As entrepreneurs, we know that digital marketing is important but it often falls to the bottom of our priority lists. Even when we have spare time, where do we begin? In this blog post, I’ve rounded up three of my favourite tools we use at Camp Tech, Canada’s leading tech and digital skills training company. GOOGLE MY BUSINESS Google My Business is a tool that allows you to control all of your information presented on Google. Although this isn’t a typical digital marketing tactic, it’s one that will increase your online visibility and could lead to more engagement with your brand. Once you’re verified, people can leave you reviews, you can control your pin on Google Maps (and make sure you have one), show people photos of your space and a lot more. One of the most invaluable and often neglected tools of running a business is the maintenance of a bookkeeping system. Often “doing the books” is the last item a small business owner wants to deal with, but the information that can be provided by creating financial statements is often the lifesaver of a business. Financial statements tell you how your business it doing, whether or not you are meeting your goals and whether or not you can meet financial commitments. Doing the books manually is more time-consuming than using an accounting software package, but always know that understanding the basics of bookkeeping is essential for accurately entering data into a software program and understanding the reports it produces. Small to medium businesses usually find an “off-theshelf product” easily handles all their needs and will also be the most cost effective.

Imagine what women can do when they come together with the common goal to make a difference in their community. That is what 100 Women Who Care South Okanagan has been quietly doing for five years. Only now, they may have to change their name from 100 Women Who Care because there are currently more than 200 members. “The 100 Women Who Care started in April 2014 where we gathered a group of women to talk about the idea of meeting quarterly to learn about the organizations in our community and the amazing work they are doing and how we can support them,” said Sarah Trudeau, who is a founding member and the group’s co-ordinator. “We gained enough interest to host our first giving event in June of the same year where there were 35 women who showed up and we donated just over $2,000 to two local organizations.” The momentum continued to build, and for the first few years they averaged about 50-80 women per event. Fast forward to 2018 and there were over 200 members who paid the one-time commitment fee and well over 100 women attending the quarterly events. This year is set to be a benchmark year for the 100 Women, Sarah said. They are celebrating their five year anniversary and to date, the 100 Women have donated over $85,000 to 40 local organizations in the community.

“The women love the concept because once they pay the one-time commitment fee of $100, then it’s $200 per year ($50 per quarter) and they know 100 per cent of their donations is going to the charity,” said Trudeau. The women nominate their charity at the previous event and then three names are drawn. Those charities present to the group and the women vote on how to split the money. The two runner-up charities each get $500 for coming and the charity with the most votes gets the remainder of the donations. “There have been many times where there is not a dry eye in the room from the stories the charities have shared - even the chef who was catering one of our events was crying,” she said. “Many women have come up to me after and told me they made separate donations to the groups they have heard from because they felt so passionate about their cause.” Some of the charities they have given to over the five years are: SOWINS (South Okanagan Women in Need Society), Discovery House, Starfish Backpack Program, Pregnancy Care Program (OneSky Community Resources Society) and South Okanagan Children’s Charity. The 100 Women is made up of a committee of four women: Sarah Trudeau, Colleen Pennington, Lori Lawrie and Riley Gettens.

“I pitched the idea to them and they all loved it, so we formed our committee and launched it in April 2014. We still run the group with just us four volunteer committee members.” The Community Foundation of the South Okanagan Similkameen is the ‘backbone’ of the 100 Women in that it provides all of the administration and issuing tax receipts for the group, noted Trudeau. The 100 Women meet four times a year – April, June, September and November, often meeting at fun locations like wineries or restaurants. The next event is June 19 at Bench 1775 from 5 to 7 p.m. “We strive to make each event unique and special,” Trudeau said. “We always encourage guests at our events and there is never any pressure to sign-up.” 100 Women Who Care is open to all women — the more women who get involved, the greater the impact will be, Trudeau added. FIVE EFFECTIVE WAYS TO ALLEVIATE STRESS Submitted

Stress affects everyone at some point in their lives and does not discriminate based on gender, nationality, ethnicity, economic status, or age. Job-related stress costs businesses millions of dollars each year due to unanticipated absences. In fact, work is the foremost source of stress for many adults.

I moved to the South Okanagan in 2003 from the Lower Mainland and, besides a brief time in Calgary, have resided here ever since. I spent many years working in the service industry, but in 2010 I decided that it was time for me to go back to school. I always knew I wanted to do something environmental, so I took a year of Environmental Science at the Penticton Okanagan College Campus, and then transferred to the Water Engineering Technology Program at the Kelowna Campus. During my studies there, I was lucky enough to get a co-op position on the Sunshine Coast working in their utilities department, where I gained hands-on experience in the water and wastewater industry. When I completed my Technology Diploma in 2013, I was hired by the City of Penticton in the Waste Water Department as an Operator I. Over the past 6 years I have received my certifications and current position as a level III Operator. In my off time, I enjoy camping, fishing, gardening and spending time in the beautiful outdoors the City has to offer. I love living in this beautiful City and being apart of the City of Penticton team.

I was born and raised in Penticton. My curiosity with a career in the fire service started at a young age, when my family was evacuated from our home the summer of 1994, due to the Garnet Forest Fire. I also watched as the Okanagan Mountain Park Fire decimated this beautiful area we live in. After high school, I worked several years gaining experience as a Wildland Firefighter and went on to complete my Fire Academy training at Texas A&M University. I spent 4 years working as an Auxiliary Firefighter for the Penticton Fire Department and I’ve been a Career Firefighter for just over 2 years. In my time away from the Department, I like to stay involved in our Community. Most recently, I was a mentor at Fast and Female Penticton and I plan to mentor at Camp Ignite later this year. These are two events that empower young women through sport and active lifestyle and allow them to see any dream is possible. I am very proud to serve this City, to be a member of such a strong and progressive department, and live in such an incredible place.

My family and I originally came to Penticton in 2001. Together with my friends and family, I enjoy the great outdoor activities that we are privileged to have at our doorstep. I am an avid outdoor enthusiast and you’ll most likely meet me in the hills skiing, hiking, or mountain biking. I worked with the City of Penticton as a Water Treatment Plant Coop Student in 2015 and 2016. Afterwards, I spent several years gaining experience in some of the largest and technically challenging water facilities around BC before returning as a permanent employee to the City of Penticton in 2018. I am proud to be a part of the dedicated team at Penticton’s Water Treatment Plant – a Plant that goes above and beyond every day to ensure the health of the public and environment by providing safe drinking water through the meticulous operation of a state-of-the-art facility.

It is only my first year of employment with the City of Penticton and I already recognize the benefits of living and working in this beautiful lakeside town. I am so grateful to work with event organizers and volunteers, local businesses and residents, and tourism stakeholders to help attract and facilitate exciting events that contribute to our City’s economic and social vibrancy. I grew up in North Vancouver and my family has vacationed in the Okanagan every summer since I was born. I always looked forward to floating the channel and exploring the famed Penticton Bookstore! After graduating from the University of Victoria with a Master of Arts in Political Science, I worked in Edmonton as a Sport Tourism Coordinator for the Province of Alberta, and then in Canmore as a Sport Event Organizer for four World Cup events. It took about five years for the subzero temperatures and glacial lakes to freeze me out of Alberta, and for me to make my triumphant return to BC. Since my first day here, I’ve been welcomed with open arms by the City of Penticton staff and its residents. I am proud to be part of the City team!

Throughout my education and early career, I have had the unique pleasure of living in almost every major geography that Canada has to offer. Of all the amazing places to live, I have always been drawn back to the people and communities of BC, and especially to those in the Okanagan. My IT sector career began in the North Okanagan providing mapping and data analysis support for my colleagues and community members. I grew my career by joining the City of Kelowna, where I learned the value of building connections amongst community groups and between residents and their city. I am fortunate to have recently been given the opportunity to take the leap into an IT management role with the City of Penticton, where I lead a team of highly qualified IT professionals as we focus on supporting our many City Departments by building workflow efficiencies and enabling data driven decision-making. I am proud to say that I work for the City of Penticton!
