While adults might not be thrilled to drive in or shovel the recent white stuff, youngsters have an entirely different take on this recent blast of winter weather that has engulfed the Lower Mainland. For most of them, it’s a welcome change. Kristen Wong, for instance, shared this picture saying “We are loving it …”

The Trans Canada Highway eastbound was closed for an hour Monday morning after a semi jackknifed at the 264th Street overpass.

Township deputy fire chief Bruce Ferguson said there were numerous other crashes during the morning, as well as a tree that fell on the highway.

There were far fewer crashes in Langley City, reported City fire chief Rory Thompson.

“Pretty quiet for us,” said Thompson, aside from a few fender benders as of mid-day Monday.

Langley Township, with its much greater land area, more hills, and a huge road network, has a Ferguson bigger challenge controlling snow and ice than the City.

The Township has 970 km of centre-line roads, said roads operations manager Brian Edey.

Now, to preserve that history, Calihou travels to local schools to showcase his culture through woodworking; he built a model Red River cart for FLNHS last year. It now sits on display in the Big House.

The York boat project marks a special return to the fort for him.

A rich history York boats were a specialized, indigenous-designed mode of transportation used by the Hudson’s Bay Company to carry furs and trade goods along inland waterways.

Calihou said he will be using a mixture of fir, spruce, and possibly even hemlock to construct the boat – depending on what will be available.

He is using an array of hand tools, specifically chisels, files, and mallets to carve out the design, while contending with seasonal weather in a tent, a portable heater and determination to help get the job done.

“It will be something to honour all

of the Metis people who lived before, who are here now, and all who will come after,” Calihou explained.

Once it’s completed, the boat won’t be going to far from where it was created.

Though Calihou said it’s a dream of his to paddle an authentic York boat, this one will be left on site for people to interact with, and actually sit in.

“It’s not something you just read about in a book. You can actually touch it and see what our ancestors had to go through to get around,” Calihou added.

“Can you imagine paddling a boat like this on their diet? They we’re strong.”

Calihou said he’ll be carving on site Mondays through Fridays, within the walls of the fort.

Malin Jordan: What are some of your first thoughts on your time in office?

John Aldag: I will always remember that first day of

Criminals targeted the Aldergrove area in a spate of recent crimes, including a window being smashed at a local convenience store.

The Langley RCMP is seeking assistance with several investigations, and provided photos to help elicit information from the public, according to Langley RCMP Cpl. Holly Largy.

• It is alleged a man became irate with staff at the 7-Eleven in Aldergrove on Jan. 1 and threw a garbage can, smashing glass on the building. He is described as Caucasian, approximately 5’9” tall, and he was wearing a white hoodie, a grey toque and blue jeans.

• A female is alleged to have stolen a two pack Dewalt 20V battery pack from the Otter Co-op on Dec. 22.

• Police allege a man broke into the Aldergrove Community Centre on Jan. 1.

He stole a laptop valued at nearly $3,000. He is described as being in his twenties and was wearing a black ball cap, a hoodie, and was carrying a

The children were cared for by Burnaby RCMP’s Victim Services Unit and were picked up by another family member.

“We are very thankful to the citizen who did not try to get involved or stop the vehicle himself but instead ensured that we had accurate information on where the vehicle was going,” Cpl. Mike Kalanj said.

The driver, a 44-year-old man, is facing a number of charges including being impaired while driving, driving while suspended and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

A Burnaby couple are looking for answers after their belongings and vehicle were stolen from the Walnut Grove Community Centre on Jan. 4.

Malissa Moniz said her and her boyfriend, Jose Airton dos Santos, decided to try out the pool at the community centre last Saturday evening for the first time.

“When we returned back to the family locker room at 10 p.m., we discovered that his locker was bent and hanging open, completely empty,” Moniz recalled. “It looked as if someone had used force to break inside.”

Airton dos Santos had his clothes, wallet, ID, phone, car keys, and even his passport stolen; he is from Brazil, working and studying in Canada on a student visa for the past two years.

“We reported the theft to the onsite supervisor who immediately had him call the RCMP,” Moniz continued. “Minutes later, we discovered that his 2007 black Dodge Caliber was gone from the parking lot.”

Moniz said a location tracking app on his her boyfriend’s phone did help temporarily track the route to a nearby 7-Eleven, but RCMP found no sign of the car.

“We then discovered multiple fraud charges on his credit card less than an hour after the theft, including an attempt to authorize an Amazon account,” she added.

RCMP later informed the couple that there had been 10 previous thefts in the last week at the Walnut Grove Community Centre.

Moniz said when she informed the supervisor of the locker, they didn’t seem surprised.

“Nobody at the community centre informed us of the higher risk of theft recently,” Moniz explained. “There was no signage or additional security anywhere.”

The Township of Langley released a statement regarding the incidents, saying that security measures are being taken.

“Unfortunately, theft occurs in all communities at shopping malls, movie theatres, homes, and sometimes community centres,” the statement read.

“To prevent theft at Township of Langley facilities several measures are in place including: posted signs reminding guests to minimize the amount of valuables they bring onsite or leave in their cars, regular staff walk-thrus of change rooms and other areas, and providing wallet lockers in visible public areas aside from larger lockers in change rooms. We will continue to be diligent in our security efforts and encourage guests

to leave valuables at home whenever possible or use wallet lockers,” it continued.

Moniz said RCMP were able to locate the vehicle, but nothing was left inside.

She additionally met with the community centre manager to discuss further security measures.

“Maybe there could be at least a sign or more security on site… maybe an occasional route through the locker rooms to check,” she said.

“Something should be done if it’s a known concern.”

Airton dos Santos had a trip home planned to Brazil at the end of January to visit his family for the first time in over a year. Without the passport, Moniz said the trip is no longer possible.

“I cannot believe this has happened to me in this country,” he said. “They have taken everything that I have.”

Moniz has set up a GofundMe page to try and recover what her boyfriend has lost.

“We’re scared of Langley now… and even just going out to public places,” she added.

Of the 970 km of main roads in the Township, about 300 km are considered “first priority” for plowing and salting. They include major thoroughfares such as Fraser Highway, 200th Street, and other key roads.

There are another 200 km of second-priority roads that can be dealt with after the first priority roads are clear.

“There’s no way we have enough equipment or time to every road in the Township,” Edey noted.

Langley City is responsible for maintaining 74 kilometres of road.

The City’s first priority is 200th and 208th streets.

othing like a fresh snowfall to demonstrate the foibles of West Coast drivers.

We joke about how terrified and/or inept those of us who learned to drive in Metro Vancouver are when it comes to the white stuff. Folks who moved here from Winnipeg and Corner Brook and Kitchener, who feel the annual call to switch to snow tires in their bones, frequently mock us.

That may be fair or it may be unfair – we have so little chance to practice, after all.

But one thing we can do with or without practice is to clear our cars of snow properly before getting behind the wheel.

Whether you’ve got a snow brush and ice scraper combo from the hardware store, or you’re using the sleeve of your coat and your least-favourite credit card, please, can everyone just spend a few minutes cleaning their windshields when it snows this winter?

How many times have you been driving after a snowfall only to be confronted by a vehicle with a driver is peering through a tiny window they’ve carved in the three inches of slush on their windshield?

If they’re oncoming, fishtailing on balding all-season tires, it can be a terrifying experience.

The police don’t have the time or staff numbers to pull over every one of these drivers and give them a ticket and a lecture.

They’re busy helping the firefighters pull people out of ditches, especially the ones who put too much faith in the stability of their four-wheel-drive vehicles on days when they should know better.

So please, don’t try to make your way through life peering out like a submarine captain staring through a periscope. Clean up your car, and then maybe help your neighbour if they’re elderly or can’t quite reach across the windshield.

Community effort has now led to the construction of a refurbished bridge over the ditch along 36th Avenue, where Carley died. This will allow people to access a memorial to her.

People gathered there on Jan. 6 to dedicate the new bridge and remember Carley, who would have turned 31 this year.

That fact is a reminder of just how tragic this event was.

Had Wettlaufer obeyed the law and not been driving, she would be alive today. She could be in the early years of a career as a vet – helping animals whom people love to live better lives.

As a society, we need to keep being vigilant about crimes involving drivers. During my years as a community newspaper editor, we covered far too many of these issues – and the problem of hit-and-runs, drunk driving, driving while prohibited and, in more recent years, driving while distracted by smart phones and other devices continue apace.

Let’s not forget Carley and her family, and let’s do our best to keep these crimes to a minimum in the future.

Where’s government in strata mess?

Dear Editor, Re: [Shock for Willoughby condo owners, Langley Advance Times, Jan. 10] Our government has allowed the real estate industry to get so out of control, few can afford to buy a single-family home.

So people turn to strata living as an alternative.

Our government makes it a legal requirement for stratas to obtain insurance for full replacement value of the common property.

Now, with higher property values, construction costs and worldwide catastrophes, there are a reduced number of insurance companies who are covering strata insurance in B.C. Our government ignores this.

Langley Community Farmers Market will not be returning next year, the board of directors announced on

The board’s statement said that the 2019 market season had been “disappointing” and that they had made the difficult decision to suspend the operation of the usual

The non-profit Langley Community Farmers Market Society (LCFMS) will maintain minimum operations in 2020 in order to undertake a process of “revisioning the

Counsel offered District letter about plane crash Langley School District has made resources available for students and staff impacted by the airplane crash in Iran.

“The Langley School District has students and staff that are part of the Iranian-Canadian community,” superintendent Gord Stewart said in a letter sent home with students.

“Our collective thoughts and sentiments are with the families and friends who are feeling the loss.”

Three new residents from Germany are calling South Langley home.

Footnote Farm has imported Norwegian fjord horses for its breeding program.

The rare dun-colour breed, considered one of the oldest in the world, is not often seen in B.C., nor even the rest of Canada.

Footnote, in fact, is the only fjord breeder in the province and contains the largest herds in the country and western United States.

Jenny Barnes, owner and operator of the sprawling equine centre near 8th Avenue and 224 Street, said Footnote began in California in 2006, before moving to Langley in 2009.

“Not including boarding clients, we have 14 fjord horses right now for working, retiring, and breeding,” she said. “People know them for therapy, but they can do so much more.”

These horses were domesticated more than 4,000 years ago and selectively bred for 2,000. Most of North America’s stock was imported in the 1950s.

Their smaller stature had limited many people’s desire to initially have them as a work horse.

Barnes first came in contact with fjord horses when she volunteered with Pacific Riding For Developing Abilities (PRDA), and felt that there seemed to be no limit to their potential.

“They are safe and solid – great with sound and temperament; a sort of jack-of-all-trades that can be used for jumping, dressage, and mountain trail competition,” Barnes explained.

She soon “fell in love” with a barely broken fjord in California, which she trained and later showed on the A circuit.

“I explored everything there is to know about fjords and was having more fun than I ever did with warmbloods,” Barnes added. “And the rest, they say, is history.”

That history included a major shift in the market when a large run up in the economy in 2008 led to, what Barnes said, was far too many fjords on the market.

“What happens is that the market crashes and most breeders either retire, geld stallions, and flood the market with low quality fjords at auctions” Barnes explained.

“On the Norwegian Fjord Horse Registry (NFHR) at that time, there were 500 in North America. By 2016, there was 43.”

With a hole in the market and a driving passion for that particular breed, Barnes imported her first fjords for the first time in 2009, then two mares in foal in 2016, and

now, the new batch – Lidona, Lajoki, Linda, and soon the stallion Njord Halsnaes – still in quarantine in Alberta.

“They’re considered Europe’s quarter horse. We used the same breeder in Germany as last time – we knew them and have stayed in contact,” Barnes said.

Journey from Germany The process of their arrival involved a plane trip overseas and weeks spent in quarantine in Calgary; in total, the fjord’s arrival from Germany to Langley took several months.

“When the opportunity came up, there was a lot of back and forth

messages and wire transfers. It’s simpler and cheaper to import them when they’re under two years of age since regulations and documentation are not as extensive, but there are great advantages to importing adult horses already evaluated in their home country,” she said.

All of Barnes’ instructors are certified and the fjord horses serve as the foundation for the horses used for riding lessons that she gives at Footnotes.

“Our biggest focus is safety,” she stressed. “We give offer boarding, give riding lessons in a private lesson format.”

Barnes also sells the fjords to buyers; the largest demographic of

buyers she said is also the largest demographic in the equine industry – women over 55.

“The equestrian community is squeezed by the continued urbanization of the Fraser Valley, but the equestrian community remains robust,” Barnes noted. “The biggest change over the last 20 years has been a growth in recreational riders and trail riders. Certainly, the fjords make great tail horses.”

The newly arrived trio are a long ways away from jumping and galloping with riders on their backs.

Barnes said the biggest goal is to get them acclimatized, introduced to the pasture, and eventually, give birth.

YOUR LOSS OF INCOME CLAIM IS PROTECTED Recent new rules put a $5,500 cap on the pain and suffering compensation you can get for “minor injuries” from car accidents. But these new rules don’t limit the amount of compensation you’re entitled to receive for many other kinds of losses stemming from car accidents.

For example, say the injuries you suffered affect your ability to make a living. You’re still entitled to full compensation from the person who caused the accident for your past income loss plus your impaired future earning ability.

The aim of this compensation is to put you back in the same financial position as if the accident had not happened.

A recent case offers an illustration.

Mandy (not her real name), 59 at the time of the court hearing, had stopped her car on a highway on Vancouver Island to let a deer pass.

Unfortunately, she was rear-ended.

She sustained whiplash-type softtissue injuries which caused her headaches and neck, upper back and shoulder pain.

The driver who caused the accident admitted fault, and so the court needed to decide on compensation for Mandy.

Mandy worked as a registered massage therapist – a physically demanding occupation that typically involved giving hour-long treatments.

She controlled her own work load, since massage therapists were in short supply.

Initially, Mandy had to take some time off work due to the accident. By the time of the court hearing more than four years later, she had improved.

But, despite physiotherapy and other treatments, she still had ongoing neck, upper back and shoulder

problems that restricted her range of motion. Occasional flare-ups made things worse. Medically, she wasn’t likely to improve further.

Before the accident, Mandy saw about 11 or 12 patients a week. By the time of the court hearing, she was working at about the same level. But she found the work more exhausting due to her pain and functional limitations from the accident. She could no longer do deep-tissue massages, and her clientele was limited to women.

The defence argued that, since Mandy was now working as much as before, she shouldn’t get any compensation for less future earning capacity than before. But the court disagreed. It decided Mandy had proved that her future income earning capacity had been reduced by the accident. There was a real and substantial possibility that she’d suffer a financial loss due to her accident impairments.

The court pointed out that the income she might have earned if she wasn’t hurt in the accident, and what would happen now going forward, was uncertain and hypothetical – the court had to consider both positive and negative eventualities.

On the evidence, the court awarded Mandy $55,000 for her past earnings loss and $63,688 for her reduced future earning capacity.

Largy said the crash was reported as a driver error, but no violation ticket was issued.

A Satellite Rotary Club of Langley Central Sunset marked it first year of volunteer projects and community engagement, having only launched last January.

The club is a first of its kind initiative in Rotary District 5050, which comprises clubs throughout the Fraser Valley and the adjacent part of Washington State down to about Bellingham.

Travis Strain, president of the satellite club, said membership dues and fees are significantly lower, and both meetings and projects are geared to needs of younger members with families.

“We’re still all technically members of that club and help Strain out with their events,” Strain said.

“We aim to do about two projects every month on our own; so far, that’s been our bike drive, the kettle drive, poppy drive, cleaning streets and parks.”

Members will be on hand at Mountain Equipment Co-Op for their first project of 2020; to collect warm clothing donations for Gateway of Hope on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Strain said they chose to hold the drive in January because, while donations pour into the Salvation Army throughout December, donations drop off drastically after. But there’s a constant need.

“I couldn’t imagine being outside for the next few weeks,” Stain said. “We’re looking for jackets, gloves, toques, even sweaters.”

The January to May 2020 calendar at FVCE offers a variety of programs in high-employability areas, including bookkeeping and accounting, dental receptionist, and a selection of workshops related to small business and living in the digital age.

As well, many of the same programs always provided are back, such as Microsoft-certified training and basic computer skills, as well as a wide range of art and language classes.

There is a new program for medical office assistants, which marks a return of the curriculum after several year, said office manager Rosset, the one responsible for programming the entire new semester of classes.

“We had a successful Medical Office Assistant (MOA) program for years when we were Langley Continuing Education, and after a bit of a hiatus, Patti Scott and co-instructor Marilyn Lawrie have returned to give us not just the basics, but an Allied MOA program as well,” Rosset said.

“Allied” means everything from chiropractic care, massage therapy, counselling and psychotherapy services, help with addictions, kinesiology

and physiotherapy, and more, Rosset explained.

“Ours is the only program in the Lower Mainland to offer training in this specific area,” she said.

Vivian Ginter said the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society of B.C. was vital to her being able to get to and from her cancer treatments. Her late son can be seen in the background.

Cancer costs The Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society of B.C. (VCDS) relies on donations to provide service to people and recently received help from a Langley resident.

“We have had a private donation of $30,000 of securities from a Langley resident who made the donation through his financial advisor,” said society president Bob Smith. “The donor not only receives a tax receipt but also benefits from not having to pay capital gains tax because the

donation is to a charitable organization.”

He added that the donations will provide funding for a significant number of rides for cancer patients in Langley City and Township. Most cancer patients must go to the BC Cancer Agency centres in Abbotsford, Surrey or Vancouver.

As well, the public stepped up during December to contribute $14,000 through the society’s website.

the registered charity faces increased demand. Another factor is having enough volunteers in the various Lower Mainland communities so the society can fulfill ride requests.

Smith agrees with Vivian Ginter that the drivers are a pretty special bunch of people.

“We have no paid employees, vehicles, facilities or other significant overhead,” he explained. “Over 93 per cent of our $301,000 budget for 2019 is allocated to defray the $0.48/ km vehicle reimbursement provided for drivers. The Canada Revenue Agency allowance is $0.58 km. We are proud to state that we keep our administrative costs extremely low and that our volunteer drivers will donate over $60,000 of the vehicle reimbursement back to the VCDS this year, making them our largest single donor entity.”

Transportation is vital because treatments are timed to be as effective as possible and missed treatments increase the risk of the cancer recurring.

And getting to and from treatments can be difficult for people for various reasons. Many cancer patients from young children to the elderly, have neither a family/friend support network nor the financial means to provide assured transportation to their treatment programs. As well, patients can be too sick to drive themselves or take transport such as cabs to and from treatment.

A Langley not-for-profit is partnering with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to educate seniors about their taxes.

A CRA outreach program is providing free education workshops for seniors this month around Langley, in partnership with the Langley Seniors Community Action Table (LSCAT).

The presentation will cover common types of income for seniors; GST and HST credits; common tax credits and deductions for seniors; CRA services; and scams, according to Sherri Martin, LSCAT’s part-time coordinator.

A national month-long Alzheimer’s awareness campaign aims to reduce stigma for Langley residents affected by dementia.

Alzheimer Society of B.C. is hosting several workshops in the coming months to help people better understand the disease.

Dementia is a term that describes a general group of brain disorders, according to the Alzheimer’s society.

“We want to make sure that people who are diagnosed with dementia, and living with dementia, don’t feel excluded from the community, that they feel included and welcome in their community and that family and friends realize that people can still live well with their dementia for quite some period of time,” said Avalon Tournier, a support and education coordinator with the society.

by Tournier.

“We’re hoping that people will understand that people

who have dementia are unique individuals… we also want to make sure we reduce the stigma,” said Tournier.

The Alzheimer Society of B.C. is offering support groups to help families live well with dementia.

“As with a lot of other illnesses that people are diagnosed with they can still live with a really good quality of life… and they can do that with supports from the community and with education as well from the Alzheimer Society,” explained Tournier.

For more information about resources regarding dementia, or to register for a workshop, people can call 604-449-5000.

“Staff in those resource centres are often busy talking to other caregivers or we can be out presenting education, so we can’t always get back to people right away... but, we always leave on our voice mail the [number for our] Dementia Helpline,” Tournier said.

Valley Ball Hockey Association (VBHA) rounded up old equipment and new players at George Preston Recreation Centre on Sunday.

Craig McDougall, VBHA president, said this was the third year that the organization accepted used equipment that was still in good condition, just no longer being used.

“Existing players with equipment that might not fit anymore or ones that aren’t playing can bring there equipment to us because gear is expensive,” McDougall said.

“And we get brand new kids asking ‘do I need equipment?’ We can match them up with up or simply see what the whatever they need.”

Canada’s men’s volleyball team is Tokyo bound after qualifying for the 2020 Olympics this past weekend in Vancouver; four Trinity Western alums were part of Canada’s winning contingent at the Pacific Coliseum.

Former Spartans Ryan Sclater, Daniel Jansen VanDoorn, Steve Marshall, and Lucas Van Berkel made up nearly 30 per cent of

Canada’s roster that earned three straight wins, beating Mexico, Cuba and Puerto Rico to book their ticket to Tokyo.

Jansen VanDoorn, a Langley native who helped Team Canada nab fifth place at the Rio Olympics in 2016, said he couldn’t have designed a better weekend for himself.

“It was such a special thing and this is probably the highlight of my career so far.

To play in what was probably the best volleyball game I’ve ever been a part of against Cuba, in front of all these people, was just spectacular,” the athlete said. “It’s an amazing feeling.”

The 2020 Olympics are July 24 to Aug. 9.

Illa May Burke Illa May Burke born March 12th, 1932 to Eunice and Carl Lovestead, passed away peacefully at the age of 87 from complications of a hip fracture. Illa is predeceased by her younger sisters Edna (Bill) (Spelay) of Cache Creek and Inez Lovestead of Langley, B.C. Illa and Edna were strong advocates for Inez as she transitioned from Woodlands to Community Living and for a time Inez shared a home with Illa. Over the years Illa was constant in her care of Inez often going to battle for her rights. Illa leaves behind Lesley Douglas (daughters Meghan and Hannah), a close family friend whom she affectionately referred to like a daughter.

Illa married the love of her life Donald (Don) Raymond Burke on July 10,1961 and was predeceased in death by her husband of 42 years.

She was a devoted wife and partner to Don while they ran a machinery business in Abbotsford and more latterly became partners in the running of a dairy and beef farm on ‘O’ Avenue in Aldergrove. They will be fondly remembered as kind, hard-working and responsible farmers who kept their property and buildings in impeccable order and cared for all of their farm animals as family members. Illa was a fierce animal rights advocate, generously donating to numerous animal rights and environmental organizations throughout her life. She will be forever missed for her meticulous keeping of the books and her unwavering love of animals and nature, country music, her treasured family, the sounds of trains passing by and her ever-enduring love for her belated husband.

A‘Celebration of Life’Tea is being held at Aldor Acres (24990 84th Avenue, Langley, B.C.) the home and farm of Illa and Don’s very dear friends, Albert and Dorothy Anderson on Saturday, January 25, 2020 from 11 am to 1pm.

Our Mom was born in Red Deer Alberta on March 13, 1936 and will be lovingly missed by her Family and Friends. May her beautiful soul Rest In Peace forever.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William (Bill) David Ross, on January 4, 2020 at the age of 97.

A long since retired Canadian Forces Warrant OďŹƒcer who enlisted at the young age of 16 in Verdun, QC, bravely served in many battles during his time in the Army from 1939 to 1969, and well known for his golf clubs, stories and humour; Bill will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Bunny (Dwight) of Red Deer, AB; two sons: Ian (Marie) of Langley, BC and Rob (Deborah) of Yellowknife, NT; seven grandchildren: Wayne (Wendy), Daryl, Shelley (Jeremiah), Tyler, Amy (Mark), Shaun, and Tanner (Kudzai); seven great grandchildren: Gaelin, Shylo, Reeve (Olivia), Randy, Maddison (Andrew), Baylee, and George; three great great grandchildren: Jaxon, Jaqueline and Xyden; as well as many relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his loving wife of seventy years, Lois, in 2017; his three brothers: Harry, Jim and Malcolm; and his parents William and Charlotte.

The family would like to express gratitude to the sta of Harrison Landing for their care and compassion toward Bill. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion – Aldergrove Branch (26607 Fraser Hwy) at 2 PM on Thursday, January 16, 2020.

If any so desire, in lieu of owers, memorial donations may be made in Bill’s name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society.

Brian Hagen March 20, 1941 – December 30, 2019 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brian Hagen. He will be lovingly remembered by Averil, his wife of 52 years, his children Heidi (Mike) and Stuart (Jamie), and his grandchildren Cole, Nate, Jordan and Jayna. Also survived by sister Aileen.

Brian was a letter carrier in Langley for 32 years. He loved sports and was President of the Langley Minor Football League in the early 1980’s, and won the Provincial Title while coaching the Pee Wee Division. He and Averil also shared a love of travel, they visited many places; Alaska, Hawaii, France, Croatia, Italy and Spain to name a few.

The family would like to thank the staff at Marwood in LMH for their wonderful care of Brian. No service by request.

Theodora Jacoba (nee van Asselt) McIntosh-Green Theodora Jacoba (nee van Asselt) McIntosh-Green, loving sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away January 5, 2020, in Langley, BC. She was 98 years old. Theodora, or Dora to her friends, was born Feb 2, 1921 in Maartensdyk, The Netherlands. She is survived by her youngest brother Engelbert van Asselt, her Dutch nephews and nieces, her five children, ten grandchildren, and sixteen great grand children. During 1945 Dora was a nurse in training in Utrecht, Holland, when she met her first husband, Sergeant Major Gordon McIntosh of the 5th Medium RCA. She immigrated to Canada as a war bride in 1948. In 1956 she became a Canadian citizen. Dora, Gordon, and their children, Margaret (Jerry), Sandra (Fergus), Lesley (Peter), Jim (Maryanne), and Bob lived in the NDG part of Montreal. In 1963 the family moved from Montreal to the town of Ville De Lery. In the late sixties Dora became a champion 10 pin bowler while playing at Chateauguay Lanes.

In 1969 her husband Gordon died. Dora remained in Lery until her children left home to begin their own lives. In 1980 Dora, with her second husband Ken Green, moved to BC and settled in Langley. Ken died in March 2016.

She was a proud grandmother and great grandmother. She loved her pets, birds, and begonias. She excelled at needle point, was an excellent cook, a baker of apple pies and sugar tarts. She was known to have a sharp mind and loved her crosswords. Her neighbours always got a friendly wave of her hand from the window, as she sat in her favourite chair watching the Canucks, the Lions, or Sunday golf on TV. No service will be held as per her wishes. Donations to LAPS, in her name, will be appreciated. Our special thanks to Langley Memorial Hospital for their compassionate care, and to all her neighbours in the Park, especially Jenny and Doug. Dora will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
