit of fulfilling that mission for a couple of years now.

Second, four of nine Surrey council members are vehemently opposed to the policing transition and have done their level best to keep its shortcomings before the

public eye.

Just last week, two of those councillors, Brenda Locke and Jack Hundial, fired off a letter containing their grievances with the process to more than 1,000 elected officials in civic governments across B.C., warning them their respective communities could, financially speaking, be adversely affected by this endeavour.

Third, one member of the board, Harley Chappell, took it on the chin when photos of him posing with members of the Hells Angels after a funeral service in 2018 became an issue. Some say he should resign, but he has not. Also, Bob Rolls, who was on the governance and finance committee,

has resigned effective March 1, within seven months of Surrey Police Board’s first meeting.

Fourth, Chief Constable Norm Lipinski found himself with one foot inside a figurative bucket of tarantulas for setting up a $42,000 deal with a PR firm, when he was deputy chief of the Delta Police, to deal with that unfortunate situation in which his boss’s wife reportedly turned a garden hose on another woman.

Fifth, a policing transition of this magnitude has never been taken on in Canada before, let alone during a pandemic.

It’s all a bit of a cliffhanger, isn’t it?

McCallum’s about-turn on banning handguns is baffling SoLetItBeDone Tom Zytaruk

So let it be written…

Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum’s startling flip-flop on banning handguns this past week got me thinking about Tom Gill, one of his main rivals for the mayor’s chair during the 2018 civic election campaign.

While Gill was stumping as Surrey First’s mayoral candidate, he told me in September 2018 that he was prepared to make banning handguns “the biggest issue in the election.”

Indeed, it was a major plank in Gill’s platform.

“You can’t run for mayor, or council, and say you’re for public safety, and then turn around and say you’re fine with handguns in our city,” Gill told me in 2018.

“This issue requires leadership and determination because there’s no middle ground.”

In McCallum’s Safe Surrey Coalition’s platform, a handgun ban here in Surrey was no plank. It wasn’t even a twig.

“The criminals will not turn in their guns even if there is a handgun ban. It is simply foolish to think they will,” the SSC’s campaign literature read. You can still read it, at safesurreycoalition.ca Prime Minister Trudeau’s Liberal government has been contemplating such legislation for some time now. On Feb. 16 it revealed it will allow cities to ban handguns within

their borders, but fell short of imposing a national ban. McCallum issued a media release that same day, under the headline “Mayor McCallum fully supportive of a handgun ban in Surrey.”

He is quoted as saying, “I wholeheartedly support a handgun ban for the City of Surrey and I am directing staff to immediately begin work on a bylaw for Council approval as quickly as possible.”

For Gill, it was a whoa moment.

“Ironic,” he called it.

“It is ‘wait a minute,’” he said with a laugh.

I certainly thought so. I tried contacting McCallum to learn why he’s changed his position on this handgun ban issue, but only got so far as a terse, “Hi Tom, the Mayor will not be commenting further on his statement from yesterday” from

This also got me thinking back to the 2018 campaign trail when, during an all-candidates’ forum at the Civic Hotel in Whalley, McCallum reckoned back to his mayoral days of yore, telling an audience of a couple hundred people his style of mayoring is “open door.”

“I answered all of my phone calls,” the then-former mayor said of his previous nine years in office.

Again, what happened?

Incidentally, McCallum told me a good while ago, on one of the rare occasions I’ve been able to speak with him since his 2018 election win, that he plans to seek re-election on Oct. 15, 2022.

Recently, Gill told me there’s a “good chance” he’ll also be tossing his hat in the ring. Whether that’s

for councillor or mayor, Gill says, “I’m still trying to figure out what position. Am I going to run for the one position or the eight, I haven’t figured that out yet. Independent might be an option,” the Certified General Accountant mused.

“Some conversations have been happening, back doors, let’s see if there’s any folks from years past that re-enter the stage, so let’s see how that works out.”

Whatever the case, Gill believes Surrey will indeed have a handgun ban by then. “I think so.”

But what impact it will have on gang violence in Surrey, if any, is definitely one for debate.

The Editor, I write this in a mood of dismay over the apparent lack of planning by our NDP provincial government over the inadequacy of action plans for the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccines.

The lack of an action plan speaks volumes to the ability of the government to get on with an action plan. Everyone has been aware of the unique problems, where was the planning?

Trudeau has stated we will have vaccines to inoculate all Canadians by September. Our planners in Victoria say they plan on completing vaccinations by December.

B.C. has a population of 5.1 million and to vaccinate everyone

by Sept. 30 means vaccinations would have to be undertaken at 566,000 people per month.

Given the lack of planning, citizens should plan for the worst and hope for the best.

Dr. Bonnie Henry and B.C.’s Health Minister Adrian Dix have done a good job of soothing our citizens. It is high time John Horgan stepped up and took responsibility for an action plan. It’s time to stop politicking and get to work.

Too many words and not enough action. Let’s get moving!

This transition has been a mess – no referendum and no costs benefits analysis. Most people I know live their lives driving their well-tuned car, not spending big bucks to swap it for another with fewer options. The RCMP runs like a finely tuned, reliable and steady vehicle with all of its programs.

There is no benefit to this transition. The big losers here are Surrey taxpayers, residents and every B.C. citizen who expects evidence, data and standard process to be followed.

Not one person in the elected B.C. NDP government has acknowledged this or taken action in a credible manner in this charade.

Graffiti fines hurt victims

The Editor, Our Guildford neighbourhood continues to try to deal with our plague of graffiti.

A little work was done by the city on a few lamp posts and signs but now the city is adding insult to injury with letters demanding several fence owners deal with the graffiti – and if they do not do so within three weeks, the city will do it at a cost of $800.

These owners have already repainted several times but the vandalism is repeated.

A person has been arrested after a man was killed in an assault at a Surrey house.

The Integrated Homicide Investigatiom Team tweeted on Feb. 18 that one person had been arrested.

IHIT described the incident has an “altercation between (two) members of the same household,” which “led to one man’s death.”

“A tragic and isolated incident.”

Police say that shortly after 8 p.m. on Wednesday (Feb. 17), they were called to a house in the 5500-block of 125th Street for a report of an assault. Surrey RCMP say officers found a “critically injured” man outside of the home.

Suspect sought after woman ‘spontaneously punched’

Man hurt in ‘targeted’ shooting

Surrey RCMP is hoping the public can help identify a suspect in an assault that happened in the Guildford area on Feb. 16.

Around 8 p.m. in the 15300-block of 102A Avenue, “an unknown man approached the victim and spontaneously punched her,” according to a release from

Surrey RCMP Thursday (Feb. 18).

Police said the suspect fled on foot “immediately after” and the victim was taken to hospital to treat her injuries.

The suspect, according to the release, is described as Caucasian, in his 50s, about six feet tall, with a skinny build.

Police said he was wearing a yellow-and-brown checkered jacket with dark pants.

Surrey RCMP is investigating a shooting that injured one person on Feb. 16.

The incident happened near 145th Street and 82nd Avenue around 10:15 p.m. when police received calls of shots fired in the area, according to a release from Surrey RCMP. The release adds frontline and gang enforcement officers were dispatched to the area, but police have not yet said if the shooting is gang-related.

Police said when officers arrived at the area, they found a male “suffering from gunshot wounds.”

The release adds he was transported to hospital.

A Black Press Media freelancer on scene said the shooting happened on a “quiet dead-end street.”

The investigation, Surrey RCMP said, is still in its early stages, “but it does not appear to be a random act, but rather targeted at this male.”

Beach House summer season axed again, but eye on fall shows Alex Browne Black Press Media

Crescent Beachbased Beach House Theatre has made the decision to put its two main productions on hold again – at least until August of 2022.

But in an email to subscribers, Beach House’s board of directors and production team say they are keeping the door open for smaller seasonally-themed outdoor presentations later in the year, pandemic restrictions permitting.

The statement says the current status of COVID-19, and community health protocols now in place, mean the production schedule can’t be followed in time for the usual August run of the company’s shows.

The company produces two plays each summer in a state-of-the-art tent theatre at Blackie Spit. It originally announced productions of a modern adaptation of Carlo Goldoni’s The Servant of Two Masters and Debbie Patterson’s children’s theatre piece Magical Mystery Munsch for August 2020, only to have to cancel the season due to pan-

The statement says current plans for this year are to stage two outdoor events to reconnect with audiences in the autumn, in hopes that, by that time, some of the current restrictions will be lifted.

At Halloween, Beach House hopes to create an event in which “spine-chilling tales told by the fire (are) enjoyed by strolling audiences.

And, at Christmas, the company hopes to present an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

“Both shows will be festive and inventive in their staging and we think they will bring Beach House back in a new and exciting way,” the email says.

The statement notes that, while the

aim was to bring back The Servant of Two Masters and Magical Mystery Munsch for the summer of 2021, it has become clear the demands of mounting the productions, from now through the spring, could not be met.

“We are keenly aware that even if things ‘open up’ this summer, our work would have to begin much earlier, in a time when we still cannot gather,” the email states.

“Although it is so disappointing, safety must come first.

We want to get back to the beach and our beautiful theatre when everyone is safe, healthy and comfortable again.”

Surrey-raised goaltender Laurent Brossoit really likes playing his hometown Vancouver Canucks, apparently.

The Winnipeg Jets backup, 27, earned his second career NHL shutout last Friday night (Feb. 19) in Vancouver, a city where he recorded his only other nogoal game, back in December 2018.

This time, Brossoit stopped 29 shots in the Jets’ 2-0 win at Rogers Arena.

In a post-game interview with Sportsnet’s Dan Murphy, Brossoit was humble.

“I felt a bit out of control today, but you know, it was working out my way,” he said. “It was a bit of a battle for me, to be honest, but it was one of those games where you just had to fight for ice and the puck was hitting me.”

Asked about twice blanking the Canucks in little more than two years, Brossiot had this to say: “It’s just one of those things. I like being here, it’s home for me, and I guess I just have that extra little bit of energy to give and like I said, things were just working out my way today.”

Born in Port Alberni, Brossoit played minor hockey in Cloverdale before making the Valley West Hawks zone team in 2008.

He had suffered a heart attack following a brief battle with dementia.

Hans is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margot, son Ralph, daughter-inlaw Sandra, and granddaughters, Jessica and Sasha.

Because of COVID, a private funeral service was held in Surrey, BC. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer Society of BC.

JUSTASON, ROBERT ‘BOB’ November 22, 1937 – February 2, 2021 A Good Man is No Longer With Us… It is with deep sadness that we announce Bob’s passing at SMH, after a period of declining health, with his wife Betty and cousin Wray at his bedside.

Bob was predeceased by his parents Arthur & Mary & beloved stepmother Ruby, first wife Arleen, sister Marlene (Paul), grandson Joshua and nephew Jason. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Elizabeth ‘Betty’ (Van Emmerik), brother Ken (Margaret), sons Kerry, Kelly, Rob (Lisa), D-I-L Kelley, honourary ‘son’ Rudy Engels (Charm), grandchildren Codi, Carly, Casey, Meghan, Miranda, Zachary, Matthew, Kristina, and Robert, as well as 16 greatgrandchildren, many nieces, nephews, family members and friends.

Born in Vancouver and raised in Port Kells, Bob became a Master Carpenter during the 14 years he and Arleen raised their three boys around San Jose, California. Bob spent 40+ years in Surrey working as a Builder/Contractor, a testament to his strong work ethic, leadership, honesty and sense of responsibility. When Bob met Betty, a new chapter in his life began, and the family grew as grandchildren arrived. Working with shared values, a common vision and Bob’s incredible carpentry skills, they renovated their homes as well as several rental suites.

Bob lived a full and rich life. He loved his family and was proud of their achievements, and especially cherished his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved to ride his Harley every chance he got. He and Betty enjoyed boating and fishing in the Gulf Islands, RV’ing across Canada and Snowbirding in Arizona. Bob could often be found enjoying a drink while playing guitar and singing Country music. He also loved to cook, play Cribbage, do Sudoku and read books.

He touched the lives of many people along the way, as a mentor, friend, neighbour and landlord. Bob will be remembered by all for his hearty laugh, gift of gab, positive attitude, and generous nature, with a streak of stubbornness thrown in for good measure.

Bob’s determination and courage helped him overcome previous health challenges but sadly he did not prevail against his recent heart and COPD issues. His memory will be forever cherished. Due to Covid, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

With heavy hearts & in loving memory of a beloved, precious son, father, brother, husband & friend, we announce the sudden tragic passing at home of Shane Stephen Stone on Dec 13, 2020. He was predeceased by son Shane Junior (Mexico), Grandparents Violet (Fairfield) Stadel & August Stadel, Joyce (Wynder) Stone & Arthur Stone.

Shane was a very caring, and devoted family man who loved being a father. Shane had a close relationship with God & loved to study God’s word. He was never too busy to give a word of encouragement. As a young man he went as a missionary to Mexico where he married and spent the next 20 years.

Shane was a prolific talented & gifted artist in any medium. Nothing was too large scale, too small or too detailed. Shane was the youngest student at Vancouver’s Langara College art department at 12 years old. The majority of his work was created in Mexico where he opened his own gallery in Cuernavaca, becoming a celebrity. Shane leaves an abundance of original pieces and all will be viewable and to be announced. He created his own tattoos, painted on motorcycles, animals, birds, building murals, cars, far out, portraits, Aztec and much more.

Shane was technically / electronically inclined and many people will know Shane through his presence when visiting Canada helping his mother at their store Cloverdale Computers.

He leaves to mourn mother Carole (Stadel) Stone, wife Beatriz Stone, sons Derek Stephen Stone, Jacob Stephen Stone & now newborn daughter Alexia Stone, brothers Scot Stone (Nidia) & Sean Stone. Also left behind are nephews Jamie & Jayden Stone, Joe Nunes, niece Leticia Brooks, great nephew Lucas and great niece Aurora, sisters Heather & Holly Stone & father Stephen James Stone & many friends in Mexico & Canada.

Last spring, Mason Smith needed something to do.

His hockey season was over – his junior ‘B’ Abbotsford Pilots team did not qualify for Pacific Junior Hockey League playoffs – and school had moved to an online-only format as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

So, armed with knowledge he gleaned from a high-school entrepreneurship course – but absolutely no clue how to design and build a website – he started an online business selling highend kitchen knives.

“I was bored, so I was just trying to come up with something to do. I just thought I’d do it as a hobby, but then I started to make some serious money doing it,” said the 18-year-old Smith, who graduated last spring from Elgin Park Secondary.

“It’s something that I’d always wanted to do, but I‘d just never really had the time.”

With a few months before he would have to pack up and move to Saskatchewan for his since-delayed junior ‘A’ hockey debut – in the summer, he signed with Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Estevan Bruins – he set up to start his company, Dane Cutlery.

Organizers of Surrey’s annual SASSY Awards are planning an online celebration this spring.

The awards are hosted by Semiahmoo Rotary Club, City of Surrey and Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and the nomination period is now over.

The SASSY Awards (Service Above Self Surrey Youth) recognize youth, aged 15 and 21, who live, work or study in Surrey or White Rock.

Each award winner is given $500 to donate to a registered Canadian charity of choice, in addition to a $1,000 personal award.

Initially posted to YouTube for all to watch, the film is now “unlisted” on the website.

“It was public for a while,” Jiao explained, “but some people contacted me saying they didn’t want it showcased on YouTube. So it’s not available for people to watch, no.”

Years ago, when Jiao first arrived in Canada, she found solace at local libraries and immersed herself in books. She eventually overtook her peers academically, finishing pre-calculus while still in Grade 9.

Such study habits have also helped at succeed at UBC, including in the current online learning environment.

Grade 12 B.C. students looking to apply for a Beedie Luminaries scholarship can visit BeedieLuminaries.ca. With the 2021 deadline now passed, successful applicants will be announced in May. The program is open to students planning to pursue undergraduate degrees or diploma studies at any public university, college or trade

school in B.C. “I heard about Beedie Luminaries through a school counsellor and applied for it without having a lot of hope,” Jiao recalled.

“I’d gone through that process with other scholarships and I didn’t end up getting those. So it was a major surprise to get it, after submitting the application and going through an interview. I think being in a really calm mood really helped me with that application, because for the others I felt really anxious.”

Launched in 2018 with a $50-million donation from Ryan Beedie, the Beedie Luminaries scholarship will support 105 students in 2021.

Last year, students from 25 municipalities across B.C. won the award.

We’d like to say there’s nothing fishy about Kabir Vasudeva’s winning artwork, but it’s very, very fishy.

The Surrey boy’s drawing is among national winners of Goldfish Canada’s recent #FeedImagination contest.

As such, the five-year-old’s colourful artwork is now featured on a transit shelter located at King George Boulevard and 152nd Street in Surrey, in addition to 20 billboards across B.C., Alberta and Ontario. Kabir also won a $500 gift card for his efforts.

The cracker company’s ad campaign was created “to encourage imagination in the minds of Canadian children,” and involved a call for kids’ artwork and stories, “so that they would have an opportunity to show their work on a larger platform than their refrigerators.”

Kabir, a Kindergarten student at Semiahmoo Trail Elementary, loves to colour all day, according to mom, Sakshi Vasudeva.

The thing she loves most about Coastal City Ballet, she said, is that it’s a family – where everyone wants everyone else to succeed.

“When I’m dancing in the ensemble, I’m dancing with my friends.

And then there’s the cultural piece of it – the dancers in the company

“For Justine to make this work for us in a COVID environment – and still have it be a beautiful ballet – is amazing.”

Surrey’s Emma de Boer is aiming for new heights, now that she’s been recruited to an Ivy League school.

The champion high jumper plans to train and study at University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) next fall, following her current Grade 12 year at Holy Cross Regional High School.

De Boer is the top U18 female high jumper in Canada, with a jump of 1.72 metres during the B.C. high school track championships in 2019, when she was in Grade 10. Years earlier, in elementary school, the Cloverdale-area resident was introduced to high jump by a teacher at A.J. McLellan Elementary, and she hasn’t looked back.

“I loved it immediately, right from the

“I am a very hard worker, and all of my current and past coaches would say that I have a very high work ethic and am very coachable,” De Boer says in a profile posted to the Next College Student Athlete website (ncsasports.org).

“I am involved in the community by volunteering each year with my local Special Olympics track and field team and my own club’s young future track and field stars.”

Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic has stalled her training since last spring.

“Everything got shut down, so it was disappointing,” she said. “It’s been difficult, so I’m just getting back into it now.… There haven’t been any competitions since then, last spring. We’ve just recently been practicing again at (Ocean), and I’ve also been training on my own, too.”

She plans to study architecture at UPenn and hopes to live on campus in Philadelphia, if and when pandemic conditions allow.

“I’ve always liked to draw, and buildings fascinate me,” De Boer noted.

“They have such a great architecture program that I wanted to go into, tons of resources, and also the track program has had really good success with their high jump program. I’m hoping to be there in the fall, to be there in person, otherwise it might just be online classes.”

The products are shipped to him, and he sorts them and sends them out to his customers.

And then there was the website.

“I didn’t know a single thing about how to do it, but it was fun because it was new to me – I’d sometimes stay up until 8 in the morning working on it,” he explained. “It took a lot of time, that’s for sure.”

Smith – who was born in Rochester, N.Y. and has lived in Canadian and U.S. locales from Louisiana to Grande Prairie, Alta. before arriving in South Surrey as a teen-

ager – said one of the reasons he chose knives as his featured product was because he was inspired by the quality of an old set owned by his grandparents.

“They’ve used the same knives for like 50 years,” he said. “So I wanted to (create) something like that.”

On the subject of family, Smith noted that it took his parents by surprise when he told them of his business plan. Now, an entire room in his family’s South Surrey home is full of knives, boxes and shipping materials.

“It was kind of weird. They didn’t really know what to think at the start… but I showed them what it was about and how I was running it, and they were very supportive.”

He moved to Estevan in September to train with his new

teammates – the team played a handful of games before the season was halted when COVID-19 cases began to rise – and is now back on the Semiahmoo Peninsula awaiting word on a restart, but there wasn’t any lull in business, he said.

“I drove to Estevan and I just brought a big bin of knives with me,” he said. “And once I was there, all I needed to do was buy boxes. It’s the kind of thing I can do wherever I go – all you need is a post office.”

Smith grew the business while on the move, too – thanks primarily to social media.

“I ran it mostly through my Instagram account,” he said, adding that he hired Instagram ambassadors, who promoted and sold his knives through their own social-media channels, and received

Though his business is profitable and running smoothly, he said he doesn’t have plans yet to turn it into a full-time job – he still has designs on going to university, which is part of the reason he decided to move to Estevan.

The Bruins are set to host the 2022 national junior ‘A’ championships – a high-profile event that traditionally attracts many university scouts.

“Hopefully COVID doesn’t shut that down,” he said.

The class received donations from Vancouver Ready Mix (concrete for the pad), Country Lumber (wood needed to build), West Central Building Supplies (siding, door hardware, roofing materials and other miscellaneous building materials), Surrey New and Used (two metal exterior doors) and Sherwin-Williams (paint).

Engbers said with the school paying for the shed, and items either donated or “heavily discounted,” the class has raised about $2,000 for the school in Honduras.

The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport blends a rugged-looking exterior with standard four-wheel drive.

It’s made for off-road but will turn heads on the city street.

The bigger Bronco has removable doors and mud-loving road manners that will challenge the Jeep Wrangler for go-anywhere bragging rights. The Bronco Sport is winning head-to-head comparisons with the Toyota RAV4, particularly with taller drivers with better headroom. It also offers more power with the optional 245hp 2.0 litre EcoBoost engine and a lower sticker price.

The old Bronco didn’t have tech like this — Pre-collision assist, blind-spot information system, lane keeping, and rear view cameras. It adds some safety to the fun.

The F-150 has been North America’s favourite “car” for decades and although at first glance, the 2021 Ford F-150 appears not much different on the exterior it has 97% all-new or fully-redesigned components.

This year’s engine selection includes the model’s first hybrid that pairs a 3.5L V6, a 47-hp electric motor, and a 1.5kWh battery pack - giving you an estimated 1120km range.

Features abound — from power deployable running boards to a fold-down shifter that creates a flat surface for your centre console for grabbing lunch to working on your computer.

It’s proving itself already with “Best-in-Class” towing, payload, torque and horsepower.

The seats recline fully flat for a snooze. In your headrest, you’ll find built-in Bang-Olufsen speakers, which are part of the optional up to 19-speakers inside the cab.

For the job site, you’ll find helpful rulers in the work-surface tailgate, hidden area for c-clamps and cubbies for power outlets for 120V. The hybrid version even has a 240V included. You’ve got power, with the Class-exclusive* Pro Power Onboard giving you the ability to use your truck like a mobile generator. With the new, class-exclusive* available 3.5L PowerBoost™ Full Hybrid V6 engine, you can wield up to a massive 7.2kW of available output.

The original Mustang Mach 1 was released as a part of the

model’s first generation in 1969, and the 2021 Mustang Mach-E begins a new page in the history of the iconic ride after its 17-yearlong absence.

Where a typical Mustang engine would be, you have almost 4 cu ft of “frunk” (trunk) with a handy compartmentalized area, which also includes the charger cord.

There’s also nearly 40 cu ft in the rear.

And surprise! It’s got the advantage of optional AWD with dual motors and interiors packed with lots of modern technology.

Finally, it’s got horsepower never seen before in the old V8 engine now replaced with an EV drivetrain.

On the exterior, hidden door handles improve the aerodynamics, and a sleek profile that offers a lot of headroom space, not just in the front but also in the rear.

Competing with Tesla’s model Y this electric pony car is gaining a lot of attention and early consumer reports are extremely favourable.

What is moving buyers from the Tesla to the Ford is the interior and comfort rideability. There’s nothing like it on any other Ford and nothing like it in the Tesla.

It offers a wide range of battery choices and even a highperformance #MachEGT that will deliver 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and up to 490 kms of range.
