Bringing people together Seniors, youth celebrate at annual gathering Residents of all ages came together to celebrate Christmas a little early. On Dec. 11, the Lifetime Learning Centre held its annual Inter-Generational Christmas Gathering and a large crowd of people came out to join in the fun. The event featured a lunch of turkey and all the trimmings, cooked and served by students at the Fraserview Learning Centre on Seventh Avenue. There was a silent auction, carol singing, best-dressedfor-Christmas contest and plenty of door prizes and

other give-aways. The lunch is a great way for seniors and younger members of the community to gather together. The Lifetime Learning Centre

Society was founded in 1986 by a group of Mission seniors in partnership with Fraser Valley College, now the University of the Fraser Valley. The society

grew rapidly, and in 1989 moved to St. Andrew’s United Church on Grand Street. After 20 years, Lifetime Learning once again found

new quarters in 2009 and now resides in the former Fraserview School on Seventh Avenue in Mission. Over the past quarter century the organization has grown, increasing its membership, its programs and participation. Lifetime Learning Centre Society is a fully independent organization with its own board of directors and staff, who work closely together to carry out a shared vision. LLCS responds to community needs by innovative program development. For more information, visit lifetimelearningcentre.org

Tips to Travel without Busting the Budget lowest. Various apps will send price notifications on flights being tracked. Keep your bags packed and be ready to go when you find your budgeted price.

Even though many people view travel as a luxury, there are plenty of ways to take trips even when money is tight. By prioritizing travel as a goal, cuts can be made elsewhere so there’s money in the budget for vacations. Proper planning, research and a go-with-the-flow attitude can make budget-friendly traveling a realistic possibility. Here’s how to get started. · Maximize your card rewards. If you’re excellent about paying for credit card bills in full each month, shop around for cards that offer the most travel bang for your buck. Hefty sign-on bonus points enable you to rack up travel dollars after a set amount of spending. Those “miles” or “points” can be turned into hotel rooms, airline tickets, rental cars, and more. · Be flexible on travel dates. Set up alerts for when fares drop and be able to leave when rates are the

· Cut lodging costs when possible. Travel to destinations where you know someone and you can enjoy a few nights of free accommodations. Eventwoorthreenightsinsomeone’s guest room or on their sofa can save a few hundred dollars in overall costs. Airbnb and Vacation Rentals By Owner are some additional services that can pair travelers with price-savvy spots to stay. Hostels are dorm-style rooms that also make for cheap accommodations if you don’t need much space or luxury. · Travel a little to travel a lot. The nearest airport may not offer the best deals for your budget. Consider increasing your travel radius several miles and fly out of a different airport and even a smaller one. Also, when booking hotels, look beyond city centers or tourist areas. Rates decrease the further out you go. · Travel together to split the costs. Get a group together and maximize the savings. You may be able to score group rates to events, or you can split the cost of a larger condo or home among all travelers.

What iS ShingleS? Shingles or herpes zoster is a painful rash caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It is the same virus that causes chickenpox. People who got chickenpox earlier can have the virus remain dormant in the cells and reactivate later in life. This can increase the chances of a person getting shingles later in life. Who iS at riSk of getting ShingleS? The incidence of shingles is expected to increase in Canada as people are living longer and fewer children are getting infected due to a great childhood varicella vaccination program. This, however, is resulting in less immunity in adults. There are a few risk factors that can put a person at risk for getting shingles, which include diabetes, COPD, HIV, and kidney disease among others. hoW doeS ShingleS look like? It usually starts as a painful, itchy, stinging skin rash with blisters, which occurs usually on a small area of the body. It can last from 2 to 4 weeks and include a general feeling of unwellness with headaches, fever, and chills. Usually, there are no tests required to diagnose it, as it is pretty distinct looking and your doctor can usually assess and diagnose it clinically. hoW do We treat ShingleS? Shingle can usually be treated with antiviral medications. This has shown to reduce the severity of pain and helps with the healing of the vesicles. Most importantly it can decrease the chances of getting complications. What are Some of the complicationS of ShingleS? There are many complications, but the most common one is something called ‘post-herpetic neuralgia’, which is extreme pain on the affected area, which usually lasts a while after the rash has healed. So Why do We give vaccineS for ShingleS? The vaccines help prevent getting shingles, but most importantly helps prevent the complications, including the ‘post-herpetic neuralgia’. There are currently two types of vaccines available in the market. ZoStavax, which has been in the market for some years, a live attenuated vaccine, meaning it has weakened/ less virulent virus strains. This worked well but studies have shown that it is only effective 50-65% of the time at preventing shingles or the complications above the age of 50 years. It is also avoided in people with weakened immune systems such as HIV, cancer affecting the bone marrow, or people receiving cancer treatment.

Shingrex, a new vaccine in the market, which is 97% effective at preventing shingles, and the immunity is expected to last longer. It is also an ‘inactive vaccine’, so it can be given to people with weakened immune systems and unlike the previous one, can also be given with the flu vaccine. The downsides to this new vaccine are that it does cost around $150 per dose and there are two doses. It also does have more adverse reactions, including fatigue, shivering, fever, redness or swelling, which can stay up to 2-3 days. Tylenol does help control these but they can be troubling. Who Should be getting the vaccine? Overall, it is recommended that the Shingrex vaccine be considered in adults more than 50 years of age, irrespective of if they have had chickenpox or the Zostavax vaccine in the past. It does have its own downsides, like higher cost and more side-effects, but overall it is a much better vaccine than the previous one. It is best to talk to your primary care physician and learn more about the vaccine before making your final decision. -Tarun Soni References: https://immunizebc.ca/shingles https://www.healthlinkbc.ca/health-topics/ hw75433 AAA
