Team work makes her dream work Kim Snow’s desire is to ensure everyone in Langley is taken care of – one act of kindness at a time

Where did Langley’s angels come to fruition?

It’s a question many have asked in recent years, as an organization called Kimz Angels becomes increasingly higher profile in our community.

Well, truth be told it started out rather simply with one woman reaching out to help a Murrayville family in distress.

The one-income family was struggling due to illness, and Kim Snow – president of a school parent advisory council at the time – stepped up. She rallied the troops and collected much needed food and supplies for the family.

Even then, her personal mantra for helping others was apparent. Snow was anxious to make a difference, and quickly became the goto-person for food- and fundraising initiatives.

“Then [we] started getting calls about more families in need,” she recounted.

And before Snow knew it, Kimz Angels was created.

The demands for help became increasingly apparent as Langley’s homeless population grew, and Snow and her team stepped up.

But Kimz Angels isn’t just there for the homeless, she explained. Around the same time as her group began its outreach efforts, Riverview Hospital was closed and most Lower Mainland communities also saw an influx of people with mental illness struggling to get by. “[The need] has grown so much since,” Snow said, quickly clarifying that the demand for aid doesn’t end there, either.

Snow sees firsthand how the difficult economic times are impacting her community every day. There are more and more working poor and struggling elderly trying to get by – people who are turning to the Angels for help.

“They still need to eat,” she said, noting the issue of poverty in Langley “is so sad.”

Kimz Angels is a 100-per-cent volunteer organization with some 70-like-minded individuals wanting to help others.

But they could use more angels.

Sure, they need volunteers. But moreover they need donors, Snow explained.

“It’s all about opening your hearts and being kind,” she explained. “What we get, we give

back, 100 per cent.”

The Kimz Angel approach to care is two-fold.

First, they work with Langley Vineyard Church to hold a weekly clothing depot, where they distribute free clothing for all ages – particularly winter clothing this time of year, and household linens.

It’s for anyone in need, she said, noting nothing is sold during the Wednesday events.

The second facet of care is operating a mobile food unit that takes sandwiches and other ready to eat food out to people on the streets.

But, the third is a goal yet to be realized.

Snow hopes Santa can find them a drop-in centre where they can “keep our suffering souls warm. There are a lot of empty buildings around until we have more permanent housing,” she said.

In the meantime, donations of clean, gently used goods, including blankets, toques, coats, socks, scarves – “anything that’s warm” – are graciously accepted and can be dropped off at the Langley Advance Times office, 20258 Fraser Highway this holiday season.

Likewise, financial donations can be dropped off, too. Or a contribution can made through the purchase of songbooks.

Thanks to the kind sponsorship for this year’s Cookies & Carols initiative, by Joe Varga and his team at the Real Canadian Superstore in Langley, every cent raised through these songbooks will be going directly to Kimz Angels.

This initiative is like several the store is involved in throughout the holiday season and the rest of year, all projects aimed at helping people in Langley.

Be assured, Snow said, that “everything goes back into our community – 100 per cent.

“It’s my passion to make a difference in the world,” Snow said. “We can’t keep blaming. We need to take charge and make things happen.

We need to be the change in the world… one act of kindness at a time… open your hearts.

Viennese Kiss Cookies A N O T H E R G A N D Y F A M I LY F A V O R I T E

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

Preheat oven to 350 F Grease two 12 cup miniature muffin pans and set aside. In large mixing bowl, combine first three ingredients at medium speed until mixture resembles crumbs. Add sour cream and vanilla and mix at low speed until soft dough forms.

¾ cup butter or margarine, chill and cut into 1-inch pieces ¼ cup sugar 3 tablespoons sour cream 1 teaspoon vanilla 24 chocolate kisses

Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Place 1 ball in each prepared muffin cup and bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Immediately press kiss into centre of each cookie. Let cool for 1 minute before removing from pan. Cool before storing.
