Better veggies for Canadian organic farmers Changing things for Canadian organic farmers - one carrot and pepper at a time A new Canada-wide project led by the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm, part of UBC’s Faculty of Land and Food Systems, will help organic vegetable growers find plant varieties better suited to Canadian climates and environments. Postdoctoral Fellow Alexandra Lyon and Professor Hannah Wittman are leading a five-year research project called Canadian Organic Vegetable Improvement (CANOVI). CANOVI focuses on participatory plant breeding of peppers and carrots – two crops identified as top priorities for organic vegetable growers in a survey the CANOVI team conducted in 2018. “Most carrots are grown in a few intensive production regions like California, which means there’s not as much incentive for the private seed sector to breed varieties for Canadian climates,” says Lyon.

“Organic growers are a smaller proportion of the market in terms of who’s buying seed, but they still need varieties that are well-adapted to their systems. So there’s an opportunity to improve the productivity of organic farming through public plant breeding.”

Irrigation made easy with Hortau Know in real time what’s going on with your crops Irrigating is no fun. It’s definitely not why you like being a grower. But unfortunately, irrigation is more and more crucial to improve crop performance. In recent years, we have been more prone to experience climate variations and longer drought periods. Drip irrigation is by far the best irrigation method to efficiently provide water supply directly to the plant at anytime during the day. But to do it properly, it’s necessary to have sufficient access to water. Once this is possible, we need to distribute the water to the plant at the right time with the right amount. Did you know that most growers irrigate too much? Really! Too much... Is it your case? Maybe because starting the pump is giving us a false feeling of achievement. At least we are doing something, right? Well

hydric stress is not always when soil is too dry. Irrigating too much is also a stress to the plant. By irrigating too much, it just flushes your precious fertilizer and that’s not great. Even more, it slows down the plant development by lack of oxygen, poor roots development and may even lead to diseases. So what can be done? Nowadays information is key. How about knowing in real time, exactly what’s going on with your crop at your farm, instead of guessing how much water your crop needs every day or so? Now it’s possible to know exactly how much water your plant needs by measuring the hydric stress where it is sensed first: the root zone. Don’t wait until you can see the stress on your plants, because if you do, it will mean that the stress occurred a long time ago, and it will be more difficult to

reverse the sides effects if it’s still possible. There are many sensors that can be put into the soil to monitor water, there are even climate formulas that are helpful too. But where to start? How to differeniate these techniques and which one is the best for you?
