Nelson city councillor Brittny Anderson has announced that she will seek the nomination as the NDP candidate in the Oct. 24 provincial election.

Current Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall said on Sept. 16 that she does not intend to run again (see above). Anderson told the Star Mungall approached her, asking her to run.

“I have loved representing my community both at the city table and at the regional district table,” Anderson said. “And so when I started thinking about [seeking the nomination], I thought

about my community.”

She said she thought about families and businesses and how they are surviving the pandemic but still need more support.

“We’ve really been able to keep people safe and keep businesses open. And that’s something that I want to see continue. I think we have a tremendous opportunity here to keep our community safe and thriving, while we face one of our biggest challenges.”

The other big challenge, she says, is climate change.

“We need to work at it as cities and as a province to

make sure we are resilient.”

Anderson said she wants to support government environmental and energy initiatives like Clean BC. “It’s seen the largest investments of anywhere else in Canada in terms of investing in sustainability,” she said.

She also wants to see more people housed, and lauded the work of Nelson CARES. Anderson grew up in Nelson, graduated from L.V. Rogers Secondary, and has lived in Creston.

She said that even though she thought she knew a lot about Nelson when she ran

for council, “every single day on council has been a huge learning experience for me.”

She listed examples such as hydro generation, the paving budget, sewer systems, sidewalks, “how much our arts community contributes to the economy, and how our businesses have lifted themselves up [in the pandemic].”

As of the Star’s print deadline on Tuesday morning, Anderson was the only person seeking the nomination, and no date has yet been set for a nomination meeting.

Nelson considering new Hall Street pier

Nelson City Council is contemplating a major upgrade of the Hall Street pier on Kootenay Lake.

The proposed project would be largely grant-funded and is part of the city’s attempt to create shovel-ready capital projects to stimulate the economy during the pandemic, along with two other proposed projects: a new library and changes to the Civic Theatre building.

The project would see the replacement of the pilings and decking, which are reportedly at the end of their life, as well as replacement of the gazebo beside the Prestige Lakeside Resort. It also includes the creation of a public event space on the pier, some of it covered, designed by a group of consultants headed by the Nelson-based Stanley Office of Architecture.

Mayor John Dooley said the pier has needed repairs for many years.

“There is nothing new about fixing the pier,” he said at council’s Sept. 8 meeting. “How we fix it and what it looks like, that’s new.”

The city has received a $500,000 grant from the Columbia Basin Trust for this project, and at the meeting it voted to spend a further $110,000 toward the removal and replacement of the current pilings.

Woman who assaulted downtown Nelson business owner sentenced

The owner of a downtown Nelson business suffered severe physical and emotional trauma after she tried to stop a shoplifter in 2017.

Linda Randall, who owns The Tickle Trunk at 645 Baker St., told a Nelson courtroom Friday she has lived with chronic pain and mental health issues since an altercation with Nicole Brown on Aug. 8, 2017.

Brown expressed remorse in her statement to the court.

Randall said after the assault she missed seven-to-eight months of work, was forced to stop dancing recreationally and put an end to her other job as a home builder. When the assault occurred she had been in the middle of a renovation on a home she intended to move into in the winter of 2017.

The house, she told the court, remains empty and unfinished.

Randall meanwhile has owned The Tickle Trunk for 15 years, but since the assault she no longer feels at peace downtown.

“I still look over my shoulder in public and startle easily at noise…,” she said.

“Until there is responsibility for the damages I have incurred I will continue to feel threatened.”

City loans Cottonwood Lake Preservation Society $35,000

Nelson City Council decided at its Sept. 8 meeting to lend the Cottonwood Lake Preservation Society $35,000, with the terms still to be negotiated.

This followed an urgent request for a grant, not a loan, brought to council in a motion at the same meeting by Councillor Rik Logtenberg.

He said the society’s fundraising goals and its attempts to thwart logging at Cottonwood Lake would fail without this last-minute intervention by council.

The switch from a grant to a loan was suggested and passed as a compromise in the last five minutes of the lengthy and tense discussion, which was mostly about a grant.

Mayor John Dooley, supported by Councillors Keith Page, Cal Renwick, and Janice Morrison, wondered why the society did not come to council with a formal grant request that included budget, timelines, fundraising plans, and more notice, rather than a councillor requesting it without any of those.

“I have seen no budget and no timelines,” Dooley said during the most heated part of the meeting. “[The city] cut

back on pay increases, froze our hiring, cut back to the bone, a zero per cent tax increase, and people think they can waltz through this door and ask for $35,000 just for the hell of it.”

After the Regional District of Central Kootenay purchased 21.6 hectares around Cottonwood Lake in the spring of 2019, the society decided to buy a further 49 hectares of the forest on a slope above Cottonwood Lake owned privately

by Nelson Land Corporation, which intends to log it.

The group has an agreement with the company that the sale can go ahead if it raises $400,000 by Dec. 31.

But then the society will still have to raise another $350,000 for legal fees plus the costs of fundraising, administration, surveying, subdividing, and a stewardship fee for the nature organization that will eventually take ownership of the land.

In the $400,000 deal with the Nelson Land Corporation there are interim deadlines, one of which was Aug. 31, extended to Sept. 15, when they were expected to have raised $180,000. At the time of the council meeting the society had not reached this, hence the last minute plea for $35,000.

But since the meeting, according to the society’s Andrew McBurney, the group has reached the $180,000 goal (not including a contribution from the city).

Whether this will mean the city still lends the money is unclear.

During the debate, Logtenberg repeatedly said issues of the society’s fundraising competence or tactics were irrelevant in the face of a more important issue: if the society did not receive the grant, their fundraising effort would fail, the slope above Cottonwood Lake will be logged, and this is likely to pose a flood threat to Nelson, especially in the context of climate change.

“There is the issue of downstream consequences,” he said, “especially over 30 or 60 or 80-year time horizons. The $35,000 will be nothing compared to a flood.”

He said a number of local experts at a public meeting last year attended by 400 people had warned that logging the Cottonwood slope could create a flood risk.

But Dooley and city manager Kevin Cormack said they had never received any data about flood risk from the society.

risk studies for the region, Cormack pointed out, which could have been provided to council if staff had known in advance that Logtenberg intended to make a flood control argument.

Logtenberg persistently pushed back against Dooley’s multiple objections, saying the financial risk to Nelson was zero because the grant would be returned to the city if the sale did not go through and if it does go through, the city will benefit from flood control and from the increasing popularity of the lake as a recreation destination for Nelson citizens.

“All it comes down to is whether Cottonwood Lake is worth saving, yes or no, it is as simple as that,” said Logtenberg.

He said saving Cottonwood Lake is the city’s responsibility, and “we should not be offloading [that] onto volunteers.”

Dooley countered that he would like to hear that from the preservation society, not from Logtenberg.

“You are way outside your parameters here as a city councillor,” Dooley told him.

“You are clearly lobbying for this group.”

Logtenberg said he was involved with the society in its

startup days but withdrew in the early stages and was not involved now.

Page agreed with Dooley on Logtenberg’s role in the discussion.

“You say you are not associated with it,” Page said, “but we do not have them here speaking. We have you speaking.”

Morrison said the city has already contributed to the Cottonwood Lake Preservation Society because Nelson has a large share of the cost of the 2019 RDCK purchase of a separate parcel of land around the lake (because Nelson is part of the RDCK).

“We have already made a significant contribution to ensuring trees stay standing,” she said.

Morrison also said, referring to 60-to-80-year flood possibilities, that a logged forest could regrow before a flood occurs.

Dooley added that “if somebody doesn’t cut some wood on the side of that mountain, it’s going to burn.”

After nearly an hour of a debate mostly between Dooley and Logtenberg, with arguments being repeated but with less and less patience, Page said, “Could we try and get the meeting back to decorum, please?”

Councillor Jesse Woodward, who had been silent for most of the debate, said, “It’s 10 p.m.

What’s happening here is not good situation for making a decision. We are at each other here. This is a lot of money, and we have said no to other people. What we are doing here is not good. You can see the divisiveness that is happening here.”

Page suggested lending the money rather than granting it.

“By passing this as a loan,” Councillor Brittny Anderson said, “we at least have the possibility of having all our questions answered. If we don’t, we will not have those questions answered and we might find out later we wish we had.”

But a motion for a grant was already on the table. It failed because a majority, Dooley, Page, Renwick and Morrison, voted against it.

On the motion for a loan, a majority of Logtenberg, Page, Anderson and Woodward voted for it, with Dooley, Renwick and Morrison against.

The terms of the loan are still to be worked out.

Health ministry to hire 33 new practitioners for Kootenay Boundary

Missing Lardeau man not found, underwater search called off Staff writer

Kaslo RCMP requested the public’s assistance last week in locating missing Lardeau resident Thomas Schreiber who failed to return following a planned canoe trip on Duncan Lake.

On Sunday they called off the underwater search.

“Members of the Underwater Recovery Team, along with Kaslo RCMP boat crew searched Duncan Lake with negative results,” the RCMP said in a news release. “Despite extensive efforts, the search has now been suspended.”

Schreiber was last seen by family on Sept.

15 around lunchtime and Kaslo RCMP was notified the morning of Sept. 16, after he failed to return as planned.

An investigation into Schreiber’s disappearance was immediately launched and led to the discovery of his white GMC Sierra pickup truck parked at the Howser boat launch, with no canoe.

RCMP called for the assistance of Kaslo Search and Rescue who initiated a search both on the water and from the air. They located an unoccupied canoe, believed to belong to Schreiber, in the water on the northeast side of the lake.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Schreiber or his disappearance is urged to contact their local police, the Kaslo RCMP at 250-353-2225, or remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

A $5.3-million program to bring 33 full-time health-care providers to the Kootenay Boundary over the next three years was announced Sept. 15 by the Ministry of Health.

The program will set up a network to serve approximately 15,250 people who don’t have a primary care provider in the Nelson, Trail, Castlegar, Nakusp, Kaslo, Grand Forks and Salmo areas.

Dr. Shelina Musaji, a physician lead with the Kootenay Boundary Division of Family Practice, said Thursday the program was first pitched to the health ministry in 2018. The network, she said, will help patients find appropriate services.

“Primary care providers such as family doctors and nurse practitioners are able to attach with patients and then allow those patients to have access to a family practitioner,” said Musaji.

Three family physicians, five nurse practitioners, six registered nurses, nine social workers, seven allied health professionals, one clinical pharmacist and two Indigenous health co-ordinators will be hired.

The improved services in the program include better access to maternity care, chronic disease and pain management services, mental health and substance-use resources, care for families, seniors and people with complex health issues, and those living in poverty.

The network will also hire Indigenous health co-ordinators after consultation with the Kootenay Boundary Aboriginal Services Collaborative, which includes the Ktunaxa Nation, the Okanagan Nation Alliance, Métis Nation, and the Circle of Indigenous Nations Society.

Culturally safe care for Indigenous peoples is among the goals for the new program.

“I wish to offer congratulations to the provincial government, the health districts and to the social investment sector for accomplishing this outstanding partnership,” said Sophie Pierre, Elder and former Chief of the Ktunaxa Nation, in a statement.

“When First Nations and Métis benefit from such collaboration, all people of the Province benefit.”

The trial must go on: Nelson’s Capitol Theatre to host Supreme Court case

A real courtroom drama is about to play out at Nelson’s Capitol Theatre.

The 93-year-old theatre will be the stage for the trial of Castlegar RCMP Const. Jason Tait, who is charged with manslaughter in the 2015 death of Waylon Jesse Edey.

The trial is scheduled to start Sept.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Attorney General told the Star physical distancing measures related to the COVID-19 pandemic led to a search for a larger venue than the Supreme Court room at the Nelson Courthouse for Tait’s trial, which will include a jury and is expected to take six weeks.

“The ministry canvassed a number of venues in Nelson that could accommodate a jury trial, taking into account the physical distancing guidelines required under COVID,” said the spokesperson.

Criminal trials resumed Sept. 8 at B.C. Supreme Courts after being shut down March 19. Plexiglas barriers, limits of the number of

people in a courtroom and screenings at courthouse entrances are among the changes that have been introduced at courthouses around the province. When necessary, the ministry said, jury trials would be held in off-site locations.

The trial will be one of the few events to be hosted at the 400-seat Capitol Theatre in 2020. Scheduled shows, such as a performance by legendary Canadian children’s star Fred Penner or a local production of Little Shop of Horrors, were either cancelled or postponed following the provincial lockdown in March.

But the theatre has continued operating. Its annual summer youth program moved outdoors and changed from an on-stage play to a film production, it assisted with local Canada Day celebrations by pre-recording speakers and performers for an online video, and in August renovations began on the theatre’s washrooms.

ROBERT MALCOLMSON “Too much liberty is, for the Sicilians, what would be a pistol or a stiletto in the hands of a boy or a madman.”

These words were written over 200 years ago by economist Paolo Balsamo about his fellow Sicilians. Do they have any relevance for the world of today?

“Liberty” is a cherished idea for most of us. We do not want to be coerced. Usually we do not want to told what to do. We value our freedom, whatever freedom might mean to each of us as individuals. “Live Free or Die”: this is the slogan on the license plates of the state of New Hampshire. Lots of Americans would agree with this either/or proposition (probably fewer Canadians).

One feature of this sort of thinking is that it tends to eliminate shades of grey. Much of life – and many of us know this daily – is a matter of compromise, getting by, accommodation, sometimes tolerating lesser evils. White/ black ways of thinking are, as a rule, not only simplistic, they also hinder us from understanding and coming to terms with the real world.

“Freedom” is one of those white words that causes trouble. For it needs to be linked to “from” or “to” or “of.” There are positive freedoms, but there are also constraints on freedom, many of which are expressed through laws, criminal and otherwise. The possession of guns is one of those freedoms that is tightly restricted in some jurisdictions, barely restricted at all in others (notably some U.S. states).

Society has claims, not just individuals. We think of Britain in the Second World War as fighting for freedom.

But it’s worth recalling that in May 1940 Parliament passed a law (in one day) that gave the government virtually dictatorial powers. When survival is at stake, abstract virtues are rarely useful.

The disastrous American response to COVID-19 is surely attributable, in part, to many people’s uncritical reverence for individual freedom – as against responsibility. “Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice,” declared Barry Goldwater, Republican candidate for President in 1964. But this is wrong. It is a vice. And it’s a vice that can be costly, as this year’s experiences in the U.S. have shown and continue to show.

Probably the best political balance has been achieved in Scandinavia. (Sweden’s handling of COVID-19 is admittedly contentious.) There the idea of social welfare is strong, while individual freedoms are protected: Norway is rated as the world’s freest country for journalists.

Capitalism seems to work best when embedded in social democracy, where a certain tension between private and public interests is accepted and where these interests are always under close scrutiny and subject to negotiation.

Something’s fishy The Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society (FoKLSS) project to assist restoration of West Arm shore spawning kokanee is laudable but unfortunately ill-conceived.

I conducted the original research on this population decades ago as well as recently. These shore spawners are only found where there is upwelling ground water at stream mouths at Six Mile, Harrop and Sitkum creeks. Monitoring seepage and water temperature is proposed, but these measures should occur before any gravel placement. Simply dumping gravel at a lower elevation level is hardly good science.

Research on Alouette Reservoir deep water spawning should be read by FoKLSS before advancing their project.

The FoKLSS incorrectly assumes that spawning habitat is currently limiting kokanee shore spawners and that more gravel equates to more kokanee. This idealistic notion fails to acknowledge the real reason why West Arm kokanee abundance is so limited. The inconvenient truth is that lake level regulation limits kokanee food, hence abundance not spawning habitat.

Producing more kokanee via restoration of shore spawning habitat will not produce more kokanee. Why? Kokanee fry produced by two spawning channels are limited by rearing habitat associated with the shoreline. When fry enter the lake in springtime they stay onshore relying on shoreline food. Of course the springtime shoreline today looks like a desert due to the lengthy, legal drawdown.

Annual production of one-to-two million fry from the spawning channels only results in 10-20,000 spawners. This means

less than two per cent survival from fry to adult compared to four-to-five per cent prior to operation of the Libby Dam. The power companies are more than happy to fund shore spawning restoration efforts because this avoids the real solution of stabilizing the lake level at something less than status quo that currently maximizes power production.

My intention is not to simply criticize FoKLLS but rather inform that a) there is science that should be read and not ignored and b) problems and solutions for West Arm kokanee are far more complex than conveyed in your Sept. 10 article.

Fertile ground for tolerance has also attracted a prodigious number of alternative health offerings. Dozens of online and shopfront businesses offer everything from naturopathy to ear-candling.

Most offer nutritional advice, suggest physical exercise and lifestyle changes.

Some may even include meditation and mindfulness in their offerings. Most, however, are unable to cross the basic scientific threshold of efficacy in other portions of their practices. When their claims of equivalency to scientific medicine and healing are made, these ‘alternatives’ become potentially dangerous.

Naturopathy for example rejects germ theory. It insists that infectious germ activity during illnesses are the result of, not

a cause of disease. It supposes that a ‘vital force’ exists and can be supported, manipulated and harmonized to affect the body healing itself.

Homeopathy postulates that diseases represent a disturbance in the body’s ability to heal itself and that only a small stimulus is needed to begin the healing process. Core to homeopathy is dilution. Made from one part of a substance it is diluted with either nine or ninety-nine parts of distilled water.

It is theorized that the smaller the dose, the more powerful the effect.

Traditional Chinese medicine includes various forms of of herbal medicine, cupping therapy, acupuncture, massage, bone-setting, exercise and dietary therapy.

Described as “fraught with pseudoscience,” the majority of its treatments have no logical mechanism of action.

In Reiki, the practitioner is seeking to transmit ‘Universal Life Energy’ to the client. It is a form of energy healing in which hands are placed just off the body or lightly touching the body or can be done long distance. The intention is to create deep relaxation, to help speed healing, reduce pain, and decrease other symptoms.

The liberal thinking and relaxed lifestyle in the Kootenays ought never overwhelm rational thinking insofar as our health is concerned. Integrated energy therapy, crystal healing, reflexology, ear-candling and those mentioned above all bear a great deal of skepticism when claims of ‘healing’ are offered. For all intents and purposes it appears that ‘Alternative Medicine’ is simply an ‘alternative to medicine.’

In an effort to curb the coronavirus, the top minds in the field have decided that in high school the students will stay with a learning group for a whole day. So that means if you are in Physics 11, you will be doing Physics 11 all day, everyday for five weeks straight. Can you imagine!? Learning new concepts all day long, without your brain getting a break? Yes, they will get breaks, but teacher feel the pressure too, as there is curriculum they must cover.

Teachers are not happy about this.

My daughter’s friend said her friend is just not going to go. Then she said she’s just going to walk out. She said a lot of kids should just walk out. I said I would support her if she organized a walk out.

What else can they do?

Jenny Herring Nelson Perspective from an “out of towner” To put it lightly, it is absolutely a challenge to find housing and it’s understandable why it is being considered a crisis. I recognize that this might not even accurately represent the reality of a lot of people; for some, it may be an impossible hurdle forcing wonderful people to leave Nelson. This is definitely sad and not a situation I (or likely anyone else) want to see happening.

However, I find myself somewhat disturbed to see a multitude of commentary that essentially states people not from Nelson are taking all of the available housing and this is bad.

The notion that people who are “out of towners” are not equally entitled to housing is similar to (if not exactly the same as) the line that immigrants are taking all of the jobs.

Like I mentioned, I understand that the current housing situation is frustrating at best, yet I would like to suggest that we take a step back and re-examine what we are

saying and what it means. Solving issues often happens when dialogue is respectful and inclusive. It would be wonderful to see the West Kootenay community solve this issue, and I worry that Facebook posts filled with divisive language will only seed anger and put money in the pockets of Mr. Zuckerberg (a true “out of towner”).

Y. Ishikawa Nelson Kudos to Mungall I was not surprised to hear that Michelle Mungall was stepping down. Michelle is a hard working MLA, who has accomplished a lot of good things during her tenure, and will be missed by most of her constituents. She turned the NDP around in regard to the Jumbo Pass development. Without her steadfast opposition to the project, the NDP might very well have reverted to their original position, supporting the development. For that, I thank her.

I suspect that she also fought hard to stop the Site C Dam, but in that fight she could not prevail. I believe the straw that broke the camel’s back was the Horgan government’s decision to push the Wet’suwet’en out of the way, forcing the construction of the natural gas pipeline through their traditional territory, which will facilitate the liquefaction and marketing of our dirty, fracked, natural gas. Michelle is a principled environmentalist. I wish her and her family nothing but the best of luck in the future, and I look forward to more

Rod Retzlaff Glade ^ Not impressed by electric-ready ferry I cannot share local MLA Michelle Mungall’s enthusiasm about our new “electric-ready” ferry. The reality is that taxpayers are spending $63 million for a new diesel-powered ferry that might be eventually be converted to run on electric power. While electric ferries are already in operation right now in other countries, ours might become electric in 2030. This is a pathetic attempt at greenwashing a status-quo ferry design, not an “exciting milestone.”

An electric ferry now would eliminate the use of one million litres of diesel fuel and offset 570 tonnes of CO2 annually. As we sit here in the smoke of record-breaking wildfires, caused by extreme drought and heat from climate breakdown, I can’t understand what we are waiting for.

It does not have to be this way. Norway put the first fully battery-electric ferry into operation in VERY similar conditions to those we have on Kootenay Lake (including the “weak grid” in Balfour) in June 2015. The challenge of charging the ferry in an area with undersized electricity supply was solved by adding a storage battery at each terminal.

To add insult to injury, the battery system for this Norwegian ferry was designed by B.C.-based Corvus Energy! In January 2019, Corvus Energy

(in Richmond, B.C.) was awarded a contract to supply the energy storage system for FIVE new all-electric ferries being built for another Norwegian ferry operator.

Norway is not the only country with fully electric ferries. Last year, the world’s largest battery-electric ferry went into service in Denmark. Even Ontario has two electric ferries that are nearing construction completion!

Why are we such laggards in British Columbia? It seems to be a question of political will. While the B.C. NDP and B.C. Liberals are attempting to build a fragile future on fracked gas extraction, liquefaction and export, both the Norwegian and Danish electric ferries were the direct result of government initiatives to harness the ingenuity of the private sector to tackle the problem of reducing CO2 emissions from their countries’ ferry fleets.

The B.C. government trumpeting a diesel “electric-ready” ferry for 2023 is like a taxi operator proudly announcing that a Toyota Prius will join the fleet in 2023, with a possible plug-in version to follow in 2030.

dismay and embarrassment, I had no tent poles. I contacted Valhalla Pure in New Denver after hours and asked Sandy at the campground office for help finding a solution. Dave Harley from Valhalla called to offer his personal tent for my use while in the area.

When I returned from picking it up, Sandy F. also brought her personal tent for my use. Both asked for nothing in return. Sandy offered the Food Bank as a recipient, which I will contribute to with thanks.

While at Gwillim Lakes I met Laura from LiveIT Productions in Nelson and Meredith who shared their experience and good humour including taking time to offer photos of me – which I never can get on my own. I had to return early from the Kootenay Glacier and Chuck Cram of Rossland offered to take me to Kaslo to meet my ride home. Again, would not accept payment for his kindness. Just pay it forward, he said like the others.

At the Kaslo hotel, the front desk guy was so flexible when it appeared my ride might not be coming as planned. A woman from Nelson offered me a ride if needed as she overheard our conversation. At each backcountry campsite, I met local people who were so friendly and laid back, it was a privilege to meet them, not to mention the Kootenay Glacier resident manager. Thank you all.

I was blown away by the scenery and beauty but overwhelmed by the gracious kindness of your people. I shall return.

Housing situation in RDCK very difficult, says report

A survey of the housing situation in the Regional District of Central Kootenay has found that an aging population, under- or unemployment, and few rental options are making housing difficult for many people living in the Slocan Valley, Arrow Lakes, and North Kootenay Lake areas.

The draft of the RDCK’s Regional Housing Needs Report has been delivered to the local government’s board of directors. It assesses the current state of home ownership, rental and non-market supported housing across the RDCK. The report found that one in five RDCK households are living in homes costing them nearly a third of their income. The situation is particularly acute in the region’s smaller centres, it says.

“Single people and low-income households cannot reasonably afford market prices” in Kaslo, Slocan Valley, Nakusp, and other areas, the report’s authors found.

“Single households, who are often younger and hold lower-wage jobs or are older and live off investments or savings, do not earn enough to comfortably rent or purchase a traditional dwelling … emphasizing the importance of non-market support.”

But it’s a pan-district problem.

“In 2016, Statistics Canada reported that 4,630 RDCK households lived in homes that put them outside their financial means … equating to 20 per cent of surveyed households,” the report says. “Renters, who as a whole earn less than owners, are much likelier to allocate unreasonable amounts to shelter (42 per cent).”

While couples (with or without children) and moderate-income households earn enough to comfortably purchase a single-detached dwelling, many residents of the area don’t.

“For instance, the median lone parent cannot reasonably afford any dwelling type…,” the report says. “Singles or very low-income households cannot reasonably afford any median dwelling price in RDCK, but can, or are close to, affording manufactured/ movable homes.”

The report’s authors used Census Canada information, public surveys, and interviews with stakeholders in the system to draw their conclusions.

The goal of the study is to identify housing gaps, opportunities and partnerships to support local and regional housing projects, and make recommendations as to strategies and best management to support housing.

“Oxygen will be offering seven online courses and three small in-person courses this fall,” says education co-ordinator Natasha Smith.

“Many of our instructors have specifically created classes that can be taught online, utilizing the many tools that we now have available to make this learning experience rewarding, interactive and convenient for our students.

Another benefit of online programming is that we are removing the barrier of travel for students that live outside of Nelson.”

The three in-person classes include Resurrecting the Lost Art of Letter Writing with Rayya Liebich, Eco-Printing on Textiles with Seathra Bell, and Painting on Another Level with Natasha Smith. The class sizes will be limited to a maximum of five students and

all COVID-19 safety protocols at the centre will be in place.

Oxygen is also offering two online professional development courses for creatives this fall. Starting with Art Shack with artist Ian Johnston.

“It’s a visual arts professional development free-for-all!” says Johnston. “Over four evenings of group conversation we will harness the hive mind and the experience of the participants to explore a self-identified group of professional development issues such as proposals, statements, audience, networks and researching opportunities.”

This is an opportunity to share, develop your skills, and meet other artists in a supportive, collaborative space. The second professional development course is How to Submit to Commercial Galleries with artist Kristy Gordon, who will

unveil the practical steps you can take to develop a connection with a commercial gallery. The one-session course includes a lecture, discussions and individual feedback.

Deborah Thompson has designed an online drawing course: Drawing with the World in Mind. This course will run twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the month of October.

“The COVID-19 Global Pandemic has highlighted a long list of global problems; climate change, homelessness, opioid crisis, racism, classism and more. Leaning into a creative practice during these times is helpful in developing meaningful insights and in cultivating imaginative ways to give constructive shape to the future,” says Thompson.

Community creates outdoor classroom at Brent Kennedy

Brent Kennedy Elementary School has a new outdoor classroom thanks to a teacher with initiative and a local company with a community spirit.

Kindergarten teacher Therese Marken has faced 25 years worth of back to school preparations, but thanks to COVID-19 this year is anything but routine.

As she began to brainstorm about how to make this a great year for her students in spite of the complications surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, Marken came up with the idea of creating an outdoor classroom space.

Marken enlisted the help of her family to come up with a sketch and a proposal for the project.

“I was kind of afraid of asking for too much. I was just going to make some log rounds and plywood tables,”

said Marken.

“I thought it would be just sort of be like a kindergarten camp that we could go to.”

Brent Kennedy’s principal and School District 8 gave their stamp of approval to the project and Marken approached Kalesnikoff Lumber with her proposal.

“Once the project fell into Kalesnikoff’s hands — it was amazing,” said Marken.

Kalesnikoff donated all of the lumber needed for the project including two tables crafted at their new mass timber facility.

“I had no idea what they were planning,” said Marken.

“I was almost in tears when the two trucks arrived with two beautiful tables, all the log rounds and all the other wood that was needed.”

Start to finish the project was complete in three weeks and in time for the second day of

school. The outdoor classroom is now nestled on the edge of the woods that surrounds the school property.

“It felt like community caring for community,” said Marken about Kalensnikoff embracing the project.

“It is keeping the teachers safe, which is keeping the students safe, which is keeping the families safe. They were there for the community.”

Marken says not just her students, but the whole school has been enjoying the space.

“It’s a play space, it’s a learning space, it’s a social place,” she said.

Marken foresees using the space year round, even dressing her students up in their snowsuits for some outdoor learning. Lesson plans using snow, pebbles and pinecones for letters, counting and art projects are already dancing through her head.

RDCK rescinds evacuation alert for properties near Talbott Creek fire

The Regional District of Central Kootenay has completely rescinded an evacuation alert for properties around the more than 1,300 hectare Talbott Creek fire in the Slocan Valley.

While the evacuation alert was initially issued on Aug. 22 for 305 properties around the fire, the RDCK gradually reduced the amount of properties under the alert in the weeks to follow as the threat to structures was diminished.

“This has been a stressful month for residents and we appreciate their patience and understanding through this process,”said RDCK emergency program manager Chris Johnson.

Crews have also been busy seeking out hot spots on the fire’s southwest edge around McFayden Creek.

Hose lines and sprinklers installed in the Tedesco Road area around the fire’s north flank continue to be maintained by crews.

The Tedesco Forest Service Road remains closed to all traffic as of press time.

Environment Canada is predicting cooler and wetter conditions in the Castlegar area over the next few days, which the BC Wildfire Service says will help with the fire suppression efforts.

In June, Divine Alchemy Tattoos, Tarynn Lloyd’s pottery studio, Busaba Thai Cafe and Aldo’s Cleaners were forced to close due to the fire and extensive water damage. Valet Restorations tackled the clean up.

Architect Thomas Loh designed the new building. It’ll house two spacious ground floor venues for either retail or commercial tenants, and upstairs, three live/work studios. The rebuild is being done by Cornerstone General Contracting.

The tattoo and pottery studios are returning. Busaba has set up shop in the Savoy Building at the corner of Baker and Falls. Aldo’s future is undecided at this point. There’ll be a pair of new retail/business units and a live/work space available for rent in the new year. *** Economic stimulus is a pillar to recovery from the global pandemic.

“What appealed to us most about the business is its truly sustainable nature,” says Andrew. “There are so many children’s items in circulation, and because kids grow so quickly, items are often discarded before their time. Buy used is a way to fight the fast fashion cycle and all the problems that come along with that.”

Inventory includes products from local mom-makers, eco toys and gently used or new consignors products.

On a more concerning note: the Play It Again Kids location was one of literally dozens of Nelson locations recently spray-painted and vandalized in the middle of the night in the past few weeks.

A question: At what point does a city install security cameras at some of its high traffic locations to help curb crime and senseless property damage? We’ll leave that one open for discussion.

It took Damian John decades to realize words weren’t always the best way to connect with people.

When John was in his 20s he became woke to the problems of the world and hoped to make a change. In his 30s, having failed to make that change, he struggled with depression and anxiety.

But four years ago the now 43 year old quit his career as a massage therapist to focus on his art. That choice led to an epiphany.

John, a Ymir-based artist, hopes to meld words and art into a new type of conversation when he hosts a workshop for BC Culture Days on Sept.

25 to Oct. 25.

His livestream is titled Exploring Reconciliation Through Creativity, in which John plans to tell the story of how colonization affected his family and people before having participants create art based on the discussion.

A member of Tl’azt’en First Nation near Prince George, John grew up with a family traumatized by the residential school system. His father attended nearby Lejac Residential School, a Catholic-run facility that operated from 1922 to 1976.

The school is partly remembered now for being the place four boys froze to death while trying to escape from in 1937.

“All of my family on that side is directly impacted by colonization, by residential school,” said John, “and that impacts us as his children, that affects nephews and generations that are coming after us. There’s a heavy, heavy impact mentally, health wise, relationally, all of

these various components which would take a long time to talk to or speak to in a real strong way.”

First Nations art has always been a part of John’s life. His father brought pieces home, and John was later influenced by artists Robert Sebastian and Roy Henry Vickers.

John’s own art is vibrant, colourful and distinctly modern. In his work he’s found a place to explore his culture and voice concerns while also being in control of the outcome in a way he never felt he could in conversation.

“If I want to have a life that has any feelings of quality to it, I need to shift things,” he says. “So making things that I think are beautiful, and allowing people to engage in that space as well, felt useful.”

That’s how he hopes the people who take his workshop feel after creating their own work. John wants to inspire new ways of discourse about difficult topics despite personal differences, and he thinks art is the key.

“How do we bridge those spaces to come to a place of community and goodwill and conflict resolution?” he says. “In spite of being devastated by all the information out there I still have hope we can do things differently.”

A game of hide-and-seek that could last centuries has just begun along the Kaslo River Trail.

About 30 people showed up on Sept. 6 for the ‘start’ of the game, which features some very patient participants.

‘Hide and Seek’ is the latest installation of the ‘Discover the Koots’ series of sculptures, the creation of a trio of artists from Argenta – Yvonne Boyd, Christopher Petersen and Spring Shine.

“We figured the Kaslo River Trail is a really perfect place to have it,” says Boyd. “It’s just outside of town, it’s in a really beautiful setting, and it’s an easy walk for families, which is exactly what our goal is, to have them in places like that.”

‘Hide and Seek’ features a series of installations along the beautiful Kaslo River Trail, eight in all. Full figures, or just heads, and sometimes a mix of both can be found peeking out from rock faces, hidden behind boulders or stationed right along the trail.

The installation is both a work to be enjoyed and an invitation for anyone who’s ever played in the woods to join in the fun.

“We were walking along here, and just admiring the rocks,” she says.

“And it was, ‘wouldn’t it be cool if something was coming out of the rock here?’ and ‘Oh look, there’s another rock over there.’ And then, ‘Oh hey, this is a perfect place for hide-and-seek. Do you guys remember playing Capture the Flag?’

“And it evolved from there.”

The sculptures are designed to last for a very long time – Boyd notes cement bridges have a half-life of about 90 years.

“It’s cement, there’s steel inside, but it’s totally encased, it’s not going to rust for a very long time,” she says. “We design them to be people-friendly, and our hope is that they will grow mosses and lichen and grow even further into the surroundings.

“It’s really amazing,” she says of the notion that these sculptures will outlast their creators. “I just have a huge amount of gratitude for the place we live that allows us to do that.”

It’s the third in the ‘Discover the Koots’ series, with other installations in Castlegar and Meadow Creek. The project was sponsored

by the Kaslo Outdoor Recreation and Trails Society, and funded with help from the Columbia Basin Trust Public Art Grants and an online GoFundMe campaign.

Boyd says the trio isn’t done with their playful creations yet. They plan another installation in Slocan village, at the head of the Slocan Valley Rail Trail this fall. They hope eventually to create a series of sculpture installations in other communities across the West Kootenay.

The idea is to create a world-class sculpture circuit to be discovered by people hiking, biking, canoeing or kayaking in the region. The group will use promotion and geocaching of the ‘Koots,’ as they call the figures, to inspire public art touring for years to come.

From The Heart, a next chapter in Kootenay youth making a difference SUBMITTED BY ANDREA MANN

From the Heart: Fire & Flow is a new project in the West Kootenays seeking Indigenous, non-Indigenous youth of all racial and sexual identities ages 15 to 30 to join in collaborative learning for the next several months.

The youth will work with video, art, poetry, spoken word, hip hop and music through weekly collaborations with artists, Elders, and knowledge keepers. Their interests and process will define an end product, which may take the form of a film or website to be shared with the community in the spring.

In some ways, this is another turn of the circle of the From the Heart: One Day. One Circle project pursued by students at Mount Sentinel High School last school year. However, with a new group of youth, many new team members, and changed global circumstances, there is much to be discovered to deepen its initial focus on Truth and Reconciliation.

Both projects have been funded by VIDEA, a Victoria-based human rights and social justice organization. This year, local organizations supporting this work also include the Nelson Public Library and The Capitol Theatre.

From the Heart: Fire and Flow deepens the community-based connections since there are many new volunteers who witnessed the initial performance and were inspired to become more involved in social justice learning and action as a result. This speaks to the power of youth voices, and their critical call to action — we need to face the dark truths of colonial history, take a stand against the continued injustices experienced by Indigenous people, and pursue urgent climate action.

For all its strengths, From the Heart: One Day. One Circle did not explicitly name racism or white supremacy, an omission that became glaring in retrospect, as Black Lives Matter protests brought global awareness in subsequent months.

This revealed ever-present layers of privilege and denial, and as the producer and main writer for this production, I take responsibility for righting this wrong.

Through connections with the newly formed West Kootenay People for Racial Justice, From the Heart: Fire and Flow will be guided in setting a more balanced context within which to pursue Truth and Reconciliation.

As a result, the youth will have our full presence and support to face the challenging realities of current events.

While fires of climate change burn along the west coast, and the metaphorical fires of resistance burn against white supremacy and injustice, we will seek transformation together. From the Heart: Fire and Flow will build connection and resilience for hope, healing and solidarity across bridges of difference.

If that sounds familiar – then have I got good news for you! There’s something you can do to take a bit of the bad away from those tasks you deplore. It’s easy and takes hardly any time. Best of all, it won’t cost you a penny.

I’m speaking, of course, about audiobooks.

Ah, the joy of an audiobook. All the goodness of reading, with the added benefit of potential multitasking. As an added bonus, you don’t have to keep track of due dates – the audiobook will return itself once its borrowing period expires (or, as I like to say, it will self-destruct). If you’re already a fan of podcasts, you’ll find audiobooks to be just as easy to use.

If you’ve never borrowed a digital au-

driven not just by our adult patrons, but also by children. If you haven’t yet introduced your children to audiobooks, you just might want to give it a try. They can be a big hit during long car rides, or if they need some winding down before bedtime.

Our visually-impaired library patrons have been using our NNELS “Talking Books” for years – an audiobook lending program of sorts – and many have now found that our regular digital audiobook collection has significantly expanded their selection.

Whatever your stage of life, digital audiobooks might be that one thing you didn’t know you were missing until you gave it a try. It might be just what you need on your daily commute, while you’re going for a jog, or walking the dog.

Or if, like me, you want to be in two places at once: elbow deep in soap suds, standing at the kitchen sink, while simultaneously sinking into that new novel you’ve been waiting for. Your body in one place, your mind in another.

(Although I should point out that even though they are the fastest growing segment, they are far from being more popular than print books. In Canada, in 2019, only 5 per cent of book purchases were audiobooks, compared to 24 per cent hardcovers, 49 per cent paperbacks, and 17 per cent ebooks.)

Gary McQuaid, a former Nelson Leafs player and coach who helped lead the team through two of its finest regular seasons, has passed away at age 79.

Born in Ottawa, McQuaid played forward for the Senior Nelson Maple Leafs from 1966 to 1969, during which he won a Savage Cup in 1967.

McQuaid left to play one season as a player-coach in Holland, two seasons in Calgary and another with a semi-pro team in Des Moines, Iowa before returning to the Leafs from 1973 to 1977.

His coaching tenure began with the Castlegar Rebels junior team in 1985-86, after which he moved once again back to Nelson where he co-coached the team with Ted Hargreaves from 1987 to 1991.

McQuaid and Hargreaves lead the Leafs two division championships in the 1988-89 and 198990 seasons, during which they finished with an accumulative record of 76-7-2.

McQuaid later served as a Nelson Minor Hockey coach for teams at the peewee, bantam and midget rep levels. He also led the West Kootenay Wildcats to a provincial midget female championship during the 2006-07 season.

Thrums name origin delighted Scottish author Two hundred forty-eighth in a series on West Kootenay/ Boundary place names n earlier installGREG ment NESTEROFF in this series looked at how Uncommon Knowledge Thrums, BC got its name from a series of novels by J.M. Barrie set in the fictional village of Thrums, Scotland, based on Barrie’s birthplace of Kirriemuir.

The books, Auld Licht Idylls, A Window in Thrums, and The Little Minister, predated Barrie’s fame as author of Peter Pan. In a letter to the Nelson Daily News of Aug. 6, 1937, Robert Main wrote that a few miles from Kirriemuir was the town of Brechin, which “was the birthplace of one of Nelson’s most brilliant raconteurs, whose wit sparked as bright as the gems of a jeweller.”

Main was talking about himself, of course — he published his verse in a series of booklets called the Pop Inn Annual — but he actually lived at Bonnington, also named after a place in Scotland.

Main went on: “When first I settled in the Kootenays it was at Thrums.

When building my home I had an idea that I would like to have a copy of the original Window in Thrums in my cottage. I wrote to J.M. Barrie for details.

I doing so I told him about the origin of the name Thrums, BC …

“The CPR directors were naming the stations and the daughter of one of them was reading A Window in Thrums at that point. Asking her father if she could name the station, and he complying, she named in Thrums.” Unfortunately, neither father nor daughter’s name was recorded.

But Main received a reply from Barrie dated Feb. 8, 1909 which read: “Thank you heartily for your very pleasant letter. I was interested to hear of Thrums, BC and also to be told the quaint story of its origin.

“Alas for the original Window. There is not and never was one. I laid my scene in a house that exists (tho’ I have never been inside it) and I put in the window as I wanted it to command the ‘brae.’ But if you like to think you put in the window in reality, from memory it should be about twice the size of this double sheet of paper, only you see good things and pleasant from it.”

What became of the original letter and did Main receive an inscribed copy of the book he desired? It’s not known.

“May Peace Prevail on Earth” Members of the Nelson Interfaith Climate Action Collaborative and local residents gathered together on Monday, September 21, around the peace pole at St. Saviour’s Anglican Church for a prayer vigil. September 21 is the annual celebration of the United Nations International Day of Peace. The UN theme this year is “Shaping Peace Together.” We gathered for prayer, quiet meditation and chanting, and reflection on ways that we can actively engage in peacemaking in our community and the world.

The Peace Pole Project began in 1975

in Japan by Masahisa Goi, author of the universal message and prayer, “May Peace Prevail On Earth,” and the founder of The World Peace Prayer Society. Since then, hundreds of thousands of peace poles have been dedicated in 180 countries around the world. These monuments serve as visible and tangible reminders to visualize and pray for world peace.

Our peace pole has been inscribed in eight languages: Sinixt, and Ktunaxa, French, Russian, Italian, Chinese, Hebrew, and English, which were chosen to represent the heritage of our local

Volunteers needed at Our Daily Bread

Our Daily Bread is at risk due to a significant drop in volunteers.

COVID-19 is not going away, at least so it seems. Neither is Our Daily Bread (ODB). This is the commitment we are making to our community, and we are asking for help at this time.

ODB is Nelson’s hot lunch program for those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, and now also for those who are shut in, immobile, or self-isolating. Presently, folks can pick up a meal to go at the door of Our Daily Bread, from Monday to Friday,

and receive a Subway voucher for Saturday during this time of uncertainty.

We have expanded our program to bring meals to doors for those who can’t make it to our door. This has been a lifesaver (literally) for so very many as we have provided hundreds of meals during this time of pandemic lockdown.

Since Phase 3 has been enacted, schools have started up, people have gone back to work, and the news of increase of COVID cases contributed towards a substantial drop with our volunteer base. Volunteers are essential for ODB to operate. We cannot do it without them.

Creating a story or revising the one you have told can help you accept your reinvention transition to retirement or your next career. In a transition, your story is your road map. It needs to define both who you are and where you’re headed. If a story is meaningful, the past is related to the present and the present provides a window to the future. But some people don’t connect the dots between their past, present and future.

After losing her marketing job, a woman named Grace took some time off for self-analysis.

That paid off in an “aha” moment. Coaching, mentoring and teaching had always been a part of her career, and were the things she enjoyed the most. But they were minor skills, not the dominant part of her career. She asked herself, “Why don’t I figure out how to make that a more major part of her next career? Learning and adult education. She had been toying with that idea in her mind for many years, but now the pieces fit. The story fit, and she felt good about it and it all made sense.

Grace then asked herself what classes or certificates she should take to compensate for any knowledge gaps and which people she should talk with to pinpoint new opportunities.

Suddenly, what seemed to be a closed world, opened up.

Grace’s story evolved. She originally offered up a buffet of her skills and asked for feedback from people she networked with. Now Grace talks about how her social science background and her understanding of people, and her communications tell her own story.

When is my Gas furnace unsafe?

A

A gas furnace is unsafe if the heat exchanger is cracked, the heat exchanger is blocked, the burners are rusted and burning badly, or the limits switches are broken.

A cracked heat exchanger will pass the products of combustion to the “house air”. Since these products contain carbon monoxide (co), and the house air is recycled through the furnace as the house is heated, co levels will rise in the home. Symptoms are – headache, excessive humidity, a smell associated with not the co but with the burning aldehydes. If your windows are condensing and you feel better every time you leave your house get the furnace checked. FixNew furnace

I’d like to do some home improvements; what are my options?

Refinancing your mortgage may be your best solution!

Dreaming of that kitchen reno... New bathroom... New furnace, roof or garage???

If you’ve built up some equity in your home, refinancing your mortgage may be the best home improvement solution. Interest rates are attractive at the moment and by refinancing, you may be able to fund your home improvement and reduce your ownership costs at the same time!

If your mortgage hasn’t completed it’s term, your lender may still let you renegotiate a new mortgage; particularly if the term for the new mortgage is a longer one. Believe me... they want your business!

If the heat exchanger is blocked (usually from rusted burners producing soot) the flames will roll out from the front of the furnace on start. Symptoms are: baked and melting controls and wiring, blackened paint above the burner tray, soot in the draft hood, soot on the chimney termination. Fix- New furnace.

If your mortgage is already at an attractive, low rate, you may not need to renegotiate. In a situation like this, it may be in your best interest to take out either a home improvement loan or arrange a line of credit, secured against the value in your property.

The limit switches prevent the furnace from getting to hot. If the furnace filters were never changed the furnace would overheat and the limit switches turn off the gas. Look for paint discolouration, burning smell. Fix- New limit switch.

Typically, either option will provide funds at a far lower interest rate than unsecured loans or credit card purchases. Want to know more about solutions for your real estate needs?

Once I’ve satisfied all of my financing conditions to purchase a home and removed conditions am I 100% cleared until I take possession of my new home?

A

The short answer to this question is NO! There are instances where lenders have backed out of deals because the situation of the borrower has changed between the subject removal date and the closing date. Here are some examples of changes that could overturn your approval: 1. Employment – You have been approved and provided information verifying your current income to the lender as one of the conditions to approve your mortgage. If there is a change in your income between subject removals and the closing date the lender could pull their financing out from beneath you.

Many lenders call employers to verify income when the deal is submitted and a couple weeks before closing.

2. Debt – The lender worked out your debt servicing ratios to determine if you fit within their guidelines to be approved for a mortgage at the time of approval.

If you take on additional debt between the time of approval and closing and the lender catches wind of this, you may not meet their guidelines and again they could pull your financing.

3. Credit – Credit history is such a major aspect lenders use to qualify you for your mortgage and if your credit rating changes significantly between the time of approval and the closing date they could once again pull your mortgage approval.

Beatrice Verigin After a brief but courageously fought battle with cancer, Beatrice Verigin (nee Shkurato) passed away at Kootenay Lake Hospital on September 7, 2020 at the age of 76.

Born in Pincher Creek, Alberta to Nick and Mabel Shkurato, Beatrice lived the bulk of her life in Slocan Park with her ďŹ nal years spent in Castlegar BC. Beatrice will always be remembered for her community involvement in Slocan Park as part of the Hall Society, on Fall Fair Fundraisers, or the ladies groups as well as being an active member of the USCC, be it on peace walks, in the cooking groups, or choral singing with the Slocan Valley choir.

Predeceased by her parents, her brothers Nick and John, sisters Polly, Helen, Lillian, Doris, and her son Peter. Beatrice was also predeceased by her in-laws Bill and Florence Verigin.

Survived by her loving husband, Lewie of 58 years; son Brent (Teresa) Verigin, grandson Brenden; daughter Karen (Matt) Plotniko; and her furry grandkids, Levi and Charlie.

The family would like to thank Dr. Phillip Malpass, Dr. Brandon Tuvel, Dr. Chris Cochrane and all the sta at the Kootenay Lake Hospital for their care, compassion and kindness.

Her service was held at the Slocan Park Community Hall on Tuesday, September 15, 2020 under the direction of Peter P. Relko with interment at the Slocan Park Doukhobor Cemetery.

Laquita Bouillet (nee Schneider) July 19, 1930 – August 25, 2020 Laquita Joy Bouillet (nee Schneider) passed away at home in Victoria, BC on August 25, 2020 at the age of 90.

Laquita was born on July 19, 1930 in Provost, AB to Bennie and Zetta Schneider. The family moved to Nelson, BC in 1947 where Laquita worked for her dad in Bennie’s Grocery, and later became a hairdresser.

Maurice and Laquita were married in Nelson on September 7, 1953. Over the next twenty ďŹ ve years they made their home in the Kootenays, Nelson, Cranbrook and New Denver, where they raised their ďŹ ve children and enjoyed ďŹ shing and camping throughout those years.

In 1981 they moved to Vancouver Island and spent many happy years in Nanaimo. When they retired in 1994 they enjoyed exploring the Island together in their RV. In 2017 they moved to Victoria to be closer to family and Laquita and Maurice enjoyed being a part of the Dawson Heights community, participating in many social activities.

Laquita enjoyed ceramics, pottery, sewing, painting and gardening. She took pride in showing her beautiful garden to her visitors. Laquita and Maurice were happiest when they could spend time with their family.

Laquita will be lovingly remembered by Maurice, her husband of 67 years, children Lavona, Alida (Stew), Alvie (Rhonda), Iva (Rod), Wanda (James), 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Laquita was predeceased by her parents, Bennie and Zetta, brother Arvid, sister Gaylia and sons-in-law Mike and Lee. Donna Mae Ross (Dewar) December 1, 1940 - September 13, 2020 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loved one Donna Ross.

Born in Edmonton, AB to Jim and Shirley Dewar and at the age of 12 Donna moved to Nelson with her family. She attended Nelson Jr. High and LV Rogers High School.

Donna married Lionel Ross in 1959 and they moved to Invermere, BC (Lionel with the Forest Service). They were blessed with two sons, Brant and Dale who where born in Invermere. Later was a move to Calgary where Donna was employed by North West Trust Co. for 6 years.. Not being a big city girl a move was made back to Nelson where she was employed with City of Nelson for a total of 17 years, a move to AB for 2 years and back to the City of Nelson for another 14 years, 31 years altogether with the City of Nelson. Donna was a very dedicated and hard working employee and did enjoy her job.

After her retirement in 2003 Donna started volunteering at Mt. St. Frances, and Mountain Lakes Community Centre for a total of 16 years, she also volunteered for Streetcar #23, BC Mammography Screening for a short time and Civic Theatre Co-op when it ďŹ rst opened. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #51 for 46 years. It was at the Legion that she enjoyed a weekly game of darts with some special gals. Donna also did some travelling before and after her retirement to Australia, Scotland, England, Mexico, Las Vegas, Nashville and cruised the Western Mediterranean and Alaska. The Nelson Waterfront Pathway was Donna’s favourite walk with her special pal Benji and even after his passing in 2014 she still enjoyed the walk almost every day.

Donna also enjoyed dog sitting a couple of her Canine pals.

Donna was predeceased by her son Dale, parents Jim & Shirley Dewar, sister Lynda, brother Ken, sister in law Brenda, nieces Kelsy & Tracy and of course Benji. Donna is survived by her son Brant (Karen), brother Gordon (Pam), brother in law Alan, nephew Garth Dewar, niece Mackenzie Pratt and many cousins and friends.

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

We would like to say a special thank you to Dr. Newson, Dr. Malpass, Dr. Sarah Taylor, all the special nurses in the Oncology Unit at KLGH and to all mom’s caring and compassionate friends who oered so much support to mom through rides to appointments, food, owers, visits and phone calls.

Cremation has taken place and keeping with the wishes of Donna, there will be no services.

Born March 17, 1931 Died Sept 22, 2019 It was one year ago that we lost our beloved Aunt Donna.

Donna was the fourth, and youngest child of Isabel Henderson and Guy Wright. She was born and lived in Edmonton for most of her life.

Donna worked for Imperial Esso in Edmonton (“Put a tiger in your tank�), as an accounting assistant, but most weekends were spent with her horses at her ranch in Devon, Alberta. She retired from Imperial Esso at a young age to pursue her passion for horses and building. After retirement, Donna built a huge ranch house, barn, and corrals on her Devon property, and enjoyed years of raising horses. She turned that passion into driving horse drawn carriages for dignitaries in Edmonton as well as horse drawn sleighs in the winter. She decided to move to Nelson in 1991, and transitioned nicely into Kootenay life making many lasting friendships and building a beautiful lakefront home.

Donna lived an extremely varied and full life.

She enjoyed snowmobiling, fishing, boating, travelling, woodworking/carving, stained glass, needlepoint and lunching with her friends. She was a kind and generous soul, and her property became the home to the Nelson Dragon boaters for many years. She so enjoyed the social aspect of the many paddlers. Rotarians: Staying together, six feet apart…

Remember the nightly 7 o’clock moments when the pots banged, the bells rang, and the noisemakers brought the neighbourhoods out to salute the front-line folks? Well, we don’t hear much of that anymore, but I know we still feel it. People are wearing masks, businesses have solid health protocols when they are open, and the schools are trying to meet the challenges of kids getting their heads together; some folks are holding their families at home and making other educational arrangements. I think

our community is doing a thoughtful job of pushing back pandemic pandemonium.

For a proud Rotary moment, I’d like to salute the front-liners of the Nelson Rotary Club: Dr. Marisa Van der Vyver, nurse Colleen Driscoll, ambulance first responder Corey Viala, physiotherapist Janice Morrison, hydro line worker Roger Fontaine, Public health nursing student Olga Hallborg, and Dietician Heather Love. And then there’s a shout out due to the club members and their partners who are

restaurant/bar owners, realtors, accountants, counsellors, civic workers, veterinarians, investors, lawyers, arts administrators and insurers who continue to work virtually and personally to make the Nelson economy go round. The retired Rotary folks have a part to play too, as they support one another in safe activities and volunteer work.

The Nelson Daybreak Club leadership this challenging year is invested in Allison Alder.

She is a dean at Selkirk College, committed to delivering programs

in this strange year. In additiontotheformidable mask-making team, and colleagues in education and business from the Daybreak Rotary Club, there’s a particular frontliner, Jim Reimer, who is the familiar pastor at Our Daily Bread. Jim says: “My tag line at the bottom of my email signature is, “staying together-six feet apart.” This capsulizes my approach to the pressure and huge burden we are experiencing during this season of a pandemic.

Respect, kindness, and purposeful connections help us to get through the most difficult of

situations.

Personally, my faith in God, being intentional in having focused relationships, and having continued avenues of service have kept me from depression, discouragement, and despair. Staying together, six feet apart will get us through.”

Communicable disease is not a new challenge for Rotarians around the world as they have taken on the scourge of polio since 1988, and the wins have been big.

In the world forum, staying together, continents apart, is the way to get us through.

Allison Alder, President Rotary Club of Nelson Daybreak 2020-2021 It was 1980 and Allison Alder’s mother couldn’t believe what she heard: Women not allowed! What frustration for a woman who was obviously a Rotarian at heart.

Her mother has now been able to share the Rotary journey that she encouraged Allison to take, and what a journey it has been. Allison spent a year in Brazil as a Rotary Youth Exchange student and credits that experience for being a huge influence in her personal development.

Naturally curious, Allison tremendously enjoys meeting people and hearing about what makes them tick. Her curiosity was put to the test during a year in Brazil where the language, customs, and lifestyle were completely different from Canada. Allison learned to take risks, try different things when opportunity arose, and engage with diverse and interesting

local people. She thrived and built friendships with host families that have lasted a life time. Family is all important, and Allison’s greatest joy is time spent hanging out with family: her husband, children, stepchildren, and grand children.

Allison has continued to take advantage of opportunities throughout life. She began teaching for Selkirk College in Nakusp in 1991 while operating an environmental consulting firm, and she has progressed since then to become Selkirk’s Dean for the School of Academic Upgrading & Development, the School of University Arts & Sciences, the Mir Centre for Peace. She applauds the staff at Selkirk College who are living up to the motto of “building remarkable futures” by excelling in meeting the challenge of delivering over 70 programs

despite the challenges of a global pandemic.

Allison believes Rotary’s theme, “People of Action” is a driving force for Nelson Daybreak Rotary Club, fondly referred to as the ‘little club that could’. She takes pride in the club’s focus on their renewed strategic plan and ability to manage multiple community projects. She looks forward to working with members to leave a legacy by making things better in the community. Current top priority for this club is completion of the playground component of the Rosemont Multigenerational Park.

Membership recruitment and development is very important, and Allison would love to see more youth and broader diversity from the community in the club membership. She feels the club is blessed to have 3 former Youth Exchange Students as full-fledged Rotary

members and hopes that Rotary Alumni will re-engage and reap the benefits that come from Rotary membership.

Allison is a welcoming and enthusiastic president who is open to new ideas and to expanding the service mandate of Nelson Daybreak Rotary. Ultimately, she wants to provide a platform for people to join like-minded citizens to make good things happen in our community and our world.

Africa declared polio free and Rotarians commit to finishing the job of polio eradication A milestone in history has been reached and local Rotarians are celebrating that their annual donations to the Polio Plus program have helped to achieve that milestone. On August 25, the World Health Organization announced that transmission of the wild poliovirus has officially been stopped in all 47 countries of its African region.

When Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988, there were 350,000 cases of polio in 125 countries every year.

After decades of hard won gains in Africa, Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) — WHO, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Gavi, the vaccine alliance — are proclaiming the milestone an incredible public health achievement.

Rotary members have contributed nearly $890 million toward polio eradication efforts in the African region. Now Rotarians around the world have committed to raise $50 million per year to complete the job of eliminating cases in Afghanistan and Pakistan. All funds raised are matched by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation on a 2:1 basis. The Rotary Club of Nelson Daybreak’s goal is US$2000 and the Rotary Club of Nelson plans to raise $7500. In this time of Covid, Rotarians are strongly encouraging individuals to make donations through the local clubs and members will arrange through the Rotary Foundation Canada for a charitable tax receipt.

Nora Young, host and creator of CBC’s Spark, explores A Home in the Cloud: The Future of Libraries in the Digital Age in an online Zoom event on Oct. 6 at 6:30 p.m. The event is part of the Nelson Public Library’s centenary year programming.

The opportunities and challenges of the data-rich information age, and why the library is now more vital and necessary than ever, are among the topics Young will tackle.

VOTE IN THE PROVINCIAL ELECTION A provincial election has been called for Saturday, October 24, 2020.

We’re helping B.C. vote safely during the pandemic. Here’s what you can expect if you vote in person: • Physical distancing • Voting place capacity limits • Election officials wearing personal protective equipment (such as masks and face-visors) • Protective barriers • Hand sanitizing stations • Frequent cleaning of voting stations and frequently touched surfaces • Election workers trained on safe workplace guidelines and pandemic protocols Follow the instructions from election officials in the voting place to help maintain physical distancing.

You will be asked to sanitize your hands before and after voting.

If you are ill or self-isolating, do not visit a voting place. Request a vote-by-mail package or call Elections BC at 1-800-661-8683.

You can vote in person or by mail.

Provincial search and rescue award a surprise for Kaslo’s Don Hunt JOHN BOIVIN Local Journalism Initiative Reporter

A Kaslo man says he was taken aback when he was recognized for his contributions to search and rescue operations in the area.

Dr. Don Hunt was selected as one of six recipients of the 2020 Public Safety Lifeline volunteer awards last month.

“I was just amazed and shocked,” says Hunt. “It was very nice to be recognized.”

The awards, which are granted annually, recognize people who have made “exceptional contributions to emergency and disaster response” in the province. Hunt was recognized for his road rescue work.

Hunt joined Kaslo Search and Rescue six years ago, after retiring from a long career as a dentist in the village. In that time, he not only worked on the road rescue team, but served as treasurer and manager of the Kaslo SAR. “It’s hard on you,” he said of the sometimes-grim incidents he attended. “But it helps to have the team, to talk about it afterwards.”

At 74, he recently retired from search and rescue work. But he says the time he spent with the group was deeply rewarding.

“I learned an awful lot. The camaraderie is wonderful – there’s some really nice people who are just in-

terested in helping,” he says. “I miss the people, but I don’t miss being on call 24/7.”

The head of Kaslo SAR, Stefan Lettrari, said the lifeline award is an honour Hunt well deserves. “Don’s one of these guys who has a great heart. He is always willing to help and mentor others,” he says. “We have a bunch of new recruits on the team, and he’s a great role model for the next generation of rescuers.

“His leadership skills, his wonderful knowledge of our backcountry – if he didn’t know where a certain location was, you were in trouble.

He has awesome knowledge of the area you could plug into, which is invaluable.”

Hunt is the second Kaslo resident to be recognized for their service to SAR in as many years. Paddy Flanagan was given a Lifetime Achievement Award under the same program in 2019.

Hunt was one of six award recipients from the more than 10,000 volunteers in the province who dedicate their time to helping others in crisis.

Hunt was recognized for his work on road rescue; others were nominated for their air and ground search and rescue work, helping set up communication networks, and general support and co-ordination efforts for victims of natural disasters.

Public Works, Utilities & Transit Newsletter WATERING RESTRICTIONS STILL IN EFFECT LEVEL ONE WATER RESTRICTIONS Level One Water Restrictions, issued July 29, 2020 remain in place. Mandatory water conservation measures are put in place to alleviate demand on the City’s drinking water supply, and to ensure that water is prioritized for potable uses and adequate fire protection.

The City of Nelson’s Mandatory Water Conservation Measures are very easy to follow!

• If you live at an even # address, you can only water your lawn using a sprinkler or irrigation system on Wednesday and Saturday between 4:00AM-9:00AM & 7:00PM-10:00PM. • If you live at an odd # address, you may only water your lawn using a sprinkler or irrigation system on Thursday and Sunday between 4:00AM-9:00AM & 7:00PM-10:00PM. • Regardless of your address, you may water trees, shrubs, vegetables and flowers between 4:00AM-9:00AM & 7:00PM-10:00PM using a hose with shut-off nozzle.

• A drip irrigation system can be used at any time.

• All hoses must have an automatic hand-held shut-off device/nozzle present. Please refer to the infographic below for guidance on water usage during Level One. Keep in mind, to keep your STAGE 1 WATERING REGULATIONS: lawn healthy, it only needs 1” of water per week, either from rain or watering; this amount of water would soak the soil 6” deep.

ROAD WORK SAFETY

City crews are busy maintaining, replacing and renewing our critical infrastructure. Here are a few road safety tips to keep our workers and the public safe:

SLOW DOWN AND STAY ALERT! • Obey all posted signage and worker instructions.

• Work sites have many hazards.

• Watch for trucks and earth movers in work sites.

ELIMINATE DISTRACTIONS • While driving at any time, and especially in a construction zone, you need to have all of your attention focused on driving safely.

• Do not talk on your cellphone, or engage in any distracted driving behaviour.

DON’T TAILGATE • Traffic may be moving slowly - keep a safe following distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead.

• A longer distance will allow you to come to a sudden stop safely, if necessary.

URBALOO ON HALL ST

A new public washroom and drinking water fountain / bottle fill station was installed in July at the Waterfront Plaza adjacent to the gazebo and bike repair station. This project was partially funded with a generous grant from Trans Canada Trails. The new washroom was designed in Nelson and manufactured in British Columbia.

QUEEN ELIZABETH PARK UPGRADES

Queen Elizabeth Park began a three-year overhaul last October, supported by fundraising of over $300,000 by the Nelson Baseball Association. City Parks staff have completed an irrigation upgrade.

Work done by NBA includes a new warning track, foul poles, outfield fence, backstop netting, new roof on the washrooms, new dugouts, batting cages and a new infield. Additionally NBA plans to install new bleachers, resurface the old ones, place new sod, add an equipment building and a new digital scoreboard.

SWEEPING STREETS FOR LEAVES

Each fall, city crews remove leaves that have fallen from city boulevard trees. Crews will be working through the city on a neighbourhood by neighbourhood basis. Our leaf pickup schedule depends on the weather and where leaves fall but generally begins in the cooler uphill areas of the City and moves downhill.

What can residents do to help?

Residents should rake the leaves from the boulevard and sidewalk to the edge of the street against the curb. If heavy rains are in the forecast, we ask that you wait for fairer weather to move your leaves, to avoid clogging catch basins and potentially causing flooding. Be a good neighbour and remove leaves from around catch basins.

Moving your vehicle helps our crews to better remove leaves. In areas of the city with many parked cars and mature trees, temporary “no-parking” signs will be posted on sandwich boards to inform you of upcoming work. As a general rule, we ask that residents with off-street parking, park their vehicles off the road. If you must park on the street, and where possible, residents are asked to follow the “odd” and “even” parking rule; meaning that on “odd” numbered days you will park on the odd side of the street and on “even” numbered days you will park on the even side of the street. Vehicles parked in violation of these rules will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense.
