The MeeTing and Passing of Two exTraordinary Lives

I
n 2009, Sudan was one of seven remaining northern white rhinos in the world. In an attempt to save a species decimated by poaching, a decision was made to transfer Sudan and three other northern white rhinos, Suni, Najin, and Fatu, from a zoo in the Czech Republic to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. Ol Pejeta was chosen because of their ongoing successful protection of the northern white rhino’s close relative, the southern white rhino, and other vulnerable African animals such as the black rhino, elephants, lions and cheetahs. Conservationists hoped the move to their native environment would encourage successful mating and preserve the species. Unfortunately, despite everyone’s best efforts, Suni died in 2014, leaving Sudan as the last remaining male member of his species. Too old to mate successfully, Sudan died in March 2018. The Ol Pejeta Conservancy believes that the best way to protect wildlife is to support the local population. This support fosters good will between the people and the conservancy and leads to a decrease in poaching. PA-MOJA works in collaboration with the Ol Pejeta Conservancy and the Langley School District Foundation to provide secondary school scholarships for Kenyan students living near the borders of the conservancy. Thanks to its community development programs and the success of its anti-poaching unit, Ol Pejeta has not had a poaching incident in over two years. Silvia Knittel first met Sudan ten years ago on a trip to Kenya in the early days of an education and wildlife conservation
project she and her colleagues were working on, now known as PA-MOJA. To Silvia and to many others within PA-MOJA and around the world, Sudan became an icon; an ambassador of extinction on our planet. Silvia was diagnosed with terminal cancer in January 2018 and passed away eight months later. One of her last acts before she died was to return to Kenya to say goodbye to the country, people, and wildlife that she had fallen in love with. It is in her name that PA-MOJA, as the global education branch of the Langley School District Foundation, has created the Silvia Knittel Memorial Fund, which will be used to continue to provide scholarships for Kenyan students. PA-MOJA and the Langley School District Foundation ask that you join us for a special fundraiser screening of KIFARU - Look Extinction In the Eyes, David Hambridge’s incredible documentary about Sudan and his caretakers, James Mwenda and Joseph Wachira. RemembeRing a LangLey SupeRStaR brenda ankenman: the anchor of the nicomekl lunch program by Lilianne Fuller
When Brenda Ankenman first heard that students at Nicomekl Elementary were coming to school without lunches, she was one of the first to offer her help. That was in 2014 and since then, Brenda made and delivered lunches for students every Friday for more than five years. “She was appalled by the number of children coming to school without a lunch and she wanted to at least make a small dent in that number,” said Brenda’s husband Lorne Ankenman. “Each lunch was prepared with love and usually included an encouraging note and while sweets weren’t encouraged, I think one of her signature cookies may have made it into each of the lunch bags”, said Lorne with a sly

smile. “She insisted on including milk as well, maintaining that growing kids need their calcium.” The Nicomekl School Lunch Program wasn’t the only program to benefit from Brenda’s volunteerism. She was also a Reading Buddy at the school. “I don’t know why she did it, but I know she was always on the lookout for how she could help others. She considered herself a grandmother to her Reading Buddies. She was hugged and loved by them all,” said Lorne. “The kids adored her and would always look forward to her visits. It was so much more than just reading...it was reading with love,” added Sandy Marshall, the teacher in charge of the program.
Unfortunately, Brenda wasn’t able to honour her commitment to making even more lunches. In June, 2019, she was diagnosed with cancer and on August 31st passed away, she continues to benefit Nicomekl Elementary School. Her obituary requested that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the Langley School District Foundation for the Nicomekl School Lunch Program. Thanks to all her friends and family, the Nicomekl lunch program received donations in excess of $2000 with more coming in. The Call of Nature – Bellowing throughout the District Outdoor Classrooms that foster real learning in real spaces. Bordered and defined, not by windowless walls, but by leafy trees blowing in the breeze. By Susan Cairns There are students who go through their educational careers without a hitch. The programs seem designed to cater to their brains, lifestyle and outside support. They are the lucky ones. But, what about the kids who stray from the norm for whatever reason? Are they not entitled to the benefits of their education? What if the classroom design works to drive them crazy? Perhaps their brains are wired a little differently. Maybe they are gifted or talented in unconventional ways. They could come from diverse or indigenous cultures where the standard curriculum simply doesn’t resonate. Does this mean that they should suffer throughout their lives, deemed unsuccessful and thereby locked out of mainstream society? It has become increasingly evident that in order for many children to learn they need a domain that is quite different and removed from the stereotypical classroom. Maybe it’s time to re-think the talking head scenario and to embrace surroundings that encourage creativity, collaboration and critical thinking. OUTDOOR CLASSROOMS ARE DOING JUST THAT. They are proving to yield an environment that enhances the learning capacity of all students – First Nations, refugees, left brainers, right brainers, geeks, nerds and jocks. Potential scientists, artists, writers, musicians, geologists, biologists, physicists, chemists, engineers, doctors, lawyers, teachers, carpenters, electricians, plumbers and archeologists. What if they could all emerge with an earned education according to interest, passion and merit? The Langley School District has more than 23,000 students of which many are struggling within the existing system and are not receiving the maximum benefit of the education to which they are entitled. The
reasons are many and varied. For some, the curriculum, regimen and content have little traction. For others, the regular classroom structure severely hampers their learning.

And, in a world and time when buildings encompassed by acres of concrete encroach on every square inch of living space; when trees and wild spaces have been brutally eliminated and when inspiration and discovery have been stifled thanks to grinding rules and regulations in a world run by a battalion of those consumed with the bottom line, it is more important than ever to re-introduce the freedom of self-discovery to our next generation.

Prototypes include the following: LANGLEy MEADOwS Situated in an area defined as inner city but surrounded by a region of gentrification, Langley Meadows struggles with its demographic identity. Well aware of the dichotomy, the principal and staff made it their mission to provide a space where all could come together in a spirit of congeniality. Designed to provide easy outside access for all classrooms, the Outdoor Learning Area has the capacity to instantly explode with a mob of energetic little people cascading into a breezy haven of exploration, or contrarily into a refuge of solace and rejuvenating self-discovery. wIx-BROwN This is an area of rural properties, vast and wideranging, but littered with trailers and sheds, the latter built to accommodate low-income families. Children arrive at school, sometimes bewildered and unsure
welcomed the concept of an outdoor classroom featuring raised garden boxes for each division. The designated area punctuated by rustic picnic tables and surrounded by leafy green trees provides a tranquil space for an entire class to work outside. But the school has ambitions beyond the norm. They would like to install an irrigation system deriving from an indigenous stream and, with the help of their grade seven students design and install an in-ground labyrinth. They are on fire with a plethora of ideas. NOEL BOOTH “We are lucky to have a true forest, surrounding a lake right on school property,” says the principal. Having already received approval from the School District to proceed, school volunteers have cleared a path and central space in the forest. The whole school community is behind the concept.

Carefully crafted with both ambition and pragmatism, the plans boast an outdoor arena where children can embed themselves into a natural environment of learning, discovery and contemplation.

The teacher in charge literally quivers with excitement and enthusiasm as she regales the benefits of outdoor classrooms. Her plans, while radically inventive are, in their execution, both sane and selfexplanatory. Douglas Park identified as an inner city school has a large population of refugees and students from low-income families. Their economic, emotional and educational needs are of the greatest in the district. But thanks to a phalanx of devoted teachers and staff, Douglas Park students thrive despite their circumstances. The outdoor classrooms while still in their planning stages offer hope, solutions, strategies and environs where learning becomes relevant to a whole group of children who would often otherwise fall through the cracks. Renowned for their ingenuity in weaving artistry into all aspects of study, this school has hopes of creating an outdoor learning environment that is accessible to all. Crafting a space of scrutiny, analysis, inquiry and sensory exploration, the outdoor classroom strives for an ambience of accessibility, camaraderie, interaction and, of course the ultimate in self-discovery.

Alex Hope teachers envision an outdoor learning area where children can climb, run and explore with rare abandon. They imagine a space with trees and shade – where unrestrained play engenders a next generation of healthy, balanced and resilient adults. They want students to take risks, learn to understand their limits, to stretch their abilities as they grow, improve their physical literacy and develop their creativity. Their vision involves natural wood structures, pathways and seating areas surrounded by trees, large enough for a class of two or more to use concurrently. There would be hilled mounds and places for children to roll and tumble – an area where kids could challenge their bodies and minds, while connecting to nature in a new form. It would be a place of exploration, of child centered play, of children taking risks and building their capacity within their physical selves. It could serve all children, no matter their strengths or stretches and provide a universal design for physical learning. The evidence abounds. Creating environments that foster a love of nature, an understanding of place and an awareness of physical selves does help build resiliency and grit amongst students. The Langley Umpires Association is recruiting softball umpires for the 2020 season! Umpires must be at least 11 years of age in 2020, enjoy the sport of fast-pitch softball, and have a willingness to learn. The games are 1 to 1.5 hours long Monday to Thursday. The artist Peter Ewart (1918-2001) may have grown up in eastern Canada, but the majestic mountains, juxtaposed against the tranquil farmlands of Langley certainly formed the hypnotic backbone of his art in later years. The cool stylishness of stark realism blended with his gentle impressionism is undeniable, as Ewart traversed his concise but enthralling repertoire. While Ewart, like many of his ilk, vigorously shirked the limelight, his talent managed to overpower his reticence. Hosted at the school that bears his name, Ewart’s iconoclastic pieces are nestled amongst the art of his successors.
