Spring Funding 2020 FOR HEALTH RELATED PROJECTS

The Invermere Health Care Auxiliary Society is pleased to invite non-profit organizations to apply for funding for projects that will enhance health care and healthy living in our community.

The source of funding for the IHCAS is the Invermere Thrift Store, 90-plus volunteers working tirelessly to strengthen health initiatives in the Columbia Valley. Crossfit cup Last weekend seven teams from Endeavor Fitness went to Fernie to compete in a CrossFit competition, The Kootenay Cup. The teams represented Invermere well, sweeping the podium in the scaled division and taking first in the RX division.

Many of Endeavor’s athletes achieved personal record lifts and times and for some it was their first CrossFit competition.

The Kootenay Cup is a four-series competition with CrossFit Fernie as the first location.

“I’m just SO STINKIN’ PROUD of all of these people and they make my heart so happy that I wanted to share it,” said competitor Bailey Yeats.

VALLEY NEWS Radium hot pools closed until spring

By Signe Olynyk Special to the Pioneer On Wednesday, February 26, nearly 30 concerned residents and business owners attended a meeting at the Radium Hot Springs Centre, organized by Parks Canada, for an update on the hot springs pool closure.

This past fall, the pools were shut down from October 21 to December 20 for renovations. They opened briefly over the Christmas holidays, and then closed again on January 11 due to structural damage that was discovered during the renovations.

Parks Canada, the Radium Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Radium, and other stakeholders have been in close communication about the situation, but that has done little to comfort visitors who have come to the area only to discover the pools closed.

Some hotels in Radium are reporting a 98 per cent vacancy rate, and staff find themselves on the front line for facing the frustration, disappointment and anger some visitors have upon learning the news.

Combined with the traffic circle construction planned for this year, the upcoming highway diversion, potential forest fires, conflict between B.C. and other provinces over the pipeline, and financial challenges for the energy sector affecting Alberta, some worry that the shut down will have long-term consequences for the town and that businesses may be unable to recover.

“Business owners are hurting and believe that their pain is partly as a result of the extended closures. People are feeling frustrated and helpless. It is a difficult situation for all,” said Clara Reinhardt, Radium’s mayor. “Business owners are sharing that this has been the slowest off season for them since the low after the 2008 slump. Local residents who participate in programs like Swim Club or Aquafit are also disappointed at losing the access to the pools.”

As one local business owner who wished to not be identified said, ‘It’s ridiculous that a federal heritage building has been neglected to a point where it is has to be shut down for safety.”

There were also complaints raised about how long road construction has been taking near the pools, why there is still no vendor in the restaurant space after years, and concerns that timelines keep being extended for closures. Some also called for better communication as they only heard about the meeting after reading an email from the Radium Hot Springs fire department.

superintendent for Lake Louise, Yoho, and Kootenay National Park. He said he understands the importance of the pools to the area and sympathizes with local businesses.

“As tough and as difficult as this is, we need to work together. We can come out better as a community as a result,” he said. “This is an old heritage building, and not all problems can be anticipated – especially when you are dealing with water.”

The area affected is the wet hall – the long hallway between the change rooms and the pools where bathers make their way to and from the warm waters. While the floors were being re-tiled during the renovations, an engineer discovered that the concrete floor was disintegrating. The entire slab is in danger of collapsing. Beneath this slab is a basement filled with pipes and all the mechanical makings required for running the facility. It is a public safety risk, as well as a risk for the workers and contractors below.

Feds fail to consult Invermere, Shuswap on groyne. Again.

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com Public Service and Procurement Canada (PSPC) has once again put forward a plan to mark the Lake Windermere rock groyne, but is once again being slammed for inadequate consultation.

The groyne, also sometimes called a weir, is the long structure made mostly of rocks sitting across the mouth of the Columbia River, just barely submerged, as it drains out of Lake Windermere. It was constructed more than a century ago in the era of steamboat travel along the Columbia, to help keep the river channel

clear and to increase the velocity of the river. In the current era the groyne, having long since fallen into disuse and often lying just a foot or so below the surface, is known mostly for ripping the motors off the boats of unsuspecting owners who have launched their crafts at the nearby Athalmer public boat launch.

Many locals cite the potential for a serious accident to occur due to the groyne, but entities that have voluntarily marked the groyne with buoys in the past (including the district of Invermere and the Rotary Club of Invermere) stopped doing so some years ago on legal advice that by marking the groyne they were assuming legal liability in event of an accident.

This past week, February 24 through March 1, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 46 calls for service. The following is a summary of some of the files our officers responded to.

On Monday, February 24 at about 4:45 p.m. a resident on Columbia Lake Road in Windermere reported an older blue Ford pickup pulled up in front of his residence and a male passenger of the truck proceeded to walk onto his property and take several jerry cans with fuel.

On Tuesday, February 25 at about 3 a.m. a Columbia Valley RCMP officer was conducting patrols for a suspicious blue Ford pickup which had been involved in a theft of fuel during the previous day. The officer located the blue truck parked on Stanley Street in Radium Hot Springs and confirmed the truck had been stolen out of Golden. When the officer approached the truck, he discovered it was occupied by an adult male. The male was arrested for possession of stolen property. A 48-year-old male from Golden was released on strict conditions to appear in court at a later date.

On Wednesday, February 26 at 11:15 p.m. emergency services responded to a single vehicle rollover north of Juniper Heights on Highway 93/95. The driver of a GMC pickup had lost control of his vehicle and rolled into the ditch. The lone male driver was transported to the hospital by ambulance to be assessed.

On Saturday, February 29, Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a theft of a snowmobile. A black and yellow 2015 Skidoo Summit 800 was stolen off the back of a truck that was parked on Skookum Frontage Road in Windermere sometime overnight.

On Saturday, February 29 at about 3:30 p.m. police received a report of a single vehicle motor vehicle incident on Highway 93 near Floe Lake in Kootenay National Park. The driver of a westbound Ford F150 lost control of the truck and went into the ditch. The occupants were reportedly uninjured and received a ride to Banff prior to police arriving.

On Saturday, February 29 at 4 p.m. Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a female taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent. The female was located at a residence in Black Forest Trails in Invermere and arrested for outstanding warrants. The female was held in custody in order to be brought before a judge.

On Sunday, March 1 shortly after midnight, officers were conducting patrols on Highway 93/95 near Invermere when they stopped to speak to the driver of a Hyundai Santa Fe that was parked on the side of the highway.

During their interactions with the driver, the officers established grounds to believe the driver was in possession of a controlled substance. The driver was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and a search incidental to arrest resulted in the discovery of several packages of substances suspected to be illicit drugs along with other items consistent with drug trafficking. A 34-year-old male from Revelstoke was released on conditions to appear in court at a later date.

Columbia Valley RCMP Sergeant Darren Kakuno was at the February 25 meeting of Invermere council, delivering his quarterly report to council. “Our third quarter was relatively uneventful,” Kakuno told council, adding it’s typical to see calls for service decline in the Columbia Valley in October and then pick back up once the ski season starts in December.

Kakuno mentioned there were 166 calls for service in the third quarter in 2019, down from 194 in the third quarter in 2018, and noted that one single-night theft-from-motor-vehicles spree in November accounted

for almost as many such thefts as the first two quarters combined. He outlined that the detachment priorities for 2019-2020 are road safety, crime reduction, youth work, and substance abuse.

Councillor Gerry Taft asked Kakuno if the problem with opioids, fentanyl specifically, was getting worse, better or staying more or less the same in Invermere, pointing out it had been a major concern here a few years ago.

“It (fentanyl) is here, but we have been fortunate in that it’s not as pervasive as it is in other areas. Knock on wood, we haven’t had any fatal overdoses in the past two years,” replied Kakuno, adding, however, that “drugs are always a concern for us. You never know when a bad batch is coming in from somewhere else.”

Toxic drugs in Cranbrook Last week Interior Health issued an alert that there were recent reports of multiple overdoses with severe outcomes in Cranbrook. Some of the overdoses appear to be linked with MDMA (Molly/Ecstacy).

For your safety Interior Health recommends that drug users: • Use Drug Checking Services prior to using any drugs (www.drugchecking.ca).

• Avoid using different drugs at the same time or using drugs and alcohol together.

• Don’t use alone. Leave door unlocked.

Tell someone to check on you.

• Test by using a small amount, then go slow.

• Carry a Naloxone kit and know how to use it.

• Use at an overdose prevention or supervised consumption site if one is near you.

Know the signs of overdose and how to respond • Recognize the signs of an overdose: slow or no breathing, gurgling or gasping, lips/fingertips turning blue, difficult to rouse (awaken), non-responsive.

• Call 911 immediately.

• Open airway and give rescue breaths.

• Give naloxone (Narcan) to the person if you have it.

School leadership changes

By James Rose Special to the Pioneer Change is afoot at the leadership level of School District 6 (SD6), as Karen Shipka has been announced as the next superintendent. Shipka is taking the reins from Paul Carriere who announced his retirement at the end of January after 22 years working for the district. Shipka will start her new position in August.

“Working with students, parents and staff at the school and district level, with many district education partners, and with the board, I have been privileged to enjoy an amazing learning journey over the past 22 years,” said Carriere in his retirement letter to the school board trustees. “In the years to come I will remain grateful for the people of this district, who provided me the opportunity to share my passion for education, who encouraged me to work toward a shared vision of excellence, and inspired me to ‘care deeply, act wisely and find joy in each day.’”

The selection of a superintendent is a major decision of a board of education.

“The superintendent plays a key role in working directly with the board,” said Amber Byklum, school board trustee.

“The board takes this responsibility very seriously and understands how important this role is to the various partner groups.”

The board posted the superintendent position at the beginning of December and ran the posting until the end of January. A shortlist was developed and interviews took place midway through February.

“We [engaged] with our partner groups and received input regarding the top skills the board should seek in a new leader,” said Byklum. “Our partners included our employee groups – teachers, administrators and support staff – District Parent Ad-

visory Council, and Indigenous education partners: Shuswap Band, Akisq’nuk First Nation and local Metis Associations.”

Byklum, on behalf of the board, expressed excitement at the opportunity to have broad input into the selection of Shipka who will help lead the Rocky Mountain School District into the future.

Shipka joins SD6 after having served as deputy superintendent, human resources and learning with Grande Yellowhead Public School Division 77 in Alberta since 2014. In her role, she had responsibility for all functions related to human resources and payroll, and for the learning portfolio, including curriculum and assessment, inclusive education, Indigenous education and technology services.

In addition to the departure of Carriere, assistant superintendent Jennifer Turner is also leaving. “[Turner] gave notice in December that she had accepted the position as the new superintendent in Fort McMurray Public Schools in Alberta,” said Byklum. Turner’s new position commenced on March 1, 2020.

“We congratulate Mrs. Turner on her new position and thank her for her service to SD6 for the past eight years,” said Byklum. “In the short term, Carriere and assistant superintendent Cheryl Lenardon will provide leadership in these areas, working with principals and district staff in a variety of roles to ensure service to students.”

Byklum noted the vacancies did not arise at the same time, despite the close proximity when news of the departures became public.

Over at David Thompson Secondary School, more change is ahead. Principal Darren Danyluk is moving to Vancouver and assuming responsibility for the British Columbia Principals’ and Vice-principals’ Association for a two-year term.

“I intend to return to School District 6 in the summer of 2022,” he said.

PERSPECTIVE Terrible conversations

You know the ones where someone says: “when you did X, it made me feel Y”? That phrase is my automatic response now when someone I care about does something that pokes my feelings in the eye.

Sure, it’s the kind of conversation no one enjoys, but it’s been fascinating to see how quickly issues can be resolved when they’re addressed head on.

Sometimes it takes less than a minute to hash out an issue and come to a resolution.

Maybe the problem was just a misunderstanding.

Maybe it came from someone saying something without thinking. Maybe it came from anger or frustration about something I did, for which they deserve an apology. Or maybe they were just having a bad day and I got in the way.

Whatever it is – even if the other person is upset about something I did – I’d rather know what’s wrong so I have a chance to fix it.

Without addressing misunderstandings or slights, resentments can simmer for eons and potentially ruin relationships. I’m sure we’ve all seen tiny doses of poison cause mortal wounds.

Years ago a good friend of mine and I had a silent fight that ruined our friendship. Neither of us said why we were upset, and it meant we didn’t have the chance to save our friendship. We went nearly a decade without speaking before he reached out. A decade wiser, we both apologized and patched things up. It turns out that – except for some hurt feelings that weren’t aired out – nothing had been wrong.

In a conflict-resolution workshop I took when I had a government job, the facilitators asked participants to start with the base assumption that everyone we deal with is a reasonable, rational and decent person.

Rather than dismissing others as unhinged or as villains, the facilitators encouraged us to consider their humanity. After all, if the other person is doing their best, maybe they aren’t trying to hurt you or take advantage of you.

And even if the other person is deplorable, assuming the best of them means that at least you get to enter and exit your interaction with your dignity intact.

I like the premise of starting by assuming that everyone you’re dealing with is a decent person. Most people are, especially the ones we like and that we’ve hand-picked to have in our lives. It’s a sign of liking someone – and of liking yourself – to have an unpleasant conversation in order to have a better relationship in the end.

Trump hurting democracy Fresh old ideas

By Arnold Malone Pioneer Columnist Donald Trump. If you have never heard this name before then you were dead prior to 2015.

(Which would make reading this article rather difficult). There has been no name mentioned more times by more people in the past four years than his.

The number of persons who are neutral about Trump is as scarce as hen’s teeth. People either love him or hate him. Trump is a person who you either swear by or swear at.

There are reasons why his followers provide their support. America did have a problem with illegal immigration. China was stealing intellectual property and using cheap labour to market products that were formerly produced in democracies. Michigan/ the Ohio Valley was a region of past glory that is now a rusted region with high unemployment. During Trump’s mandate, manufacturing is returning, stock markets reflect unusual economic growth and unem-

ployment is shrinking.

So, when those above matters seem personally important, they become self-serving reasons to support the president. This is however short-term gratification. In this presidency, democracy, consultation with others, freedom of speech, independence of the judiciary, respect for Congress and a host of other pillars of democracy are being corroded.

Life is full of our need for balancing good against evil. The automobile is one example. Almost everyone has ridden in a vehicle and many are in a vehicle every day, yet cars kill a lot of people. The internet is another example. True it assists terrorism, gang organization and facilitates protest groups. Yet, on balance most of us use and enjoy the internet.

In Trump’s case, his negative posturing out weighs the value of his good. The USA had a problem with illegal immigration but ripping children away from their parents and housing both groups in sub-standard grossly unsanitary conditions is an insult to human dignity.

Among his worst actions is his interference with the judiciary. That practice takes place in countries like Russia and North Korea. When one person dominates in the making of law while also standing in the judgment of law, that place becomes one-person Continued on page 8 . . .

BUSINESS FOR SALE

Benefits of immigration Dear Editor, In response to ‘The case against immigration’ letter from February 20, I thought I would respond with some facts.

The population of Canada is 37.59 million. The Conference Board of Canada reports that by 2034 more Canadians will die each year than will be born. To maintain our present population, and to grow our economy, Canada needs to encourage immigration. Luckily, we are a safe, vibrant, healthy country that is appealing to many from around the world. Canada’s plan is to increase the number of immigrants to 350,000 by 2021, less than one per cent of the population. To get to the population of 110 million that the writer feared, it would take approximately 215 years!

Each year 75,000 to 80,000 temporary workers fill positions for which employers cannot find Canadian workers. International students generate significant innovation and growth in the Canadian education sector, contributing more than $15.5 billion to the Canadian economy in 2016 alone.

I did check the numbers the writer presented and researched the communities she referenced. The only sites that repeat her message were actually self-labelled as islamophobic. (At least the Cultural Action Party of Canada site, where I found some of the information she posted, is being honest with the motivations behind their posts).

Fort Mac, it appears, concerns the writer because 15 per cent of their population is now Muslim. They are building a large mosque and the hospital is now serving food that respects their diets.

As for Brooks, Alberta, it was not the federal government foisting these new employees on the town, but the Canadian Meat Council that was lobbying for changes to the immigration policy. It seems they could not find enough Canadians who would work as butchers. They are hoping to welcome 2,750 new workers every year for the next three years. Imagine the tax dollars going into the coffers of every level of government with that many more people working, plus the growth the company itself can experience?

As for companies building housing for employees: it happens in many communities. It happens here. If a business needs employees to make money, and there is nowhere for them to live, it makes business sense to house them.

If you truly care about Canada, I would imagine you would support immigration.

You just need to look at countries, like Japan, that have not encouraged immigration to see the consequences of the writer’s views.

Her push to have B.C. separate from Canada over this issue is confusing.

Invermere-Shuswap bus may be coming

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com There may soon be better transportation links between Invermere and the Shuswap Indian Reservation, and possibly even a new pedestrian bridge in Athalmer connecting the two.

During last week’s council meeting, Invermere council members voted unanimously to commit $10,000 in funding as part of a joint application between the district and the Shuswap Indian Band to the B.C. Active Transportation grant program. The Shuswap have already committed $10,000 to the application. If a further $30,000 can be found (through entities such as the Columbia Basin Trust), then the government will provide $50,000 in matching funds, for a total of $100,000 for the project.

Invermere planner Rory Hromadnik explained at the meeting that Invermere and the Shuswap started working on the application roughly a year ago, and have been selected as one of eight communities in Canada to be part of the Community Economic Development Initiatives (CEDI) - Connected Communities Initiative.

“The idea is to get communities to be better neighbours,” said Hromadnik. “What’s going to come of it: an active transportation link between Shuswap and Invermere.” That link will likely be a bus service, he added, although it could mean improvements to the pedestrian part of the existing bridge or even a new foot bridge altogether.

“It’s really not pleasant to walk across that bridge as a pedestrian,” said Hromadnik, adding that any potential bridge work would necessarily involve many other federal and provincial agencies, since quite a few of them have some sort of jurisdiction over the river and nearby Lake Windermere.

“But before we get into that, we need to see what the options are, what’s reasonable, and what’s actually feasible,” he said.

Hromadnik later told the Pioneer that the three options for the brige include using cantilevers to widen and saften the existing pedestrian walkway on the south side of the bridge; using the piling infrastructure to put in a new walkway under the north side of the current bridge; or a brand new standalone foot bridge.

Sewer spending

By Dauna Ditson dauna@columbiavalleypioneer.com Canal Flats is seeking permission to borrow $950,000 and hoping not to need it. The village’s aging sewer system – including a lift station from the 1960s – is nearing the end of its life. The old lift station is “critical infrastructure,” said Adrian Bergles, the village’s chief administrative officer. “It’s not in good condition.”

After waiting over a year to hear about grants requested through a joint federal/provincial infrastructure program, Bergles is looking into back-up plans to keep the community from backing up.

“We’re preparing for an instance if we don’t get (the lift stations grant),” he said, adding that he wants to be ready to “strike out on our own.”

As the grants for the lift stations and sewage treatment plant aren’t retroactive, the village wouldn’t be reimbursed for any money it might spend before the requests are approved or declined. “It’s a holding pattern.

Its frustrating,” Bergles said. Rebuilding the lift stations would cost an estimated $700,000 (or $0 with a grant), while upgrades at the plant are pegged at $913,000 (or $250,000 after a grant). “There’s some possibility that the community won’t have to foot the bill,” he said. But if they do, he wants the funds ready to go. Residents will be consulted about allowing the village to borrow the cash.

Canal Flats council awards funding

By Dean Midyette Special to the Pioneer The February 25 regular meeting of the Canal Flats council had a relatively light agenda.

The majority of the debate centred around the Grantin-Aid applications. Council was firm on not raising allocations above the budgeted ceiling while at the same time acknowledging the needs of the service groups within Canal Flats. As a number of the stakeholder groups were represented at the meeting, council opened the floor to facilitate comments and clarifications during the discussion. In the end, council awarded $8,250 supporting the Canal Flats Food Bank, the Community Society, the Civic Center, the Columbia Lake Stewardship Society, the Seniors Club, the History and Culture group, the Headwaters Arts Society, minor hockey, Canal Flats Insight and the Hospice Society. In a number of cases the support was a waiver of fees rather than a transfer of tax dollars. The Village is moving ahead with the FireSmart program. Council also adopted Terms of Reference for the project and approved the preparation of a grant application to UBCM for up to $25,000 for emergency planning. The Village of Canal Flats Building Bylaw No 230, 2020 received first and second readings.

Democracy at the best of times is fragile. The institutions of democracy are the bedrock upon which freedom is built. The pillars of democracy must be respected. Those rights listed in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms along with the independence of the police, the courts and a non-politicized civil service are essentials to the well-being of a democracy.

Donald Trump has disregarded every pillar of de-

mocracy. The growth of wealth is important. But it is of no value if the price is the erosion of citizen’s rights.

It is possible to have a benevolent dictator but sooner or later that power is transferred to a ruthless person who thirsts for power and self-adulation.

The Congress and the Senate have the capacity to influence the president’s power. Time is running thin for them to accept the fullness of their duty. While these comments are about the USA, they have a huge bearing on Canada and all other democracies. We need the USA to be strong and free. As the largest economy in the world it is their world-wide burden.

The USA needs a new cap that says: Make the Truth Great Again!

Rockies swept playoffs against Ghostriders Rockies won four games in a row against the Fernie Ghostriders and wait to see if they’ll battle the Thundercats or the Dynamiters in the next round of playoffs Submitted by Columbia Valley Rockies ROCKIES SWEEP and dispose of Ghostriders in four games.

Your Rockies opened their playoff run against the Fernie Ghostriders in Fernie on Friday and Saturday February 28 and 29.

The Rockies took the first game and opened with a 1-0 series lead. Rockies outshot the home team 41 to 38 with Bretton Park stopping 35 shots. Rockies scored goals from Colby Philips, Gavin Fleck, Ben Lake and Greg Parker, who scored with 1:21 remaining in the game.

The Rockies took the second game on Riders’ home ice on Saturday night. Bretton Park was the star of the night, stopping 41 shots on the way to the big win. Eric Lloyd and Tristan Lambert gave the Rockies a 2-0 lead after the first period and they never looked back. Owen Hughes put the Rockies up by 3 in the second. The only scoring in the third occurred after a Rockies turnover with six minutes left.

Rockies won 3-1 and took a 2-0 series lead and went home with the lead in the seven-game series.

On Monday night, March 2 the Rockies took the home ice with a huge supportive crowd. Bretton Park again stole the show for the Rockies, stopping 30 shots. Colby Philips and Eric Lloyd gave the Rockies a 2-1 lead after the first period. Hunter Rambow and Owen Hughes found the twine in the second and the Rockies took a 4-2 lead into the dressing room after the second.

In the third the Rockies held onto a 4-3 win and put a strangle on the series with a 3-0 lead.

On Tuesday a very focused and determined Columbia Valley Rockies hockey team took the ice in front of a packed Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena. Connor Davison opened the scoring in the first, and the period ended 1-0 Rockies. Colby Phillips netted one in the second giving the Rockies a 2-0 lead as the period ended.

invested $9.5 million dollars at the historic pools facility. Once finished, the improvements will be the most extensive since the facility opened in 1951. They will reflect new building codes, reduce the environmental footprint by leveraging natural geothermal energy, and will significantly improve comfort and enjoyment for visitors. The renovation in the change rooms is 90 per cent complete, with the wet hall repairs expected to take another four to six weeks.

When the Pioneer asked about alternatives such as bringing in portable change stations and accessing the pools through other areas, Parks Canada provided a statement that said: “The limited space adjacent to the pools doesn’t safely allow for an adequate portable change room/washroom facility on-site. All options that would have allowed the pool to remain open were explored and none were found that would allow us to meet health and safety obligations for visitors and Parks Canada team members.”

At present, wooden frame supports are being built and installed to shore up the floor. Once this process is complete, pipes and components will be removed and demolition will begin to remove and then replace the floor.

The groyne is under jurisdiction of PSPC and last summer, after years of talk, the federal agency finally put forward a plan to mark the structure. This resulted in a furor erupting since PSPC failed to consult any local stakeholders (including the District of Invermere, the Regional District of East Kootenay, the nonprofit Lake Windermere Ambassadors, and the nearby Shuswap Indian Band) before announcing the plan. Wilting under a few weeks of heated criticism, PSPC backtracked, indicating it would consult with relevant stakeholder groups.

The federal agency has now put forward another plan, but apparently has dropped the consultation ball, at least partly, yet again. During Invermere’s Tuesday, February 25 council meeting, council members discussed the issue, and voted to back Lake Windermere Ambassador comments on the plan, but Invermere planner Rory Hromadnik noted to council that the district was not consulted directly by PSPC, and was only alerted to the new plan by the Regional District of East Kootenay and the Lake Windermere Ambassadors, which were consulted and which noticed that Invermere had not been, and so forwarded the material. He noted that the Shuswap Indian Band had also once more been missed by PSPC. Shuswap chief Barb Cote confirmed this with the Pioneer, saying “no, we have not been consulted. I know they have a new plan, but we haven’t heard about it.”

“So they’ve kind of dropped the ball on the referrals. Again,” Hromadnik told councillors at the meeting, adding PSPC’s new proposal involves driving untreated

working very hard.

In the meantime, staff at the pools are being mostly redirected to other work. Some are taking additional training and certifications.

With this year being the centennial anniversary for the pools, the timing of the closure has been especially difficult. A number of spring events are planned, and Parks Canada welcomes ideas from the community on how to draw visitors back to the area.

A marketing and recovery plan will be developed and implemented, and Parks Canada will continue to work closely with Tourism Radium and the Radium Chamber of Commerce to maximize the efforts.

Mayor Reinhardt said, “There has been a lot of focus on the negative aspects of the extended pool closures, but people have still been out enjoying snowshoeing, skating, skiing, indoor activities, festivals and much more over the winter. There is so much to do here in Radium and area, and I would remind people that we are very clearly and actively open for business.”

The Pleiades Spa and Wellness located at the pools remains open by appointment.

Parks Canada advised that updates will be posted on hotsprings.ca, and that they will have a staff member at the Radium Hot Springs Visitor Information Centre available to answer questions and suggest alternate activities in the area. wood piles into the groyne, extending for about 200 metres in a single line along the rocky structure, spaced about 20 metres apart. The Lake Windermere Ambassadors had provided feedback on the plan to PSPC, which the organization shared with the District of Invermere. Ambassadors’ program coordinator Shannon McGinty raised several key issues in her response to PSPC, including the potentially negative aesthetic impact the piles may have on a part of the community that is essentially the entrance to Invermere, questions on the likely lifespan of the piles, a request to see environmental considerations taken when deciding on the plan, a request to see other options considered aside from the piles, and the lack of opportunity for seasonal residents to comment on the plan.

“The way the plan is detailed (for the piles), it certainly won’t look appealing as you are driving into town from the crossroads, and it’s certainly not what we are going for with our ‘entrance to Invermere,’” said mayor Al Miller at the council meeting, going on to register his concern that the Shuswap and seasonal residents on the east side of the lake appear not to be getting a chance to provide feedback. “The groyne has been as it is for a very long time. I think there’s no harm in letting it stay this way a while longer in order to do some proper consultation.” Other council members agreed, voting unanimously to respond to PSPC indicating support for the Lake Windermere Ambassadors’ comments.

The Peewee A team travelled to Kimberley this weekend for their Banner Tournament.

The first two games were against strong teams from Elk Valley and Kimberley, with whom we struggled against all year. We were tied with Elk Valley after two periods, but ran out of steam and lost 10-2.

Against Kimberley we came out strong and led for the first period but they were too strong and won 12-3. On Saturday, Jesse McIntosh had a great game in goal, and we beat Cranbrook 6-4 although we were outshot 40-25. In our last game we beat a much improved Golden team 8-6 in a barn burner. Leading goal scorers were Caden Williams with six, Kaydn Chasse with 5, and Ethan Spencer with 3. Also scoring were Brayden Roe and Jack McAffer with two each and Spencer Goldsmith with one. Our defence took a beating with Cimone Zimmer and Cameron Jacobsen both playing through injuries, and Carson Scheffer did a great job moving back to cover when needed. Congratulations on a great season. Thank you to all the coaches and parent volunteers who assisted the boys in having the great season.

The Peewee B team travelled to Golden for their banner weekend. In their first game against Golden the game was close through two periods and tied at 1, but the Rockies broke it open in the third period and came out on top 6-1. On Saturday evening against the top-seeded Fernie team the Rockies stayed close until midway in the second period only down 1-0, but Fernie scored 4 more goals in the latter part of the second period. The Rockies broke their shutout in the third period on a goal by Thomas Meena but fell 5-1. In their final game on Sunday they defeated a higher-seeded Kimberley team 6-0, a team that they had not beaten throughout the reg-

ular season. Cohen Lawrick picked up the shutout and was very solid all weekend. As Fernie would go on to win the banner, the Rockies consider finishing third a great improvement over their regular season standing. Thank you to all the coaches and volunteers for making this year much more successful than last.

The Atom House team played their Banner tournament over the weekend at the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena. What an awesome tournament, with the Rockies earning second place in their division. In their first game the Rockies won 10-3 against the Fernie Ghostriders. The Rockies dominated the game with Ethan Dewey, Maya Eccles and Syndee Brooks all scoring 2 goals each. The Rockies tied their second game against the Golden Rockets.

The game was intense and close all the way to the end. The Rockies almost took home the win 8-7 but the Rockets came back to score a goal in the last two minutes of the game making it a tie at 8-8. Ethan Dewey took home a hat trick. Colin Kakuno, Jaecie Chursinoff, Brayden Rice, Hayden Walker and Sydnee Brooks all scored. The final game of the tournament was also a very close game. The Golden Rockets won 8-7 against the Rockies for first place. Maya Eccles took home the hat trick. Theo Wilson and Kadie Schick scored only a minute apart from each other at the very end. Congratulations to the whole team for an outstanding weekend. The Atom House team would like to thank their coaches, Jody Books, Doug Schick and Mike Rice as well as their team manager, Sandra Shaw, for the incredible amount of time they devoted to the team. They were instrumental in making the 2019/2020 hockey season fun and successful and their efforts are truly appreciated.

The East Kootenay Bantam Zone team beat Fort St. John in the final of the zone playdowns, thus advancing to the Bantam AA Provincials in Kelowna, beginning March 16. Locals Ryan Tamelin, Eric Fanderl and Paddy Donahue play on the team.

Cross country skiers go places, including the BC Winter Games

Submitted by Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club It was a busy weekend for Toby Creek Nordic Skiers. Close to home, our regular youth ski program was held at Nipika. In addition to lessons, there was a fun poker game and orienteering on skis.

Midget races Another group of skiers, families and coaches travelled to Kamloops for the Midget Races. These races were open to skiers ranging in age from 9 to 12 years. This year saw racers from across the province and the US. The Toby Creek club had eight youth participate in the races.

One of the highlights of this event is the relay. Costumes are a must, and every year there is a lot of discussion around what the theme should be. The kids decided that they would be “fearless, fearful and funny” vikings and they skied their hearts out in two teams: “Ullr’s Warriors” and “Luca and Shield Maidens.”

Medals at BC Games In the junior development program, four athletes – Emmylou, Carly, Virginia and Lenni – attended the BC Winter Games that were held in Fort St. John.

In total, close to 1,500 athletes attended the games, along with 2,000 volunteers, 300 coaches and 190 officials.

The Toby Creek skiers represented the

Kootenay Zone 1 and enjoyed the opportunity to be part of a regional team. They had lots of fun with their teammates from Fernie, Kimberley, Rossland and Nelson.

As well, Toby Creek Nordic Club skiers had terrific results and brought home seven medals. All four athletes placed in the top 10 skiers in the three races. Quite an achievement!

All skiers enjoyed friendship, fun and food at the provincial games.

Virginia loved the special activities organized during downtime – which included a bouncy castle, nerf gun battles and Just Dance.

These activities pushed athletes from all over B.C. to meet each other and create new friendships.

Lenni found Fort St. John pretty flat compared to their usual races and enjoyed being with other racers from the region.

Carly especially enjoyed her relay race and feeling the Zone 1 team spirit. She noted that there were more committed volunteers than athletes at the event and appreciated that the venue was calm and organized.

Emmylou found the races very different from what she is used to in the valley as there were no mountains as landmarks, just tall skinny trees, and she thought it felt like they were skiing in a corn maze. She appreciated that the town was decorated with ice sculptures and had an ice slide.

The local athletes also loved watching dancers, a choir, competitors in other sports and hearing from Denny Morrison, an Olympic speed skater from Fort St. John.

Local author invited to England for VE Day Anniversary Submitted by Elinor Florence

Elinor Florence of Invermere, who wrote the bestselling wartime novel Bird’s Eye View, will be one of the guest speakers at a special event in England marking the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day on May 8, 2020, and she is inviting everyone in the valley to join her.

Her novel tells the story of a Canadian airwoman who serves as an aerial photo interpreter at RAF Medmenham in England, a beautiful white stone mansion located west of London that served as the headquarters for photo interpretation during the war. Published by Dundurn Press in 2014, the book went on to become a Canadian bestseller.

After the war the mansion became a luxury hotel called Danesfield House Hotel, which is hosting the weekend event.

Florence will be joined by other notable wartime authors, Royal Air Force veterans, and even a 97-year-old former photo interpreter.

“I visited the hotel twenty years ago when I was doing my research but never imagined I would be invited back as a guest!” Florence said. “It’s a very posh hotel, where George and Amal Clooney held their wedding reception. I’m thrilled

DaCosta, Daryl Ann April 27, 1962 – February 14, 2020 With great sadness, the family of Daryl Dacosta announces her passing.

Daryl grew up in the suburb of Don Mills Toronto, and after marrying her husband Max, they moved to Barrie, ON. In 2009 Daryl moved out west to join her sister here in Invermere, B.C. Later, her husband Max followed her to Invermere.

Once here, Daryl fell in love with the new environment and nature, and enthusiastically engaged in hiking, climbing and walking her favorite four legged “sidekicks”, taught Zumba classes and enjoyed the fresh mountain air and her new job, working for Heather at Effusion Art Gallery. Daryl was a retail specialist and immersed herself fully in learning everything about the exhibiting artists and their works. Artists and clients appreciated and embraced Daryl’s passion and talent for art and its creators.

In 2017 Daryl was diagnosed with Frontal Temporal Lobe Dementia, a rare form that attacks younger age groups and in 2018 she moved into Columbia House for full-time care. As the disease progressed, Daryl gradually lost her ability to walk and talk, but never lost her ability to laugh, smile and giggle.

Daryl lived life her way, right to the end. Her favourite phrase and end of every conversation was “love you, love you, love you,” she said goodbye to us and the world fittingly on Valentines day, 14 minutes past 5 in the afternoon.

Daryl was pre-deceased by her father Delroy in 2008. Her family would like to extend great appreciation and thanks to Dr. Maslowska, for greatly caring for and treating Daryl, the staff at COHO for caring with love and respect, and to the other inhabitants of COHO who are a great community of awesome people. Further a thanks to the community of Invermere, who allowed Daryl to live life as she deserved.

S OBITUARY S Bracken, Bryan Oliver February 21, 1944 – February 9, 2020 Bryan Oliver Bracken, a gentle, loving and caring man, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 9, 2020 at the age of 75 years, with his loving family holding him closely, easing away his pain. This most devoted man has left a permanent mark etched on our hearts. His determination and strength were admirable until the end.

Bryan had a vivacious personality and always made people around him laugh, making friends everywhere he went. He was not only an amazing husband, father and Poppa but also an accomplished businessman known around the Columbia Valley area. Proud to have his son by his side, Bryan accomplished great things.

Developing the Bracken family business included such ventures as a MacLeod’s store in Invermere, Smitty’s restaurants in Radium, Osoyoos and Rocky Mountain, AB, and Fairmont Grocery along with his involvement in the Springs Golf Course in Radium. Building his first big project, an A&W in Airdrie, AB, encouraged and excited him to go on and build his final business, the Super 8/Humpty’s in Invermere. Reaping the benefits of all his hard work, Bryan retired in 2006 to travel and enjoy life with his only love, Phyllis. While Bryan enjoyed great success in all aspects of his life, he never forgot his roots and maintained a spirit of humility, kindness and integrity that endeared him to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Bryan will be sadly missed by the many people whose lives he touched, impacted and inspired throughout his life as a friend, mentor, business associate and community leader.

A dedicated husband, father and Poppa, family was the essence of Bryan’s life. He was very proud and honoured to be the patriarch, mentor, Dad and Poppa, being a major presence in the lives of his children and grandchildren. He will be forever missed by his soulmate, best friend and loving wife of 54 years, Phyllis. The epitome of a Dad to Kelly (Valerie) and Kim; proud Poppa to his “Sweetheart” Kirstyn and “His Boys” Colby, Trisdan and Jordon.

Poppa cherished every moment together, drawing his strength through his family during every step of his courageous battle with cancer.

Bryan is also survived by his sisters, Lorraine, Shaaron (Ron), brother Terry (Charlotte) and sister-in-law Ollie as well as numerous nieces, nephews, special cousins, and countless friends.

Bryan was predeceased by his brother Wayne.

S OBITUARY S Haber, Ray September 9, 1951 – February 18, 2020 With great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Ray on February 18th, 2020.

He is survived by his son Jordan Haber, his mother Aileen Haber, his sister Patti Seymour and 2 nephews, Len and Kalen Seymour. He was predeceased by his father Tony Haber in 2000, with whom he was very close.

Ray was born in Vancouver B.C. and was adopted at 4 weeks of age by loving parents who brought him to be raised in Vernon B.C. During his life, Ray worked in different jobs ranging from a bookkeeper to a salesman for plumbing and hardware stores. After the passing of his father, Ray began to look for new work all over the province. He found an ad for NorthStar Hardware in Invermere and was thrilled when Leo Bukovinik decided to hire him to fill a position. Once there, he fell in love with his job, the people and the environment.

Ray had many hobbies through his life; most were with animals.

From saltwater aquariums, breeding cockatiels, and fancy canaries to his longest passion of falconry. Over his nearly 20 years of being in Invermere, Ray made many friendships and always enjoyed spending time with the locals. He always had great stories about the town and its people.

The family would like to thank Duane (Ed), Rose and Kevin for all their years of friendship and support to Ray. He loved you very much. We can’t thank you enough for all the love and help you’ve given us, the family, through this time.

We are planning a celebration of life to be held at the end of March.

The position will involve supporting the Shuswap Band and the Secwepemc Nation in Columbia River Treaty negotiations through study initiation, technical support and project management/guidance.

The Biologist will also be responsible for assisting the Director of Territorial Stewardship with the implementation of natural resource management projects and initiatives by providing biological support, project management, administration, training and education to community members.

EXPERIENCE • Knowledge of provincial and federal environmental processes, regulations and best management practices.

• Knowledge of life history, biology and habitat requirements of anadromous and freshwater salmonids in BC. • Knowledge of fisheries stock assessment and population estimation methodology.

• Knowledge of wildlife population assessment and estimation methodology.

• Knowledge of life history, biology and habitat requirements of ungulate species in BC. • Knowledge of fish and wildlife habitat restoration approaches, requirements and methodology.

• Knowledge of protected and endangered species populations, including conservation protection and rehabilitation.

• Advanced understanding of scientific research approaches, resources and technique.; • Experience preparing B.C. regulatory permit applications (e.g. Section 11 Applications, Fish Collection Permits, Wildlife Permits…etc.).

• Experience preparing Environmental Management Plans for construction projects.

• Experience as a QEP for environmental monitoring on construction projects.

QUALIFICATIONS: • Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous Communities required.

• Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology or related discipline required.

• Registered Professional Biologist designation or equivalent required.

• Minimum 5 years professional experience in biological sciences or related discipline.

• Minimum of 2 years’ experience with project management and coordination.

• Experience supervising environmental technicians in both office and field settings.

• Experience with project management, budgeting, and related administrative duties.

• Advanced computer skills in MS Office, knowledge of statistical software an asset.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills including experience delivering presentations, as well as writing scientific reports and funding proposals.

• Excellent interpersonal, problem solving and conflict resolution skills.

• Excellent attention to detail, organizational and time management skills.

• Ability to work independently as well as within a team setting.

• Ability to respond effectively to changing operational needs.

• Valid Class 5 BC driver’s license and reliable transportation.

• Training certificates in related areas are considered assets (e.g. First Aid, Swiftwater Rescue, Marine Emergency Duties, Small Vessel Operator Proficiency, and Backpack Electro Fishing).

“Images from the Backyard” is a narrative and visual presentation by Ryan Bavin of the mountains around Invermere and the Columbia Valley. Join Bavin at the Artym Gallery on Friday, March 6 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for a journey through the mountains close to his home of Invermere.

Learn a bit about the places, stories and legends of the backcountry not easily seen in this amazing area. This is the second in a series of talks hosted at the Artym by local residents about places or travels off the beaten path.

Bavin is a fourth-generation resident of the Columbia Valley; his great grandparents moved to the area in the early 1900s.

At the age of 12, Bavin’s parents gave him a camera during a backpacking trip near the Bugaboo Mountains.

Since then Bavin has taken thousands of images of the mountain areas around Invermere.

Bavin is also an Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) certified hiking guide. He spends his summers guiding and playing in the central/northern Purcell Mountains of B.C..

Local students learn LEGO coding Grade four and grade seven students from Windermere Elementary School entered the First Lego League competition in Calgary in February. They coded their robots to complete tasks and raced to finish as many tasks as possible. The local students competed after only four weeks of training and faced some difficult technical issues on the morning of the tournament, but came home with the Against All Odds award.

FAITH An Introduction to the Lenten Season “Return to Me with All Your Heart” (Joel 2:12)

By Fr. Jojo Augustin St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Here we are again in the time we call Lent. For many of us, the word “Lent” connotes drab days, giving up things and a long, long time waiting for spring. Lent means many things. A time of repentance. A time of sacrifice. A preparation for Easter. A time of let-down after the excitement of Christmas and New Year’s hopes.

We often overlook another meaning—the idea that Lent is an invitation to “return,” to be reconciled with God, with each other and with ourselves. Lent calls us to return to our hearts, to see what’s there and act from what we see. Lent is a season of the heart.

Lent began on the day we call “Ash Wednesday.”

(February 26th) Through the symbol of ashes, we are asked to remember that we are of the earth, created by another, and will not walk on the earth forever. We are

asked to repent; to look at ourselves, to recognize our separation from our God, and to return to the one who has created us. These disciplines are not ends in themselves.

They are a means to an end and that end is that we would return to God. Repentance, remembering, returning to God—all of these begin in our hearts. None of these is an intellectual exercise.

But what if Lent is a time to return to our hearts and find comfort there, and solace, and strength? What if Lent is a time to return to our souls and find our calling and our source of life? Is that what happened for Jesus when he was in a desert for 40 days? Can that happen for us?

The prophet Joel says: “Even now, says the Lord, return to me with your whole heart, with fasting and weeping, and mourning; rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the Lord your God”.

Why should we take the risk to do this? Joel answers: “For gracious and merciful is God, Slow to anger, rich in kindness, and relenting in punishment”. (Joel 2: 12-13) Lent need not be drab. Lent can be a time of finding ourselves and finding ourselves held in the mercy and rich kindness of the God who loves us.
