Vision should never be taken for granted. Appreciating one’s sense of sight involves scheduling routine eye exams and taking steps to protect one’s eyes. But safeguarding vision also involves understanding the various conditions that can affect eye health.

Don’t get caught off guard by glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye disorders that can lead to progressive damage to the optic nerve. People who experience glaucoma can lose nerve tissue and eventually suffer vision loss. Understanding what contributes to glaucoma can help people take the steps necessary to reduce their risk.

n imaging tests that look for optic nerve damage that involve a dilated eye examination;

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness for people over the age of 60 – although it can occur at any age. The Mayo Clinic states that many forms of glaucoma produce no warning signs and changes in vision may occur so gradually they are not detected until the condition has reached an advanced stage. There are various types of glaucoma. However, primary open-angle glaucoma is the most common form. Primary open-angle glaucoma occurs when the eye’s drainage canals become clogged over time and fluid cannot drain out of the eye. As a result, intraocular pressure rises and damages the

An eye doctor will conduct various tests to determine if a patient is at risk for glaucoma. The Mayo Clinic says tonometry is commonly used to measure intraocular pressure. During this test, the eye surface will be anesthetized with special drops. A tonometer will be applied lightly to the cornea, indenting it slightly. The resistance will be measured and calculated to determine if pressure is present. Other tests include the following:

an increased risk. Those with thin corneas, which is the outer layer of the eye, also are at an elevated risk of developing glaucoma.

The effects of glaucoma cannot be reversed, but glaucoma can be caught early. Medications and lifestyle changes, like more frequent eye exams, can improve symptoms. Prescription eye drops can reduce the production of aqueous humor (fluid) in the eye and improve outflow of that fluid. Oral medications and surgery are other options as well.

Visiting loved ones in assisted living facilities For many seniors, a day arrives in their lives when it is no longer safe or practical to live at home alone. Assisted living facilities can help seniors adjust to their new situations. Such facilities typically offer comfortable surroundings, caring staff and all the amenities of home. Although fellow residents can provide companionship and friendships can develop over the course of time, assisted living facility residents also enjoy regular visits from family and friends. Some people may feel anxious or awkward visiting assisted living facilities because it may shed light on the frailties or specialized needs of loved ones. This may be especially true if a loved one has a physical, neurological or mental

Time visits right Many residents have the most energy in the morning or early afternoon right after meals. Call ahead to find out if there are any medical appointments or outings planned. Visiting during meals or activities can be fun because you’ll be engaged and will have something to keep both of you busy. Plan an excursion If you are able to take the resident off of the property, arrange to take them somewhere that would interest them. Do not plan too much, because you want the excursion to be fun, not taxing. Bring along items Gifts are not necessary, but photos, books, puzzles, or even keepsakes from home can serve as catalysts for wonderful conversations. Help the conversation along If a loved one has dementia, visits can be especially challenging. However, simply being present can be comforting for the person even if conversation is stilted. Be patient and positive.

policies may not be assignable, which means the benefits cannot be assigned to go to a third party who will file the claim for you (i.e., the funeral home or an assignment company with which the funeral home partners). It’s important to determine if an existing policy is assignable and to take appropriate measures if it is not. Individuals may want to consider burial insurance or pre-need funeral insurance. Another option is to use pre-planning services, which allow people to prepay for funeral expenses and make planning decisions regarding the services and burial so that family members will not be tasked with financing and/ or planning a funeral during a difficult time in their lives.

simple ways to eat healthier every day

Diets can be difficult to navigate. Since no two people are the same, a healthy diet that satisfies one person won’t necessarily satisfy another. Vegetarians might be perfectly happy without chicken or steak, while some people might shudder at the notion of never indulging in the occasional filet mignon.

added sugars, which the Harvard Medical School notes are found in many foods and can include honey, molasses and corn syrup, can increase a person’s risk for various conditions and diseases, including obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Fruit contains fibre that slows the absorption of natural sugars, but the body digests added sugars much more quickly, leading to an uptick in blood sugar levels that can ultimately contribute to diabetes. Added sugars can be found in a host of foods and beverages, including some that aren’t generally considered unhealthy, like bread, certain breakfast cereals and pasta sauces. When shopping, consumers should read nutrition labels and avoid products with excessive amounts of sugar.

While the most effective diets tend to be those that emphasize nutrition while still allowing individuals to indulge in some of their favourite dishes in moderation, the following are three ways that everyone, regardless of their personal preference, can eat healthy every day:

One such study published in 2018 in the medical journal The Lancet Public Health found that diets that got between 50 and 55 per cent of their calories from plant-based carbohydrates like whole grains were associated with a lower risk of mortality than low-carb diets that favoured animal-derived protein sources. I am 50+, I am in pain? What is Physiotherapy and will it help me?

If you are looking at this page, you probably have some pain, an injury or movement limitations keeping you performing your sports, activities like playing with grandkids or living life at an optimum level. Physiotherapy is a health care profession which assists people to restore, maintain and maximize their strength, function, movement, and overall well-being.

Msc PT (SPORTS) U.K

When something like chronic pain strikes in your knee, lower-back, neck or shoulders, or if you experience an injury from sport or exercise - we know it’s very tempting to leave it and hope it’ll simply “go away on it’s own” with time and rest. We also know it’s very easy to reach into the back of the cupboard for the painkillers, and take them whenever pain strikes so it eases off fast - but all those painkillers are not good for your health long-term, and do nothing but mask the pain instead. Or, maybe you’re left feeling confused, even sceptical because you’ve seeked advice from other Healthcare professionals, or a Physio in the past, and nothing they seemed to say or do helped. The first thing you need to know “about” Get Well Physiotherapy is that we can help you, and we can help you in less time than you expect. Feel free to contact us on 6048522746 Or do free pain screening at www.getwellphysiotherapy.org

How do hearing aids work? Are there things I can do to treat my hearing loss?

At their most basic, hearing aids are microphones that convert sound into electrical signals. An amplifier increases the strength of the signal, then a receiver (speaker) converts it back to sound and channels it into the ear canal through a small tube or earmold. A battery is necessary to power the hearing aid and to enable amplification. There are alterative forms of treatment for hearing loss (instead of hearing aids), although only 5% of hearing loss in adults can be improved medically or surgically. It all depends on the type of hearing loss you have experienced. There are three types: 1. Sensorineural: The most common type, it occurs when the inner ear nerves (and hair cells) are damaged and do not properly transmit auditory signals to the brain. Can be treated with hearing aids.

2. Conductive: Is typically the result of obstructions in the ear. Can usually be treated medically 604-855-8722 or surgically. 103-2825 Clearbrook Road Garden Park Tower 3. Mixed: A combination of www.robertsonhearing.ca sensorineural and conductive.
