I

n this, the spring 2020 edition of Indulge magazine, we’ve turned our attention to the great outdoors and all the natural beauty that has been drawing people here – on both a temporary and a more permanent basis – for as long as this community has existed.

Have you ever wondered what White Rock was like 100 years ago? According to local historian Hugh Ellenwood, the city started out as a quiet – and entirely seasonal – seaside resort. More surprising, perhaps, it is one that drew a number of celebrities – mostly professional athletes – to its shore each summer, where they would swim and play tennis and mix among the local inhabitants without making waves.

In the early 1900s, the population of the town would swell from a mere 10 people to between 2,000 and 3,000 as the summer visitors arrived, Ellenwood told reporter Nick Greenizan.

As the year-round population grew, so did people’s homes. Beach-side cottages were knocked down in favour of bigger houses, Ellenwood said, as “people all seemed to be craning their necks to get a better view of the ocean.”

It’s a trend that continues today, as more people move to the area every year, in part, to enjoy its bucolic splendor and mild climate.

Along with them come larger homes and multi-family dwellings – all being constructed at a breakneck pace in an effort to keep up with demand. Ironically, one of the effects of this rapid growth, is the negative effect it is having on

the beauty of the natural environment, as Tracy Holmes found out when she talked to members of the White Rock and Surrey Naturalists.

One byproduct of human habitation, they note, is trash. And it’s a battle they’ve been fighting for years, Holmes learned, as she accompanied them on a shoreline cleanup along the north bank of the Nicomekl River. From styrofoam to tires, furniture and carpeting, club members have hauled away tonnes of garbage over the years.

Of course, this same beauty the Naturalists are working hard to protect has been drawing visitors on day trips to the area for decades. Today – thanks to modern technology – most of them arrive with a camera in hand, enabling them to take a bit of that beauty home with them.

One group that has the inside scoop on the best places to shoot is the Crescent Beach Photography Club. From the banks of the Nicomekl to Finn Slough, club members shared their top spots to shoot – as well as some of their favourite photos – with reporter Aaron Hinks.

Many of those club members, along with countless other local shutterbugs, will no doubt have their lenses pointed skyward on Aug. 12, when the Canadian Forces Snowbirds return to perform their breathtaking aerial acrobatics high above Semiahmoo Bay. This summer’s show is part of a celebration of the Snowbirds’ 50th year of flight and will mark the first local performance by the famous team since 2017.

To understand how White Rock came to have the thriving, vibrant sports community it boasts today, you have to go back to the city’s roots

I

n the early days of White Rock – long before it was incorporated as a city – sports and recreation were a hallmark of the community, especially in the summer months when the population boomed and the waterfront became one of the busiest spots in the region.

On any given sunny day in the early 1920s, you’d find groups of youngsters along the White Rock shoreline, learning to swim under the guidance of instructors from the newlyformed White Rock Amateur Swimming Association.

Older kids, who’d already learned the basics, were farther from the shoreline, taking lessons in the swim tank, which was assembled on the beach every summer after being hauled in – by horse – from the harbour in Blaine, Wash., where it was stored in the off-season.

It was, by all accounts, a bustling athletic scene. In her book, Years of Promise: White Rock 1858-1958 local historian Lorraine Ellenwood wrote that “from 1913 at least, sports days characterized White Rock summers.”

If you continued your stroll from the swimming lessons and moved west along the waterfront you would come across tennis courts, built next to the train station. And there, you might catch a glimpse of hockey legend Fred ‘Cyclone’ Taylor, who in the early ‘20s was wrapping up a long, hall-of-fame career with the Vancouver Millionaires, famously winning a Stanley Cup with the club in 1915.

Taylor’s career had taken him from Ottawa to Manitoba and Vancouver over the course of nearly two decades, but he was also a prominent member of the White Rock community when he wasn’t lacing up his skates in the big city, which was about an hour away by train.

“He was a big part of the swim club and loved to play tennis on those courts,” explained Hugh Ellenwood, archives manager at the White Rock Museum.

Taylor – whose family remained summertime residents of White Rock through the 1930s – wouldn’t be the last professional hockey player to take up residence in White Rock, or become a business owner in the area.

According to Ellenwood, National Hockey Leaguer Mel Hill – who played for the Boston Bruins, New York Americans and Toronto Maple Leafs over a 20-year career – and his wife, Laura, owned the building on Marine Drive that later became the Ocean Beach Hotel.

The couple owned the establishment, which was named the Laura-Mel Hotel, from 1948 until ’50. Mel Hall, who passed away in Saskatchewan in 1996 at the age of 82, wrapped up his hockey career two years later with a senior men’s team in Regina.

In 1942, there is also a record of Lester Patrick – the hall-of-fame player, coach and manager of the New York Rangers – coming to

White Rock to visit family. Patrick – considered one of the most important figures in the history of the game – was a familiar name in West Coast hockey circles, playing for teams such as the Victoria Cougars and Victoria Aristocrats, Seattle Metropolitans and the Spokane Canaries in the first two decades of the 1900s.

Another prominent player of the time, Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender Al Rollins, was also a local resident who, according to Years of Promise, was as ingrained in the local sports community as Taylor had been, and even managed a local softball team during the

summer months.

Ernie ‘Moose’ Johnson, who was inducted in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1952, was another prominent hockey player with ties to the city, as his playing career – which predated the creation of the National Hockey League – took him from the Montreal Wanderers to the New Westminster Royals and, after that, the Portland Rosebuds of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association.

After retiring from a Victoria-based team in 1922, Johnson – who played without two fingers on his right hand due to an electrical-shock accident he suffered as a teen in Montreal – settled in Portland, where he worked as a brakeman for Union Pacific Railroad before eventually retiring to White Rock in the mid 1950s.

He suffered a stroke in 1961 and died two years later, at the age of 77.

Though they held high-profile occupations as professional athletes, they were, by and large, not seen by the community as different from any other resident; celebrity culture had not exactly reached its present-day heights (or depths, depending on your point of view).

“I could be wrong about this, but from my general knowledge, I can guess that they didn’t really have the celebrity status that (pro athletes) might have today,” said Ellenwood.

“It was just a different time. Definitely a guy like Cyclone Taylor was well-known in the community, but that was because he was involved in things like the swimming association… which was so important to people then.”

In fact, some local residents involved in the swim community were likely more revered than Taylor, the hockey star, especially in the eyes of the area’s youngsters.

things were left to the imagination.”

With new year-round residents came, in turn, more winter – or at least indoor – sports.

Bowling had always been a popular activity – a Quonset hut bowling facility existed on 8 Avenue – and soon curling gained steam, too; in 1957, curling sheets were installed in White Rock’s Silver Moon building on Martin Street. The building, which had originally been a dance hall and roller rink, still stands today, but is now an apartment complex.

Eventually, even the popularity of oceanside swimming lessons began to wane once the indoor pool was built in South Surrey, on 17 Avenue.

But with an indoor facility, the popularity of swimming – competitions especially – still grew. Though competitive events were popular in the early part of the century – the Semiahmoo Cup was contested by local relay teams in the ’20s and ’30s – swimming lessons were, back then, less about competition and more about giving youngsters a valuable skill.

In fact, WRASA’s early motto was “Teach a child to swim and save a life.”

“I think that tells you a lot about what their motivations were back then,” said Ellenwood.

As White Rock became a more populous area year-round, it became a more frequent stop for visitors – nefarious and famous alike – thanks to the fact that the White Rock train station was the first Canadian stop heading north from Blaine, and therefore also served as the customs

office.

In fact, Ellenwood’s office in the southeast corner of the building still has bars on the windows, because it once served as the men’s holding cell for the immigration department, he explained.

“My old friend Don Munro died about 10 years ago but he came to White Rock in the ’30s, and he said trains would come across the border with guys riding the rods – the hobos would get underneath the freight cars and just lie on the rods. They’d find these guys at the

border, and hold them here until they could find out if the Americans were looking for them for any reason,” Ellenwood explained.

The station received the odd famous visitor, too, from Jack Benny to Elvis Presley.

“The train would stop and it was a bit of a stretch-your-legs type of situation. Elvis came through because he had two gigs in Canada – one in Vancouver (on Aug. 31, 1957) and one in Toronto,” Ellenwood continued.

“Everyone was hoping he’d get off the train here, but he didn’t. But he did talk to a few people out the window.”

As the city continued to evolve so, too, did its population, and the seasonal cottages – some of which were outdated, in disrepair or simply not suited for winter habitation – were slowly replaced with more year-round accommodations.

In fact, to hear Ellenwood tell it, the evolution of beach-side homes may sound awfully familiar to people paying attention to the modern-day real estate climate in White Rock and elsewhere across the region, proving that – like the Silver Moon or the Ocean Beach Hotel – things may change, but never really disappear.

“A lot would get knocked down and a larger home would get built using the entire lot, as people tried to build as big of a house as they could,” Ellenwood said.

“People all seemed to be craning their necks to get a view of the ocean.”

he Semiahmoo Peninsula is well-known for its waterfronts, walking trails, parks and, of course, its urban forest.

One need not do much more than step outside to become immersed in its natural beauty – although few could argue the point that the simplicity of that quest is becoming more complicated.

The area’s population is growing and new developments, commercial and residential alike, to serve those who live here – and those who want to live here – are being built at what seems an ever-increasing pace.

Many areas once rife with tall conifers, babbling brooks and sundry wildlife are being transformed into multi-family townhome or condominium projects, expansive ‘walkable’ shopping centres and, farther east, block after block after block of industry-focused warehouses.

It can be challenging with such “progress” all around to keep nature in focus; to recognize its importance to the physical and mental wellbeing of the human race and to the creatures that call the forests and waterways home, as well as to all other living things.

White Rock & Surrey Naturalists have been looking after the Semiahmoo Peninsula – and beyond – for nearly 50 years

Keeping that focus has been a goal of the White Rock & Surrey Naturalists since the club formed nearly 50 years ago, in 1973.

Members are “people that feel linked to nature, have that connection,” current club president Liz Walker said.

“It’s people who are advocating for a healthy eco-system and want to be active in that.”

The club has led or assisted countless projects and initiatives over the years, both long- and short-term, and consistent in all of them has been members’ dedication to bettering the environment.

Founder Madelon Schouten (1929–2019) – who also established the Vermilion Forks Field Naturalists – was instrumental in bring the Christmas Bird Count back to the area, contributing to data that helps track the health of North America’s bird populations. She was also key in efforts that led to the realization of Blackie Spit Park in Crescent Beach, Walker added.

(Contributed photo) WRSN include the creation of the Eva Bene Butterfly Garden in White Rock’s Centennial Park and a wildlife/butterfly garden at Campbell Valley Park; the monitoring of off-leash dogs at the Serpentine Fen Wildlife Management Area; hosting the Beecher Place information centre for nearly 20 years; and advocating for the environment through involvement with groups such as the Green Timbers Urban Forest Advisory Committee.

An effort that returned this month to the shores of the Nicomekl River is another prime example of the impact the club has.

Dubbed The Leona Project, it’s focused on removing styrofoam and other debris from the river’s north bank, and is among the WRSN’s more significant endeavours. Spearheaded in 2015 by late board member Leona Breckenridge, it has transformed approximately four kilometres of the shoreline from what was described as reminiscent of the garbage-strewn conditions in Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro, to what the untrained eye today might see as bordering on pristine.

who, while exploring with binoculars from the south bank during a birding walk, asked her about the “white stuff” they could see on the other side of the water.

Turns out, it was styrofoam that had been accumulating on the bank from deteriorating floats and other sources.

It didn’t take long to rally support for tackling it, including from the farmer whose property that side of the bank had to be accessed through.

Home Depot, Friends of Semiahmoo Bay Society, Langley and Delta Naturalists, BC Plant Healthcare Services and WRSN members all pitched in, and in the first round, removed 3,000 lbs of styrofoam over the course of three days that spring. In addition, 71 bags of garbage and numerous large objects were cleared – 10 tonnes of debris in all.

“There was so much to collect,” Walker recalled.

Three cleanup events the following spring removed another 12 tonnes of garbage, styrofoam and deteriorating dock material; six months later, another four tonnes was cleared.

In a report summarizing the first two years’ work, Breckenridge listed items that ultimately filled six 40-yard dumpsters and a big truck: styrofoam blocks, washed-up dock material, creosoted wood, tires, derelict boat parts, furniture, carpeting, luggage, paintings, auto parts, medical supplies, drugs, wire fencing, fishing, boating, swimming and diving gear, cleaning supplies, propane tanks, shoes, 1,000plus toys, thousands of food and beverage items, hundreds of cigar tips and 261 cigarette lighters.

Every little bit helps. I thought, you know, I have time, why not do something good with that? recalled, noting it’s unclear just how far some of the items have travelled before coming to rest on the shoreline.

“Some of it could be coming a long way,” she said.

Items recorded this month also included styrofoam – far less than in previous years, but still a concern as it breaks down and its tiny pieces are mistaken for food by the area’s turtles and other creatures – and tires, as well as shoes, beverage containers and sundry other items.

The ‘citizen-science’ data is all recorded as part a Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, an initiative that strives to reduce the amount of litter and plastic entering Canada’s freshwater and marine waterways.

The Nicomekl effort was renamed The Leona Project following the unexpected deaths of Breckenridge and her husband John in March 2017.

The couple perished at their White Rock home as a result of what a coroner later ruled was carbon-monoxide poisoning.

Walker said she believes the continued headway made by WRSN on the shoreline would meet Breckenridge’s approval.

“I think she’d be pleased with what we’re doing, the progress we’ve made,” she said.

Walker also believes that it would’ve have evolved even further had Breckenridge still been at its helm.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if we were expanding to other areas,” she said, describing Breckenridge as “very focused.”

“Determined describes it, but it doesn’t really describe it fully,” she said.

“I can just see her… ‘Where else can we effect change?’”

Helping draft a resolution calling for legislation prohibiting the use of unencapsulated Expanded Polystyrene (styrofoam) as floatation material in fresh and saltwater was another of Breckenridge’s contributions. Accepted at the 2017 BC Nature annual general meeting, it also went before the Liberal Pacific Caucus, Walker said.

She thinks it would be much closer to having teeth by now if Breckenridge had had her way.

“I think if Leona was still here, there’d be much more action on the resolution. We’d be pressing forward on that with much more vigour,” she said.

Walker is one of around 60 WRSN members, and said for those with a hankering to do some environmental good, there are many opportunities and activities to get involved

with.

Membership for Wim Vesseur, who joined in 2000 after moving from the Netherlands, was “mostly because I love nature… flora and fauna.”

For Betty Hall, who initially joined because she wanted to do more hiking, it’s about concern for the planet.

“It’s mainly about maintaining awareness of what’s going on, what people are doing wrong,” she said. “We try to be aware of the major issues affecting the climate.”

Hall said garbage like that see along the Nicomekl is distressing.

“It upsets me there isn’t more awareness of just how destructive the garbage is,” she said.

Pitching in on the shoreline effort as a guest volunteer, Maria Rogic said her motivation was simple – and it’s a sentiment that would likely be echoed by many, and could easily be applied to other areas of need.

“Every little bit helps,” she said. “I thought, you know, I have time, why not do something good with that?”

It’s snow

ook, up in the sky! It’s a bird. It’s a plane.

Actually, it’s both (kind of). And there are nine of them.

Or, there soon will be, as the Canadian Forces Snowbirds gear up for a return to the skies above White Rock this summer, following a two-year absence.

When the Snowbirds last performed their aerial acrobatics over Semiahmoo Bay in 2017, the exhibition aligned with the city’s Canada 150 celebrations. This year’s appearance, scheduled for Aug. 12, is part of the flight team’s own celebration marking its 50th season.

Based out of CFB Moose Jaw, the “431 Air Demonstration Squadron” of the Canadian Forces, as they’re officially known, briefly had their wings clipped at the end of 2019 following an October mishap in Atlanta, when a pilot was forced to eject during practice. The pilot was not injured, but the performance was subsequently cancelled and the team didn’t return to full operations until early December.

Now back at full throttle, the Snowbirds’ 2020 schedule includes around 30 stops in Canada and the U.S. On average, the team will fly 60 shows in 40 different locations

After a two-year absence, a popular summertime attraction is set to return to the skies above Semiahmoo Bay

A regular attraction at the Abbotsford Air Show, the Snowbirds’ arrival in White Rock routinely draws thousands of people to – or near – the shoreline to watch the thrilling performance as the team of skilled pilots bank, loop, spiral and barrel roll across the sky high above the bay, at speeds that range from 185 km/h to 590 km/h.

Flying in more than 20 different formations, the aircraft are often no more than 1.2 metres (four feet) apart, even while at top speed.

The two solo aircraft, which perform some of the team’s most stunning manoeuvres, aim to be approximately 10 metres apart when they cross.

“With a speed of close to 600 km/hr for each jet, the closure speed of the jets is very close to the speed of sound,” according to the Snowbirds’ website.

A little history: The team got its iconic name in June 1971, from a Grade 6 student named Doug Farmer, who won a contest held at the local base elementary school.

Today, pilots still fly the Canadair CT-114 Tutor, a Canadian-built jet that was used by the forces as a basic pilot-training aircraft form 1963 until 2000.

Normally, the tour of duty for each Snowbird pilot is limited to three years; each year, one third of the pilots change.

This allows the second- and third-year members to train the new first-year pilots, helping to

maintain consistency in their performances.

All for a good cause: In addition to raising awareness about career opportunities in the Royal Canadian Air Force and potentially inspiring a new generation of aviators, the Snowbirds’ performances benefit Canada’s CH.I.L.D. Foundation.

t reportedly took an inventor eight hours to capture the first landscape photograph in 1826 or 1827.

It wasn’t until 1888 that Kodak introduced the first commercially successful film camera. A little more than 100 years later, Kodak introduced the first digital camera.

Film might be dead in mainstream circles today, but the evolution of photography has made capturing a standout photograph increasingly challenging.

Anyone who carries a modern-day cellphone is holding a powerful camera. For people following major cellphone developments over the past five years, it’s been impressive how much technology phone companies have put into their cameras.

Not only are Apple, Samsung and Google advancing innovative software to create a better image, they’re developing multi-lens configurations to give their customers a telephoto lens without a diminishing return on quality.

In the past two years, Peace Arch News photographers have been finalists for two provincial photojournalism awards – both images were taken with a cellphone.

If the trend continues, phone cameras are going to be unimaginably better over the next decade. On Instagram alone, it’s estimated that 95 million photographs are shared daily. While a good portion are likely selfies or ‘food porn’ shots, the numbers give some indication of the unprecedented level of competition budding photographers are up against.

A search for “travel” on Instagram, for example, yields more than 478 million results.

Equipped with the suitable gear and adequate knowledge, most people can take a compelling photograph if they’re on an African safari tour, or standing in front of a cascade of mountains, or peering over the Grand Canyon.

But there’s something to be said about photographers that don’t need to rely on the exotic to capture an image that stops someone in their tracks.

Towering trees, pristine beaches, prairies with rolling hills, mountains in the distance, winding rivers, abundance of wildlife and so much more make the Semiahmoo Peninsula a landscape photographer’s dream.

Few people know of the photographic opportunity on the Peninsula better than Crescent Beach Photography Club members.

President Lynne Kelman told Indulge that each month members of the club are given a theme.

At the end of the month, the club brings in an outside judge to discuss the images.

“We’re always trying to inspire our photographers,” Kelman said. “So inspiration, I think, is the big piece.”

She said the club includes people who are complete beginners to professionals and members often go on photography field trips in the Lower Mainland.

Club discussions also take a dive deep into post-processing.

Indulge asked CBPC members for their favourite place to photograph on the Semiahmoo Peninsula and beyond (See page 21).
