The gift of literacy for Christmas Reading is for life!

We are looking for books for all ages, from baby board books to adult books. Preschool and youth, ages 10-14 years old, is the age range we really need books for. These books will be given as gifts, so, if they are used, they need to be in excellent condition with no torn pages or marks inside.

There are many ways to get involved: you can comb your bookshelves and perhaps you’ll find some gently used books to donate; you can purchase a brand new book for any age and drop it off at Kootenay Savings in Invermere, Sobeys or Valley Foods; you can ask friends that read to donate; and you can spread the word about A Book Under Every Tree.

Donating a book to this campaign is a simple and rewarding way to spread the joy of reading in our community.

Submitted by Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy A Book Under Every Tree is a partnership campaign between the Christmas Bureau and the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL). CBAL collects new and gently used books to include with the Christmas Hampers so more families will have books this holiday season. There are many books distributed each year, over 300, and 2/3 of them go to children under 18.

This campaign gets books into the hands of children in our community. Reading is enriching and enlightening, but only if you have a book! Parents who read have children who read. Reading to your children right from birth is a great way to create a connection that is a fun way to bond and be together after a busy day. Reading to young children helps them to develop skills they need to become effective learners once they enter school.

Red Apple hosted a toy drive over the past two weeks, culminating in a special one-day fundraiser event last Saturday, December 7th. The event raised almost $4,000. Red Apple was grateful for the wonderful community support and all the generous people who donated to the fundraiser for the Christmas Bureau of the Columbia Valley.

The Christmas Bureau is a non-profit organization that raises funds to purchase gifts for families in need at Christmas time in the Columbia Valley. The bureau, founded in 1992, has helped an average of 252 families each Christmas. All funds raised are spent locally. You can help by sponsoring individuals or families, making a flat donation, assembling a gift bag, donating any new items suitable for gift bags, or picking up a gift tag from one of the three angel trees to buy a gift for a child or senior. Angel trees are located at Main Street Fun and Games, Fields and Red Apple. The deadline for gifts to be bought, wrapped and returned to the store is Friday, December 13th.

There are also table top trees for sale at Valley Foods and Invermere Home Hardwar, with proceeds going directly to the program.

VALLEY NEWS Jam fam set to expand sweet and spicy empire

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Saunders Family Farm may be growing exponentially, but they’re still very much a family business.

Case in point: during his chat with the Pioneer, Tanner Saunders turned from the phone to his mother, Faith, a couple times to double check what she and his father, Gordon, are ready to share.

The local jam and jelly company is moving into a facility in Athalmer (109 Industrial Road #2) that is three times the size of their current operating space. When they move in March, they will add new equipment, upgrade their existing equipment and open a retail space.

Right now they’re churning out two batches a day from their 80-gallon kettle, but no matter how much jam and jelly they produce, their customers gobble it up.

“It’s not enough. We can’t keep up,” Tanner said. “We’re shipping pallet orders constantly.”

While he said red and green pepper jellies are common in “any of the big box stores,” he added that variety is “what separated us from the pack.” The company’s flavours include cranberry jalapeno, blackberry pepper, raspberry pepper, pineapple jalapeno and their newest flavour – a spicy sour cherry.

“We find that new generations are picking them up like crazy,” he said.

Older folks take a little persuasion, but he said they’re quick to switch their allegiances once they’ve had a taste.

He said his family’s jams and jellies are in all Sobeys and Safeway stores in Western Canada, in Co-op grocery stores, in Save-On-Foods and in Hickory Farms. On January 1st, they’ll be starting up with a new distributor, Curve – a company that will take their

products across the provinces and all the way into Ontario. In the fall, they’ll be looking for distribution even further east. Through one of their partners, they’re working to get into the United States as well.

Around seven years ago, the family started with a booth at the farmers’ market, and their success ever since has been sticky and sweet.

“It feels surreal. I feel very accomplished. We put so much time and energy and sacrifice into this business,” Tanner said. “How it’s happening is we’re kind of schmoozers.

The market likes the product. The branding is good . . . We really don’t know how big it will get.”

They aren’t going after the world at this point, although China keeps calling.

“We’re fully not ready for that yet . . . Sometimes people try to get too big too fast,” he said, adding that his family is generally going to take business one step at a time with the exception of the new facility which is “like three steps ahead.”

Once their new space is gutted, renovated and ready for them to lease, he expects the Saunders Family Farm team will double and go up to 14 employees. They can more than double their production at their new space, going up to 5,000 jars a day.

“We’ll definitely be able to keep up with demand . . . and the projections for the future,” he said.

Also in the future are charcuterie boards and another brand-new jelly.

Thanks to a suggestion from a farmers’ market customer of theirs, Saunders Family Farm will be offering custom boards in all kinds of sizes from those for couples to those for massive gatherings. The boards can be up to eight feet by four feet, which he said is roughly the size of a door. Staff could show up an hour before a host is expecting guests and will arrange an elaborate display with meats, cheeses, fruits and spreads.

Slide blocks highway in Fairmont Hot Springs

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Canal Flats resident Wayne Walters was on the bus headed to work on Thursday, December 5th, when a rockslide all of a sudden crashed down the slopes of the hoodoos, stopping traffic and shutting down the highway.

“We came around the corner of the hoodoos and it was like a wall of fog,” he said. “It was still rolling down the mountain, it was like a whiteout condition, and kind of eerie.”

Fellow bus rider Joseph Trozzo told the Pioneer the incident was “very sad and scary, and all we saw was a thick cloud.”

Mr. Trozzo has been riding the bus for 10 years, and has never seen anything like this before.

The slide on Hwy 93, between Dutch Creek Road and Westside Road in Fairmont Hot Springs, happened before 8 a.m. Thursday, December 5th, and started probably a second or two before the BC Transit bus came around the corner, Mr. Walters estimates. The bus driver immediately stopped. Once the view started to clear up a bit, he inched forward to see what had happened.

“A rock was in the middle (of the road). A pickup truck was caught on the side – sitting over top of the rocks, pushed against the barricade,” Mr. Walters said. He figures the driver was OK as the truck door was open. “If we were just a few seconds sooner, we probably would’ve been with that truck.”

The road was covered with a couple big rocks, smaller ones and even trees, Mr. Walters describes.

This past week, December 2nd through December 8th, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 36 calls for service. The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to.

• On Monday, December 2nd at about 9:45 a.m., the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a two-vehicle motor vehicle incident on Highway 93/95 near Windermere. The driver of a southbound Chevrolet Spark reportedly swerved to avoid a Cadillac Escalade that had pulled onto the highway in front of the Chevrolet. The two vehicles collided, resulting in both vehicles going into the ditch. The driver and passenger of the Chevrolet and the driver and lone occupant of the Cadillac suffered minor injuries. During the course of the investigation, the investigating officer entered into an impaired driving investigation with the driver of the Chevrolet. The driver provided two breath samples which were above the legal limit. As a result, the driver of the Chevrolet was served a 90-day driving prohibition and compelled to attend court at a later date to face impaired driving charges. The driver of the Cadillac was served a violation ticket for failing to yield on a left turn.

• On Friday, December 6th, a resident reported falling victim to a Facebook scam.

The individual received a message from a Facebook friend who advised her of a federal government grant for individuals over a certain age. The individual was required to transfer $3,500 to a foreign account which was believed to be an application fee. The individual later discovered her friend’s Facebook account had been hacked and she had fallen victim to an online scam. The individual is now working with her bank in an attempt to recover the funds.

• On Friday, December 6th at about 6:30 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a single-vehicle motor vehicle incident on Westside Road near Brisco. The driver of a GMC pickup had lost control of the truck and slid into a ditch. The driver of the truck was uninjured and the truck had only minor damage.

• On Saturday, December 7th at about 3:30 p.m., an officer was conducting patrols in Canal Flats when a Honda Civic with loud exhaust caught his attention.

The officer conducted a check of the license plate and discovered the plate was invalid. The officer conducted a traffic stop with the vehicle and discovered the driver had an expired driver’s license and was not able to produce insurance for the vehicle. The driver was issued a violation ticket for no driver’s license and no insurance. The vehicle was impounded and will need to be inspected before returning to the road.

. . . ‘Slide’ from 3 A Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure spokesperson reported that an “earth slope failure” brought approximately 200 cubic metres of rock, including two large earth boulders, down on the road along with some trees that came down the slope.

Maintenance contractor Mainroad East Kootenay secured the scene with traffic control while a geotechnical team came from Nelson to assess the site.

The road was closed until the geotechnical team determined it was safe to reopen to single-lane alternating traffic at approximately 4 p.m., then opened both lanes just before 7 p.m..

“The ministry appreciates the patience of all road users while the roadway was impacted throughout cleanup,” the ministry wrote via email.

Columbia-River Revelstoke MLA Doug Clovechok lives just around the corner from where the slide took place. He was in Revelstoke on MLA business when the slide occured. Speaking by phone from Revelstoke, Mr. Clovechok said he has lived in the Columbia Valley basically his whole life, and that this is the first slide of this magnitude he has seen coming from the hoodoos.

“With the exception of a few rocks coming off, I’ve never seen anything that big before,” he said.

Mr. Clovechok said this incident will give local drivers a sense of what it feels like in the Revelstoke region when they need to travel through Three Valley Gap, as they have concerns about rockslides throughout the year on that section of the Trans-Canada Highway.

He said he cannot answer whether this could be a going concern for the stretch of highway between Westside Road and Dutch Creek Road. However, he said, he will be in touch with the Ministry of Transportation on

the subject.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada and The Nature Trust of BC manage the Hoodoos Conservation Area.

They released a statement December 5th regarding the park: “Due to the erosion event on December 5 that has ourtrust.org blocked Highway 95 near Fairmont Hot Springs, the Nature Conservancy of Canada and The Nature Trust of BC have closed access to the Dutch Creek Hoodoos Conservation Area and the Hoodoos trailhead parking lot. The organizations request the public’s support in respecting these closures, which will remain in effect until further notice.”

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Saunders Family Farm is making a conscious choice to stay in the Columbia Valley, even as their business grows beyond the traditional boundaries of a small-town operation.

It is a big deal when someone takes a brave leap into starting or buying a small business. It is a big deal when that business grows. And it is a very big deal when, once that business has a choice to expand, the owners still choose to stay where it all began.

The business darling of the Columbia Valley is undoubtedly Kicking Horse Coffee. Starting from a garage and now built up to an international coffee celebrity, the Kick Ass company has stayed in the valley too, busting out of its seams as more employees are hired to meet the demands of the ever-growing company. Likely there are other places that have courted the coffee company, but Kicking Horse has stayed and excelled in the valley, netting an international owner with Lavazza in 2017, and even earning accolades as 2018’s best workplace in Canada (based on employee feedback and an in-depth review of the organization’s culture).

As great as the Columbia Valley is, there are challenges to running a business here, such labour shortages and housing shortages for employees, distribution puzzles to solve and getting your product / business the attention it so deserves in a wider market.

So why not say thanks to area businesses - small and large - that choose to own and operate their businesses here? Stop heading to the big city for your Christmas shopping. When you shop local, you are literally supporting your neighbours, your kid’s hockey coach, your friends and family. Local businesses give back to the community all the time, from support for places like the food bank or the Christmas Bureau, to countless donations for auctions, families facing a crisis, and in other ways we will never know or see as the general public.

Buy some Kicking Horse Coffee or Stolen Church coffee to have at your Christmas brunch. Add some locally handcrafted items from any one of our artisan shops to your gifts list. Last words by election candidate Dear Editor: As a candidate for the Green Party in the recent federal election, I had the privilege of spending time in communities across the district over the course of my campaign. What is striking and what we have in common across each of our communities is the incredible beauty of this region – a beauty that for many of us reinforces a desire and commitment to live here. What is also striking, however, is the diversity in the character, history, and economies of the communities united within this federal political boundary.

Meeting people and listening to the stories, issues, needs, successes and sources of pride in each community was humbling and inspiring. Common themes I heard include housing, the environment, reconciliation, and employment vulnerability, each with their own local flavour. Equally inspiring were the youth with whom I was able to spend time, many of whom are leading efforts in their respective communities to enable livable futures for themselves and all creatures.

Elections, like social media, can bring out the best and the worst in people. Canada’s first-past-the-post system is suitable for a two party system and necessarily creates division and dysfunction in a multi-party system. Nevertheless I believe that a multi-party system is a sign of a healthy democracy that allows the space for a multiplicity of perspectives and priorities. I was remind-

ed of this at each of the all-candidate forums, where I had the opportunity to listen to and reflect on the policies, priorities and perspectives of each candidate. The art of politics, and what now falls to Rob Morrison as our elected Member of Parliament, is to discern the path forward that achieves the best compromise that seeks to enable all of us to live together peacefully and well.

Living peacefully and well, alongside our fellow citizens, is harder to do when elections and social media generate acrimony and discord. Each challenge we face, whether it is very personal or more communal in nature, is easier to overcome when we can draw on the communities that are not just a factor of geographic proximity but are based in generosity, patience, and kindness – in relationships.

I am grateful to every person who connected with me over the course of the campaign and shared your thoughts and hopes. I am profoundly grateful to all those who volunteered on my campaign, to those who chose to display one of my signs, and to those who voted for me, sharing my excitement for the vision held by the Green Party of Canada. As for me, I shall continue to find ways to work within and contribute to the people and communities of this precious place we all call home.

These days Black Star Studios is overflowing with holiday spirit that just might rub off on anyone who enters the shop.

Natalie Ruby, co-owner, said classes and workshops are running all Christmas break to give everyone a chance to make their own art.

“We always love getting creative,” she said, adding that it’s extra exciting this time of year. “It’s a fun time in this valley in this cute little town.”

Whether customers want to make their own artwork or shop the store’s handmade selection, she said you can never go wrong with a handmade gift.

“Being creative is super fun, and I think giving handmade gifts is a great idea.

We have people who come in here and make art and give that as a gift,” she said.

“There’s no question that it’s a thoughtful gift when you make it yourself. It’s usually handmade with love, which is something you can be proud of.”

Black Star Studios is offering enough workshops to keep all the valley’s elves busy painting snowmen or wintery scenes, making wreaths, and glazing or molding festive ornaments. You can even design

your own ugly (or very lovely) Christmas sweater.

“You can bring your own sweater or we’ll provide one and you just get it all festive for the holiday season,” she said.

“They’ll add some tinsel or they’ll cut out some snowmen or they’ll make their winter wonderland scene on their sweater using felt and bows and whatever we can get our hands on.”

Customers can sign up for any of the workshops, nab gift certificates for a special someone’s stocking or book private workshops. Still need an idea for your staff party? They do those too.

“It’s a good way to get in the spirit of Christmas and enjoy each other’s company while doing something creative and handmade,” she said. “People really, really love it. Sometimes they like to have an experience rather than just a gift.”

Some families enjoy making holiday art together so much that they include a trip to Black Star Studios as one of their winter requirements.

“We’ve got lots of families that make it a tradition. We’re looking forward to seeing the kids again for the holidays,” she said.

Local high school student Kate Hale recently entered a contract with Taynton Bay Spirits to use her painting of the Lake Windermere Whiteway on their tea tins. Four different flavours of teas are available: ginger matcha, orange turmeric, strawberry herbal and blueberry rooibos.

Customers can buy tea alone or vodka-based spirits infused with the teas.

Theresa Wood, Taynton Bay’s Director of Sales and Marketing, saw Kate’s rendition of The Whiteway on Toby Creek Nordic’s Facebook page and contacted the artist. For several years, the company has been working with The Naked Leaf in Calgary, which makes up their custom tea blends. Naked Leaf has been featuring Calgary artists on their packaging and Ms. Wood thought it would be novel to feature a local artist. It wasn’t a hard sell to convince her company’s owners.

“The partners really liked it, especially because we’re so close to The Whiteway,” Ms. Wood said. “It’s a really nice product and a really nice piece of art. People can take it away and bring it home with them. There aren’t a lot of souvenirs that highlight the area.”

Kate is a member of the Toby Creek Nordic Club and was already donating ten percent of her sales of The Whiteway notecards to the club.

“I love the Whiteway. In general, I just love skiing and anything outside that’s exercise,” said Kate.

Being a busy student also very involved in sports, Kate sometimes gets up early in the morning to paint.

Other times she will spend all weekend painting.

Referring to this opportunity for commercial success Kate said, “It’s really great for me because it gives me more exposure. It’s just not people from Invermere that will get the tea but people from other places will see my artwork. I want to get good at marketing myself, because the business side of art is important. It was really exciting.”

Looking ahead, Kate said, “I’m passionate about it and want to be an artist. I have experience with it now – keeping track of money and learning about having a business.”

Her art can be found at Tumbled Earth in Kimberley, Pleaides Spa and Friends of Kootenay in Radium, and Black Star and Village Arts in Invermere.

The painting was done earlier this year. Kate worked from about 20 pictures she took in different lights. The original acrylic on canvas piece hangs on her grandmother’s living room wall. As the granddaughter of well-

When asked if she had any last thoughts, Kate expressed her thankfulness for community support of young artists. Being involved with the Kootenay Savings calendar, Art from the Heart at Pynelogs and the high school art competition were valuable experiences along the way. She credits her “heroes at Black Star” and art teachers Patrick Yesh, Betty Segstro and Susan Fahrni along with Purcell Mountain Painters for encouragement and expertise.

Vicki Roberts’s insides are unrecognizable from a year ago.

“I was like the girl that looked like she had it all together but I was like an absolute mess on the inside. I didn’t believe that I was a beautiful person, believe that I deserved good things,” she said. “Every weekend was the same: work, booze, poor food choices and minimal sleep.

What I didn’t realize was I was making things worse and if I didn’t love myself then no one else would either.”

Ms. Roberts went into “a tailspin” when she and her husband separated and when her panic attacks and anxiety increased. The days were darkest when she didn’t have her kids – aged 16, 13 and 9 – and she would try to drink her stresses away.

“I was drowning my sorrows or whatever you want to call it with alcohol and I realized that wasn’t any way to be dealing with things. And if I didn’t want to ever lose my relationship with my children and if I wanted to be a role model for them to look up to, I needed to make some way smarter choices,” she said.

With those goals in mind, and with some added incentive from a weight-loss challenge with her coworkers at Horsethief Creek Pub and Eatery, she committed to doing better and signed up for a fitness competition.

With a lot of determination, along with support from her trainer, family and friends, Ms. Roberts lost 70 pounds in eleven months, developed loads of new muscles, went for counselling, read self-help materials and weaned herself off her medication.

While she said she used to yell at her children and lose her temper when she was frustrated, she’s become much calmer.

“I don’t lose my mind, and I don’t lose my cool anymore. I feel much more put together and grounded,” she said.

Her children agree and say their mom is in much better spirits these days.

Ms. Roberts also feels strong and capable. In November, the 39-year-old placed 5th in an International Drug Free Athletics fitness model competition in Calgary.

“It feels incredible. I still feel like I’m on cloud nine,” she said about her experience in the competition. “Now I feel really confident – and it’s not because I’ve lost all this weight and I have this like supermodel body or anything like that – but I feel confident and strong because I know that I’ve set goals and I’ve reached them and that I’m proving not only to myself but to others that if you set goals and work hard and ask for help that anything’s attainable.”

Submitted photo Now that she believes she can do whatever she sets her mind to, she’s asking even more from herself and will continue training five days a week to prepare for another fitness competition in the spring.

“I plan to build more muscle and sculpt my body even more. I want to become even stronger than I am today,” she said. “My transformation has not only changed my body, but it has made me much stronger mentally as well. It has made me realize my worth.”

And because of this new kindness she’s found for herself, she feels like she can be a better mom, coworker and friend.

At the dinner table she asked her children how they feel about her changes.

Katelyn, 13, told her: “It makes me proud, mom, that you don’t drink booze as much and to see how far you’ve come with changing how your body looks. And you seem happier. When you competed in Calgary, it made me feel very lucky to have such a positive role model in my life.”

With her fitness, family and self-care goals achieved, Ms. Roberts hopes to inspire others with her story.

“I’m just an average person,” she said, adding that she’s a single mom, who works full time and has a busy schedule, but that she was still able to build a much happier and healthier life.

“When you set your mind to something and want to make healthy changes, it can be done. It’s hard work but it can be done,” she said. “Don’t ever short yourself.

RRSP Tips for Retirees Submitted by Sara Worley & Brendan Donahue Investment Advisors, Manulife Securities Incorporated Just as there are different stages in a person’s working years, there are different stages in retirement. When a person reaches age 72 there are very few things that can be done to affect their taxable income. There are, however, a few strategies that younger retirees should explore to ensure they take advantage of all tax-savings opportunities available to them as they approach age 72.

Pension Income Tax Credit The Pension Income Tax Credit is available to all Canadians with qualified pension income. This credit makes the first $2,000 of qualified pension income tax-free.

Those who don’t have an employer-sponsored pension plan can create their own pension income. This can be done in the year the person turns 65 by converting all or a portion of their Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) to a Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) and deregistering at least $2,000 from the RRIF each year.

The transaction will be subject to withholding tax upon deregistration; however, the credit is applied on one’s tax return. This is a simple way to get a little money out of an RRSP tax-free.

Pension Splitting As of the 2007 tax year, Canadian residents have been able to split up to 50 per cent of eligible pension income with their resident spouse or common-law partner. This tax move is available to all Canadians who receive qualified pension income and works best if spouses are in different tax brackets.

No funds are actually transferred using pension splitting. It is simply a method for reducing the taxable income of one spouse by allocating income, on the tax return, to the other, lower-taxed spouse.

Early RRSP withdrawals The year a person turns 71 their RRSPs must be converted into RRIFs. The following calendar year, they must begin withdrawing from their RRIFs at a rate determined

by the government. This can cause tax problems for people with higher taxable income, as their RRIF income might be taxed in a higher bracket than their other income, or their Old Age Security (OAS) benefits might be clawed back.

Because of these potential consequences, all young retirees should explore the possibility of deregistering some of their RRSPs before age 72.

To see if early deregistration would be advantageous, try an income projection. This can be done by calculating all forms of taxable income now and at other points in retirement where one’s income might change, such as ages 65 and 72. Ask yourself, How will all my pensions, government benefits and RRIF minimum withdrawals affect my taxable income down the road? Could my tax situation be maximized by early de-registration?

In-kind withdrawals Retirees who are de-registering funds from their RRIF for tax purposes alone might consider transferring funds inkind to another investment account instead of taking the funds in cash. This manoeuvre can save trading fees if the person wants to continue owning the same investments.

Is GIS an option?

The Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) is an income-tested pension program offered by the federal government. For 2019, individuals earning less than $18,600 and couples earning less than $24,576 of combined taxable income, excluding OAS benefits, qualify for some GIS. Some people find themselves in a unique situation where they are able to restructure their finances to receive GIS. The strategy could involve deregistering one’s RRSPs prior to age 65 and investing the proceeds in a TFSA, or deregistering RRSPs before life expectancy in order to capture GIS later in life. If you think this might be an option for you, speak with your financial advisor.

Final thoughts While there is no way to avoid taxation completely, people in the early stage of retirement have many options available to them which could significantly lower their tax bill now and in the future. Be sure to ask your financial advisor and accountant about all the options available to you.

The Christmas Bureau of the Columbia Valley is a non-profit organization that provides assistance to families in need over Christmas. Everyone should be able to celebrate the season without the added stress and financial burden that often comes with it, so each family is provided a grocery gift card, a small box of “goodies” and a gift for children aged 12 and under and a gift certificate for teens 12 through 18. In order to do this, the generous support of the Columbia Valley community is needed. There are a variety of ways you can help: 1. Sponsor an individual or family (or families) at a cost of $100-$300/ family depending on the family size. This means you provide the funds to cover the cost of the grocery gift card and also assemble a wrapped gift box of goodies (shoe-box size). If you are unable to assemble the gift box, there is an option to provide an additional $25 to cover that cost.

2. Make a flat donation to the Christmas Bureau.

3. If you are not able to provide funds to cover the cost of the grocery certificate but you want to help, you may choose to donate a box of “goodies”.

4. Donate any items that would be suitable to enclose in a gift box, such as candy, baking, toothbrushes, soaps, dish/face cloths, games, puzzles, crayons, coloring books, scratch tickets, homemade items, etc. These items will then be used by the volunteers to make “goodie” boxes for any unsponsored families.

5. Visit one of the Angel trees at Fields, Red Apple or Main Street Fun and Games, pick up a tag and purchase a gift for a child and/or senior. Return wrapped and labeled gifts to the store by December 13th.

The duo collaborated in 2018 on a five-unit semi-detached home project on Pioneer Avenue in Radium. In 2017, Mr. Newman and TRC’s owner Kevin Blackwell partnered to build Edelweiss, a six-home project in the same community. Now they have their sights on building another eight-unit non-strata, semi-detached home project.

The Revelstoke bungalow homes is located at the end of a cul-de-sac, across the street from the 10th hole of the Radium Springs Golf Course and backed by a peaceful, heavily-treed area.

“This next project on Revelstoke Avenue is one of our best locations that we’ve been a part of in Radium,” said Mr. Blackwell.

The bungalows feature 1,100 square feet on the main floor plus another 895 feet in the fully developed basement, with three bedrooms, or three plus a den, a great room upstairs, rec room down, and 2.5 bathrooms.

The homes have Insulated Concrete Form walls: “a far superior foundation for maintaining heat than a conventional foundation” Mr. Blackwell explains. Other energy efficiency measures include high-quality windows and extra insulation in the walls.

They feature a washer, dryer and master bedroom on the main floor, an ensuite with double sinks, a walkin-closet, and an open kitchen with stainless steel appliances and quartz countertops. They expect homeowner

possessions to start in January through August of 2020.

Pricing is from $399,000 to $439,000, including GST. All the units at Edelweiss and Pioneer Avenue sold, so it is clear Mr. Blackwell knows what homeowners are looking for in new home purchases.

“They’re looking for value, and they’re looking for non-strata properties . . . and more energy efficient homes,” Mr. Blackwell, who has been in the real estate business nearly 20 years, said.

At the same time as the Revelstoke bungalows project is under construction, Mr. Blackwell and Mr. Newman are collaborating on two single family homes on Jackson Ave, priced at $499,000 and $519,000. The homes include a triple car garage, with 1,800 square feet living space over two floors, big yards, and the ability to choose customized colours in their brand new home.

Mr. Blackwell likes building homes in Radium Hot Springs.

“It’s a great municipality to work with. They’re open for business, they like to see development happening.

The council is supportive of what we’ve been doing. The administration is very professional and great to work with,” Mr. Blackwell said. “They have reasonable service costs to build, versus in Invermere [which has] certainly a lot more red tape and higher cost for subdividing property.”

TRC Projects and Kris Newman Building Construction have already begun construction on the Revelstoke bungalows, and will have a full showroom open in the new year. They are offering a sneak preview on Saturday, December 21st. From 12-4 p.m. the showroom will be open at 7555 Revelstoke Avenue, Radium Hot Springs.

Double wins for Rockies

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com With two home games last weekend, local fans played witness to back-to-back victories for the Columbia Valley Rockies.

The Rockies took to the ice Friday, December 6 against the Castlegar Rebels. While the Rebels stole the first goal, Rockies’ Greg Parker, assisted by Brennan Nelson and Khale Skinner, didn’t let the scoreboard sit unbalanced for long. Castlegar earned another goal a few minutes later, but the Rockies’ Gavin Fleck (assisted by Jonathan Milligan and Loclyn Kabatoff) answered back with only 1:49 left on the clock, ending an exciting first period.

Both teams were matched up tight in the second period with no goals scored. But in the third, the Rockies took the Rebels to the rails, dropping a whopping four more goals past the opposing team, while Castlegar netted one more, ending the game 6-3 for the Rockies.

Saturday, December 7 the Nelson Leafs brought their best but the Rockies reigned with a 4-3 win. The first and second period were Tristan Lambert’s for the taking, tossing two in the net for the Rockies in the first two periods.

The third period saw the Leafs try to catch up with a goal in less than a minute into the third, then another at just under 6 minutes left on the clock. Rockies’ Gavin Fleck wasn’t about to let the Leafs get the lead, scoring a minute later with assists from Jonathan Milligan and Tristan Lambert. The Leafs tied up the scoreboard, ending the third 3-all. Brennan Nelson wouldn’t let the hometown fans down that night, nabbing the Rockies a win in overtime with a goal assisted by Tristan Lambert and Alex Novakowski.

Come cheer on the Rockies this Friday, December 13 at the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena as they take on the KIJHL leaders, the Kimberley Dynamiters, sitting at 47 points so far this season. The Rockies are holding their own with 26 points, placing them fourth in the Eddie Mountain Division. Saturday, December 14 the Rockies head to Nelson to face the Leafs again.

MINOR HOCKEY MINUTE Submitted by Windermere Valley Minor Hockey Society This weekend the Midgets travelled to Pincher Creek to participate in their first away tournament of the season.

They played the host team for the first game, and they were the first to score 8 minutes in. A fast paced, evenly matched game, the kids were able to answer back 3 and a half minutes later, with two goals in 40 seconds.

Regulation ended at 4-4 and into the shootout: 3 shots by each team and no score, so a sudden death shootout started. The fourth shooter came close but didn’t score, and Pinchers’ fourth shooter managed to find the back of the net to take the win! A nail biter to the end with a lot of good hard hockey to be watched. Their second game paired the Midgets up with Red Deer. The kids came out fired up and ready to play. In the third, Grayson Mitzel scored his first goal, and only allowed Red Deer to score one more, giving them a win of 8-2.

The third game didn’t quite go their way. They played the Sikisika Buffaloes, and they lost 7-0. The Sikisika goalie was on fire and sneaking anything past him seemed highly challenging. Sunday was the rematch against the host team, where they were battling for Bronze. This was one of the most exciting and fastpaced games this team has played all year. Both goalies were peppered with shots all game and made some amazing replay-worthy saves. Neither team let up for even a moment. At the end of regulation they had a 0-0 game. The kids played hard, striving to take that win. Unfortunately Pincher Creek managed to get a squeaker of a goal during a scrum in the front of the net and took the win with 1:47 left in OT. Parker Nichol played phenomenally all weekend.

This weekend was some of the best hockey the Midgets team has played, they finally played as a team, making passes and setting up plays and working together as a unit, in a way they haven’t all season. Hopefully this means they are starting to become a solid team, ready to work together as one, to take this team to a level to match their potential.

The Sr Girls played two games against Lakoca (which is a team from Lacombe and Panoka). They

were a well-matched team but our girls fell short in both games for the wins.

The Bantam boys played a hard game against Creston on the weekend and ended up winning 7-5. Goals were scored by Carson Jefferson (3), Lukas Pfisterer (2), and Leif Dubreuil (2). Assists were by Connor Von Niessen, Adam Kubian, Carson Jefferson, Braxton Gulliford (2) and Leif (2). It was a great game. The boys are off to Kimberley next weekend for a tournament.

The Atom A lost 5-0 against Kimberley. Nicholas Buttle, a Novice goalie, stepped in as the Atom goalie was sick. He played excellent in his first game on full ice.

The Peewee B team played in a Kimberley tournament. They lost 4-1 to Kimberley Friday. The Player of the Game was Keegan Kelly. Saturday they played Cochrane and won 7-0. Player of that Game was Finnegan Donahue. In the afternoon they played Banff and lost 11-4. The Player of the Game was Myles Altmann.

Sunday they played Claresholm and won 7-4, putting them in the final. The Player of the Game was Tegegn Booth. In the Final, they lost 5-2 against Trails West, winning silver medals.

The EK Bantam Zone team travelled to Penticton, where their 9 game win streak was broken in a shootout, keeping them out of the final. Both Eric Fanderl and Ryan had a shutout during the round robin. The team ended up winning the bronze medal in overtime.

Hunting for help with Hoops program

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com An after-school basketball program is at risk of shutting down if more volunteers are not found soon.

The Steve Nash Youth Basketball program offers local kids from kindergarten to grade 7 the chance to learn basketball skills in a fun, supportive environment. The program is in need of a coach for the Kindergarten to grade 3 program, while the grade 4-7 program has now found a new coach for the season.

Thirteen-year-old Craig Hale has been in the Steve Nash group for five years now.

He said he has gotten a lot better at basketball since signing up.

“It’s just fun to go to, and you get better at basketball,” he said. “Being part of the hoops program – you know most of the basic skills of basketball: how to do layups, shoot properly, which makes you a lot better at it.”

Craig told the Pioneer he likes being involved with the group, even though he now can play on the basketball team at J.A. Laird too.

“It’s nice to be able to play basketball with your friends and have fun, and learn some good basketball skills too,” he said.

Kim Turgeon is one of the program coordinators. She said it has been a great asset to the community and she would like to see it continue.

“It’s really great to get the younger kids involved in basketball,” said Ms. Turgeon.

“It gives them an opportunity to try it at a really young age.”

Jane Fleet agrees wholeheartedly. She put all three of her children in the program and recommends it, citing what an asset it is to have in Invermere.

“The thing I really like about the concept of it is – it’s the dead of winter, it’s cold, and sometimes you might get a bit stir crazy, and this is a great sport that’s accessible to everybody,” Ms. Fleet said.

Team sports like basketball start within the school system in grade 6, so this program gives younger kids a chance to try out the sport and gain some skills years before school-based basketball begins.

Kim Daniele was a coach for the program over the last few years, but is currently on maternity leave this year.

“It’s basic skills, a good opportunity for kids to get their feet wet in the sport of basketball, and it’s great for kids to meet other kids from different schools,” said Ms. Daniele.

She coached the older group (grade 4-7), and said the change she saw in the kids through the two-month program was astounding.

“The progress is substantial . . . It really helped improve their skills,” she said.

Ms. Daniele’s focus was always to teach the kids some skills, but more than that, to teach the value of fair play and building a supportive atmosphere.

Parks Canada scientist long-term chair of Kootenay Conservation Program

By Nicole Trigg Kootenay Conservation Program When the Kootenay Conservation Program (KCP) first formed in 2002 as the East Kootenay Conservation Program, Parks Canada was one of the first agencies to join and Derek Petersen was one of several Parks staff on rotating participation.

But in 2005, Derek decided to jump in as the fulltime Parks Canada representative and has been actively involved ever since. He became KCP’s Executive Committee (now KCP Board) Vice Chair in 2007 and assumed the Chair role in 2013 to the present.

“Parks Canada was on-board as an ecosystem partner and participant right from the initial start-up discussions for KCP,” said Derek.

Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Derek has a Master’s degree in Science, an undergraduate degree in Environmental Studies and Economics and a diploma in Renewable Resources Technology. When he started his Parks Canada career in 1983, it was as a traditional park warden for parks across western and northern Canada.

He stepped into the science role of Ecosystem Specialist when he moved to Yoho in 1993 and has been involved in various science, planning and biological roles across Yoho, Banff and Kootenay National Parks ever since.

Five years ago, Derek became the Ecological Integrity Monitoring Coordinator for the Lake Louise-Yoho-Kootenay and Banff Field Units and began leading the ecosystem monitoring team for the three mountain national parks. He is based out of the Kootenay National Park Administration building in Radium Hot Springs.

“We started a number of years ago developing these Ecological Integrity (EI) monitoring programs across the national parks system. For my area of responsibility, we came up with a suite of 3 indicators — freshwater, forests and alpine — and for each one of the indicators we identified 5 environmental measures that we track, assess and report on in perpetuity. The results of the analysis of the monitoring data is used to generate annual reports on the health of these national park ecosystems, culminating every five and ten years in a major summary document, tied to the park management planning cycle, which is called the State of the Park Report.”

Derek appreciates his long-standing KCP involvement for the unique perspective it gives him.

“Certainly it’s been interesting being involved from the first days and watching it evolve and morph and, in 2012, bridge together conservation work in the East and West Kootenays and become the KCP,” he said. “We had good support for it right from the start, which demonstrated that a strong environmental community already existed, and that there was a willingness and desire to work together in the name of conservation.”

Nevertheless, the KCP Partnership has grown bigger than he ever envisioned, and far more effective in terms of people working together, creating synergy within the conservation community, and the coordination that’s taken place on the land securement and stewardship fronts.

“Both the KCP contract team, the Board members and the partners have been a great bunch of people to work with and I share the environmental ethic that we collectively, as well as the public see for the Kootenays, for the role and value of conservation within our backyards. It’s been an exciting venture for sure and truly does represent ‘our way of life insurance’ for the Kootenays.”
