Revelry Photo Booth owner-operator Melanie Coulter, points out that their photo booth encourages guests to ‘loosen their ties’ and even ‘kick off their shoes’ for some fun photos. “We capture everything from glamorous to hilarious!” she says. “Our modern take on the photo booth is so popular at events it often has a line-up. Which is fine because it gives guests time to choose props and accessories to add to their snapshots.” Guests receive a physical image in hand as well as digital images via text or email to share right away. “It’s really instant gratification. DJ Russell Ball, of AudioXcellence DJ Services, has been working events and special occasions for over 25 years. “Our goal is to cater our music to the crowd, weddings are usually inter-generational celebrations so very often we are playing music from several different genres, that way everyone is part of the fun,” he says. Ball recommends that couples connect with the DJ or band prior to the reception to ensure that key songs are always ready for those special moments like the entrance, first dance, flower toss, etc. “Most entertainers will accommodate requests as best they can. Your personal taste will likely have a lot to do with you what kind of meal service you decide on for your wedding day. We’ve selected some options, along with points to consider to help you make the best choice for your day.

BUFFET A buffet style dinner features long tables with a variety of choices and guests serve themselves from the line. Servers replenish the food as needed and sometimes put portions on the guests plate. This is a less formal mode of dining. You can try everything! Pros: A variety of choices means there’s something for everyone. Social & relaxed. Can be a budget-friendly option. Special Considerations: May be challenging for the very elderly and can take some time for all the guests to pass through the line. Difficult to accommodate allergies or special diets.

FAMILY STYLE

This dinner service is the most formal option. Guests are seated and served, course by course, by the service staff. It is a traditional and well known style that’s that highlights your guests comfort. Like having dinner in a fancy restaurant!

Family style service is currently on trend, offering a relaxed & slightly less formal dinner service option. Staff serve guests with large platters, placed on each table for guests to serve themselves. Just like having dinner with your family!

Pros: A very customized dining experience.

Pros: Encourages socializing, great for getting your guests to mingle.

Elegant & sophisticated. Your guests will feel pampered and it can be especially nice for older guests. Special Considerations: Requires a high level of planning as guests need to preorder their menu selection and additionally requires a comprehensive seating plan. Food costs may be less because the caterer will know how much to prepare ahead of time, service costs may be higher if more staff is needed to attend guests. 12

Fun & trendy. Your guests get table service while less service staff is required (compared to plated service). Special Considerations: Platters may require rentals (check with your caterer), and you may want to let your decorator know so they ensure the table décor can accommodate space for platters.

COCKTAIL or HORS D’OEUVRES SERVICE A contemporary trend, a cocktail-style reception features small bites offered for a couple hours. A combination of hot and cold appetizers can be passed by servers or at stations for guests to help themselves. A sophisticated and festive way to dine! Pros: Guests can socialize and move about the room while snacking. Casually elegant. An opportunity to offer a varied and creative selection of appetizers. Special Considerations: May be challenging to satisfy big eaters and may be confusing for older guests expecting a sit-down dinner. Can be more difficult to schedule formal speeches and for guests to view have a good view of things like the first dance.

he day of your wedding is likely to be jam-packed from morning until night. With good planning and a little luck it will be a magical ride that goes by in a blur. Thankfully, your photographer will be there to focus their lens on those special moments that pass so quickly. Top wedding photographer, Erin Wallis, gives us a ‘snapshot’ of her best advice for getting the perfect pictures. “Choose your photographer carefully, spend sometime looking at different styles of photography so you know what speaks to you,” said Wallis. “Then spend some time on their Instagram page, look deeper than the number of followers they have, and try to get a feel for how they approach being a part of this special day. Be sure to review their portfolio to see how it compares with your ideal, you should love what you see!” Photos that give you an emotional response are a very good sign; that usually means the photographer has a talent for capturing feeling as well as image. Reach out to the photographer to make sure you have a genuine and warm rapport.

“Read reviews to see how other couples felt about the experience. Your photographer will be up close and personal with you all day, among other things they will be there for some intimate moments, you need to feel comfortable with their presence,” said Wallis. “Trust is a key component in attaining the shots that are unguarded and profound.”

Once you’ve made your choice, be assured there’s still work to be done. Communicating your needs should be part of that. Let your photographer know what you are hoping for in terms of key shots. “Then ask them for their input,” said Wallis. “They will be able to advise on how much time is needed for family and wedding party photos. They can suggest the best time of day for light and may even have location ideas. “This will help you prepare an itinerary and make the most of your time with them.” With all their wedding experience, your photographer can be an excellent resource. “They will likely have trusted colleagues and industry professionals that they have worked with and that they know will deliver amazing results on your wedding day,” said Wallis. “You want to create a dream team of talented experts around you who will be on time, prepared, highly experienced, and who will bring good energy to contribute to the overall flow of the day.” Now that you’ve done all that you can, Wallis’s final suggestion is to enjoy yourself. “Trust that everything is in place for a fantastic day and let go of any stress you may be carrying,” she said. “Stay in the moment and savour each minute and your photographs will reflect that feeling.” Looking back on your wedding really should be a magical ride!

We love being a part of the celebration!” Orr said there are certain guidelines to follow, for best results. “Definitely do book a trial appointment, this is the opportunity to make sure your look is exactly what you want.” She urges clients to spend some time collecting images that reflect their taste and to bring at least three of them to their appointment. That’s a big question, and the first one that Christina Leaman of Christina Leaman Wedding & Event Design asks couples. “While many of my clients have some idea of what they are looking for others aren’t sure where to start,” said Leaman. “Spending some time getting to know them and understanding their story, regardless of where they are in the process of planning their wedding, is the first step in getting the picture of what they want for this major life event. The success of crafting a design that genuinely represents them depends on that understanding of their vision.” Colours, themes, and mood are just a few of the many elements that go into creating the overall atmosphere and look of the event. “There are so many practical details to be

considered, it can be overwhelming for a couple,” Leaman said. “Another aspect of my service is to assist them in this facet of the planning and reduce some of the stress that can come from juggling all the parts of the décor.” Leaman is an industry veteran, adept in floral arrangement and wedding design. She works all over Vancouver Island and while not providing rentals herself, she works closely with local event rental companies. Tessa Stover, owner of All In One Party Shop, with locations in the Comox Valley and Campbell River, has more than 25 years of experience in both design and rental services. She and her team know that the magic of the day is a combination of creativity and practical planning.

Anderson said it’s difficult for her choose a favourite design component because clients and styles vary so greatly. For instance, lighting choices can range from chandeliers hung in trees to contemporary coloured orbs on the ceiling. “I think the important thing is the fun of finding out what excites people and the different ways we can work with them to create atmosphere and mood with décor.”

WHERE THEY MET.

THE LOCATION.

Viennamay: We met at work six years ago. We had a lot in common but were just friends at first.

Viennamay: We spent a whole summer hiking every waterfall on Vancouver Island that we could find.

Caleb: I thought she was hilarious... and fiery.

Caleb: At first we couldn’t find this one we had heard about, off Sombrio Beach near Port Renfrew, and it was raining so we almost gave up.

Viennamay: I think I developed feelings first.

THE PROPOSAL. Caleb: We spend a lot of time in the outdoors, so I wanted to revisit some of the places in the neighbourhood where we like to walk and where we’ve had meaningful conversations or just fun together. Viennamay: He had hidden letters in all these special spots we’d been to and as we walked he gave me hints to find the next one, each one said something lovely about our time together. Caleb: I wanted her to know how much she means to me before I formally proposed.

Viennamay: We asked a lady that we ran into for directions; she told us to take a special rock that we found along the way as a gift to the waterfall. Caleb: Eventually we found it, a little ways up a brook, in a slot canyon. Viennamay: Just as we reached the waterfall, the sun broke through the clouds and we knew it was the place.

THE WEDDING. Caleb: We had a small wedding party of our most intimate friends and family. They hiked with us to this amazing place. Viennamay: At the last minute my Nana and Dampa decided they were going to come. My Nana had recently been diagnosed with leukemia and it was doubtful that she would be well enough to make the trip. Caleb: Both Viennamay and I were so grateful for their presence; they have been so supportive and having them there meant the world to us. Viennamay: Every single one of our guests was integral to our ceremony and each of them contributed time, and energy, and love to the ceremony. Some things are just magical and the day was one of those things.

Hitched sat down with wedding planner Levi Smith of Smithco Events for a Q & A.

Smith: I’d say I’m going to execute an organized and well thought-out plan in order to avoid any potentially disruptive issues; however, in unforeseen circumstances, if necessary, I am the scrambler. My intent is that I scramble so well that the couple is unaware scrambling even happened.

Hitched: Ok, I guess my first question should be - how do couples know if they should use a wedding planner or not?

Hitched: What is the most important thing you carry on the day of a wedding?

Hitched: Best advice for couples planning their own wedding?

Smith: Good question and of course I’m going to say they definitely should work with a wedding planner! I know that DIY weddings are very common - that’s where the couple takes care of most of the planning themselves - and they usually turn out beautifully, but I can guarantee that somewhere in that process there will be some incredibly stressful parts and there is always some last minute scrambling.

Smith: My wedding bible, it’s a binder with everything I need from time line to phone numbers, every detail is in there. To be honest though, zip ties, scissors, an emergency playlist, sewing kit, and mints have all come in handy as well.

Hitched: Tell me how much you love weddings? Smith: (laughs) Am I that obvious? What about me is giving me away? Hitched: Ummm, your incredibly huge smile.

Hitched: So you do the scrambling?

Hitched: Is hiring a wedding planner costly? I know weddings can already be expensive. Smith: There’s so many options on how involved I can get in the process

Smith: Don’t spread yourself too thin, have a solid time line and delegate! Bring a sense of humour and know that no matter what happens your day is going to be fabulous! Hitched: Anything else? Smith: Yes, call me! The consultation is free and I do love weddings!

e are definitely proud to be a part of the communities’ everyday life,” says Katie Pierini, head cake decorator at the Crowne Isle location in Courtenay. “So it’s an absolute thrill when one of our customers comes in and involves us with their wedding.” Pierini has been in the bakery department for 25 years and works with couples to create custom cakes for their weddings. “I like to meet in person and get an idea of their overall theme and colours. Often they will bring in some ideas they’ve found online or in magazines and then we go from there.” The bakery department accommodates everything from smaller gatherings to weddings that have upwards of 300 guests and can also provide a variety of tasty treats including cup cakes, chocolate dipped strawberries and dessert platters. “Our staff is very experienced and able to produce a beautiful product at a reasonable price,” says Pierini. “Additionally, we deliver to the location and myself or one of my colleagues always accompanies the cake to make sure it arrives safely and is set up correctly, so the couple has one less thing to think about on their day.”

Mindful of relieving stress for her clients, Pierini also coordinates with other departments inside Thrifty’s, around delivery. For example, we offer a $1,000 in-store credit to couples that register with us.” Growing in popularity is the destination or the adventure travel registry. Planning your dream vacation is a lovely way for guests to contribute to something memorable that celebrates your union. Jaime Murcheson at Flight Centre agrees. “Destination honeymoons are wildly popular. People love being part of a gift

Buying a home may be the largest purchase you make in your lifetime. Like marriage, it’s a big commitment, not to be entered into lightly. A good real estate agent will help with this momentous occasion and walk you down the sidewalk to a new home. Here’s a few tips from top agents to consider before you tie the knot and get the keys to your new home.

Make a list of all the features in a home that are important to you, then rate them from most to least important. Think of it like a grocery list. We all know what can happen if we go shopping when we’re hungry

- we can end up with a basket full of things that we normally wouldn’t buy. Keep your list with you when you are looking at homes. It’s easy to fall in love with an amazingly landscaped yard and expertly staged house but if

it doesn’t have the covered garage and the extra room for an office you listed as priorities you will need time to consider this. Not to say your priorities can’t change but your list will help to keep you grounded.

Consider your lifestyle as an important factor when you are looking. How far away - or close - do you want to be to work, schools, shopping, beaches, mountain bike trails? If you want to cycle or walk most places then looking at rural properties might mean you are in your car more than you want to be. One of the things that can affect your lifestyle but is not often considered is maintenance of your outdoor property. A mature garden and fabulous landscaping can be attractive but it can be a surprise how many hours of year-round maintenance are required to keep it looking that way.

Know your limit and stay within it. This is a hard one, it’s tempting to take a peek at homes that maybe a little over your price range. Try to stay realistic about your comfort level and remember that things like

repairs and maintenance and property taxes are costs that should be part of your projected budget. Getting preapproved by connecting with a bank or mortgage broker is the best way to avoid getting in too deep.

Keep an open mind when viewing homes that may need a little work. There’s a big difference between something that needs a cosmetic fix and ones that need major repair. Don’t let yourself be turned off by a bad paint job in a bedroom or a cluttered living room. Make an effort to look past those things and imagine the space empty and neutral. It’s easy to miss a gem because it’s hasn’t been presented well. Likewise pay attention to kitchens and bathrooms, those two spaces are the most expensive to upgrade; if you can’t live with them as they are consider the costs of renovating them.

Investigate the neighbourhood. Take a drive around the area at different times of day and on the weekends. It’s a good way to get an impression of the area and also things like traffic that you may not have noticed at your viewing. It’s one thing to view a house on a Sunday morning when there is very little activity on the streets but what is it like on a Friday evening? Go to your local city office, are there any big plans or changes coming up in the vicinity? You can’t really get to know a neighbourhood before you live there but you can get a general feel for a possible fit.

Most importantly, before you tender an offer, make sure you’ve got that ‘loving feeling.’ You will be with your new home for a long time; it takes something special to make it a perfect match! W I N T ER 2020 | HITCHED MAGAZINE
