Surrey Hospital Foundation is estimating it’s received about $50,000 in donations since launching its COVID-19 Response Fund late last week.

The foundation created the fund to help purchase equipment for COVID-19 care as well as health and wellness initiatives for frontline workers.

Foundation president and CEO Jane Adams said initially that the foundation was looking at the challenges in the business community and the whole economy as the measures for social distancing were Adams put in place.

“Our initial thought was we shouldn’t be talking to people about making donations because they have to look after their family, their loved ones, their employees, etcetera,” Adams told the Now-Leader on Tuesday.

But as it turned out, the community came to them.

“Then very quickly, after the first cases of people hospitalized within our region, and certainly in our province started to get out in the media, we started to receive a lot of calls from people wanting to do something, and they wanted to do something to support the hospital and particularly frontline workers who are kind of in the eye of the storm,” she said.

The community, Adams said, started to reach out in “fairly large numbers.”

After talking to the foundation’s board, Adams said a fund was created for people to contribute to “with the full knowledge that it will be deployed and used expressly and ex-

“We recognize that our health care workers are a precious resource, but they’re also a finite resource.”

Adams said the foundation is talking to possible donors daily – and it’s not only monetary donations.

“Lots and lots of organizations, who can’t donate cash, are coming forward and they are saying we have an unused commercial building if the health authority needs to have space to see non-COVID patients remotely, or do a remote test site.”

With that, she said, the foundation is working with Fraser Health Authority to keep an inventory of those in-kind donations, such as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and whether the hospitals need it and if it meets health standards.

“Then what they’ll do is deploy those in-kind resources where they’re needed the most.”

Staying warm and toasty is a big thing appreciated by the littlest things.

Adams said Surrey Memorial Hospital is a “really important asset for the province to have in a pandemic.”

“We are so fortunate that 75 per cent of the emergency rooms are individual rooms,” she said. “The majority of our ICU rooms and our step-down rooms are negative pressure which means we can have COVID patients there, they can be vented out in different ways, so the air doesn’t circulate, to reduce cross-contamination.”

Between 2005 and 2011, the community raised funds for SMH’s critical care tower and new emergency department.

“We are so fortunate, and so much of that support for those types of extras, if you like, came from the community,” Adams said.

“We’d like to remind the people that the investments they made six, 10 years ago are helping us in our time of need. It’s not just about what the community is doing now, it’s also what they’ve done in the past.”

2: With social distancing putting public events to a halt and the most susceptible community – seniors – without much of a chance for interaction – Murrayville’s Avalon Gardens Senior Living complex decided to “shake off the isolation blues” with a courtyard concert. The local band Garth and the Guys spread out around Avalon’s central fountain where they blasted live rockabilly tunes for listeners taking in the show from their balconies. Pastor Bob Cottrill was also there to say a prayer for a hopeful future at the end of the show.

What can people do if they feel that others aren’t respecting the province’s – and the world’s – call for social distancing?

That’s the question that’s top of mind for many people as more and more COVID-19 cases emerge in B.C. and beyond.

In the past few days, the Now-Leader has received several emails and calls from people concerned about the public’s lack of social distancing, including a “fullblown” soccer game at a Surrey park, a party in a residential neighbourhood and alleged wedding celebrations at a Surrey business centre and a home.

In a release, Mayor Doug McCallum stated that this latest move is due to a number of “individuals who are willfully ignoring the orders and measures issued by the Provincial Health Officer, such as gathering in large groups both in

public spaces or at home.”

The Now-Leader has asked the city if it will use bylaw officers to enforce social-distancing rules, but had not heard back by press time.

In her briefing in Vancouver on Friday (March 20), provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said, “I would encourage people to use social media to call people out,

to say, ‘This is what we need to do now. We need to keep our germs to ourselves. We need to have small groups. We need to go online.’

“I look at the young people in my life and they spend all their time texting each other and they’re sitting right next to each other anyway. Let’s do that now because the people we’re going to bring it home to are the people that are closest to us, and that may be our grandparents and our parents, that may be somebody in our life whose immune system is compromised.”

Henry declared a provincial health emergency on March 17 as a result of the rising number of cases.

The public health emergency declaration allows for provincial health officer to make verbal mandates, and Health Minister to amend regulations without consent from the B.C. Legislature.

In a statement to the Now-Leader, the Joint Information Centre said that all British Columbians “must abide” by Henry’s orders, otherwise she “can enlist peace officers to enforce them if needed.”

In her briefing on March 19, Henry said the COVID-19 precautions are “not optional.”

“This is not optional, and I want to be very clear that everybody has to take these actions now,” Henry said.

Meantime, the City of Vancouver will now fine businesses if they don’t obey the new COVID-19 rules. City council voted to impose fines of up to $50,000.

“The time of asking nicely is coming to an end,” Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart said.

Meantime, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said more “stringent measures” will come if Canadians ignore the COVID-19 guidelines.

“The duration of this crisis will be determined by the decisions we make right now. If you want things to go back to normal, do your part.

Stay home,” Trudeau said.

But he said the federal government has no immediate plans to use cellphone data to track people’s movements during the crisis.

A video circulating on social media from a nurse claiming to work at Surrey Memorial Hospital was “well intentioned,” but includes some “inaccurate” data and “misinformation,” Fraser Health says.

Earlier in the week, a video that was posted to social media has been making the rounds in Surrey and beyond.

In it, a woman claiming to be a health care worker at Surrey Memorial’s emergency department says workers are “seeing a lot of people walk through these doors with COVID-19 symptoms.” The

While the video has caused some concern for people, the woman in the video did remind people to do their part to help flatten the curve.

“I’m asking everyone who doesn’t have a job that’s deemed as essential to do your part, which is to please, please stay home. If you don’t have to go to work, don’t go to work. Designate one person in your home to go be the grocery-getter, to go run any essential errands that you need,” she said.

“You might not think you’re sick, but there’s lots of people out there who are carrying this and transmitting it to different people, not being symptomatic at all or having their symptoms show up a bit later, and at that point, they’ve spread this illness to people without knowing it and people that are potentially very vulnerable and not able to fight this off themselves.”

She also reminded people to wash their hands frequently, to

lotion afterward so the skin doesn’t break down and to disinfect surfaces, packages and groceries.

“Please do your part, we’re all in this together.”

Meantime, doctors in Fraser Health are calling on Henry to do more.

More than 200 doctors endorsed the letter to Henry, urging her to take further decisive action on COVID-19, such as the closure of all non-essential businesses and heavier use of social distancing.

The letter is signed by Dr. Gerald Da Roza, head of medicine at Royal Columbian Hospital.

“We need to act now to prevent a catastrophic number of preventable deaths,” the letter says. “At our current rate of spread, our hospitals will become overwhelmed within a few weeks… We need to do more.”

Distillery makes free cleaner to help fight COVID-19 virus Aaron Hinks Black Press Media

Due to increased demand and lack of supply, a South Surrey whisky distillery has started giving away free surface cleaner to people in need amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mainland Whisky, which opened last year at #1073425 189th St., saw what their American counterparts were doing and contacted the provincial government to get approval to give away surface cleaner.

Owner Steve Watts said the company was also waiting for provincial approval to start making hand sanitizer. That approval came Sunday, when B.C. Attorney General David Eby announced that, amid “unprecedented times,” all distillers in the province will be able to either create hand sanitizer themselves or donate “excess alcohol” to third parties who will manufacture it for them.

To make the surface cleaner, Watts said “we actually use a dilution of our highproof alcohol that we don’t use in our whisky.

“So we basically dilute it

Watts said they don’t have a supply of bottles, so people asking for free surface cleaner will be required to bring their own bottle.

Watts explained that there are four parts of a distillation run: foreshots, heads, hearts and tails.

“The heads we actually use as a cleaning product ourselves for all of our equipment.”

Watts said they had to close down their tasting lounge due to social distancing requirements of COVID-19, but are

still doing bottle sales.

Producing hand sanitizer – the company’s next goal – is a little more regulated because it touches the skin, he said.

“If you have a high-proof alcohol that touches the skin, yeah, it’ll kill everything on your hands, but it will dry out your hands quite a bit,” he said.

“There’s other ingredients that you should add to moisturize your hands as well. So coconut oil, aloe vera gel. There’s a lot of different distilleries down south doing different things, but we would follow along kind of those guidelines where we would add moisturizer as well.”

Tips for runners

R

eset, don’t retreat.

That’s the advice Curtis Christopherson, president of Surrey-based Innovative Fitness, has for local residents who may find themselves at home a lot more these days, in light of the COVID-19 virus outbreak and recommendations – from quarantines to “social distancing” and working from home – that have followed in recent days.

In an attempt to slow the spread of the virus, sports leagues across the region – including recreational hockey leagues and all BC Soccer-sanctioned programs – have hit pause or cancelled their seasons outright, while many privately-owned fitness centres and all city-run recreation facilities are also closed.

In turn, that means people have to adjust their daily routines, finding new ways to get exercise, and perhaps adapt to new schedules now that they’re dealing with children home from school and new remote-work setups, for example.

“The big thing is that people are going to be cooped up at home, in a potential lock-down or working from home and trying to maintain a certain level of self-isolation… but the big thing we can’t forget is that physical fitness helps boost immune systems,” said Christopherson recently, just a few hours after he announced all Innovative Fitness locations would be closed for at least two weeks.

“And not only from a physical standpoint, but emotionally and mentally, (exercise) is also super helpful. Part of this protocol is to social-distance ourselves, so we’re kind of forced to retreat, so ensuring that we get some kind of physical activity is even more important, to make sure we maintain a certain level of health and well-being. I think it’s something people should prioritize – especially while the weather is good.”

Though people are being encouraged to stay home, there is still – for now at least – the option to get outside and, at the very least, stretch your legs, Christopherson noted.

“Go for a walk or a run – just go out and get some fresh air. Vitamin D is super important for our health, so if you’re working from home, take a break from your desk and go out and get some fresh air,” he said.

There are also plenty of workout plans that don’t require any equipment. Christopherson suggested adapting a “body weight” workout

– many of which can be found online – that includes equipment-free options such as push-ups, crunches, squats and similar activities.

“If you have a gym at home, then that’s awesome. If you have a Peleton or workout videos, then that’s great, too. But if you don’t, that doesn’t mean you can’t do something,” he said. “You don’t need to have the latest technology to stay active and fit. You can actually cycle through a pretty decent workout without gear.”

As well, many gyms and fitness centres have – or are likely planning – to post workout plans and videos online, giving people easyto-follow instructions for home sessions.

While the physical benefits to trying to maintain some level of activity are obvious, the mental aspect is just as important, if not more so, during this unprecedented time of concern, stress and lifestyle adjustments.

“It helps you stay positive, and stimulate endorphins, and it’s stress relief, and helps you sleep better – all that stuff is important to remember,” Christopherson

said. “We can’t just retreat, and a lot of times under stress, that’s what people do.”

Motivation can also be an issue for people when they are, by and large, confined to their homes, but to combat malaise, Christopherson suggested joining fitness-related Facebook groups or perhaps start a group-chat with like-minded friends that may also be trying to stay active.

“Chat with your friends and hold each other accountable during this time,” Christopherson said.

“That also helps because we’re all still going to need some level of social connection, so find ways to connect with people.”

One former Semiahmoo Peninsula resident is doing just that.

Through a message on Instagram, Jordan Mara – a former standout athlete at White Rock Christian Academy and the University of Arizona – invited his friends and social-media followers to join him in a Whatsapp group, where they’d keep each other motivated by participating in a chin-up challenge.

“I think virtual communities

with a challenge emphasis are a really cool concept for a time like this,” said Mara, who now lives in Squamish.

Aside from actual exercise, now could also be a good time to focus on other aspects of your health and well-being, Christopherson said.

If you’re normally an active person but are nursing a nagging injury, take some time to recover.

Or, as a pre-emptive measure to avoid future injuries, he suggests undertaking an improved stretching routine to improve flexibility and mobility.

Now could also be a good time to improve your nutrition and eating habits, especially in light of recommendations that people steer clear of busy restaurants and bars.

“Experiment in the kitchen. People, generally, want to cook their own food right now… so go find healthy recipes and try to make them. Use this time to refine your habits at home,” Christopherson said.

“We’re in this time where we’re being forced to slow down a little bit, so take advantage of it.”

For many people trying to stay fit and active while self-isolating at home during the COVID-19 outbreak, finding a home workout routine that works is relatively straight forward, whether or not you own gym equipment.

It’s a different story for many runners, however – especially those who might be used to getting their cardio workouts indoors, on treadmills or similar equipment at their local gym.

But Olympian and longtime coach Lynn Kanuka has a fairly straightforward solution – just get outside.

“Well, I do Kanuka think it’s fine to be outside. In fact, I think it’s wrong for people to be staying inside (all the time).

We all know that the benefits of getting outside when you can are huge,” she said.

“I’d be the first to suggest that all the gym people should be running outside anyway – at anytime, not just COVID time. We’ve got the beginnings of spring, and I think perhaps the most important thing of all is to stay mentally and spiritually happy, and being outside helps that.

“Shut off your devices, go out and breathe some fresh air.”

She also suggests finding a route with stairs.

“It’s the best thing ever to just go up and down stairs,” said Kanuka, who won bronze in the women’s 3,000-m at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

We all must do our part to help

o let’s do the math.

This is what Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the World Health Organization, had to say on March 23 concerning the COVID-19 threat.

“The pandemic is accelerating.

It took 67 days from the first reported case to reach 100,000 cases, 11 days for the second 100,000 cases and just 4 days for the third 100,000 cases.”

It’s called social distancing, people. Stay six feet, or two metres apart from one another.

Learn it, live it. Do it.

Not later. Now. The director-general of the WHO also remarked that we are not “prisoners” to statistics.

“We’re not helpless bystanders.

We can change the trajectory of this pandemic.”

That is, if each and every one of us takes this threat seriously and does their own part.

Nobody expected this. It’s highly unlikely our politicians sought office thinking they’d be presiding over a pandemic. We sure didn’t expect to be reporting on one.

On the city council front, we hope this crisis will spark an ongoing spirit of collaboration.

We look back at our first editorial of 2020, published on Jan. 1.

“We hope this new year brings with it clarity of communication and a sharper sense of collaboration between our city council members,” our editorial stated.

And yet here we are, in March, in historically trying times – dan-

gerous times – and there’s still an in-crowd and an out-crowd on council.

The city’s newest civic slate, comprised of former Safe City Coalition councillors Brenda Locke and Jack Hundial, issued a press release Monday entitled, “Call for more Communication and more action to protect Surrey Residents.”

As we were going to press for this issue, a special council meeting was reportedly called for Tuesday evening.

All our city leaders must work together in the spirit of public service to help us through this crisis.

Hopefully, what was discussed in this in-camera meeting was a step in the right direction.

They’re even restocking those empty store shelves.

But with the good comes the bad.

These are the people who ignore advice to wash their hands, restrict personal contact and keep a safe distance from others.

They’re also the ones who feel the best defence from this respiratory illness is a garage full of toilet paper.

Hoarding doesn’t help anyone.

It is unnecessary, selfish, and promotes fear.

It didn’t take long for the ethically challenged to figure out how to capitalize on a fearful public.

Fraudsters are using the pandemic to solicit personal information to separate you from your money. A recent example is a text message, purportedly from the Canadian Red Cross, which offers “free” surgical masks in exchange for a steep delivery fee. (The Red Cross says it is not involved.)

But more ugly still is the fear and misinformation being spread, either on purpose or through ignorance. These include suggestions the disease is no worse than the seasonal flu, or that young people can’t get it. Both notions are dangerously false.

There is ample good information out there, and many credible and talented journalists working to get that information to us.

At both the provincial and federal level, health experts are keeping us informed in a transparent and timely way. It is important we listen to these experts and do what they tell us.

Surrey closes skateparks, playgrounds and courts

The City of Surrey has closed playgrounds, skateparks and outdoor courts – but not sports fields, Mayor Doug McCallum announced Monday morning (March 23).

In a release, McCallum stated that this latest move is due to a number of “individuals who are willfully ignoring the orders and measures issued by the Provincial Health Officer, such as gathering in large groups both in public spaces or at home.”

Monday’s closures did not include sports fields.

When asked why fields remained open, City of Surrey spokesperson Oliver Lum pointed to social distancing.

“All City of Surrey playing fields are closed for organized sports,” he wrote in an email to the Now-Leader. “Provincial sport organizations, i.e.

BC Soccer, BC Football, BC Baseball, BC Softball and BC Cricket have suspended all play. Casual use of sports fields and open green space in our parks can take place within the parameters of social distancing.”

On Friday, Surrey’s Gord Sholz told the Now-Leader he was “stunned” when he saw volleyball players sharing water from the same jug during a game break at Newton Athletic Park that week.

Likewise, he couldn’t believe his eyes when “a full-blown soccer game, with referees and everything” was played at the park on March 18.

“They don’t seem to be concerned about it.”

Meanwhile, City of Surrey parks and beaches also remain open, but McCallum reminded residents that proper social distancing measures must be followed.

“To the few who are defying the Provincial Health Officer’s orders, advice and measures, I implore you to stop,” he said.

“We are in the process of finalizing enforcement measures and penalties for those who continue to defy the orders and measures.”

Arenas, culture facilities, museums, public pools, recreation centres and libraries remain closed until further notice.

On March 19, during McCallum’s announcement that the city would be shutting down city-run day camps and daycares, he urged residents to continue to enjoy Surrey’s outdoor spaces, including parks, playgrounds and beaches.

“Get out in the fresh air, but do so by being mindful of social distancing,” McCallum said Thursday. “There are many outdoor spaces you can make use of while keeping social distancing intact.”

Delta closed all playgrounds on Friday but parks remain open. Both Langley City and Langley Township have also closed public playgrounds to help slow the spread of COVID-19 but public parks, trails, tennis courts, sports fields, and sports courts remain open.

Meanwhile, on Monday the Surrey Board of Trade and the South Asian Business Association urged the City of Surrey to immediately declare a local state of emergency amid the COVID-19 Outbreak.

Both organizations are also calling on the federal government to issue a national state of emergency, “providing leadership from the top.”

Add golf courses to the list of recreation facilities closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The two-course Northview Golf & Country Club in Surrey was shut down at 8 p.m. Sunday (March 22), according to a post at northviewgolf.com.

“Unfortunately, we have made the devastating decision to close our entire facility effective Sunday, March 22nd at 8pm,” says a message from Northview general manager Josh Chanasyk. “We do not take this decision lightly, but the safety of our staff, our guests, and our community is our top priority during this difficult time.”

Early Sunday (March 22), Golf Canada CEO Laurence Applebaum asked golfers to stay home during the pandemic, and British Columbia Golf backed the appeal in a letter to Dr. Bonnie Henry, Provincial Health Officer.

“While we do not take this decision lightly whatsoever, we realize that in the best interest of all golfers, their families and their loved ones, staying away from golf facilities in order to do our part to ‘flatten the curve’ is the most responsible and prudent thing to do,” says an online message from Kris Jonasson, CEO of British Columbia Golf.

Elsewhere in the north end of Surrey, Eaglequest Coyote Creek course was due to close at the end of Tuesday (March 24).

Guildford Golf and Country Club remained open, as of Tuesday morning.

On 168th Street, it’s “day to day” operations at Surrey Golf Club, according to a staff member in the pro shop.

A phone message at Birdie & Buckets Family Golf Centre says the facility is temporarily closed.

Dump truck impounded after driver found impaired, police say Surrey RCMP say a dump-truck driver was given a three-day immediate roadside prohibition following a sobriety check in Cloverdale.

On March 13, in the 5900-block of 176A Street, Surrey RCMP pulled over a dump truck for a sobriety check after “observing some concerning driver

behaviour,” according to a release Friday (March 20).

Police say the driver, a 60-year-old Surrey man, was found to be impaired and he was issued a threeday immediate roadside prohibition. The truck was impounded for three days, Surrey RCMP added.

This comes roughly two weeks after a semi-truck

driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition in Fleetwood.

Police added that three weeks ago there was a commercial vehicle enforcement “blitz” where “numerous vehicles deficiencies were identified.”

“Our officers regularly inspect commercial vehicles to ensure that they are

road-worthy and that the drivers are complying with the Motor Vehicle Act,” said Sergeant David Chu. “Impaired drivers are a threat to the safety of every road user and our officers will continue to remove those who choose to put the public at risk on our roads.”

In November 2018, these men set off for a fishing and hunting trip to Haida Gwaii, off of B.C.’s north coast. They left the Lower Mainland in two pickups pulling boats on trailers.

Cameron loved the outdoors, he was part of the paddling community, he hunted, fished, and played hockey. He was a hard-working tradesman who worked throughout northwest BC. He had a brilliant sense of humour, and his generous heart and smile lit up a room when he entered. Cameron was loved and respected by everyone in his life.

In the early morning hours of Sunday, November 18, after passing through Terrace, they were involved in a tragic collision. One of the trucks struck and killed 30-yearold Cameron Kerr, who was walking on the shoulder of the highway.

Instead of reporting the collision, those responsible carried on, taking steps to conceal evidence of the incident.

After the collision, they spent hours hiding their damaged boat trailer in the woods along the highway several kilometres away, and procuring another boat trailer. They transferred the boat to the new trailer and proceeded to Haida Gwaii as if nothing had happened. The persons responsible for his death knowingly left Cameron to die alone, not caring enough to call for help.

Fortunately, through a lot of work and luck, the RCMP were able to track the damaged pickup and apprehend the suspects on Haida Gwaii two days later. They brought all members of the group in for questioning; however, the men responsible for Cameron’s death have chosen to not cooperate with the police. Their trucks, boats and trailers were all impounded by the

With the early success of the search for those responsible, Cameron’s friends and family were hopeful for a quick resolution to the investigation into his death. We waited to hear that Cameron’s killers had come forward to cooperate, or that the RCMP were ready to lay charges.

For more than fifteen months, we have waited for those responsible to listen to their conscience. To have some compassion.

To come forward and give us some closure.

Instead, we are faced with the prospect of never knowing the circumstances of Cameron’s death. Of never knowing who, or how, or why.

When Cameron died, it was hard to believe that someone so vibrant and full of life could be taken so suddenly and senselessly. More than a year later, it is much harder to understand how those responsible could be so callous as not to be affected by Cameron’s tragic death and instead continue to cover it up.

To those who know about this tragedy, think deeply about your own loved ones and feel the pain of this family. They truly deserve better than the silence of those who did this. With no answers, they can only continue to suffer without closure.

If you recognize these men by this story, the family of Cameron Kerr pleads with you to urge them to do the right thing and go to the authorities so that his nightmare can end for Cameron’s family, as well as these individuals.

What was the first concert you ever saw?

“Honeymoon Suite in Kitimat, B.C., as a kid. I was obsessed with all Canadian music like Gowan, Strange Advance, Glass Tiger, Platinum Blonde, Bryan Adams, etc. It was either UK synthpop or Canadian pop for me. Also, it was surreal having such big stars (at the time) come to a town of 14,000, and it blew my mind. I remember not even really understanding the concert experience.

Like, ‘Wait, these people are here in my home town to perform songs of theirs that I love, and they’re live, in front of me? Do we dance or stand in awe?’ I think I was in shock.”

And the most recent one?

“Erasure at the Orpheum on their latest tour. My favourite band since being a kid and they still release incredible pop albums every two years and tour to promote them like clockwork.

Always sold-out. It’s an out-of-body experience that involves goosebumps and tears of happiness. I can’t go with a bunch of friends because I don’t want them all to see me breaking down in ecstatic tears. Only the wife is allowed to see that mess.

The show before that was Goldfrapp, then Depeche Mode – all on their latest tour stops in Vancouver.”

What’s more fun for you these days, making videos or making your own music?

“Well, making music is a solitary artist thing where it’s like painting in brushstrokes that are completely driven by me. Directing is more of a team effort where I create ideas then depend on a team to pull them off with me. Obviously, my career is film so it’s more fulfilling having success there, but as for fun, I think making music is less stressful and an oddly expressive outlet because the entire process

I do write, direct, edit and colour most of my videos, so, lots of control there, but I still need to keep the record labels, musical artists and managers in mind. It’s like directing is steering a battleship and making music is steering a row boat.”

How has making videos changed since you did your very first one, on the day Princess Diana died back in August of 1997?

“This would be a two-hour conversation with you and I in voice.… Because I didn’t go to film school and was thrown into the role of director, it has been a learning curve throughout. Everything was shot on film and there were so many different jobs that were all done by different people in the full process. It’s so strange now that everyone has been forced to be a jack of all trades (and often a master at none haha!). Crews are smaller. People don’t shoot on 35mm film anymore, even though it’s had a ‘vinyl-esque’ resurgence amongst film aficionados.

I shot almost 100 music videos on 35mm film, even when the entire industry had shifted to shooting on digital cameras like Reds. I remember a lot of people in my industry laughing at me for being stuck with film, but I didn’t care. The eco-

nomics of competing with the cost-effectiveness of digital forced me to switch as well. Digital has come a long way but still doesn’t look as good as 35mm film. Now, it’s ‘cool’ again to shoot on film to appear edgy, but what can you do?”

If not your current job, what would you be doing professionally?

“Anything where I would create. I’d be a songwriting musician. I went to school for city planning, initially, so I’m obsessed with urban design and maps. I also love plants and trees, so maybe something to do with the ecology or designing gardens. An architect. Or a chef. Actually, no. I wish there was such a job that entailed bringing good news to people in hospitals or other places. I’d love to be a ‘good news bringer’ the most. I’d do that day and night and smile in my sleep.”

Of all the country artists you’ve worked with, what’s your personal favourite video you’ve made?

“Only if you first tell me who your favourite child is. ;)” What’s the count for the number of video awards you’ve won to date?

“42 (not that anyone is counting).”

You’re the biggest Erasure fan I know. What’s up with

that?

“Hahaha I’m such a big fan that I’ve already brought it up before you asked! I guess it can get summed up with this: In music, melody is king – and nobody can craft a pop melody (and countermelodies) like them.

Nobody in history. And probably nobody in the future ever will. I’m a Gen X’er - cut me some slack.

We have discerning taste in songwriting.”

Ever think of doing a concert playing Breathe of My Leaves music live?

“Yes! I’ve been asked a few times. A few bars around town have also asked me to but I’m just a dude at my computer. I would need a permanent vocalist and I would probably make it like a Broadway musical but with synthpop and dancers/actors doing the strangest things with the strangest outfits. I’d love to do a show where it’s all about humans who land on an alien planet and have adventures, find love with giant metal and crystal alien birds and it turns into some sort of interstellar strip show/over-the-top extravaganza with everyone having weird, glowing genitals and offspring emerging out of heads etc.”

What’s your next video project?

“I have seven music videos lined up into late May, all of which have been pushed and jumbled to different tentative dates (and those keep changing) due to some evil virus monster (that we’re going to defeat soon).

I was scheduled to direct one in L.A. on April 7 but that has been pushed back up to Canada – God knows when. Everyone is in a holding pattern, understandably.

I’ve never seen anything like this in my life. I guess I have some time to dream and create stuff.”

This year, 2020, began as the year of vision. After all, 20/20 vision is perfect.

We touted 2020 as a year of perfect vision. Then the universe changed and the world is facing an invisible foe, a microscopic virus. We can’t see it, but we can detect it. Something so small has effectively closed down our world. The universe has changed.

With amazing technology at our fingertips, we can find out information that will help us reclaim our world, eventually. But can we believe everything we read, especially Facebook and other social media. I was researching a timeline for COVID-19 and found a message from Katherine Maher, executive director of Wikimedia Foundation.

It is a reassuring message, and as we all search for information, Maher’s message is cogent, encouraging, and current. Please read some of her message.

“Throughout these challenging times, knowledge must and will remain open for all,” Maher writes. “We find ourselves in remarkable circumstances this year. The COVID-19 pandemic makes clear our global human interconnectedness and the responsibilities we have to one another. We have no precedent for its challenges, but we do know that our best response relies on the sort of global empathy, cooperation, and community building that sit at the heart of our movement.”

She goes on to thank the thousands of contributors and editors that keep a close watch on keeping misinformation at bay. She concludes with this: “We are proving that, even in a time of social distancing, we can celebrate our human bond

by coming together online to share facts and information.”

For our performing arts community, online communication isn’t always possible, and in our social isolation we can’t go to movies, live theatre or concerts. Libraries are closed, art galleries are closed. Our world is standing still. While we have been assured of continuing food supplies and financial and medical aid, there will still be some fragile businesses that will close. Maybe forever.

The message from Arts Club Theatre Company is loud and clear and deserves a cheer: STAND BY US. These are troubling times, and Arts Club has now closed all theatres, box offices and production venues.

Events and workshops are postponed. Gosh, do you have tickets for cancelled performances? Arts Club promises to be flexible and give you ticket credit of one form or another. They also make a promise to their artists, and to the community. Stand By Us. We will return. This is the new battle cry for 2020. Don’t ask for a refund of your tickets.

Pretend you already saw the show and donate the price of the ticket back to Arts Club.

While such professional theatre companies may be lucky and survive, our community theatre clubs need your support now as well.

Every season, production and event has been either cancelled or postponed indefintely.

Surrey’s Naked Stage Productions has cancelled Murder by Default. These staged play readings have been at Newton Cultural Centre, but the facility is now closed completely. Sometimes, superheroes don’t wear capes. You might find that they have blue jackets and a great smile.

While strolling and shopping in downtown Newton, it’s the things you don’t see that make a difference. The streets are free of litter; shopping carts retrieved; and the neighbourhood looks neat. The community is fortunate to have a oneman dynamo responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the streets within the Newton core.

Five days a week, five hours a day, for five years, Kenneth Green hasn’t missed a day of work.

“Even when we had that flash snowstorm this spring (on a Tuesday), and I forgot to phone him, Kenneth managed still to find 20 pounds of trash on those snowy streets”, Philip Aguirre, of Newton BIA said.

Kenneth, the one-person “Team Tidy” has become an essential part of the community with his little cart.

Janice Huber, community liaison with Avia Employment Services in Newton (now Options), was the one who connected Green and the BIA. It became a perfect fit for the BIA and Kenneth. Executive Director Philip Aguirre walked with Kenneth the first-week orientation, and they became fast friends.

“He’s become a cherished part of the community,” Aguirre said. “If we can beautify our local streets, it instills confidence to the consumers and local store owners that it’s a great place to work and shop.

“A positive economic environment starts with things like Team Tidy,” said Aguirre. “He picks up garbage, reports back on graffiti, and lets us know where the big items are that are in areas that can become eyesores.”

Kenneth has an excellent attitude about the job he’s come to love. “You gotta have a “get up and go” attitude, a sharp eye, and accuracy to do a good job. Five hours goes fast. When I first started with Team Tidy, we’d find 60-70 pounds every day. It’s gotten better, though. Mondays tend to be a little busier, but by Friday, things are looking ‘pretty tidy’ on Newton’s streets.

In the five years that Green’s been out keeping the streets clean, 2,694 bags have been gathered with local litter.

That’s 41,347 lbs of paper cups, straws, food waste, and other trash. He carefully separates the trash into recyclables as he goes and lets the local store owners know precisely where their shopping carts are found. He’s rehomed over 1,077 shopping carts over the years.

Kenneth is also at all the special events that Newton has through the years— Spooktacular in October, Newton Days, and the upcoming “Car Free Day” in downtown Newton in June.

“I like coming up here. I meet a lot of people. It’s a fun place to come. It’s a fun job,” “I’ve found some big items, like flat

Team Tidy works closely with the CSP (Community Safety Patrol) program to report any problem activities seen throughout their day walking the streets.

Team Tidy is an integral part of the BIA’s ‘area enhancement’ pillars, which includes the shopping cart retrieval program, universal graffiti program, and the exciting Mural Laneway, which will creatively highlight the exciting and growing diverse community of Newton.

If you see Kenneth while you’re out and about, don’t forget to smile at him. He’ll likely give you one right back.

Sometimes, superheroes don’t wear capes. You might find that they have blue jackets and a great smile.

While strolling and shopping in downtown Newton, it’s the things you don’t see that make a difference. The streets are free of litter; shopping carts retrieved; and the neighbourhood looks neat. The community is fortunate to have a oneman dynamo responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the streets within the Newton core.

Five days a week, five hours a day, for five years, Kenneth Green hasn’t missed a day of work.

“Even when we had that flash snowstorm this spring (on a Tuesday), and I forgot to phone him, Kenneth managed still to find 20 pounds of trash on those snowy streets”, Philip Aguirre, of Newton BIA said.

Kenneth, the one-person “Team Tidy” has become an essential part of the community with his little cart.

Janice Huber, community liaison with Avia Employment Services in Newton (now Options), was the one who connected Green and the BIA. It became a perfect fit for the BIA and Kenneth. Executive Director Philip Aguirre walked with Kenneth the first-week orientation, and they became fast friends.

“He’s become a cherished part of the community,” Aguirre said. “If we can beautify our local streets, it instills confidence to the consumers and local store owners that it’s a great place to work and shop.

“A positive economic environment starts with things like Team Tidy,” said Aguirre. “He picks up garbage, reports back on graffiti, and lets us know where the big items are that are in areas that can become eyesores.”

Kenneth has an excellent attitude about the job he’s come to love. “You gotta have a “get up and go” attitude, a sharp eye, and accuracy to do a good job. Five hours goes fast. When I first started with Team Tidy, we’d find 60-70 pounds every day. It’s gotten better, though. Mondays tend to be a little busier, but by Friday, things are looking ‘pretty tidy’ on Newton’s streets.

In the five years that Green’s been out keeping the streets clean, 2,694 bags have been gathered with local litter.

That’s 41,347 lbs of paper cups, straws, food waste, and other trash. He carefully separates the trash into recyclables as he goes and lets the local store owners know precisely where their shopping carts are found. He’s rehomed over 1,077 shopping carts over the years.

Kenneth is also at all the special events that Newton has through the years— Spooktacular in October, Newton Days, and the upcoming “Car Free Day” in downtown Newton in June.

screen tv’s and baby strollers, and lots of hubcaps”.

Team Tidy works closely with the CSP (Community Safety Patrol) program to report any problem activities seen throughout their day walking the streets.

Team Tidy is an integral part of the BIA’s ‘area enhancement’ pillars, which includes the shopping cart retrieval program, universal graffiti program, and the exciting Mural Laneway, which will creatively highlight the exciting and growing diverse community of Newton.

For me, the biggest chal-

lenge I have to face is the cancellation of my dance classes and the postponement of the Surrey Festival of Dance. The Surrey Arts Centre is of course closed so the festival, which should take place in April, is postponed until further notice.

I know that people like Arts Council of Surrey president Carol Girardi and Surrey Festival of Dance president James Crosty are keeping current of the situation, and revising plans constantly to keep options open and make the festival happen.

Meanwhile I have promised my dance teacher that I will practice.

Dance teachers, by the way, probably can’t collect E.I., so maybe keep paying your dance fees to

keep your dance studio alive and well. Dance, like community theatre, is a big industry for our city and now is the time to follow the slogan STAND BY US. We all must make drastic changes in our lifestyle.

Yes, I miss my dance friends terribly, and emails and phone calls are a small lifeline. I do understand why these drastic measures have to be done. What I don’t understand is why people are hoarding toilet paper. Seriously. Oh well, I guess the universe hasn’t changed all that much.

Stay safe, keep dancing and sing from your balconies. Find your new normal. Stay tuned for a return of the arts, and Stand By Us. But for now, just don’t stand too close.

Academy club sets up six new courts

In recent years David Carrasco has seen quite a spike in youth volleyball participation, and he’s hoping to give those numbers even more of a bump with the new facility he’s built in Surrey.

Academy Volleyball was recently opened in 18,000 square feet of business park space on 52nd Avenue, in the southeast corner of Cloverdale, after three years of planning.

The six-court facility includes a custom blue playing surface imported from Italy at a cost of $200,000, according to Carrasco.

“It’s the same type they use at the Olympics, with a couple of layers of foam under it, and it’s really good to prevent concussions and elbow injuries,” he said.

“Those are carbon-fibre poles that can be easily moved around,” Carrasco added.

“Some of the school poles are 70 pounds, really heavy, and these are really light. These are the lightest poles you can get.”

Following delays in getting permits and final inspection, Academy opened just as the COVID-19 pandemic became a real concern.

“I’m super happy it’s up and running now, but it’s been a bit of a slower start than we wanted,” Carrasco said. “It is a bit of bad timing with that, but we’re starting some programs we couldn’t do before.”

“That has been a passion of mine, to allow all kids to play if they want,” Carrasco said. “It’s painful, and I got an email in

Volleyball is one sport where not everyone can just go play anywhere.”

A South Surrey resident, Carrasco grew up in Winnipeg and got involved in coaching at the University of Manitoba from 2007 to 2012. That’s where he met his wife, volleyball player Lauren O’Reilly, who went on to play on the national team and pro in the Netherlands. The couple eventually settled in her native Langley to start a family.

“I’ve coached at all levels,” Carrasco said, “but coaching youth is what I love. My father taught martial arts for 35 years, and I kind of followed that

path of working with youth. I just love working with kids and helping them grow as athletes, and particularly with girls volleyball there’s such an opportunity for them to get their education paid for down the line.”

Carrsaco said the first volleyball camp he ran locally, in 2012, attracted just four kids to a rented gym in Abbotsford.

Slowly, he built Academy from there, by word of mouth and also an Instagram account that now boasts 15,000 followers.

“The biggest struggle for all the clubs is facilities, right,” he said. “So many people are moving here and they’re putting portables on school property, and they still have just the one gym, and they need more. So everyone is trying to rent, and

it’s a real crunch. A couple of years ago I wanted to expand programs but couldn’t because there was just no space. That’s when we decided to build this.

“It’s a great location because of the zoning, with lots of parking,” he continued. “It’d be cheaper for me to go to Port Kells or Newton, but this is better. We’re just off Highway 10, the new hospital will be built right over there, lots more happening around here.”

Today he and Lauren, a teacher at White Rock Christian Academy, have three kids, with a fourth on the way.

“They’re just getting started playing volleyball, but they’re pretty young still. They’ll be bouncing around here soon enough.”

“They’re a really tough bunch. They have a lot of belief in themselves and in each other. I think we really needed that to get through all those big-pressure situations.”

In the championship game against Humber, the Dooley-coached side cruised to the win, not only winning in three straight but also never

allowing the Ontario team to reach 20 points in a given set.

Prior to lining up against Capilano, Humber College was undefeated, and had not even dropped a set since November, Dooley noted.

“I don’t think a lot of people expected us to win, and definitely didn’t expect us to win in such a lopsided fashion,” he said.

“We’re all obviously pretty pumped.”

March 14 was also a special day on a personal level for Dooley, who had his late brother Patrick on his mind.

Patrick, who was a golfer and volleyball player at Elgin Park Secondary, died in 2008, at age 16, from viral encepthalitis, an acute inflammation of the brain.

“His birthday is March 14,” Dave said. “We won it on his birthday.”
