The 2019 Abbotsford Business Excellence Awards gala took place on Nov. 21, and 14 local businesses were recognized at the masquerade-themed event. Since 1996, more than 260 awards have been presented at one of the largest events in Abbotsford. Since its inception, the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce and the Abbotsford News have presented the awards. Eighty nominated businesses, organizations and individuals gathered with over 500 friends, families, co-workers and other leaders in Abbotsford for the awards gala. The following 14 businesses and individuals were recognized, joining the long and growing prestigious group of past winners.

Their Curo Plant business brings great new plants from breeders all over the world and licenses them to 19 partners under their Bloomin’ Easy brand.

Christine arrived in Abbotsford in 1974 and has volunteered for many organizations and charities as a fundraiser, volunteer, presenter, director and historian. She is currently a judge at the Fraser Valley Regional Heritage Fair, works with a French immersion speaking group she started, volunteers at the MCC and is working with The Reach and UFV history students on a website to compile the history for Philip Sheffield School.

ABBOTSFORD HOSPICE SOCIETY
In 2016 Abbotsford Hospice Society opened the doors to Holmberg House, Abbotsford’s adult hospice. Staff and volunteers support persons-in-care and their families through a variety of therapies and giving that precious gift of time to listen to a person’s life story. Holmberg House has served over 325 individuals who live at the adult hospice until they die. Over 200 volunteers support those in their care and their families during this difficult time, whether it be holding a hand, baking cookies in the family kitchen, helping patients eat or simply sitting quietly with someone. These volunteers are the backbone of the support services they provide.

Lully’s has four items on the menu, but really there’s just one: the footlong Nathan’s all-beef frankfurter (hotdog) served on a custom pretzel bun. All the toppings are homemade, except the sauerkraut. It’s located by the entrance of the Abbotsford Canadian Tire, starting five years ago with a small pop up tent, growing to a large permanent enclosure with seating for 64 customers. Abbotsford has been good to Lully’s, so they give back to the community, including raising $4200 for Jumpstart to provide kids with equipment and registration costs for sports clubs.
