any South Cariboo residents, seasonal residents and tourists live or stay outside of 100 Mile House but rely on the small town for shopping, work, eating out and activities. It’s big enough to have everything you might need but small enough to have a homey feel. This means that along Birch Avenue, the main shopping street, you’ll find lots of unique little specialty stores. Alongside Highway 97, which runs through town, you’ll find more familiar options. Whether you’re not sure what to do or have your plans all figured out, the South Cariboo Visitor Centre is well worth a stop as it is home to the original B.C. Express Stage Coach No. 14, the only surviving coach of the Barnard Express and Stage Line as well as the world’s largest skis. A walk around the marsh right
by the Visitor Centre is also an excellent way to stretch your legs and look for birds. The Parkside Art Gallery, Martin Exeter Hall and the South Cariboo Rec Centre are among the top recommendations for entertainment and activities, though far from the only options. Right beside the gallery, you’ll find the entrance to Centennial Park, which is excellent for a picnic, small kids and summer entertainment with waterfalls and a waterpark within walking distance. Come and find what you’re looking for and visit 100 Mile House.

1. SOUTH CARIBOO VISITOR CENTRE Not only a great place to stop and get more information about the area, at the Visitor Centre you’ll also find some of the largest skis you’ve ever seen and an original stage coach.
2. SOUTH CARIBOO REC CENTRE The Rec Centre is

a popular place for sports with an ice hockey arena, curling rink and indoor arena. Outside, you’ll find baseball fields and the outriders area. All kinds of events take place at the facility.
3. 99 MILE HILL The 99 Mile Hill is another popular sports destination. With plenty of trails and home to a few clubs, it is a great place for cross country skiing, snowmobiling, mountain biking and more.

4. CARIBOO MALL The Cariboo Mall is one of the main shopping locations in the area featuring a number of stores including grocery options.

5. BIRCH AVENUE The downtown street is the main shopping location in 100 Mile House with plenty of mom and pop stores offering unique products and services.
6. COACH HOUSE SQUARE There are plenty of shopping opportunities along Highway 97 with the Coach House Square being a main feature with grocery and other stores.
7. CAMPING AND SKATEBOARDING Just off of Horse Lake Road, you’ll find a popular local skateboard park right beside the 100 Mile House Campground.
8. CENTENNIAL PARK The park is somewhat hidden with the entrance right beside the Parkside Art Gallery. The park sports a playground, water park, creek, waterfalls and is a great place for a picnic.
9. PARKSIDE ART GALLERY The Parkside Art Gallery is the biggest gallery in 100 Mile taking submissions from local artists. On any given day, you’ll find a mix of local art, including some available for purchase.
10. SOCCER FIELDS At the very back of 100 Mile House you’ll find the soccer fields which are plenty busy when the snow’s not around. 11. MARTIN EXETER HALL While you’ll find some performances at local churches and other venues, Martin Exeter Hall is the biggest entertainment venue in town. Throughout the year, it hosts plays, choirs and visiting musicians.

SOUTH SIDE
f you travel south from 100 Mile House along Highway 97 you’ll visit 70 Mile House, Green Lake, Watch Lake and Clinton. The area offers exactly what you’d expect in the South Cariboo: stunning lakes, gold rush history and more. You’ll pass the Mt. Begbie Lookout which is a brief hike up after turning off the highway. On clear days, the lookout offers far-reaching views. In 70 Mile, Green Lake and Watch Lake you’ll find plenty of camping options, trail rides, retreats and resorts as well as a few dining options. The stunningly coloured Green Lake is a particularly popular swimming destination, as well as for other water activities. The area is home to Green Lake Provincial Park and, a bit further north on the opposite side of the highway, you’ll find Flat Lakes Provincial Park.

Clinton is deeply steeped in history, with a museum downtown as well as some unique specialty stores, dining opportunities and fine accommodation. Among its biggest claims to fame are the Clinton Annual Ball and May Ball Rodeo. Within driving distance, you’ll find the beautiful Marble Range, Downing Provincial Park, Big Bar Lake Provincial Park and Edge Hills Provincial Park (no motorized access). If you’re looking to stay closer to the main roads, the Chasm Provincial Park is well worth a stop as it can offer some beautiful colour. The area offers exactly what you’d expect to see on a postcard.

eading east from 100 Mile House, along Highway 24 and Horse Lake Road, you’ll find Horse Lake, Lone Butte and the Interlakes area. Famously dubbed the Fishing Highway, the area is dotted with lakes. Lone Butte is a historic railway stop and was the highest elevation on the

Butte is named after, which is a short but rather steep hike up. It offers an excellent view of Lone Butte and the surrounding area. North of Lone Butte, you’ll find Horse Lake which is home to a few accommodation options. Interlakes, on Highway 24 is, without a doubt, one of the South Cariboo’s most underappreciated gems. The area is absolutely perfect for a fishing, kayaking or canoeing getaway and many of the lakes are stocked annually. Some of the biggest lakes include Sheridan Lake, Bridge Lake and Deka Lake but many of the other smaller lakes such as Sulphurous, Hathaway and Roe Lake are well worth a visit. The area is home to Bridge Lake Provincial Park and Rainbow/Q’iwentem Provincial Park. There are plenty of resorts and guest ranches to stay at in the area. Another top recommendation for the Interlakes area are the ice caves where caves and crevices keep a year-round ice supply. With curvy roads and stunning views, Highway 24 is well worth the drive, even for someone just passing through.

eaving 100 Mile going north, you have two options. You can stay on Highway 97 passing 103 Mile House, 105 Mile House, 108 Mile Ranch and Lac la Hache. The area has plenty of resorts and guest ranches where you can enjoy anything from trail rides to golf as well as a few excellent dining opportunities. Among the top recommendations is

undoubtedly the 108 Heritage Site, featuring an array of historic buildings and artifacts from the Cariboo gold rush. The site also plays host to plenty of events and a ghost hunt. The Mt. Timothy Ski area is certainly another top destination, especially in winter. Lac la Hache itself is excellent for water sports, including fishing and has a small provincial park.

some substantial recent upgrades. The area has some of the best waterfalls in the South Cariboo in the form of the Canim and Mahood Falls, which are fairly easily accessible for all ages. Whether you’re looking for action or peace and quiet, the area has plenty of both.

If you’re looking to get off the highway, you can turn onto CanimHendrix Lake Road just north of 100 Mile House instead, leading you to Forest Grove, Canim Lake and the Tsq’escenemc Canim Lake Band. here are plenty of ways to explore the Cariboo on foot. We’ve pulled together some of our top recommendations.
BRIDGE CREEK FALLS For those looking to take a quick walk, there’s a trail on the south side of Centennial Park near the parking lot that leads to the Bridge Creek Falls. The falls are undoubtedly among the most accessible in the South Cariboo and should be doable for most people including small children. There are no rails or fences, however, so it’s best to keep a close eye.

The Canim and Mahood Falls are perhaps a bit more off the beaten path than most of the options on this list but the walk is highly recommended. It’s a nice trail and the falls are among the best, if not the best, in the South Cariboo. There’s not much of an incline on the trail but unlike most of the options listed here, a bear bell wouldn’t go amiss.
MOUNT BEGBIE LOOKOUT Between 70 Mile House and 100 Mile House, you’ll find the Mount Begbie Lookout. The lookout is open to the public with some washrooms located at the bottom. There are no other spots in the South Cariboo where you can look as far as from the top of the lookout. The trail itself switchbacks up and while relatively short is still a decent workout. For those into photography, a telephoto lens wouldn’t go amiss when you’re on top.
100 MILE MARSH By far the tamest of the options here, the 100 Mile marsh is popular with bird enthusiasts, seniors or just to stretch your legs. With it being right beside the South Cariboo Visitor Centre in 100 Mile House, it’s also a good place to ask for more hiking options if you’ve not yet quite found what you’re looking for.

he South Cariboo is home to an abundance of provincial parks, enough to spend the better part of a lifetime really. Here are some of the most popular choices in the area.

GREEN LAKE PROVINCIAL PARK
LAC LA HACHE PROVINCIAL PARK
Certainly not the largest park in the South Cariboo, the park and surrounding accommodation options are extremely popular because of Green Lake itself. The lake is among the best swimming holes with fairly shallow and warm water that have a brilliant green hue.
Lac la Hache Provincial Park’s popularity also stems from being on a lake which, like Green Lake can be used for swimming, though generally, Lac la Hache is more popular for fishing, power boating and water-skiing. There are rental and accommodation options in the area.
BRIDGE LAKE PROVINCIAL PARK The Interlakes area is probably more popular for its resorts than provincial parks but that doesn’t mean you should overlook Bridge Lake Provincial Park. If you ask around you may be told it’s quite small, as it started at only 11 hectares, but now spans over 400 hectares protecting much of the undeveloped shoreline and islands. It can be a good spot to see bald eagles, beavers and other wildlife. Like many South Cariboo lakes, it’s a popular fishing destination.
WELLS GRAY PROVINCIAL PARK You can find multiple provincial parks in the Forest Grove and Canim Lake area including Schoolhouse Provincial Park and Ruth Lake Provincial Park, but Wells Gray is undoubtedly the most recognizable. Even though only a small part reaches out into the area, it’s stunning with easily accessible waterfalls. Want more information on these or other local provincial parks? or those who know where to look, the South Cariboo has some things you won’t find anywhere else. They’re not exactly well-kept secrets, but you’re somewhat likely to miss them nonetheless. If you’re driving up from the South, you’ll pass Chasm. The Painted Chasm is a canyon carved out the end of the last ice age. The now exposed rock is built out of lava flows in stunning horizontal layers. Further to the north, you’ll find something else you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else. Along Highway 24 there’s a set of ice caves near Bridge Lake. They’re sheltered from the sun and wind. Throughout the winter snow and ice will melt and refreeze which creates a year-round supply of ice. The trails are built with safety and mobility in mind. For those who are feeling adventurous, just southeast of 100 Mile House in Lone Butte, you can actually climb up the Butte, which is a volcanic plug. It’s popular with locals and teens. It’s a very short walk and climb but not for the faint of heart. The view is well worth it but the ascent and descent are quite steep. If you’re unsure of your abilities, you might want to start with one of the slightly easier trails and work your way up to it. For everyone else, it’s absolutely worth the brief stop. There are 17 murals painted in 100 Mile. Some are easy to spot but others involve locals or visitors to get out and walk. Further south in Clinton, you’ll find the Clinton Art Gallery, another non-profit with about 32 members. In addition to checking out the art there, you can take classes and workshops and attend events. hen it comes to entertainment, there’s always something bound to be happening, whether it’s plays, concerts, festivals or family fun.

After a new stage was built in Centennial Park in 2018, 100 Mile House had it’s first free summer music series in 2019. After seeing how popular it was, you can expect to see Parks Alive back this year. You’ll find similar regular live music in the Interlakes area where musicians visit for Music at the Lakes in Sheridan Lake. There are a couple of local groups you’ll see repeatedly when you’re out and about such as the Eclectica Community Choir. Their biggest events include a Christmas concert in early December and a Spring concert in early May. “Research shows singing is helpful physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually,” said musical director, Barbara Hooper. The 100 Mile House Community band is another mainstay with plenty of smaller bands in the area as well. If the theatre is your thing, you’ll want to check out the 100 Mile Performing Arts Society. They’re a volunteer-run, community-based organization that offers family entertainment to the community while providing adults and youth an opportunity to perform in local productions. Outside of the schools, long term residents will also be familiar with groups such as Barkerville’s Theatre Royal and the Missoula Children’s Theatre coming to perform somewhat regularly. If you want a more intimate experience, you’ll find some of the local restaurants and pubs host performers. Finally, if you prefer a more informative flavour of entertainment, the South Cariboo frequently sees guest speakers visit on a host of topics. The most frequent organizer is probably the Age-Friendly Society of the South Cariboo but you’ll find other groups also welcome speakers 25 — from time to time.

he South Cariboo has a long and cultured history and takes its name from the once abundant caribou herds. First Nations have called the area home for thousands of years. The entire area falls within unceded Secwepemc territory which is bordered by Tsilhqot’in territory to the west and north. Nearest to 100 Mile House is Tsq’escenemc or Canim Lake Band.
CULTURE AND HISTORY
Other nearby Secwepemc First Nations include Stswecem’c Xgat’tem (Canoe Creek/Dog Creek), Pellt’iq’t (Whispering Pines/Clinton), Llenlleney’ten (High Bar), Bonaparte Indian Band and Esk’etemc (Alkali Lake). South Cariboo First Nations were known to be seasonal, living in tipis and lean-tos during more moderate summers and using underground kekuli villages during the winter. Some sites contain the remains of over 100 kekuli, indicating a large potential population. A reconstruction of a kekuli can be seen by the public near the Lillooet Tribal Council’s offices near the reserve community of T’t’ikt in Lillooet, B.C. Annual events include National Indigenous Peoples Day and a Pow-wow. Many of local First Nations’ cultural traditions have seen a bit of a resurgence in recent years with activities such as drum making, beading, games, ethnobotany, dream catcher making, crafts, baby cradles and cedar baskets seeing a growth in popularity, as well as hunting, fishing and trapping. Foods such as bannock and pemmican can still be enjoyed, as well as games such as Lahal. The Pow-wow is usually accompanied by traditional drumming and dancing by band members sharing fancy shawl, traditional and jingle regalia.

The area experienced a boom of settlers during the Cariboo Gold Rush. For First Nations that meant new trade, sickness, violence and colonization. Later many local First Nations suffered in the Residential School system. For miners and others travelling north, roadhouses were established along the Old Cariboo Road, often marked by their distance along the road from Lillooet which is where 100 Mile House, originally named Bridge Creek House, gets its name from. For history buffs, much of the pioneer history is still readily available. Starting at Hat Creek Ranch, you’ll be able to go

back in time and see buildings built as early as 1860. In Clinton, you’ll find the Clinton Museum with all kinds of period items. If you’re looking for a bit of history to take home, you might even be able to find a store in the small town that sells what you’re looking for. Though many of the historic buildings have been lost to fire over the years,

you’ll still find some roadhouses along the way north. In 100 Mile House, you’ll be able to find the only surviving stagecoach of the original B.C. Express and Stage Line. It travelled between Ashcroft and Prince George as late as 1917. Just north of 100 Mile House, you’ll find the 108 Heritage Site. Many of the
area buildings from the 1800s on were moved to the site where they are open to the public. The site is well worth a visit and frequently hosts markets and other community events. Further along Highway 97 still, you’ll find the old Felker Homestead in Lac la Hache. The site is primarily visited during the annual Garlic Festival.
Great Eastern Railway reached Lone Butte just over one hundred years ago. The water tower, which turns 100 years old this year, was built shortly after wto supply steam engines. The arrival of the railroad changed Lone Butte from a construction camp into a small town. The water tower location is now a popular rest stop and park host
and is the home of some annual events. A caboose was added in recent years as well.

The South Cariboo also has a long logging history with old remnants scattered across the area, such as at Bridge Creek Falls. There’s a bit of a collection at the 108 Heritage Site for those wanting to have a closer look at some of the items. Last but not least, there’s the historic railway stop in Lone Butte. The Pacific

he South Cariboo is the gateway to mountain biking in the CaribooChilcotin region. Riders can find trails along Highway 97 in Clinton, 100 Mile House and 108 Mile Ranch. Whether it’s a relaxing ride to take in the scenery or one to test your limits, there are trails for the novice and advanced rider. “Mountain biking in this area is quite diverse and it offers a lot of different experiences,” said Craig Davidiuk, Huncity Mountain Bike Club spokesperson. “It is suitable for people who may be new to the sport or enjoy easy riding.”

The Huncity Mountain Bike Club is the South Cariboo’s heart and soul of mountain biking. The club is a registered non-profit society that works with provincial and local governments for the advocacy, creation and maintenance of trails in the South Cariboo. Weekly club rides take place on Wednesdays and they meet in the parking lot at 4690 Telqua Dr, 108 Mile Ranch. Everyone is welcome. Some of the best riding experiences can be enjoyed at the 99 Mile Hill, just south of 100 Mile.
In the last year, two new trails have been designed by professional builders for intermediate and advanced riders. The trails feature berms, bumps and woodwork. “There are a lot of disciplines in mountain biking, like freeriding which you can find elsewhere, but we have a cross-country style network of trails in the South Cariboo,” said Davidiuk. The 108 Mile Ranch offers a network of trails featuring rides that roll over cattle trails with options to connect with beginner, intermediate and advanced single-track trails.

f you are someone who seeks the adrenaline rush of extreme sports, check out the South Cariboo’s motocross track. The South Cariboo Track and Trail Dirt Bike Association have restored motocross in 100 Mile House and it’s rapidly becoming a destination favourite.
“We wanted to give families and kids a place where they can enjoy a pastime, in a closed setting,” said association president, Brandon Plewes. “People who visit the South Cariboo and bring their dirtbikes now have a place where they can ride as a family.” Geared towards family fun, the motocross track is easy and safe to ride. Visitors looking to ride can purchase day and weekend passes to the
motocross track. A single-rider day pass is $15 or $20 for the weekend. Day passes for families are $30 or $40 for the weekend. “There is a great line of sight to the track, so parents who aren’t riding can see your kids or family members ride 90 per cent of the track,” said Plewes. “It’s a track for everybody.”

hen it comes to fishing in the South Cariboo, the opportunities are almost endless. There are hundreds of lakes to choose from which makes this part of the region a spectacular place to fish. When you ask a local, they’ll tell you the Interlakes area is one of the best destinations for fishing. Interlakes stretches along Highway 24 and includes Fawn Lake, Sheridan Lake and Bridge Lake. “Fishing on Highway 24 in the South Cariboo is phenomenal,” said Mark Roseboom, owner of Lone Butte Sporting Goods. “You can target different species
and lakes.” The South Cariboo is most commonly known for rainbow trout, lake trout and brook trout but kokanee and burbot can also be found swimming in the water. Lac la Hache has a reputation for kokanee, lake trout and rainbow trout. In Lac la Hache, the best fishing is recommended out on the lake. There are boat launches at the north end of the lake. “The South Cariboo is one of those areas you can go fishing and not be disturbed by other people on the lake,” said Roseboom. Located on the edge of the South Cariboo is Canim Lake, which is best known for its sizable lake trout but rainbow trout are abundant too. “The thing about the Cariboo is that there isn’t just one good spot, there are a whole bunch of really good spots.” Smaller lakes in the area are the best to visit by a canoe or kayak and the larger lakes by a personal watercraft or powerboat.

ith hundreds of lakes to discover in the South Cariboo, it’s nearly impossible to not experience it for yourself. Whether you’re looking for a spot to go boating, swim or catch some sun, there is a lake

colours during the summer. The lake features several parks and is recommended by locals as one of the best for boating and water sports. Green Lake is also excellent for swimming and its sandy beaches that dot the irregular shortline in five spots. Travel along CanimHendrix Road to the Northeast of 100 Mile House and you’ll find Ruth Lake. This lake is smaller and is a favourite for local swimmers because of its warm water and maintained park space. Unless you’re swimming in a known swimming spot, like at a resort or park, you’re best swimming off of a dock or boat.
If canoeing or kayaking is your thing, most resorts and campgrounds offer rentals by the hour or day. While you can do so on just about any lake, you might find some of the smaller lakes the preferred option. The South Cariboo is also a great place to go powerboating whether you just want to go really fast or are looking to tube, wakeboard or waterski. The larger lakes in the South Cariboo, such as Lac la Hache, Canim Lake and Green Lake would be the top recommendation here simply because they have plenty of space. Some of the smaller lakes also have speed restrictions in place.

ith a lively local archery club, the South Cariboo is a destination archers come to visit, offering year-round shoots with an indoor arena and outdoor course. “Archery is a great family support that allows everyone to compete at their own level of competency,” said President of Big Horn Archery Club, Allen Pickering. Two of the largest archery shoots include the anticipated 3D indoor shoot that takes place in March at the Stan Halcro Arena in 100 Mile House. In July, the club takes the 3D shoot outside and into the forest at the 99 Mile Snowmobile Club. “We design the shoots so it is enjoyable to everybody,” said Pickering. “Anybody can come to the South Cariboo and participate in the sport of Archery.”

What’s a trip to the South Cariboo without at least getting your boots dusty at one rodeo? Each and every rodeo in the South Cariboo reflects the spirit of those communities and often offers its own special twist to the traditional rodeo format. The Little Britches Rodeo in 100 Mile House is known for kicking off the season in the South Cariboo. This is a rodeo for young cowboys and cowgirls who are just getting started in the sport. Little Britches is a family-oriented event and one for the whole family to enjoy. For visitors seeking edge-of-yourseat action, some of the best bullriding can be seen at the Clinton May Ball Rodeo, the Interlakes Rodeo or the anticipated Bridge Lake Stampede. The Clinton rodeo takes place on the last weekend in May. Athletes from around the province take part in all the traditional events such as bull riding, steer wrestling and barrel racing, among others. The Clinton rodeo is known for its intermission entertainment with events like the cowboy foot race. Visitors can camp out at the rodeo grounds or find accommodations in town and ride the shuttle bus to
and from the rodeo. The Bridge Lake Stampede has been a staple to the South Cariboo for more than 70 years. Taking place in June, horses and their riders compete in several disciplines such as bareback riding, saddle bronc, bull riding, barrel racing and more. The Interlakes Rodeo takes place on the first weekend in August at the Interlakes Rodeo Grounds. It is a BC Rodeo Association rodeo that draws in amateurs and juniors to compete in all of the traditional rodeo disciplines like bareback, bull riding, team roping, steer wrestling and more. The two-day event offers plenty of in-the-arena entertainment, food vendors and western wear shops. If you’ve never seen a wild horse race before, we recommend experiencing it for yourself.

he 100 Mile House Wranglers are a big deal in the South Cariboo community. On almost every night they play at the local arena, the stands are filled with fans. This year, the Wranglers will host the coveted Cyclone Taylor Cup - the trophy for the best Junior B hockey teams in the province.

Playing in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, arguably one of the best Junior B leagues in the country, the Wranglers tend to play fast and hard and have yet to miss out on the playoffs since moving here in 2013 from Penticton. The franchise was born in 2001 as the Summerland Sting and had eight seasons, making the playoffs six of those times. However, at the end of the 2008-09 season, the Sting relocated to Penticton and rebranded as the Lakers. Due to arena difficulties and unable to compete with the local Junior A (Penticton Vees) team for attendance, the Lakers would move to 100 Mile House and become the Wranglers just after three seasons. Since coming to the South Cariboo Rec. Centre in 2013, the Wranglers have become a successful franchise and have done something their predecessors have not. Win silverware. Since the conclusion of the 2015-16 season, banners for the KIJHL, Cyclone Taylor Cup and the Keystone Cup have been hanging from the arena’s rafters. Home games are played at the South Cariboo Rec Centre, which is just off Highway 97. Tickets are $10.50 for adults and $8.50 for students/ seniors. Children under six get in for free. With 49 regular-season games from September to mid-February, it makes for an exciting and affordable night to catch a game of hockey while visiting 100 Mile House.

“The 100 Mile Nordics is one of the oldest and most active sports clubs in the Cariboo. Our high-quality trails, tight-knit community and lodge help separate us from other Nordic ski offerings,” said Craig Davidiuk, the spokesperson for the club. “It’s the perfect place to try Nordic snowshoeing or to meet new people”. Several trails are available in the area, including the 99 Mile Trail system
operated by the 100 Mile House Nordics Club. The Nordics Club used to be the biggest of its kind in B.C., hosting several cross country skiing races in its heyday. Nestled into the 99 Mile Trails, the club offers many programs and events open to visitors, including a Family Day celebration, Nordic High Tea, and others. The trails are 45 kilometres in length, with 2.5 of that being lit. The Nordics also went through a year of upgrades of renovations and upgrades, including the aforementioned 2.5 kilometres of lit trail, which have

kept the trails bright a lot this winter. The kitchen in the lodge was also vastly improved. In 2019, the club also won a contest for the biggest gain of membership of any club in B.C., with just over 200 people. For those who can’t ski, there are also snowshoe trails. An adventure park is also available for younger kids to explore. A day pass is $15, while a day pass for a family of three or more is $30. Several other trails, such as the Gold Rush Trail, mostly used for snowmobiling, also allow snowshoeing and skiing.

urling is a staple in northern communities across Canada. It’s no different here in the South Cariboo.
The 100 Mile House Curling Rink is home to two clubs, the 100 Mile House Curling Club and the Lac la Hache Curling Club. The Lac la Hache Club runs a league throughout the winter months at the rink in 100 Mile, as well as a ‘Fun Spiel.’ The bonspiel is usually played on one day in March, where participants play three games and get dinner. It’s an all-ages tournament and teams can win money depending on what place they come in. The 2020 Fun Spiel is on March 14. The 100 Mile House Curling Club is a bit bigger and a bit busier. They run various leagues; drop-in, mixed, men’s, ladies, seniors, doubles and juniors. “Curling is known as one of the most
welcoming sports. The 100 Mile House Curling Club welcomes all out-of-town teams to our annual men’s, ladies’, mixed and open doubles bonspiels. They are competitive, challenging, crazy-fun, with great food, cash prizes and jackets for winning teams. You will feel part of our club the minute you walk in the door,” said Maria Hamilton, treasurer and spokesperson for the club. They also host four bonspiels, including the mixed doubles, which debuts this year (Feb. 21 to 23). The other three are the men’s, mixed, and ladies’. Every bonspiel runs for an entire weekend,

starting Friday evening. They also include dinner (Saturday) and appetizers (Friday) and provide ample time for curlers to socialize. The Ladies Bonspiel (March 6 to 8) takes it a step further, including a dance and a theme for the weekend, which includes the women dressing up. This year, the theme is disco. While it costs money to register teams for the bonspiels, teams win money for every won game and receive prizes for winning the three sheets. Door prizes are also given out, as well as draws. HITTING THE SLOPES IN THE CARIBOO Skiing has always been a popular recreational activity in the South Cariboo. The old hill near 100 Mile is long closed, but now the South Cariboo is home to Lac la Hache’s Mount Timothy Recreation Resort.
After a couple of years of being in limbo, the new owners of Mount Timothy Recreation Resort have gotten it back into the forefront of winter fun in the South Cariboo. The resort offers some of the most affordable skiing and snowboarding in the province. Focused on offering
an “unhurried, unworried” family atmosphere, the lifts are open from 9 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. from Thursday to Sunday. For the kids who aren’t ready to ski or need a break, there is also a tubing hill. The lodge is open until 7
p.m. The mountain also offers two trails, a beginner and an intermediate. A full day of skiing for an adult is $50, youth for $38 and junior (6-12) for $20. The lodge also has a newly renovated kitchen.

ometimes the best part of winter is sitting on your favourite lawn chair with some friends and a cooler of suitable beverages, waiting for that nice laker or kokanee to nip at the line. With numerous lakes in the area and long winter, the South Cariboo has plenty of ice fishing to offer. If it’s a casual outing with friends, family or a date - a number of lakes are available for that, too many to mention really. The Interlakes area is perhaps the most popular ice fishing destination but you’ll also find plenty of anglers at Lac la Hache and Canim Lake. If it’s competitive ice fishing you’re on the hunt for, plenty of organizations have got the line ready for you. The Fishing Highway 24 Tourism Association hosts an annual ice fishing derby in February at Sheridan Lake. This year, it was hosted at the Sheridan Lake Resort but has been contested at the Loon Bay Resort. The Deka Lake and District Volunteer Fire Department also hosts another popular fishing derby. A very weather-dependent activity, both events usually have around 200 people come to the event if the weather is great. Even if it’s -30 C, a number of people still bring their rods and augers out to win that top prize.

There is a trail in almost every corner of the area, including Clinton, Green Lake, Mica Mountain and the Interlakes area. The Gold Rush Snowmobile Trail is one of the most beloved of the trails, starting at 70 Mile House and going all the way up to Horsefly, with connections to 100 Mile House. More development is also planned, with extensions to Clinton, Likely and Wells proposed. Despite having ‘snowmobile’ in the name, the trail is in fact multi-purpose. The trail also is rich in history, based on the historic path people used in the 1850s to strike gold. It is now a homage to those people and the trials they faced on the trail. No matter if visitors or newcomers
are new in the activity of snowmobiling, there are a few clubs in the area able to show them the ropes, including the Green Lake Snowmobile Club, Interlakes Snowmobile Club, the Mica Mountain Riders Association and the 100 Mile Snowmobile Club. The Cariboo Chilcotin has seven clubs in total, with 498 members between them. With around 1,056 kilometres of trail maintained by the clubs (five of which are in the South Cariboo) the trails as free and open as can be, allowing a true getaway from civilization.

RAIN GEAR This is perhaps the thing you’ll most likely regret packing. Most months in the South Cariboo have around 20 dry days. On the days with precipitation, less than 2 mm is the most common, so just stopping in for a quick cup of joe or even taking brief Val Severin photo. cover under a tree while it drips will usually do the trick. It’s probably best to leave the rain gear at home but if you’re feeling unsure, June tends to be the wettest month. Sunglasses, on the other hand, are almost a must in both summer and winter.
GOOD SHOES If you’re planning to go out into the bush at all, you’ll definitely want to bring a good pair of shoes. Not all trails are easy to navigate in a pair of flip flops. Because of how dry it is, occasionally, you might even run into some small cactuses so even a pair of flats could still leave you with an unpleasant prickle.
ZOOM It’s generally advisable not to get too close to wild animals, especially in the somewhat sparsely populated South Cariboo where animals might not be used to humans. A zoom lens on your camera is a great thing to pack to get a closer look or, alternatively, binoculars are an especially popular choice for local bird watching.
SWIM GEAR
Wondering whether you should throw in that bear bell or spray? It depends on your plans. If you’re planning to spend your time by some of the more popular lakes, you can probably leave it at home. Similarly, if you’re heading out with a guide, they should be taking care of that kind of thing. However, if you plan to do longer hikes, kayak or camping trips it wouldn’t go amiss, unless it’s winter of course.
TECHNOLOGY Cell phone service is starting to make itself to most corners of the South Cariboo but it’s not everywhere yet. The same goes for high-speed internet. Before you pack your laptop and other gear, you might just want to check with your accommodation that you’ll actually be able to go online. Because of the sometimes spotty cell service, it’s also a good idea to bring a map (or pre-download it) and let people know where you’re going when you head out.
