Transition house expects to see more women escaping violence

Nelson’s transition house is preparing for a surge in calls even though it has seen a drop in numbers of women and children needing to escape domestic violence.

Anna Maskerine, program manager of the Aimee Beaulieu Transition House, said Friday the decrease has corresponded with the start of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in March.

But Maskerine expects that to change.

“We’re trying to brace for impact, quite honestly,” she said. “It feels like another calm before the storm.”

The transition house is an eight-bed shelter that has operated since 1995. It is also usually full — an annual report on homelessness released last year showed 74 women and 33 children used the house in 2018-19.

A further 139 women and 30 children meanwhile were turned away because of lack of space.

Maskerine’s concerns have been echoed around the globe.

United Nations secretary-general António Guterres said in an April 5 statement that governments should focus on women’s safety during the pandemic.

“For many women and girls, the threat looms largest where they should be safest,” said Guterres.

In the United Kingdom, a domestic violence hotline saw a 49 per cent increase in calls during the lockdown.

In Canada, nine women have been killed by men since April 1, according to a statement Wednesday by Battered Women’s Support Services.

RCMP have also said the killings of 22 people in Nova Scotia, Canada’s worst recorded mass shooting, began with the killer at-

tacking his partner.

Although calls for service in Nelson fell off in March, they have increased by 40 per cent in Victoria.

Maskerine said a similar demand will eventually occur in Nelson, and her staff have already begun making changes to accommodate for it.

Because distancing requirements limit the number of staff in the transition house, Maskerine said some have moved to outreach roles.

She knows more women need help right now, and hopes her service isn’t overwhelmed when the demand catches up.

“I know it’s going to come,” she said. “It’s just a matter of time.”

Council approves city hall mural design

Nelson city council has given the goahead to a mural design West Kootenay artist Tyler Toews will paint on the front of city hall this month.

That approval at the May 4 meeting was the final step in a lengthy selection and design process conducted by a jury of local business, arts, and government representatives. The working group selected the artist from 26 applicants, then worked with him to select and refine the design.

The project was sponsored by the Nelson and District Arts Council.

“Tyler was so understanding about trying to create something that is going to appeal to the whole community no matter who you are,” said Sydney Black, the arts council’s executive director. “We needed that because it is a building that has a lot of serious business in it. Tyler worked with jury feedback, and feedback from the Cultural Development Committee.”

She said the guiding concept was community.

“Community resilience, bringing people together, being stronger, being united. He effectively portrayed that in the piece.”

City planner Sebastien Arcand told council the plan is based on accepted international best practices in urban bike routes, on his own research, and on feedback the city has received over the past few months from an open house with 100 to 150 attendees, written surveys, and an online discussion process with 188 participants.

The cycle route plan has been before council twice before and was the subject of a community working group led by councillor Brittny Anderson.

Nelson council has made three key decisions about its bike route plan for the city, although further work on them will depend on receipt of a provincial government grant.

High Street will become a one-way route for vehicles, making room for a two-direction bike lane. The direction of the one-way vehicle traffic has not yet been decided.

The other option the planning department presented to council at its May 4 meeting was to keep two-way traffic on High Street. This would have required creating a protected bike lane and reducing two-way vehicle traffic volumes. Council rejected it.

Intersection change There would be changes to the intersection at Anderson Street and Nelson Avenue to facilitate the transition for bikes between Third Street and High Street. This will

include converting the block of Anderson Street beside Hume School to one-way from Third Street to Nelson Avenue.

Arcand said he estimates about five per cent of Nelson residents commute by bicycle and that 30 to 40 per cent of residents will never cycle.

“That leaves another 30 to 40 per cent that is interested but concerned. We are trying to find a middle ground. We are not designing this for the strong and fearless who are already cycling and who will commute by bike no matter what infrastructure we have.”

Cycling infrastructure is mandated by Nelson’s Official Community Plan, which says that by 2040 active transportation (cycling and walking) should account for the largest share of local trips.

A man and a woman are facing charges after a drug bust Thursday

by Nelson police in the 800 block of Vernon Street.

Police say they got a warrant after a “lengthy” investigation into reports of drug activity in the home.

The pair, who were known to police, were arrested inside and a “significant” amount of suspected street fentanyl, crystal meth, and cash were located.

Starting June 29, Nelson residents will put their curbside recycling in a reusable bin, not in a plastic bag.

The city, which has purchased 4,000 bins for $80,000, will distribute them free to households including legal suites during the month of June.

Nothing else about recycling will change.

“The thing we most want people to know,” said Nelson’s public works director Colin Innes, “is that it is just a change in receptacle.

Everything else stays the same.”

Recycle BC is making this change across the province. The non-profit organization is responsible for residential packaging and paper recycling in B.C. The city picks up recycling from Nelson curbsides for Recycle BC on contract.

Innes said city crews will accept no substitutes – residents must use the bin supplied by the city.

Kootenay Lake school district’s superintendent says preliminary plans are in the works for a limited return to classrooms

by June.

Christine Perkins said Thursday that School District 8 hopes to offer kindergarten to Grade 5 students a slight return to normality.

Full-time classes won’t occur, but Perkins said classrooms may be split up and alternate visits to school throughout the week.

The change is being made to support parents who return to work as the province gradually re-opens.

“It will be a gentle invitation,” she said.

“You’re more than welcome to drop your child off and have them in school to learn while you’re going back to work,

that sort of thing.

“But we’re still working that out, there’s nothing concrete yet.”

Perkins stressed the logistics of the plan are still being discussed with the education ministry and internally at the district.

There is no set date for a return to classes, but she said the district wants to provide more information to staff and parents prior to the Victoria Day long weekend.

Last week, Premier John Horgan said the provincial government wanted to expand in-person schooling on a voluntary basis for kindergarten to Grade 12 students as part of a number of initiatives meant to ease restrictions during the COVID19 pandemic.

A full resumption of classes, he said, would begin in September.

Perkins said Grade 6-to-12 students would continue to learn remotely for the remainder of this school year, although the district was considering periodic visits with teachers by appointments.

workers, custodians and some teachers and education assistants have already returned to schools, according to Perkins.

Last month the district began allowing the children of essential workers to return to schools.

Parks across the West Kootenay are set to re-open today, with some exceptions.

Premier John Horgan announced last week that the public could access most provincial parks in one of several changes made to ease restrictions on physical distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BC Parks also says most campgrounds will re-open on June 1, although some of the most visited sites will remain closed. Some playgrounds will still be off-limits, as will hot springs, halls and picnic shelters.

In the Nelson area, Grohman Narrows, Kokanee Creek and West Arm parks will open again.

Other locations set to open include: Syringa Provincial Park; Lockhart Beach, Lockhart Park and Pilot Bay; Erie Creek; and Beaver Creek.

The NDP for their part have what they call a simple solution. Just give every adult in Canada $2,000 a month until the pandemic subsides, and then sort out who deserves it at tax time. Sounds like the idea of a 10 year old. I sure hope the NDP opts for an adult for leader soon, while they still have some small semblance of a political party.

I think the government should have been a little more careful not to make people better off not working than they were when they were working, but I guess if no one is willing to work after this is over, we can just bring in some more foreign workers. No problemo.

Make no mistake though, as a friend of mine recently pointed out, the government has just taken everyone’s credit card, and charged up $6,500 or so, and it is going to take a lot of paying back.

Others going along with the conventional wisdom might need these services and it wouldn’t be fair if these services were not available to them because of some intentional reckless behaviours. Some of those affected could be young, healthy people, or your grandparents or your children. It seems to me to be quite selfish to thumb your nose at this. If you don’t care about your own health, do it for someone else.

Yes, hospitals are currently not overwhelmed with COVID cases in our region, and that’s a good thing!

It’s called “preparation,” just in case the hospitals are needed. It’s like preparing for a hurricane and boarding up your windows, just in case.

This preparedness needs to be done ahead of time, not while the storm is happening, and that’s why hospitals are in a state of readiness.

If somehow we manage to avoid the hurricane (or COVID), we should consider ourselves fortunate.

We shouldn’t look back and say “we did this all for nothing.” We should appreciate our good fortunes.

“This virus is a beast,” according to a well respected Nelson doctor.

It doesn’t discriminate based on income, race, gender or anything else.

Bill Gates is not the enemy; ignorance and lack of education over the past 50 years is the enemy. 5G is not a delivery system for COVID and chem trails are not out to get you!

Just ride this out for another few weeks or so. Pay attention to the advice, recommendations and requirements by qualified doctors, and quit looking for Youtube and fake news outlets to support your conspiracy beliefs. If you are so anti-government, please don’t accept any financial aid; that would be way too hypocritical. Stand up for, and demonstrate your beliefs and your defiance.

Doctors and hospitals will not turn you away if you’ve contracted the virus, nor will they question your beliefs or even judge your behaviours.

They will treat you as a human being who needs health care (even if signed an affidavit). Nurses, doctors, first responders, and all essential frontline workers deserve our thanks and respect. Please don’t compromise their well-being.

Howie Ross Nelson Government rifle ban undemocratic I am a legally abiding firearms owner. I have a restricted and non-restricted firearms license. I am writing in regards to the Liberals’ firearms ban that was not taken to parliament for debate. The majority of my firearms are non restricted. My restricted firearm is an old relic from

1945. It saddens and frustrates me how the government has gone about this ban.

I follow every single law in regards to my firearms. They are always locked inside a gun cabinet and have disabling locks on them.

My restricted firearm has a trigger locked and is locked in a gun case which is also locked in a gun cabinet. I go straight to the gun range and straight home after I am done target shooting. When I signed up for a restricted firearms license, I had agreed to the police coming to my house at any time to check if I am following the law.

As a firearms owner I can have my firearms and my license taken from me for violent crimes like physical altercations, uttering threats, robbery, etc. There is too much risk in the potential to lose my firearms.

I don’t engage in altercations of any kind. I enjoy my privilege of owning firearms. It’s a privilege I have earned from not engaging in criminal activities. Target shooting is my biggest hobby.

Now I have to worry about my firearms being banned after jumping all the legal hoops to be able to legally own them. So many Canadians jumped the same hoops. We have strict gun laws which are great if they keep firearms out of the hands of criminals. Law-abiding firearms owners do not deserve to have our property taken from us. We have no criminal record and now with the bans on firearms we have to sell or surrender them. If not, we can face criminal charges. That to me is unfair and unjust.

It seems no democratic process was used in the bans of these rifles.

I am but one of many legally abiding firearms owners in Canada. It’s statistically proven deaths from driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol are substantially higher then deaths by firearms, especially ones by law-abiding citizens. Firearms are not as scary and deadly as people think, especially when it comes to being in the hands of people who follow the law.

Ryan Brady Nelson Time to address diesel emissions That stinky diesel exhaust may be more dangerous than previously thought. It has been well known that breathing diesel exhaust causes headaches and nausea in many people but what isn’t well known is that diesel exhaust is categorized as a Class 1 carcinogen. It can damage DNA in our cells in a way that leads to cancer.

The list of detrimental effects of diesel exhaust is long but here are a few: eye, nose, and throat irritation, asthma, a variety of lung and heart diseases, lung cancer, bladder cancer, birth defects and reproductive harm, as well as brain and immune system issues. The diesel exhaust particulates that we smell are heavily laden with hundreds of toxic chemicals.

Diesel owners are particularly bad about idling especially when they first start the engine and this is the most toxic of the exhaust. Like all internal combustion engines they run much cleaner when warm and operating but the exhaust from burning diesel is far dirtier than from gasoline. Currently in Italy there may be evidence that atmospheric

pollutants may transport COVID19 as well as other diseases. Diesel is one of the main sources of soot and particulate exposure in our daily lives. Is it putting us at further risk?

In many cities around the world like Paris, Madrid, and Hamburg, nonessential diesel vehicles are now banned. Older diesel vehicles are banned in many more areas. This move is in recognition of the health hazards posed by diesel exhaust.

There is a place for diesel powered vehicles. Large heavy transport vehicles or industrial equipment where high torque is required is a suitable use but cars and pickup trucks aren’t.

There are much cleaner alternatives and these should be encouraged by our governments.

By default, the clean air that COVID-19 societal measures have provided is reducing respiratory and cardio vascular admissions in hospitals around the world. Every year 4.6 million people die due to air pollution — more than car accidents.

It is time we seriously address air pollution and diesel vehicles, especially older vehicles that need to have their tail pipe emissions tested.

When we get back to the “new normal,” we need to be working to maintain the good air quality we’ve been experiencing during the COVID-19 crisis. Cleaning up emissions from diesel vehicles is a great place to start. In the mean time, diesel owners can help by reducing idling and turn the engine off when not driving.

Contrary to popular belief, a long warm-up period is not required for diesel engines (or any engine) but in fact does more harm than good.

Leafs’ Campbell, Wilson, Erichuk sign with new teams

The Nelson Leafs’ scoring leaders will be wearing different jerseys next season, and one of them will have to learn a new language too.

Shawn Campbell, who led the Leafs with 31 goals during the last regular season, has signed a deal with the Stuttgart Rebels of the Regionalliga Süd-West, the fourth highest division of hockey in Germany.

The 20-year-old forward was aging out of Junior B hockey when the Leafs’ season was abruptly cancelled during the playoffs by the COVID-19 pandemic.

He was a key part of Nelson’s offence, finishing with 19 assists and 50 points in 39 games.

The Castlegar native made his KIJHL debut with his hometown Rebels during the 2015-16 season. He had 82 goals and 77 assists in 163 career games in the league.

Ellis said temperatures at the weather station at the West Kootenay Regional Airport in Castlegar were 0.6 C cooler on average.

The station received just 21 millimetres — or 35 per cent — of

Caney’s concerns also extend to the humanitarian sector at large.

Most organizations rely on donations or government assistance to operate, which he expects will dry up.

He worries too that the pandemic will impact just how many people want to take less money to work for NGOs. “We’ll see how it all plays out. I don’t know, but I think already within the health care industry, many [current or future] health care workers are seeing very real consequences of the job, especially when we are working in a highly infectious viral emergency.”

But for now, he isn’t seeing anyone on the front lines himself.

Caney has stayed put in a house in Islamabad, where he’s visited by staff and struggles to find supplies for Doctors Without Borders’ medical personnel.

Like everyone he works with, Caney worries about his own health. When he’s stressed, he tries to make use of the home’s gym equipment. He’s been using it a lot.

“If anything,” he says, “I’m healthier than when I arrived.”

Paul Caney has made a career helping others by knowing a lot about everything, but not so much about any one thing.

In 1994, he was recruited by Médecins Sans Frontières, known in North America as Doctors Without Borders. His cousin, who was visiting Calgary seeking staff for the humanitarian organization, asked Caney what his expertise was.

At the time Caney was working in the film industry, which required some of the same skills his cousin was looking for. He could operate a radio.

He could set up a generator. He knew how to drive in the mountains.

“Anyway, they asked me if I was interested,” he says now. “I sort of thought they were a little flaky and said yeah, sure.”

The Nelson and District Arts Council has proudly hosted events that have become instrumental in supporting local artists for over five creative decades.

Its flagship event, ArtWalk 2020, is in the early stages of preparation and the Arts Council’s priority is to keep our community of arts-lovers and artists healthy and safe.

The Arts Council is working hard to be proactive during the COVID19 health care crisis and will develop a digital gallery platform for visual artists collaborating with the local business community to benefit both.

This platform will also include artisans this year to provide support since they won’t be participating in farmers’ markets due to current regulations.

The application fees for both artists and venues have been waived for everyone in an effort to alleviate financial pressures related to the current COVID-19 economy.

Two openings will be live stream presentations of local performance artists, who will be safely perform from their homes, and will be featured on ArWalk’s website and so-

This will allow for local performance artists to continue to be paid for their work in a climate where almost all summer performance opportunities have been cancelled.

The Arts Council will connect with the local business community who will support artists by “hosting” them on their social media pages.

“We will create artist feature posts for a business to share with their networks in lieu of physically being able to hang artwork in their establishments,” the Arts Council said in a prepared statement. “These links will connect to our ArtWalk gallery where patrons can directly connect with the artists to make their purchases.”

Free employment training program goes virtual SUBMITTED

For the first time, Kootenay job seekers will be able to prepare themselves for rewarding careers in the retail, accommodation, food service and tourism sectors from the comfort of their own homes.

Kootenay Career Development Society’s RAFT program has gone virtual in response to the COVID19 pandemic.

The free five-week training and certification program is being conducted entirely via an online learning platform to adhere to physical distancing guidelines while enabling participants to connect with one another.

The virtual setting is more accessible to job seekers who might face barriers to attending in person, such as lack of transportation

or childcare. Additionally, participants build digital literacy in this online setting. It is also a supportive and positive environment in this time of self-isolation and physical distancing.

RAFT prepares individuals to work in restaurants, hotels, retail stores and other hospitality and tourism settings. Participants can gain certifications like Serving it Right, WHMIS, SuperHost and Food Safe. They learn how to create effective resumes, conduct job searches, build networks and make industry connections that will help them land the job they want.

In addition to helping job seekers, the RAFT program benefits local businesses and employers by helping prospective employees increase industry-specific skills that will be in demand

once in the recovery stage of the pandemic.

The Program is free and offers food, clothing and childcare subsidies, as well as completion bonuses.

The next RAFT program will run May 25 to June 25 online.

To apply, participants must be legally entitled to work in Canada as a citizen/ permanent resident or protected person; not a full-time student; and unemployed or precariously employed. Participants must have access to a computer and the internet. If interested in participating in the program, submit a resume and a cover letter expressing your interest in the program to raft@kcds.ca One participant said: “The program changed my life. It gave me the skills, connections and confidence to go out and get a job.”

School District 8 receives mask donation

One positive aspect of this difficult time is the numerous examples of others who have gone out of their way to care about their neighbours.

The Kootenay Lake school district has had this happen for them from one of its global partners.

Xavier Song and his family, who will soon be moving to Nelson and who have been partners with the Kootenay Lake International Program for many years, have sent 200 masks to support the community.

Song, the CEO of G-Elite Education company, currently lives in Chengdu, China which is famous for its wild panda population. His company has co-operated with School District 8 since 2015 and has sent more than 15 Chinese students and teachers to enjoy the short-term winter camps hosted by SD8 Kootenay Lake.

He and his family visited the Kootenay in January 2016 and immediately fell in love with the scenery and people and saw international education business opportunities.

Song, his wife and daughter have planned to arrive in Nelson in July, if borders are opened. He looks forward to making more friends in Nelson and learning more local history.

“My family and I will live in Nelson, so the mask donation is certainly my duty as a member of the Nelson family,” Song said.

The masks will likely be used to support schools, but SD8 Kootenay Lake is also contacting local health authorities to inform them of this gift in case a greater need is identified.

Taghum Hall to host May markets

Without the traditional West Kootenay EcoSociety Garden Fest on Baker Street this year, local gardeners are looking for the vegetable starts they need to get their gardens planted, and local farmers and food producers are anxious to get their products to market.

Despite uncertainty over funding, the EcoSociety anticipates beginning their 2020 market season by June 6. In the meantime, however, Taghum Hall will fill the gap by hosting three May markets.

Taghum Hall’s history with markets began when the EcoSociety cancelled their winter markets and vendors needed a place to sell their goods during the winter. Taghum Hall’s season has expanded over the past few years to include monthly markets from October through April.

While acknowledging that local markets belong squarely with the EcoSociety, which has successfully been running the Cottonwood Market for 25 years, Taghum Hall joins them in supporting local food producers and celebrating talented area artisans.

However, there will be no artisans at Taghum Hall’s markets (May 16, 23, 30). As required by the BC Centre for Disease Control and provincial COVID-19 guidelines, farmers’ markets across the province, declared an essential service, can provide only food products and edible seedlings for sale.

Taghum Hall market organizers will ensure that all COVID-19 safety protocols are in place: market goers may have to wait their turn to enter the site, must observe strict social distancing and hand washing protocols, and respect the

“Shop, Don’t Stop” signage.

Leave your reusable shopping bags and baskets at home.

Where feasible, cashless transaction will be encouraged, so be prepared to use pointof-sale devices or provide e-transfers from a cell phone. Alternately, equip yourself with a variety of currency to avoid the need to receive change for your purchases.

While the Taghum Hall markets will by necessity be smaller than the Cottonwood and Baker Street markets, there will still be plenty of choice for shoppers, despite generous distancing between vendor booths.

Eggs, meat, greens, breads, seedlings, samosas, chocolate (yes, chocolate is a food group!), and more will be available.

he week of March 16 was a strange one.

It felt a little like our daily team video call was a chorus of “I’m okay. Are you okay?” for a little while, until

You & The Law® FAMILY LAW ISSUES AND COVID-19 Our lives have been turned upside down by the Covid-19 pandemic due to the harm this contagious virus can cause. And it may be a long time before a vaccine is available.

To fight the spread of the disease, health guidelines say we’re to stay home as much as possible. We have to self-isolate upon returning from outside the country or if showing symptoms. Non-essential businesses and services are currently closed.

Steps to protect yourself, your family and everyone you come in contact with will likely still be necessary until there’s a vaccine, even though restrictions may be relaxed over time.

What does this mean if you have family law issues during this extraordinary time?

For example, one of the main recommendations for now is “social distancing” – maintaining a minimum distance of 2 metres (6.6 feet) from other people, since they (or you) may carry and spread this airborne disease even without having any symptoms.

In light of this, can you just ignore an agreement or court order when it’s your ex’s turn to have the child, to minimize back-and-forth travel and your child’s extra exposure?

Or what if your ex simply refuses to return the kids after their turn to have them is up?

First, you should know that, though regular operations have been suspended, our courts are still available in some cases. And legal services are designated as essential services. So take comfort that you won’t be left high and dry if big problems come up.

But be aware of some key points.

In light of the measures to fight the virus’s spread, the courts and law offices have had to adjust how they operate, just like other essential service providers.

For example, rather than in-person meetings, you might have to consult with your lawyer by phone or video call about what to do in your particular situation.

And for now, the courts will only deal with urgent matters (again remotely, in line with health protocols, such as by video call or teleconference).

One recent example: The BC Provincial Court decided only a court application about the return of a child wrongfully retained by one parent was urgent.

Other, non-emergency parts of the same application were not.

Be aware that, where possible, agreements and court orders between ex-spouses must be followed, but in a way that protects the children.

The courts will first expect you to try and work out common sense practical solutions with your ex where possible.

And keep in mind the overriding principle that still applies even during Covid-19 – what matters most is always the best interests of the children.

Dateline May 6, 1920 Smoke ascending from heaps of debris; teams hauling rubbish away, and citizens painting houses, repairing fences, clearing vacant lots and lanes, and generally putting a bright face on the city’s appearance yesterday, all testified to the fact that the spirit of clean-up day was fully observed, both in the city and Fairview.

In many cases the date had been anticipated by enthusiastic gardeners, and some well kept gardens were noted. The maple trees in bud last week are now in flower, and most trees are leafing. Birds are nesting; one busy robin was seen availing itself of a friendly dripping hydrant to collect the mud underneath for its nest; and all the signs of spring marked a beautiful sunny day.

Municipal offices were closed yesterday, and as it was a business half-holiday, the date was opportune for people to get busy – which they did.

Dateline May 8, 1920 Excavation work has been started on the projected commodious new garage of the Nelson Auto Company on Baker being led by the proprietors, K.H. Grenfell and R. Peebles, to F.R. McCharles.

When completed, the building will be a two-story structure measuring 50 feet by 60 feet, with the walls and ground floor made of concrete, and the second floor and roof of wood.

Large windows on the sides and at the rear will admit plenty of light to the show rooms and the workshops.

The front of the building which will face Baker Street, will be of red brick. The second story will be on a level with the sidewalk, will be entered from Baker Street, and will contain a show room for the display of cars and accessories, and also the offices and stores.

On the ground floor, which will be entered from Vernon Street, provision will be made for two washracks for car washing, the work benches, and all

Nelson Public Library launches takeout service SUBMITTED

The Nelson Public Library has unveiled an innovative way to put library materials in the hands of readers. Library members can now place pick up orders for library materials.

Library Takeout @ NPL is a click or call-and-collect service.

Staff at the Nelson library will gather books from the shelves to be picked up by library members.

Members can request specific titles or ask the librarians to choose

titles.

When Library Takeout orders are ready, materials are packed in single-use paper bags. They can be picked up during pre-scheduled appointment times in order to control the number of people coming to the library. Staff members will place Library Takeout bags in spaces designed for social distancing for a contactless pickup transaction. When materials are returned to the library, they will be isolated for at least 72 hours.

“We heard from many community members about how they missed reading physical books,” says chief librarian Tracey Therrien.

“Library Takeout allows the library to safely reinstate this service. Though the library continued to serve the community virtually through our online library, welcoming back members to our building and getting physical books into their hands is exciting for both our members and library staff. Reading has helped many of us during this

stressful time and now we can offer even more reading opportunities.”

To ensure the program complies with health and safety recommendations, the library sought advice from local health authorities and the City of Nelson’s health and safety department to provide feedback on the proposed plan.

During the initial launch phase of this program, the library is taking requests for materials online or by phone, and offering holds and pickup services by request.

You can now order books over the phone from the Nelson Public Library, for takeout in single-use paper bags.

Après l’hiver, le premier mini-album de Véronique Trudel Inspirée par des artistes tels qu’Ingrid St-Pierre ou encore Fred Pellerin, Véronique Trudel fait de la scène depuis 15 ans. Elle défend que la douceur peut être une grande force. C’est peutêtre pour cela que sa voix douce soulève de grandes émotions.

Aujourd’hui, Véronique nous présente son premier mini-album intitulé Après l’hiver. C’est un projet qui a commencé il y a trois ans dans l’ouest du Québec, en Abitibi-Témiscamingue. Les six pièces qui le composent offrent chacune un univers différent aux couleurs intimistes. Elles illustrent son parcours d’artiste, de femme et de mère à travers les années.

Un projet qui a voyagé En 2017, Véronique décide d’offrir à son public qui la suit depuis ses débuts, quelque chose de tangible, que chacun puisse posséder. Elle fait donc le choix de produire son premier minialbum.

Le projet a commencé lorsque l’artiste habitait en AbitibiTémiscamingue. Elle enregistre les pistes de base dans les studios de Sébastien Greffard à Rapide-Danseur. Sébastien est un artiste multidisciplinaire reconnu de la scène témiscabitibienne. Puis, Luzio Altobelli rentre en scène. Il est son ami, son mentor depuis plus de 10 ans et le directeur musical du projet. Luzio Altobelli a formé le groupe Manouche, actif sur la scène montréalaise dans les années 2000. Il a ensuite notamment fait parti du groupe Bon Débarras. Il est réputé pour ses nombreuses collaborations, ses talents de compositeur et d’arrangeur musical. Véronique travaille à distance avec Luzio, à Montréal, pour amorcer la réalisation de l’album. Luzio connaît très bien l’univers de Véronique et il est très attentif à l’évolution de son travail. En 2018, Véronique s’installe avec sa famille à Nelson et continue de travailler à distance sur le projet. C’est un an plus tard qu’elle lance une campagne de sociofinancement pour produire l’album pendant que Luzio continue de travailler tranquillement sur ses arrangements musicaux.

En novembre 2019, elle se rend au Québec pour occuper, pendant 5 jours, le Studio P. de Pasquale Caruana à Roxton Pond, près de Montréal. Pasquale est un musicien autodidacte, qui a tourné sur les routes de la France, la Suisse et la Belgique.

Le travail avance grâce à la participation de musiciens talentueux: Charles Trudel (piano), Amélie Lamontagne (violon), Sophie Coderre (violoncelle), Sébastien Greffard (guitare électrique, guitare basse et slide), Jean-François Gasse – D’Jef (clarinette et boca horn) et Luzio Altobelli (percussions et accordéon).

Après l’hiver L’album présente six pièces possédant six univers différents. Cette hétérogénéité représente bien la complexité de Véronique. En effet, la tonalité oscille entre douceur et rage, sentiments avec lesquels la personnalité de Véronique peut valser. Les thèmes des pièces sont le courage, l’hypersensibilité, la dépression post-partum, la spiritualité et la quête de sens. Bien des choses qui feront écho au coeur des auditeurs.

L’ambiance est tout de même différente d’une pièce à l’autre. Dans Après l’hiver, on retrouve une atmosphère triste et méditative avec peu d’instruments tandis que la pièce T’enraciner est une ballade puissante très orchestrale accompagnée d’accordéon, de violon, de violoncelle et de batterie.

Il y a aussi des pièces, comme Prière, qui existent depuis 15 ans, tandis qu’ Homme ouragan a été écrite en 2019. Véronique nous explique que cette pièce est une pièce-baume, pour panser les blessures du passé et pour mieux avancer.

L’artiste nous confie qu’elle n’avait pas pour ambition de lancer l’album sur des plateformes musicales. En effet, l’idée était de partager le produit final avec ses proches et ceux qui la soutiennent depuis le début. Reconnaissons que la détermination d’une telle artiste ne pouvait définitivement la soustraire à partager son oeuvre au monde qui l’entoure. Après l’hiver sortira le 29 mai 2020.

James Ernest Donaldson passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 1, 2020 at Mountain Lake Seniors Community, Nelson, BC at the age of 89.

Jim was born in Nelson on September 9, 1930 to James Herbert (Bert) and Mona (nee Harlow) Donaldson. Tragically Mona passed away of tuberculosis when Jim was just seven years old leaving him and his two sisters to be raised mostly by their grandmother while their father was away working on the sternwheelers, as did his father before him.

In 1954, Jim married Rose Renzie of Procter and they settled in Nelson where their son Phil was born. During his working career, Jim was a miner at the Bluebell Mine in Riondel, then spent many years at Kootenay Forest Products as a mechanic and as Shop Foreman, before going out on his own having a successful business as a mechanic and welder. Later, he was co-owner of the tugboat “Melinda Jane� contracted to push CPR barges to Kaslo, Lardeau and other centres on Kootenay Lake.

In addition to building the family home at Nine Mile, Jim was skilled and methodical with a talent to build or fix just about anything. If he didn’t have a tool or a part that he needed, he would just make it.  In his later years, before the onset of dementia, Jim could be found in his shop crafting beautiful scale models of some nine local sternwheelers and tugboats complete to the most minute detail, now in the collection at Touchstones Nelson.

Selkirk College student relief fund tops $93,000 SUBMITTED

Selkirk College students struggling financially through the COVID-19 pandemic have been wrapped in kindness by the greater community.

In early April, the Selkirk College Foundation started the COVID-19 student relief campaign to raise funds for those students facing emergency financial situations. Donations poured in from community members, retirees, Selkirk College staff, unions, local business and students themselves with an extraordinary $93,235 raised over a four-week period.

“The generosity on display is heartwarming,” says Selkirk College president Angus Graeme. “The crisis we are all facing has brought out the best in people in so many ways, and this is a perfect example. Students who choose to study and train at Selkirk College can clearly see that the community has their back both now and into the future. We are deeply grateful to all who donated to the campaign.”

The aim of the COVID-19 student relief fnd is to provide short-term emergency funds to assist those students who have explored all other government supports and still fall short when it comes to paying for food, rent and school-related technology required to complete studies.

“I was elated and breathless when I received the email, all the stress was immediately lifted,” says the Castlegar resident. “I was falling into a trap of having no income, so having the financial help to fall back on at this particular time was such a huge relief.”

Currie used the funds to buy groceries and pay vital bills that threatened her ability to complete the term. Now planning for her second year of study at the Castlegar campus, Currie forges ahead on an education she hopes will lead to career in social work and counselling. When she reaches her goal, Currie will not forget the kindness of donors.

“Being part of a community is really what matters when something like this happens, it’s appreciated and gives me more strength to pursue my education,” she says. “It warms my heart to be in a community that is so thoughtful, caring and supportive. That people care so much about the individual and the success of the individual, I will carry that into my career wholeheartedly. I can’t wait to help other people.”

Nominations sought for Carver Award for emerging West Kootenay writers SUBMITTED

The Nelson and District Arts Council and Elephant Mountain Literary Festival need help in nominating emerging writers in West Kootenay communities for the seventh annual Carver Award, which comes with a $500 cash prize and presentation at this year’s ELMF festival.

Nominations must be for writers just starting in their careers who have had one to two books published, or an equivalent body of work published in anthologies or literary journals. To meet the criteria writing must be creative, literary writing (fiction or nonfiction). Self-published authors are eligible. Nominees must live in the West Kootenay.

Nominations must include name and contact information for both the nominator and the nominee, writing discipline (fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, teen, children’s, etc), titles of published works and their publishers, and a letter outlining the reason for the nomination.

Richard Carver was a lover of the arts and the Kootenays, and he was invested in the community.

He was a mover and shaker on the board of the Nelson and District Arts Council, the primary sponsor of this award named in his honour.

His daughter Jocelyn Carver has continued the family’s generous support of this award.

After Richard passed away in 2009, the Arts Council founded this award in his honour. In 2019 author Rayya Liebich was the successful recipient. Past recipients have included children’s author Darcee O’Hearn and poet Jane Byers. In 2015 the Elephant Mountain Literary Festival became a partner in the award.
