March sunshine is just a teaser

E

very year, we get a couple of “teaser weekends” in March and April, and we always seem to get caught in their deception. Weekends like these are full of lies and misdirection making promises that they have no intention of fulfilling.

We watch puffy white clouds drift lazily overhead, headed for the Interior. They casually give us the impression that they have finished dumping snow, or sleet, or continuous rain and that they are just passing by. If you listened close you can hear a disrespectful snicker as they floated up the Valley. March clouds are not to be trusted.

The wind is nothing more than a gentle rustle. There is no danger of branches falling or power outages. The only sound is a quiet whisper encouraging us to start cleaning up the yard, picking up branches and deadfall, raking the lawns, or dragging out the pressure washer. The wind looks us straight in the eye and says: “I’m done for the winter, go ahead and haul all that stuff away, sprinkle on some fertilizer and grass seed, you can get a good early start on the growing season this year.”

Lies, all lies.

The sun reaches down and massages our neck and shoulders, relieving the knots and cramps caused by being hunched in hoodies and rain jackets for the last few months.

“Doesn’t that feel good?” old Sol asks in a soft warm voice.

“You can go ahead and put those heavy coats, socks, and gloves away – you won’t need them anymore this year. Soon it will be Daylight Saving Time and I will be so much more pleasant. By the way, why don’t you take those noisy snow tires off, you won’t need them again this year. Go ahead, organize some baseball practices and soccer tournaments,

it’s time to get outside.”

What a cruel mistress that sun can be, casually yawning and stretching, promising to visit more often – when it really has no intention of coming back for days or weeks. But just like Charlie Brown running to kick that football, we believe that this year will be different and we won’t be fooled again.

So we roll up our sleeves and clean and wax and wash our houses, scour our decks and cars and trucks. We fold up sweaters and blankets, we take off our winter tires and we start digging around in flower beds, fully believing that the forces of nature have been honest with us. They watch, punching each other in the shoulder, laughing hysterically knowing that we have fallen for it once again.

Working outdoors is great therapy.

It’s great time to think, to wrestle with a challenge or a decision that’s been rolling around in your mind. As you are cutting and pruning branches you can chop off some tired old ideas, shape your thoughts so they grow in a new direction. As the tiller or the hoe turn over the weeds and pull up fresh new earth, you can yank out those ugly old habits and fears that have been holding you back.

Mowers, weedeaters, and tillers don’t talk back or give advice. They just listen as you lay out thoughts and rearrange them until you reach a decision. Usually, you already know how your situation should come out, but outside, shedding the winter, picking up the debris from the storms, planting new seeds, and encouraging growth, you can see the new path and head in the new direction. Finally winter is past.

Then, unsuspectingly, we will awaken one mid-March Wednesday morning to a dump of wet sloppy snow hanging

from the branches and covering the roads. We will hear cars slipping and spinning and we’ll search for the kids’ boots and mittens.

The wind will blow in later in the day, melting the snow, snapping branches, and make a complete mess of your yard again. The sun will be nowhere to be seen and the clouds will sit like huge bullies over top of us and refuse to move, rendering Daylight Saving Time useless.

A look at the Langley facilities that offer weather-free walking exercise for seniors D AN FERG U S O N , B L A C K P R E SS ME DI A

I

t is early in the morning and most of the stores have yet to open, but a small group of walkers – members of the Willowbrook Walking club – are getting their exercise.

“I do four kilometres a day, depending on how I feel,” the 73-year-old van den Ouden explains.

He lives near the Surrey-Langley border and has been exercising at the shopping centre for about two years.

Like other club members, van den Ouden is wearing a pass on a lanyard around his neck, so security guards know he’s allowed.

Every walker, it seems, has a different approach, with some going by the clock and walking for a set time, while others use a smart watch to count steps and some do it by distance travelled.

And some, like club coordinator Dixie Platt, base it on what their feet are telling them.

“As long as my legs hold up,” laughed Platt, 78, a Langley City resident who has been walking at Willowbrook for 11 years.

As far as current members know the club has been around just about as long as the shopping centre has.

Bonnie Caullen, 73, a Willowbrook area resident, took up indoor walking about five years ago and usually aims for about 6,000 steps, measured by her smart watch.

“I’ve got two stents and a pacemaker, and I do this seven days a week,” Caullen related.

“I like it because you’re in a group and they keep you motivated,” she added.

Platt agreed, calling walking “the cheapest and best exercise for anyone.”

Willowbrook Shopping Centre is located at 19705 Fraser Hwy., and walkers are asked to register by phoning 604-5304447 or visiting the concierge desk. It costs $10 a year.

Willowbrook is one of four Langley locations offering indoor walking.

Another exists at the Langley Events Centre (LEC).

The main concourse is open to walker most mornings – when there is no ticketed event being held.

Willoughby residents Horst and Ingeborg Lange, who are 88 and 78, are among the regulars at LEC. Horst goes at a slower pace than Ingeborg, but keeps at it until he gets at least 16 laps in.

“I had two knee replacements,” he explained.

Ingeborg is a firm believer in the value of exercise.

“Keep on walking,” she advised a visitor.

“It doesn’t matter how fast or how slow, keep moving. That’s the secret in life.”

Raymond Kleiner, 61, comes in from Clayton Heights to walk in the controlled conditions of the LEC.

A recent study conducted at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found walking and running were equally effective at managing cardiovascular health.

A University of Georgia study reported regular walking reduced elderly adults’ risk of developing a physical disability by 41 per cent, and a British study found walking 25 minutes a day added seven years to participants’ lifespans.

Other walking tracks exist at recreation facilities in Langley City and downtown Aldergrove.

Timms Community Centre in Langley City is located at 20399 Douglas Cres. It has a walking track that is open Mondays to Fridays, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sundays and holidays 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. For $10 a year per individual, walkers also get access to the centre games room. Register by bringing identification to the main reception desk.

At the Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre, situated at 27032 Fraser Hwy., admission is free, but walkers are also asked to register for a walking pass, which allow staff to track usage. It is open from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays, and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“There’s no weather to deal with, there’s no wind,” Kleiner commented.

“There’s no hills, no cars.”

Langley Events Centre, at 7888 200th St., is free to walkers and usually open between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. but hours can vary depending on other events being held. Check the LEC website or phone 604-882-8800 (extension 2) Mondays through Fridays, between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. to check availability. Running is only permitted from 6 to 8 a.m. and 8 to 10 p.m.

considered full sun. Four to six hours is partial shade. And less than four hours is classified as shade. Evaluate the space in spring or summer, after all the surrounding trees and shrubs are in full leaf, and choose plants appropriate for the amount of light available.

Outdoor container gardens for apartment dwellers are much easier if you use self-watering containers with reservoirs that hold enough water to keep the soil moist without constant attention. Outdoor containers, particularly those in full sun, dry out quickly on hot days and may need watering more than once a day in the heat of summer. With a self-watering container, you don’t have to arrange your life around a watering schedule.

Patios and balconies are ideal places for plants.

If you do not have adequate space for a vegetable garden, consider growing these crops in containers. Almost any vegetable that can be grown in a garden will work well as a container-grown plant.

Vegetables normally suited for growing in containers include: tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, potatoes, beans, lettuce, carrots, and radishes. Most vine crops, such as squash and cucumbers also do well in containers. Generally, compact varieties are the better choices for growing in containers. Bush beans, for example, thrive well in this type of environment and look ■ 10

quite attractive when arranged with other container crops.

Learn to make the most of your indoor gardening space by choosing plants that grow well in a variety of different locations. Reserve bright windowsills for flowering plants that need lots of sun. Plants with bright or variegated foliage, such as polka dot plant and croton, develop the best colour near a bright window, but out of direct light.

Hanging baskets are a great way to display trailing plants, and it leaves tabletops free for plants that are best seen at or below eye level. Small trees add tranquility and tropical appeal to an indoor setting. Keep in mind that palms can’t be pruned back. Palms grow slowly, and if you choose small specimens, you’ll save money and enjoy them for several years.

Urban gardening in apartments should be a pleasure, not a chore.

If you are short of time, you’ll have lots of lovely plants to choose from that need very little attention. If you want a challenge, you’ll find plenty of plants that fill that need, too.

Above all, choose plants that thrive in your apartment garden conditions, look good, fit well in the space, and appeal to you.

You don’t have to leave the garden behind.

As the old adage goes: Gardening adds years to your life and life to your years.

ll the brand new buttons, screens, gadgets, and gizmos populating the planet these days can be confusing for folks of any age, let alone senior citizens who grew up well before the home computer went mainstream.

Keeping up with the latest changes in tech advancements is daunting. But Linda Fawcus, founder of the Gluu Technology Society, said it’s a must to staying connected and to even staying healthy.

“The digital world is totally open to seniors.

Without skills, they’ll be living in the dark ages of the ’80s,” Fawcus said. “You don’t have to wait for holidays like Mother’s Day to get a call from your family anymore – with FaceTime and smart home

“I’m working on head set right now for our dementia clients, but haven’t really launched it yet as we are having a bit of trouble with our network,” Brown explained. “I believe this will benefit our dementia clients – to calm them in a relaxing atmosphere.”

Brown said some of the video shown ranges from sea life to skies – but a new technology, similar to Google Maps, is also allowing users to re-visit cities and old neighbourhoods.

“People with dementia remember specifics, like the farm they grew up on outside Winnipeg, but not short-term things,” Brown said. “This technology can eventually allow them to see places they remember through the headset.”

The senior tech boom doesn’t stop there either.

Hearing aids such as the Oticon ConnectClipsor or the Phonak ComPilot can now connect to Bluetooth devices, allowing people to have a full telephone conversation without a receiver against their cheek.

devices, it has opened up the possibilities of how people talk to each other.”

Gluu is a Canadian non-profit, with locations in Langley, that help teach seniors how to operate new technologies in a classroom setting.

Fawcus said the idea came to her after her 82-year-old mother was gifted an iPhone.

“She couldn’t remember how to find the home button.

I said ‘Mom, I’ve told you dozens to times already,’ but then I thought, hold on, I’m in the tech business,” Fawcus recounted. “If we slow down and take the time to really show seniors how to use technology, they can live longer, happier lives, in the home they want to be in.”

With the idea of making tech support stick, Fawcus said repetition and printed notes have proved to be successful methods.

The Gluu founder advised that seniors should get away from “monitors at dusty desk areas,” and use a tablet – a device with a larger screen that can be brought to a variety of different settings, as well as more comfortable locations.

Technological advancements are also going well beyond the communication and mental health front, and into groundbreaking new ways related to physical well being.

Kelly Brown, program director at Langley Senior Resource Centre’s adult day program, said they are experimenting with virtual reality to help people with dementia.

While online medical records have made health care in itself a faster and easier process, Fawcus acknowledged the recent LifeLabs data breach, which she saw caused some hesitancy is many seniors.

“We can’t stop the process but we we are able to help people navigate through these problems when they occur,” she said. “Meeting face-to-face with your doctor over an app is coming soon, which will make is easy for seniors to have appointments.”

Operating systems (OS) such as Google Home and Alexa have also made it easier for people to perform just about any action from playing music to following a recipe.

While medication reminders and hands-free helps commands such as Life Alert can easily be programmed, Fawcus said she is hesitant to recommend OS products.

“We do not recommend them, because the intention there is not to help – but to track data and sell products later,” Fawcus claims, pointing to Apple as the most security-focused company.

Personal preferences and affordability are both factors she said should be taken into account, but the bottomline is that people are living longer – a fact that can be attributed to improvements in countless technological fields.

It’s nearly impossible to say what the future has in store for people getting up there in years; but resources are out there, whether it’s a health improvement device or a class for modern communication.

Simply, it’s now up to the user to decide when, where, and how they make use of what technology is available in our day and age.

Memories come alive in the music J IM MCGRE G O R

W

hen Mardie Wolsey starts crooning out his selection of tunes from the 40’, 50’s and 60’s, the smiles appear and the toes start tapping and soon the audience is singing along.

“My performances bring as much joy to me as they do to the people I’m singing to. I love the effect the tunes and words have on the residents and the memories they bring back,” says Mardie.

Music was a big part of life in Mardie’s home growing up.

His Mom and Dad were musical and all the kids sang all the time. “We sang in the kitchen and on car rides, it was just the thing to do. We always had music around us.

Mardie was a veteran of the stage and about seven years ago he started performing at seniors’ residences throughout the lower mainland. “ I started a full group many years ago, then dance bands, a couple of rock bands, then after we moved here from Alberta I performed with a group called Drama Trix and we did musical mystery theatre, mostly on the paddle wheeler operating out of New West until that business folded.”

With all the experience under his belt having played with groups with exotic names like Mint Julip, The Southlanders and Night Express, Mardie was finding his day job in banking and insurance a bit lacking. “We had performed all over Alberta and B.C, did a lot of travelling in those early years and played some pretty interesting places.”

“After the paddle wheel shows shut down, I decided to go a solo route and bought a sound system and began collecting tunes of the Karaoke variety so I could get original accompaniment that I could add my voice to. Now I can buy songs from iTunes or Spotify and with my sound equipment it’s like having a full band backing me up. I enjoy telling the stories behind the songs, give them the history.”

“When I was just a kid, my Dad would take me with him to nursing homes to visit his father’s friends, relatives or his old school teachers. I was always fascinated by old timer’s stories, they have so much to share. So when I decided to get back into music I knew I wanted to share the old songs with our seniors.”

“When I break out those songs I see it makes them come alive.

I rented a video from the library called Alive Inside, about the effect of music on Alzheimer’s patients. These researchers have supplied over 5000 iPods to patients and they’ve seen some people who have not spoken for a year come alive to the music.” Studies have shown that music therapy can

save billions of dollars a year as a alternative treatment for depression and other physical and mental afflictions.

Mardie regularly hears from his audience after a program and they say, “Mardie you have no idea how much joy you have brought into this room today, we used to dance to those songs, we made love to that song, they bring back so many memories.”

Guild not sheepish about love of fibre art

nn Embree and her husband, Maurice, moved to South Langley more than three decades ago, “so I could have lots of animals,” she said.

“I’ve done just about everything, except tapestry,” Embree said.

“He said ‘You spend so much money on wool. Surely it’s cheaper to grow your own’,” Ann recalled with a chuckle. “He came to regret that.”

For her and other members of the guild, the pleasure comes from having skills to make beautiful and useful objects.

That was not always the case for those involved in weaving and spinning in centuries past, when people had to make the cloth before they could make their own clothing and household linens.

The short answer is 'no.' It’s not cheaper to have sheep to provide wool, but the long-time member of the Langley Weavers and Spinners Guild wouldn’t give up her flock.

“I have such an advantage over our great grandmothers and great, great grandmothers who had to weave every piece of cloth their family used,” she said.

She enjoys being involved in the entire process of creating fibre, right from daily feedings and care of her sheep, through to having the expert sheep shearer visit in the spring, and the cleaning, carding, spinning, and dying – not to mention the making of the end product.

Embree, who is in her 70s, said her weaving, and spinning, and knitting, can be focused on what gives her joy and results in the creation of items she wants or needs – not for survival but for enjoyment. Being in the guild allows her to socialize with those who have similar fibre-loving addictions.

Members of the guild have different interests, but what binds them together is the interest in fibre arts, she said.

“Members swap fibre,” she explained. “We like to joke that we are all great enablers.”

Her interests include weaving (her home studio has looms ranging from petite to one the size of a small sedan that uses a computer to create designs).

Embree comes from a long line of fibre artists, still owning a coverlet made in the 1800s by a family member. She said some of the guild members believe spinning and weaving are inherited interests passed down through the family.

And Ann was a knitter so Maurice, now deceased, had a suggestion to save a bit of money.

Her spinning wheel collection includes antiques – that she still uses – right up to modern variations that can be loaded into the car and used for demonstrations, such as when the guild meets at the Langley City library on the first Thursday ■ 16

whether for clothing, linens or bedding. When they no longer served their original function, cloth would be repurposed until there was little left.

That’s a very different perspective than today with the age of fast fashion.

“We live in an era of disposable good,” Embree lamented. “We don’t really have a sense of how really important and valuable [fibre] was.”

The guild has about 100 members, ranging in age from the late 20s to more than 90 years of age. In addition to meeting monthly (except for Christmas and summer), the guild also hosts an annual fibre arts show and sale at West Langley Hall on the first weekend of November.

Members are currently collaborating on a coverlet that will be raffled a couple of months before the show and sale. Members will make small pieces that will be assembled into the coverlet.

“It’s greater than the sum of its parts,” she commented.

The show and sale sees the guild invite in other local artisans with the wares that they’ve made, including jewelry, leather goods, and sheepskin items. Embree explained that the show and sale is juried to ensure high quality.

The guild’s monthly meetings are at 7:30 p.m. in the United Churches of Langley in Murrayville, 21562 Old Yale Rd., on the third Thursday of the month, but there’s also smaller groups that meet based on their varying interests. People in the guild are at all skill levels and there’s no requirement to join other than interest.

“They just have to have an interest in fibre,” she said. “And we don’t care if you’ve never woven before or spun before.”

She added the guild prides itself on being a group with a focus on teaching and helping each other. Meetings include instruction and presentations. Memberships are $30 annually and people are invited to attend meetings to see if the group is the right fit.

No love loss for leakage of urine and bladder infections

Many women suffer with bladder infections after they have gone through menopause.

T

he reason for this is that with menopause comes a reduction in estrogen in the urogenital tract (bladder, vagina, urethra, labia). So not only will women get recurrent bladder infections, they may also experience vaginal dryness and/or leakage of urine.

The syndrome is called genitourinary syndrome of menopause, and it affects most women after menopause.

There is real danger for women who have this syndrome, especially after the age of 65. If a woman over the age of 65 gets a urinary tract infection, she is at risk for urosepsis (an overwhelming multi-organ infection), hospitalization, and even early death.

At any time in life, if women experience vaginal dryness, they will need to moisturize their vagina either with a hormone-free personal moisturizer or if they have leakage or get bladder infections, they will need low dose localized estrogen therapy after being treated with antibiotics.

It takes two to three months for localized estrogen to optimize, so it’s important to use a supplement to prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs). Now there’s a UTI control supplement that is a highly concentrated cranberry extract, which contains the clinically proven dosage of 36mg of Proanthocyanidins (PACs) and is Health Canada approved.

This cranberry supplement can help prevent UTIs, whether a woman is menopausal or not.

For the leakage of urine component of genitourinary syndrome of menopause, there’s lots of treatments from increasing water-based fluids (I know, it counter-intuitive).

Langley Residents are Enjoying a Rare Eclipse - In Politics

J

ust like a solar eclipse, which blocks out the sun, this political eclipse has for a brief time blocked out the worst features of party politics. Why? For one of the very few times in history, the federal and provincial governments are both in minority positions. At the local level, party politics has been in disfavour for more than 20 years and seems very unlikely to make a return on either Langley Township or Langley City council, or the Langley Board of Education.

The B.C. government has very rarely been in a minority position. There was a lot of instability in the first 30 years after B.C. joined Canada in 1871, largely due to the fact that there were no political parties. After 1903, minority governments hardly ever happened - and they never lasted long.

The current NDP minority government has been unusually stable. May will mark three years since the election, and the government took office in July 2017. It is quite likely to reach its three-year anniversary.

The stability is due to a confidence and supply agreement signed by NDP and Green MLAs. The agreement still stands, and even though Green Party leader Andrew Weaver has stepped down from that post and is now an independent MLA, he says he is still bound by it. If he or another NDP or Green MLA were to resign their seat, and a BC Liberal MLA is elected, that could end the agreement. The Green Party is now in the midst of a leadership race and its outcome could also affect the agreement, if the new leader turns her or his back on it.

In Ottawa, the Liberals now have a minority government and are starting to discover that things don’t go all your way when more MPs in the House of Commons come from other parties. Minority governments at the federal level have been common since 1957 - there have been no fewer than nine of them since that year.

Each MP has more power, and every vote counts. MPs are not the “nobodies” that Pierre Trudeau derisively referred to them as - not when the governing party needs every vote.

A lot has been accomplished under minority governments in Ottawa. Among those achievements are Medicare, the Canadian flag, the first woman to hold a federal cabinet

portfolio and inclusion of First Nations people on the voters list. In more recent years, the two Stephen Harper minority governments brought in Tax-Free Savings Accounts.

Seniors have generally benefited from minority governments.

Prime ministers and premiers want to keep every vote their parties gained and add to those totals, so generally will not bring in policies that are overly punitive. A good example of this came under the first minority government of John Diefenbaker. He was elected in 1957, giving the Progressive Conservatives their first time in office in 22 years. One of the early acts of his government was to boost old age pensions (now OAS). At that time, it was the only money remitted to seniors by the federal government, as the Canada Pension Plan did not exist. That came later, from another minority government - the Liberals under Lester Pearson.

The current NDP provincial government under John Horgan has ended Medical Service Plan premiums. While these were paid by everyone over a certain income level, the bills often hit seniors a little harder, as many working people had their premiums at least partially paid by employers.

What about local governments? The three local governments have usually been fairly free of party or slate politics. However, from 1996-99 the Langley Leadership Team controlled both Township council and the school board.

Even though much was accomplished, many Langley residents did not like the more confrontational tone that emerged in local politics. The LLT lost its majority in 1999 and was history after 2002. A rival slate, Langley Citizens Coalition, didn’t do well in the 1999 election either. Since 2002, every council and school board member elected has been an independent. While many independents have worked together on a number of issues, the local governments reflect a variety of views of citizens. A council or school board member’s vote is not always predictable.

Enjoy the eclipse of parties while it lasts. It won’t last at the federal or provincial level. It does seem quite likely that independents will continue to be elected to the three local governments in the foreseeable future.

W

inter in the Pacific Northwest brings with it lots of rain and some snow, making it a good time to stay indoors where it’s warm and dry.

Unfortunately, the inclement weather can also lead to higher heating and electricity bills, as well as a risk of flooding or water damage.

Having a “rainy day” fund provides a buffer against these sorts of financial burdens. So, this month I’d like to discuss a few quick budget and savings tips that everyone can use to minimize the risk and financial impact of rising costs or unexpected repair bills.

As of Jan. 1, every Canadian 18 years or older has another $6,000 in tax-free savings account room available to them.

The tax-free savings account, or TFSA, is an excellent place to hold your “rainy day” funds for unexpected emergencies.

Money in the TFSA can grow or earn interest, tax free, and

funds withdrawn from the TFSA are not taxable.

This means that your emergency savings can compound taxfree while they are invested and won’t increase your taxable income if you have to draw on them to fix that leaky roof.

The total contribution limit for anyone who has been eligible since the TFSAs inception in 2009 is $69,500.

Being trapped inside due to foul weather is also a good excuse to do a little preventative maintenance to hopefully avoid the need to dip into your savings unexpectedly.

Check the hoses on your washing machine for loose connections to avoid leaks, and check the dryer vent flap to make sure it’s not sticking open due to lint or malfunction.

A stuck dryer flap can be a major source of heat loss and a potential entry point for pests. A simple check to make sure yours is working properly could save you up to $120 annually in heating costs.

January saw the delivery of the latest property assessment notice, which of course, is used to determine your property taxes. If you are 55 and older, or a surviving spouse of any age, you can defer part or all of your property taxes on your principle residence, with interest, until the property is sold.

This can defer thousands of dollars in taxes, freeing up that cash flow to top up your budget or your “rainy day” fund.

A rainy day can also be a good time to create or review a family inventory, which is a collection of all the important information pertaining to your family that can assist with planning and tracking your financial and estate goals.

An up-to-date inventory will prove invaluable to your surviving heirs, executors, and advisors. It will also help you to step back and look at your overall financial situation to ensure you have considered all aspects of your financial affairs.

For low income seniors, there is also the Home Adaptations for Independence program in the form of up to a $20,000 forgivable loan to help eligible seniors or their landlords finance modifications to improve accessibility, safety, and independent living.

Finally, I wouldn’t be much of a financial advisor if I didn’t encourage you to use the dreary winter months to review your finances.
