BRIGHT LIGHTS ON A NIPPY NIGHT

Fall into a sea of lights — perhaps not literally — by lining the shores at Cattle Point (7 pm), Willows Beach (7:15 pm) and Cadboro Bay Beach (7:45 pm) for the Royal Victoria Yacht Club’s annual parade of boatsdressed-up-for-the-season. The event is in support of the Salvation Army and Oak Bay Kiwanis and guests are encouraged to bring non-perishable food or other donations to the Kiwanis or Salvation Army. Hurry! This is TONIGHT (December 6).

The day after Tweed hits the Oak Bay streets on December 6, several cool holiday events get underway. Start the day at Oak Bay Rec Centre’s Breakfast with Santa Claus, 9 to 11 am, where there will be a buffet breakfast, holiday sing-along and a visit from Santa. Later in the day, singer extraordinaire Stephanie Greaves brings some of her friends along for a Christmas concert at Oak Bay High’s Dave Dunnet Community Theatre. On the way, be sure to check out the annual — but always fun — Island Equipment Owners Association Parade of Lighted Trucks. Feast your eyes on over 80 brightly lit cement trucks, dump trucks and other heavy equipment as they motor through Oak Bay Village between 6 and 7 pm.

Magic in the Air: Roger Colwill’s Christmas creation

T

Christopher Causton was Mayor of Oak Bay for 15 years.

He’s now a captain and goodwill ambassador for Victoria Harbour Ferries. Educated at a university in Scotland, he likes to fly flags in his spare time.

here’s a quiet spot in Oak Bay at the corner of Brighton and Hampshire. Sitting on a bench opposite a fallen Garry oak there is a story to be told.

The bench is dedicated and bears the inscription “doing good is contagious . . . try it . . . in loving memory of Roger Colwill, who often relied on the kindness of others.” Across from the bench is a fallen Garry oak that had weakened so much it needed to be taken down. The tree lived in the 600 block of Victoria Avenue and now decays quietly in its new resting place.

Roger Colwill was an entrepreneur and philanthropist who lived on Newport Avenue. Twenty-three years ago, in the winter of 1996, he came up with a magical idea that has had far-reaching community benefits in the municipality. His simple idea was to hold a neighbourhood Christmas celebration at the corner of Central and St. Patrick’s.

He approached neighbours in 30 different blocks from his home and invited them to ask their neighbours and their families in for a drink on the evening of December 19.

During “happy-hour mingling” the groups would (in some cases “should”!) practise their carol singing with song sheets that had been carefully supplied by the Oak Bay News. Then the idea was for all 30 groups to walk, with a banner declaring their street, to the corner of St. Patrick’s and Central. Every group stopped at houses where it was known neighbours could not get out, and more than one rendition of Good King Wenceslas was heard in the air of South Oak Bay.

Extensive Local Knowledge & Straight Forward Advice

At Casey’s corner the groups were met by a brass band. To add to the music, all the carollers had been asked to bring an instrument — so you can imagine the noise!. The carollers were joined by a torchlight parade of Monterey School students plus groups from all the other Oak Bay neighbourhoods. Then there was hot chocolate, spicy hot apple juice, cookies and a visit by a traveller from the North. Everyone had a great time, and I know of some people who have, since then, had the urge to sing Christmas carols.

Scroll forward five years to 2001 and the fearful world of 9/11, and Roger’s seed turned into Christmas on the Avenue and all the events that have become so much a part of the joy of living here.

When Roger’s health took a turn for the worse and he was confined to a wheelchair, he thought it his duty to inform the mayor of where the public works department should make curb cuts. When asked to put it in a document he travelled the whole municipality in his wheelchair, making notes of where improvements could be made. It is still the best evidence we have.

On this past Halloween, trick-or-treaters filled Oak Bay Avenue with shouts of happiness and big smiles. At this Christmastime we can all enjoy the Light-Up, the Gallery Walk and the Truck Parade. A lot of this happiness can be traced back to that December night of carol singing in 1996.

If you are in the area, drop by and sit on his bench this Christmas and thank him.

Couple’s love of Oak Bay Beach Hotel made them permanent residents

A

n iconic piece of waterfront real estate, the Oak Bay Beach Hotel, has adorned the shoreline since 1927 when it was built by Major William J. Merston on the designs of architect P. Leonard James.

Since then, it burnt down and was promptly re-built (1930) and it was sold in 1944 to Norma Macdonald, an avid antique collector and dealer who outfitted the Victorian hotel with many priceless antiques and renovated one suite of rooms into a small cocktail lounge, the Snug, in 1954.

The next phase of change was initiated when the hotel was purchased by Bruce Walker and Glenn Anderson, two businessmen from Winnipeg in 1972, and then purchased again by Bruce’s son Kevin and his wife Shawna (1995). It was during Kevin and Shawna’s ownership and subsequent re-development of the hotel that Hugh and Janice Finlayson first became interested in owning a piece of Oak Bay history.

But it certainly wasn’t their first experience in the hotel.

When Hugh was in his 20s, early in his management career, he was transferred to Victoria.

“After a while I was transferred back to the Vancouver area and decided to return to school. When I would come back to visit friends in Victoria, I would stay at the hotel,” he explains, sitting in the couple’s bright, two-bedroom condo on the fourth floor of the hotel.

“We started to come to the hotel when we first met, and eventually we were married here, in the old hotel,” Janice adds.

The Finlaysons, who split their time between Oak Bay and their home in False Creek, enjoy ownership of one of the 20 strata residences in the Oak Bay Beach Hotel. Like the guests who can book in to any of the hotel’s 100 rooms, the Finlaysons enjoy full use of its amenities, services and nearby community.

Where did you grow up and who is your family?

I grew up in Oak Bay and I spent a good chunk of my childhood building forts and collecting snakes in Uplands Park. I met my French husband, Franck, on a Rotary Exchange year to Burgundy after high school. We had a lightning-bolt romance and spent many years living in France, England and even Nepal, briefly, but are now happily settled back in Oak Bay with our three Franco-Canadian daughters.

We still have three vacation rentals in the vineyards of Burgundy and go over as often as we can.

What do you love about Oak Bay? I love the natural beauty. I walk our rescue dog, Pepper, for an hour every day around South Oak Bay. I never take it for granted to live so close to the ocean and have so many varied and beautiful places to walk. I love the fact that I almost always bump into a neighbour, friend or friendly fellow walker and have a chat. That sense of community is special. It’s also the little things about Oak Bay

that touch my heart. The water bowls people leave out for our local dogs, the adorable free libraries in front of so many houses, the Adirondack chairs on McMicking Point — all those little gestures that show we care about one another.

Why did you become a writer?

I always dreamed of writing and began, but never finished, a multitude of novels in my 20s and 30s. Just before I turned 40, I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease of the bile ducts and liver called PSC. It’s untreatable and generally terminal — the only “cure” is a liver transplant. The morning after my official diagnosis, I woke up knowing my entire world had changed overnight. The fear of failing at the one thing I dreamed of doing (writing) was outweighed by the fear of dying with my words still left inside me. I got up, went down to my laptop, and began writing the first book in my Grape Series. I haven’t stopped writing and publishing since. My sixth Grape Series book, My Grape Cellar, came out in October. Writing’s now my full-

time job and my health crisis is what made that happen.

What do you love about storytelling?

I’ve always been an avid reader, and the ability of books to allow me to live a multitude of different lives always feels like magic. Reading has always been one of my most precious escapes and it became a lifeline for me during those difficult years prior to my transplant.

Stories connect us, soothe us, help us, entertain us and teach us.

Who is your hero?

I have two. My mom, who is truly a force of nature and has always shown up for her friends and family, and is precious beyond measure, and my friend Nyssa Temmel, who donated the entire right lobe of her liver to me in a living-donor transplant in 2017 and saved my life. We met at the Oak Bay Fire Hall because she was the Sparks leader for my youngest daughter. It was a miracle made in Oak Bay! We have superheroes living among us.

Nyssa is one of them.

Fired up for winter wear For Oak Bay firefighter Jason Hodge, it’s all about function and comfort

L

aid-back is how Oak Bay firefighter Jason Hodge describes his day-to-day look.

“For me, it’s mostly about function and comfort,” explains the father of three.

“I’m happiest and feel the most confident in a pair of jeans or Carhartts and a T-shirt. I find I spend a lot of time changing clothes with the kids around because we’re always getting into something,” he laughs.

A Victoria native and Oak Bay High School grad, Jason works as a full-time firefighter with the Oak Bay Fire Department, and has served as the executive director for the Oak Bay Firefighters Charitable Foundation for the last four years.

“We’re a 100 per cent non-profit foundation, and everything we raise is put back into the community,” Jason explains. “I was on the job for about two years when I decided to get on board. I really believe in my heart that it’s part of the job as a firefighter to give back to the community, and the best part is I have 25 other members of the department as helpers.”

His day-to-day routine during his shifts consists of riding his bike in to the station, hitting his fitness routine, daily drills, daily maintenance checks of the vehicles and cleaning up around the station. Among their day-to-day activities, the firefighters also conduct building inspections around the municipality and, of course, respond to calls.

“I absolutely love my job and I feel very lucky that I got a job with Oak Bay,” he says. “I love the small-town feel and the tight-knit community. Everyone looks out for each other and it feels like a safe place to be.”

Outside of work, Jason and his family have an active outdoor lifestyle.

“We’re into sports, we love the outdoors and during the summer we like to get up for some boating and fishing at our cabin on Horne Lake. That’s why it’s important to me that my style encompasses function and comfort, because with our lifestyle, I don’t have a lot of time to fuss.”

Mac & Cheese is the perfect winter comfort food

Hearty, nourishing and so delicious, comfort foods like these bring feelings of familiarity and satisfaction to the darkest days of the year.

lustery winter days call for the most comforting of foods: warming bowls of soup, piles of buttery mashed potatoes or melty grilled-cheese sandwiches. Hearty, nourishing and so delicious, comfort foods like these bring feelings of familiarity and satisfaction to the darkest days of the year.

After coming in from a brisk walk in Uplands Park or along the seashore in Oak Bay, I love to warm up the family with a pot of my stovetop macaroni and cheese.

Quicker to make than our mothers’ mac and cheese, this has a decadent, silky sauce, thanks to the magic of three different cheeses and a couple of eggs.

The sauce ingredients are prepped while the pasta is cooking and then stirred into the drained and buttered noodles to make something more than the sum of its parts: a very flavourful and rich sauce that no one will know took you less than 10 minutes to make.

I almost always add something extra. My favourite add-in is Red Barn double-smoked bacon, or the wonderful maple-rosemary bacon from Whole Beast, cooked and crumbled into the creamy sauce just before serving.

Remove to a plate lined with paper towel. As soon as the bacon is cool enough to touch, place cooked slices on a cutting board and chop.

If using broccoli or cauliflower, chop into medium-sized florets, toss with a bit of oil and salt, place on a parchmentlined tray and bake in a 400 F oven for about 8 minutes (for broccoli) and 15 minutes (for cauliflower) until tender-crisp with some browning around the edges of the florets.

OAK BAY FEATURE Pasta: Place 3 litres of water and 2 tsp of salt in a large pot.

Bring to a boil over high heat. Stir in the macaroni. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes, until cooked to your preferred firmness.

Sauce: Meanwhile, mix the eggs, egg yolks, light cream, Tabasco sauce, salt, pepper, mustard powder and cornstarch in a medium bowl. Whisk to combine well. Set aside. Chop the cream cheese into cubes, and get the other two cheeses grated and ready to go.

A few minutes before the pasta is done cooking, heat up the roasted vegetables or cooked bacon, if using. I usually pop them back into the oven on the tray I roasted them on.

Once the pasta has finished cooking to your liking, drain and return to the pot along with the butter. Keep the pot on low heat. Stir to melt the butter. At this point add your heated vegetables (if using) or bacon (if using).

Pour the egg mixture over the buttered noodles and vegetables along with the cubed cream cheese and all of the grated cheese. Stir until thoroughly combined and cheese starts to melt. Stir constantly while cooking over low heat, until mixture is hot and creamy and slightly thickened, about 5 minutes. Be careful not to overcook. Serve immediately.

tepping off the plane into the hot tropical climate of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands deep in the middle of the Pacific Ocean seemed a little like magic.

We had boarded the plane in the midst of sleet, snow and freezing temperatures. Now, only a few hours later, we were miraculously savouring the warmth and gasping at the colour and greenery all around. Insects buzzed and birds chirped and cawed.

To escape the traditional Canadian Christmas, not to mention the weather, my wife Ally and I had come to this atoll surrounded by a glorious coral reef. We had landed in paradise, and thoughts of winter and Christmas quickly vanished.

It was like swimming in a top-end aquarium. We quickly discovered that island lifestyle was laid back, friendly and relaxed. We explored the circular road around the island on a scooter, finding paw paw and banana plantations, a local brewery, churches and a waterfall.

Christmas Day arrived and it began like most other CookIsland days: hot, humid and sunny. Instead of snorkelling, Ally and I donned our best tropical clothes, hopped onto our rented scooter and rode along a road lined by flamboyant brilliant orange trees to a simple, white-washed church to attend a Christmas service.

Joining throngs of Polynesians in colourful shirts and dresses — with many of the women wearing straw bonnets — we walked through a cemetery, where large, aboveground, concrete tombs lay like white bunkers.

Welcomed by broad smiles and handshakes at the entrance to Arorangi Cook Islands Christian Church, we were led to a bench in the packed hall. walls. The refrain consisted of about eight lines of Polynesian that were repeated over and over again with incredible vigour. They sang and sang and sang.

Finally, the singers’ energy flagged and another troupe, dressed primarily in turquoise and seated in another part of the church, jumped up and began to sing just as loudly and vigorously. They did their utmost to outdo the first group.

When they tired, another group took over, striving to be the loudest yet. Then a fourth group sang. Ally and I bopped along, totally captivated by these energetic performances.

Suddenly this astonishing Yuletide musical mayhem stopped. There was dead silence, and every head turned toward us as the pastor said, “Now it is time for the tourists to sing.”

I was shocked and embarrassed, since I cannot carry a tune. About 10 of us — the others were visitors from New Zealand — nervously gathered together. After a panicky discussion, we started to croak out Silent Night. Compared to the earlier singing, our effort was feeble and uninspired.

After a few bars, however, the entire congregation joined in, and soon the carol pulsated throughout the church. We were elated. Instead of being outsiders, we now felt a part of the service.

Then each of the groups that had sung so vigorously as part of the congregation took turns going to the front and performing like a choir. The other worshippers enthusiastically joined in on the choruses and the entire church was a mass of swaying, singing people. We tourists even stumbled along.

Later, we learned these groups actually are choirs from different parishes. Polynesians love music and almost everyone belongs to a choir, with much friendly rivalry between them.

Two and a half hours of this musical enthusiasm passed quickly, and the service ended with a prayer. We walked si-

lently past the white tombs back to our scooter, our hearts swelling with Christmas spirit.

Far in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, we had discovered a passionate, music-loving congregation that warmly embraced strangers into their midst. It was a Christmas we will cherish forever.

o make a wreath, first source a willow wreath form, foliage, embellishments and gold spray from a florist or craft store.

Using binding wire to cluster your foliage, continuously wire them tightly to your wreath form.

Create multiple clusters and add to the wreath until you have the look you’re aiming for.

Add items sprayed in gold and dried, such as pears, berries and dehydrated oranges. You can get creative and have some fun. No wreath is made exactly the same,

so put your own flair onto your creativity. Add a ribbon to finish it off.

Tip: Check your garden — you may have some fabulous foliage and berries that can be used.
