A couple of incidents in east Maple Ridge earlier this week, involving suggested predators, have residents on high alert.

Residents of the rapidly growing Albion neighbourhood turned to social media to share concerns about two incidents described as “alarming” and “worrisome.”

The first incident reportedly happened Saturday afternoon, while the other, according to an online post, happened Monday afternoon.

The first incident took place on Saturday, May 9 at about 9 a.m. when two men apparently approached Albion resident Dave Smith as he was walking his dog east along 102nd Avenue, by Kanaka Creek Coffee.

He noticed the two men walking along the other side of the street and when he reached 243rd Street the men crossed over and asked him if he liked 13-year-old girls.

Dear Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows Community Members, Thank you for doing your part over these last few months – it is because of your collective effort and sacrifice that we have been able to flatten the curve and save thousands of lives. Last week our government announced BC’s Restart Plan which is the first in a series of steps that we will take together to protect people and ensure that our province can come back from COVID-19 stronger than before. BC’s Restart Plan is informed by health experts, common sense, and practical decision-making. The restart will happen in phases, spaced over intervals of two to four weeks, and we will not move ahead unless it is safe to do so.

The next phase of our fight against COVID-19 begins in mid-May. This isn’t a return to normal but a “new normal” that allows for some easing of the restrictions we’ve been abiding by while ensuring that we continue to slow the rate of transmission.

Excessive speeder clocked 105 km/h over limit A man was caught going 105 kilometres above the speed limit in Pitt Meadows on Saturday.

A white Audi sedan was impounded after the driver was caught going 105 km above the seed limit.

The posted speed limit in the area is 60km.

“This type of driving is reckless and dangerous to

the public,” said Const.

Julie Klaussner with the Ridge Meadows RCMP. “Many families are taking this time to get outside for walks or bike rides so it’s important for drivers to be cautious because, particularly at these rates of

speed, there is no way you will be able to react in time enough to avoid deadly consequences,” she said.

A 33-year-old man was given an excessive speeding ticket and his vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days.

Maple Ridge’s Quinn Callander, 13, has been featured in a Forbes: 8 under 18 list for being one of “the young trailblazers stepping up during the pandemic.”

Callander was first mentioned in The News on April 6 for his effort using a 3D printer to build thousands of ear guards – devices that allow healthcare workers to tie medical masks to the back of their head, relieving pressure on their ears during a 12-hour shift.

May 8, Forbes published an article listing eight young trailblazers in the world, giving nod to Callander.

However, Callander’s mother Heather Roney said they were interviewed for the article quite some time ago, and the information needs to be updated.

One of the latest developments, Roney said, is that her son’s efforts have been refocused.

Instead of focusing on printing as many devices as he can, Callander has redirected to logistics and

distribution.

Recently, Ontario-based manufacturer MSB Industries reached out to Callander on Facebook and asked to contribute to the effort. Using an injection mould, the company

produced, donated, and shipped 25,000 ear guards.

“Now we’re working with Scouts Canada and we have a dedicated ordering system so people can request them.

They’re still of course free, but they can make a request right across Canada and we will send them out to them,” Roney said.

People interested in placing an order can do so by contacting quinncares@ scouts.ca The devices were created with healthcare workers in mind. However, Roney said the reach is expanding.

Roney estimated approximately 33,000 ear guards have been made with assistance of various companies.

“He’s incredibly humbled by the amount of attention that this project is getting and we continue to hear from people around the world who continue to print and donate,” she said.

After the suspect was arrested back in February, a constable with the Ridge Meadows RCMP street enforcement unit went about gathering more evidence using recently acquired specialized training, Const. Julie Klaussner explained Monday.

“These charges were approved in large part to the work of our SEU team,” added Ridge Meadows top cop Supt. Jennifer Hyland. “This specialized training is one example of how we utilize our resources and share our services for the communities that we serve.”

In February, 25-year-old Tyson Taylor Helgason was arrested Hyland and charged with two counts of break and enter, plus possession of stolen property and mischief valued at less than $5,000. Only one of the break-in charges originated in Pitt Meadows.

He now faces a swath of new charges, including the manufacture or transfer a prohibited firearm, 13 counts of break and enter, two counts of fraud valued at $5,000 or less, two counts of breach of a release order, and one count of assaulting a police officer.

Helgason has been remanded in custody until August.

Network comes together in time of crisis Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, and the Katzie First Nation organizations show just how resilient they are amid COVID

T

he unexpectedness of COVID-19 required service providers in Ridge Meadows to make unprecedented decisions in a very short period of time.

In an industry driven by client service and face-to-face support and care, organizations in our community moved quickly to ensure that the public was safe and that its staff were supported through their transition to working from home.

The first weeks of COVID-19 were filled with tech set up, planning meetings, and everyone learning new ways to connect virtually.

It was during these first weeks that our community really showed their grit.

Despite an atmosphere of unknowing, the leaders of our community non-profit organizations showed what they were made of and fearlessly lead their teams through the unknown.

Their priority was clear; to find new ways to keep services open and support a worried public in a safe way.

In the following weeks of COVID service, providers met virtually to share helpful resources and work together to identify the gaps in our Connecting community, such as Christina Shearme seniors unable to get groceries, or pick up their prescriptions; community members with food security issues; a parent population facing endless time at home with limited options for their children; and an increase in potential domestic conflict.

Our community has an amazing ability to connect.

So many who belong to the numerous helping tables in our community, such as Ridge Meadows Community Children’s Table, STORM (Stop Overdose Ridge Meadows), EVIR (Ending Violence in Relationships), Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Katzie Commu-

“When I was approaching my house I saw them going southbound on 244 and that was the last I seen them,” he added.

“Beware. Beware. Beware,” Smith shared on a private Facebook page, describing the passenger as having a red sleeveless shirt and shorts, and said he was “covered in tattoos.” The driver, he described as a “bigger” guy wearing shorts and a blue and black hoodie.

When Smith phoned police, he said, the dispatcher thanked him but didn’t take his name or any other contact information or details.

The other incident, also posted online, also reportedly involved a black Land Rover further east in Whonnock on Monday.

But this incident was a possible attempted abduction of a 10-year-old boy in the vicinity of 100th Avenue near 256th Street.

“Police have been notified,” read the social media post on the same private Facebook page.

Police have confirmed that they are looking into a suspicious occurrence that was reported to them on Monday, May 11 in Whonnock.

“This file is currently being investigated and because it is an active investigation I cannot speak to specific details,” said Const. Julie Klaussner with the Ridge Meadows RCMP, adding that the investigation is still in the early stages.

Although Klaussner could not get into details about the RCMP investigation she said that, in broader terms, “if any investigation reveals there is a threat to public safety we will put out a media release when appropriate to do so.”

Like dozens of other hair stylists in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, Ian McDonnell is anxiously awaiting word about when he can reopen his salon for business.

But his opening day, whenever that is, will be a bit different than most in the industry.

McDonnell owns Spin Hair Salon in the 20400block of Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge, and when he finally gets confirmation as to when he and his team can open the doors again for business, he and his daughter are going to mark Day One with a fundraiser.

Further, he’s hoping fellow hair stylists around town will jump on the proverbial band wagon.

“I am trying to organize a charitable movement for

the Friends In Need Food Bank,” he told The News.

As soon as the province started talking about relaxing the COVID restrictions and phasing in a restart plan for businesses, McDonnell started getting calls from clients anxious to book appointments.

“As we’ve been anticipating getting back to work our clients have been contacting us wondering if they can make appointments. It’s been hard all around. Hairdressers feel a keen closeness to their clientele, we have missed them, and we rely on them so much. It is tough not to be able to give them a clear picture of when we will return and what the salon experience will be like when we do return,” he said.

Until he gets a confirmation date for reopening, however, he can’t make any appointments. McDonnell

admitted his initial plan was to give first dibs to those whose appointments were cancelled back in March – when the industry was shut down. Afterall, he said, that was the only fair thing to do.

“But one of my best friends had, what I think, is a great idea,” he said.

Instead, he’s going to auction off to the highest bidders the first day’s appointments with both himself and his daughter, Teshia Bohemier, who’s also a stylist at his salon. And in addition to contributing all the money from the auction, the duo will also be donating their earnings from that day to the food bank.

“My daughter and I just thought it might be a nice way to give back to an overwhelmed local charity that more and more people are relying on,” said McDonnell, who’s been cutting hair since

1986 and opened Spin six years ago.

“Many have suffered financially due to the need to self isolate. Many have had to rely on the local food bank to be able to feed their families… Whomever pledges to give our local Friends In Need Food Bank the largest donation, will get a spot at the front of the queue with myself and my daughter Teshia Erin Bohemier, when we return to work.”

They’re taking bids for the Day One appointments on the Spin’s Facebook page.

Expecting to see between four and six clients each during that first day, McDonnell said he’s unsure how much money they’ll raise for the food bank that day, but he is challenging other local salons and hair stylists to consider doing something similar for the cause.

Outdoor pool stays closed Pitt Meadows facility shuttered for swimmer this summer Summer is still a ways off, but with higher than normal temperatures being recorded in Pitt Meadows recently, some might be thinking about hitting the pool.

Well, it’s off the books this year.

Due to logistical and safety concerns, Pitt Meadows Mayor Bill Dingwall said the city will not be opening the outdoor pool this summer.

“We know how much community members look forward to using the pool in the summer, so this was a tough decision for council,” he said.

“Through discussions with staff, we realized that the size of our pool wouldn’t accommodate social distancing measures, and Dingwall the safety of residents and staff is paramount to the city.”

The outdoor pool, located in the Harris Road Park, is typically opened on Canada Day, July 1 and remains operational through to the Labour Day weekend in September.

It is managed, on behalf of the municipality,

by Recreation Excellence.

Instead of participants being locked up in kennels at the shelter where they would have to phone friends and family to raise money to get them out, this year, they will be doing it from the comfort of their homes.

Last year, Lock-In for Love raised $6,000 for the Maple Ridge animal shelter and Shaw is hoping to still do the same this year – although she admits that being at home doesn’t have the same impact as being in a kennel.

They have also lost the exposure they would have had attending community events that have since been cancelled or reduced in scope due to COVID-19.

However, Shaw has seen an increase in pet food donations

through their Amazon Wish List, where donors can choose what they want to give and it is shipped directly to the shelter.

Another consequence of the COVID-19 crisis is that their low-cost spay and neuter program has been put on hold temporarily because it is considered an elective surgery for animals.

Every animal that is currently being adopted from the shelter will be accompanied by a surgery voucher for when it will be safe to do so again.

The SPCA will follow up with each adopter, to ensure the animal is fixed.

City of Maple Ridge is encouraging locals to share good experiences with local businesses – by giving a shout out, if you will, via social media.

Have you had a particularly great experience with a local business lately?

The City of Maple Ridge wants to know about it, and more importantly, it wants to share that news around town.

Using their Facebook page, and the hashtag #shoutoutMapleRidge, the City has solicited and garnered a number of responses in just a few short days.

Maybe a menu item was particularly tasty at a restaurant.

Maybe a local grocer went above and beyond to make sure you felt safe shopping in their store.

Or, maybe a local vendor made a curbside pickup exceptionally convenient.

Whatever the case may be, this is being hailed as a chance to give exceptional local businesses a

In turn, the City is sharing those experiences. In a few short days, there were dozens of posts.

Foundry Ridge Meadows youth requiring mental health & addictions support

The fourth annual Mad Hatter’s Parade and Tea Party will be going ahead this year – virtually.

Organizer Catherine Larnon-Trout, founder of the Mad Hatters Foundation, decided that instead of cancelling the event because of the COVID-19 crisis, she will host her own personal tea party on Facebook Live.

And, Larnon-Trout is asking participants to do the same from their own home.

The Mad Hatter’s Parade and Tea Party was started by Larnon-Trout in an effort to eliminate the stigma of mental illness.

In a lead-up to this years event, Larnon-Trout will be sharing recipes for scones and cucumber sandwiches and instructions on how to make the perfect cup of tea with participants who register.

She will also be sharing instructions on how to make a tea party hat and musical shakers for children to participate in the entertainment.

And, instead of having a physical parade of hats she will be asking people to post pictures of their tea parties and the hats they created to the live Facebook feed.

“There will be hat competitions and categories like there were before,” said Lar-

Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Bob D’Eith will be speaking again at this years event.

D’Eith’s brother has suffered from mental illness for more than 30 years.

Last year he spoke about his brother’s battles with schizophrenia, and how it impacted his family.

He explained that when his brother’s mental health started to decline his family had nowhere to turn.

And how they had to work tirelessly to get him into a safe facility.

“But challenges make you… stronger… I think we’ll get smarter and I think we’ll be better for it.”

Triple Tree Nurseryland was started by his parents in 1962. They lived through five years under German control in the Netherlands during the Second World War, he recounted.

“What they went through was hell,” their son said. “This is very awful, but it’s another thing. We’ll get through it… and every day, I arrive at work and say ‘we’re one day closer’ to it all being over.”

New faces coming in Van der Pauw said the devoted, older gardeners are still coming in.

But Triple Tree is also getting a new

crop of people coming in – new (many younger) gardeners anxious to get their hands dirty doing some planting and landscaping.

Most are wanting to grow a vegetable garden of some kind.

“Vegetables have always been big, and this year probably more so,” he said, noting that since COVID-19 he’s been promoting: “Plant your dinner and enjoy your family.”

They’re seeing a lot of first-timers taking up gardening – whether out of boredom or a newfound desire (accentuated by the luxury of time) to beautify their homes and gardens.

“Everyone is at home with their families, so they’re gardening,” van der Pauw said.

Whatever the reason, he predicts once newbies get a taste of gardening, they too will be hooked for life.

Sports & Recreation Rolley Lake reopened for day use Many provincial parks will open to the public today (Thursday, May 14), but Golden Ears remains closed until further notice With sunny weather ahead for the Victoria Day long weekend, Metro Vancouver staff are reminding people to enjoy the outdoors responsibly, and to ensure that local parks can be kept open moving forward.

Even though some restrictions are being lessened as British Columbians look ahead to officials implementing its restart plan, Dr. Bonnie Henry is still insisting people be cautious and cognisant about social distancing and washing hands.

Metro Vancouver board chair Sav Dhaliwal reiterated that people should visit parks in their own communities and neighbourhoods, rather than travelling farther afield in the region.

“Metro Vancouver has made every effort to keep our regional parks open during the COVID-19 public health emergency because we recognize their value for connecting with nature, reducing stress and maintaining physical and mental well-being,”

said Dhaliwal.

“It is up to all of our visitors to do their part and keep each other and our staff safe during this critical time.”

Following the recent COVID-19 updates, park visitors are being asked to follow some basic guidelines when they’re out: • Walk, bike, or take transit to avoid contributing to traffic and parking issues; • Maintain physical distance of at least two metres from others at all times, including in parking lots; • Dispose of tissues and other waste in designated garbage bins; • Pack it in, pack it out – do not leave any items behind in parks; • Comply with closures of playgrounds, nature play areas and picnic shelters; • Wash or sanitize hands frequently during the day and upon returning home; and • Stay home if you are sick.

Congregation unites to help during COVID #WereInThisTogether: Whonnock church leads by example, sharing their stories of how we’re all in this together How can we make a difference in our community in responding to the COVID crisis?

The parish of Holy Spirit Anglican in Whonnock, with hearts of gold and a hunger to help others, asked and answered that question.

Although we are a small Christian family, about to celebrate 100 years of worshipping in our church in 2021, we are mindful that we are called to respond to this unprecedented contemporary challenge.

Pain grips our hearts as we pray for the curve to flatten.

Meanwhile, we collected funds and volunteers purchased groceries for families affected by COVID circumstances.

Other members collected produce from farmers and made it available to those in need.

We asked local health care providers what could help them beyond words of encouragement and comfort, and this query was welcomed and so members came together to sew face masks.

On April 14, masks were handed over to Cathy Mellalieu, director of residential services at ARCUS Com-

munity Resources, provider of specialized care for vulnerable adults.

Colourful cotton fabrics had been reborn as face masks – much to the delight of their clients!

The sewers hope to do more.

One said her husband was having nostalgic moments as he used to hear the sewing machine as his wife sewed clothes for their children when they were little.

Handmade “good-wishes signs” were placed on the lawn of the church at Easter.

We even placed lights on our homes in the shape of a heart.

A letter to say “we care and are praying for you” was sent to the Whonnock Community Association for distribution to our neighbourhood.

Salvation Army’s Ridge Meadows Ministries is temporarily expanding shelter capacity for its existing clients – it started Tuesday.

The 25-spot physical distancing shelter is an emergency response to the COVID-19 pandemic “to help reduce crowding, allowing further safe physical distancing,” the local chapter of The Salvation Army told The News.

“This is a temporary shelter for vulnerable people living in our community already,” said Mark Stewart, executive director of Ridge Meadows Ministries.

The shelter for existing clients opened Tuesday and will be in place until the end of July.

“We started moving some of our more vulnerable cli-

Staff will be on site at all hours, to offer support and manage operations.

“We’ve been planning this for a while… we actually have new showers, we’re getting pods installed [Wednesday],” Stewart said. “We wanted to actually do it with as much dignity as possible.”

The Salvation Army has had a presence in the communities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows since 1990, according to its website.

Ted was born in Wilhelmshaven, Germany on May 26, 1927 and had a long and amazing life. He had so many chapters in his life story, some were good and some were not. There would not be enough space or time to write about Ted’s life or about how much he cared for others. He treated everyone he met with kindness and dignity, and his interest in what they had to say was sincerely genuine. Ted also had an incredible caring nature with all animals and it showed in how much his pets were devoted to him. But of most importance was the love Ted had for his family. His wife, Heidi, was the “love of my life� he always said. Together they raised their two children and then they were able to watch and be part of their three beautiful granddaughters growing years. We were blessed to also have Ted share family gatherings with his four great-grandchildren. Ted told us many times, “there has to be rough and bumpy times in your life, then you will appreciate the smooth roads�.

It is with great sadness, we announce the loss of our beloved father, Lance David Marcano, who passed away Sunday April 26th, 2020. He is survived by his son Jason Marcano (Dana), daughter Carmyn Marcano (Trevor), grandson Julien Marcano and longtime companion Peggy Hall. Lance was born January 16th, 1938 of humble beginnings in Trinidad & Tobago and moved to Canada with the 1st place prize money he won in a singing competition at the annual Caribbean Carnival Festival as a young adult.

Shortly after he arrived in BC, he married Gabrielle Huyton on June 19th 1971, and built a family together. Through his love of music he formed the popular Trinidad Cavaliers Steel Band, and performed with his band members at various venues around Greater Vancouver including the PNE. A self-made success, Lance started his career as an independent Trucking Contractor, and on July 2nd, 1981 began his 17 year career as a Business Representative with the Teamsters Union No. 213. At that time, the Union was trying to provide better representation on construction sites to the Owner Operators, and by the late eighties, several dump truck confrontations began in the Lower Mainland, Prince George and Fort Nelson. Lance was instrumental in affecting positive changes that led to better wages for Owner Operators across the Province.

In the early 90’s Lance was appointed by the Executive Board to sit as a Trustee of the Teamsters Local Union No. 213 Health & Welfare Plan. He was also appointed to co-chair the Joint Training School Board of Trustees in 1996. And he was a delegate to the International Convention in 1991 and 1996.

After his many accomplishments as a Business Representative, Lance retired on July 31st, 1998, and settled into a life of leisure where he spent much of his time visiting with family and friends and traveling through Europe, Asia and back to his homeland of Trinidad and Tobago many times.

Above all, Lance was a well-respected man who was deeply loved and will be remembered by many, as a man of few words, and blessed with both wit & charm. God bless you Dad, may you rest in peace, we will miss you.

The immediate family will announce a Celebration of Life service in the coming months, when travel and gathering restrictions are lifted. Thank you so much for all your prayers and messages of love and support during this difficult time. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be sent to Diabetes Canada.
