Organizer Steve Kuffler offered his praises to the Setetkwa Golf Course for accomodating the tournament on short notice when he discovered – the morning of the event – that they would need a new location as Lake Winderemere was too slippery for participants to golf safely. Meanwhile, over at Lake Windermere, skaters had no complaints about the slippery ice.

VALLEY NEWS Potential pints and a paroled peacock

By Dauna Ditson dauna@columbiavalleypioneer.com Tiny brewery proposed Steve Gale appeared before Radium council on Wednesday, January 8th to pitch his idea to open a micro-brewery or nano-brewery in the village, where he would make around 600 litres of beer a week.

Most business owners can get their licenses and get right to work, but – since Gale’s idea isn’t one that fits within the village’s permitted uses – staff advised him to check in with council and gauge their interest before getting more invested.

Gale, who is from Australia, said he started making beer “to save money or as a science experiment.” As his beer got better, his intentions became more altruistic.

“I really want a way that I can get involved in the community . . . (and) try to create something for locals and for the town of Radium,” he said.

Gale wants to serve beer – not food, unless you count popcorn – and to offer board games, darts and card games for those who pop by.

“If people want to bring food in, grab a pizza and bring it in,” he said, adding he’d like his customers to support other local businesses too.

Mayor Clara Reinhardt thanked Gale for his interest

in investing in the community, but said she would need to know more about the water the mini-brewery would use before she could give her blessing.

“We have some of the best water anywhere, arguably,” she said, adding she would like his business plan to include “how you manage our very valuable resource.”

Mark Read, chief administrative officer for the community, said Radium is already “having capacity issues at peak periods in the summer,” that breweries have “very negative impacts” on wastewater treatment systems, and that Gale’s plans for water use will be a key factor in his proposal.

Gale responded that he is used to water rationing and plans to use water-saving methods like using water twice – first for cooling and second for brewing.

Council also raised concerns about the smell associated with breweries, although Gale said the odour would only be strong for 45 minutes to an hour per batch and that he doesn’t intend to make a great deal of beer.

“We don’t want to have to get bigger,” he said. “We want something small where you only find this in Radium.”

As he wrapped up his pitch, Reinhardt told Gale that she would like him to identify how much water will be used and how much will wash away.

“Flesh it out and get some of the details ironed out,” she said.

Radium grants amnesty for peacock Radium’s peacock would presumably have preened his feathers if he had attended the community’s last council meeting where his fate was sealed.

Back in October he was slated for exile, with the village making arrangements to banish him to a nearby acreage, but the peacock foiled the efforts of those who attempted to capture him.

With the peacock on the loose and evading those who would send him away, the village relented and granted him amnesty.

“He’s staying in town,” Mayor Clara Reinhardt said, adding that the decision to allow him to remain in the community comes after a group of locals lobbied on his behalf, offering to give the big blue bird their devotion.

“They called me and asked me why he had to move,” she said. “I said we just didn’t want somebody to find him dead. That’s why he had to move – in order to ensure that he was cared for. And they assured me that there was a group of people who are caring for him.”

The peacock has been thriving since he was able to come out of hiding.

“He has been sighted. Apparently he’s back in full plumage,” Reinhardt said.

As for the property owner, whose peacock plans were prevented, Reinhardt said: “oh, he’ll get over it.”

Former Waterside property to be rezoned?

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com Several Invermere residents voiced general support, albeit with concerns about potential traffic issues, during a recent public hearing on a zoning change for the former Waterside property.

A total of nine area residents turned out to the hearing on Tuesday, January 7th, which centred on the current property owner’s request to revert the zoning for the land back to what it was prior to the proposed Waterside project.

The Waterside project (which at various points and under various owners, has also been called the Octagon Properties project and Vista Del Lago project) was first proposed in 2005, and if it had come to fruition would have seen more than 600 condominiums (possibly in condo towers up to nine storeys tall), an 87,000 square foot (more than 8,000 square metre) downtown hotel and conference centre, and up to 50,000 square feet (4,500 square metres) of commercial space built, for the most part, on the land sitting between the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena and 4th Avenue (the inukshuk statue) on the west and the Canadian Pacific Rail tracks along the shores of Lake Windermere to the east.

The project collapsed for a host of reasons: its overambitious scope, the bursting in and around 2008 of what turned out to be a mercurially hot real estate bubble in the Columbia Valley, and the descent in 2010 and 2011 of then-owners Stoneset Equity Development Corp. into a swampy quagmire of major financial problems, including staggering debts, little apparent income, multimillion dollar working capital deficits, the sudden resignation of the company’s chief financial officer, two stock market de-listings, and a RCMP investigation into the company president’s alleged involvement with a Costa Rican Ponzi scheme.

The dramatic demise of Waterside was sealed as, with foreclosure looming, the whole grandiose scheme dissolved amidst a litany of actual and threatened lawsuits (some seeking as much as $25 million), statements of claim, and allegations of negligence, involving Stoneset, Octagon Properties Ltd., Trumpet Capital, Aqueous Capital Corp, and an independent property assessor. At one brief point Stoneset made noises about suing the District of Invermere over a bylaw related to the property.

The land has sat vacant ever since, as either a cautionary reminder of the heady days of the valley’s mid-to-late-2000s real estate boom, or as one of Invermere’s Please see page 5. . .

Submitted by Sgt. Darren Kakuno Detachment Commander Columbia Valley RCMP This past week, January 6th through January 12th the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 44 calls for service. The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to.

• On Wednesday, January 8 at about 9:50 a.m. Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a structure fire at a residence on Mays Avenue in Wilmer.

The Invermere Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire. There were no injuries and the fire was not considered suspicious.

• On Friday, January 10th at 9 a.m. police received a report of a single vehicle motor vehicle incident on Columbia Ridge Drive in Fairmont Hot Springs.

An officer located an unoccupied Honda Civic in the

ditch with airbags deployed at Fir Bay and Columbia Ridge Drive. The officer made contact with the registered owner who confirmed she had driven off the road the previous evening and was uninjured. The owner was warned about leaving the scene of an accident.

• On Saturday, January 11 Columbia Valley RCMP received a request from Cranbrook RCMP to be on the lookout for a Dodge pickup which had allegedly been involved in a theft from a retail store in Cranbrook earlier in the day. At about 8 p.m. a member of the East Kootenay Traffic Services located the suspect vehicle in Windermere. A Columbia Valley RCMP officer attended the location and assisted with the arrest of two individuals. A search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of stolen items. A 30-year-old female and a 27-year-old male were released on conditions to attend court at a later date.

Licences needed for ice fishing Tales from the field

By BC Conservation Officer Sgt. Matt Hall With winter in full swing it is great to see people out enjoying ice fishing in the valley. The Conservation Officer Service just wanted to remind people of the importance of reading the regulations before heading out.

Last weekend I checked two anglers, neither of which had any angling licences. Both also had three lines each (you are only allowed one line while ice fishing in B.C.). About a week back I checked another angler with two lines in the water.

Another big issue is people obtaining a B.C. resident angling licence when they are not a B.C. resident.

Two weeks ago I checked three Albertans that had invalid B.C. resident licences. Second home owners use their B.C. address thinking that it intitles them to a B.C. resident angling licence. The last page of the Freshwater Fishing Regulations Synopsis (available at

Service BC and online) defines ‘resident’: “… means your primary residence is in B.C., AND (a) you are a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, AND have been physically present in B.C. for the greater portion of each of 6 calendar months out of the immediately preceding 12 calendar months, OR (b) you are NOT a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, but have been physically present in B.C. for the greater portion of each of the immediately preceding 12 calendar months.”

Fines for obtaining a B.C. resident angling licence (while not being a B.C. resident) can vary, or potentially a court appearance can be issued. I fined one of the anglers mentioned above $575. All anglers mentioned above were fined (varying amounts depending on offence and number of offences) and some had items (fish) seized.The public can report any violations they see to the Report all Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) line 1-877-952-7277.

Valley hot springs closed

By Dauna Ditson dauna@columbiavalleypioneer.com Both the Radium Hot Springs pools and Fairmont Hot Springs Resort pools are closed for safety reasons.

According to a press release from Parks Canada, the Radium pools are closed because: “investigations by a structural engineer for an upcoming stage of renovations have revealed degradation of the subfloor, creating a risk to public and staff safety.”

The Radium pools will remain closed indefinitely “until appropriate mitigations can be put in place.”

The closure came days before newly-elected MP Rob Morrison’s planned visit to the village on Monday, January 13, during which Mayor Clara Reinhardt had already

intended to take him for a tour of the pools and ask him to do whatever he could to prevent any further full closures of the facility. Before the current closure occurred, she said that a previous closure left the village very quiet and that the community does better when the pools are open.

Over at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, the pools are also closed for safety. The resort issued a press release that said: “as our pools use natural mineral water from our hot springs, there is a concern with current flow rates that could potentially pose a safety risk to our guests.”

Whiteway triathlon: Skate, ski, run

By Dauna Ditson dauna@columbiavalleypioneer.com If you thought the Lake Windermere Whiteway – which won a Guinness World Record as the world’s longest skating trail and which is accompanied by a cross-country ski trail – was already living its best life, you’re in for a chilly but delightful surprise.

Not content to stick to leisurely recreation, the Whiteway committee is adding some friendly competition with a brand-new event on Sunday, January 19: the Whiteway Winter Challenge.

Participants and teams will do three laps of the 10-to-12-kilometre loop, first skating, then skiing and then finishing off in a run.

“This is a fun, non-competitive event meant to challenge people to get out and enjoy the Whiteway as individuals or in teams,” said Duncan Whittick, who co-chairs the Whiteway committee on behalf of the Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club. “We look forward

During the public hearing, Invermere councillor Gerry Taft outlined that the current owner is the creditor for the previous owners, and surmised that trying to go back to the original zoning (“downzoning,” as councillor Taft put it) is likely part of an effort to sell some or all of the property.

The residents at the hearing almost universally gave general support to the downzoning, but all added minor misgivings either about the potential traffic impacts of any development on the land, the timing of notice about the public hearing coming over the Christmas holidays, or the potential for multi-family residential (high density) development (which the reverting to the old zoning would allow for) to block lake views.

Whittick said he expects the fastest participants to finish the whole race in under two hours, but that individuals and teams will have an hour and a half on average to complete each loop.

This isn’t the first time winter enthusiasts have tried to hold a similar multi-sport race, but Whittick said the weather hasn’t been a good sport in the past.

If the weather holds out, this will be the first skate, ski and run competition he’s heard of taking place on the lake.

Whether or not the conditions are favourable for all three sports, some version of the race will most likely proceed unless the temperature on race day is colder than -20C. In that case, the event would be cancelled and refunds issued.

The Radium Hot Springs pool facility will be closed from January 20 until early February for change room renovations.

Invermere planner Rory Hromadnik noted that the maximum number of units possible under the proposed rezoning is 36, and the maximum number of storeys possible would be four, in comparison with the 600 plus units and nine storeys of the Waterside proposal, and also added that the land owner is not actually proposing development at this time. Councillor Taft added the owner probably wants to sell the land off as-is.

“I think even a three-storey view (blocking sight lines to the lake from the inukshuk) won’t work for many,” said Invermere resident David Oaks. “I understand we can’t pull back from development completely, but we should do what we can to preserve access to the water and sight lines to the water.”

Aside from the input of the nine residents at the meeting, council received email input from three local residents on the matter. Council will consider the input before deciding on the rezoning request during a future council meeting.

PERSPECTIVE Age irrelevant

Historical Lens

By Dauna Ditson dauna@columbiavalleypioneer.com There’s a sentiment that’s appeared a few times in these pages that agitates me. It’s the idea that young people aren’t entitled to express their opinions because of their age.

Ideas should be judged on their merit, not dismissed based on the age of the thinker.

Young people, old people and everyone in between should be able to speak, to be heard and to be as politically engaged and active as they choose.

It’s fine to disagree with their points and challenge their perspectives, but just because they are younger doesn’t mean they should be seen instead of heard.

In last week’s paper, some of columnist Arnold Malone’s concerns with activist Greta Thunberg were specifically related to her age.

He said she used “language that was too severe for a 16-year-old” and that “at age 16 you need to be more careful as to whom you think lacks maturity.”

If her comments are “too severe” – and perhaps some are – that should be the case regardless of her age.

No one’s age should disqualify them from questioning others, and Thunberg and Malone should be equally entitled to express their opinions with the exact same degree of severity.

Last year the students who painted a rainbow crosswalk to help their peers feel welcome at J. A. Laird Elementary School were told, through a letter to the editor, that they were too young for council to listen to them or respond to their concerns.

Fortunately, council took the students seriously and helped them make their rainbow dream come true.

To some degree, a person’s age is irrelevant when it comes to having good ideas and terrible ideas.

I once – as a grownup – swallowed a dime-sized ball of wasabi to see what would happen.

Answer: unpleasantness!

In contrast, my little pal Isaac McLeod was five when he drew his instructions for life: drink tea, look at the mountains and be happy.

That’s about as good as life instructions get – especially for those of us lucky enough to live in the valley.

While age can correspond with wisdom, it’s obviously not a guarantee.

Let’s value what people have to say on the merits of the points they make, not on what year they were born or whether they can drive or even tie their shoes.

No matter your age, your opinions are welcome here.

Borderless healthcare Dear Editor: In the December 5th edition of the Pioneer I read an article, “Love, Loss and Lingering Questions,” which was equally saddening and maddening. The article detailed the dysfunctional bureaucratic nightmare that Jim and Margie Gibb endured after Margie had been diagnosed with “suspected presence of cancer” while wintering in Tuscon, Arizona on January 13, 2019.

Rather than fly the Gibbs to Calgary, Alberta they were told by the insurer they would have to be flown to “British Columbia, no exceptions.” This is where the crux of the problem lies: that although she was a short three hours from the nearest cancer treatment facility, the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, due to her residency in B.C., Margie was sent by ambulance to Invermere and lost precious time before being returned to the Tom Baker a few days later to receive testing.

Tests at the Tom Baker confirmed that Margie had cancer, however she was then informed that becauseshe was a B.C. resident, her treatment would need to be given in B.C.. The only other option to receive treatment in Alberta was that the Gibbs would have to become residents of Alberta.

An examination of the madness of interprovincial politics leads one to question why were the Gibbs re-

fused timely, necessary medical treatment at a medical institution (the Tom Baker) that had already run tests and therefore determined she urgently required specialized treatment? The reason being that she was not an Alberta resident. Are we not all Canadian citizens?

Entitled to equal and compassionate, timely health care? Apparently not, in this dysfunctional confederation of fiefdoms we call Canada. Margie Gibb was a woman of many talents and she had contributed in a very meaningful way to the betterment of our society as a teacher over her 26 year career. She was a fellow citizen that suffered needlessly due to the inequitable division of powers bestowed upon provincial governments through the antiquated constitution that we are all victims of. Margie died on February 25, 2019.

We need to ask ourselves how our country can call itself a country when every province behaves like its own little kingdom? The reality is endless regulatory conditions and added expense to all, for the benefit of the few!

The clear path forward must include an overhaul of our constitution, abolishment of provincial governments and the creation of a proportional electoral system of governance in our great country.

LETTERS Heating costs too high

Dear Editor: I’m a taxpayer living in the Windermere area. I have a 40-year-old house being heated 100 per cent with electricity. Like many other houses in the area, it was built without ducting mainly because electricity was likely very economical in those days and, aside from propane, no other options like natural gas were available then and still are not to this day in this region.

Electrical rates have been rising over the years as is to be expected. It is now getting to be very expensive to heat with just electricity. More and more of us are using increased amounts of heat from wood fireplaces, much to the detriment of some of the people around us either allergic to or in opposition to the smoke generated by such heating techniques.

BC Hydro does offer some plans whereby a person can pay instalments all year so that the Dec/Jan heating bill is not so huge but the fact remains that in the cold of winter, the two month heating bill for a 2,000 sq ft house approaches $1,000. This amount is easily double if not triple what it would cost to heat a similar house with natural gas.

True, I could move to an area which has cheaper rates to heat homes, but I shouldn’t have to do that.

FIRST, electricity rates in this area are too high.

SECOND, BC Hydro Tier 1 and Tier 2 rates are incorrectly set up.

Using those allegedly competitive electricity rates to keep our houses warm simply is not competitive when compared to other parts of B.C. where natural gas is available. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE FOR THOSE AREAS OF B.C. SO AFFECTED. On the second issue, consumers need to be given half a chance to having a fair deal without having to resort to increasing our carbon foot print by being forced to burn wood to heat our homes. When the Tier 1 BC Hydro rates expire within 5-10 days of a 60 day billing cycle, something is fundamentally wrong. A homeowner simply has no opportunity to demonstrate electrical conservation, which in my case involved a full energy assessment with over $50,000 in expenditures for wrapping the house, insulating the house, replacing windows and doors throughout, and adding a split heat pump, with no appreciable difference in power bills after it was all done.

Needless to say, the only way many of us in the Windermere Valley can reduce our power bills is to continue increasing our carbon footprint by burning wood in our fireplaces for supplementary heat: the exact opposite of what climate change needs dictate.

We need government to steer things in the proper direction.

Dear Editor, I have often bragged that one of the nicest benefits of living in the Juniper Heights area, north of town, is that anyone can walk out the door and begin hiking. There is a block of Crown land immediately north of our settlement for a person to lose track of time as they enjoy a vigorous walk while communing with nature. Motor vehicle access is banned and that is the only restriction.

The relative solitude has been wonderful, but in recent years I’ve had to do more sharing. The area has become very popular with mountain bikers and that has prompted a proliferation of new trails. At times, there are as many as a dozen vehicles in the parking area just off Juniper Heights Road. But I’ve never felt crowded.

However, it was recently pointed out to me by concerned neighbours that this easily accessed playground might soon be off limits to hikers, bikers, equestrians, dog walkers and

the like. An official notice, which I’d missed, had been posted in the December 26 issue of the Pioneer. You know the kind: lots of government legalese and a map with details too small to read even with the aid of a good magnifying glass. The heading read: Land Act: Notice of Intention to Apply for a Disposition of Crown Land.

And you guessed it, one of the parcels of crown land which is potentially slated to become Indian Reserve is the piece described above.

Not understanding this or being too busy is so easy to become the lie. I didn’t think I could make a difference........so just like others I didn’t even ‘try’.

What you do with your time in the effort of this word is better than guilt, shame and scorn, so that if you are a good caretaker of your life and time, after you die then you can be reborn.

In tune: East Kootenay husband and wife folksters hit all the right notes together

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com The Parsons’ vocal harmonies ring with a beautifully uncanny precision — as though you are hearing two voices crafted by the same mind. You aren’t, of course, but the husband and wife duo are about as in tune with each other as it gets, and the sonic outcomes are exceptional.

Clayton and Joelle Parson met as roommates in Cranbrook. Clayton, who grew up steeped in music, had a home studio in the place, and was working on a song.

He need somebody to sing harmony, and Joelle obliged.

The resultant music was great and the two collaborated informally on a bunch of other songs. But in terms of forming a band? Well, Joelle was already playing with locally-famous six-piece folk band the Good Ol’ Goats.

And in terms of the creative spark between them signalling something other than just musical compatibility?

Well, Joelle already had a steady boyfriend.

But eventually the Good Ol’ Goats invited Clayton to join the band too, and the bond between he and Joelle deepened.

“We were the older ones in the band. The others were younger and a lot more . . . rowdy, I guess you could say,” said Clayton. “So when we were on tour, because we hadn’t partied as much or as hard, we were always designated as the driver and co-pilot of the van. And we kind of took it on ourselves to keep everybody in line. So they (the other band members) started referring to us as ‘mom and dad.’ And our chemistry as friends strengthened from that.”

Later Joelle’s relationship ended, and after a while she and Clayton realized that they had more than a friendship together. Or as Clayton put it: “We finally saw that ‘hey this is a thing.’”

In time the band broke up, as various members of the Good Ol’ Goats grew up and moved on with their lives, heading to music school, or to the coast or the Okanagan for the promise of opportunities not available in the East Kootenay.

Not Joelle or Clayton though. The band was done, but their relationship was just starting. And besides, Cranbrook was home. So they began playing music together, as a duo. The sound is still folk, but much different than the Goats’ foot stomping high-energy shows with banjos, mandolins, fiddles and steel guitar all flying at once. Instead the Parsons play it more straight up, toned down (in terms of energy) and intimate. Just two voices and two acoustic guitars. The sound they create as a pair is a throwback to the stripped down folk scene of the 1960s (think Emmylou Harris, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, or a young, Greenwich Village-era Bob Dylan).

“It’s bittersweet,” said Clayton of playing as a duo

instead of a six-piece band. “The type of gigs you get is completely different. With a full band you can play to a larger audience, you can play music that’s high-energy, more danceable. With a duo, the shows are more up-close and personal. You get to bare your soul a little bit more.

But at the same time, if you want to engage the audience you have to bare your soul more, because otherwise it’s easy to dismiss a folk duo as mellow background music.

It (playing as a pair) is a lot less work, it’s a lot more functional and it can last a lot longer.”

Touring as duo, for instance, is infinitely easier, he adds. Instead of trying to juggle six people’s work-life schedules, sorting out finances for six, renting an enormous van to haul all the gear and people, and figuring out the sound system for six instruments plus vocals at each venue, Clayton and Joelle simply hop in their car together with their guitars and, as he puts, “we can go wherever we want, pretty much. It’s almost like going on a date, and we both love the simplicity of it. When we toured with the Goats, it was full-on, and you came back drained and needing a break. Now as the Parsons, we come back from tours feeling refreshed.”

The Parsons’ songwriting process usually starts with Clayton coming up with the basic outline of song. Once some working lyrics have been ironed out, Joelle comes in to add vocal harmonies and feedback. Based on that input, the songs are adjusted some, then adjusted some more. From there, Joelle will figure out the rhythm guitar parts, which Clayton then uses as the basis over which to lay his fingerpicking.

“So I guess in a sense, they start out as my songs, but pretty quickly they become our songs,” he said. “Joelle and I just work together well, as people and as musicians.

Playing music together has been a kind of glue for our relationship, bringing us together. We joke that the band can’t break up now, because it’s married.”

Both Clayton and Joelle grew up awash in music. Joelle began singing with church and school choirs, in musical theatre productions and at community events, while Clayton counts childhood Christmas jam sessions with his seven siblings (“everybody played an instrument,” he said) as being among his biggest musical influences.

The pair are drawn to folk and other forms of acoustic music, because “it has a raw honesty to it,” said Clayton, and because folk songs often encapsulate storytelling and narrative.

“It (folk music) doesn’t have anything to hide behind. There’s no smoke, no mirrors and you really have to feel the heart of what the singer is trying to say,” he says. “When it’s done well it really stands out. And when it’s not done well . . . all the wrong notes stick out. So you have to play well. And all the lyrics are heard, so you kind of have to create lyrics that can provoke imagination. You really have to hone your craft.”

Local golf pro heads to Florida to collect prestigious award

The trip caps off a season in which Schaal was also named the PGA of B.C. Executive Professional of the Year.

Imagination-provoking lyrics are something the Parsons excel at, and audience members at their shows are apt to find familiar elements of their own lives in the pair’s songs.

“We make our music relatable to people and their life experiences, so we write about the area in which we live — the Kootenay — and we write about the people who live here,” said Clayton.

The husband and wife pair are set to bring these tales, along with their fingerpicking, strumming and harmonies to Pynelogs on Thursday, January 23, when they will be performing along with fellow East Kootenay folksters Wild Honey as part of CV Arts’ Love It Live series.

The Parsons have tested their mettle as a Love It Live opening act at least three times previously and are delighted to now get the chance to headline.

It’s humbling even just to win the B.C. award, let alone the Canadian one,” Schaal told the Pioneer. “There are so many other great pros here in B.C. and right across Canada doing so many things, and to be recognized as being among them is, as I said, humbling.”

The PGA of Canada, in deciding on a winner, looks not just at the performance of the individual being considered, but also at how this person has helped serve the community in which her or his resort is located, which Schaal says gives the honour that much more weight.

“We’ve always enjoyed being part of the (Columbia Valley) community and we feel it’s important to give back, which we do with events such as Feed the Town,” he said.

“It takes a team to win an award like this, even though it is given to an individual. And we’ve got a great team at Copper Point.”

Schaal is excited to go to the Golf Show for the first time.

“It’s huge. In fact, it’s the biggest in the golf business. Even if you spend two days riding around on a golf cart you still wouldn’t be able to take in everything at the show,” he said. “It’s a huge draw for golfing enthusiasts, and you get to rub shoulders with some of the PGA and LPGA pros.”

Schaal will get the award during a special ceremony at the show’s Canadian Night celebration on Thursday, January 23.

The Copper Point pro has come runner-up for the PGA of B.C. Executive Professional of the Year a few times in the past, but said this was the first time he was in the running for the national level accolade.

Schaal said the award may in part reflect the growing prominence of the East Kootenay generally and the Columbia Valley specifically in the Canadian golf world. This was given a boost earlier this year when Copper Point hosted the PGA of B.C. Pro Assistance Championship.

That event is normally held on the coast, and Schaal said having it here has given the area increased recognition.

The price is right in Radium

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com The price in Radium is right indeed. The village recently got a big boost of attention when the Prestige Radium Hot Springs Resort was featured on the American game show The Price Is Right.

The Wednesday, December 18 episode of the hit CBS game show featured excited contestant Jasmine winning a prize package, during the show’s Showcase Showdown round, described as a ski trip, including a 6-night stay at the Prestige in Radium along with a $100 dining credit to Conrad’s Kitchen and Grill, and passes to the Radium Hot Springs pools.

The prize package is the fourth time in the past year that a stay at a Prestige resort or hotel in the Kootenay or Okanagan has been up from grabs on the The Price Is Right, which CBS touts as the number one daytime television show in America, with 5.4 million daily viewers. But when Jasmine arrives in Radium it will be the first time a winning contestant has actually cashed in on their Prestige trip. Vacation packages at Prestige properties in Nelson and Kelowna had featured in previous episodes, but were not won. A stay in the Prestige in Cranbrook had been won on the show, but in the end the winner decided not to take the prize (under U.S. law the winner would have been obliged to pay taxes on the roughly $10,000 prize).

Jasmine, however, who hails from Oklahoma, is planning to come visit the Columbia Valley, although she may decide to skip the ‘ski’ aspect of her vacation and come in the summer.

“When the producers approached us to participate and sponsor the prize, we of

course said yes. It’s such an iconic game show that is watched by millions of people around the world, and we’re so excited that the contestant actually won the prize. We’re looking forward to the opportunity to showcase our beautiful town and the surrounding area to her,” said Prestige Radium general manager Trevor Carr in a press release.

“We’re certain that she will fall in love with the Radium area.”

The Price Is Right has been on air since 1956, and it gained its current structure and iconic host Bob Barker in 1972. Television star Drew Carey has been the host since Barker stepped down from the role in 2007.

“We were approached (by The Price Is Right) about a year to a year and a half ago.

They were looking for us to donate a six-night stay in Cranbrook,” Prestige Hotels and Resorts executive director of sales and marketing Amy Nunn told the Pioneer, explaining how a resort in a village of not-quite 800 people came to be featured on a game show with such large international exposure. “We were excited to be part of that, and we mentioned that we have more properties in the region. The relationship grew from there.”

Nunn added that the exposure is great not just for Prestige, but for the entire village of Radium, and said the company has had phone calls in the wake of the show, with the callers mentioning that they’d seen the Prestige Radium on The Price Is Right.

“It’s been really exciting. Our staff have been watching eagerly on television each time one of our properties has been on the show,” said Nunn.

The timing of Jasmine’s visit couldn’t be better, since the Prestige Radium has just been through some major renovations in the past few years.

A fifth The Price Is Right episode featuring a Prestige property — this time the one in Prince George — is slated to air sometime this winter.

The position will involve supporting the Shuswap Band and the Secwepemc Nation in Columbia River Treaty negotiations through study initiation, technical support and project management/guidance.

Rink ready for Radium

By Breanne Massey Special to the Pioneer A new rink is ready for skaters in the Radium Hot Springs community.

The decision to build a new recreational facility for the community when finances were available came to fruition this year after the Radium Hot Springs municipality received a grant and a private donation to proceed this winter.

“The new rink was a part of the master plan developed when we were planning the Radium Hot Springs Centre,” Mayor Clara Reinhardt recently wrote to the Pioneer.

“The plan was to build when the funding was in place. We received a grant and a private donation which made it possible to move forward this year.

The need for a new skating rink became prevalent over the years as the existing facilities available to the community began suffering from degradation of the infrastructure’s conditions.

“Our current rink is well used but is showing signs of wear and tear,” Reinhardt explained. “One end corner is substantively lower and requires many floods before the rest of the rink starts to hold water. The square corners are an issue, and the site needs to be repurposed as more parking and potentially the site for future markets. The community benefits any time we upgrade recreation facilities.”

The total cost of the project was $770,000, which includes an amenities building that will be completed this spring.

There will be no admission fees, at this time, to use the new skating rink in Radium Hot Springs.

“The work on the rink is done,” said Reinhardt. “Our plan is to be skating on it as soon as the weather cooperates.”
