There will be one fewer West Coast Express trains running into Vancouver for the next while, but the remaining four trains will have extra cars to make up for the loss.

TransLink said Monday that one of the locomotives has an electrical problem that has resulted in the 5:35 a.m. train being cancelled from Wednesday to Friday last week, as well as this Monday, and until further notice.

Nevertheless, the remaining four westbound trains running into Vancouver in the morning will keep to their usual schedule with departures from Mission at 5:55 a.m., 6:25 a.m., 6:55 a.m. and 7:25 a.m., but instead will have 10 cars, instead of the usual eight.

In addition, the second eastbound train leaving Waterfront station in Vancouver at 4:20 p.m., also will be cancelled, until further notice.

I

f your washing machine breaks down and you’re four and a half hours away on a gravel road from the nearest town, what do you do?

What if you just want to grab a coffee and chat for a few minutes, except that you can’t, because there is no store, coffee shop or mall of any kind, literally nowhere to go, in the isolated First Nations reserves in western Canada.

Thought about getting a driver’s licence?

How do you do that if you’re so far into the wilderness, it takes a day to get a motor vehicle office?

Maple Ridge resident Denise Trottier learned that firsthand this fall after visiting three northern reserves, hours away on dirt roads in sub-arctic Canada.

From an outsider’s perspective, Trottier said that poverty would be the first thing people would notice, and it would seem like you’re no longer in Canada.

“When you travel in these communities, it is typical to see small houses, with boarded windows that cannot be fixed due to lack of funds, gravel roads, no sidewalks, no street lights.”

She said most communities have one store, but there’s generally no other businesses.

Yet, “I think we’ve never met more amazing people,” Trottier said Friday.

She added that she can’t imagine how challenging it is to live where the nearest town is four and a half hours away on a gravel road.

“And yet, they do.

“I feel like everyone needs to understand what this is like in our own country,” she said.

“If everyone knew, I know that they would want to help. This is right here.

It’s in our back yards.”

After visiting a total of eight reserves

by this spring, the project will have selected 15 students to take part in a month-long entrepreneurship program at the Mission Friendship Centre this June in Mission.

Students will be flown in and provid-

ed accommodation to take a monthlong crash course in small business, based on a course developed by the Martin Family Initiative, started by former prime minister Paul Martin.

At the end of the course, graduates

will have a business plan to take back to their reserves to start a business and improve life for them and the community.

Trottier said the intent is for residents to learn business skills then bring back their ideas to the reserve.

Most people don’t want to leave, she added.

“Basically, we’re trying to start some sort of economic development and let them be self-sufficient, all at the same time,” Trottier said.

One of the strategies for starting is the “business in a box” concept, where empty shipping containers can be trucked into a reserve and then converted into a small business premise.

So far, they’ve been to George Gordon First Nation, in northern Saskatchewan, Tootinaowaziibeeng Treaty Reserve, in Manitoba, and Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (Southend) reserve in northern Saskatchewan.

This week, they’re going to Leq’a mel First Nation, near Deroche.

An RBC Foundation grant helps pay for the trips.

Ballantyne said he wants to help places where he came from.

“I want to give back to northern communities … because I got an opportunity so I know what it’s like being on a reserve,” Ballantyne said.

“Some people are comfortable on a reserve, but some people want to leave, so it’s kind of the reason why I do this is to give back and give an opportunity in any way that I can.”

He said it’s a big change to leave a reserve in northern Manitoba to spend a month in Mission.

“They’re only here for a month which won’t be too long but it will also be a test for them. The bright side is that they actually get to go back home,” Ballantyne said.

Ballantyne left his own reserve of Montreal Lake Cree Nation, an hour north of Prince Albert, to join the Bird’s Nest program in 2016 and which helped bring First Nations kids to Maple Ridge to upgrade their education.

The public will have to sit through until the end of each Maple Ridge council meeting before putting questions to elected officials after the latter tweaked the procedure bylaw last week.

As well, politicians or anyone attending a meeting, will have to use the titles “coun-

cillor” or “mayor” when addressing someone on council, while they also won’t be allowed to speak negatively about the character of a councillor or staffer, or to speak or act aggressively towards a councillor or staffer or question the motives of a councillor or staffer.

The changes are part of several revisions to Maple Ridge council’s procedure bylaw, a document that dates from 2007.

Two Maple Ridge women charged in 2017 with illegally conducting a lottery or game of chance had their charges stayed in Port Coquitlam pro-

vincial court.

Chrystal Lee Lyons, born in 1973, had been facing four such charges, while Esther Ayshia Vandenbrink, born in 1962, had been charged with one count.

According to B.C. prosecution service spokesperson Dan McLaughlin, the decision to stay the charges in May was made after further information was received by the Crown prosecutor.

“After reviewing this information, and the rest of the file materials, the prosecutor concluded the charge-approval standard could no longer be met. In these circumstances, a stay of proceedings is the appropriate course of action,” McLaughlin said Thursday.

The standard requires that there be a substantial likelihood of conviction.

The charges were connected to a “cloud gifting” scheme,

according to a Coquitlam RCMP press release in July 2018. Police said then that typically, new members must pay a gift fee of between $1,000 and $5,000, to join the group, after being invited by friends and acquaintances.

New members are then required to recruit more people until they reach the top of the pyramid and share in a $40,000 birthday gift payoff, police said.

Story from front Cheryl, who has owned the business with her husband George since 1993, is emotional about closing.

She is going to miss all the friends she has made over the years, and said the store is closing for a variety of reasons.

One is because of store closures in the downtown Maple Ridge mall.

Currently, there are nine vacancies in the mall.

Kin’s Farm Market and Black Bond Books have vacated the mall along with Rexall Drugstore. The latter’s space is now occupied by Big Box Outlet Store. Other spaces remain vacant.

“When stores close in the mall, then traffic dies, and when traffic dies, sales die,” said Cheryl.

Another reason why Blue Line is closing is that the mall increased hours until 7 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Cheryl lives in Coquitlam and

didn’t want to be arriving home at almost 8 p.m. each night.

Online shopping was also detrimental to her business. She said Blue Line couldn’t compete with huge companies like Amazon.

Her husband had been asking her to let the store go for the past couple of years, but Cheryl had resisted.

She wasn’t ready to say goodbye.

But last year, the store was hitting the family financially and they decided to stay open for one more Christmas season.

At one time, Cheryl said, there were 14 Blue Line Sports stores across the Lower Mainland. The one in Maple Ridge is the last.

“We were the first one and now we’re the last one. It’s sad to see,” she said.

Cheryl is trying to unload all of her remaining inventory. Everything in the store is 50 to 70 per cent off.

As for what’s next, Cheryl doesn’t know.

“Change is always hard, but it’s also good.”

Few clouds on Horgan’s horizon P

remier John Horgan is well into his third year of governing. He must occasionally pinch himself, finding it hard to believe that his minority government is still in power.

Horgan is a realist. He has said on a number of occasions recently that the minority NDP government, propped up by three Green MLAs, is not counting on a full term.

The next election is scheduled for Oct. 16, 2021.

The most likely challenge comes from former Green Party leader Andrew Weaver.

B.C. Views Without his signature on Frank Bucholtz a confidence and supply agreement, Horgan would not be premier.

Weaver has resigned as Green Party leader and has left the party’s caucus to sit as an independent.

This is not due to a disagreement with the party.

It is primarily an issue of principle.

He has said he remains bound by the agreement. The only way his new status becomes a challenge is if he resigns his seat.

There have been rumours that he could give up his Oak Bay-Gordon Head seat to return to teaching at the University of Victoria.

Some suggest he will wait until the Green Party elects a new leader, and if that leader is not Cowichan Valley MLA Sonia Furstenau, he or she will need a seat.

Adam Olsen, the other Green MLA, is serving as interim leader and isn’t running for the permanent position.

It’s interesting speculation, but Weaver is his own master and plays the game of politics quite differently.

There is little likelihood of any NDP MLA stepping down. Surrey Panorama MLA Jinny Sims has left the cabinet and is under investigation, but it seems unlikely that will lead to her resignation as an MLA. If there was a byelection, it would likely be a close vote.

Horgan’s biggest challenge in the remainder of his term will be to keep the economy humming along.

There are plenty of positive signs, but government revenues are slipping and the forestry crisis isn’t getting any better.

Another challenge is continuing to advance the reconciliation agenda.

The present challenge to construction of a natural gas pipeline to feed a Kitimat LNG plant is

a stark reminder that not all First Nations groups feel warm and fuzzy about the B.C. government.

A third major challenge are the twin issues of ICBC and ride-sharing. Both of these are high on the radar screen in urban areas.

Without movement to make ICBC rates more affordable and ride-sharing actually available, the NDP will lose votes.

Leadership on these two issues by Attorney-General David Eby (ICBC) and Transportation Minister Claire Trevina (ride-sharing) has been uninspiring.

affordable for drivers and offering more rides to people without cars.

The premier’s biggest asset is himself. He is a friendly, likable guy - at ease with ordinary people and comfortable in his own skin. He comes across well.

Most B.C. residents, even if they did not vote for him, like his approach to the job.

This asset may come in very handy between now and whenever the next election takes place.

EDITOR, THE NEWS: Re: Top Stories 2019: Cost of ‘attractants’ to increase in new year after deadly year for bears.

I read with some interest your article on bears and I feel compelled to comment about the way it was presented.

If you read it carefully, it is suggested that all things that attract bears – from garden veggies, fruit trees, chickens, pets as well as garbage – could be fined up to $500.

As it reads, those of us who live in the more rural part of Maple Ridge or those in town who keep green produce plots could be fined for keeping a food garden for our own use or chickens for our own use or any of the small farmers in the area who grow food and breed fowl could be fined for having attracted bears.

Whereas, everyone should be responsible for cleaning their recycling and composting vegetable waste properly, picking up ripe fruit and not putting meat, fish or other foodstuffs out to be collected until the proper time.

You cannot force people to remove their trees and gardens, which is often a way of earning a living, for this is what the article suggests.

Such a statement should be clarified. We

obots can come in all different shapes and sizes.

But the LEGO MINDSTORMS robots at the FIRST LEGO League competition hosted

by Meadowridge School on Sunday had to be entirely student built and preprogrammed to complete a series of tasks on a pre-designed course mapped out on a table.

Members of the Meadowridge robotics club participated in this years competition themed City Shaper.

There were 32 teams at the event, from Grades 5 to 8, including 36 FIRST LEGO League students from Meadowridge and around seven Junior FIRST LEGO League students, Grades 2-3, who held their own demonstration.

Challenges vary, explained Meadowridge robotics club coach Carrie Mohoruk, who helped organize the event.

she said. Then if the robots are able to trigger the crane that drops a block they can get even more points, along with releasing an accessibility swing.

Teams are given only two and a half

minutes to get as many points as they can.

And, said Mohoruk, teams can only touch the robot in specific areas or else they lose points.

There can only be two children at the table at a time to operate the robot and they have three chances to get it right.

Their top score is what counts.

Each team has a launch plan that they work on ahead of time that gives them the order they are doing the challenges in.

You have to be careful about changing that launch plan up, said Mohoruk, because it can knock other things on the table and take away points from the team.

Team Etc., made up of Grade 7 students from Meadowridge, wanted to keep their robot simple because this was their first time competing at the FIRST LEGO event.

Their robot, named Jordon, took the team almost five hours to make, as they had to change the attachments numerous times to figure out what would work the best.

Qianru Guo said finding a way to push the blocks with the attachment was the most challenging. Amy Xu said figuring out whether to use rotations or

Bella Cheung, Fiona Yang and Razaan Sayeh, each learned how to build the attachments, how they work and finding the right pieces to make up the structure of the robot.

Team Zoomers, another Meadowridge team, called their robot Short Box, and made sure there were lots of holes and options available for moving attachments around. But during the three weeks they worked on their robot design they decided to focus on one versatile attachment that can be put in two places for the competition.

“A lot of other teams have big boxish things that they can put on and off and we think that would take a lot of time,” said team member Grade 7 student Joshua Liu describing other teams’ attachments.

In competition, even though all of the programs worked on the team’s robot, they mixed up their launch plan.

Grade 8 team member Henson Han said next time they are going to be more organized.

More than robot challenge But the robot challenge is only one part of the competition. Teams also have to come up with an innovation project that they have to research and present. This years topic was cities of the future.

Students had to look at a problem facing cities today, what is currently being done to solve the problem and their own solution.

One team at Meadowridge looked at water conservation within a city.

Their idea, said Mohoruk, was having a deeper reservoir under the city where clean rain water harvested off buildings can be stored.

So that if glaciers disappear, cities can draw

from the underground reservoir during the summer months.

Another team, said Mohoruk, focused on food scarcity, coming up with an idea for a closed hydroponics system to grow food efficiently in a city.

Yet another team looked at accessibility for seniors, especially those with dementia.

Teams are then judged on a presentation about how they developed their robots and then they were judged on core values, like teamwork and fun.

Mohoruk says the reason why she likes the competition is the skills the students learn.

What they get out of this, she said, is they

learn how to negotiate within a team, how to resolve conflicts, how to overcome challenges, how to manage their own time and their own responsibilities, they take responsibility for doing the research and they learn how to present.

FIRST LEGO League is an international program for children from around 9-years to 16-years old that was created by FIRST and the LEGO Group in 1998 to get children excited about science and technology.

FIRST is a not-forprofit charity founded

in 1989 by American entrepreneur and inventor Dean Kamen to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology.

More than 310,000 children in around 100 different countries will be taking part in the 21st annual competition that is taking place over the season spanning 2019 and 2020.

Winners of the competition will have the opportunity to compete in provincials and then winners there will compete North America wide at the April competition in Texas.

A Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association campaign is returning for a third year to encourage residents to shop local.

“You need to support the community that supports you,” said Coree McIntosh, an events coordinator with the Maple Ridge BIA. Starting Feb. 1, shoppers can submit a receipt from one of the 65 participating businesses in the downtown BIA catchment to enter to win one of two gift baskets filled with local

“No purchase is too low, you can buy a 10 cent candy and get a receipt,” she said.

The “I love downtown Maple Ridge” campaign runs until Feb. 14. Shoppers can drop off a receipt at any

of the dropbox locations in the downtown.

“It’s basically a shop-local campaign,” she said.

“Leading up to Valentine’s Day, we’re hoping to heighten the awareness of shopping local.”

The campaign was recognized last year at a BIA BC conference, she added.

“Heightening the awareness of what is in the downtown Maple Ridge core is key,” McIntosh said.

“People think that

they have to go Surrey or they have to go to Coquitlam to go shopping … we have so many businesses here where you can get awesome gifts for yourself, your family or friends.”

Winners of each basket will be announced by Feb. 21.

“Most of the businesses will be donating a small gift for the gift basket that we prepare in our office,” said McIntosh.

Last year, she believes, each gift basket was valued at about $1,000.

“We ended up doing two gift baskets last year because the donations we got from the downtown businesses were overwhelming,” she added.
